COMMENTARY WAKE UP AND SMELL THE COFFEE We in the LBGT community have come a long way and have met many goals that we have established for ourselves; marriage equality, better job opportunities, better acceptance in society to mention a few. But, and there is a big ‘but’; there are many more things to accomplish and we as a community must continue our fight to hold on the rights we have earned.

Gregory T. Angelo, president of Log Cabin Republicans has made the following statements: There’s no way to sugarcoat this: I’m mad as hell — and I know you are, too.

Moments ago, the Republican Party passed the most anti-LGBT Platform in the Party’s 162-year history. Opposition to marriage equality, nonsense about bathrooms, an endorsement of the debunked psychological practice of “pray the gay away”— it’s all in there.

This isn’t my GOP, and I know it’s not yours either. Heck, it’s not even Donald Trump’s! When given a chance to follow the lead of our presumptive presidential nominee and reach out to the LGBT community in the wake of the awful terrorist massacre in Orlando on the gay nightclub Pulse, the Platform Committee said NO. But it gets worse. In their first term of office our next president will likely nominate three Supreme Court Justices. If we ignore our civic duty of voting for a Progressive candidate, like Hillary Clinton, who truly supports the LBGT community, our government could easily reverse all the gains we have achieved.

Electing Ms. Clinton and securing a majority of Democratic Senator will assure you of a Supreme Court that will continue to recognize our community. Ms. Clinton has her issues, but it comes down to her or Donald Trump. Speaking of Senators, please vote for Kamala Harris or Loretta Sanchez individuals who will support us, and get a Supreme Court Justice that will support us.

Boys and girls Wake up and Smell the Coffee. It is critical that you and your peers register and vote in the upcoming presidential and congressional elections.

Vote for the individuals and party that has and will continue to support you.

CELEBRATING COMMUNITY FOR 30 YEARS

From an evening musical and house parties to becoming the second largest event in Palm Springs, Pride has always brought the community together.

The Greater Palm Springs Pride organization commemorates the 1969 Stonewall Rebellion on New York’s Christopher Street and celebrates the advances made toward achieving full equality for all with the annual Pride Week Celebration. The first Pride celebration in Palm Springs was organized 30 years ago and advertised as “Sizzle”, an evening full of laughs, fun, enjoyment, and just plain feeling good about yourself and who you are. In 1986, the Desert Business Association Pride Committee produced the sold-out evening event, showcasing the talents of local entertainers, at the Hilton Rivera Resort Grand Ballroom. Sizzle 2 followed the next year.

Dr. Barry Woods was the Pride Committee Chairman in 1988; and, he was instrumental in bringing Eartha Kitt to Palm Springs to perform at the Pride event held at the Radisson. The next day, a Country Fair hosted by the Desert Women’s Association was held at The Villa. The following year, the new chairman Dr. Herb Lazenby successfully secured Charles Pierce to perform at the 1989 Pride celebration. Pierce presented a sensational show of female impersonation at the McCallum Theater. Herb and his partner Thom co-hosted a fabulous reception bringing the community together and celebrating Pride at their desert villa.

Starting in 1990, Pride events were organized under the direction of the Gay & Lesbian Alliance of the Desert and Greg Pettis served a two-year term as president. The first Pride parade was organized in 1992 and held over Memorial Day weekend at Demuth Park.

It was under the direction of President Richard Black in 1995 that the Pride celebration moved from the hot summer months to November.

Black served as president from 1993 to 1996. It was during this time that the organization started promoting Palm Springs and Palm Springs Pride in other cities. During Black’s term, the Pride board also started to lobby city council to stage the Pride Parade on Palm Canyon Dr. Richard was responsible for aligning Palm Springs Lesbian and Gay Pride with C.A.P.I. (California Association of Pride), an umbrella organization of the Pride groups throughout the state. He served as Vice President of C.A.P.I. from 1994-1995 and President in 1995-1996 when the organization became C.A.P.I. (Consolidated Association of Pride) to include Arizona, Hawaii, Mexico, Nevada, and later New Mexico, Texas, and Utah.1996, Richard attended the International Association of Pride Organizers annual conference where he promoted the global pride slogan, “Pride Without Borders” which was accepted by the international body and used worldwide.

Cathy “C.J.” Pino served as secretary in 1996 and president in 1997 and 1998. She was at the helm when the Palm Springs City Council, led by republican mayor William G. Kleindienst, approved moving the Pride parade to Palm Canyon Drive in 1997. The parade had a new home on Palm Canyon and the festival continued as the Arenas Road Block Party.

Pride hasn’t always been welcome. In 1998, because of their antihomosexual beliefs, members of Desert Chapel congregation marched on city hall protesting the upcoming Pride event. The Pride events continued to grow and in 1998 the celebration offered complimentary bus service. Participants could catch a free ride to the festival location from any Cathedral City and Palm Desert gay bar or hotel location and avoid the congestion and parking challenges downtown.

The 1999 Pride began with the San Diego Gay Band marching down Arenas and onto the festival grounds. In the center of the street was a “Dance Arena” with high energy, non-stop music, gogo dancers, and flaggers performing atop platforms. Saturday night searchlights illuminated the sky from Arenas and Encilia.

In 2000 a critical issue arose regarding the location for the Pride festival. The Arenas Road/Marquis gardens location had been ideal because of the high concentration of gay businesses and residents in the area. Jack Schloeder, Pride president, was unable to procure an acceptable agreement with the landlord for the lot before the November event. A concrete dance floor had been installed for the White Party, which would represent a loss of 30 vendor spaces and create a significant financial loss for the Pride organization. Three locations were reviewed: the Convention Center, Arenas Road area, and the stadium. The Convention Center was simply too expensive.

The Arenas Road/Marquis gardens loss of potential revenue space was prohibitive. The Pride Board vote was unanimous to change location in 2000 to the Palm Springs Stadium, in Sunrise Park, and many critics believed that the move was a bad decision. The 2000 Pride event was a success and the stadium remained home to the Pride festival through 2013. In 2014 the Pride Festival returned to downtown, however, this time the festival was held on Palm Canyon Drive in the heart of Palm Springs.

The primary focus of the Pride Committee continues to promote education and inclusiveness and the celebration of diversity throughout the Coachella Valley. A secondary benefit of the Pride organization’s work is the significant economic impact Pride Week has on the region. During the year the Pride Committee works with other community organizations and volunteers to produce a variety of events such as; the Harvey Milk Diversity Breakfast, the Pride Honors Awards, the Pet Pride Parade, mentorships with other Pride organizations, George Zander Candlelight Vigil, and the Arenas Rd. Block Party. Palm Springs Pride is committed to supporting LGBT youth in the Coachella Valley. In 2015 the Pride Committee was able to raise and donate $20,416 in grants from the Pride Youth Fund and another $30,000 in 2016. The grants supported grassroots

youth engagement activities throughout the Coachella valley schools through mentorship, community engagement, team building and antibullying efforts and to create safe and affirming opportunities for LGBT youth.

Fundraising is done throughout the year and culminates during Palm Springs Pride Week. The 30th Anniversary Pride Week multiday celebration of diversity, inclusivity, art, fashion and culture runs from November 1-6 and includes 25 official events including the Trans Rally, Dyke March and Rally, Broadway Drag pageant, L-Fund Women’s dance, pool parties, the Arenas Road Block party, twoday festival, parade, and the George Zander Candlelight Vigil and March in memory of all the victims of hate crimes.

Palm Springs Pride will host a diverse group of artists including, dancers, singers, musicians, activists, and DJs gathering under the theme of Solidarity through Pride to celebrate diversity, equality, and solidarity. The November 4-6 Pride Celebration will take place in downtown Palm Springs, CA. This year’s all-inclusive Palm Springs Pride Festival lineup will be headlined by ska legends and iconic ‘80s band The English Beat, Book of Love who is celebrating its 30th anniversary with a USA reunion tour. Chicago-based rock ‘n’ roll band, Jinx Titanic and the Ladykillers, queer rock band Pansy Division, and the high energy The Gand Band. The free two-day Pride Festival features all-girl Americana style rock ‘n’ roll band Ashleigh Flynn and the Riveters, East Nashville’s Amelia White and the musical, and romantic duo Branden & James.

GayC/DC the world’s only all-gay tribute to AC/DC and the four-piece all female rock band from Los Angeles No Girlfriends, along with electro pop band Devin Tait and the Traitors will help highlight the unique musical styles that celebrate diversity in our community. The Trans Rally on Sunday, November 6 at 1:00 p.m. will feature performances by Allison Annalora, Lindsey Deaton, and Paulina Angel.

An assortment of electronic, pop, hip hop, and rock ‘n’ roll artists will perform, including singer and guitarist Shea Freedom,

Young Jibwe, an Ojibwa hip-hop artist from Winnipeg, Manitoba, Ciscofoya, and a hot new artist on the rise Yaysh. Popular southern California singer and Rock ‘n’ roll band Tomasina round out the list of stellar performers.

DJ KinkyLoop, DJ Aaron C, and DJ Waide will join over 100 artists scheduled to perform throughout the festival weekend including the DJ Baz “Cuban Nights” show. Festival Emcees include the desert’s hostess, social ambassador and Walk of Stars recipient Bella da BallSM, Pauly and Monks, Ruba Wilson, and KJ as Joan Rivers.

With 100 performances, the diverse lineup of artists will offer something for everyone including special appearances by the Palm Springs Gay Men’s Chorus, Modern Men and Harmonic Voices. All performances take place outdoors on the US Bank stage, Tahquitz stage, Pride Palm Canyon Stage sponsored by Desert AIDS Project, and the Hyatt Palm Springs stage. ASL will be provided for the deaf community at the Arenas, Tahquitz, and Palm Canyon stages.

The Arenas Rd. Block Party on Saturday, Nov 4, 6:00 p.m.11:00 p.m. will feature performances of psychedelic rock, pop, drag, and rock ’n’ roll. The party starts with the Dyke March Rally at 6:00 p.m. then the all-girl rock band Corday. Rusty Waters takes the stage and hosts the Drag Me to Brunch troupe to start the night with feather boas and a little glitter. The night continues with pop

artist Z LALA, and YouTube star Madilyn Bailey whose channel has 2.9 million subscribers. The glamorous and cutting-edge Priscilla Empress of Pop will get you dancing in the street before LA’s punkpop electronica band Ediblehead headlines the night.

The Palm Canyon Pride stage sponsored by the Desert AIDS Project will feature individuals and groups performing, singers, dancers, drag personalities, and celebrity impersonators, all coming together for a great time celebrating Pride. The National Anthem will be sung at noon November 5 by Jerome Elliott and November 6 by Charles Herrera. Vocalists will include Carol Kamenis, Keisha D, Eve Holmes, Robbie Wayne, David Hirsch, David McBride, Allen Jensen, Doug Graham, Terry Larson, Larry Bennett, Phillip Moore, Dan Westfall, Jason Hull, Tony Romano, and others. Groups appearing include the Steven Michael’s Dance Machine, and Carnival Cabaret.

Drag personalities scheduled to appear include Marina Mac, Sheena Wolfe, Anita Rose, Cher-Javier, Candace Camera, and others. Impersonators include River Gibbs as Michael Jackson.

Features of the Pride Festival include a Children’s Headquarters (CHQ) space for games and crafts, the Youth Zone by Safe Schools

Desert Cities, and HIV/AIDS testing by Get Tested Coachella Valley.

Over 150 exhibitors, non-profit organizations, food, and beverage vendors will be on hand along with the Tahquitz and Arenas Rd. Beverage Gardens by Trio.

The Festival is a free community event held on Palm Canyon Dr. between Amado and Baristo Rd. and on Arenas Rd. and Tahquitz Canyon Way from S. Calle Encilia to Balardo. Donations will be accepted at entry points to keep Pride free.

GAME OF THRONE

Game of Throne is what my sweetheart calls the nightly battle between our cat and me over Big Blue.

Bolo is our gray, fourteen year old, lesbian-required cat. Sadly, we’re down to just one kitty and no dogs. We can’t add either to our household because Bolo has diabetes. Her symptoms are triggered by, among other factors, stress. An addition to the family could kill her.

The Throne is Big Blue, a recliner we bought for my rotator cuff and bicep surgery. In recovery, it’s too painful to lie flat and I only had use of one arm for 2 months, so we needed a power recliner. I added the stipulation that it fit both Bolo and me.

Once my shoulder healed enough, I was able to return to my sweetheart’s side and the cat, a heavy sleeper and loud snorer, to her place on us, between us, or as a lump on our feet.

When my sweetheart first mentioned Game of Thrones, I thought she was talking about the current presidential race. Neither of us follows the HBO series. Without that frame of reference, it made sense to me that she would be talking about Clinton vs. Trump, a nightmare that should not be happening. No one in the U.S. has ever worked harder to prepare for the presidency than Hillary Clinton.

Never mind what a complete (insert bad word here) Trump is, Clinton has been in government for so long, the (new bad word) opposition uses her suitability against her.

I pictured he-who-would-be-king attempting to de-throne shewho-qualifies-for-coronation.

There was our blonde equivalent of Kim Jong Un in all his immaturity, surrounded by the likes of supporters Chris Christie, Rudy Giuliani, Mike Tyson and Sarah Palin, headed for the throne as if entitled. And there was Secretary Clinton, followed by a train of millions of women—suffragist foremothers to expectant little girls to underemployed lesbians—carefully navigating the broken glass of a ceiling never before penetrated.

That this should be a contest at all is beyond my comprehension.

People say they don’t trust Clinton. And they trust Trump? People believe the muck that’s flung at Clinton. And they don’t see that their god of business is covered in slime? People say they want the country run like a business? Well, finally, after decades of big business corrupting our government, capitalism may trump democracy.

To call a powerful woman names and to otherwise disparage her—come on, America, we’re better than this old-fashioned misogyny.

Oh, America, where has your soul gone? It used to be said that our streets were lined with gold. Now they are, but not the narrow streets filled with people of color and immigrants, not the dirt roads into rural poverty, not the intersections crowded with protesters, not the crosswalks which the old and/or disabled enter with trepidation as drivers speed through, oblivious.

Hillary Clinton has always shown that she cared for all Americans. From her first universal healthcare attempt to advocating for women employees on Wall Street, she has proven her bonafides, while her challenger has left service workers in the dust, business people unpaid for their labor, and financial failures of colossal size.

But that wasn’t what my sweetheart meant at all. Not the Game, not politics, but our delight in Bolo and Big Blue.

It doesn’t take much to make this marriage gay. We laugh when Bolo’s all snuggled in beside me and I dare to absent myself for some necessity or other. Say, heating up my green tea, refilling my sweetheart’s Diet Coke, giving Bolo her insulin shot, or, goddess forbid, visiting the restroom. When I carefully lower the footrest, our little one glares at me sidelong, perturbed, and moves not a squinch to let me up.

I wriggle out slowly, slowly, making myself as small as humanly possible to avoid further disturbing Her Highness. As soon as my back is turned, my sweetheart tells me with a laugh, Bolo takes over the entire built-for-two seat to soak up whatever warmth I’ve left.

We live with an energy-efficient cat.

On my return, the true tussle begins. Logically, I should be able to retake my fraction of the Throne. As any cat person knows, cat bodies are subject to thermal expansion. The body heat I leave causes Bolo’s furry fourteen pound self to gain mass and spill from her original boundaries. There is probably a mathematical formula for this.

In a gentle voice, I suggest that Bolo make room for me. My sweetheart laughs more as this method is guaranteed to fail.

I begin slowly, slowly, to sit, while extending my hand and arm to reverse the kitty’s diffusion. Again I get the annoyed glare, her eyes mere slits. I wriggle all the way onto Big Blue, petting the kitty, scratching her favorite spots. Finally, I raise the footrest.

This is not nearly as hard as walking the tightrope of public opinion in sexist America. Or as dangerous as being point woman in the gender war.

Miffed, Bolo gets up and, to underscore her disgust, licks her fur where I’ve touched it. With deliberate dignity, Bolo daintily steps over me and leaves to flaunt her magnificent silver grayness on my sweetheart’s couch.

I have, to my bitter disappointment, won our Game of Throne. I beg Bolo to return, I offer kibble, and I debase myself by crawling after her. To no avail. I know how President Obama must feel facing our obstructive congress. I know the stakes are high for gays in this election.

I re-reheat my tea, re-return to the Throne, try to remember what I was working on, focus, and—Bolo’s back, demanding to be petted in apology. By the time she finishes rearranging herself I remember what I was doing: sending a donation to Hillary Clinton, the next president of the United States of America.

ALWAYS OVERBOOKED…

Your closest friend really gets you.

You never have to explain yourself when you’re together; everything said (and unsaid) is understood. There may be many years between you, but it doesn’t matter. There may be differences in background, but no worries. Nothing keeps you apart, and in the new book “Elizabeth and Michael” by Donald Bogle, that might be because you have everything in common. Almost from the moment she was born, Elizabeth Taylor’s life was “like something of a fairy tale…”

She was a beautiful child who grew up to be a beautiful young woman with a mother who made it her mission to ensure that Elizabeth was a star. Sara Taylor enrolled her daughter in all the best classes and was ever on the lookout for opportunity; in 1939, that insistence on fame grew when the family moved to California.

Two years later, as a result of two conversations her father had with influential Hollywood star makers, Elizabeth, not quite ten years old, was invited to try out for Lassie Come Home.

She got the part. Her mother got her wish.

Though Elizabeth Taylor’s later life was filled with stardust, it wasn’t storybook-happy.

She would battle various issues throughout the years; so would another star born halfway across the country at about the same time Elizabeth was dealing with the death of her second husband.

Michael Jackson, the eighth of ten children, grew up in a family that didn’t have much except themselves – and his father, Joe, insisted that it remain that way: the Jackson children were often isolated, because Joe wanted fame for his singing-dancing sons and he demanded that they rehearse nearly constantly. There was little time for anything except practice but for Michael, practice led to stardom.

It was another star, Katharine Hepburn, who was once surprised by Michael’s audacity: eager to meet the favorite actors of his childhood, he asked Hepburn to introduce him to Greta Garbo. She declined.

And then Michael asked to meet Elizabeth Taylor…

Right there, says author Donald Bogle, is the early beginning of a friendship that many called “flat-out weird,” but that really does make sense. As Bogle shows in “Elizabeth and Michael,” few others had so much in common.

If that were the only focus, though, this would be a pretty thin book. Instead, Bogle’s story moves in puddle-like circles around his subjects, and through their lives: by knowing the people who raised and influenced them, we can trace the compassion that an older

Taylor possessed and we see how Jackson built his empire, detail by detail. Bogle also gives readers a vivid sense of the time in which his narrative takes place that, combined with layered anecdotes and the parallels he draws between Taylor’s and Jackson’s lives, makes for an easy, entertaining read.

Certainly, this is book is a fan’s dream but it’s also one that pop culture followers will relish, too. And if that’s the kind of book you want now, then “Elizabeth and Michael” is what you need to get you.

HUMAN RIGHTS CAMPAIGN STYLE The Human Rights Campaign (HRC), the largest national LGBTQ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer) advocacy organization with more than 1.5 million members throughout the country, is proud to be hosting its 17th Annual HRC Palm Springs Garden Party on November 5, 2016 from 1:30-4:30p.m. Location will be given upon ticket purchase. The Advocate for Equality Award will be presented to Brad White and Alexis Ortega; another announcement with the details of the award and background on the recipients will be sharing in the coming weeks.

HRC is a bipartisan organization that works to advance equality based on sexual orientation and gender expression and identity, to ensure that LGBTQ Americans can be open, honest and safe at home, at work and in the community. HRC also creates educational resources and outreach programs for corporate America as well as for all members of the general population who are committed to fairness and equality.

HRC fights for LGBTQ equality across California alongside state and local groups and lawmakers.

Presented by Call Management Resources, the event now brings together more than 700 HRC members, friends, families and allies for an afternoon of celebration and inspiration featuring an open cocktail reception, an extensive silent auction and thought-provoking speakers, special celebrity guests and honorees. Ticket prices start at $75.00 and includes sumptuous hors d’oeuvres and a hosted bar.

The afternoon will feature an incredible live auction featuring a luxurious 10-day Caribbean cruise donated by Crystal Cruises Lines.

The theme of this year’s event is “Equality Forward.” The existing patchwork of legal protections for LGBTQ people in the United States leaves millions subject to uncertainty and potential discrimination.

That’s why the Human Rights Campaign is working with lawmakers and advocates to pass the Equality Act in Congress, as well as strong non-discrimination protections at the state and local levels.

What is the Equality Act, and why it directly impacts the Coachella LGBTQ community?

Even after a marriage victory at the Supreme Court, in most

states in this country, a couple who gets married at 10 a.m. remains at risk of being fired from their jobs by noon and evicted from their home by 2 p.m. simply for posting their wedding photos on Facebook.

In Mommie Smearest, author L. LeSueur reinvents Joan Crawford as a rap artist named mo.m.m.i.e.D. Why, you ask?

It all starts when Joan departs the earthly realm and is stopped at the gates of Hollywood Heaven by a sleeve-tattooed security guard and is told she’s being sent to Hollywood Hell. Of course she attempts to seduce the guard with her Hollywood charm, and it works! Except first she must atone for her earthly sins by exposing the folly of ego, and the related cheapening of “celebrity” that in today’s world, includes reality starlets and civilian selfies.

Joan’s mission is to publicly unmask all the wannabes who act like movie stars but are not. So from a secret base at a Florida trailer park, she launches a raucous plotline that begins with her becoming a hip hopper - because, after all, America is kinda obsessed with hip-hop culture the days.

How have the nature of celebrity and the pursuit of glamour changed since Joan Crawford’s time?

Celebrity is more accessible and diluted today, with reality and now even social media people counting themselves as stars.

In Joan’s life, fans may have copied celebrity glamour, like Joan’s shoulder pads or Farrah Fawcett’s hair-wings, but they would never have thought they actually were stars. Now fans broadcast their own lives and post their brunch menus as if its breaking news. In Mommie Smearest, Joan clarifies herself as a true star, not someone “…who just thinks she is a movie star because she has a goddamned smartphone and a Twitter account.”

Donald Trump launched a presidential campaign from a reality show. His Twitter account is also changing the way he gets his message heard by the masses. Might there be power and legitimacy in these new entertainment mediums?

Reality shows and social media have quantitative power to attract and engage attention. Junk food attracts engagement too but that doesn’t mean it’s good.

Where did the idea for Mommie Smearest originate?

I had this crazy idea of Joan Crawford coming back to today’s world in a Mommie Dearest parody where she blasted the overamplified egos of the reality and selfie starlets of today’s culture.

Joan would admire the Kardashians for brilliantly inverting the Hollywood model. As for Angelina, Joan describes her in the book as “an aesthetic head-on collision between Audrey Hepburn and Courtney Love.”

She would greatly admire Hillary’s drive, intellect and stamina.

In Mommie Smearest, she says there is no mistaking the filly Sarah (Palin) for the thoroughbred Hillary who can actually hold a real job and the world’s respect.

LIFE’S A DRAG A TIP ABOUT TIPS

Hello all of you fabulous wonderful people out there. Well welcome to October in Palm Springs! High social season is off and running. And welcome to autumn. Yes, I know, when the temperatures hit the double digits here in the desert we call that autumn. It’s Ok. You can get out all the fall décor for your home and dream of the Palm tree “leaves” turning shades of gold and yellow and brown. Lol. Of course if that does happen then you better call your gardener.

Well, I wanted to talk to the Queens out there about the issue of drag queen tips. When I say “tips” I’m talking about the dollar bills your friends and fans give you during your performance. I know as I am working the room during a number and gathering tips from the admiring fans, the bills get all crumpled up in your hands. Then I go back and smash them down in the tip jar.

Well when I get home and throw everything into my drag room, the tips sit in there overnight all crumpled up. Well the bank teller just doesn’t like it when you bring in a garbage bag full of crumpled up dollar bills. So would take some time and flatten them out and stack them and put them under a book. I would get them all facing the same direction and put rubber bands around them and feel so proud when I would take them to the teller.

headquarters when my husband, Kevin Baar, walks in. I had just taken the tips out of my purse and they were all in a pile on my worktable. So he decided he would stack them for me. Well, so you have a perspective of my office, it is my office, it is my Pinkie wigs and costume storage and it is my sewing room for quilting so of course the iron and ironing board are always setup. So Kevin turns the iron on and then takes the dollar bills and irons them flat. I was like OMG. All these years of trying to figure out the best method to prepare all of these tips to take to the bank and he cones in one morning and bam, use the iron.

The teller at the bank is so happy with me these days when I go in with crisp dollar bills. They are like brand new. Lol. So there you go ladies. Another MAJOR problem solved for the drag world!

I hope you have the most amazing October. So many things going on in town so there’s no reason for you to stay home. Get up.

GREATER PALM SPRINGS PRIDE ANNOUNCES GRAND MARSHALS

Greater Palm Springs Pride announced this week the Grand Marshals for the annual Palm Springs Pride Parade.

Recognized as the National Grand Marshals are the fallen who lost their lives in the deadliest incident of violence against LGBT people in U.S. history. Highlighting anti-LGBT violence and paying tribute to the 49 victims of the Pulse nightclub massacre in Orlando, Fla. marchers from Palm Springs’ lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and allied communities will carry signs with names and pictures of each victim lost in the June 12 Pulse nightclub shooting. “We will honor and remember the victims of the June 12 shooting and we will stand up for others who have lost their lives to anti-LGBT violence,” said Ron deHarte, President of Greater Palm Springs Pride.

Honored, as Grand Marshal, is award winning writer, director, and producer Del Shores. He has a Golden Palm Star on the Palm Springs Walk of Stars, has received a Certificate of Special Congressional Recognition, and in 2006, Mayor Ron Oden presented Shores with a Key to the City and proclaimed Sordid Lives Day in the City of Palm Springs.

Shores served on boards and performed or produced benefits for numerous organizations including: AID Atlanta, Appetite 4 Life, Desert Aids Project, Different Roads Home, Family Equality Council, Joining Hearts, Marriage Equality USA, Matthew Shepard Foundation, Palm Springs Desert Museum, Resource Center Dallas, and The Trevor Project.

Shores is credited with raising awareness of LGBT visibility on television, in the theatre and on stage through his work. This includes his films Sordid Lives, and Southern Baptist Sissies, and television credits for writing and executive producing Queer As Folk (Seasons 3, 4, 5), Sordid Lives: The Series, and his plays Sordid Lives, Southern Baptist Sissies, and Yellow.

Recognized as Community Grand Marshal is Palm Springs’ very own singer-entertainer Nicky Ciampoli. Acclaimed for his performances as the legendary Broadway star Carol Channing, Nicky entertains audiences and is often seen fundraising for local organizations. TED CASABLANCA GALLERY HIGHLIGHTS MICHAEL CHILDERS Ted Casablanca Gallery, located in downtown Palm Springs, will offer a new Michael Childers photography exhibition entitled “Flaming Creatures.” The exhibition features never-before-seen photographs taken at a drag ball and art gallery in Los Angeles in 1974 and during the Palm Springs White Party in 2002. The exhibition runs November 5 – December 5, 2016. An opening reception honoring the artist will be held at the gallery, located at 388 N. Palm Canyon Drive in Palm Springs, on Saturday, November 5 from 5 – 8 p.m. as a part of the Palm Springs Pride festivities.

“Flaming Creatures” depicts ironic, witty, vibrant, and sometimes bizarre images of the surreal attendees of two wildly different events. The first event, a drag ball, was held in Los Angeles in 1974, and features a wide assortment of the men and women in attendance, many of whom were Arts and Motion Pictures Academy members. Their over-the-top, original costumes were astonishing, humorous, and evoke a sensual feeling. Childers was hired to shoot this drag ball for the Italian men’s Vogue magazine L’Uomo Vogue, but the images have never been displayed in a gallery setting before. The second series, taken during the Palm Springs White Party in 2002, features fit men in revealing attire. In both cases, subjects of the events were allowed to pose however they wished, resulting in fresh and original images. “I was fascinated by the surreal and imaginative costumes of the attendees of these two very different events,” said Childers. “I’ve never shown these images in an exhibition before, and I’m delighted to partner with Ted Casablanca Gallery to finally unveil these compelling images during the 2016 Greater Palm Springs Pride.” www.tedcasablanca.com

WHAT IS THE MEASURE OF PRIDE?

We have advanced equal rights for LGBTQ citizens of the U.S. in hundreds of different legal actions, and there has been real social progress over the last 40 years. The legal validation and growing popular acceptance of non-traditional relationships have opened up a whole new world to those of us who struggled or fought silently through years of pretense and fear and stress. But many people, young people especially, still face tough barriers to a happy life because of who they are.

What are some of the milestones we’ve achieved, and what are the obstacles we still have to overcome? Here are a few of the many events, big and small, that are bringing us recognition, protection of our equal rights, and security: - Marriage equality - Historic court rulings have made same-sex marriage a protected status, and government agencies now recognize the benefits and obligations of such unions to be the same as heterosexual unions have always been. A Department of Treasury study found that California had 41,300 same-sex married couples in 2014, the highest in the U.S. - 20 or more states have now enacted fair employment and fair housing laws that prohibit discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity.

- In June, 2016, President Obama designated the Stonewall National Monument in New York City to reflect the history of the LGBTQ rights movement which had an origin in the Stonewall Inn riots of 1969.

- 5 states and Washington D.C. have recently adopted laws banning the provision of conversion therapy to minors. This is an important first step toward preventing this dangerous and destructive practice from harming youth and promoting bigotry.

- Federal and some state laws prohibit discrimination against transgender youth in access according to their gender identity to school and other public facilities.

in numerous courts around the nation. Support and visitation issues require changes in our view of a “family�, and existing laws are being revised to provide guidance and security for families with 2 mommies or 2 daddies.

Here are a few of the major barriers to the full equality and safety of LGBTQ people: - The White House just hosted a meeting to discuss the unique challenges faced by LGBTQ people in prisons and people living with HIV. Participating in the discussion were150 formerly incarcerated LGBTQ people, advocates and administration leaders.

32 states and 2 territories in the U.S. have HIV-specific criminal laws that support discrimination and inhumane treatment. Lambda Legal reports that a national survey finds that LGBTQ people are around 4% of the U.S. population, but 8% of people in prison identify as LGBTQ. A Federal Criminal Justice Working Group is tasked with litigating cases, drafting policies and developing reforms to reduce the mass incarceration and other harms that current laws and policies bring to the LGBTQ population.

- Many Indian tribes do not recognize same-sex marriage, and decisions in federal courts legalizing it in states and territories do not apply.

Congress, not federal or state courts, has legal authority on Indian lands. Some tribes have adopted same-sex marriage, but most do not permit it. Tribal beliefs and traditions are often cited as the reason for the ban, and it is very difficult to challenge these.

Same-sex people who do decide to live together or marry are likely to lose support, insurance and other benefits provided to heterosexual tribal couples.

- The Federal Bureau of Justice estimates there are around 260,000 hate crimes each year, and they appear to be on the rise.

Many of these incidents are against people in the LGBTQ community, and are committed by one of 1,000 or more known hate groups who exist to push their agenda of violence against diversity.

-

LGBTQ youth face dangerous challenges, just because of

who they are. Recent research across the nation finds that such youth are far more likely to have been raped or assaulted, attempted suicide, taken illegal drugs or engaged in other risky behaviors.

Bullying is finally being recognized and legal steps taken to try to reduce it in some states. But ostracism, physical assaults and other dangers will continue without a strong and urgent campaign to reduce it in our schools.

5 bills allowing foster care agencies to refuse to consider LGBTQ parents

- The American Civil Liberties Union reports that it is up against 91 bills in 30 states which would allow people to use religion as a license to discriminate against women and LGBTQ people.

Among the pending bills, they say, are:

Hello there, my name is Jill Langham and I’ve been asked to introduce myself to you as a new contributor to Standard Magazine.

I’ve been a resident of Palm Springs, CA for the last 11 years, having been on a journey that made very little sense to me, until I found my way to you all in this incredible community.

I turned 61 this past June 21 and had no idea that life could be so fulfilling. I feel so blessed to have found what I call my first home after so many false starts and various cities. Beginning with Buffalo, N.Y., my birthplace, to Atlanta, GA., where I attended Emory University to get my Bachelor’s of Science in Nursing, to Chicago, IL where I worked for the Institute of Psychiatry and specialized in Chemical Dependence, then to both Albuquerque and Santa Fe, N.M., where I switched gears from Nursing to owning a Polish Folk Art store in Santa Fe, to finally coming to Palm Springs to attend my first White Party in 2005.

It was at the actual White Party Dance that I had what I now know was an epiphany as I heard this message, not once but twice, “Move to Palm Springs and train Gay men!” I know it may sound a bit to woo-woo for some, but for me it was a calling and much to my then husband’s dismay we re-located to Palm Springs in 2006, where I began working as a personal trainer and still remain the only female trainer at World Gym. From the onset, the community noticed me. It helped having a body building husband who many hoped was a Bear with a Beard, me, but they soon realized that we were who we claimed to be. My ex, Steve and I were competitive body builders who walked the walk and talked the talk. I loved to dance and we attended circuit parties, Atlantis cruises, Pride Events, and of course every White Party as well as frequented Toucans, Hunters, and Heaven each and every weekend night that we were in town, making our way to the dance floor and essentially holding court.

I think that many in the community assumed that I had always been this whirling dervish or “Energizer Bunny” most of my life, but trust me when I tell you that this is far from the truth. I suffered from a deep depression over the first 44 years of my life. Like many, I had some traumatic childhood experiences that left me both mentally and physically scarred. I was sexually abused as a small child, got run over by a car when I was 10, suffered from both anorexia and

bulimia until age 47, got raped at gunpoint at age 27 and suffered from low-self esteem and self hatred till age 49. Having had an undiagnosed thyroid condition called hypothyroidism as well as a vitamin D deficiency resulted in even deeper depression making my world a very dark, and lonely place.

But, like many of you, I am a survivor and now am thriving beyond my wildest dreams. I’ve been in therapy, analysis, behavioral treatment; a 30-day inpatient stay to deal with the sexual abuse and even tried Prozac as a means of finding myself. I quit drugs, alcohol and cigarettes for 10 years knowing that I would never really know who I am with those substances in my body. I am blessed to be a fighter and even though I had very little relief of my symptoms, I never gave up on myself, for which I am grateful.

can freely love each and every one of you. I can’t exactly explain how this has come to be, but I only know that my love comes from a source greater than my self and I feel best when I am sharing it with you.

Believe it or not, I very rarely smiled during those 49 years and as a matter of fact whenever I did, my smile was hardly contagious let alone natural. That is why today, I smile as often and as a much as I can, because I am truly alive and living. My deepest thanks to you for accepting me and encouraging me to “come out” of myself and to be your “Dancing Queen!”

Finally, over the last few years and while being on my own, after amicably divorcing my husband, I am happy to say that I am living life with a passion that I have never known or trusted before. I feel best when I am out in the community, whether it be at the gym training people, or on the dance floor at Hunter’s, or Happy Hour at Wang’s, or entertaining you at Oscar’s, or even just running into you at Starbucks or Ralph’s. It’s a feeling that I just can’t describe but one that makes my heart sing! I only know this, I am filled with love and it is important that I

I have high hopes for Palm Springs and many ideas that I’d like to share with you through the articles that I will be writing each month.

It is my hope and intention to present to you options you may not have considered for aging and more importantly, living.

STAYING OPTIMISTIC DURING HARD TIMES

Optimism has to be one of the most valuable traits that you can cultivate and it’s something that will make you happier, more popular and even potentially ‘luckier’ if you can maintain that attitude; and never is this more important than when you are going through hard times and when you are facing up to challenges. Of course it’s more difficult to remain optimistic when it feels like everything is crashing down around you, but if you can do it then you will be sure to reap serious rewards.

THE POWER OF POSITIVITY You see being positive is something that brings about a ‘virtuous cycle’ (the opposite of a vicious circle) that in turn results in numerous happy changes in your life. Being positive means that you will attract more people around you. As you’ll find that they enjoy spending time in your company (it will make them feel good about themselves and like everything is going to work out okay). This makes things better for you as you will have the support of all your friends, but it also makes things better for them as your friends and family feel better about themselves and use you as a beacon of confidence.

At the same time if you are able to remain optimistic then you will be happier because you will genuinely believe that things are going to get better which will mean that the situation genuinely isn’t as bad as if you were in the same scenario but feeling threatened by it.

HOW TO REMAIN POSITIVE RECOGNIZE THE VALUE OF POSITIVITY To remain positive then you first of all need to realize the importance of all the above points. In other words you need to recognize just how valuable it is to be positive and how unhelpful it is to be negative. This will then give you the determination that you need in order to remain positive and to consciously try to drive out negative thoughts.

HAVE A PLAN Next you need to have a plan. If you have a plan then this will help you to see a way out, and that in turn will give you hope leading to optimism. Don’t be a passive passenger, but rather make sure that you are making steps to improve matters. Meanwhile have

contingency plans for each outcome so that whatever happens you are ready to deal with matters.

FACE THE WORST CASE SCENARIO Meanwhile, play through the worst possible scenario in your mind. Most likely you will find when you do this that it’s not actually as bad as you thought it would be and that you would still be able to cope. Suddenly then a lot of the fear will leave you.

LOOK FOR POSITIVE ELEMENTS Most clouds have a silver lining, even if it’s simply the fact that you are going to be growing as a person from the events, while in other cases it might be that your loss is another person’s gain, or that it will open up other opportunities. Look for that nugget of good tidings in all the bad news and try to focus a bit on that.

APPRECIATE THE LITTLE THINGS You can also look for the positives that will remain, and sometimes the best way to do this is to appreciate the little things in life. Sometimes I think to myself that as long as I have a good bowl of cereal in the mornings, it will always worth be getting up in the morning no matter what else is going on in my life. While we stand to lose a lot potentially throughout our lives, there are some things that you really can rely upon.

UNDERSTAND THE NATURE OF CHANGE It can also help to think about the nature of change in a more positive light. It is inevitable first of all, so don’t waste too much energy trying to fight it, but at the same time it is also something that only lasts so long. We go through stages of flux in our lives and chaos, but these simply use up too much energy to persist and eventually they ‘settle down’ one way or another. Often it’s just a matter of waiting for that point.

BLACK IS THE COLOR OF LOVE

As soon as I poise the pen to write about the magnificent expressions of black love, I am derailed by another black, police involved shooting, resulting in a death. The recent shooting and death of Terence Crutcher in Tulsa, Oklahoma, hits close because that is my hometown.

While Tulsa is a large and beautiful city, it has the feel of a small town. When you live in a small town, a couple of realities exist. One is, “If you don’t know what you’re doing, there is someone in town who thinks they do.”(smile) Another reality is, when you hear a siren you don’t have the luxury of brushing it off because you automatically know that you will know who it is or you will know their people.

When I grew up in Tulsa, my mother, Minister Shirlie Scoggins Sullivan, was the director of a community-based choir, The Ghetto Youth Singers. The choir was created for upward mobility of young people. We toured across the country in commercial buses, leaving trail of saved souls and torn up pews, because when we sang, it was gonna be some “shoutin’ up in der!”(smile) I had the pleasure of parading the streets with Alfre Woodard, Charlie Wilson and the entire Gap band. Just a little trivia, the GAP band’s name originates from the name of the streets in Tulsa, Greenwood, Archer and Pine.

It was during some of those times that we marched the streets of Tulsa wearing blue jeans and matching jean jackets, red, black and green accessories and, of course, the biggest afro, adorned with an “afro pick” in your hair, with a black fist exposed on the end of the handle.

Then, as it should be now, we were TAUGHT, “how to stay ALIVE”, with regards to police contact. Ironically, my career led me to become an Oklahoma City Police Officer. I learned, first hand, what I know to be true. It’s not the color, it’s the kind. There is NO WAY we can deny the disparity of DEATHS of black people, compared to whites, at the hands of police officers. As we say in the country, “It ain’t no need to get swole up.” It’s just a fact! As a former police officer, EVERY police officer should not be held accountable for the actions of SOME. Just like EVERY black person should not be held accountable for the actions of SOME. We have all mourned the losses of 123 black deaths across the country, just for the year of 2016. I dare not say, “So far”.

I find it nothing less than beautiful that, people of ALL races are united in demanding that, BLACK LIVES MATTER! As soon as it’s ALL races dying, THEN, we can change our vernacular. When we are marching for drunk drivers, we ONLY speak of drunk drivers. There are no banners or conversational topic changes from drunk driving to discuss depression. It is in that vein, that while we are trying to SAVE BLACK LIVES, it is just as rude and offensive for someone to want to change the topic to anything else. And yes, ALL lives DO matter. It takes ALL of our lives to help keep blacks alive.

Thirty years ago, the Palm Springs Pride celebration began as a simple dinner and variety show showcasing the talents of local entertainers at the Riviera Resort grand ballroom. The first Pride Parade named the Desert Gay and Lesbian Pride Parade took to the streets of Palm Springs with 35 units and was greeted by hundreds of men and

1969 June 28 - the community fights back following a police raid on the Stonewall Inn, a gay bar in Greenwich Village (police harassment was common at that time for gay bar patrons due to a NYC law requiring a minimum of three articles of “genderappropriate clothing”). Later termed “the Stonewall Uprising”, the riot lasts three days.

1970 The nation’s first Gay Pride March is held in New York City.

1974 American Psychological Association removes homosexuality from its list of psychological disorders.

1978 Gilbert Baker designs the Rainbow Flag to fly in the San Francisco Gay Freedom Day Parade. Gilbert Baker would later be honored by Palm Springs Pride with a 2011 Lifetime Achievement Award.

1989 Pride featured a Friday reception at the Fashion Plaza, the Saturday Eartha Kitt show at the Radisson Resort, and a Sunday Country Fair hosted by the Desert Women’s Association at The Villa.

1981 The first reference to AIDS, then known as Gay-Related Immune Disease or GRID, appeared in both medical journals and the mainstream press.

1991 Palm Springs chapter of PFLAG, an organization formed to “help others unlearn the homophobia inherent in the socialization process”, holds its first meeting. They later received their 501c3 in March of 1994.

The Parade and Festival was hosted by the Gay & Lesbian Alliance of the Desert and held over Memorial Day weekend at Demuth Park.

1995 Pride Parade and Festival moved from Memorial Day Weekend to Veterans Day Weekend.

1996 Parade was held on Ramon Road. David Mixner was the Grand Marshal of the Pride Parade.

1997 The Pride parade moved to Palm Canyon Drive in 1997 and Michael Feinstein was the Grand Marshal. Members of Desert Chapel congregation marched on city hall to protest the move because of their anti-homosexual beliefs. Pride organization formally changed its name to Greater Palm Springs Pride. Pride Festival moved from Demuth Park to Arenas Rd. Cathedral City - In 1997, the city approved the first domestic partnership ordinance in the area.

1998 The Pride organization incorporated under the name of Greater Palm Springs Pride as a nonprofit organization November 4, 1998.

2000 Pride Festival moves from

Arenas Rd and is held in the Angels Baseball Stadium in Sunrise Park. The Arenas Road/ Marquis gardens location was ideal because of the high concentration of gay businesses and residents in the area. Critics believed that the move from the “streetfair” atmosphere of Arenas to the “festival village” at the Sunrise Stadium, was a bad decision. Dick Haskamp named first Community Grand Marshal.

2003 The festival and parade, which has experienced a 20% growth rate in the last five years, attracted close to 60,000 attendees over the two-day period in 2003, making it the largest annual special event in the city of Palm Springs.

2004 Ron Oden, the first openly gay Mayor of Palm Springs, and the first openly gay, African American mayor of any city in the U.S. rides in Palm Springs Pride Parade.

2008 Palm Springs Biker Chicks lead the parade for the first time.

2009 Undercover sex sting operation by the City of Palm Springs Police Department occurs in June in the Warm Sands neighborhood. Cleve Jones served as Celebrity Grand Marshal.

2010 The Greater Palm Springs Pride organization announced on July 19, 2010 the election of LGBT rights activist Ron deHarte to its board of directors. deHarte will be responsible for working closely with the board and community stakeholders in guiding the organization in the fulfillment of its mission.

In 2010, official Pride events attracted 57,502 attendees, who pumped $12.3 million of direct spending in Palm Springs.

2011 The economic impact from organization and audience expenditures in Palm Springs increased in 2011 to $14.1 million.

On the heels of a city manager’s report that admitted wrongdoing in the Warm Sands sex sting that exclusively targeted men who have sex with men, the Palm Springs Police Chief David Dominguez, who led that sting operation, announced his retirement.

Communidad Orgullo GLBT Tijuana and Greater Palm Springs Pride jointly

announced on May 27, 2011 that human rights activist and board member of Palm Springs Pride Ron deHarte will be the international grand marshal of the 2011 Marcha de Orgullo GLBT Tijuana, in Tijuana, Baja California Mexico.

2013 25th Anniversary AIDS Walk is held as part of annual Pride Parade.

LGBT Center of the Desert presents Center Stage, a benefit concert with special guest emcee at the Palm Springs Convention Center on Thursday, October 31, 2013.

This was the first time The Center held their annual fundraiser during the annual Pride week celebration.

2014 The City of Palm Springs approves closing Palm Canyon Dr. for two days to accommodate the Pride Festival’s move to downtown Palm Springs. The Festival takes place on Palm Canyon Dr from Amado to Baristo and on Tahquitz and Arenas Rd between Indian Canyon and Belardo. The Festival main stage is set up on Arenas Rd between Calle Encilia and Indian Canyon.

The Pride Parade route is changed to accommodate the Pride Festival’s move to Palm Canyon Dr. and the street closure becomes the largest closure in the city’s history.

2015 November 1, George and Chris Zander are attacked after leaving Arenas Rd. (George Zander later dies on December 10, 2015).

Palm Springs Pride named “Best 11 Gay Pride Festival Trips on the Planet” by Jetsetter Magazine in 2015.

Data from attendees participating in official events including the Pride Festival and Pride Parade reveals that the 2015 human rights and cultural tourism celebration generated over $22 million dollars of organization and audience expenditures in the region. The impact increased from $20 million in 2014.

Greater Palm Springs Pride announces $20,461 donation to GSA Clubs of Coachella Valley from the Pride Youth Fund. The funds are intended to assist students and school advisors at the grassroots level and include $7,500 in grants for 15 GSAs to support

programs and activity of their choosing.

First Dyke March and Rally occurs with 300 participants gathering at the Convention Center and marching to Palm Canyon and then down to Arenas Rd. 2015 Desert Business Association named Ron deHarte, President of Palm Springs Pride, as the Outstanding Community Service Leader.

2016 Celebrating 30th anniversary of Pride in the Coachella Valley, the Pride Parade will have 175 contingents and honor the fallen who lost their lives in the deadliest incident of violence against LGBT people in U.S. history. Highlighting anti-LGBT violence and paying tribute to the 49 victims of the Pulse nightclub massacre in Orlando, Fla., marchers from Palm Springs’ lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and allied communities will carry signs with names and pictures of each victim lost in the June 12 Pulse nightclub shooting.
