FROM THE EDITOR'S CHAIR n By Andy Wood
As the racing season draws to a close plans are already being made for next year. The delayed start due to the restrictions caused several adjustments to be made to provide a worthwhile season of events. Next year’s calendars will be planned with more confidence and no doubt all will be looking forward to a full uninterrupted season in 2022. Last month’s fuel shortages caused largely by panic buying may have had a short term effect on entries and attendances at some events. However looking ahead, perhaps in the no too distant future fuel will have effect on motor sporting activity. Electrical power has been with us for a little while now and is a regular feature in the youth classes in many trials. Adult machinery still relies on fossil fuel to power the engine but what is going to change this? No doubt we will see more road going machinery using electric power in the not too distant future and perhaps this will provide the turning point for off road counterparts to follow suit. There are a number of events in the calendar that cater in some cases exclusively for older machines. Looking at older machinery in use but for how long? Those with long enough riding memories have been filling entry lists for trials for a number of years riding machines they started their competitive careers on, albeit considerably modified. British machinery of fifty plus years is considered ‘classic’ but we are now approaching the time when that title could also be applied to early Spanish and Japanese trials machines. This of course will change the nature of the sections as the capabilities of these machines outweighs (outweighed) the British models in use. The racing side also has its classics as well and certainly in track racing events they form a regular part of the programme providing much enjoyment for those taking part and for those just watching. So it maybe that nostalgia will still play a big part in motorcycle sporting activity for years to come.

in attendance on a beautifully sunny day in the Garden of England, to see riders of all ages and ability on machines modern and yesteryear put on a thrilling display of racing. Grouped into four classes; Novice, Support, Upright and Open the action was always intriguing as riders were matched in terms of ability. Standout rider of the day was Chris Watts, the former Isle of Wight Wizard who cast a spell over his opposition with an unbeaten display. This saw him go unbeaten in the qualifying heats, before putting together four perfect laps in the winner takes all final, beating another Iwade protege James Laker into second place with Stoyan Stoyanov taking the third place spot. The novice class was the section that had the largest entry, a full scale 16 rider line up were put through four rounds of qualifying races, which certainly provided lots of moments of interest. Taya Thirtle, a regular at Iwade meetings and in the Youth Championship scored most of her points by passing from
the back to qualify for the final. Race 6 of the Novice Class saw Iwade Mini-Track graduate Jamie Willis pull off a win with a smart pass down the back straight to fire himself from third to first. In the winner takes all final it was the undefeated Mark Anderson who came away with the spoils, from Taya Thirtle, Richard Sar-Butt and Lawrence Fielding. The Support and upright classes were grouped together with the bizarre occurrence of riders finishing fourth in a race but still scoring three points for a win in their respective class Championship. The Upright class was won by a rider who was in the very first team at Iwade in 1972 - Graham Knowler. The Support class was won by another Iwade stalwart Mike Osborne. Over the past 51 years many riders have graced the shale at Iwade, and in the next 50, the goal is simple. Keep providing opportunities for track time for riders starting out in Speedway careers, or just keep the flame burning for those winding down.
Iwade Four-Team Challenge - Third Round 17th October
Q By Alan Turner The third, and penultimate, round of Iwade Speedway's 50(+1) Anniversary Celebrations took place on 17 October, with a cool breeze reminding everyone that in spite of the best intentions, this series had been obliged to focus action at the back end of the speedway season. Riders reported the track 'rode differently'. Apparently a recent flat-track day had packed the surface and riders were initially finding more grip than expected. 6
This stage of the four team competition had the London Celts matched against the Iwade 50+1 teams and Foxy's Golden Greats versus the Stryder Riders. There had been some necessary re-juggling with team members as all but one of the teams were a rider down. Nevertheless, it was an afternoon of good racing with previous Iwade form slightly skewed as some riders did better under the different conditions, others less so. Inevitably, there were a few 'comings to grief' but in spite of a couple of heavy contacts with the boards, everyone will be ready to race another day. In the A competition, Ben and Darren Phillips, riding for Iwade, contributed a fine 23 points between them with solid backing from the rest of the team. London Celts sorely missed the experience of Rob Ledwith and Nathan Hargrave's 10 points from six rides represented the best of their efforts. Rob Holllingworth put his years of experience to use with a dominant 15 points, ably backed by Mick Skinner's 12, putting the Golden Greats on 56 and firmly in front of an under strength Stryder
