INTERIOR MOTIVES A CONVERSATION WITH DESIGNER DANN FOLEY BY CHRIS ASTRALA 6 THESTANDARDPS.COM

COVER

He has been featured in many national magazines. His namesake brand, Dann Foley Lifestyle includes licensed products in almost every category of the home industry. He is known as a go-to designer personality for television with multiple credits including, NBC’s American Dream Builders with Nate Berkus and as the only male member of Showtimes acclaimed, The Real L Word. We recently had the opportunity to chat with long time contributing writer for The Standard Magazine, Dann Foley about his career and life long passion with interior design, here is a glimpse into his world.

COVER

When was that light bulb moment when you knew you wanted to be an interior designer? For me, becoming a designer was always a natural choice. My mother worked with an interior designer in the home I grew up in and I was always fascinated with the process of creating beauty. In fact, my parents love to tell the story that they would be scared to go out to dinner because they would often come home to find I had rearranged the furniture. Who or what are your biggest influences? In my early years I was greatly influenced by my mother’s interior designer and the fact that I would be allowed to take off from school to go to the design center with them and explore the showrooms full of inspirations. But, my biggest influence from the start were classic films of Hollywood’s Golden Era. The films of the 30s, 40s & 50s had amazing production. Designers like Edwin B. Willis at MGM influence my designs and style even today. If you can design any celebrity home, living or no longer with us, who would it be and why? The dream would be Walt Disney! His creativity, wonder and master of the detail, would be a pleasure to collaborate with on any project.

COVER

Today it would have to be George and Amal Clooney. There sense of personal style both as a couple and individuals, plus their global perspective would be an amazing creative experience. Your new book, It’s All In The Mix, Design Ideas for Living Well; will be available in January. Can you tell us a bit about it? My new book is a design journey through my more than 30 years as a designer. It is a beautiful hardback coffee table book you will be proud to display and at the same time, a go-to for helpful advice, tips, tricks in design culled from my vast experience with clients and their homes. The projects we have featured in the book show a wide variety of design styles. I have never been a designer to sell one style to everyone, every project and every client are unique. Think of it as a Master Class in doing it yourself. With a foreward by my friend and design icon Thom Felicia of Queer Eye For The Straight Guy, only made the book even more special to me. Palm Springs is the hub for all things Mid-Century, what is your take on that style?

10 THESTANDARDPS.COM

Mid-Century design is incredible. The movement was one of the great breaks in approach to design and living. It encompassed not just furnishings and architecture but, it was/is a lifestyle of forward thinking design. My approach to Mid-Century design is to avoid the cliché moments and choices and create something that is more personal to the client. The process is an ode to the period but, with all the modern amenities, details and comfort of today. Personality and warmth are always part of the equation, no matter the design style. A few years back you were on a home makeover show, would you ever consider doing that again and if so, what would be the concept? I have had some amazing television experiences and American Dream Builders for NBC was unique in that it was the first home design show on a major network in primetime. Since then and because of that show, I have been offered others. What I know now is that I would definitely do another show but, only on my terms. Today’s design shows are all cut from the same cloth, with the same style repeated over and over and over. Often times the hosts are not acutally designers and

that is disappointing to me. Experience is everything and my show would be a full lifestyle program where we integreate all parts of a clients life into their home. It is what we do for our clients every day and it is a lot more interesting and inspiring. The design style would never be set, with each week being a different client with a different perspective and style… And, It would have to include a lot of humor! ABOUT DANN FOLEY Designer, author, columnist, you certainly have your hands full. What do you do to unwind? Well, first let me add, product designer to that list! LOL. The brand, Dann Foley Lifestyle has more than 600 SKU’s of products in 9 categories of the home industry. I spend a great deal of time every day on product design and travel a great deal representing those designs at trade shows both here and abroad. When I do get time off, I head straight for Europe. Paris is my heart and I go every year to be recharged, inspired and energized for the next challenge. I base myself in Paris and then travel out to other parts of Europe, often Italy and England. I can unwind, relax, and melt into the streets. For me travel and inspiration go hand in hand. I immerse myself in the city/town, culture and people of where I am at any given moment. The experience of discovery in the unknown or exotic is intoxicating to me. Final question, what words of wisdom can you give to all those DIY designers out there? That is a simple answer, buy my book! LOL Seriously though, I stress to clients every day that you cannot go wrong by choosing what you love. Forget about what you think you should have or, what others tell you you should want. I don’t believe in theme decorating. Themes are for children’s parties. Buy what inspires and excites, you can never go wrong following your heart.

Dann’s award-winning designs are seen across the U.S., Canada and parts of Europe, the Middle East and Asia. What started as an extra credit project in his senior year of design school has turned into a Lifestyle Design Firm with a global reach. Known for his passion and enthusiasm for design, his infectious laughter and sense of humor, Dann believes that every client should “enjoy the process”. He says, “every project is about fulfilling the client’s desires but, in a form they dreamed possible.” His brand, Dann Foley Lifestyle was the largest product launch for an interior designer brand ever and coincided with the premier of the NBC primetime show, American Dream Builders. Also featured on Showtime’s The Real L Word. Dann’s latest launch is his first fulllifestyle licensing program with Stylecraft that already includes more than 600 SKU’s of lighting, art, mirror, accessories, pillows, upholstery, casegoods & occasional furniture. Experience, global travel, public speaking, writing and design have made Dann into a “Living Well” expert and sought after host and emcee within our industry, as well as television. Dann says, “I teach people to live better lives, every day.” Dann’s new book will available on Amazon. www.dannfoleylifestyle.com

FEBRUARY 2023 Modernism Visionaries By Randall Cardozi For anyone who’s interested in Mid Century Modern style and design, all these mid-century modern architects are worth getting acquainted with. Of course, their work wasn’t limited to single-family homes; they also designed apartment buildings, office buildings, civic buildings, retail centers, museums, places of worship, and more. Albert Frey Albert Frey belonged to a generation that believed in a political role for modern architecture, that of social liberation through machinemade, egalitarian and affordable designs. His chosen materials were aluminum, glass, cables and, eventually, the very boulders and sands of the desert where he settled. In a career that spanned more than 65 years, Mr. Frey remained true to the principle that architecture should make the most of the least. https://e.issuu.com/embed.html?d=thestandard_vol11_issue2&u=thestandardmagazine

FEATURE MARCH 2023 Up Close with Darren Criss By Daniel Vaillancourt Darren Criss — the 36-year-old “Glee” alum who won an Emmy, a Golden Globe, and a Screen Actors Guild Award for playing gay serial killer Andrew Cunanan in Ryan Murphy’s “The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story” — may be making his professional desert debut when he headlines the 2023 The Chase for DAP Health, but he’s no stranger to the Coachella Valley. Since he reports he has a “significant amount of family in the Palm Desert,” he’s somewhat of a regular. “I’ve got all my favorite spots, let’s put it that way.” He even made it to fellow performer Harry Styles’ last North American “Love On Tour” stop (and impromptu birthday bash) on February 1 at the new Acrisure Arena. I chatted with Criss over Zoom while he was in Los Angeles to talk about what we can expect at his show, his love of all things show biz, and his ties to queer audiences. Tell me a bit about the show you’ll be presenting at The Chase. When I can play events like this, which are very fun — I know The Chase is very big and I’m very thrilled to be there — I’m the court jester. I’m just making sure I’m servicing people having a good time. So, I tend to stray away from deep cuts [in favor of] any smattering of things that people would be familiar with from, Broadway or the stuff I did on “Glee” or just covers in general that are fun to play and that kind of seem appropriate for the vibe. I’m notorious about not coming up with a set list until a few days before. I’ll have a band [that night], so I must be a little more fastidious with the organizing of that. https://e.issuu.com/embed.html?d=thestandard_vol11_issue3&u=thestandardmagazine

From gorgeous beach destinations to dynamic urban experiences, LGBTQ travelers are always looking for that next “new” place to visit. https://e.issuu.com/embed.html?d=thestandard_vol11_issue4&u=thestandardmagazine

MAY 2023 Drag is Not a Crime! By Chris Astrala Say it again; DRAG IS NOT A CRIME ! Drag is an art form built on self-expression and artistic performance. Drag is also powerful tool for political protest, that uplifts the LGBTQ+ community in the face of discrimination and oppression. Once a fringe art form, drag has become an increasingly visible and indispensable vertical of pop culture—influencing everything from beauty techniques to everyday vocabulary (slay, tea, shade, gagging...etc.). Drag Race marked the dawn of a new era in drag history, welcoming it into the mainstream—but this social progress is exactly what the new legislation is designed to counteract. The more than 20 bills nationwide are a pushback against modern drag, which has grown from an underground performance art using costumes and makeup to play with gender norms, which flourished in lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender venues, to a mainstream entertainment, helped in part again by the popularity of the televised pageant show “RuPaul’s Drag Race. https://e.issuu.com/embed.html?d=thestandard_vol11_issue5&u=thestandardmagazine

JUNE 2023 Eurovision: One of the Biggest Nights in Music on the LGBT+ Calendar By Travis Espinoza Eurovision has a long and proud history of supporting queer artists and championing LGBT+ rights. There have been countless key moments that waved the flag for LGBT+ representation. In 1998 Dana International entered the competition as the first trans performer - she went onto win for Israel, becoming the first trans Eurovision winner. The contest has had several out LGBT+ winners since then. Another key moment came in 2014 when Conchita (a gay drag queen) brought her gender non-conforming drag to the masses. Her ‘Rise Like a Phoenix’ performance was described in the press as “the most genderqueer yet”. Of course, none of these performers escaped the inevitable bigotry aimed at LGBT+ people - there were calls for Eurovisions boycotts from some, and offensive remarks made by certain country’s broadcasts of the contest. But the message remained clear, as Conchita declared upon being awarded the Eurovision trophy: “We are unity, and we are unstoppable”. https://e.issuu.com/embed.html?d=thestandard_vol11_issue6&u=thestandardmagazine

FEATURE JULY 2023 The State of LGBTQ Health & Wellness By Damian Bayles Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex, and asexual (LGBTQIA) people are members of every community. They are diverse, come from all walks of life, include people of all races and ethnicities, all ages, all socioeconomic statuses, and from all parts of the country. Even with the positive steps that have been taken over recent decades, LGBTQIA people continue to face significant barriers to accessing healthcare services including discrimination from insurers and medical providers, as well as the delays or denials of care. The healthcare needs of LGBTQIA people are sometimes unique and often overlooked, contributing to health disparities experienced by vulnerable populations. https://e.issuu.com/embed.html?d=thestandard_vol11_issue7&u=thestandardmagazine

AUGUST 2023 Kevin Maxen Comes Out as a Proud Gay Man By Trevor Garrison Kevin Maxen becomes the first male coach in US men’s pro sports to come out as gay publicly. “I don’t want to feel like I have to think about it anymore. I don’t want to feel like I have to lie about who I am seeing, or why I am living with someone else. I want to be vocal in support of people living how they want to live, but I also want to just live and not feel fear about how people will react.” He also revealed that he has been in a two-and-a-half-year relationship with his boyfriend Nick. He said he found the courage to come out from the support of his family and friends. “It wasn’t until recently – and with the immense love and support of my family, my friends, colleagues and peers, and the courage and sacrifice from my partner – that I realized I have the right and responsibility to love and be loved, and that maybe sharing this will hopefully give someone else the strength to accept their own life and take control of their own story.” https://e.issuu.com/embed.html?d=thestandard_vol11_issue8&u=thestandardmagazine

SEPTEMBER 2023 | VOLUME 11 ISSUE 9 | THESTANDARDPS.COM | @THESTANDARDPS

Twenty twenty-three is shaping up to be a Very Queer Year. Sundance was very gay, between the new Ira Sachs film, and a documentary about the Indigo Girls, and Anne Hathaway in a lesbian drama. The talk of Cannes was Pedro Almodóvar’s queer Western, Strange Way of Life, starring Pedro Pascal and Ethan Hawke. Summer movie season is shaping up to be very fruity, with R-rated comedies like Bottoms and Joy Ride, romantic comedies like Red, White & Royal Blue, and even an animated movie too, in Netflix’s Nimona. And don’t get us started on Barbie. Movies by, about and for the community don’t happen on their own — queerness on-screen is still hard-won — and so we have LGBTQ+ writers, directors, producers, and stars, many of whom wear multiple hats by necessity, to thank for contributing to and continuing to shape the state of queer cinema. https://e.issuu.com/embed.html?d=thestandard_vol11_issue9&u=thestandardmagazine

Taika Waititi has cast Kaimana, a fa’afafine or non-binary person in his upcoming sports film “Next Goal Wins,” based on a 2014 documentary, stars Michael Fassbender and Elisabeth Moss. It tells the true story of the American Samoan soccer team’s fight to redeem itself after having the biggest losing streak in international soccer. Kaimana, who uses one name, will portray Jaiyah Saelua, the first non-binary player to compete in a men’s FIFA World Cup qualifier. Kaimana, who is making their acting debut in the film, identifies as fa’afafine, a person who does not identify as male or female. It is considered a third gender in Samoan culture and often referred to as transgender or non-binary. Waititi tells Variety that he never thought of considering cisgender actors for the role. “It was vital,” he said. “There was no way we would have approached it in any other way.” He explained that New Zealand and Polynesia’s fa’afafine community is “very respected.” “It’s an accepted part of the culture and of life,” he said. “It’s very inclusive.” https://e.issuu.com/embed.html?d=thestandard_vol11_issue10&u=thestandardmagazine

FEATURE NOVEMBER 2023 The Trans Cross Drag Relations By Jacquelyn James The transgender community, cross dressers, and drag performers are all related in the sense that they involve individuals who may explore and express gender identities and presentations that differ from societal expectations. However, it’s important to note that these are distinct groups with their own unique experiences. The transgender community consists of individuals whose gender identity differs from the sex they were assigned at birth. They may undergo a social transition, medical interventions, or both to align their gender identity with their outward appearance. This is a long and difficult process to complete the individual journey as to where they themself desire to be. Gender Dysphoria is the medical term used for those individuals who suffer from the feeling of not being in the correct body. https://e.issuu.com/embed.html?d=thestandard_vol11_issue11&u=thestandardmagazine

HOLIDAYENTERTAINING HOLIDAY ENTERTAINING FOR GENERATIONS XYZ: SHOWCASING CULINARY PROWESS AND DIY CHARM BY CHEF ANDRE CARTHEN Creating Memorable and Unique Holiday Gatherings Holiday entertaining is an art that has been passed down through generations, with each era adding its own unique flair. It is a time to gather friends and family, make lasting memories, and showcase culinary prowess and DIY charm. In this article, we will explore how different generations, particularly the XYZ generation, approach holiday entertaining, emphasizing budget-consciousness, sustainability, and personal expression. HOLIDAY ENTERTAINING: A TIME TO SHOW OFF Entertaining is all about making guests feel at home in your home, creating an inviting atmosphere that leaves a lasting impression. While the ultimate goal is for guests to feel at home in your home, it’s equally important not to make them too comfortable so that they never want to leave. Holiday entertaining offers the perfect opportunity to show off your hosting skills, culinary talents, and creativity. SHIFTING BRAND LOYALTY: XYZ GENERATIONS PRIORITIZING SUSTAINABILITY While previous generations, like the baby boomers and Generation X, may have been more concerned about brand loyalty, the XYZ generations are embracing intentional lifestyle decisions. These younger generations are moving away from traditional brand loyalty and opting for private label products that offer cost savings and prioritize sustainability. This shift is reflected in their choices when selecting ingredients and products for holiday entertaining. NOSTALGIC CULINARY FAVORITES OF THE PAST Looking back at holiday entertaining in the past, we can uncover a range of culinary favorites that were once pridefully served. In the 50s and 60s, menus comprised homemade family favorites like Pineapple Upside-Down Cake, Ambrosia, Deviled Eggs, and Swedish Meatballs. These dishes showcased the pride and tradition associated with family recipes, passed down from generation to generation. THE CHANGING FLAVORS OF THE 70S AND 80S As we moved into the 70s, the culinary landscape of holiday entertaining began to change. Handheld items like Mini Quiches, Cheeseballs, and Smoked Sausages took center stage, while Cheese Fondue and Chocolate Fondue became the taste de jour. Then the 80s

22 THESTANDARDPS.COM

arrived, bringing with it a burst of bold flavors. Blush Wines, Spinach and Artichoke Dip served in a Bread Bowl, Baby Potatoes with Sour Cream & Caviar, Baked Brie with Honey and Walnuts, Bruschetta, and lamb lollipops were among the coveted party foods of the time. TODAY’S RELAXED AND DIY HOSTING DUTIES In the present day, hosting duties have become less formal and much more relaxed, allowing individuals to highlight their DIY personalities. It’s all about adding charm and personal touches to create a memorable experience for guests. Impress your visitors with a thoughtfully curated Charcuterie Board, with items tastefully arranged to please the eye and the palate. Add a pop of seasonal color with a bouquet of Mozzarella Tomato Basil Skewers. Health-conscious options are also a priority, with vegetarian and vegan choices taking center stage. Elevate the classic Crudité Platter by offering a variety of flavored hummus dips, and for an added touch of elegance, serve a Fig & Prosciutto Wrap or Dates Wrapped in Bacon. PLEASING DIVERSE DIETARY PREFERENCES Catering to diverse dietary preferences can be challenging, but with a little creativity, it is possible to please everyone. When setting a table or buffet, remember the mantra: Tall, Fat, Short, Matt. This mantra serves as a reminder to offer options for all dietary needs, from meat to vegetarian, dairy to non-dairy, alcohol to non-alcohol, and gluten to non-gluten. By providing a wide range of choices, you can ensure that all guests can enjoy the holiday feast without any dietary restrictions. EMBRACE THE UNIQUE TRADITIONS OF EACH GENERATION Holiday entertaining is a time-honored tradition that evolves with each passing generation. The XYZ generations embrace their own unique approach, prioritizing sustainability, cost-consciousness, and personal expression. As you plan your next holiday gathering, channel your inner culinary artist and DIY enthusiast. Show off your hosting skills and create lasting memories that will be cherished for generations to come.

BOOK REVIEW ALWAYS OVERBOOKED BY TERRI SCHLICHENMEYER

For every gray hair you pluck out, two more grow back. That’s a myth, of course, but you must wonder. Gray hair, brown spots on the backs of hands, knee joints that can be heard across the room, how did this happen? Getting old is not for the faint of heart but in the new book “The Old Gays Guide to the Good Life,” by The Old Gays of Tik Tok, there is an alternative... When eighty-something Robert was about to lose his beautiful Victorian home, he was deeply saddened. Doing the maintenance for it was impossible, but so was the thought of moving. As it turns out, though, he didn’t have to move he was able to save his home at the last minute, but he knew he needed creativity to stay long-term. And so, he ran an ad on Craigslist that read like this: “Roommate/ Hippie wanted: Must be nudist, LGBTQ+ and 420 lifestyle friendly.” Bodybuilder Mick, age sixty-something, was the first to answer the ad, followed by his friend, Bill and then Jessay, both over seventy years old. Thirty-something John moved in for a while, and John’s boyfriend, Ryan, was a constant presence. There was some gettingused-to involved, but it was obvious that things would work out among them. And one night, something clicked, for real. There was weed involved, and a conversation about conversation; the younger men recorded a hilarious video of the older men and posted it on Tik Tok. They were “immediately a hit,” more videos were released, the Old Gays made television appearances, and their audiences love them. Here, they offer advice for those fans. Support one another always, and always be yourself. Know how to throw a good party and how to be a good guest. Listen to your elders; you are where you are because of them. Be safe and know your history. Love wholly. Take care of your body and mind. Keep your eyes open for celebrities. And “please do not give up hope...” Though it may sound impossible, “The Old Gays Guide to the Good Life” really is a book for an audience that spans decades. You can hand it to your eighteen-year-old, he can share it with an eightyfive-year-old, and both will get something out of it. And yet, readers will notice that not all is smooth. There’s a good bit of confusion in the preface; we’re not well-introduced to the people involved before everyone’s tossed into the mix. An introduction comes later, but that’s not always enough. What you’ll read is (mostly) funny and helpful and inspirational, but all of that can feel forced sometimes. It’s raunchy (beware!) but also often poignant and heartbreaking.

Take that as a warning: “The Old Gays Guide to the Good Life” is a great look at LGBTQ history by those who’ve been there and it’s authentic, approachable, and honest – but honestly explicit. Still, what you get on Tik Tok is what you get here and if you’re a fan, you’ll love that, gray hair or not. “The Old Gays Guide to the Good Life” by The Old Gays of Tik Tok / c.2023, Harper Wave $32.00 / 256 pages

PSP FOCUS >> LADY BUNNY CELEBRATES A VERY BLUE X-MAS BY CHARLIE ROCAFORT

The Infamous Drag Icon Brings Her Holiday Show to Palm Springs! It simply isn’t Christmas until you’ve heard Lady Bunny put her raunchy, politically-incorrect spin on your favorite holiday carol. The infamous drag icon performs two hilarious shows only of Lady Bunny: A Very Blue X-Mas at Oscars (125 E Tahquitz Canyon Way #108) in Palm Springs on Thursday, Dec 21 at 7:00pm and 9:30pm. In Lady Bunny A Very Blue X-Mas, everyone’s favorite holiday ham gives her trademark potty-mouthed parody treatment to over thirty Christmas classics. Bunny’s versions are intended to disgust audiences while they are simultaneously howling with laughter. Songs include “Rudolpho the Uncut Reindeer,” and “I Saw Daddy Fisting Santa Claus.” Produced by Chris Isaacson Presents, the show features a sleigh full of truly disgusting jokes as well as a naughty holiday tribute to Laugh-In, and Bunny’s dishy version of “Twas the Night Before Xmas” that zings popular queens from the RuPaul’s Drag Race franchise. Come see why the New York Times calls Lady Bunny “the city’s reigning drag queen” and Vogue says she “represents the heart of what drag is all about.” The Internationally known drag icon, comedian, recording artist and jet-set DJ is as famous for her big-banged bouffant and her notoriously naughty wit as for her ability to get a dance floor jumping. A Manhattan gal since the early 80s, Lady Bunny shares Atlanta roots with fellow drag star and former roommate, RuPaul, and is most famous for co-founding and emceeing Wigstock, the annual New York City Labor Day outdoor drag festival that ran for nearly twenty years. She tours constantly, taking her bodaciously bawdy brand of humor to audiences all over the world. She has shared the stage and screen with many of her idols including Patti Labelle, Joan Rivers, Bea Arthur, Charo, Elvira, Lynda Carter, Chaka Khan, Grace Jones, Loleatta Holloway, Jocelyn Brown, Martha Wash, Margaret Cho. She opened for Christina Aguilera at Radio City Music Hall, who later tweeted, “Upstaged at my own show! #Diva.” Lady Bunny’s comic genius has also been featured in films and television, most recently in Wig, the HBO Wigstock documentary made with Neil Patrick Harris, and the feature film, Hurricane Bianca: From Russia with Hate. She was the “Dean of Drag” on three seasons of RuPaul’s Drag U, has been roasted by Joan Rivers, roasted Pam

Anderson on The Comedy Central Roast of Pamela Anderson, and emceed the LGBT prom in one of the most popular episodes of Sex and the City. Tickets for LADY BUNNY: A VERY BLUE X-MAS are $55.95$79.95 and can be purchased online at OscarsPalmSprings.com. 18+ only. Shows are outside with limited heaters. Please dress accordingly. PERSPECTIVE CAN YOU HEAR ME NOW? BY JILL LANGHAM

I hope you have all had a wonderful November, from Pride, to Veteran’s Day as well as Thanksgiving. Believe it or not, Christmas is just a few weeks away where we will be forging our way into 2024, just one year away from the first quarter of the 21st Century! It’s rather mind boggling to say the least! Where does the time go? Five days before Pride, I returned from my 14th Atlantis cruise. I met and connected with a large number of new friends as well as cemented some older relationships through intimate dinners, lunches and poolside chats. I always interact with a ton of people at the dance parties and this year was no different. Well, except, it was for many reasons. The music at all the venues, inside, outside and in the clubs caused my Apple Watch to alert me each time that the decibel levels were damaging my ears. Now, I don’t know about you, but I know very few people over the age of 50 or even younger, who don’t suffer from some sort of hearing loss. My own father denied his own hearing loss for years but finally after all our complaints, got hearing aids. I went through the same dilemma with my ex-husband whom I finally convinced needed them as well. Prior to the current trend to wear and show off expensive headphones, ear attachments like hearing aides were things “old people” wore and were seen by my generation to be a handicap. So, out of vanity none of us ever wanted to need them, let alone get them. But I fear that most young people who have grown up using headphones on a daily and hourly basis will experience hearing loss

by the time they are 30 or younger and will all be wearing hearing aids! This will suddenly make hearing aids very chic! I will admit that the new-fangled hearing aides are pretty “fancy-shmancy” and may be considered the newest accessory to our wardrobes. However, as this time I do not have an extra $6500 laying around nor if I did, would want to spend it on hearing aids! Thanks, anyway! I want to listen, and I want to hear, and I want to be heard! So, I ask you, why is the level of music in bars, clubs, prides, street fairs, cars and private residences so loud? Can someone please give me a good answer, because I can’t think of one. The music ends up distorted. I cannot hear myself think nor can I have a conversation without losing my voice by night’s end, and don’t think it’s cute, cool, hip or fun! It’s dangerous! I will hope that some of the bar owner’s, DJ’s, sound guys and any other professionals who deal with sound will listen up (if they can still hear, I know, sorry) and start looking out for our ear’s sake and turn down the volume. Please stop abusing our ability to hear. Wishing You All a very Happy & Safe Holiday XOXO, Jill,

DAPHEALTH DAP HEALTH OPENS ITS THIRD FREE SEXUAL WELLNESS CLINIC

On Tuesday, December 12, DAP Health will officially open the doors to its third free sexual wellness clinic, this latest outpost to be headquartered at Stonewall Medical Center, located at 68555 Ramon Road in Cathedral City.

Thanks to the nonprofit’s absorption of the Borrego Health system almost six months ago, its capacity to provide sexual health services to women and to LGBTQ people (including those seeking gender-affirming navigation and care) has vastly increased.

Joining existing clinics in Palm Springs and Indio, the latest facility — headquartered at Stonewall Medical Center in Cathedral City — will emphasize services for women and members of the LGBTQ community, including those seeking gender-affirming navigation and care.

The nonprofit’s first such clinic was originally known as The Dock when it debuted within the Barbara Keller LOVE Building on DAP Health’s Sunrise campus in Palm Springs in 2015.

42 THESTANDARDPS.COM

The Dock was renamed the Orange Clinic in January 2023, when it relocated to the newly renovated, former county structure now known as the Annette Bloch CARE Building, across the way from the LOVE Building. A second sexual wellness clinic in Indio was unveiled in July 2022. The two present clinics currently serve almost 1,100 patients per month. Sexual health is of prime import to DAP Health. Just some of the organization’s achievements in this area include: •

• • • •

• •

The Dock initially charging a flat fee of $125 for those without insurance, a significant step in increasing access. All sexual wellness clinics now offer most HIV and STI testing, and related services, at no cost. Its June 2020 licensing of a mobile medical unit for STI testing. Its July 2021 establishment of free sexual wellness services. Its 2023 Creativity & Innovation Award, from the Inland Empire Health Plan, for its 2022 mpox response. Its 2023 Center for Quality Improvement & Innovation Quality Award for Leadership in Quality Improvement of its Ryan White HIV/AIDS Program. A partnership with gay dating app Mistr to provide statewide virtual PrEP and virtual HIV care. The reduction in wait times so that anyone with HIV — or anyone wanting to start PrEP — can obtain medication within 72 hours. The Health Resources and Services Administration’s (HRSA) recent announcement of the recipients of its 2023 Community Health Quality Recognition (CHQR) badges, which recognize outstanding health center performance in a variety of clinical areas, including behavioral health, maternal health, cancer screening, and HIV prevention and care, as well as overall quality performance. DAP Health was one of eight health centers recognized, in the HIV prevention and care category.

In the nine months since its opening, the Orange Clinic has had: • 6,403 patient visits. • Almost 500 people started on PrEP for the prevention of HIV. • Almost 1,500 people treated for one or more STIs. “With DAP Health’s free sexual wellness clinics in Palm Springs and Indio at capacity, there clearly was sufficient patient demand to support a third location,” says DAP Health Chief of Community Health C.J. Tobe. “When we factor in the continued rise of sexually transmitted infections, duplicating our Orange Clinic model — where a free sexual health clinic is located at the same site at which DAP Health provides ongoing general clinical services — simply makes sense.” Formerly part of the Borrego Health system, Stonewall Medical Center has long provided quality and compassionate health care to both the LGBTQ+ community and members of the general population. Its infectious disease specialists focus on patients with HIV/AIDS, hepatitis B and C, and STIs. Stonewall also provides transgender health care, PrEP and PEP HIV prevention, behavioral health, and dental services.

DECEMBER 2023 43

DAPHEALTH As is the case in Palm Springs and Indio, Cathedral City’s sexual wellness clinic at Stonewall will be open Monday through Friday, from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., with a one-hour lunch break closure for staff between 11:45 a.m. and 12:45 p.m. All services will be free, and will include: • • • • • • • •

HIV / hepatitis C / STI testing. STI treatment. Pregnancy testing. Birth control. PrEP & PEP for HIV prevention. Doxy PrEP and PEP for STI prevention. A patient’s first two RapidStART visits once diagnosed with a new HIV infection. The JYNNEOS vaccine to prevent mpox.

Serving on staff will be: •

• • •

• • • •

Director of Specialty Programs Dr. Jason Halperin, whose focus will be on gender-affirming care as well as on those living with, or at risk of, contracting HIV. Director of Gender Health and Wellness Jacob Rostovsky. Gender Health and Wellness Manager Mita Beach. Gender Health and Wellness Navigator Mateo Williamson, who will provide linkage to gender-affirming care, and assistance with transportation, insurance, medication coverage, housing/wellness/food referrals, and other support. Family Nurse Practitioner Brandi Teegarden. Sexual Wellness Registered Nurse Jody Cap. Licensed Vocational Nurse/Prescription Coordinator Tiffany Burdett. Early Intervention and PrEP Specialist Alexis Rocha, who will provide linkage to care and support for HIV and hepatitis C patients, and assistance with transportation, insurance, medication coverage, housing/wellness/food referrals, and other support. PrEP navigators who can provide help with transportation, insurance, medication coverage, housing/wellness/food referrals, and other support. Patient Service Representative Jadira Hernandez, who will help with scheduling, take incoming phone calls, and facilitate patient check-in and checkout.

“It’s always all about access,” continues Tobe. “Having a new free sexual wellness clinic provides folks in and around the Cathedral City area a place closer to home where they can access no-barrier, no-red-tape, no-shame, and no-stigma sexual wellness care.”

He continues: “While the sheer existence of this new sexual wellness clinic makes me very happy, I think I’m most excited to be able to offer a gender health and wellness team at Stonewall, whose lifesaving gender-affirming care navigation services will be entirely free and accessed through the new sexual wellness clinic as well.” “Trans health care isn’t typical health care,” says Gender Health and Wellness Manager Mita Beach, who identifies as nonbinary and queer, in the just-released fall issue of DAP Health magazine. “Typically, when people go to the clinic, it’s because they’re sick or because they have to go once a year for a check-up.” But trans people often need to see a provider more frequently, especially if they are receiving gender-affirming hormone therapy, which needs to be monitored. “People of trans experience and nonbinary communities have increased rates of HIV acquisition, especially those of color,” says Director of Specialty Programs Dr. Jason Halperin, in the same article. “We know that racism and stigma play the greatest role in driving these increased rates. Furthermore, when structures of power such as the police — or increasingly, legislatures — target and stigmatize communities, we will inevitably see worsening health outcomes due to exclusion.” Halperin goes on to stress that DAP Health “must commit even more to this work. We must shine our light bright and far. Our clinics need to ensure easy and supportive accessibility to gender-affirming care. We must also continue to work in solidarity with those across our country.” Those interested in making an appointment at Cathedral City’s new Stonewall sexual wellness clinic may call 760.969.5740.

TRANSCENDANCE UNDERSTANDING WHO IS REALLY TRANSGENDER? BY JACQUELYN JAMES The transgender community is small -- with some estimates showing that we make up less than 1% of the population over the age of 13, according to the most recent research from the University of California, Los Angeles. Gender transition is an incredibly individual and personal process as well being an extremely difficult and complex journey when it comes to making decisions involving surgeries. Not all transgendered people choose to undergo surgery. Transitioning can involve a myriad of steps and interventions depending on the individual’s needs and desired outcome. Some of these decisions include undergoing hormone therapy and the social and public transition involving changing their name, pronouns, birth certificates and in how they desire to present themselves publicly. The American Psychiatric Association along with scores of other medical and mental health organizations around the world classify being transgender is not a mental disorder. Instead, they are recognizing gender dysphoria, which refers to the distress that may result from the incongruence between one’s gender identity and their assigned sex at birth. Having a diagnosis with Gender Dysphoria can raise mental health concerns for some transgender individuals. Transgender people are more likely to experience mental health conditions such as anxiety, depression or suicidal thoughts than their cisgender peers, studies have shown. This is often due to discrimination from both social and political forces, as well as the gender dysphoria itself. Anti-transgender rhetoric makes it seem as though transgender people have a lot of depression because we are transgender which, to be clear, we have depression because of the way the world treats us for being transgender. While this may be true for some, it’s far from true for everyone. Many think or assume that being transgender is just a phase or a state of confusion. Transgender people have a very clear and consistent understanding of their own gender identity. Some people mistakenly believe that being transgender is just a recent trend. Well in fact, gender diversity has existed throughout our human history and across various cultures around the world. While recently the transgender community is receiving more media attention now because we are an easy target and that will be the topic of an upcoming column, evidence credibly shows it’s not just some recent trend that will fade away. Then

there are those few outspoken transgender individuals who may indeed want the attention, but that’s nowhere near the truth for the majority of transgender people. Most want to feel normal and resist the attention by just wanting to blend in with the rest of society living a normal and happy life. However, the demographic has dominated recent political conversation, which makes it seem like so many people are against the transgender community. There are vast numbers of people in this country who are stuck with more curiosity than those who are just simply hating because of our existence. Then there are those who do offer support and understanding, who have questions and want to learn more. There is also no evidence that suggests that transgender people are more sexually active than any other type of person. A propensity to have sex is unrelated to one’s gender identity. Transgender people can have any sexual orientation—gay, straight, bisexual, etc. Gender identity goes beyond physical attributes. It is about how someone feels internally and how they identify within themselves. Gender identity and sexual orientation are distinct aspects of a person’s identity. The most delicate part of this conversation regarding the transgender community is when children are involved. Some children may begin to express a gender identity that differs from the sex they were assigned at a very young age, often as early as preschool or even earlier. It’s important to note that not all children who express a gender identity different from their birth gender will continue to identify as transgender as they grow older. We will certainly take a deep dive on this topic in a future column. Support groups have been a lifeline for many in the transgender community who may face isolation and discrimination in other circles. It’s important to be surrounded by people who are safe and supportive, to remind ourselves of the community that’s out there waiting with open arms. Representation is important and the transgender people are looking to live safely and happily -- just like everyone else.
