Darrow grew up in the Los Angeles area, but made the trek to visit family in Montana every year. She and her husband, David, made the choice to move to Liberty Lake in 2018, where they wanted to raise their two children.

It was interesting to see how different councils handled their issues, Darrow said. “It just gave me a little perspective of what other people are doing,” she said.

She said she doesn’t have an agenda and is only interested in listening and learning. She said she expects the city’s budget will drive a lot of the council’s decisions and said she favors getting information directly from the subject matter experts.

“There’s a lot of us who are new,” she said. “I like to ask questions.”

Darrow said she doesn’t see herself as a new idea person.

Instead, she’s more likely to suggest looking at something from a new angle or offer new solutions.

While in California she held several different jobs, including as a freelance writer and a director’s assistant. She now works as an office manager for a fuel and lubricant company in Spokane Valley. Along the way, however, she also started doing consulting, mostly having to do with web sites, creative work and editing.

She also said she doesn’t like how politics, including at the city council level, has devolved into an “us vs. them” fight. “I don’t fall into an us or a them,” she said. “I work well with others. I’m kind of a mediator at times. I’m hoping this group has a really positive dynamic.”

“I’ve tried to define it a million times, but it’s just kind of my side hustle thing,” she said. “I became sort of a retainered consultant.”

When Liberty Lake announced the creation of the Community Engagement Commission in 2021, Darrow saw it as a way to be involved in the community and applied. “I had a lot of encouragement,” she said.

She said she hopes her varied experience will help inform her decision making. “I’m looking forward to this,” she said. “I really am. I’ve become a fan of our city council and I’m really happy I get to participate.”

She was named the vice chair early on and now serves as the chair. “Community engagement wasn’t totally defined at first,” she said. “It was pretty vague. To me, the most exciting thing has been advising city council.”

Q: What do you most enjoy about living in Liberty Lake?

A: Liberty Lake is an awesome place to live. I really love the pride we have in our city. It shows in the way we celebrate holidays the Fourth of July is my favorite; the golf cart parade, the fireworks & people gathering in the parks.

I’m also really looking forward to Christmas and the new “Home for the Holidays” event this year.

Q: How would you describe your work on the Community Engagement Commission?

A: The Community Engagement Commission is present at community events, advises City Council on issues involving Community Engagement (Town Hall Meetings, the City’s Satisfaction Survey, etc).

The CEC has people from different professional backgrounds, of different ages and with different ideas, but we always seem to come together and build thoughtfully on anything we hear from the public or are tasked with.

Q: What made you decide to run for a city council seat?

A: Civic Duty is a big deal to me.

I love living in Liberty Lake and I want to do my part to preserve the good here and influence positive progress. I’ve been interested in local government since I was a kid, serving as a Student Body President in Sixth Grade, working on numerous City/ Public Access media projects as a teen and young adult, making phone calls, knocking on doors and deep diving into local, state and federal issues as an adult, but I always told myself I would only run if asked. I have no problem volunteering myself for things, but wanted to feel like I wasn’t just doing this for myself; I’m doing it for everyone who doesn’t have the time, interest or ability.

Also, I’m kind of a nerd and I like City Council meetings, for the lively discussions, debate and group problem solving.

Q: Do you have any goals once you take your seat on the council?

A:My goal is to bring people together over issues that cause contention. Although there have been factions before, I hope we can come together when it matters - since government at this level is non-partisan and there is a lot to be learned by looking at a challenge through a lens other than your own.

Do you believe the city needs a new library?

I love our library and I would love a big modern library with lots of parking and a ton more books, but I want to be very clear that whether I want something, personally or not, my job as a city council member is to listen to the citizens to the best of my ability and although it wasn’t a landslide, the majority spoke

against pursuing funding & construction of a new library/ community center.

The vote came about very quickly and an argument could be made that there was not enough information about where the funding would come from or other unknowns. Certainly, pushing forward without the majority of the community’s approval is not the best path. So, it’s either back to the drawing board or new exploration of a project with more Community Support.

The Liberty Lake City Council adopted the city’s $32.84 million 2026 budget and an $11.56 million updated six-year Capital Facilities Plan at meetings in early December, with the latter completely eliminating a project receiving strong support from a segment of city residents — a new or renovated and expanded municipal library.

Several years in the planning and funding stages, the library project began 2025 with almost $7 million in potential assets that included the former Legacy Church building a couple blocks east on East Mission of the library’s current location, purchased in 2022 for $2.175 million and designated at the time for use as the expanded library. Those assets also included a $937,000 state Department of Commerce grant to be used only for library work and a city set aside of $3.99 million in funding in the Library Capital Fund.

But beginning in November 2024, the council, led by former members Chris Cargill, Mike Kennedy, Jed Spencer and Wendy Van Orman, began dismantling that funding, first by declining to pursue the library expansion project, leading to the Department of Commerce to pull its grant approval in May. In February, the council — particularly Kennedy and Cargill

advisory vote on the Nov. 4 ballot.

The exact language of the measure was: “Should the City pursue the funding and construction of a new community center and library in the City of Liberty Lake?”

By a 55% to 45% margin, voters said no.

Well before advisory vote ballots were mailed, however, the council approved a $428,398 contract in early September with Tacoma design firm BCRA, Inc. for City Hall renovation design services — a project moving the existing City Hall to the Legacy Church building purchased for the library. The council originally set a $5 million target for the City Hall renovations, a figure that hit almost $6 million when BCRA presented preliminary design plans in October.

In an update on design work at the council’s Dec. 16 meeting, BCRA representatives and city staff said they were working to keep the figure under $6 million as much as possible.

After citizens rejected the combined library and community center in November, the $3.99 million of city funding was transferred from the Library Capital Fund to a fund to be used for City Hall renovations. City staff subsequently moved the library and community center project further out on the city’s Capital Facilities Plan project list, estimating costs at $14 million, but only mentioning

eliminating the project completely.

A motion by Cargill at the Dec. 2 meeting to change the project name to “new library, location to be determined” and cap costs at $10 million passed 4-2, with council members Annie Kurtz and Linda Ball voting no.

With Van Orman’s resignation from council in October, many motions failed on a 3-3 vote, including motions to terminate the project. With the selection of Hugh Severs to fill Van Orman’s remaining term at Position 7, council again took up the Capital Facilities Plan at its Dec. 16 meeting.

At the meeting, confusion occurred after staff presented two separate ordinances for adopting the plan — one with the library on the list and one with it removed.

Eventually, council voted 4-3, with Severs joining Cargill, Kennedy and Spencer, to approve the ordinance removing the library completely and adopting the final plan.

Throughout this process, Cargill, Kennedy and Spencer repeatedly justified their decision to kill the library project by noting “voters had spoken” in the advisory vote, although what voters actually voted on in November was a combination library and community center, not a library only.

“Anything beyond 2026 will likely be revisited as part of that process,” Key wrote.

In adopting the 2026 budget, council approved a budget that has seen steady growth in the city’s General Fund expenses over the past four years. In 2023, the total city budget was just over $23.94 million, almost evenly split between the General Fund and the total of all other funds.

The budget dipped to just over $19.94 million in 2024, mainly from significant completion of the Trailhead Improvement Project, but saw an increase in the General Fund of over $400,000. In 2025, the budget jumped to over $35.1 million, again almost evenly split between a $17.34 million General Fund and $17.76 million in all other funds, including the $3.99 million for the library expansion.

The adopted 2026 budget includes almost $19.34 million in General Fund expenses and $13.5 million in all other funds. The reduction comes partly through elimination of the library expansion project, with some of that money now being used for the City Hall renovation project in the location of the former proposed library, with construction slated to begin early in 2026.

The General Fund also shows a beginning year balance of almost $8.3 million and almost $13.65 million in anticipated revenues.

With $19.34 million in expenses, staff anticipates ending 2026 with just over $2 million in the fund.

Community garden reservations open Jan. 2

The City of Liberty Lake will begin taking its 2026 reservations starting on Jan. 2 for the community garden sites at Rocky Hill Park (24901 E. Mission Ave.) and the Nature’s Place at Meadowwood Arboretum (along the path east of City Hall). Reservations will open online on Friday, Jan. 2, at 8 a.m. Residents may also use the online kiosk at City Hall. Thoughts, Reflections, and Hope from 2025 to 2026

A new year is often seen as a new beginning, a chance to start fresh, full of hope and renewed energy. But it is also a time to look back and reflect on the prior year, to recognize the challenges we experienced and the accomplishments we were able to achieve. We checked in with a few of our fellow community members to hear their thoughts and reflections on 2025 and what they are looking forward to in 2026! Here is what they had to say: Reflecting on a year of loss, love, and new beginnings As 2025 comes to a close, it brings with it a moment to pause and reflect on a year marked by both heartache and hope. The loss of dear friends and family cast long shadows, reminding us how precious and fragile our connections truly are. Yet even in grief, life offered moments of profound joy. This year welcomed a beautiful new granddaughter, along with twin great-niece and great-nephew, bright reminders that new chapters continue to unfold.

Amid the highs and lows, time spent with good friends provided comfort, laughter, and grounding.

These shared moments became some of the year’s greatest gifts.

Looking ahead, 2026 promises a season of renewal. With retirement on the horizon, there is excitement for deeper community service through Rotary, the Liberty Lake Police Foundation,

and continued work with the Spokane Valley Fire Department.

There is also a renewed commitment to family, friendships, and exploring the world with fresh curiosity.

If 2025 taught anything, it is that life’s journey is unpredictable, but always worth embracing. And with gratitude and purpose guiding the way, the coming year holds much to look forward to.

As we reflect on 2025, our citizens and fire department can both be proud of a year defined by service, growth, and resilience. Our firefighters and support staff responded to thousands of calls and requests for service while continuing to strengthen emergency medical services (EMS), wildfire preparedness, and community risk reduction efforts. We invested in training, equipment, and partnerships that directly enhance public safety, and we did so with a strong focus on fiscal responsibility and accountability to the community we serve.

Looking ahead to 2026, our focus remains clear: readiness, people, and prevention. We will continue to modernize operations, recruit and retain exceptional professionals, and expand proactive programs that reduce our community’s risk before emergencies occur.

Wildfire mitigation, EMS system sustainability, and workforce development will remain top priorities as our community continues to grow and evolve.

2025 was a challenging year. As a country, we navigated economic uncertainty, political tension, and so much rapid change it felt like the world hit “update” without asking first. Still, beneath the noise and headlines, resilience still showed up. People adapted. Communities stepped in.

Conversations

Looking ahead to 2026, I’m cautiously optimistic. It will bring surprises, some good, some will be challenging. While I can’t fix the world, I can control how I show up in it. I can support my community, choose civility over conflict, and treat people with respect, even when we disagree. Kindness isn’t complicated, it’s just a choice. And it’s one worth making.

As we reflect on the year now behind us, 2025 was a strong and meaningful year for the City of Liberty Lake. Our community continued to grow not only through infrastructure, but in thoughtful ways, balancing progress with the values that make this city such a desirable place to live, work, and raise a family.

The foundation laid over the past year positions Liberty Lake for continued stability, opportunity, and community pride. With careful planning and continued collaboration, the coming year promises to be just as bright as the one we leave behind.

Liberty Lake has much to be proud of, even more to look forward to, and as American essayist, lecturer, philosopher, minister, abolitionist, and poet Ralph Waldo Emerson once said, “Write it on your heart that every day is the best day in the year."

When I look back on 2025, the first thing that stands out is my team.

In a year filled with change and new beginnings, the people around you truly make the difference. This past year marked the first full year of Numerica’s presence in the Liberty Lake community, and I am proud of how our team showed up for the neighbors and members we serve.

Although I have been with Numerica for eight years and worked in several branches, this was my first time helping open a location in a brand new community.

Building trust, learning local needs, and forming meaningful connections came with challenges, but also with rewarding moments.

One that stands out was seeing the ear to ear smiles on kids’ faces when the community showed up with dozens of trucks and tractors at Touch a Truck. Moments like that are a powerful reminder of the impact we can have when we come together and how much it means to be part of this community.

As we head into 2026, I am excited to continue growing alongside my team and deepening our connection to Liberty Lake.

Outside of work, I am looking forward to more time outdoors, tackling a few house projects, and maybe finally fitting in a golf lesson or two.

On 11/17/2025, a female suspect was detained at Yokes for attempting to steal alcohol.

She has stolen from the store at least 11 times in the past month.

She was cited and released.

Additionally, three vehicle prowls and one residential burglary occurred. There was no surveillance or witnesses available for these incidents.

There were multiple reports of people attempting to steal packages off the residential porches. Officers are continuing to make proactive contact with any suspicious vehicles seen throughout the community that may be looking for easy targets. The Liberty Lake Police Department would like to remind everyone to attempt to secure your packages as soon as possible during this holiday season. Try to have deliveries made to an occupied home or provide instructions to keep them out of the public view.

It has been a very productive year for Trailbreaker Cider as we ventured into our first expansion within the Spokane region, and opened our new taproom in River Park Square.

We are reminded of the hard work ahead of ourselves in these challenging economic times, but also of the progress we’ve made as we approach our 7th year of operation in Liberty Lake. We love being part of our community and that connection continues to be such a big part of our focus and energy. The rendezvous for the suffragists was lavishly decorated in yellow pennants, the main color of the movement, along with American flags.

Hutton and Baker were intent on making Camp Equality a missionary camp for the dissemination of the suffrage gospel. A rally was held the first Sunday after they opened the camp.

Members of suffrage clubs and friends of the cause showed up in support with picnic baskets in tote to spend the day enjoying a program of speeches and informal talks. The College Equal Suffrage Club of Spokane, whose 250 members vowed to convert their suitors to women’s rights before entering upon engagement, was largely represented.

Their battle cry of “No Vote No Husband,” could be heard throughout the camp.

Hutton was politically savvy; her approach as a suffragist was to be persuasive not militant. After butting heads with the state’s westside leadership, whom she saw as antagonists, she founded her own statewide organization. In addition to bolstering support for the cause, they used the camp to plan a campaign that would reach every county in the state.

After Washington women gained the right to vote in 1910, Hutton received praise for her ability and the tact with which she carried out her part of the campaign.

The campaign for women’s suffrage in the state of Washington was pivotal in women gaining the right to vote in the United States. It revitalized the suffrage movement nationally being the first state to grant the right in almost 15 years.

Falcon volleyball returns to state, lands fifth-place

It’s a difficult thing to repeat as a champion in any sport, and especially high school sports where graduation can take its toll on good teams.

The Ridgeline volleyball team found that out this year — and made the best of it by returning to the 3A state tournament at Yakima’s SunDome where they brought home more hardware with a fifth-place finish. For head coach Whitney Abell, it was a notable achievement given the toll graduation took on the 2024 state championship squad.

“Placing fifth out of over 70 teams in the state of Washington after losing over half of our state championship roster is proof of the competitive drive of this year’s team to show up, work hard and be better every point,” Abell said.

Seeded seventh, Ridgeline opened with a 3-0 win over Bishop Blanchet, an opponent they faced last year in their title run. The Falcons had a statement match, winning 25-16, 25-20 and 25-10 to advance to the quarterfinals where they faced a familiar foe — fellow Greater Spokane League 3A rival Mt. Spokane.

The Falcons will lose a pair of seniors who have played important roles in the team’s success and program’s development over the past four years: libero/defensive specialist Jade Livingston and outside hitter/ middle blocker Lizzy O’Connell. Abell said Livingston has over 1,100 digs in her career, with O’Connell recording almost 550 career kills and over 70 blocks.

“Lizzy and Jade have brought consistency, encouragement, inspiration, momentum changing plays when we’ve needed them most, and have most definitely left a legacy within the Ridgeline volleyball program,” Abell said.

Because of this and last year’s title successes, the Falcons have seen over 80 girls tryout for the program, leading to the creation of five teams. Abell also credited programs at Ridgeline’s feeder middle schools for the success as well, noting they do “a great job of encouraging kids to be competitive, good teammates.”

This, along with the fact the Falcons

should return seven juniors and a pair each of sophomores and freshmen, all with state experience, has Abell eager for next year.

“We have a lot of talent coming through our program,” she said. “It’s so exciting to get to summer season to see the growth of the girls from the club volleyball experience, volleyball camps or even playing at our local parks with friends.”

Boys basketball With half of the 12 member Falcons team consisting of sophomores, the Ridgeline boys hoops team will be experiencing some of the challenges of a young and growing squad this year.

Three seniors and three juniors also suit up: led by seniors Caden Andres, Matthew Ehlers and Cameron Gardner.

Andres leads the team in scoring so far, averaging 23.5 points per game with Ehlers second at 11.8 ppg.

Girls basketball Head coach Freddie Rehkow’s squad is 6-2 overall, with both losses in games that went to overtime: 78-73 at home against GSL 4A Gonzaga Prep on Dec. 2 and 54-53 to Wasilla, Alaska on Dec. 19 in that school’s annual Doc Larson Roudball Classic. The Falcons also notched wins over Alaska teams the Bartlett Golden Bears, 71-40, and the Barrow Whalers, 71-42.

Ridgeline is led by seniors Madilyn Crowley and Kate Taylor along with junior Grace Sheridan. Crowley and Sheridan are currently tied for the scoring lead, with both averaging 17.8 ppg.

Head coach Nick Seaman notes that young group of players has a lot of experience, seeing that as a team strength along with an effective fullcourt pressure defense.

Rounding out the team is its youth component — seven freshmen, led by starters Noelia Axton (10.8 ppg) and Makinley Simmelink. Gigi Wimberley, Juliette Peacock, Emma Goldstein, Kalia Blanchard and Natalie Rose also make contributions coming off the bench.

So far, the Falcons have yet to enter GSL play and are 3-4 overall. Their wins have seen them score 60 or more points while the losses have been mostly in the

Bounced to the consolation bracket, Ridgeline faced off against third-seeded Lakes, winning a hard-fought, five-set match 25-20, 16-23, 25-20, 12-25 and 1614.

“They took us to a fifth set, a place we thrive and have not lost in a fifth set in three years,” Abell said.

The win landed Ridgeline in the match for fifth and sixth against Central Kitsap where the Falcons had an easier time of it, winning 3-0.

“We ended with a win on the 2025 season, something the majority of teams in the state do not get to do,” Abell said.

Ridgeline senior, Alexis Vanhook has been apart of the Ridgeline Yearbook program all four years she has been at Ridgeline and has been the Editor and Chief for the past two years. Vanhook originally moved to the Liberty Lake area during her 8th grade year and has found her passion in Bio Medicine at Ridgeline. While maintaining a 4.0 GPA Vanhook has taken numerous Advanced Placement classes including AP Government, AP Statistics, and AP Language Composition. Alexis is also apart of the HOSA Club (an international student organization for those interested in healthcare careers) and competes in their Forensics competitions as well as their Medical Terminology Test. Outside of studies, Alexis enjoys participating in the Ridgeline Tennis team where she plays doubles. After graduation Alexis plans to go to Washington State University to be apart of their school newspaper while studying Bio Chemistry and Pre Med before going on to become a Doctor and hopes to practice Emergency Medicine or possibly some sort of surgery.

Ridgeline line swim team brothers Ethan and Liam Gingras should have been born with fins. Practicing swim 8 times a week year-round the pair are frequently found practicing at the Spokane Valley YMCA, the Airway Heights Rec Center, and the Eastern Washington University Pool in Cheney. Ethan is a senior at Ridgeline and his brother Liam is a Sophomore; both maintaining a 4.0 GPA. While the Ridgeline swim team is only in their second year, Ethan placed 5th and 6th last year in the State for the 200-yard individual medley and the 100-yard back stroke respectively.

Liam placed 10th and 15th at state in the 50 yard and 100-yard freestyle. Both brothers have been swimming since they were five years old. Outside the pool Ethan serves on the Ronald McDonald House Teen Board and actively volunteers at the house each month. After high school Ethan plans to swim at the college level and has pledged to Chapmen University in Orange County, California where he plans to pursue a Bio Chemistry / Molecular Biology degree before attending Medical School and becoming a Pediatrician.

Michelle Darais is a wonderful example of what it looks like to live with a heart for the community. Known for her warmth, inclusivity, and genuine care for others, she consistently shows up to serve in meaningful ways.

She played a major role in the planning and execution of the Liberty Creek Fall Carnival, helping create a fun, welcoming event that brought families together and strengthened the school community. Beyond large events, Michelle is known for noticing the small things—welcoming trick-or-treaters with hot cocoa, setting out snacks for delivery drivers during the holidays, and helping new residents feel immediately at home.

Michelle serves in the PTO at two schools and previously served as Stake Primary President for her church, supporting children and families across multiple congregations. Through her kindness, reliability, and quiet leadership, she helps make Liberty Lake a warmer, more connected community.

Summer bash raised funds for area athletics

How far would you travel to feast at a tender, juicy beef BBQ on a gorgeous summer day at a beautiful lake . . . where entertainment and activities were endless . . . where fellow guests shared your passions and included friends, acquaintances, and often, professional athletes?

This was the annual Athletic Round Table’s summertime Christmas party at Liberty Lake!

Spokane’s fun-loving Athletic Round Table, led by Joe Albi, started the annual Christmas party as a gag in 1937 at Hayden Lake. But the gag turned out to be a whopping success.

And the following year, it flourished once again—and for many years thereafter—at Liberty Lake. The Spokane Daily Chronicle reported that at 1938’s party, “Every one of the 1,200 persons, 15 ducks, a pig, a shetland pony and a nondescript dog, had a whale of a time.” They were also well-fed, consuming around 700 pounds of barbequed meat plus other picnic items.

A.R.T.’s summertime Christmas party became known as a rolling snowball gathering weight that could not be stopped. The Christmas parties were exclusive to A.R.T. members and their wives or lady friends as well as specially invited guests. Some years the club hosted out-of-town groups such as the contestants and officials of the national Public Links Tournament when it was held at Indian Canyon in 1941. The 1942 Christmas party kicked off a week-long social schedule honoring golfers in the Western Golf Association championships playing at Manito Golf and Country Club.

In 1948 Spokane hosted the national Affiliated Advertising Agencies’ annual meeting which strategically played into A.R.T.’s hands as several invited national advertising representatives became their perfect publicity opportunity.

He accepted the invitation to come to the summer Christmas party along with, according to the Spokesman Review, “five tons of ravenous professional football players” (Redskins teammates), an entourage of Washington D.C. newspaper correspondents, and the Round Table’s softball team. That year the A.R.T. cuisine director added two extra-fat steers to the 10 fat ones they ordinarily served to their now typical headcount of 2,000. The 12 steers of tender beef filled a 10 foot deep by 30 foot long pit and then were roasted for 48 hours “to a savory tenderness.”

(The pit reportedly expanded later to only 8 feet deep but 60 feet long.) The seven-course dinner was served off long tables set up on the lawn in front of the Dance Pavillion which jutted out over the water at the Liberty Lake Park. Albi once quipped that, “The Dance Pavillion and most of the lake front has been reserved for the 2,000

or more guests that are expected...The crowd will be able to splash gravy for miles around...and we’re going to have plenty of gravy.”

Former owner and president of the Redskins, George Preston Marshall, graced the shores of Liberty Lake for a summer A.R.T. Christmas party, and Turk Edwards returned a few years later and was targeted for fattening up after he’d dropped 25 pounds from his normal 300-pound frame.

• Joe Albi was founder and “the everand-forever” 42-year president of the A.R.T. It was a fun-loving fundraising group that targeted the expansion of sports in the Spokane area. The stadium project they funded was named Memorial Stadium in 1950, but it was renamed Joe Albi Stadium in 1962, just a few weeks before Albi died of Lou Gehrig’s disease.

The A.R.T. brought more than $6.5 million into Spokane to promote athletic events and scholarships.

Though talking politics was taboo at the parties, they did spotlight a “medicine show” featuring politicians (including a U.S. Senatorial candidate and a governor) who promised anything and everything.

Entertainment was provided by singers, orchestras and dance bands including the locally-loved Dutch Groshoff Band. In 1948 the Christmas crowd enjoyed the Chicagoland Music Festival competition winner,

One interesting story came from 1948 when the Athletic Round Table was trying to raise money to build a $750,000 outdoor stadium in Spokane. They’d already donated $250,000 to be matched by other clubs and civic organizations. Then the famous crooner Bing Crosby, a Round Table member himself, visited his hometown Spokane and he became very enthusiastic about the stadium project. He worked with A.R.T. leaders to finalize details to help raise funds: Crosby would return in September with his Hollywood troupe and his famous radio show, Bing Crosby’s Philco Hour, would be taped live on stage at Spokane’s beautiful downtown Post Theater. He would put on two shows—the first an informal matinee/rehearsal, and the second, a “gala affair” that evening to be transcribed for radio broadcast.

All proceeds from both shows would be donated to the stadium fund.

This announcement was made to a cheering crowd at the 12th annual A.R.T. Christmas party at Liberty Lake, the one coincidentally attended by the national Affiliated Advertising Agencies’ representatives. It was a huge boost for the stadium fund as well as provided highly desirable publicity in the nation’s public eye.

The stadium became a reality two short years later; it was built in under four months.

This wild and crazy, civicallyminded A.R.T. group did many zany things to contribute to our area, but it has been said that the Round Tablers would rather lose an arm or a leg than to miss the annual Christmas party at Liberty Lake. party stopped for three years from 194345, possibly due to WWII. • Dutch Groshoff, a popular Spokane band leader, banjo player and entertainer, was well-known at Liberty Lake. He and his orchestra were featured on the national Philco Hour with his friend and schoolmate Bing Crosby when it was broadcast from the Post Theater in Spokane. Many years earlier in 1925, Groshoff had turned down an opportunity to accompany Bing in California.

Council selects Hugh Severs to fill open Position 7 seat

and interview process, the council selected former council member Hugh Severs at its Dec. 9 meeting to serve in the Position 7 chair vacated in October by the resignation of Councilwoman Wendy Van Orman. Van Orman resigned at the end of the Oct. 7 meeting, citing a desire to focus

on family and health as reasons for her departure.

Severs was selected from a pool of eight applicants for the position that included Robin Bekkedahl, Michael Willis, James Baumker, Kathryn Atkins, Judie Schumacher, Jacob Phillips and Abigail Sprague. Schumacher was a recent candidate for council in the Nov. 4 election, losing to Arlene Fisher for the Position 6 seat.

A Liberty Lake resident of 17 years, Severs was elected twice to council, the first time in 2013 and then again in 2017. He declined to run for a third term in 2021, citing a desire to focus more on his family.

“When I left council, I had a son entering high school and the other in middle school,” Severs wrote on his application. “My personal and professional lives were not in a great place for me to put my focus and efforts on the city as much as is deserved out of the Council position.”

The Splash With one son now at Washington State University and the other at Ridgeline High School, Severs said he felt the time was right to return to public service. He brings a bachelor of arts degree from WSU in landscape architecture and 15 years of experience as a financial advisor to the council.

“Having 8 years of prior experience as a Council Member, I know and understand the role and demands of the position and believe I come back today even more equipped than when I left the position at the end of 2021,” Severs wrote.

Severs also serves as a board member with the Spokane Valley HUB Sports Center and with the Greater Spokane Valley Chamber of Commerce, positions he wrote might create conflicts with serving on Liberty Lake’s council. In response to a question regarding that, Liberty Lake communications officer David Goehner said there was

“The proper role of city government is to serve the people,” Severs said in response to Councilman Jed Spencer’s question. “It’s clear and simple right there.”

Asked by Councilwoman Anne Kurtz about the most effective ways to gather public opinion on issues, Severs said such efforts were complex in nature and require time. He said the city’s use of online surveys was a good start, but it was important for council members to be in the community speaking to as many residents as possible.

In answering Councilwoman Linda Ball’s question about government’s role in emergency situations, Severs said public safety was the council’s number one priority, but would need to learn more to understand the relationships and interactions of the various agencies handling an emergency such as a wild land fire or windstorm.

“I view the council members to be a voice of the people,” he added.

Asked by Councilman Dan Dunne on what led him to want to serve on council again and the skills he brought, Severs pointed to what he wrote on his application, but added all of the council members were sitting in their seats for one reason.

Councilman Mike Kennedy asked how candidates would build consensus on issues, especially under strong public pressure and competing community interests. Severs said his approach would be to be a listener, and cited his previous stint on council.

“That we care,” he said. “We care about our community.

Ultimately, my driver is to come back and help bring cohesion to the council.”

“There were plenty of times we were all coming in with something at odds,” he said, adding his approach was to encourage constructive debate.

“I’m trying to listen for good viewpoints from other people,” he said. “I’m not coming in with my own opinion and saying it’s right and I’m going to get my way.”

Asked by Mayor Pro Tem Chris Cargill about a recent council decision he disagreed with, Severs cited the decision to continue to keep the proposed $10 million library and community center project on the city’s Capital Facilities Projects list, especially after voters declined to support the project via an advisory vote on the Nov. 4 ballot.

Severs acknowledged it was frustrating as he said he voted for the project, but added he doesn’t

After discussing all of the applicants in executive session, council returned and began the selection process with each member naming their top five candidates. From that list, council narrowed it to the top two – which was Severs and Schumacher.

In the end, Severs was selected 4-2, with all four councilmen voting for him while Kurtz and Ball voted for Schumacher.

Severs joins three candidates elected by voters to fill the seats of Cargill, Kennedy and Spencer – all of whom didn’t seek reelection. Besides Fisher, coming on council in January will be Summer Darrow, running unopposed for Position 2, and Rick Klingler, who defeated another former council member, Phil Folyer, for Position 4.

Severs will serve out the rest of Van Orman’s term through November, 2027, at which time he can decided to either step down or seek reelection.

"We’ve all told our kids “life isn’t fair.” Usually, it’s meant to help them deal with disappointment or understand that effort doesn’t always lead to the outcome they want.

Sometimes that phrase is taken the wrong way, like fairness doesn’t matter at all—or that life is inherently negative.

But fairness is far from irrelevant. Life isn’t always fair, but fairness still matters. It’s one of the things that helps people move through an imperfect world without feeling lost or bitter. Fairness doesn’t promise perfect results or smooth roads. It promises something simpler: clear rules, consistent expectations, and equal respect.

For me, fairness comes down to holding the same standards for everyone, even when it’s uncomfortable.

I see this most often at home.

With four kids, fairness is tested daily. Different ages, different personalities, and plenty of opinions about what’s “fair.” It would be easy to bend the rules just to keep the peace. I’ve learned that only creates confusion. Kids don’t need parents who change the rules depending on the day or the noise level. They need adults who follow through.

Fairness at home doesn’t mean every kid gets the same outcome.

It means the rules are clear and the expectations don’t change.

When kids know where the lines are, they feel more secure—even if they don’t love the result in the moment.

The same lesson shows up in sports, sometimes in surprising ways.

While coaching Little League baseball, our team found itself in a tough situation. Due to illness and injuries, we were only able to field eight players for a game.

meant an automatic out would be recorded when the ninth spot in the lineup came up, and then the batting order would continue as normal.

As straightforward as that rule was, several parents from the opposing team became irate.

They argued with the umpire and directed their frustration toward me, believing the automatic out should apply repeatedly to our leadoff batter, eliminating his chance to swing the bat after his first plate appearance. In other words, they wanted the rule to be applied incorrectly because it might help them win.

That moment stuck with me— not because of the pressure of the game, but because of what it revealed. When adults argue for a rule to be bent or misapplied for competitive advantage, fairness disappears. Winning replaces integrity, and kids are left watching adults model something far more important than the final score.

Sports work best when the rules are clear and applied evenly.

Fairness doesn’t guarantee a win or prevent disappointment.

It simply ensures that effort, opportunity, and accountability exist within the same boundaries for everyone involved.

That idea carries community life as well.

Whether it’s volunteering, working with parents and teachers, or helping lead organizations, fairness means resisting favoritism. It means making decisions based on principles, not relationships.

That’s not always comfortable.

Fairness can mean saying no, holding the line, or explaining a decision people don’t like. Over time, though, consistency builds trust—and trust is what holds communities together.

A fair system recognizes that choices matter. Effort matters.

Preparation matters. Fairness doesn’t promise equal results; it promises equal standards.

When responsibility disappears, expectations get fuzzy and accountability fades. People stop knowing what’s expected of them.

This is especially important for kids. Preparing them for adulthood doesn’t mean clearing every obstacle out of their way. It means helping them understand that actions have consequences and that consistency—both good and bad—is part of life. Fairness gives them something solid to stand on as they grow.

In my professional life, fairness shows up as stewardship. When people trust you with their time,

money, or future, fairness means being transparent, disciplined, and consistent. It means doing the same careful work whether a decision is big or small, popular or inconvenient. Trust grows when people know they’ll be treated the same tomorrow as they are today.

At the end of the day, fairness isn’t flashy. It doesn’t need new language or constant explanation.

It’s built quietly, over time— through parents who follow through, coaches who enforce the rules evenly, leaders who keep their word, and communities that value consistency.

Fairness isn’t about being perfect. It’s about doing the right thing, even when it’s harder.

In a world that often feels unpredictable, fairness matters more than ever.
