DUTERTE URGES VIGILANCE VS ISIS By John Paolo Bencito

P

RESIDENT Rodrigo Duterte on Saturday urged Mindanaoans not to let Islamic Stateinspired groups gain new ground even as local officials in the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao were told to prepare for more attacks in the coming days.

Resuming his public engagement after getting out of public sight for almost a week because he was “extremely tired”—Duterte admitted that the government may have ‘taken for granted’ the arms trade between and among Moro groups and private armies that allowed them to stockpile firearms as the ongoing siege in Marawi escalated. “These Maute and ISIS, what they knew only is killing people. Do not let them enter,” Duterte said in a speech at Cabadbaran City amid reports that extremists were slowly slipping out of war-torn Marawi City. Duterte told his fellow Mindanaons not to

believe in the extremists’ ideology of killing non-Muslims. “Huwag ninyong isipin ang idea na tayong lahat ay magpatayan... You rise to become the symbol of unity and cooperation in the region,” Duterte said. “I ask for your continued vigilance as we restore public order in the fight against terrorism,” he added. The President made the appeal as ARMM Gov. Mujiv Hataman met with Lanao del Sur mayors on Saturday telling them to prepare amid impeding attacks by the Maute group. Turn to A2

MARTIAL LAW: PUBLIC SAFETY A PRIME FACTOR By John Paolo Bencito and Maricel V. Cruz THE Palace on Saturday insisted on the need to continuously impose martial law in Mindanao despite its assurance that the resistance coming from extremist groups was already “dwindling.” During the regular “Mindanao

Hour” over state radio dzRB, Presidential Spokesperson Ernesto Abella said that the government likewise stressed the need to benchmark first public safety amid the proposal of House Speaker Pantaleon Alvarez to extend martial law until the end of the President’s term. “As far as the Palace is concerned, the Executive branch wishes for all

of this to end as soon as possible. However, our bottomline [consideration in implementing] martial law is public safety. Public safety as mandated by the Constitution,” Abella said. “Speaker Alvarez has voiced his opinion regarding the matter and we respect that. However, the provision of the Palace will be bench-

marked upon the agreement on whether or not public safety is already sufficiently guaranteed,” he added. On Thursday, Alvarez said that House leaders were open to extending the 60-day martial law period in Mindanao following the continued terrorist attacks of the Maute group. Turn to A2

YOKOSUKA—Seven US sailors were missing and a skipper injured after their Navy destroyer collided with a Philippine-flagged container ship off the coast of Japan early Saturday, with the badly damaged US vessel partially flooded. Aerial television footage showed one sailor lying on a stretcher and a rescuer being pulled up to a helicopter that was hovering above the USS Fitzgerald, its right side partially crushed. Three sailors were injured in the predawn collision, including the guided missile destroyer’s commanding officer Bryce Benson. “Two sailors, in addition to the commanding officer, have been medically evacuated from USS Fitzgerald to US Naval Hospital Yokosuka for lacerations and bruises,” the navy said. “There are seven sailors unaccounted for; the ship and the Japanese Coast Guard continues to search for them.” The accident between the Fitzgerald and Philippine-flagged ACX Crystal happened around 2:30 a.m. (1730 GMT Friday) off the coast off the Izu peninsula southwest of Tokyo, the US Navy and Japan’s coastguard said. The area is a busy shipping channel near major container ports in Yokohoma and Tokyo. “The volume of ships is heavy in this area and there have been accidents before,” coastguard official Yutaka Saito told Japan’s public broadcaster NHK. It was not immediately clear what caused the collision, but NHK said the massive 222-meter (730 foot) container ship made a sharp turn-around the time of the accident. Turn to A2

SINGER WRITES TWITTER HISTORY WITH 100M FANS WASHINGTON—Pop superstar Katy Perry has made history by becoming the first user to garner 100 million followers on Twitter, the social media platform announced. “Today we #WITNESS history,” Twitter said Friday in a tweet, referencing the title of Perry’s recently released fifth album. “Congratulations @katyperry, the first to reach 100 million followers! #LoveKaty.” The 32-year-old singer recently livestreamed her life for 96 hours, inviting fans to watch as she slept, cooked, did yoga, cuddled with her dog Nugget, and chatted with a stream of celebrities who showed up at her door. Despite putting her life temporarily under observation with 41 cameras, Perry—born Katheryn Hudson to conservative Christian parents in California—said she struggled to handle the attention to her life more broadly. “I built up this Katy Perry thing that everybody knows and that’s the reason why they’re tuning in and it’s fantastic, but it’s more of a facade,” she told the therapist Siri Singh. “I’m human and I’m living under this crazy microscope,” she said, tears smudging her mascara. Singer Justin Bieber trails on Twitter with just under 97 million followers, while Perry’s pop rival Taylor Swift has 85 million. AFP
