Food Samaritans is delighted to announce that its upcoming Evening Under the Stars Garden Party will be held on Sunday, October 13 in the picturesque setting of Brad Lampley and Rigo Lomeli’s Old Las Palmas estate. This enchanting event promises to be an exquisite evening of philanthropy, entertainment, and community camaraderie.
The highlight of the evening will be a special performance by the acclaimed singer-songwriter, Debby Holiday. Known for her soulstirring music and captivating stage presence, Holiday will serenade guests under the starlit sky, creating an unforgettable atmosphere of joy and inspiration.
AAP – Food Samaritans’ successful ‘re-boot’ of Evening Under the Stars last October was well received. The garden party format event raised funds to help AAP – Food Samaritans support its critically needed programs that provide food for low-income people living with chronic illnesses in Palm Springs and surrounding communities.
C.E.O. Mark Anton said of the event’s format: “Post COVID, the event was reimagined, and in 2023 we brought it back to our roots and had a celebration in one of the most spectacular estates in Palm
Springs, featuring abundant food and drink and a $200 ticket price that was more in line with our grass-roots nature.
This October, in celebration of our supporters, we are honored to present Community Impact Awards to Bonnie and Alan Cashman, Nino Eilets, and Ruta Lee. We recognize their long-standing partnerships with us and all that they do in the community. We’ll complete the evening with a special performance by the superb Debby Holiday whose talent and generosity align perfectly with our mission to provide nutritional support to individuals facing chronic illnesses in our community.
Please join us on Sunday, October 13 for another magical evening. We are currently seeking event sponsorships, which will enable us to keep the ticket price at $200 each.”
The event emcee will be Emmy award winner Brooke Beare, joined by celebrity auctioneer Lenny Broberg. Sponsorship opportunities, more information about the honorees, and tickets for the Evening Under the Stars are available now at aapfoodsamaritans.org, offering an opportunity for attendees to support a worthy cause while enjoying an enchanting evening of music and celebration.
COVER / ABOUT
ABOUT EVENING UNDER THE STARS
AAP – Food Samaritans was originally founded in 1991 as AIDS Assistance Program with the goal of helping the most at-risk members of the Greater Palm Springs community – people who are low-income and compromised by HIV/AIDS. The organization has since expanded its services to include people suffering from cancer, MS, heart or liver disease, and other chronic illnesses. Its ongoing mission is to ensure that all AAP – Food Samaritans clients can continue to live their lives with dignity and self-respect.
The organization was initiated by a small group of concerned citizens led by the late Gloria Greene (who began feeding these desperate souls from out of the back door of her restaurant) and Jeannette Rockefeller and remains a grass roots community-based organization. It is led by a very small staff and a volunteer board of directors who work to assure that the largest percentage of every donated dollar goes directly to client services. AAP raises 100% of its operational budget through private donations, community and local business support, special events and foundation grants. It receives no Federal or State funding.
AAP – Food Samaritans distributes monthly food vouchers to each client. Each client is carefully vetted to confirm income and residency and some are randomly tested for illegal drug use. Vouchers are redeemable for all items except alcohol, tobacco or pet products. Clients may use these vouchers for food, household
needs such as toiletries, hygienic products, and other personal items. Since its inception, AAP has distributed more than $13 million in direct client service to more than 2,750 clients. AAP clients get by on an annual income of less than $18,735, and most of our clients rarely, if ever, make it off of the client list.
Living with a chronic illness is not easy. HIV/AIDS continues to be a major health challenge in the Coachella Valley and across the world. While some people who have a diagnosis of HIV or AIDS are able to work and maintain a relatively healthy lifestyle, AAP serves those who are unable to do so. Cancer, Multiple Sclerosis, heart and liver disease all present similar challenges to those that must live with these devastating conditions. While there have been developments in treating these chronic illnesses, people who suffer from these are presented with daily challenges. AAP – Food Samaritans is there to provide comfort and support and improve the quality of life for those who need it the most.
Evening Under the Stars is an opportunity for AAP-Food Samaritans to recognize those individuals and organizations who have worked tirelessly on AAP-Food Samaritans behalf throughout the years. It is with great pride that the organization is able to acknowledge the dedication of these wonderful, caring people who have supported AAP-Food Samaritans and other Coachella Valley nonprofit organizations.

THE INCOMPARABLE DEBBY HOLIDAY
BY NESTOR ASTRALA
Debby Holiday, International singer/songwriter with 17 Billboard Top 20 Dance Chart Hits, broke onto the dance scene with her #5 Billboard summer anthem Dive in 2004. Holiday followed the smash hit Dive with her power ballad Half A Mile Away, which shot into the Billboard Top 10, along with Debby’s follow-up dance hit Bring It On. All of Debby’s subsequent dance singles broke into the Billboard Top 20 including, Piece of My Love & Surrender Me (with the incredible Tony Moran), Joyful Sound, featured in the hit show Sordid Lives: The Series, from writer/director/producer Del Shores, starring Olivia Newton John.
Debby experienced every aspect of the music industry early on while growing up in Los Angeles, Ca. Her father Jimmy Holiday was a passionate and soulful artist, topping the charts with several of his own singles before going on to co-write such hits as Understanding
by Ray Charles and Jackie DeShannon’s Put A Little Love In Your Heart. Another standard All I Ever Need Is You, turned out to not only be a top 10 single for Sonny and Cher – but also went on to be a huge country hit for Kenny Rogers and Dottie West. Naturally, this eclectic mix of music strongly influenced Debby’s own unique and compelling sound.
In 2012, Debby hit the Billboard charts twice. Never Give Up with the amazing San Francisco based DJ Phil B soared to #9 and her next single, Key To Your Soul (co-written with DJ John LePage & Jeff Fedak) hit #21 and includes an anti-bullying themed video for the song (directed by Del Shores). In 2015 her single I Like You with Grammy Winning Producer/DJ Tony Moran hit #5 on the Billboard dance charts. Debby’s next single Lift with Indie label “Dirty Disco” hit #5 on the Billboard dance club play charts.
COVER
2017 brought the release of Debby’s Double Album ‘Free2B’ (half rock/half dance), which allowed her to fully embrace her two musical sides. In 2020 Debby hit the Billboard charts again as the #1 breakout in the country with her latest original song with Brett Oosterhaus Living For the Music. 2021 saw her Love & Beats with Brett Oosterhaus hit the Beatport charts and remain at the top of sales. In 2022 Debby’s latest release was another international success with her version of the Tina Turner song I Can’t Stand the Rain with Russ Rich on the Swishcraft label. Her latest original dance single Find A Way with Dirty Disco landed at #1 on the House of Pride Radio chart and stayed there for three weeks. Debby has 2 new singles dropping in 2024 and has started work on her next full-length album.
Debby took some time from her super busy schedule to speak with The Standard Magazine to shed some light on the story behind the artist. Here’s what she had to say.
Debby, thank you for taking the time, so let’s get right to it.
When did you first realize you wanted to become a musical artist?
Well growing up in a home filled with successful musicians would make it seem like the obvious choice but I resisted at first & dove into the world of ballet & jazz dancing, even being granted a scholarship to Alvin Ailey. Then at 16, I bought my first guitar & my whole dance plan was swiftly derailed by the purchase of that beautiful Ovation acoustic.
You come from a musical family background; can you say that has had a big influence on the direction you took regarding your career?
Hmmm yes & no. Yes, because my father had me writing songs when I was 7 (which is probably why I initially resisted). And no because I went in the opposite direction of Pop & Country like my father & insisted felt the pull from rock n roll!
Who are your biggest musical inspirations and why?
Bowie will always be my number 1. I always felt a little different than the kids around me growing up. Bowie somehow always made me feel like I’d Survive it all. His song “Five Years” is my “if I were stuck on a desert island” choice. Ha! And Brandi Carlile & The Black Pumas are my 2 go to artists because of lyrics & vibe. Vocals that make you feel something… REALLY feel something. Yes, please!
What is your songwriting process and what inspires you the most when writing songs?
Luckily there is no one way. I’m all over the map depending on who I write with. Sometimes the music comes first. Or the lyrics or the melody. Keeping the process fluid & also keeps it fresh for me.
You’ve performed in Palm Springs many times. What do you enjoy most about audiences here and what are you looking forward the most about performing at Evening Under the Stars?
The warmth! Not the actual smoldering temps - the warmth of audiences here. I feel like Palm Springs crowds are ready to participate in a good time. Then when you add the myriad of friends I have in PS, it makes for a positive trek from LA. An Evening Under the Stars will benefit an amazing cause. That makes any performance sweeter.
Peace over Violence is an organization that you actively support, can you let our readers know a bit about the organization?
Peace over Violence - Helps families live free of domestic & sexual abuse. Between my own childhood experiences & what we see in this world, I can’t think of a worthier cause.
If you could give one piece of advice to your younger self, what would it be?
STOP BEATING YOURSELF UP! Find grace in life’s lessons & laugh at your missteps. There is no peace in perfection. Being you is more than enough! And ... you are lovable - just as you are!
If you could do a collaboration with any artist, living or not, who would that be and why?
No longer with us: BOWIE - I might stammer looking into those eyes but he was my childhood fave so definitely The Starman. Living: I’d have to say Eric Burton from the Black Pumas. That writing style is both so familiar & still so unique. Would love to just riff together & see where it went.
I notice that the great Tina Turner has a special place in your heart, so much so that you have an entire tribute show dedicated to her; with so many iconic singers past & present, why did you choose to honor her?
Truly a happy accident. I was asked to sing Proud Mary for the Ultimate Jam Night at the Whisky A Go Go a few years ago & realized how easily her melodies & gritty growls came to me. And of course, we all know her legendary road from battered to brave survivor. I also “get” her love for rock n roll. As a black woman in the rock world it’s always been “a thing”. Which is why I believe she wanted to be remembered as. “The Queen of Rock n Roll” Plus - she has so many hits & they’re all so much fun to perform!
What do you love the most about performing live?
Connecting!! The joy, the smiles, the dancing - looking out into an audience and knowing they FEEL something. Music heals the listener & the artist!
What’s next for Debby Holiday?
So much!! I started an album in 2023 not realizing my songwriting tank was exhausted. After the Covid shut down I was so ready to
share new music, but when I sat down to write; the proverbial well was dry. Ugh! Hated that feeling. Like just about everyone, once the world slowed down it gave you time to reconnect with some parts of your spirit & brain you all too often ignore. I needed to regroup & shake up the writing process. So, I did. I’m writing with several new people & enjoying writing again. With 23 dance singles & 5 full length rock albums (1 being a double album with 26 songs) it’s ok that I took a wee bit of a break. We humans - we push ourselves sometimes & lose the joy. Well, joy is back on the menu in more ways than one. So, I’m excited about my new album for 2025 & even more excited about the adventure we call life. Let’s get to it !!

BOOK REVIEW
ALWAYS OVERBOOKED
BY TERRI SCHLICHENMEYER
Your child has recently told you a secret that they can’t hold tight anymore.
You’ve suspected what they’re about to say for a long time. When they were small, they weren’t like other children. They may have even told you what they were thinking, even before they knew it themselves. But now you know, for sure... and so, going forward, you’re the loving parent of a child who’s trans, and it’s a learning curve.
These two books might help... Surely, you must think that there has to be some science behind gender and identity, right? In “Free to Be: Understanding Kids & Gender Identity” by Jack Turban, MD (Atria, $29.99), you’ll follow the lives and struggles of three trans and gender diverse kids, Kyle, Sam, and Meredith, as Turban explains what science knows about genetics and sexuality.
To gain a basic understanding of the subject, says Turban, we need to look back in history to see how gender identity was perceived in the past and the attitudes that our ancestors held. He then touches upon language and “misnaming,” how social constructs attempt to set a child’s gender identity before it’s fully known, and why mothers often catch “blame” for something that’s never anyone’s “fault.” Further information on biology, puberty blockers, gender reassignment surgery for young trans people, and the “politics” of gender diversity round out this book nicely.
your VIP want it), finding support, the politics of being trans, the stressors of medical treatment, and what it might be like to have even brief regrets. Greene finishes his book with advice on getting an education and living as a trans person.
For the parent who wants a deeper dive into what makes their child tick and what they can do to make that kid’s life easier, this compassionate book is the one to read.
If you’re just finding out that your child is trans, then “My Child is Trans, Now What?” by Ben V. Greene (Rowman & Littlefield, $26.95) is a book to reach for now.
Beginning with the things you’ll want to know and understand immediately, this book is assuring and soothing – look, and you’ll see the word “joy” in its subtitle. Greene calls trans kids “VIPs,” and he means it, which sets a relaxing tone for what’s to come here.
In sharing his own experiences, Greene stresses that every trans experience is different, and he touches often upon his coming out. This launches discussions on things like bathrooms, therapy (if you or
“My Child is Trans, Now What?” is truly more of a book for parents and loved ones of trans teens or young adults. What’s in here goes well beyond childhood, so be aware before you reach for it on the shelf.
And if these books aren’t enough, or don’t quite fit what you need, be sure to ask your favorite bookseller or librarian for more. In recent years, more and more authors have been willing to share their own journeys, making the transition one that doesn’t have to be so secret anymore.

LGBTQ POLITICS: A COMPLEX AND EVOLVING LANDSCAPE
BY JOSHUA HERNANDEZ
LGBTQ politics encompasses the advocacy for the rights and interests of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ+) individuals. It involves a range of issues, including civil rights, marriage equality, non-discrimination laws, healthcare access, and representation in government and society.
Historical Context
The history of LGBTQ politics is marked by both progress and setbacks. In the early 20th century, LGBTQ+ individuals faced widespread discrimination and criminalization. The Stonewall Riots of 1969 in New York City marked a turning point, galvanizing the LGBTQ+ community and leading to the formation of activist organizations.
Civil Rights and Marriage Equality
One of the central aims of LGBTQ+ politics has been securing civil rights and marriage equality. In the United States, the Supreme Court ruled in 2015 that same-sex couples have the constitutional right to marry. However, many other countries around the world still do not recognize same-sex marriage.
Non-Discrimination Laws
Non-discrimination laws protect LGBTQ+ individuals from being discriminated against in employment, housing, and other areas of public life. Many countries have passed such laws, but they vary in scope and effectiveness.
Healthcare Access
LGBTQ+ individuals often face barriers to healthcare access, such as discrimination from healthcare providers and lack of insurance coverage for gender-affirming care. LGBTQ+ politics advocates for policies that ensure equitable access to healthcare for all.
Representation
Increasing LGBTQ+ representation in government and society is crucial for ensuring that the voices and experiences of LGBTQ+ individuals are heard. LGBTQ+ politicians and public figures can challenge stereotypes and promote policies that support LGBTQ+ rights.
Current Issues
LGBTQ+ politics continues to evolve, with new issues emerging and old ones persisting.
SOME OF THE CURRENT CHALLENGES INCLUDE:
Violence
LGBTQ individuals are disproportionately targeted for violence. Transgender people, in particular, face high rates of violence and murder. The current political climate has further exacerbated this violence.
Mental health impacts
The challenges and discrimination faced by LGBTQ individuals can have significant impacts on their mental health. LGBTQ people are more likely to experience depression, anxiety, and suicidal thoughts.
Anti-transgender legislation
In recent years, there has been a wave of anti-transgender legislation introduced in the United States and other countries, targeting transgender youth and restricting access to genderaffirming care.
Global persecution
In many parts of the world, LGBTQ+ individuals continue to face persecution, violence, and discrimination.
Intersectionality
LGBTQ+ individuals often experience multiple forms of oppression, such as racism, sexism, and classism. LGBTQ+ politics must address these intersectionalitys to ensure true equality.
Future Directions
The future of LGBTQ+ politics will likely involve continued
FEATURE
advocacy for civil rights, healthcare access, and representation. It will also require addressing emerging issues such as anti-transgender legislation and global persecution. By building coalitions and working together, the LGBTQ+ community can continue to make progress towards a more just and equitable society.
RESPONSES FROM THE LGBTQ COMMUNITY
Despite the challenges we face, the LGBTQ community has remained resilient. LGBTQ individuals and organizations have fought back against discrimination and violence. We have organized protests, lobbied for change, and provided support and resources to LGBTQ people in need.
Increased activism
The current political climate has inspired LGBTQ people to become more active in politics and advocacy, demanding change and fighting for equal rights.
Community support
LGBTQ organizations and communities are providing essential support and resources to LGBTQ individuals. Offering safe spaces, mental health services, and legal assistance.
Resilience
LGBTQ individuals have shown remarkable resilience in the face of adversity. We are continuing to live our lives authentically and to fight for our rights. The LGBTQ community is demanding change and are working to create a more just and equitable society for all.

Q&A NAKED IN THE DESERT
BY SAM McCONNELL
Naked yoga and fitness instructor Dan Carter and artist Saul Lyons are hosting a long weekend of uninhibited camaraderie under the hot desert sun at INNdulge Palm Springs.
Self Discovery - A Naked Mindfulness Retreat will take place September 26-30 and will feature classes such as “Yoga for Sexual Health”, “Embracing the Artist Inside You”, and “Drum Up Your Bum”; all with an emphasis on self-discovery and encouraging men to connect and fall in love with their bodies.
According to Jon Jackson, a co-owner of INNdulge, the clothingoptional resort in Palm Springs, while women have embraced the body positivity movement, body acceptance among men has been slow to catch on. “Men suffer silently while the media bombards us with idealized images of what our bodies should look like,” he says. “It’s time men develop pride and a love for the skin they are in.”
“I used to treat every retreat the same way, but after four years of leading this getaway, I’ve learned that every group brings a distinct variety of personalities and needs,” Dan Carter adds. “Much of the long weekend is planned out, but we often shift the schedule to prioritize creating a community among this unique group of individuals.”
He’s also reshaped the weekend from feedback he’s received from previous retreats. “We’ve added new workshops and classes,
including a Nude Drawing workshop that I am really passionate about!” We spoke with Dan Carter to learn more.
Why do you think men have been slow to embrace the body positivity movement?
Dan Carter: I think many men, particularly those who identify as gay, bi, trans, or queer, were taught to ignore or completely hide their emotions from a very early age. When you shut yourself off from that kind of thinking and feeling, a lot of resentment and a lack of self-esteem can build up. Fortunately, I believe this trend is changing with the culture, and I’m happy to be a part of that shift.
How does being naked in the desert help to encourage men to love their bodies?
Dan Carter: There are plenty of lovely places to be naked and fall in love with your body. However, I think the desert is a very special place for this. Thanks to the hot, dry weather, guys who might normally be shy about being naked quickly forget they’re not wearing clothes. The extra dose of vitamin D and the remarkable desert landscape certainly keep the feel-good hormones flowing!
What are some of the highlights of the retreat?
Dan Carter: I am particularly excited to welcome Saul Lyons for our first-ever Nude Drawing class on the retreat! Saul is a completely self-taught artist who will show guys that even if they doubt their
creative skills, there is an artist inside each of them.
Why is naked drawing a key element of the weekend?
Dan Carter: Much like yoga, drawing is a skill that takes practice and a love for the human form. I like to think of naked yoga and drawing as a fine wine and cheese pairing; they are unique modalities, but together they create a tantalizing fusion that allows for self-love and discovery. In addition to Saul’s workshop, the hike through the desert is an absolute favorite of mine, and I don’t know of anywhere else in the world where you can do something like that.
Is it important that most activities be held outside?
Dan Carter: Anytime we reconnect with nature and get off our electronic devices, I think we are doing a tremendous service to ourselves. When we’re outside and naked, it’s much easier to put away our phones and appreciate the splendor of the Coachella Valley.
Are meals included in the weekend?
Dan Carter: Breakfast and one meal a day are included in the price of the retreat. We intentionally leave space and time in the schedule to encourage retreat participants to explore the rich food scene of Palm Springs.
What are the key lessons and/or takeaways that you learned from previous retreats?
Dan Carter: I used to treat every retreat the same way, but after four years of leading this getaway, I’ve learned that every group brings a distinct variety of personalities and needs. Much of the long weekend is planned out, but we often shift the schedule to prioritize creating a community among this unique group of individuals.

TECH IS SOCIAL MEDIA BRINGING YOU DOWN?
BY JAIME WELCH
When it comes to your social media feed, do you ever feel like you’re stuck in a bad place? Do you even dread opening up your feed sometimes because of all the negativity you might find there? Whatever happened to those funny memes, animal videos, positive interactions with friends and family, even informational DIYs and hacks?
Sometimes, it can feel like social media algorithms are not generating the mix of content needed to live a well-balanced life.
Algorithms can be a mystery to people who aren’t data analysts, but they play a significant role in what we see on social media. While designed to make our feeds more interesting and relevant, recent research has shown that these algorithms can send us down niche rabbit holes and promote negative conversations that can directly impact mental health.
Sure, some negative content on your feeds is expected, especially because world events are an important element of a diverse social media diet. But algorithms could be pushing down the feel-good content to encourage more doomscrolling. It happens more than you think.
But can you do anything about it? It turns out, you can.
LG Electronics recently commissioned a new global survey, in keeping with their mission to spread the ethos of Life’s Good, to understand how social media platforms affect users’ well-being. It found what many of us experience every day - social media is a source of anxiety and stress, but also a place where we turn to be entertained. More than half of survey respondents reported their social media feeds consist of an equal or greater amount of negative content vs. positive content, with nearly a quarter saying that negative content on their social media feeds has increased their anxiety and made them unhappy.
Sound familiar? Here’s what can you do to bring that happy feeling back to your social media feed.
* Proactively search for the content you like. From funny cat videos to food hacks to motivational speeches, the content is out there if you look for it.
* Encourage your favorite creators to keep making content that you enjoy.
* Engage with posts you like and disengage with content you don’t. This sounds obvious, but people don’t often think about it.
* When engaging with content you enjoy, keep in mind, there are real humans with emotions behind the screens. Like or comment something positive on uplifting content and the algorithm will continue to feed you more of the same.
A great example of this is LG’s new “Optimism Your Feed” campaign, which gives social media users a head start on shaping the content they want to consume by creating a positive playlist of TikTok and YouTube content. The playlist features feel-good content from popular creators and aims to help those who want to retrain their algorithm to bring more optimism to their feed by inviting them to proactively engage with positive content.
Here’s how it works:
* Search for @lg_lifesgood on TikTok, or go to LG’s channel on YouTube.
* Find Optimism Your Feed and start scrolling!
* Engage with content you like by tapping, liking, commenting or sharing.
This isn’t just about getting people to interact with fun videos. It’s about using that positive content to give people the power to change the algorithms on their feeds. By interacting with this content, it will, in turn, draw in even more positive content from other sources.
Social media can be both good for us and bad for us at the same time, so it’s important to remember there are ways we can try to proactively take more control of our social media experience. By being more conscious about what we choose to engage with, we can bring stronger balance, inspiration and happiness to our lives.
If we focus on optimism, we will be better equipped to deal with life’s challenges and build a happier life.
And who doesn’t need that, right?
NYE HIGHLIGHTS DAP HEALTH
EVERYTHING YOU EVER WANTED TO KNOW ABOUT CABENUVA
BY DANIEL HIRSCH
For many, living with HIV has meant living with daily pills. However, the January 2021 FDA approval of Cabenuva radically changed antiretroviral HIV treatment.
Cabenuva is the first long-acting, injectable HIV medication. It is typically administered every eight weeks. However, there are instances where it must be provided every four weeks, depending on the treatment plan decided by the health care provider and the patient’s specific needs. The regimen involves two injections — one of Cabotegravir and one of Rilpivirine — given on the same day.
To understand the pros and cons of Cabenuva, I spoke with DAP Health Director of Specialty Programs Dr. Jason Halperin. As a longtime advocate for better and more accessible HIV care, Dr. Halperin considers himself a Cabenuva proponent.
Who is Cabenuva for?
It’s really for anyone living with HIV who is interested in injectable medication. There are a lot of patients who meet the criteria for Cabenuva. It’s much fewer who don’t. I would say to people living with HIV, “Don’t be afraid to ask your provider if you think injectables might be right for you.”
What makes an injectable drug preferable to an oral medication?
I’d first say that we are at such an amazing place in terms of HIV medications — they’re incredibly effective and welltolerated. Typically, one pill per day is all that most people living with HIV require. That said, though oral medication is welltolerated, I often hear patients complain about nausea. And you have no nausea at all from the injectable medication. Other than occasional reaction or soreness at the injection site, there are fewer side effects.
And you don’t have to worry about forgetting to take a daily pill, correct?
A missed pill here and there is never going to lead to resistance. The barrier to resistance for our newer medications is extremely high. But yes, you don’t need to worry about that at all with the injectable.
In fact, we have our first trial population where injectable outperformed oral medication. This was in a population that has struggled taking oral medication before — 50% struggling with substance use, almost 40% were unhoused. They were randomized to either start an injectable or continue with oral medication. Those who were randomized to the injectable did so much better that the study was stopped early because it was considered unethical to continue [with patients on oral medication].
I’ll often have a patient come in and say, “I’ve been missing medicine,” “I’ve lost a job,” “I’m struggling with methamphetamine use,” or “I’m having difficulty with housing.” Before this study, I would’ve said, “Let’s get you back on oral and get you stabilized.” I’m really going the other way now. I’m telling my patients, “If a lot is happening in your life, injectables might be the right decision for you today.”
Can anyone who wants it access Cabenuva? Does insurance cover it?
Our insurance system in California has been very supportive. It’s very rare that I cannot get approval from insurance companies for Cabenuva for my patients. However, we are seeing equity issues around the country. We’re seeing that higher-income patients — those more likely to be White and to self-identify as a gay man — being started on Cabenuva over other populations.
Besides having to get poked with a needle, are there downsides to Cabenuva?
The one frustrating thing for me with this medication is it was not approved for self-administration. It has to be administered within the clinic setting. Oral medication does allow for more flexibility.
NYE MUSTHIGHLIGHTS SEE A SLICE OF VENICE IN PALM SPRINGS
BY PAUL HUTNICK
Steve Balderson’s Love, Venezia delves into the nuances of intimacy and self-discovery in a world often dominated by superficiality and fleeting encounters. Starring Daniel Bateman as Michael and Alexander Ananasso as the Venician Casanova, Marco, the film is based on Balderson’s real-life experience in Venice, Italy, and is set where the actual events occurred. The character of Michael literally walks the same alleyways and past the same buildings that Balderson once did and the city becomes a metaphor for the passionate affair shared between the two men in that it, too, endures, despite challenges. Writer/director Steve Balderson explains more.
What do you hope Palm Springs audiences take away from Love, Venezia?
Steve Balderson: In Love, Venezia, I explore the themes of transcending judgment and discovering the capacity to find love in everyone we meet. These messages are critical, especially in today’s climate where division, blame, and condemnation are rampant, and in a hookup culture where the essence of love is often absent. It’s become a cultural norm to detach feelings from sexual encounters—a misguided notion that devalues the profound connections that define our humanity. This film challenges that norm by presenting sexuality as a deeply sensory experience that’s about connection, not just physicality.
As Marco states in the film, “With love, you will enhance the outcome of all that you do, no matter what.” This truth guides the narrative of Love, Venezia.
Steve Balderson: Exactly. Through a sensorial journey engaging all five senses, the film reveals the forgotten magic of true intimacy and connection, not just with others, but with oneself. My aim is to inspire viewers to let go of judgment, embrace love, and find meaning in every interaction.
The film is based on your erotic memoir Year of the Whore (Punk Hostage Press). What was the most challenging part of translating your story into moving pictures?
SB: Figuring out how to provide a sensorial experience for the viewer that hasn’t been done yet in cinema. Once I figured that out,
How did your personal experiences influence the storytelling and direction of this project?
SB: It helped in the decision-making process and writing it. I would base everything on what had happened. If he said this, or I did that, that’s what we created. When working in fiction, there’s always a choice between A or B, but when adapting something from a true story, if B happened, B is what we did. We didn’t pick A because A didn’t happen. So, I suppose it helped me remain truthful to the story in a deeper way.
The cinematography is epic. Did filming in Venice make it easier to capture such beauty?
SB: Oh goodness, yes. The city is totally breathtaking no matter which direction you look. And there’s something about the lighting there that’s magical.
the process of writing the script, and then filming, was effortless.
Is Love, Venezia your first LGBTQ film?
SB: Technically, yes! I’ve had gay characters in movies before, but never as the central and main storyline. I suppose I hadn’t found the right story until I lived it.
How did you approach the representation of LGBTQ characters in the film? Was it any different from how you approach heterosexual characters in love?
SB: I treated it exactly the same. The truest forms of love, intimacy, kindness, compassion, and sexuality are all about just being human. No matter what our orientations are. In this story the lovers are gay men, but I’ve seen heterosexual men and women equally impacted by the film as queer people have been. One woman said she couldn’t wait to go home and tell her husband about a few things to practice.
In what ways did you aim to differentiate your film from other LGBTQ romantic dramas?
SB: It wasn’t until afterwards that people said to me it’s a special LGBTQ story because it doesn’t have any trauma, violence, or drug use. I hadn’t thought about it that way because I was just telling my story. My co-producer told me that when she read the script the first time, she turned the page with an expectation that something bad was going to happen, and that when she reached the ending, she wept out of the beauty and with relief nothing bad had happened. We’re so programmed to think the worst, and when I was told that, it made me even more excited to make the movie.
What is the best way to explain the climax scene without giving too much away?
SB: There’s a hell of a… climax… in the climax (laughing).

LGBTQ+ Film-makers, and the stories they tell through the movies they make, empower our community, advance our efforts to gain equal rights, and often introduce us to a world that has heretofore never known us. Each year, Cinema Diverse invites filmmakers, writers, directors, producers, actors, film artists, film lovers, distributors and other industry professionals to join us in Palm Springs for an exciting celebration of the motion pictures that reflect, inform, enrich and often transform lives.
We believe LGBTQ+ films and LGBTQ+ film festivals are critical to our local community, and to the world community, because they tell stories that remind us of where we came from, who we are, and who we can be. They tell stories that not only inform and transform those within our community, but also have the power to change the lives and attitudes of people outside our community.

PERSPECTIVE THIRSTY? HOW DOES A TALL GLASS OF ICED TEA SOUND?
BY JILL LANGHAM
How are you all? Have you survived this crazy, hotter then hell summer? What a heat wave! I have only been out of Palm Springs 2 nights this whole season and have spent zero time outside due to the crappy air that is hovering over our valley. It saddens me and I feel like “the girl in the Bubble,” rather than the boy from the 1987’s movie.
I had to temporarily stop my Friday night Happy Hours at Toolshed waiting for the weather to cool down enough where we don’t need the misters. I believe that due to my mild emphysema, the humidity from the misters made me sick with a respiratory condition that’s affected me over the last 5 weeks. It’s not been pretty!
During my down time I was approached by Mike Smith, the owner of both Chicken Ranch and Toucan’s Tiki Bar, who asked if I’d be interested in hosting an indoor Tea Dance! I was a bit blown away because Toucan’s had been my go-to Gay Bar since March 2005, when my ex and I came to town for our second White Party.
Not to bore you with a repetitive story, but I feel the need to share this quick synopsis:
We were on our way to Toucan’s for the first time when I heard the most incredible music coming from the bar while still in the parking lot. It was so powerful that I began dancing towards the door as if I was in a trance much like a snake who’s being charmed by the music. (But, I ain’t no snake)
I danced up to the front door where I pushed the second set of doors inward, causing the air conditioning and air to blow into the crowd causing them to all to look in my direction. I didn’t really appreciate it at the time as I was so caught up in the dance that I made my way through the crowd to the center of the Dance floor, which was completely empty at the time.
The music being spun by DJ Mixie was fantastic and I was hypnotized. The crowd kept their eyes on me as I spun around the floor, smiling at everyone with what is now known as the, “Jill smile while doing the Jill Dance!”
To me, this was the night that the Dancing Queen of Palm Springs was born!
We moved to town a little less than a year later but flew in every other weekend to check on the progress of the house we were building here. Every time we were in town, we frequented Toucans. Most of the people assumed that we lived in town, but we did not.
However, on May 25, 2006 we permanently moved to Palm Springs and for the next six years we frequented Toucans every Friday and Saturday night and sometimes on Tuesdays as well.
To be asked 12 years later to host a Tea Dance there is beyond perfect. It is an honor.
You see back in those early days, Palm Springs was as they say, “the Sh*t!” The Gay Vibe was so strong that our city rocked. Everywhere you looked it was chock full of Gay Men, couples, singles, a few throuples, a few lesbian couples and a modicum of straight couples all of whom were super gay friendly and supportive.
The parties, the clubs, the restaurants, the stores and the gyms were full to the brim with gay men. Strange as it may sound it was my Nirvana.
My ex and I separated in 2012 leaving me on my own to really see what Palm Springs had to offer me. The rest they say is Herstory!
Sadly, Toucan’s ownership and focus changed and by 2014, I had discovered Arenas, Toolshed, the Barracks and found my new Nirvana. The last time I set foot in Toucan’s was in 2014.
Fast Forward to 2024, or the Post-COVID years and here we are.
Mike, and my Co-host, Ryan Sudick and I met and had many conversations about what we hoped to accomplish. We wanted to be sensitive to the other well-established events that take place on what is now known as Sunday Funday and chose hours that still allowed others to attend brunches, lunches, Drag Shows, Oscar’s, etc and also wanted to offer an option for people like me, who had respiratory issues or allergies and could benefit with an indoor place to dance and stay out of the high temperatures, heat, bad air, high dew points and humidity that now rules our fine Valley.
And, thus the Iced Tea Dance was born!
Our mission is to make you want to Dance and Move your bodies, especially after sitting around so much over the last 3 years! We take requests on line up to Friday afternoon so don’t be shy. Tell us what you want to hear, remembering that everyone has their own idea of what a Tea Dance is but all in all, it’s a safe space for you to express yourself. Just ask Madonna!
I look forward to seeing every one of you sooner or later.
Love you.
XOXO, Jill, your “Hostess with the Mostess,” DQ
TRAVEL SOUTH NEW JERSEY, MORE IDYLLIC THAN YOU THINK!
BY RICHARD G. JONES
As a New Yorker (well an honorary one), I often hear New Jersey getting a bad rap, even though they are our neighbor and that many people who live in New Jersey work and socialize in New York City. I’m guessing that the bad rap is due to the harsh portrayals of New Jerseyans in the media and on shows like Jersey Shore , The Sopranos and The Real Housewives of New Jersey. Trust me, and I say this with love, New Yorkers aren’t much better.
New York has been ahead of the game in the public relations arena, with years of movies and TV shows serving as advertisements for the city in addition to extensive tourism promotion for glamorous vacations upstate, or out on Long Island. And it’s high time New Jersey got the same treatment!
Let me say this, South New Jersey is snapping at the heels of New York! They have a wine region that receives better weather than upstate or Long Island, and wine makers that have a deep passion to offer the best wines possible equal to and in many cases surpassing the wines of the North Fork. I learned that they are also starting to win major international awards for their offerings, it’s a wine region that is not to be missed.
A mere stone’s throw from Philadelphia, and less than 2 hours away from New York City, the region has so much to offer. As a regular Long Island visitor who enjoys their farm stands, restaurants and of course the great wine of the North Fork, I didn’t know what
to expect on my first trip to South New Jersey with my husband and our friends.
As we got about an hour into New Jersey we were thrilled to see cute towns, farmland, and wonderful countryside. We all breathed that sigh of relief that comes from finding somewhere peaceful, but not too far away from the crazy chaotic city we love (but need to get away from every so often).
We started at the beautiful Auburn Road Winery. It is only 20 years old but looks and feels older and more established. We were hosted by the amazing Scott Donnini (the owner) who helped us understand the wines and why he had grouped them together as we partook of their Guided Premium Tasting Flight (wine flights are where you get to sample several wines - usually 3 or 4 at a time). We had very generous small pours of four exceptional wines, the Barrell Reserve Chardonnay 2022, a Dry Rosé, their 2020 Eidolon and the 2019 Guilia (named after Scott’s wife Julianne, the co-owner and the creative force at Auburn Road). The theme of the flight was different types of wine blending, be it different types of grapes, barrels or the same type of grape from different parts of the vineyard. The four of us were all totally captivated. The wine was exceptionally goodsome of the best we’ve tasted, and we’ve tasted quite a bit of wine!
Auburn Road also has a great wood fire pizza oven and with three of our group having Italian heritage, we opted for one
limoncello and one pepperoni pizza. Who knew these would both be so good?! The pizza connoisseur amongst us (the straight guy) was not sure at first about the limoncello (white pizza, with lemon and lime zest with honey drizzle) but declared it a win and said he’d happily order it again, and I couldn’t agree more.
After finishing our wine and pizza, Scott ended our wine tour with something unexpected, a lavender vermouth. I was not aware vermouth came from grapes, and well, now I know. We declared Auburn Road not only a winery but a “Vermouthery”. It’s not a real word but we all decided that for Auburn Road and Scott we’d make an exception. The vermouth tasted wonderful, neat on its own and we are excited to mix into our martinis the next time we indulge.
As we left Auburn Road, we took a moment to look at Cowtown Rodeo, the “oldest weekly professional rodeo in the United States.” Cowtown Rodeo was – and is – known nationwide due to live national TV exposure in 1958 & 1959 and syndicated exposure nationwide in 1969 & 1970. We didn’t see any competition since it was just before the season was about to start, but it was still busy with a market, and western store! So, if you need a fix of cowboy culture, it’s right here in South Jersey (Season starts July 6th).
Our next stop was the refreshing Farmers and Bankers Brewery in the very cute town of Woodstown. The day we visited Rebecca and Michael Melniczuk were celebrating their 2-year anniversary
as owners. As an antique enthusiast, Michael was captivated by the architecture and history of the First National Bank building which has been an iconic landmark and focal point of downtown Woodstown for 130 years. After being vacant for 12 years, in August 2021, Michael and Rebecca purchased the building and together, with support from family, friends, and the community, they started on a 10-month journey to renovate the space and create Farmers & Bankers Brewing. Rebecca welcomed us on a very busy day but made sure we had a great beer, and a warm welcome. It was not hard to see the love the place has from locals, that kept it busy all afternoon. Do not miss this cool location and sample a beer or two!
After that we took a little look around the Mullica Hill Historic District. It featured a very nice high street, with beautiful houses and stores, as well as the Ellis Shivers House, from 1771. If you love antiques, don’t miss “The Sign of St. George”. Be sure to check out Mademoiselle Macaron French Bakery and Tea Room which is right across the road. We ended our tour of the town with a trip to the Farm House Design Store which had beautiful contemporary household gifts and candles (they also had amazing customer service).
Since the particular day we were visiting had temperatures in the upper 90’s, we headed back to the car for some relief in the air conditioning and headed onwards to the last winery of the day - the beautiful William Heritage Winery (Mullica Hill Tasting Room), owned and operated by Bill & Penni Heritage with help from their sons –

Richard, Bryan & Erik. The family has been farming in Mullica Hill, New Jersey for six generations. We were warmly welcomed into their newly renovated tasting room, which is stunning, and opted for wine flights, as we were still in the mood to sample as many different new wines as possible. We opted for a flight of 5 wines, that started with the Pet Nat Rosé 2023, A Grenache Syrah Rosé, the 2023 Reserve Sauvignon Blanc, the 2023 Stainless Steel Red, and finished with the 2021 Reserve Five Gen, all delivered in a stunning spiral glass holder. Again, all the wines were stunning, my favorite was the Pet Nat Rose, a more rustic version of champagne, perfect for a hot summer day! As we had already eaten lunch, we opted for a cheese box to share, and at $20 this cheese box would have been perfect for two people to have lunch, but instead four of us for snacks. It was a lot of bang for your buck. We will be back!
That night we checked in to the Courtyard Glassboro Rowan University Hotel, which had many amenities including a pool, and an onsite Starbucks for that coffee fix. Many restaurants are within walking distance, which meant it was not far for our dinner reservation that night.
We headed to the bustling La Scala Fire which featured a wonderful traditional Italian menu in a contemporary setting. Service was impeccable, and food portions were amazingly generous. It truly felt like you were having dinner with your Grandma/Nonna making sure you had heaps of helpings! We did not go hungry. The desserts were wonderful, and we can’t recommend this place enough.
The next day we headed out for coffee in the gay owned coffee shop, Grooveground which is a contemporary coffee bar and cafe located in the heart of Downtown Collingswood. Opened in 2002, and serving delicious La Colombe coffee, as well as teas, salads, paninis, fresh baked goods, and desserts. We certainly had Great coffee, as well as a pastry each, and the staff were wonderful. They also sell cool items like vintage vinyl, pride merch and other gifts. Its location is right next to the local Pride street crossing too! We had to take a pic! Collingswood has a great selection of very cool stores, and restaurants too.
With two horror nerds in our crowd, we had to head to Haddonfield, (just a few mins down the street from Collingswood) which is the name of the fictional town in the original Halloween movie starring Jamie Lee Curtis. The movie was made in California and in the story, Haddonfield is in Illinois, but this Haddonfield in New Jersey was where one of the movie’s creators, Debra Hill, grew up, so it has quite the horror movie connection for genre fans.
Besides the Halloween connection, Haddonfield is not to be missed! It was here in Haddonfield where they discovered the first complete dinosaur skeletons in America, and a striking statue proudly
TRAVEL
declares it right on the high street. Also, there was not one, but three British shops here - a Fish and Chip Shop, a beautiful China shop called the Queens Carriage, and the English Gardner Gift Shop, full of amazing gifts, Christmas decorations and shelf after shelf of English groceries that would be enough to stock a small English village shop. It was not just candy but tinned foods, jams, cookies and even bread and sausages, a real taste of home for a Brit such as me, William Heritage has a wine bar in town and the Inkwood Bookshop had a great pride themed window display. The town had a real bustle, and I didn’t see one chain store. It felt so welcoming.
Next, we headed to the last stop of the trip, the Sharrott Winery which was about 30 mins from Haddonfield. We were greeted expertly by the staff, and we were seated next to huge picture windows that overlooked the vineyards (again at over 90 degrees it was too hot to sit outside). The winery had the best of both worlds, cool air and the vineyards right out in front of us. We had the opportunity to meet with the founders of Sharrott Winery Larry & Eileen, who told us the history. Larry is a former computer engineer and Eileen, a former teacher. They bought some land in the area about 20 years ago and set about creating an expertly designed winery.
We tasted many of their wines, and each of us created a bespoke wine flight from there extensive list, I opted for the Sparkling Rosé (whimsical & Romantic) which was exceptionally refreshing, the Pinot Grigio (Graceful & Fruit Forward) which was very subtle, and the unoaked Chardonnay (Unique & Sharp) last, but by no means least. For lunch we shared the burrata caprese, and I had the most excellent individual frittata. Our friend Rosa had the chicken and waffle, my husband John had the crab cakes, and Corey had the Pork Egg Roll and Cheese sandwich, which was NOT small. All the dishes were prepared by the bustling kitchen that is in full view of the patrons!
I was lucky enough to chat about wines with Mr. Sharrott, who is an expert, of course, and he informed me that a senior wine sommelier from Italy had recently visited and declared his love for the wine at Sharrott’s, so we were in great company. As a special treat we were offered a taste of the Wicked Port, which was a perfect end to a perfect weekend.
On the ride home (thanks Corey!) we all declared a newfound love of South New Jersey. The region is beautiful, and the food and drink are equal if not better in some cases than other wine regions of the northeast. But don’t take my word for it, go see for yourself! Within striking distance of Philadelphia and New York, it’s an easy day or weekend trip. You won’t be sorry!

MUSIC JADE RELEASES “ANGEL OF MY DREAMS” (THE BLESSED MADONNA REMIX)
BY MARTHA TANG
Jade, AKA Jade Thirlwall of multi-platinum selling, BRIT Award winning pop phenomenon Little Mix, releases a new remix of her highly anticipated debut solo single, “Angel of My Dreams” from The Blessed Madonna.
“What I’m going for is a relentless, huge pop punch to the face. I want people to be like ‘oh my god, I didn’t expect that’ – but then want to listen to it again.”
Jade co-wrote “Angel of My Dreams” in LA alongside Steph Jones (Sabrina Carpenter’s Espresso), Pablo Bowman (Calvin Harris’ Miracle) and producer Mike Sabath (RAYE). The track is a frenetically shapeshifting, gloriously OTT banger that explores her love/hate relationship with a pop industry she’s been at the heart of since 2011.
“I didn’t want to do a safe first single, that was really important to me,” Jade states. “I’m setting the tone of who I am as an artist on my own. I want people to hear it and be like ‘what the fuck is that song?’. My worst nightmare is for someone to hear my song and go ‘that’s nice’.”
The lyrical themes are brought to life via an eye-popping video that takes the song’s playful storytelling and blows it up into big neon letters. Directed by Aube Perrie (Harry Styles, Megan Thee Stallion), and filmed over four days (“the budget was budgeting” laughs Jade), it’s a visual feast, inspired by the Fifth Element, Showgirls and Black Swan, that stars various versions of Jade all scrapping for the spotlight.
“There’s 11 looks in the video! The concept is sort of rags to riches It was emotional actually because for one bit I’m busking and walking past a Sainsbury’s Local. When I was 16, I would stand outside my local Sainsbury’s and sing Christmas songs.”
It’s been a long, carefully chosen path to get to “Angel of My Dreams.” When Little Mix announced their hiatus in 2022, JADE started to set her solo career in motion across multiple studio sessions with collaborators including MNEK, Cirkut, Lostboy, RAYE, Lauren Aquilina
and Dave Hamelin alongside Mike, Steph and Pablo. ‘Angel of My Dreams’ immediately jumped out as the lead single. Built around a cheeky, knowing sample of Sandie Shaw’s 1967 hit “Puppet on a String,” lyrically Jade wanted to reflect on her time in an industry that has brought her both unimaginable highs and deep lows.
“It’s about how obsessed I am with the industry – so there are lyrics like “love when you call me a star” – but also there’s the dark side that comes with that. It’s not as glam as it seems.” The sample, which Jade had wanted to use in a song for years, was chosen very specifically. “In the beginning of our career you do think you are this puppet, but at the same time it isn’t true – we wrote a lot of our songs, and we were behind a lot of what we put out there. I resented that as a statement. So, it felt natural to take that and show that it can be true and untrue at the same time.”
The track is Jade delivering Big Pop Girl Energy. It is, as she says, doing the most; it’s OTT, it’s ridiculous and it’s gloriously WTF.
“This dawn of pop girls giving people everything is so exciting. It couldn’t be better timing for my music. I’m so proud of it and I can say that with chest. The fans have waited long enough so now we just want to give it to them.”
REVIVAL & KATHY BROWN RELEASE “DANCE TO THE MUSIC”
BY ILICH MEJIA
Record label and artist collective Revival have released “Dance To The Music,” their latest single and music video featuring vocalist Kathy Brown. The song is a cover of the 1967 song by Sly & The Family Stone, known for its innovative blend of funk, soul, rock and psychedelia. Written by the band’s leader Sly Stone, the song was crafted to be a hit on both pop and R&B charts. Like on the original, Revival and Kathy Brown’s reimagined version of the song uses simple, repetitive lyrics to emphasize the joy of dancing together.
Popular for their dance-infused covers of iconic, classic songs –their most recent being a cover of George Michael’s 1990 hit single “Freedom” – Revival has also released a music video for “Dance To The Music.” In the video, Revival and Kathy Brown perform their rendition of the feel-good song to an excited crowd seen dancing the night away. Revival pleads audiences to “crank it up loud and
let Kathy Brown’s distinctly powerful vocals help you turn wherever you are into a dance floor and whatever you’re going through into a celebration.”
About their decision to reinterpret the classic song for their eighth single, Revival shares, “The clever synthesis in the original version of a pop-friendly sound with psychedelic rock, funk and Motown was definitely something that drew us to this particular record, but it was the song’s simple yet effective lyrics, with its repeated cry for the world to get on up and dance to the music, that really sealed the deal. These past few years have brought us challenges and changes that for many have seemed insurmountable and even unbearable. Music reminds us to dance, even though those moments when we least feel like it, while dancing reconnects us with the simple joy of being alive.”
