Sona sends House stirring By Maricel V. Cruz and Joel E. Zurbano THE House of Representatives will implement stricter security measures in this year’s State of the Nation Address to prevent any possible violence by drug lords and terrorists. House Sergeant-at-Arms Ronald Detabali, at a news conference, said drug lords who have been affected by President Rodrigo Duterte’s war on drugs could use the occasion to retaliate and sow terror. “Definitely we will impose heightened security measures not only because of the current problem on ISIS, but because of the huge achievements of the President especially in the war on drugs and criminality,” Detabali said. Without giving details, Detabali said there would be more security personnel from the Presidential Security Group, Philippine National Police, Armed Forces of the Philippines and House security personnel compared to President Rodrigo Duterte’s first Sona Next page last year.

THE Turkish ambassador to Manila said Wednesday a terrorist group that instigated last year’s failed coup in Turkey has branched out to the Philippines.
In an interview with the ANC news channel, Ambassador Esra Cankour said the Fetullah Gulen Movement is active in a school in Zamboanga, opened in 1997, and two other schools in Manila. “This is their façade, thinking them as civic education institutions and innocent charity organizations. That will be a huge mischaracterization, that is wrong. They are
the façade. They talk about inter-faith dialogue, but they are concealing themselves,” she said on ANC’s Headstart. One of the leaders of the movement, Cihangir Arslan, denied the ambassador’s accusations. “We strongly assail the accusation made by the ambassador against us, our group. Next page

Poll tribunal okays reprieve for Leni By Rey E. Requejo THE Supreme Court, acting as the Presidential Electoral Tribunal, has extended the period for the camp of Vice President Leni Robredo to pay the remaining cash deposit of P7 million for her counter-protest against former senator Ferdinand Marcos Jr. Marcos is protesting his loss of the vice presidency to Robredo in the 2016 election, claiming he was cheated during the counting of the votes and wants a recount. Robredo in her counter-protest also wants a recounting of the votes in the areas where she lost to Marcos. Robredo’s lead lawyer Romulo Macalintal on Wednesday said there was no specific period yet for the extension of payment. “PET will determine [the pe-
riod of extension] based on the arguments we will raise in our motion,” Macalintal said. He said they will ask the electoral tribunal that the extension should be until the recount on the three pilot provinces in Marcos’ protest was terminated. “If the results show Marcos [was] able to make substantial recovery, then we will pay [but] if not, no need to pay because the protest will be dismissed,” Macalintal said. “And since the first issue to be resolved is [the] integrity of the 2016 automated election system, then I calculate the retrieval and recount may still be held sometime [in] January 2018.” Former senator Marcos is seeking the annulment of about a million votes cast in Lanao del Sur, Basilan Next page and Maguindanao.

PRESIDENT Rodrigo Duterte on Wednesday ordered the jail wardens to have the inmates involved in the illegal drug trade “shot” or “framed” as he expressed disgust over the reported resurgence of the illegal drug trade in the New Bilibid Prison. In a speech during the 26th anniversary of the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology in Camp Aguinaldo, Duterte vowed no mercy for the Bilibid inmates who were again reported conducting their illegal business through cellphones. “Shoot the son of a bitch. If you can’t … I will myself. Son of a bitch, kill them,” Duterte said. “Now, if they don’t want to fight back, then frame them.” Duterte also told the wardens not to fear placing criminals in solitary confinement as that was the only way to stop the illegal drug trade from reaching the penitentiaries. “The only thing we can do is to cut those people off from the rest of the world,” Duterte said.
