Nathanael Lewis News Editor Andrea Horwath, leader of the provincial NDP, met with local supporters last Friday evening at the Blue Dog Café.

Horwath, along with Local NDP representatives Alex Felsky and Marc Laferriere, met with supporters to speak one-on-one about their concerns for the community.

Horwath spoke specifically towards Laurier Brantford students and her concern for them when it comes to student debt.

“I’ve talked to a lot of students who are just so frustrated because they go to college, they go to university, they go back to college - trying to find whatever it is that is actually going to land them a job that they can actually start calling a career,” said Horwath. “[The NDPs] were the only ones who were actually calling on the government, for the last number of years, to freeze tuition fees so that we could then start thinking about how do we start keeping them down. But as long as they’re climbing every year, we’re never going to get tuition fees under control.

We know the students in Ontario are holding large debt loads and we know also in the country, per capita, funding to post-secondary is the lowest – it’s at the bottom of the barrel in

the entire nation. It’s not acceptable.

Students are stuck really. Not only are they stuck with huge debt loads, but then when they graduate there are no jobs for them.”

Brantford Police catch robber Melissa Webster Staff Last Wednesday, a man by the name of Matthew Clifford Marshall, 22, was arrested and charged with robbery involving a firearm on Sunday, September 15, 2013. Police found a modified .22 caliber rifle in his backpack with an abundance of ammunition, which had been used at the robbery.

The victim of the robbery was trying to locate his girlfriend when he was robbed at gunpoint. He was led into a residence on Sheridan street, where he was then robbed.

The suspects left the scene in a vehicle,

which the Community Patrol Officers later found.

Marshall now faces multiple charges, including robbery with a firearm and breach of probation, as well as many other criminal code offenses that are connected to the unauthorized possession of a firearm.

Marshall is currently being held in police custody awaiting a bail hearing.

Marshall was not the only one involved in the armed robbery, there was a 16-year-old female also taken into custody for unauthor-

ized possession of a firearm, but she was later released. The female will later attend a court date, due to being released on a promise to appear.

Roger Vanevery, 29, was also charged with robbery with a firearm, possession of a firearm and unauthorized possession of a firearm.

Vanevery was subsequently held in custody.

A third male suspect fled the scene, identified as being involved. He is currently at large and is wanted for several criminal code offenses.

Brantford Police crack down on cocaine Nathanael Lewis News Editor Last Thursday, the Brantford Police Street Crime Unit apprehended a suspect on drug related charges.

This is yet another investigation into people trafficking cocaine from residences in the City of Brantford.

cocaine, a combined street value of approximately $8,000.

Sandhu has been charged with trafficking a controlled substance, possession with the purpose to traffic and possession of the proceeds of crime.

This incident comes just two days after a warrant was executed on a Brant Avenue residence.

In that case, Brantford Police, along with the assistance of the Waterloo Police K9 Unit, found marijuana at the location and two residents were arrested.

The Brantford Police Service encourages anyone with information on drug trafficking or other drug related crimes to contact them.

Journalism department looking to correct program issues Oren Weiner On Campus Editor

Students in the Public Relations and Emerging Journalism and New Media concentration might be breathing easier come fall 2014 if the new Journalism program proposal is approved this December. Susan Ferguson, coordinator of the Journalism program, and associates have devised a new curriculum plan to resolve long-standing issues.

Each year, third-year students that choose to study the broadcast, public relations, or new media streams must attend Conestoga College in Kitchener for both fall and winter semesters. This typically small group of students are obligated to apply to Conestoga through Laurier, based on a loose agreement that the two postsecondary institutions have. However, the agreement is so loose that students in the public relations and new media stream have expressed frustration over what they feel is a strong disconnect between the two schools.

“I enjoyed what I got out of it, but there definitely needs to be a greater sense of organization,” said Chelsea Bendetti, who spent last year at Conestoga. Concerning the two institutions disconnect, Bendetti states, “It seems like a confusing process to go there in third year and then come back.”

Kathleen MacDonald is a public relations student and, like Bendetti, acknowledged that she loved the experience of studying at Conestoga, but that it was not what she expected. She explained that Laurier had led her to believe that she would be studying the art of public relations to a greater ex-

tent. Instead, the coursework offered at Conestoga was mostly marketing-oriented, with only one public relations course out of a total of 14 for the year.

“I thought we would learn more about PR campaigns, and how to spin certain things,” said MacDonald of her time at Conestoga. She added, “We actually spent a lot of time on journalism ledes, and we were told that what we had learned about ledes at Laurier was wrong.”

Because the Conestoga New Media and PR streams are considered post-graduate programs, the college had little understanding of the Laurier students’ presence. At one point, Conestoga contacted the Laurier students requesting proof of an undergraduate degree.

“The Conestoga teachers had no idea who we were or why we were there,” commented MacDonald and Bendetti. Bendetti added, “The university just sent us away, not knowing what’s involved.”

Upon returning to Brantford, Bendetti and MacDonald found that the journalism program had not made any accommodations for their distinct academic situation. This problem for Bendetti and company is no more apparent than in the Journalism Project course, where students from all journalism streams must complete a research project on a topic of choice. While there are two professors overseeing the course, one for broadcast and one for print students, a PR instructor is yet to be appointed to oversee and assist the PR

students.

“I feel like they’re asking us to jump back into print, when our focus is in PR,” Bendetti said of the nature of the Journalism Project course. MacDonald added that upon returning to Brantford, it seemed that Laurier had “no idea” what they had done there.

The issues that MacDonald and Bendetti have experienced are not something that the university has taken lightly, and they may just become a thing of the past coming this winter.

Laurier, aware of the problem, decided it was time for change.

“The departure of students to Conestoga hasn’t been a popular option, so we’ve been wanting to work around that for quite some time, and this was a good opportunity,” said Ferguson.

On the issue of the Conestoga course content not living up to student expectations, Ferguson commented, “The key problem is that you’re working with two autonomous universities, so they can make changes to their curriculum, without us.” She added, “We need to make sure the students know what they are getting.”

Ferguson also explained that due to the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (FIPPA), Laurier could not have access to their students’ transcripts and other information while at Conestoga. As a result, Laurier’s administration did not fully understand what content their students had been studying. According to Ferguson, that issue should be solved, as both institutions have managed to work around

the information exchange restrictions posed in FIPPA. The proposal for the revamping of the journalism program is essentially, as Ferguson describes it, a “rejigging of the curriculum.” Instead of Laurier students coming to Conestoga, Conestoga will be coming to Brantford, bringing its digital media program along with it. Conestoga’s digital media program will also be a four-year program, rather than just a one-year stint.

With the new program proposal, students will have three stream options to choose from. These options include Media Studies, a more theoretical program analysis of journalism; Print and Broadcast Journalism, which will teach students both technical and writing skills; and Public Relations, which will instruct students on public opinion research, influence and persuasion, and the political implications.

“The key thing is all will learn the technical skills, and still be learning the art of story-telling,” Ferguson explained. “All streams will learn the politics of issue-advocacy; those are the fundamentals of the core curriculum.”

Although the proposal is yet to be approved, prospective journalism students might very well have a bright academic future to look forward to. As it now stands, Laurier will continue to listen to the concerns of the journalism students.

Laurier Brantford bites: A taste of your local eateries

Your student cafeteria is anything you make it. Here are eight excellent choices in downtown Brantford that have the credentials of affordability, quality food, locality and are no further than a five to 10 minute walk from anywhere on campus.

If anyone is an expert on breakfast, it is Walt Junior from the hit AMC series Breaking Bad. Junior would agree that Kel’s Family Restaurant is the best place for a nice sit down breakfast.

It hosts a variety of traditional and unique home-cooked breakfast and brunch dishes, and is located at 153 West Street, across from the VIA Rail station. Customers are mostly regulars, as not many can just go once. The yummy food and friendly service will make it your new monthly ritual.

If I had to pick a denomination of pizza, it would be Posto; I religiously order this pizza, and I honestly don’t touch pizza from anywhere else. Their

“Pick-Up Special”, two medium pizzas with two toppings each, is fairly inexpensive. Pizza Posto serves up the best pizza deals downtown. Located at 213 Market Street, they focus on deep dish pizza, with a selection of 21 toppings and a variety of side orders.

Taco Tuesday: three Tacos for a reasonably low price. When thinking of a burrito, you are usually not prepared to even imagine what the Burrito Brothers bring to the counter. The combination of customizability and quality has been making their tacos and burritos works of art since 2012. Three words for you: gourmet, fresh and delicious.

No amount of McDonald’s burgers will prepare you for one burger from Admiral’s. Most patties are nothing compared to the burgers at Admiral Submarine, located at 55 Dalhousie Street. They don’t have a drive-thru, and they don’t get handed to you with a kiss from your mom, but the food

you get from Admiral’s is undoubtedly better than any you will get from a fast-food joint or your parents’ barbeque. When they hand you that box, you won’t question why they don’t hand food out a window.

Sandwiches, hot meats, hearty soups, stews, chili and I can’t go without mentioning the tender pulled pork sandwiches. If you think you know a real lunch, you don’t, until you know Strode’s. Hot and ready food waiting to be dished, daily specials, and a B.B.Q. made to look like a pig make Strode’s the ideal lunch venue. It’s located at 117 Market Street, beside Imperial Hall.

Without a doubt in my stomach, the best Almond Soo Guy for miles comes from Oriental, located at 162-164 Market Street. A selection of delicious dinner combinations feeds groups from one to six people with prices ranging from under seven dollars to upwards

of 60. A great place to go out for a meal with friends and the perfect takeout suggestion to end a busy week of school, you can relax and eat some good, filling food and still have some leftovers.

What would a downtown full of liberal arts students be incomplete without?

Sushi! To be more specific, it’s Sushi On Colborne, located at 120 Colborne Street, and featuring a Japanese and Chinese style cuisine. The affordability is unbelievable when confronting the amazing quality and taste of beautifully displayed and well-sized portions. Signature Maki Rolls at most are priced at about 20 dollars. That is a few bucks cheaper than most sushi places.

The salad and Miso soup are the biggest portions I have been served anywhere.

Album reviews: Matthew Good and Avicii Amber Richardson A&E Editor Matthew Good, Arrows of Desire: 3/5 Canadian icon Matthew Good released his latest studio album Arrows of Desire on September 24th. The album has a familiar Matt Good sting to it--the one that makes you question all of your life choices. Arrows of Desire provides a commentary on love and society, undeniably touching

on particular issues surrounding mental health as well. Good’s political activism is apparent through the lyrics of plea woven throughout the album, but it isn’t an overly preachy, self-righteous political album like one might expect it to be.

Avicii, True: 4/5 Swedish house DJ, Avicii, released his first studio album on September 13th. Avicii enlisted the help of musicians such as Mike Einziger and Adam Lambert to create an album with a truly unique sound.

True is a solid mix of EDM, folk, and country, which is a drastic change from

the typical house sound he’s produced in the past. This album is fun and lively, and kind of makes you want to have a cowboy boot dance party. The nice thing about True is that it makes you want to dance without being too clubby, so you can listen to it in your bedroom without the urge to pop molly and party for days.

Seeing the positive amidst the Miss America controversy Dillon Giancola Features Editor By now we have all heard that last Sunday, Nina Davuluri, an IndianAmerican woman, won the Miss America beauty pageant. The racist tweets that followed are still just as shocking if you are reading them for the tenth time or the first. It is unfortunate that what should be a celebrated moment of diversity and equality is instead marred by controversy and racism. But maybe all is not lost, and the good still outshines the bad. Davuluri herself said she was not surprised or bothered by the comments. She had experienced a similar reaction when she became Miss New York, and thought that it might happen again. But Davuluri pointed out the support she got from Vanessa Williams, the first African-American to win the pageant in 1983. 30 years ago, Williams was treated the same way, yet a black Miss America would not cause any reaction today. This is a case where it shows how much racial awareness has evolved, and yet how far we still have as a society to go.

Davuluri’s win and the comments that followed have sparked plenty of debates and questions. Such as, would a similar reaction take place if this happened in Canada, and are people of Indian descent offended by the comments, or proud of Davuluri’s accomplishments? Brantford Laurier students Swathy Sooriyakumar and Jujhar Singh offered their thoughts on the matter as people of Indian descent.

Sooriyakumar, a Sri Lankan Canadian born in Markham, and second year journalism major, was not fazed by the tweets. “I actually found it hilarious that there are people out there that still think

this way. This girl is beautiful, successful, and has a degree in medicine, but all these people that don’t feel good about themselves go on twitter to be bullies,” Sooriyakumar said.

While she was not surprised by the negativity, Sooriyakumar was taken aback by the extreme that some people went to.

“I knew that something might happen, but not to that extent. Some of the stuff is just stupid, like people actually saying ‘doesn’t Miss America have to be American?’ People really need to think before they type.

Jujhar Singh is an Indian citizen from Bahrain and second year Business Technology Management major. His initial reaction was that of pride that a woman of Indian background won. He did not expect any negative reaction, because to him she is just as American as anybody else. “It’s kind of stupid. She is of Hindu background, not Muslim, and an American first. What does that say about their president, of Kenyan ethnicity, if they don’t think she is a real American?” Singh asked.

Neither of them thinks something like this would happen in Canada. “Sure, in Canada we are stereotypically nicer, but Canada is also a lot more diverse. There are so many different cultures here. In the States they might be more old fashioned in their thinking, but we are much more accepting here,” Sooriyakumar said.

“Canada has been built by multiculturalism. I think there are 141 different nationalities here,” Singh said.

And while they both pointed out that a similar video recently surfaced from Brampton, Singh was quick to say that the girl who made the video eventually learned and admitted she was wrong. “She apologized, and the video died off. To me that shows the nature of Canada,” Singh said.

Singh has not experienced any racism directly, but said that his dad was once arrested in an airport in Turkey because the

guards thought he was Osama Bin Laden.

“He just laughed it off and they let him go,” Singh said. That is the attitude that Singh has about racism in general. He does not like it, but it happens, and life goes on.

“Hopefully this enlightens people about different cultures, and some people can learn a lesson as a result. It was going to happen eventually, anyway,” Singh stated.

Sooriyakumar has a tougher time believing that people still act that way. “I think if everybody takes more time to use common sense, that will go a long way towards in stopping racism. I think it has a lot to do with people having such easy access to technology and not thinking before they type,” Sooriyakumar said.

She has not personally experienced much racism either, but there was a time when her and some other friends of colour were at the beach and told that they belonged in the shallow end. “We were a little surprised, but we just ignored him and kept swimming,” Sooriyakumar said.

They both think that more good was accomplished then bad. “The judges selected her to win, and the judges are American. They could have picked Miss Kansas, who was blonde and white, but they picked Miss New York because she deserved it regardless of her skin colour,” Singh said.

“I’m just so proud of her,” Sooriyakumar said. “Competing in a pageant is really hard to begin with, let alone actually winning and she had to deal with all this twitter stuff. But she kept her head high, and is a great example of the Indian culture and what people can overcome.”

The Canada you don’t know: Life in Cambridge Bay Dillon Giancola Features Editor It’s safe to say that most Canadians have never heard of the town of Cambridge Bay, never mind being able to locate it on a map. The same could be said of Lynette and Sean Holmes, until three years ago. At that time they and their three kids were living in Bona Vista, Newfoundland, where Lynette was a nurse at the small local hospital.

Then, friends of theirs moved their family to Cambridge Bay, located on Victoria Island in Nunavut,, to work in addiction counselling on the town council. Fast forward to today, and Lynette and her family have been living there for a year and a half. Moving your family is always a big decision, but it does not get more difficult than moving your family to the extreme, barren north of Canada. Yet, this is the reality that the Holmes faced, and this is their story of how they overcame difficulties and now proudly call Cambridge Bay their home.

Lynette, Sean, and their three kids had been living a pleasant life in the small coastal town of Bona Vista, Newfoundland.

They both grew up in Newfoundland. But when friends of theirs moved to Cambridge Bay, the Holmes’ interest was piqued.

“We kind of wanted something new and exciting. There was a website that advertised nurses in Nunavut, and talked about all the benefits that they get and of course the money. We did a lot of research and it seemed like an adventure and we thought it was the perfect time to do that,” Lynette explains.

Besides the nursing job for Holmes, there were also opportunities for Sean.

There are still a lot of social issues there, such as oppression of the native people there, dating back to when Cambridge Bay was settled. This is exactly what Sean was looking for, and the chance to help people in need and that have been hurt is something that intereted the Holmes. Sean is currently the program manager of the Cambridge Bay Childcare Society. Lynette

also mentioned that with their kids all still fairly young, it was a perfect time to move, as they would not miss Newfoundland as much and would not be aware of the social issues.

Cambrudge Bay is so far north, that there are no trees at all, just tundra. To get there you have to take quite the travel route, which includes a flight landing on a dirt path. “That’s quite the experience in itself, landing on a dirt runway with mud and rocks flying everywhere. When we first flew here it was winter, and minus 40. Our eyelashes froze together as soon as we got off the plane and it hurt to breathe,” Lynette said.

The Holmes faced plenty of challenges initially, with adjusting to the new culture being the most daunting. “It’s hard to go from a province where being white is the majority, to a town where being white is a minority, and it is a distinct cultural and racial difference,” Lynette said. In a town of 1600 people, only 30 per cent are white.

Lynette said that it was hardest on her children. They stood out with their blue eyes and light hair, and were bullied quite a bit at first. However, she emphasized that the community is tight knit and very loving. “Now that the people have gotten to know us, we are loved in the community, and our kids are friends with everyone,” Lynette said.

Another challenge was just getting used to daily living. There are no paved streets, everything is grated. The water gets trucked in to each home, and the sewage gets trucked out. Worst of all, is how expensive everything is. “The first time I walked into the grocery store, I thought, ‘we’re never going to eat anything.’ I only bought a loaf of bread,” Lynette recalled.

But if they were going to live there, they would have no choice but to adapt, and get used to the price of goods. “Now, if it looks fresh, we buy it, even if it is past its

date. You don’t care if the asparagus is a little rotten or 12 dollars a pound, you just buy it. We don’t look at the bill, or else we would never buy anything, “Lynette said.

The prices vary depending on time of year, and some of the food prices are subsidized.

But mayonnaise still costs nine dollars a jar, and junk food is always full price. “At first, when I saw that a block of cheese was 22 dollars, I wanted to start smuggling cheese through the airport,” joked Lynette.

Living in Cambridge Bay is also just plain weird, according to them. Holmes said in the summer months there is 24 hours of daylight. “The kids don’t know if its morning, noon or night. It’s not strange to see five year old children outside at three in the morning,” Lynette said.

Differences aside, the Holmes have grown to love their community. “There are still things that make me feel like I’m in another country, but the people here are so family oriented and it makes me feel like I’m still in small town Newfoundland,” Lynette said. Cambridge Bay is still a developing community though, and with that comes a lot of social issues. “As a nurse, I see the effects of drugs and alcohol first hand, and it is very sad. I do a lot of on call work, and you see lots of family violence,” Lynette said. Lynette explains that a lot of the issues there stem from when Cambridge Bay was settled. “As a nomadic people, they are very talented and resourceful, they can do amazing artwork out of stone with just their hands. But when the government came and made them move off the land and stuck them in residential schools, their lifestyle was flipped right on its head,” Lynette explained. Compassion is propelling Sean and Lynette to do whatever they can to help the people of the community.

The Holmes also find themselves learning so much from the local Inuit people. “I’m most amazed by the elders, how much respect everybody has for them,

and how much they care about the younger generation,” Lynette said. The elders are very active in trying to instill the old ways to the young people so that the traditions are not lost. Lynette also marvelled at how they discipline their children. “They talk to the children to get them to understand why they do things a certain way. They want the kids to be able to make choices for themselves, let them eat when they are hungry and go to bed when they are tired,” Lynette explained. It is something that she really notices coming from a structured environment.

What was strange to the Holmes when they first moved to Cambridge Bay in March of 2012, now is very familiar. “It feels like home now. Like we went on vacation, for a month, and I just wanted to go home.

On the flight back I was excited to see my house and my street and my neighbours, even the grocery store. And my kids are excited to see all their friends and get back to school,” Lynette raved.

The future is uncertain for the Holmes.

They initially came to Cambridge Bay with no contract, but a three year goal. While Lynette is willing to stay as many as 10 years, Sean is not as sure. They are finding a lot of issues with the school system, and there are a lot of opportunities lacking from those of southern Canadian schools. “We don’t want our kids to fall behind in terms of education, and I want my little girl to be able to take ballet lessons and my boys take music lessons. There are not a lot of those kinds of things available here,” Lynette said.

While Lynette may not know what life has in store for the Holmes, she does know that she loves where she lives and could not ask for anything more. As Lynette learned, “as long as you keep an open mind and an open heart, anyone can become your family and anywhere can become your home.”

Men’s extramural basketball team prep for big season Kyle Morrison Sports Editor With fall arriving, it is almost time for Laurier Brantford’s men’s extramural basketball team to step onto the court for their third season of play in the OCAA. After succeeding last season in bringing home one of Laurier Brantford’s first championship medals last November, silver in a tournament at George Brown College.

But fifth year co-captain, Matthew Wright, is poised for bigger and better things in 2013-2014. With tryouts now over and the roster set, fans will be seeing a much deeper and bigger lineup, due in part to better conditioning in the offseason.

“Everyone from the team last year has returned in better shape… There are some new additions with a lot of athleticism,” Wright says. “It’s going to be a track meet every game.”

Athleticism is important when you want to run an up tempo offense, something that worked well for the team for much of last season, but, by the end of it, it was clear the team was tired.

Among the newcomers that impressed

Wright in tryouts with their athleticism was rookie, Chuck Collins. Collins comes into the season with a lot of experience. Growing up, he played in the Ontario Basketball Association and high school basketball for three years. With this in mind, he sees no problem with taking his game to the next level against the bigger and stronger players of OCAA. “I’m looking forward to [playing extramural basketball]. With good guys on the team like Matt, you have to prepare to that level.”

What was also lacking on the LB Golden Hawks squad in years past was any sort of big man down in the post. Having any player over 6’4’’ in OCAA extramural basketball proves to be a huge advantage, because as the Golden Hawks found, they are hard to match up against. Wright would be defending players much taller than him last season and sometimes the Hawks would have to force shots, with no other options being available.

This should no longer be a problem, Wright says. Players came into the tryouts this year with a lot more size. “I was

surprised by a couple new big guys we had … something we lacked in the past couple years,” says Wright. “We have an inside presence this year, finally.”

The main addition to the roster’s newfound size is 6’6’’ centre Jaeger Greenway. At this stage he is raw talent, with his post-game and footwork being the biggest areas he needs to work on, but he’s physical and can shoot the ball. But finally, the Hawks have something that’s hard to come by, and may be the missing piece in that OCAA championship puzzle.

The season starts on October 24, with the men’s team’s first tournament taking place at the University of Toronto’s Mississauga campus on November 15, where they turned in their worst performance of the season in 2012-2013, losing out to Centennial College in the semi-finals.

With the roster that Wright and cocaptain, Oje Izirein have put together, fans had better believe a performance like that won’t happen again.

Golden Hawks suffer big loss against Western Kyle Morrison Sports Editor

When it looked like an upset may be possible, Laurier’s bubble burst. When the final whistle blew, it was simply a Saturday like three of the four before it; ending with a crushing loss, 45-24, to the Western Mustangs (50).

The first half of the game belonged to the Golden Hawks (1-4). After one quarter of play, Laurier was up 10-0 on the secondranked team in the CIS. The tide began to turn with the Mustangs scoring five points to cut the lead in half on a safety and field goal by Lirim Hajrullahu.

Laurier would be reenergized with just over four minutes to go in the second quarter when running back, Dillon Campbell, took a hand-off from quarterback James Fracas, and broke away from the Mustangs’ defense. 100 yards later, Campbell was in for the touchdown to put Laurier up by 12. Plays like this made it seem like the Golden Hawks were going to pull off the upset. The momentum and crowd was on their side.

But things began to crumble when the Mustangs got the ball back. With only a little over a minute left in the second half, Western running back, Yannick Harou, punched in for the touchdown from the goal line.

That proved to be the turning point, as Western came out in the second half and showed why they were the second-ranked team in Canada, scoring 17 unanswered points in the third quarter. With a 29-17 lead, Western did not look

back. They held the Golden Hawks to a single touchdown in the entire second half, on their way to a 45-27 victory, and their fifth straight win dating back to the start of the season.

The Golden Hawks have passed the halfway point of the year, and once again will finish without a winning record. It has been four years since Laurier was over .500, when they finished with six wins and three losses in 2009. It is very unfortunate for a team that is less than a decade removed from Canadian university football glory, when they were winners of the 2005 Vanier Cup. All that’s left to look forward to on the schedule is next Saturday’s Homecoming matchup against Windsor.

Although not a powerhouse like Western, the Guelph Lancers (5-3) are a difficult matchup.

What’s a relief, for a Laurier defence that has struggled at times this season, is that Windsor’s quarterback, Austin Kennedy, may miss the September 28 matchup due to injury. Kennedy injured his knee running in the third quarter of this past week’s game against U of T. Kennedy is versatile, being able to pass and run the ball effectively, and could prove tough to contain.

Things only get tougher from here, so hopefully Laurier puts on a good show for the Homecoming fans.

The Golden Hawks will finish the season with games against Queen’s University, third-ranked in the CIS, and ninth-ranked McMaster.

My friend, Hitler Cody Groat Opinion Editor I wasn’t sure if shock was the appropriate word, or amazement, or even anger for what I read one day while online. As a bit of context, my late grandfather, as well as my step-father’s father, both fought in World War Two, and of course I’m forever grateful to them and those like them who fought. I know a few things for sure about those five years of conflict, first being that what a lot of people were fighting for wasn’t political, but for the sake of humanity. They were

saving people who were being massacred for their beliefs. Another thing I know for sure is that Adolf Hitler was the bad guy. What shocked me then, were the letters to the dictator from none other than the non-violent leader of the Indian independence movement, Mahatma Gandhi. The letters from Gandhi end with the words, “I remain your sincere friend”. Words that were written only two months before the formal start of the World War. Of course, I thought maybe these letters were fake - I’ll admit, I first saw them on the website BuzzFeed. Upon doing some research, however, I found they were in fact fully legitimate. The full letter,

the most famous one (which can be read on the Sputnik website), is now kept at Mani Bhavan, in Mumbai, India. The museum dedicated to anything Gandhi was visited

by Barack Obama in 2010, and I really want to know what he thought of the communication. To me, I think it’s a bit, well, juvenile.

Gandhi starts the letter with “Dear friend,” and continues to say: “Friends have been urging me to write to you for the sake of humanity.” In short and simple terms, he asks Hitler to simply

stop his fight and reconsider causing a war (and of course, he hopes his letter to Hitler isn’t too much of an inconvenience, and he’s sorry if it is). From what I’ve come to understand, it was the belief of Gandhi that several other options didn’t work to quell the ways of the dictator, so maybe a polite letter from him, whom Hitler would of known had fought peacefully to reach his goals, could help change his mind. Again, I think it may have been done with a kind heart, but it was immensely juvenile.

At the time this was written, Hitler had already started causing destruction in Europe, and his attitudes towards the Jewish people were known, even if his actions towards them weren’t. Gandhi knew he was a bad guy, essentially. So why did he treat him so kindly? I understand he was an advocate for peace, but I feel this was taking it too far. Think to the contrary all you want, but you can’t solve every problem by simply asking. That in itself is hard for me to write, as I think most war is unnecessary.

Try as hard as I may, I can’t appreciate Gandhi’s attempts. The Indian (well, I suppose it was still British at the time) government didn’t allow this letter to be sent to the Fuehrer.

That didn’t stop Gandhi from trying again, a year later, on Christmas Eve. In the first letter, “friend” may have been a simple gesture of friendliness, but in the second letter, I’m proven wrong, by Gandhi himself. It starts with the rather blunt line, “That I address you as a friend is no formality. I own no foes. My business in

life has been for the past 33 years to enlist the friendship of the whole of humanity by befriending mankind, irrespective of race, colour or creed.” This letter, much longer, tries again to stop the conflict. But, some of what Gandhi says in the hope of stopping Hitler actually just ticks me off. One line especially: “We have no doubt about your bravery or devotion to your fatherland, nor do we believe that you are the monster described by your opponents.” This may have been before total war and before the realization of what was fully happening in Germany, but, at this point, war was happening. War that my family and millions of families around the world were fighting in, and Gandhi was praising him? I think there’s a line between curiosity to Hitler and disrespect to those fighting for peace that Gandhi crossed. Again, by being juvenile.

These letters have been the base of a movie released in India titled “Dear Friend Hitler”, which I may just take the time to watch. It was filmed in India, and stars an all Indian cast, so I’m sure there will be some bias in depiction of the nation’s hero.

I’m curious to see the angle they take.

I tried as hard as I could to find if Hitler and Gandhi in fact ever did meet, and it seems they didn’t. But that didn’t mean Hitler didn’t know about him. Gandhi wrote letters to his “Dear Friend” in the hopes of stopping his movement. When some British officials asked Hitler if he had any idea how to stop Gandhi’s movement, it’s reported he said “It’s simple, kill him.”

Boston bombing calendars: Monetizing a tragedy Cody Groat Opinion Editor I was just leaving a meeting with Toronto City Councillor Mike Layton (Ward 19) on April 15th, when, as I always do, I decided to check Twitter. It wasn’t quite sure what had happened, all that was known though was that there was an explosion at the 117th Boston Marathon.

Several were injured, it was thought some were dead, but no one knew what had happened. I spent the rest of my day in line at a Chapters waiting with my friend so she would get a book signed by her idol, tattoo artist Kat Von D, most of the time following the events in Boston on my phone, as most of the world was. I saw the videos of the explosions, the viral photos of first responders, such as Carlos Arredondo, breaking down barriers and carrying the injured to safety, and was asking the questions millions others were, “who would do this?”

Not too long after, the names of two brothers spread around the news circuit, Dzhokhar and Tamerlan Tsarnaev, and the manhunt had begun. Once again, I followed the dramatic story unfold via Twitter. I read of the two stealing an SUV, apparently killing a Michigan Institute of

Technology (MIT) security guard named Sean Collier, and the death of suspect Tamerlan Tsarnaev during a shootout in the Boston suburb of Watertown. Then, like thousands, I followed the manhunt of police through Watertown to the find and, finally, capture of the 19 year old suspected terrorist Dzhokhar Tsarnaev. News aired of streets loaded with news vans and police vehicles. Cops were busting in doors and patrolling down the streets, guns out.

Citizens were to remain inside. Finally they found him, and a photo spread around the world of the bloodied teenager, face decorated with sniper sights. To end the mass of tweets, the Boston Police Force (@bostonpolice) sent one final, less than 140 character, message: “CAPTURED!!! The hunt is over. The search is done. The terror is over.

And justice has won. Suspect in custody.”

The police had won.

Maybe you can guess my reaction when I read on Twitter from CNN International (@cnni) last week that representatives from the same police force trying to control the terror in that eventful mid-April, Watertown Police Foundation, are asking people

to submit their photos, before a September 30th deadline, for none other than a 2014 “Boston Bombing” themed calendar. I was, quite frankly, annoyed and felt it was a disgrace to the victims, including those who passed away, such as eight-year-old Martin Richard. For the price of $13.00, you can buy the calendar which hopes to chronicle the events of those three eventful days, five months ago. There’s a hope for photos which show happiness at the end of the tragedy, memorials, or “people hugging”.

At the same time, they want photos taken by individuals of the police action during their Watertown manhunt. Funds will go towards “worthwhile projects that support the work of the Watertown Police”. To me though, it sounds like they’re just trying to bank on the disaster.

In my honest opinion, this is nothing but taking advantage of the situation. I have a really strong belief though that this will sell, and I wouldn’t be surprised if this in fact sold very well. Again, I could be wrong in assuming this (I have yet to find a statement), but I feel many of the victims and their families would in fact think this

as insulting. I’ve read stories of dancers who lost their legs, a man who remained in hospital for one hundred days, needing a total of 49 surgical procedures, and, the one that gets me the most, the fact that representatives of the Sandy Hook school shooting were running in the race as guests of honour. Again, they had to experience senseless destruction.

Really? Is this really the best option?

The families may simply not need to buy the calendar, but to me, the knowledge that individuals will be looking at the related images every day for a year would be enough to get me angry, sad, and make it impossible to start moving on from the trauma.

A photo spread around the media in the midst of the manhunt. The young eightyear-old who lost his life, holding a sign that read “No more hurting people. Peace” adorned with the well-known peace sign and two red hearts. I feel this was the most powerful image that could have come from the destruction, even if it was before the events of April 15th. I’m certain it won’t be used in the calendar.
