PRIDE MOVEMENT STANDS UP TO COVID BY STEVEN TAYLOR

Pride movement stands up to COVID with ambitious Global Pride event featuring music artists and world leaders. When Los Angeles Pride announced on March 12th that they were postponing their planned events for June, it confirmed what many Pride organizers across the world were fearing – that the COVID19 pandemic was going to wreak havoc on the Pride movement in 2020. By the end of March, barely two weeks after Los Angeles’ postponement, 190 more Prides had cancelled or postponed their in-person events including Toronto, Washington DC and Madrid. The

impact was being felt the world over, including in Australia, South Africa, the Philippines and across the whole of Europe and North America. The national and international Pride networks led by InterPride and the European Pride Organisers Association were already stepping up, helping our members craft their communications, think about contingency planning, and consider the long-term impact of COVID19 on their organization. But then we went an ambitious step further. We announced a huge, online Global Pride to take place on Saturday June 27th, the Stonewall anniversary weekend. Within weeks, news of Global Pride had reached 200 million people and social media was abuzz.

CROWN PRINCESS OF DENMARK, CARLOS ALVARADO QUESADA PRESIDENT OF COSTA RICA, PABLLO VITTAR, DEBORAH COX, KRISTINE W, DIXIE CHICKS, BRIGHT LIGHT AND MICHELLE MEOW

With a huge project ahead of us but no resources, InterPride and EPOA – with our Pride network partners including the US Association of Prides and Fierté Canada Pride – set about recruiting a vast team of volunteers including video editors, production support, fundraisers and public relations professionals. A committee was formed to oversee the project, comprising representatives of every region of the world. California-based producer Michelle Meow – herself a former President of San Francisco Pride – was appointed Executive Producer, charged with the incredible task of pulling the whole thing together.

But just a few weeks on, we announced on May 30th that the event will include speeches, film and performances from Prides and the activists and acts they work with from across the world, delivered in a 24-hour online stream with ‘prime-time’ for each region being early-afternoon. Last week we named the first speakers including Costa Rican president Carlos Alvarado Quesada, Prime Ministers Erna Solberg of Norway and Xavier Bettel of Luxembourg, and Prince Manvendra Singh Gohil of India. WorldPride and EuroGames – will also feature. Pabllo Vittar, Ava Max, Deborah Cox, Kristine W, Olivia Newton John, Dixie Chicks, Thelma Houston, Bright Light Bright Light, and Courtney Act are already scheduled to appear. More names from the world of entertainment including international musicians and bands, and performers from the LGBTQIA+ community, will be announced throughout June. My colleague Julian Sanjivan, Co-President of InterPride, said, “The support of these incredible world leaders and performers will mean so much to marginalized LGBTQIA+ people everywhere. By taking Pride online, not only are we making sure that LGBTQIA+ people everywhere can still experience the joy and community of Pride, but we also for the first time are enabling people to take part in Pride wherever they are. This means people who aren’t out, or who are living in socially conservative countries, can take part.” Activism will of course feature heavily in Global Pride. We’ll have content from groups like HRC and AllOut and we’ll be asking people to take action for LGBTQIA+ people facing oppression and discrimination across the world. We’ll remember those we’ve lost to HIV and AIDS and we’ll promote messages around sexual health and emotional well-being. We’re also hopeful that Global Pride will raise much needed funds for Pride groups around the world impacted by COVID19. Smaller Pride organizations live ‘hand to mouth’, only spending each year what they manage to raise from donations and sponsorship. We’re fearful that many Prides won’t survive the crisis and there could be many fewer Prides in 2021 than were planned in 2020, and Global Pride can play a part in creating resilience for the Pride movement.

8 THESTANDARDPS.COM

People viewing Global Pride will be able to donate directly using various fundraising platforms including Facebook Donate, and money is being raised from a handful of corporate partners who are helping to cover the costs of the event. Global Pride’s committee will announce the total raised and will then invite Prides to apply for financial support. The show will be streamed on the Global Pride website [globalpride2020.org], on YouTube and on other platforms to be announced, and will be free to view. Our Executive Producer Michelle Meow said last week: “Pride started as a grassroots coming-together to liberate our people. It’s remarkable that we’re doing exactly that during this pandemic. We are bringing a grassroots presentation of Pride to living rooms and digital devices everywhere. Performers on the global stage are invited to join in this historic event to share their message of affirmation, empowerment, and solidarity.” The changing shape of the lockdown imposed in many countries is now offering opportunities for some people to come together around Global Pride. People living in countries where lockdown has eased or lifted completely can meet with friends, perhaps in a bar or community center, and watch the show. People must follow the guidance of their government and authorities, but we hope that some people will be able to come together physically during Global Pride, as others watch at home and have a watch party with their friends online. For the rest of June, all of us on the Global Pride team will be working flat-out to pull the event together and deliver an awesome show on June 27th. It won’t be perfect and it won’t be highly polished, but it will be an authentic Pride show, curated and hosted by Pride organizers from all over the world. Our musicians will make you want

GLOBAL PRIDE 2020 BY RON DEHARTE to sing and dance and lip-sync along, our speakers will make you think and act and they might even make you cry. Above all, Global Pride will remind you that even in these most testing of times; the LGBTQIA+ community is resilient, powerful and undeterred. A few friends have asked me why we are bothering. Why not just take a year off from the manic organization of Pride, which consumes most of the spare time of tens of thousands of volunteers around the world? Kristine Garina, President of the European Pride Organisers Association and one of the co-chairs of the Global Pride project, sums it up neatly: “Every Pride organizer in the world can tell you a story of someone whose life changed when they visited Pride, and so with so many Prides being cancelled or postponed, as organizers we felt we had a responsibility to come together and deliver Pride online. We’re tremendously excited for the potential for Global Pride to bring people together in the biggest Pride there has ever been.”

Global Pride gives true meaning to the proverb that it takes a village to raise a child. In this case it relates to organizing a historic Pride event during a pandemic. More than 100 people around the world are sharing their talent and time to stage the digital version of Pride 2020. Proudly, volunteers from Southern California are having a significant impact on the event production. Content for the planned 24-hour broadcast is being managed by San Diego Pride’s director of entertainment and the stage manager for Palm Springs Pride and Cathedral City’s LGBT Days Gardenia Partridge. Jen LaBarbera also from San Diego Pride is serving as the directory of outreach to help engage participation from every region around the globe. Michelle Meow is the executive producer of the show and has produced the San Francisco Pride Parade broadcast for 15 years in addition to serving as a past president of the organization. Other volunteers from San Francisco include Jethro Patalinghug serving as creative director/production supervisor and Marsha Levine who has been tasked with helping to curate content from North America.

So, as the number of physical Prides impacted by COVID19 reaches 500, mark June 27th in your diary, organise a watch party with your friends, and get ready. Paint your face, wear your favourite Pride outfit, and dust off that post of glitter from last June. We hope you enjoy the show.

Others representing California on the all volunteer production team include independent filmmaker Valerie Castro, from West Oakland, and from San Diego Nick Kjeldgaard, Frankie Martinez, Gemma Capua and Javier Simmons.

Steve Taylor is a board member of European Pride Organisers Association and is leading the communications team for Global Pride.

I’m honored to be assisting in the role as executive producer for non-Pride organization content. With so many Pride organizations being impacted with cancelations and postponements it’s only fitting for us to join forces and create a digital Pride event that can deliver the excitement, energy, and feeling of community one experiences when attending their local Pride.

Follow @globalpride2020 and #globalpride2020 on social media.

It’s a massive project to accomplish in only a handful of weeks and we are excited about what the final product will look like.

Founded in 1978 and headquartered in New York City, SAGE is a national organization that offers supportive services and consumer resources to LGBT older people and their caregivers. SAGE also advocates for public policy changes that address the needs of LGBT elders, provides education and technical assistance for aging providers and LGBT community organizations through its National Resource Center on LGBT Aging, and cultural competency training through SAGECare. With staff located across the country, SAGE also coordinates SAGENet, a growing network of affiliates in the United States. Learn more at sageusa.org. This year, through a series of events, SAGE’s Pride in Place campaign will create opportunities for LGBT elders and allies across the country to both celebrate and honor the LGBT community’s history

virtually. Pride in Place will launch with a video storytelling campaign, uplifting LGBT elder voices and showcasing their resilience, strength and knowledge during this particularly difficult moment in history. With LGBT elders at the epicenter of the COVID-19 pandemic, SAGE is working to strengthen community bonds for our LGBT elders across the country. Pride in Place lends itself to a number of interpretations, whether it’s a physical location, a place in life, a place in the community, or a place in the history of the movement. Through storytelling, educational events, and community building opportunities, Pride in Place will highlight the significance of LGBT pioneers whose hard work and passion has led the LGBT movement to where it stands today. Pride in Place affirms that Pride is a state of mind and recognizes that our LGBT community will continue to flourish against all odds. For more information visit www.sageusa.org

PRIDE: A DEEPER LOVE BY MAX JIMENEZ

This year’s Pride will be different for all of us. For most, it will be a solo celebration happening in living rooms and bedrooms around the world. That doesn’t mean it has to be any less of an occasion or less meaningful. The show will go on! We spoke with some of the gay talent who will be performing the digital pride events to see how they will celebrate this different but still awesome Pride year.

WHAT ARE YOU MOST PROUD OF THIS YEAR? David Hernandez, American Idol I’m super proud of the community of artists that have come through to support each other during this difficult time. Most of us make our money off of touring so we have had to adjust our ways of expressing ourselves and doing business. Xcellence, Out Rapper I’m proud of the love, perseverance and humanity I’ve seen from the community during this pandemic. Lady Bunny, Comedian, “Cuntagious” The recording studios I normally record in are closed until who

knows when. So, I’m very proud of myself for buying a mic and learning Garageband’s software! It may not sound like much, but I’m the least tech-savvy queen there is. The only apps I know are appetizers! Project Moses, Out Singer, “Better Man” I’m proud of how my team and I accomplished and album that’s really beautiful and I can’t wait to share it with the world. Jay MaQ, Out singer, “No Love” Two things. One that I prepared for this year with plenty of music to release, and two, that I have been using the lockdown to create even more.

Michael Fairman, Out Singer, “Other Side” I am most proud that I remained strong and vigilante during the coronavirus pandemic. I took the anxiety and threw it into my work with some cool music projects I would have never expected. Big Dipper, Out Bear Rapper I’m most proud of the fact that I’m still putting out music and videos. I’ve had to adjust how I perform, how I get to engage with my audience, but I’m proud that I was able to roll with the limitations and keep going. HAS THE FIGHT FOR LGBTQ EQUALITY ADVANCED OR FALLEN BEHIND IN THE LAST YEAR? David Hernandez I think in many ways we have advanced but we need to be more proactive in the voting process and elect people that have our LGBTQ rights at heart. People are still being killed or taking their own lives because of who they are. Xcellence When I can turn on HBO and watch Shangela break down barriers and walls all over Trump’s America on We’re Here, I would say yes, advances have been made. Of course, the battle is far from over!

Lady Bunny I hear very few LGBTQ people making demands. They repeat catchphrases like #loveislove and think they’re being political. Around half of the states permit discrimination against LGBTQ folks in housing and/or employment. I hear more passionate pleas about Drag Race contestants from gay men than equality. Project Moses The gay rights movement has had a lot to celebrate, but many anti-gay hate crimes are on the rise, and most likely under counted. I experienced it myself recently on the subway. I asked a man if I could take a seat next to him. He got up, punched me, and ran out the door shouting, “faggot”. Jay MaQ TV, music, politics, and social media are saturated with diversity so that is true advancement! It’s harder to discriminate against someone whose narrative you understand. We have to keep living out loud. Michael Fairman I am worried how anti-gay bias has emerged through the COVID-19 pandemic. There are Supreme Court battles going on right now over frontline hospital workers in our community. The outbreak has been hard on LGBTQ African-Americans as well. Our country’s

minutes on the phone with me will make you feel sane by comparison.

Big Dipper Our current landscape is grim and leadership is bigoted, but that doesn’t mean I’m not optimistic for big strides to come in the near future. Progress will happen, the bigots will die out, and change will continue to happen.

Project Moses I was someone who struggled with my sexuality so my message to the community is to show compassion for those who are still trying to find themselves.

WHAT IS YOUR PRIDE MESSAGE TO THE LGBTQ COMMUNITY THIS YEAR? David Hernandez Stand tall, stay strong and be proud. Remember that we are always better in numbers and you can’t be protected if you hide in the dark. Be an advocate for change. Xcellence One word: “feel”. Everyone needs to feel again. Do what feels right, vote for who feels right, listen to the music that feels right. Don’t be fooled. Make them give you something you can feel! Lady Bunny Staying connected with members of our community is extra important now, if you’re going through it, text me your number. I have no counselor training whatsoever, but I guarantee that a few

Jay MaQ Never stop being who you are. That visibility is a part of our progress. Michael Fairman Let’s be good to each other and set an example as a unified front. Big Dipper: It’s important to stay home and be safe, but that doesn’t mean we need to be isolated emotionally. Reach out digitally to your communities, and be confident that we will come together again next year in person to really make some noise and have fun. WITH NOVEMBER’S PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION AROUND THE CORNER, WHAT IS YOUR ADVICE TO THE LGBTQ COMMUNITY? David Hernandez PLEASE F***ING VOTE!

CATCH LADY BUNNY’S INFECTIOUS HUMOR IN A NEW DOWNLOADABLE COMEDY SPECIAL DEBUTING JUNE 5TH BY MATTHEW BLANCO In her new comedy show, Cunt-agious, demented drag diva Lady Bunny shamelessly interrupts your isolation in an attempt to give what may be your last laugh before the apocalypse. Premiering Friday, June 5th at 8PM at VossEvents.com, Bunny’s raucous Laugh-In inspired joke routine will go from deranged to filthy, with Bunny showing off her signature dance moves (well, the ones the old gal didn’t forget decades ago). With an emphasis on COVID-19 humor, expect brand new song parodies from artists as varied as Lizzo, Justin Bieber and Madonna. Drag sensation Christeene will join Bun-Bun for a duet of her updated version of Peggy Lee’s “Is That All There Is” and Bunny’s gal pal RuPaul will get worked over in a parody of “Sissy That Walk” called “Sissy That Cough.” Three new skits will show off Bunny’s comedic chops in non-musical ways and showcase the hilarity of co-writer Beryl Mendelbaum. Can Lady Bunny’s COVID clowning be categorized as too soon or too early? Only one way to find out!

Xcellence Buckle up, buttercup! Lady Bunny Healthcare is a huge issue for our community due to expensive PREP and AIDS treatments, gender reassignment surgeries, and treatment for drug and alcohol abuse. Time to hold politicians’ feet to the fire. Project Moses Get out there and make your voice heard! Jay MaQ It is time we reclaim our beautiful country! Michael Fairman VOTE! We have to change the course of America and get a true ally in the white house who does not discount the LGBTQ community or any other minority groups. Big Dipper If you’ve never voted before, get registered. Find out who your representatives are, your local leadership positions, and vote for those who you believe will represent us fairly and equally. Your voice is important and your vote matters.

Lady Bunny is best known for creating Wigstock, the outrageous festival of love, peace and hair grease which became the subject of two documentaries: Samuel Goldwyn’s Wigstock The Movie in 1995 and HBO’s Wig in 2019. While she has enjoyed hosting both of Werq The World’s livestreams with Bianca Del Rio, Cunt-agious is Bunny’s first full-length online offering during self-isolation. “I’ve downed some special loads, but I’ve never downloaded a special!” she quips. “When your income involves audiences and dance floors packed together tightly, then your income has stopped for the foreseeable future. And my wigs are too mammoth to permit me to fit onto a Facebook live video format.” She’s trying something new with Cunt-agious; she even wrote a theme song for it! And as viewers will soon see in this new “viral” video, Bunny’s hefty talents have grown even larger—thanks to the fact that she’s an excellent cook. Get ready to laugh your masks off! And for all those dying for a glimpse of Bunny out of drag, this is your moment. Masks and mascara make a great combination, along with four giant wigs and twelve costume changes packed into 35 minutes. This floozy offers unhinged Tips to Survive A Pandemic, and a visit to a fake newsroom for headlines we’d all like to see. Laughter, not Clorox, is the best medicine, so tune in on Friday, June 5th at 8PM for an overdose of it. Tickets are $9.99 and available at VossEvents.com.

THE TREVOR PROJECT LAUNCHES PRIDE EVERYWHERE CAMPAIGN

One of the nation’s leading LGBTQ advocacy groups has tapped Demi Lovato as its Pride spokesperson. The Trevor Project has joined forces with the out recording artist, Demi Lovato for its 2020 “Pride Everywhere” campaign, featuring a new video narrated by Lovato about channeling the spirit of Pride from home amid the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. (And no, she didn’t use the platform to shoot her shot with Rihanna, although we kind of wish she had.) Just because cities across the country have canceled their Pride parades and festivals amid the COVID-19 pandemic; it doesn’t mean Pride is canceled! We will always celebrate, there will always be a party, there’s still a community, and there’s still a fight for critical civil rights in this country and around the world. The only thing that changes this year is how we’ll celebrate. We need Pride and the ability to connect with fellow LGBTQ+ people now more than ever, especially while social distancing. So if you’re looking for ways to show your pride this year, here’s how to celebrate all month long at home and online, from giving back to LGBTQ+ causes to

making Insta-worthy rainbow recipes to attending free streaming events. Show your true colors, spread the love, and remember that you’re not alone. In a media statement, Amit Paley, CEO and executive director of The Trevor Project, drove home that point: “Pride isn’t just about parades, it’s about celebrating what makes our LGBTQ community thrive. It’s about finding our strength even in times of challenge, sharing our joy even in moments of pain, and creating space to express and celebrate who we are. That’s been true since the first Pride march 50 years ago, and it’s just as true this season. People around the world are staying at home, but we at The Trevor Project believe that no matter where you are, you can still find Pride”. As part of the campaign, The Trevor Project is asking young people and supporters to join the movement by visiting its website and posting photos of their at-home Pride festivities on social media with the hashtag #PrideEverywhere.

#PRIDEPLEDGE ASKS CORPORATIONS TO PIVOT FUNDS LGBTQ Pride hits streets across the world in the form of parades, festivals and other celebratory events. Those are paid for largely through corporate sponsorships and donations. And this week, influencer and LGBTQ advocate Ashlee Marie Preston is asking: What’s happening to all that money now that Pride has effectively been canceled for the first time in decades due to the pandemic? Preston has launched the #PridePledge, an effort asking corporations to reallocate their annual LGBTQ Pride budgets back to the community to help sustain LGBTQ groups and individuals impacted by the Covid-19 pandemic. Preston, who has served on the board of LA Pride in addition to campaigning as a surrogate for Elizabeth Warren’s presidential bid, said that corporations typically fund Pride festivals to the tune of anywhere between $10,000 and $1 million. In 2019, for example, Verizon announced a two-year title sponsorship with LA Pride, donating $1 million to Christopher Street West, the nonprofit that organizes and produces each year’s festivities. “Imagine the top 50 corporations, the combined money they’re spending nationally on Pride,” said Preston. “What we’re asking for is minuscule compared to their spending capacity as allies.” In an effort to feature voices from the community, Preston decided to launch the #PridePledge as a petition on Change.org first. “Pride isn’t just about the party, it’s about the people,” reads the petition launched Saturday, which received over a thousand signatures in its first 24 hours. The petition describes how the community is affected by the pandemic’s unemployment crisis as well as health risks, and asks brands to reallocate earmarked Pride festival funds to organizations serving the LGBTQ community. “Those vulnerable sub-communities under the LGBTQ umbrella disproportionately impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic, are the same ones who fought on the frontlines for the very freedom we celebrate annually—at the festivals you’ve graciously sponsored,” reads the petition.

While there are no hard sign-ons just yet, Preston said she’s already in talks with a couple of companies. In late April, Preston launched the national relief fund and social impact campaign You Are Essential. The very next day, the campaign’s first donation came in from power couple Dwyane Wade and Gabrielle Union. Partnerships with celebrity influencers like Rosario Dawson and Diane Guerrero (Orange Is the New Black) quickly followed. Preston said that companies taking the #PridePledge can donate through You Are Essential, which already issues grants to LGBTQ organizations, through the Town Hall Project’s Mutual Aid Hub, or can donate directly to Pride organizations they have existing relationships with. “I chose the petition route because I wanted to make space for voices that are typically muffled by rainbow capitalism,” said Preston. “My hope was that sponsors would come into contact with real stories from real people around the disproportionate impact they experienced not just during the pandemic, but all the time.” Preston’s reference to “rainbow capitalism” illustrates a growing divide in the LGBTQ community over whether people benefit from corporate allyship in the form of Pride month campaigns that often take the form of rainbow-branded products with little financial return to those who need it most. “These are the individuals whose narratives are swept under the bleachers by ‘Pride Inc.’ and swapped out for a prepackaged, sanitized version of LGBTQ identity fit for corporate consumption,” Preston said. “I want them to meet the members of our community who exist outside of the marketing deck; the ones who fight on the frontline for the freedom we celebrate every year.” Thanks to ADWEEK for contributing to this article

IS THERE A DOCTOR… BY LEE LYNCH

It’s that time again. I need to find a healthcare provider. I live in a rural community where there is a large turnover of medical professionals and a constant shortage of qualified staff. The health organization that provides these services seems to have difficulty attracting talent. It’s common knowledge in the communities it covers that it’s a tough employer to work with. Which isn’t to say there are not entirely competent professionals devoted to their patients and performing at least as well as their big city peers. I’m the one who’s chosen to live where the question, “Is there a doctor in the house?” may well go unanswered. My primary provider is pursuing the next step in her career—a step at a deservedly higher altitude. She’s a Physician Assistant, but I couldn’t trust someone with a full medical degree more. She’s perfectly straight, yet never blanched when the issue of my queerness came up. Although she was not taking new patients at the time, she graciously made room for my sweetheart in her practice. How will we ever replace her? Of course, I asked the same thing when my former doctor left.

20 THESTANDARDPS.COM

We all loved her. Once, I had to go into her office and the New York Times was up on her computer screen. Bonding moment! Another time, I answered my phone and it was a call from a liberal election phone tree. I recognized my doctor’s voice and she admitted to thinking she probably didn’t need to give me her spiel. Double bonding! Then she was gone. This year, for the first time, I chose a Medicare Advantage Plan with the aforementioned difficult local health organization. The lure was partial coverage for dental, acupuncture, and vision, bless their hearts. Now I’m limited to the medical providers who are left on their roster after mine departed. Woe is me. One of my major concerns is finding a gay-friendly person, preferably female. I’ve always taken my chances, but after the phone tree doctor left, I tried Dr. X. Oh my gosh!, what a mistake that was both for me and, I later found out, for all her patients and the staff. It’s not difficult to intimidate me and Dr. X was a master at it. She was medical S&M and there I was, a homosexual beneath contempt—and this in the twenty-first century! I mean, you believe

what your doctor says, you trust her, you follow her instructions. But Dr. X was just plain mean. She was expert at identifying vulnerabilities and using verbal ice picks to stab them. So, I’m cautious now. I’m on tip toes. I’ll travel hours to see someone with whom I’ll be compatible. My retreating PA had some suggestions, but not one of them is taking new patients in this time of COVID19 and rural staff shortages. I’m grateful she was able to rule out a few pairings she knew would be lethal, to either me or to the doc. Friends recommended a good woman MD, but she’s employed by the Health District and thus, not covered by my plan. Two other recommendations looked excellent, but are not taking new patients. Facebook can be helpful once in a while. I posted to a local lgbtq and straight page whose members were generous with suggestions. There was a well-recommended P.A., but the contacts, responding to my search for a female provider, expressed uncertainty that the recommended individual was identifying as female. Meanwhile, our delightful new lesbian neighbors have also been looking for healthcare, and one actually scheduled an appointment with a woman MD in town, then cancelled when the plague hit, so no input there yet.

Do non-gays have this much trouble finding care? And how do other lesbians approach this headache? Should I simply call the clinics and ask if they employ a professional who is gay friendly, wait for the pregnant pause and assurance that everyone is treated equally, and the inevitable willy-nilly listing of doctors who can squeeze us in? There’s a neat website, out2enroll.org , which has a search engine for gay-friendly doctors. I plugged in my zip code. The response: “No providers match your search. Try removing some search criteria.” Maybe it works in San Francisco, a ten-hour drive from here in good weather. And then there’s https://www.outcarehealth.org/outlist/. Same response. HRC has a list, but it only includes hospitals for my state— Our medical center is not listed. I actually noticed, when I signed up for the Advantage Plan, that sexual orientation is not included in its Equal Employment statement. What’s a dyke to do? What I’ve always done. Make an appointment with an unknown quantity and hope for an openminded practitioner who thinks gay patients are as valuable and deserving of respect as heterosexuals. She’s out there, it’s just a matter of enduring a Dr. X or two until I find her.

INDESIGN

PRIDE, PANDEMICS & POSERS BY DANN FOLEY

It is easy to follow the crowd, easy to choose a style theme, easy to let others dictate to us what style is or what it should be. Some might call those people who follow, posers. That generalization is generally, not fair. If that were true, the vast majority of us would be posers and probably not even be aware that we were. As we start to venture out into our communities again, as we introduce ourselves to new norms of socially responsible distancing we have emerged with a new sense of who we are, what is important and what we want from our lives. The time may have slipped away (or crawled by) but the questions have remained the same. In fact, the questions may have become more demanding during our self-imposed incarcerations. Spending so much time at home has hopefully inspired

22 THESTANDARDPS.COM

you and not exacerbated an already annoying situation. The good news is, you have all the time in the world to make decisions about how you want to live. The exercise of decorating your home is not about speed or perfection. It is about finding what makes you happy and what brings you joy. So, after your work day at home is finished, after you have home schooled the kids, after you have cooked dinner and cleaned up and done laundry, etc., etc., etc. besides being exhausted, what do you feel? Does your home nourish your senses and your soul? Or does it leave you feeling less than? As we continue sheltering in place and simply staying closer to home, now is the time to make the changes that are begging to be made‌ and it doesn’t have to be overwhelming!

Take a good look around, it’s time for a Post Pandemic Prognosis. It is time to make real choices about how you live. No more saying, “I don’t care about it” or “it doesn’t matter”. It does matter, it all matters because you matter. I don’t care for the old adage of, living well is the best revenge because living well isn’t about revenge, it’s about putting you and your family first. Overhauling your life and your home may seem like a daunting task but, it’s not. It is about making one decision at a time, choose one thing at a time to change. Make choices to enhance how you live each day. Sure, we all want redecorate from scratch but, if that is not realistic it doesn’t mean you should give up. In past issues I have offered you some of my favorite tips and tricks and I thought this would be the perfect time to bring together the best of the best. So, try a few of these easy, simple and inexpensive (some don’t cost anything at all) ideas to start living your best life today! • Make your bed. Every day. I say it time and time again, this simple act can really change your life and the way you see your home. If you don’t know how to properly make a bed, there are plenty of Youtube videos to watch and I know you have plenty of time right now. Oh, and it’s free! • Go around the house with a damp rag that has been wrung almost dry and wipe the light bulbs in your lamps. You will be shocked to see how much dust they attract and wiping them clean will change the light they emit. Another free opportunity! • Clean your front door and door step. Pick up that mat and give it a good sweeping and if need be, buy a new door mat. Nothing is more welcoming. While you are at, wipe those lanterns and bulbs and add from freshly potted flowers or plants. • When it comes to outdoor living, cleanliness is everything. It is so easy to forget to keep your outdoor furniture and especially those cushions clean. The desert is a dusty place. Cover that furniture and/or dust, vacuum and wipe the frames and the cushions. The clean bright seating area outdoors will call to you to be enjoyed once again. Did I mention this one is also free? • Color makes the biggest impact. I like to say that color may actually be the last place to truly express your personality in a world of homogenized retail. Don’t be afraid, it’s just paint! If you want to make a big change with a minimum of time and effort. Pick one (or two) walls and choose a bold contrasting color of your choice. Not sure what that color might be? Take a quick look through your closet and see what color or colors you gravitate toward, if it looks good on you, it will look good around you.

than you did yesterday. Even for a design professional like me I still found things in my house that are in need of change… and I don’t mean the cleaning of the closets. I started moving furniture and art in the third week of shelter-at-home. I started considering paint colors and wallpaper samples by week four. I know I am not the only person who found that working from home only made me busier than ever. So many of the things that I wanted to do while at home still have not happened. But, I can honestly say that my home and I are better off today than when we started spending endless days together. I am not just a better baker for my time at home, I am actually living better! Live Well, Dann

So, you see making changes at home to live a better and more personalized life doesn’t have to overwhelm or even cost you a fortune. It can be done in small ways on a daily basis to live better

SUPERBIA SERVICES, THE FIRST LGBTQ CREDIT UNION BY RICHARD JONES, CO-FOUNDER GRAY JONES MEDIA

Launching the first ever LGBTQ+ credit union is no mean feat and has been years in the making. I had a chance to chat with Myles Meyers, the CEO and Founder of Superbia Services recently to find out why we need our own Credit Union, and what it will offer all of us. Richard Jones: Myles it’s great to sit down with you, your year ahead looks pretty special. Myles Meyers: Thanks Richard. Yes, for Superbia and the LGBTQ community it will be an especially significant year. And it all begins with the historic opening of Superbia Credit Union, the first ever credit union to focus on serving the banking needs of the national LGBTQ community. Superbia Credit Union will offer an experience completely free of intolerance and discrimination. More important, this will be the first time in our history, when the national LGBTQ community can come together to unify our economic power and deliver social good to directly impact the advance of our efforts to live more freely and equal. This is the work of the organization behind the creation of the credit union, Superbia Services Inc., to affect large-scale change for the community through fair and equitable access to banking, insurance and healthcare.

26 THESTANDARDPS.COM

RJ: So you gained approval of the Credit Union Charter last year, the first to be issued to serve the national LGBTQ community, why do you think no one has created a credit union for us in all that time? MM: The short answer is it hard – it’s really hard. It took three years of development and charter application processing to accomplish the charter approval. And like every business, there are factors that must align to give it the greatest chance to succeed. Plus, credit unions are special. They are based in a cooperative principle to retain all the profit within the credit union and to solely benefit its members/account holders and their commonly bonded community interests. Frankly, keeping the profit is not of interest to investors so this makes it very difficult to fund the development and launch a credit union. We’re overcoming this hurdle. How do we do it? Innovation, approaching the problem in a way that allowed us to raise funds in a multitude of ways and sheer determination to eradicate financial services discrimination and intolerance of the LGBTQ community and advance our economic equality. The benefits that will pour out of the credit union and into the LGBTQ community are tremendous. These important goals have kept us and continue to keep us focused and motivated.

MYLES MEYERS

RJ: What drove you to create an LGBTQ+ Credit Union anyway, aren’t there many banks that offer great services to the LGBTQ+ community? MM: Richard, I’d like for you to name me a great LGBTQ service that is made available to the national community from a bank. I’ll let you think about that and come back to it. Firstly, what makes a credit union successful is quite different from a bank. Banks provide services to deliver profits to shareholders, so they make decisions in the best interests of their shareholder. This can lead to a conflict with the best interests of their customer. Credit Unions are 100% owned by their customers, the member account holders, so the financial interests of the credit union and its customers are always aligned. In our case, it’s really quite remarkable how elegantly the model of Superbia Credit Union unifies, encourages and motivates LGBTQ individuals that have, to this point, been without their own provider, and marginalized in banking services.

the marketing that you see.

Ok, now that we’ve made that distinction, can you tell me a great LGBTQ banking service that is made to the national community No? Here’s this issue. It’s highly unlikely that you or anyone can name one. It could exist, but where and to how many of us? The issue remains the lack of LGBTQ inclusion. So, the LGBTQ community largely does not feel welcomed by banking providers. Think about

It’s incredible that in 2020, we are still faced with having to second-guess our belonging as a customer and being understood by a banking provider.

It’s typically not relatable, and the members of the community that are featured are not reflective of the community around us. They are the depiction of an LGBTQ customer the bank hopes to acquire. So, you feel estranged and likely uneasy about explaining your life, your needs and what you plan for in your future to a ‘scripted’ banking advisor. This estrangement impacts the community at large. Survey results show that only 50% of those identifying as LGBTQ hold a basic bank savings or checking account. 50%…this is far below the general population rate. This has real impacts on an ability to achieve individual economic equality. If you are unlikely to open a checking account how likely are you to save, or able to qualify for a loan for your marriage, or financing for a surgery?

Superbia is working with incredible partners like MasterCard to solve these issues of inclusion, and to do it on a large scale.

Q&A

With MasterCard, we begin with the True Name card, specifically designed to help the non-binary and transgender community. The most important role of Superbia is our ability to eradicate the risk of discrimination and intolerance from the entire system. You can’t always see it, as it is often hidden, or subtle, not always blatantly apparent. But it is destructive. For instance, and this will shock your readers, according to the Iowa State University Ivy College of Business’ study of a 25-year look back of mortgage applications made with providers across the country, if you are a same-sex couple on the mortgage application, your chance of denial went up 73%! That’s stark. That’s what we mean by hidden, somewhere in the system, 25 years of marginalized homeownership. It’s almost unfathomable the damage caused to the community of an entire LGBTQ generation that unknowingly suffered from this

discrimination. What’s worse – it’s still hidden in there, and it’s not alone. 31% of students identifying as LGBTQ report they believe their student loan was denied because of whom they are. These are the realities of the banking industry in which we are currently forced to bank because we had no choice, until now. Superbia is changing all of this. RJ: What are some of the top financial issues faced by 40+ LGBTQ people? MM: In a lot of ways, the most prevalent financial banking issues faced by 40+ LGBTQ people overlap. It is currently legal in most states (35) to use gender identity and sexual orientation when considering a decision at a financial institution. It’s incredible that we can be legally penalized because our families, lives, and financial journeys do not look like ‘everyone else’. The financial services and relationships we need should reflect our realities, community, and respect our values and identities.

JUNE 2020 29

Q&A But discrimination and lack of resources in health care is a big issue impacting the financial lives of LGBTQ over 40. Identifying and understanding how you can source the best healthcare coverage, at a fair cost, and provided by an affirming healthcare provider, are large issues that we will tackle in the upcoming healthcare development work of Superbia Services Inc. RJ: What are your goals at Superbia? MM: Our mission is to eradicate intolerance and discrimination that occurs across financial services and in doing so remove their impacts and shorten the timeline to achieve LGBTQ economic equality. So, our long-term goals include expanding the Superbia online consumer platform offerings from banking, into health care, life insurance and even assisting with money management through simplified products in wealth management. Our vision is for Superbia to provide an LGBTQ lifestyle care package of information, services and products that is directed and tailored to exactly the issues that we deal with in our lives and in the hopes we have in living our own American dream. RJ: How has the journey been from first concept to imminent launch? MM: You’ve caught me mid journey and so far, it has been an awakening both professionally and personally. It has been incredibly humbling to see how difficult it is for many people to just have a basis of living in this modern society that we desire. Our stakeholders’ willingness to get involved and to put forth a radically new approach to solving a decades old problem has been very encouraging. I am especially grateful to Alan Cumming. Alan as you know, is an award-winning performer known for his work in human rights and has provided us incredible insight. Alan, who has supported Superbia since the beginning, became Honorary Board Chair and National Mission Spokesperson in May 2019. We are also very thankful to all our amazing partners who have really gotten involved including MasterCard, PSCU, Kasasa, and CenterLink. And of course, our gratitude to the state of Michigan which treated our application for an LGBTQ credit union fairly and equitably – no more and no less. RJ: Any advice for LGBTQ+ folks having issues with their banking services? MM: I would tell them to be diligent. Be diligent in your follow

up and research, because if you have a gut feeling that you’re not getting the best deal because you are part of the community, the statistics indicate that you are likely right. Examine the features and rates you have been offered or ask why specifically you would’ve been turned down. Speak to your close ally friends and family that may be able to point to the specific area that you may be experiencing something other than what should be. And of course, if it’s blatant, reach out to your local officials, or contact your local LGBTQ center as they can point you to the best LGBTQ resources in your area to help you. This type of diligence is ridiculous, and something you will never have to do with Superbia Credit Union. You will never have to second guess whether you’re being treated fairly and equally if you bank with Superbia. RJ: When will we be able to open an account? MM: The arrival of the novel COVID-19 and its far-reaching impacts means we will open later this year, so you will be able to open an account very soon. Of course in the meantime you can go to www.superbiaservices. com, and join thousands that have signed up to be notified when we open the Superbia Credit Union virtual doors. We are so excited to begin serving the community and looking forward for what’s to come in our future! BOOK REVIEW

ALWAYS OVERBOOKED BY TERRI SCHLICHENMEYER You woke up this morning feeling pretty good. That was quite a relief: in these frightening, uncertain times, every day of wellness is a bonus – especially when you consider that healthcare for a gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, or queer patient can be different than what straight people require. Too bad healthcare providers don’t always know that. But read “Bodies and Barriers,” edited by Adrian Shanker, and you’ll feel more empowered to tell them. If you were to look for books or articles that address health care issues for LGBTQ patients, you will likely find an abundance of it. The problem is, says Shanker; people who are not lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, or queer wrote most of it. “Every person providing care for humans is providing care for LGBT humans,” he says, but it’s time that “Our stories about our bodies” be told. And so here, they are... For the youngest LGBTQ patients, physical and mental healthcare may be different than for their heterosexual peers, and it’s different than that which LGBTQ adults may need. Socially, for example, kids struggle with issues that adults are better-equipped to handle. Parents, as one story indicates, can be the best allies of all. Young adults likewise have issues that seem tied to their age and vulnerability. Homelessness can exacerbate health issues (and vice versa); teens may suffer from depression, suicidal notions, and bullying. Healthcare needs may extend to the dangers of “sex in the digital age” and a lack of maturity. Because of their youth, LGBTQ teens also need help with learning “social service navigation.” Habits such as alcohol and other addictions may be of issue to LGBTQ adults seeking good healthcare, but doctors sometimes don’t know what tests to ask for. They may be uninformed about caring for someone with bisexual or same-sex preferences, or who’s transitioned. They may have a “stigma” about HIV or be unaware of cancers that particularly plague LGBTQ individuals. As a gay, lesbian, bisexual, or transgender adult, being your own, highly vocal advocate is key. One thing is for certain: “Bodies and Barriers” is timely – not because Covid-19 treatment is based on sexuality but because other maladies that may arise are, and since healthcare is on your mind anyhow, this book is invaluable. Through a series of variously-authored essays, broken into sections based on age, editor Adrian Shanker offers a chorus of voices that display a variety of viewpoints and frustrations that could perhaps ultimately teach healthcare workers a thing or two. Readers shouldn’t be surprised to note resignation in these stories, or the occasional bit of

anger and outrage, but there are also plenty of essays that impart a calm but determined tone. It’s in these that an LGBTQ reader will find comfort, camaraderie, and a way to speak up. Be forearmed with information, and beware. Know how to demand from your doctor that which you need, and don’t leave without it. Wash your hands; don’t touch your face, and read “Bodies and Barriers.” Having this book feels pretty good. “Bodies and Barriers: Queer Activists on Health,” edited by Adrian Shanker, foreword by Rachel L. WELLNESS

WHAT WE’VE LEARNED FROM WORKING AT HOME BY ANGELA FOUNDLING

The recent transition to widespread working from home has shown that the experience has been both educational and eye opening for many. Working at home means learning to cope with distractions, space constraints, and managing time with family and learning new skills. And, according to new consumer research, it has also meant reassessing what is most important. A nationwide survey conducted by Wakefield Research on behalf of LG Electronics reveals the many ways working from home has challenged and surprised Americans. * CONNECTING WITH LOVED ONES The most striking survey results show the importance of close relationships. Social distancing has caused many to reassess who is most important to them, and how much they may have taken friends and family for granted.

* 37% are starting work earlier, while 17% are starting work later to manage schedules better.

The global health crisis has turned socializing into a more deliberate act. More than half (53%) of homebound people said they felt closer to loved ones than before the outbreak, and 27% even said that they felt much more connected than before.

* 23% use visual cues (like signs) to let others know when they’re working.

When asked what they want to do first when the crisis is over, the top answer was to visit loved ones, followed by going out to a meal.

Most people affected by the crisis say they have had to master (or learn from scratch) how to complete their work entirely from home, including the new norm of conducting video conferences from somewhere in their home.

MANAGING WORK-LIFE BALANCE For many people, juggling priorities and obligations was difficult even before the switch to remote working. But having to work at home has shined a brighter spotlight on how we cope and find a healthy work-life balance. HERE ARE SOME OF THE TRICKS PEOPLE HAVE DISCOVERED: * Half said they take frequent short breaks to balance work and home responsibilities.

38 THESTANDARDPS.COM

* 35% are learning to keep their whole household to a schedule.

MASTERING TECHNOLOGICAL CHALLENGES

Technology has been crucial to this adaptation. Almost half (47%) have discovered a new app or service they say they now can’t live without - especially video chat apps that have helped them learn how to communicate better with colleagues and loved ones. As one might expect, a majority of respondents admitted to making conference calls from a common area in their house. However, some said they were stuck calling from a makeshift workspace in a lesser-used part of home. One-fifth of respondents admitted to

calling from a basement or attic, while others said they took work on the go. The research shows 18% have called from their cars, and perhaps most surprisingly, 12% admit taking work calls in the bathroom.

* 39% plan to do more cooking. * 43% said they’re likely to arrange more family dinners. * 39% also said they would do more video chatting.

For many, the time they’ve spent working at home has helped them appreciate how successfully technology has kept them connected on all fronts, including their work and personal lives. REEVALUATING LIFE’S PRIORITIES Overall, the experience of working from home has had everyone reassessing what - and who - is most important to them. Among those who said they’ve discovered new apps, digital services or technology, many said that they were spending significant time using it for family or relationship management. An overwhelming number of survey respondents said that they plan to continue at least one of their new practices even after returning to a “normal” work situation, including:

As a result of spending some more time at home, many have been rethinking their priorities, with nearly half considering buying or using fewer things. Some (16%) have thought about beginning a new career, and others are considering starting their own business (14%). No matter what your work-from-home experience has been, chances are it’s changed your attitudes about work and family life - and how to balance the two - in ways that will stay with you long into the future. *Wakefield Research conducted the LG WFH Survey among 1,000 U.S. adults, working from home due to COVID-19, between April 10 and April 15, 2020, using an email invitation and an online survey. FITNESS

ADJUSTING TO THE NEW NORM BY JILL LANGHAM

Hello my friends, I pray that you are all doing well and that the worst is behind us, but I fear we have a ways to go. I’m just going to jump right in. I tested Positive for Covid or as my test results read, for SARS-CoV2 Antibody. The symptoms and timeline that I shared with you a few months back were indeed due to this Corona Virus (CV). It was the sickest I’ve ever been but am happy to report as I enter into last 30 days of being 64 that I am healthier than I have been in a long time, and have my latest annual blood work to prove it. I’ve learned so much about myself in the last 10 weeks that I feel Proud, which taps into this month’s topic of Global Pride. Although it hasn’t been 100% proven yet, the general consensus

40 THESTANDARDPS.COM

is that people, who are on anti retrovirus medications, have some kind of built in immunity to this particular CV. My heart has been leaping for joy, thinking finally, because of what you; the Gay Community went through with HIV. The loss of 570,000 - 1,000,000 brave soldiers resulted in the discovery of successful anti retrovirus medications that over 24.5 million people are currently on have seemingly protected you this time around rather than sacrificed you. And, if that’s not Global Pride, I don’t know what is! On the other hand, it will be a year in history for many things, but for us, it will always remain, the year that Pride was cancelled almost world wide! Now what can that mean? I thought about it for a long time and was totally bummed out. I had planned to go to Tel Aviv Pride for my 65th birthday, then stay home for a month before

going up to Vancouver, where I’ve never been, for their Pride, then back home for another 2 weeks. I would then fly up to Montreal, another maiden voyage to attend Pride there. From there it was off to both P-Town Pride, and Fire Island, completing my North American Tour, leaving me very disappointed. But, then I wondered, if perhaps there was another way to look at this, one that was in a much more positive light. What if this meant that the community was accepted to the degree that the world could finally take the spotlight off of you and move it onto another topic, like the health of the planet, which, I believe is a reflection of the health of the people. Maybe it was finally time to turn the other cheek and really all come together. Trust me, I am know it’s not that simple and I know I can sound a bit Polly-Anna-ish some of the time, but I do have a lot of faith and a ton of hope that we can change a lot of things right now if we allow ourselves to see the forest through the trees and Believe. Change does start with each one of us, right here and right now. As far as I’m concerned this CV Pandemic will live on to be the

greatest, most historic time in history. The entire world is on hold; we are experiencing a hiatus from our norm. It’s as if the powers that be, and I’m not talking about governments for the moment, hit the reset button, like we are so accustomed to doing with our electronics. Or perhaps, it’s the equivalent of Game Over. Not that there weren’t other huge moments in history but this time as a result or our ability to communicate with every human being world wide we find ourselves fighting the same enemy, that neither wealth, religion or nationality could cure and we were sharing how to best fight it. (I thought about the Space Walk on the moon where approximately 700 million people watched it out of 3.5 billion people alive in 1969 but that left a huge number of people who did not have radio’s, phones or TV’s, or of course no internet, in the dark. Our population has doubled in that time and we are now topping almost 7.6 billion people today.) And every single one of us is susceptible to this Pandemic Virus that makes this huge! It is the best time for us to unite and maybe have Global Pride Celebrations for everyone, where we all beat this Coronavirus enemy together!

RUFUS WAINWRIGHT ‘UNFOLLOW THE RULES’ BY MARTHA TANG GRAMMY® Award-nominated singer-songwriter Rufus Wainwright has unveiled the latest single from his eagerly anticipated new pop album, Unfollow The Rules. “Alone Time” is available now at all DSPs and streaming services. Unfollow The Rules arrives via BMG on Friday, July 10; pre-orders are available now https://rufus.lnk. to/UnfollowTheRules “‘Alone Time’ is the end title of my upcoming album, Unfollow The Rules,” says Wainwright, “an old school record that attempts to take the listener on a rich journey through the myriad of experiences of this thing we call ‘life.’ It is my belief that with everyone and everything, ultimately, all conclusions are about solitude and the acceptance of that fact, and that often this is a very beautiful realization. But today, in these dark times, I’m thinking a lot about the thousands of people who, due to COVID-19, are forced to experience intense isolation at the end of their days in order to save others, and the incredible fear that that must entail. This track is humbly dedicated to them; it is a wish of hope and a prayer for grace that they feel some sense of joy and comfort in knowing they are performing such an incredible act of sacrifice for humanity.” Wainwright is offering fans further solace with his ongoing #Quarantunes series of #MusicalEverydays and #RobeRecitals, presented each day via his official Instagram HERE and Facebook HERE. The daily videos see the singer-songwriter supreme performing new songs from his latest album alongside classic catalog favorites, surprising rarities, and beloved cover versions. An ingenious, compellingly charismatic live artist, Wainwright hopes to see his fans later this year on his epic Unfollow The Rules Tour, with worldwide headline dates and festival performances currently slated to begin this June and then continue into early November. For scheduled dates and other information, please visit rufuswainwright.com/tour. Wainwright’s ninth studio LP and first new pop album since 2012, Unfollow The Rules finds the artist at the peak of his powers, entering artistic maturity with passion, honesty, and a new-found fearlessness while remaining as creative, bold, and mischievous as ever. Produced by Mitchell Froom (Crowded House, Paul McCartney,

Richard Thompson, Suzanne Vega, Randy Newman) at a variety of legendary Los Angeles studios – including Sound City Studios, United Recording, and EastWest Studios – the album serves as both bookend to Act I of an extraordinary career which, like UNFOLLOW THE RULES, began in the studios of Los Angeles, but also now as the first lines of a remarkable new chapter. Inspired by middle age, married life, fatherhood, friends, loss, London, and Laurel Canyon, songs like “Only The People That Love” and the spirited, symphonic “Hatred” find the gifted singer-songwriter ready to tackle new challenges, yet compelled to confront his past by making sense of how he has grown both as a musician and the contended family man he has become. Unfollow The Rules has already been met with remarkable praise from some of Wainwright’s friends, fans, and fellow artists. “This is pop music on a grand scale; sweeping, symphonic, unabashedly emotional and fearlessly agnostic in style and delivery,” says Sting, while Cyndi Lauper described the album as “Rufus’ PET SOUNDS. It sounds like a culmination of everything he has done. It’s a great album, catchy and intelligent.”

TRANSCENDENCE

TAKING PRIDE FOR AN E-RIDE BY CHRISTINA HESTIA VRONAY RUGGLES

Pride in the time of the coronavirus is certainly novel. It feels, not circular, but strange, to be looking at a mass pandemic, that overwhelmingly hurts minority communities, with a lacking government response, leading to thousands upon thousands upon thousands of unnecessary deaths. I have witty thoughts, but they all spin out into a lot of angry political rants that are mostly unintelligible. And that’s not what Pride is about, mostly. Pride is definitely about getting mad and letting some sweet, sweet riots happen. Pride is definitely about overthrowing the system all the while celebrating our community. But Pride is also about finding joy and solidarity within our chosen families. That’s what I want to celebrate this month. That’s what I want to celebrate in the words and glossy pages of The Standard. Celebrating Pride without the parades and the parties, because we can’t have those this year. Us more than any community should know to stay in and not make things worse than they will be in this country.

44 THESTANDARDPS.COM

So, again, I want to speak to my own little discoveries that I’ve made, and the ones I’ve seen others make these past few months. Discoveries in the great field of…“socializing”! So, quick note, historically I’ve been terrible at hanging on to friends. We move away, we move apart, and the friendship simply withers itself to death. Almost all of my friendships have suffered this fate. But, recently, I’ve gotten myself to a point in my life where I have friends that really, really, truly matter to me. Maybe I’ve just never met anyone I’ve really liked before. Which is an…uh…awkward, painful, and strange realization to come to. Maybe this is just what making strong adult friendships are like. Which would make this an equally embarrassing broadcast to the world at large. But, again, I’m getting ahead of myself. So what is my magical “new” “discovery”? Intention! It’s doing things with intent, specifically, relevant to this column

and our times, is hanging out with the cool people and communities that matter the most to me. It isn’t just scheduling zoom hangouts. It’s scheduling them with intent, with mindfulness, and excitement that you get to see your friend, all the things you wanna talk to them about. I’ve absolutely written down lists of things to talk about with friends I consider very close. Not to keep a dead, boring, conversation on life-support, but to get our creative juices flowing, the juices that make our friendships fun, vibrant, exciting, supportive, loving places to be. Things like phone calls and zoom calls can feel restrictive when we’re used to in-person events. And they are restrictive. No doubt about it. But they also offer some new advantages, some new ways to interact, some new avenues of comedy for us to explore and abuse—much to our zoom buddies’ delight or chagrin. I’ve also seen several LGBTQ+ artists host massive birthday parties on Zoom. With dozens of friendly, camera boxed faces and bodies all dancing merrily to the groove. I’ve seen Zoom drag shows. Zoom radio hours. All hosted by much cooler people than I. With Pride around the corner, it may be a little bit too late to

try and throw together a massive zoom-living-room parade. But it’s not too late to grab our usual pride-going crew, whether that’s a crew of one or one-hundred, and let loose in celebrating all the great ways there are to be LGBTQIA+. Maybe a queer Zoom movie watching experience, blending a riff-track format with the lively bobbing heads of all your favorite gals and pals. Maybe it’s a dance party, just to give that loud, discordant audio stream we all know and love from our favorite bars, parties, and parades. Maybe it’s a quiet, serious night in with all of the people you love and know. Maybe it’s uh, a lot more than that. I’m sure leather parties can be done over Zoom, though I’ll leave it to your imaginations on how to that get moving and shaking. In addition, we are no longer attached to our local big city pride parade’s date! We can much more easily celebrate all month long, with much more flexibility on dates! In the end, I don’t know what the future holds, but I know it holds staying inside, staying away from the re-opening bars and parties, and helping being part of the solution. It holds building and kindling amazing friendships.
