WARRIORS DUMP CAVALIERS, 129-120 OAKLAND—Capturing a second title in three seasons in historic fashion has put the Golden State Warriors among some of the NBA’s greatest championship squads, overcoming a heartbreaking setback to become even better. The Warriors, powered by 39 points from Kevin Durant and 34 from Stephen Curry, beat defending champions Cleveland 129-120 Monday to win the best-of-seven NBA Finals four games to one, avenging their loss to the Cavaliers in last year’s final. “We’re going down as one of the best teams ever and that’s a special thing you cannot take away from us,” Warriors reserve Andre Iguodala said. The Warriors followed up their 2015 title by winning a record 73 regular-season games in the 2015-16 campaign, but stumbled with a 3-1 finals lead and fell victim to the greatest comeback in finals history by Cleveland. That pushed Golden State to add Durant as a free agent last July and the results have been devastating. A 67-win season followed by a record 15-0 start to the playoffs, dropping game four in Cleveland to miss being the first unbeaten playoff champion. Which all set the stage for Monday’s home victory, the first of the club’s five titles won in front of loyal San Francisco Bay Next page area supporters.

Petitioners tell justices martial law ‘no basis’ PETITIONERS told the Supreme Court Tuesday that it should nullify President Rodrigo Duterte’s declaration of martial law, not only because it was unconstitutional but because it was based on falsehoods and “a litany of facts that turned out to be inaccurate.” During the oral arguments on the three petitions seeking to strike down Proclamation 216 placing the entire Mindanao under martial law, petitioners led by Albay Rep. Edcel Lagman told magistrates that there was no sufficient factual basis to justify martial law as some of the information cited in the proclamation was “false, inaccurate and contrived.” Lagman cited inaccurate pronouncements made by the government, including a supposed beheading of the Marawi City police chief, who was later interviewed by the press, as well as a report that a hospital and a school were taken over by terrorists, which also turned out to be false. President Duterte, who cut short his trip to Russia when the fighting broke out on May 23, should have validated the situation on the ground upon arriving home, and exercised due discretion, Lagman said. In a memorandum, Justice Secretary Vitaliano Aguirre II ordered NBI
Director Dante Gierran to coordinate with Interpol “to gather information on the location and whereabouts of Arturo Lascañas and to coordinate with the proper authorities for the apprehension of the latter.” Aguirre’s order came after the Davao City Regional Trial Court Branch 10 issued an arrest warrant against Lasca’s last week over the cases of murder and attempted murder, including the killing of broadcaster Juan “Jun” Pala in 2003.
