Back to normal? Does that mean that trials sec's can stand behind a table and answer questions like, "how hard is the middle route?" or, "I'm still a novice what route should I do?". With entries on the day returning you had the delights of riders presenting £20 notes for a £17 entry which meant several trips to the burger van to ask for change ( often refused )! Another touch of hard work was reading entry forms usually with the help of an Egyptologist! Back in the 70's there were no late entries, you had to get your entry in before the closing date or "hard luck". What I sometimes used to do ( not with ACU approval ) was to ask any cheeky late arrivals to hang on until all the riders had left the start and then offer the latecomer the number of a non-starter. I hasten to add here that I would always return the nonstarters entry fee as a measure of goodwill! Not the ideal way to carry on I know but it got the latecomer a ride, today riders look out of the window on Sunday morning and decide to enter on the day, it adds to the clubs funds I know but a local club once had over 40 entries on the day at one of their events, very time consuming. I don't know if motocross clubs have the same trouble, perhaps you are thinking "miserable old person".

Having said all that when all the riders had got their numbers Cor' that was a relief!
OCTOBER 2021
On the subject of observers, I think offering them a free burger or whatever and a drink from the burger van is a good idea. I don't usually partake in that as my wife would tell me off for not eating her Sunday roast when I return home! For the person who has to arrange the observers, good luck, come on lads and lasses please help out at least once a year. I do think that in the future many clubs will have to combine for perhaps a day to help with all the organising, not just for observers but helping to lay out the course, we are luck in the South Midland centre to have several keen helpers, you all know who I mean, many thanks for that!

since he was around 5 years old and it hit him hard when he realised he may never ride again, the next best thing was for him to pit crew for me and Jonny. So we decided that if Dean couldn't ride we'd put a few laps in on his behalf..
Dean's always been a loved and respected rider so it was hardly a surprise when what started out as "three men in a van" turned out to be 14 riders a dozen vans and an entourage of about 50! It was great to see Dev there with a
big grin chuffed to bits with the turn out, great racing and a cheeky acknowledging smile that it must have been a lap scorers nightmare. Cracking on cracking on.

NMCC September Motocross at Long Buckby
Q By Fraser Law Photos: motoxphotos.co.uk September at Long Buckby can be a difficult month for motocross. After a long dry summer the hillside track has in the past proved difficult to water and prepare, with water often in short supply. This year however was all different. crew meant the circuit was in prime condition, with watering going on late into Saturday night. Sunday morning brought a couple of welcome rain showers that left the track perfect all day. In the Expert class Thomas Allsopp took a well deserved overall win after some close battles with Shaun Robinson. The Experts combined with the Junior A group for the afternoon finals. Jamie Richmond who's been on fire this year in the Junior class showed exactly why he'll be heading to the Expert Class next season. Jamie took clear wins in both races, well ahead of the Experts as well as his Junior opposition. George Cox was also not afraid to mix it up with the Expert riders, taking a
great second place overall and a good haul of Expert points. Tyler Etheridge finished in third place both times out. In the Junior B finals Lee Hayward and Josh Ford both took wins, top step of the podium going to Josh after Lee finished slightly further back in race two. Russell Diggin took two consistent thirds, and with that a not surprising third overall. As usual the South East EVO series put on a fine display of both immaculate EVO bikes, and fast racing. The sound and smell of the 2 strokes proving very popular with spectators. Steve Bixby was on unstoppable form, cruising to a hattrick of wins. Brett Fisher took second each time, with Jason Morland taking third overall after securing that
position in both the afternoon races. In the Premier O40 Ryan Griffiths took the overall by a single point after some close racing with James Berrill. Dale Philips finished inside the top four all day to secure third overall. Tony Leishman for a change proved unbeatable in the Elite Over 50 class, winning every race despite the best efforts of Jason Morettes who got closed in a few times. Third overall, and in each race went to Greg Cox. Three fine wins saw Stephen Hollins take the Super O60 class in style. Simon Tucker tied on points with Ross Dover for second, taking the place by virtue of a higher placed finish in race three. Continued overleaf 27

South Midland Classic Trial Graham Palmer
Q By Mick Clarkson Photos by Gary Dowzall slider.photography The South Midland Classic Trial this year was the twentieth running of the event and attracted an entry of ninety riders on a wide range of machinery. Heavy rain and thunder storms were predicted all day but fortunately did not materialise. Consequently, the three lap course of fifteen sections was laid out accordingly and some scores were low. It did encourage some riders to hurry, just in case the rain arrived. Section 12's greasy gully proved to be a challenge for both routes and took the majority of the marks. Gary Baker on his immaculate 199cc Triumph Cub repeated his 2018 win beating Richard Allen by just three marks. Richard Allen was riding his very tidy newly built 350cc Velocette.
