A happy New Year to everyone, the return, if only in a limited way, of all disciplines is good news, let's hope we can see a return to our old ways very soon.

Not very nice to see the nasty cut to Alicia Robinson's hand sustained in the Southern experts trial. I'm sure by now it will have healed well, have a great 2021 season lass!

Editor

In this new year we at TSM are looking forward to more write ups from riders restoring machines and more reports of events in all disciplines. Don't worry about grammar etc.. Andy can sort that out! Funny happenings are also good, so dig out some and let's have a laugh and lighten our mood.

Interesting to read that James Dabill has retired from professional trials, we all enjoyed seeing him at one of Jack Lee's training days some years ago at Round Rocket in Bucks: A nice chap, let's hope he will still be seen on the UK trials scene.

Did everyone see in TMX the vacancy for a "full time experienced motocross mechanic", what a job, I 'spose I am a bit old for that now (audience laughs)! I would think you would have to be really dedicated to motocross to be capable of that, probably working at night and driving many miles to events both here and abroad, good luck to whoever gets the job.

Good to read about the antics of South Americans competing in races there. The Brazilian race had three thousand competitors, I wonder what signing on was like! Fifty five kilometres through the jungle, many on the most popular bike a Honda CG 125, good luck there chaps. The TMX a week before had a report of another event in Bolivia, again with the CG 125 being the most popular bike, they are used during the week for delivering bread. Probably best not to mention there were also some Chinese bikes! The article in TMX on the enduro CCM made comment on the bikes right hand gear change. Whilst working for the "constabulary" I rode and worked on both BMW's and also Norton Commandos. One day I road tested both a BM and also a Norton one after another. Of course the gear change was on the left on the German bike and the Norton on the right. When about to turn into a roundabout I stood on the Norton's brake instead of the gear change. Oh dear, I thought I am going to fall off a police bike. Luckily, I don't know how but the sudden braking and slide was only a heart stopping moment and I arrived back at the workshop shaken but not stirred! A happy New Year to you all and keep sending the articles and reports.Â

Two Sidcup Trials Over Two Weeks in January – Hopefully!

Q  By Peter Burrell

The Sidcup Sixty Trial will be on its usual mid-January date, followed by the 2020 Jack Thompson Classic Bikes Trial two weeks later. The 84th Sixty in 2021 – 17th January Entries opened on 27th December and as usual, it's open to all solo classes from Expert to Novice, both Adult and Youth. The 2019 Sixty filled up in two weeks, so by the time your TSM drops through your letter box, the trial could be well on the way to being full!

The Sidcup Sixty has been held every year since 1933, except for the war years of 1939 to 1944 and petrol rationing in 1947. Winners of the huge Youngs Cup have included International stars like Ted Usher, Gordon Jackson, Gordon Farley, Ben Wibberley and Sam Connor. The most number of wins goes to Ashley Newbery with eleven between 1990 and 2016. 8

Winning bikes have ranged from Levis, Grindley Peerless, through Matchless, Ariel, Triumph, Greeves, Fantic, Bultaco, to Gas Gas and Beta. JIm Connor looked through some of his old scrapbooks and unearthed these reports showing some former winners in action. Pictures here In 1937, the sidecars started first on a very wet day and churned up the sections. Bill Peacock lost the least number of points of all riders, solo and sidecar, so won the Youngs Cup – the only time a sidecar rider has won. The trial has started from many different places including Wrotham, Heathfield, Flimwell, Dartford and the "Bull at Birchwood" near Swanley. Since 1967 the start has been Canada Heights and the entire event has been on Canada Heights for 25 years or so. During the recent months of inactivity, I have put as many results as I have on the Sidcup website. Some results are complete, some incomplete and some missing altogether. If any reader has any programmes and/or results from

has entered this year and could make it four those years, I would love to have or borrow them. Please phone me on 020 8300 5572 or in a row, having won from 2017 to 2019. Bob Onley is now the only rider to have 07885 682647 or email peter@sidcupmcc.co.uk. ridden all 30 Jack Thompson Trials, and The 31st Jack Thompson – 31st January has entered this year. Joan Westbrook and Eighty riders entered before it was necessary to George Smith have missed just one year, postpone the Jack Thompson from December and no less than 692 riders have ridden to January. We chose the 31st January as the new date as it was to be the date for the Talmag in one or more trials over the 30 years. Results of all 30 Jack Thompson Trials are Trophy Trial. on the Sidcup website, but while I am writing, Entries will re-open on 10th January and may I make an appeal for programmes and/ hopefully some Talmag riders will enter to or results for the Simmons Cup Trial (now enjoy the Jack Thompson at Canada Heights. named the Dick Dickenson Trial). Results for Sixteen riders have won the unique trophy this trial is also on the Sidcup website, but in previous years. Still the most successful is with quite a few missing or incomplete. the late Len Hutty with six wins. Philip Wiffen

The Sidcup Sixty Trial

Q  By Chris Baddeley Sidcup Trials Secretary

This is the first round of the South East Championship for 2021 and what a fantastic trial this is with all the best riders coming from all over the South East to try and win this prestigious event. We have over hundred riders from all classes coming to Canada Heights to battle it out! There will be a catering van on site selling tea and coffee as well as that all-important burger and chips. We also have toilets and easy parking for cars and vans alike. Entries for this event will fill up quickly so riders don't delay get your entries in fast. At this point in time I don't know if spectators will be allowed or even if the event is able to run because of the government rules on covid 19. Like us all I have to be positive so fingers crossed!

Colin Bowdidge was the pick of the C route runners, Twinshocker Mike Jarrett had the second best score despite several uncharacteristic fives. Youth C riders Adam Kilbey and Dan Cosser both put in excellent performances in difficult conditions. Chris Brown and Mike Hann were the top D Route runners, Brown finishing ahead of Sharon Youngman in the main class whilst Hann was top twinshock just ahead of spring partner John Foot. Steve Barratt was the clear Pre65 winner halving the score of Andy Withers who lost twenty two on the last lap.
