On Friday, September 24, Suffolk County Legislator Jim Mazzarella, joined with Brookhaven Town Supervisor Ed Romaine, Legislator Nick Caracappa, and Assemblyman Joe DeStefano with Ryan Stanton of the Long Island Federation of Labor, at Quality King Headquarters in Bellport.

They assembled with UFCW Local 2013 to rally for impacted workers and local community organizations, calling on Quality King, to end the culture of fear and intimidation and for its subsidiary, Perfumania, and to bargain for a fair contract with a living wage.

“We joined together to support the working men and women of UFCW Local 2013 in achieving a fair settlement of their contract with Quality King. A contract with reasonable pay increases and the promise of better working conditions,” stated Legislator Jim Mazzarella. “I would like to thank my colleagues

from the Suffolk County Legislature as well as our friends from the other levels of government for standing up for the rights of these workers.”

Currently, Local 2013 is in a contract fight with Perfumania Holdings, Inc. They are unwilling to fairly compensate the 80 workers at Perfumania. This particular division distributes designer fragrances to mass-market retailers, drug stores and other chain stores, retail wholesale clubs, traditional wholesalers, and other distributors. Perfumania has a large e-commerce presence through a company-owned website that specializes in the sale of fragrances and related products in the United States, Puerto Rico, and the US Virgin Islands.

Perfumania also sells its products in approximately 80 countries through a network of international distributors.

In Suffolk County, veterans may be eligible for numerous service related programs. Most notably is a reduction in their county, and sometimes town property taxes based on the type of service they rendered to their country in wartime.

Nick Caracappa Tours Suffolk County Farm in Yaphank Suffolk County Legislator Nick Caracappa was recently invited to tour the Suffolk County Farm in Yaphank, operated by Cornell Cooperative Extension (CCE). Caracappa’s colleague, Legislator Jim Mazzarella also attended.

According to CCE’s website, The Suffolk County Farm and Education Center’s mission is to provide handson research-based learning to all residents with themes in agriculture, animal sciences, history, STEM, healthy living, and life skills in a unique yearround learning environment and in community spaces. The Farm’s vision is to connect with the County’s agricultural heritage and to pave the way for a bright, healthy, and sustainable future.

Suffolk DA Sini Seeks 2nd Term Running Campaign for Re-election Based on Record

The reform and overhaul of the DA's Office which Sini referenced since taking office in January 2017, included hiring new talent comprised of over 100 individuals, investing "heavily" in technology which resulted in the rollout and implementation of a new Digital Case Management system, advanced DNA technology, a Phone Analytics System, and Drug Detection technology. "This was all done in an effort to keep reducing crime in Suffolk County, and to address the safety of our residents," Sini said. "We disseminated MS-13 which culminated in December 2019 with the largest MS-13 takedown in US History, resulting in 96 defendants being indicted in Suffolk County, and shared intelligence resulted in 300 arrests while preventing 10 murders in real time," Sini explained. The aggressive enforcement, Sini noted, led to the MS-13 gang halting their New York program. "Now, the goal is for them, (MS-13), not to reconstitute, " Sini added.

Suffolk County District Attorney Timothy D. Sini is running for election to a second four~year term. Sini will appear on the Democrat and Keep Crime Low lines of the ballot. He is being challenged by Ray Tierney who is making his first bid for election to public office.

When Sini made his inaugural run for the department's top seat four years ago, he navigated his campaign on the platform of reforming and restoring integrity to the Office of the District Attorney, and creating a culture of excellence, professionalism, and ethical conduct within the department. Since taking office, a number of initiatives aimed at increasing the public trust and safety have been implemented under Sini's leadership.

During an interview with Sini last week, the DA cited his record of hallmarks and highlighted accomplishments, coupled with his desire to continue reforming the office as reasons for seeking re-election.

Asked about highlights accomplished during his tenure to date, Sini said, "I took office on the heels of a major scandal where my predecessor, (former

Other of Sini's accomplishments include putting a lid on human traffickers, and cracking down on drug

dealers while increasing treatment for those who have fallen victim to opioids and other illegal substance addictions.

Citing crime statistics, Sini reported, "As (Suffolk County) Police Commissioner, and now as DA, overall crime is down by almost 30%." But while there was an uptick in gun violence in June and July, those numbers ratcheted down in August and September, according to Sini. "We're continuing focusing on gun control, and we created a Gun Suppression Unit where we're continuing to work with our partners in Local, County, State and Federal levels to prosecute criminals utilizing firearms," Sini explained.

On the docket for the next four years, Sini said his office will continue to prosecute gang members who have been committing violent crimes, and driving the drug epidemic down by holding drug dealers accountable.

"We're tasked to protect and serve the people of Suffolk County, " Sini said, " so we're going to continue our important work on crimes involving child abuse, and sex crimes."

Sini graduated Magna Cum Laude and earned his Juris Doctorate from Brooklyn Law School; and America

University in Washington, DC, where he received his Bachelor of Arts Degree in Political Science and a minor in Justice.

Sini is married with three children.

Prior to election as Suffolk County District Attorney, Sini served as Suffolk' County's 13th Police Commissioner (the 11th largest police department in the United States), and he is a former federal prosecutor. Sini was nominated for the office of President of the District Attorneys Association of New York, the results of which were pending at press time.

Ms. Palmore has worked for North Fork Housing Alliance, which serves low- and moderateincome residents in cooperation with community development offices and financial institutions to develop housing units in North Fork, for 21 years. With an established background in accounting, she is responsible for capital program strategies, business plans and housing network recommendations.

Colonial Golf Outing

Colonial Youth and Family Services hosted their 41st annual golf outing on September 20th at Swan Lake Country Club. This was Colonial’s first fundraiser in almost 2 years due to the pandemic. This year’s honorees were the three partners of Eastern Metalworks, John Hauser, Lawrence Raimondi, and Michael McCarthy. The weather was phenomenal, and a great time was had by all. This fundraiser allows Colonial to continue much needed programs that are not funded by governmental grants. It is because of the generosity of its participants that Colonial can continue it’s hard work for this community.

Losquadro and Foley Announce Completion of Patchogue Paving Project

On September 19, Supervisor Ed Romaine was on hand for the dedication of the new Rocky Point Fire House located at 90 King Road in Rocky Point. The new building replaces the department's North Shore Beach Co. 2 fire house. The

Brookhaven Town Highway Superintendent Daniel P. Losquadro and Councilman Neil Foley have announced the completion of a paving project in a residential East Patchogue neighborhood.

Prior to paving, crews made concrete improvements, including replacing damaged concrete curbing and aprons.

In addition, five new drains were installed in the area to alleviate flooding issues and concerns. Roads paved during the completion of this paving project include Autumn Court, Beverly Avenue, Cherry Lane, Dogwood Lane, Glenwood Street, Myrtle Lane, Oakland Street, Pine Neck Avenue, Regent Street, Roe Avenue, Sterling Avenue, and Worcester Court.

The total cost for this project was approximately $586,000.

Senator Alexis Weik Introduces Legislation to Require Municipalities to Budget and Plan for Regular Dredging of their Waterways

Senator Weik has recently introduced legislation that would require each municipality that has a waterway within its territorial boundary and which requires regular dredging, to establish a budget and schedule to ensure the dredging is done on the appropriate timescale.

“Regular dredging of waterways is the most important method of ensuring these waterways are safe to navigate, that the waterways natural flora and fauna are protected, and to ensure businesses and boaters that use the waterway can continue to do so,” said Senator Alexis Weik. “With so many years in between dredging, it is critically important that the governments whose responsibility it is to dredge, budget and plan for these projects so when the time comes, the work gets done.”

This legislation came about due to the Senator’s relentless efforts to ensure the Browns River in Sayville finally gets dredged. The Browns River is a federal waterway that provides critical access to and from Fire Island. In addition to the federal government having to dredge the channel, the County and Town of Islip must provide for an appropriate “spoil site” to deposit the materials. It is a unique waterway that requires each level of government to work and budget together to get done.

Unfortunately, what should be a project that gets done every eight to ten years, has not been done in seventeen years. With proper planning and budgeting, the Browns River would have been dredged in an appropriate time period.

Many Pay Tribute During Gold Star Families Ceremony

The Fifth Annual Gold Star Families Recognition Ceremony was held Sunday in honor of those who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country and their families.

Among the monuments at Bartlett Pond Park in Middle Island, were elected officials, family and friends who made tributes to the fallen.

“As we honor those who gave so unselfishly, let’s not forget their families, those who gave up a life of normalcy so that their soldiers could defend our country,” said Assemblyman Joe DeStefano in an address to the crowd. “It is not easy to see a loved one go off to war, to spend the days wondering and worrying and then to receive notice that the ultimate sacrifice was made. These families too gave the ultimate sacrifice and we owe them our eternal gratitude.”

The motto of America’s Gold Star Families is Honor, Hope and Healing, DeStefano noted. “They are dedicated and devoted and our thanks can never come close to matching their commitment. I do

want them to know that the honor we feel in their presence will never fade; that we share in the hope they express day even in the darkest times and we hold out our hands in healing so they know that we will always be at their side.”

Also speaking at the ceremony was Assemblywoman Jodi Giglio, who thanked the event’s participants, including Gail Lynch Bailey, president of the Longwood Alliance and the Middle Island Civic Association, Brookhaven Supervisor Ed Romain, and Jim Mazzarella, Suffolk legislator, as well as the Longwood Board of Education. “It is a sure sign of the strength of our community when so many people come together to honor those who served our country and their families,” said Giglio, whose father is an Air Force veteran. “We can never forget the sacrifice they have made so that we may be free.”

“The strength of our nation lies in our Armed Service,” Lynch-Bailey said from the podium in front of the Gold Star monument. “The

strength of our Armed Services lies in our service men and women, and they draw their strength from our families. America recognizes that no one has given more for the nation than the families of the fallen.”

Corporal Jerome D. Ventura, Army Private James McGraff, and Air Force Staff Sergeant Louis M. Bonacasa, who has the bridge carrying Yaphank Avenue over the Long Island Expressway named after him through the efforts of Assemblyman Joe DeStefano and other Suffolk legislators.

BY KARL GROSSMAN East End YIMBY—for Yes In My Backyard—continued its work at encouraging affordable housing at a meeting last week. It was refreshing to observe a group of folks—of varied ages and backgrounds including two veteran architects and a long-time former New York State housing specialist—gathered.

It was a contrast to those who oppose affordable housing under the banner of NIMBY—Not In My Backyard.

Opening the meeting in Sag Harbor— where the median price of a house has reached an unaffordable-for-most-people median price of $1.3 million—Michael Daly, the YIMBY’s founder and leader, spoke of the group being “committed to taking action.”

“We advocate” for affordable housing, he emphasized. This includes endeavoring to “educate ourselves and others,” he said. An emphasis is on appearances at meetings of government panels and civic associations and countering the NIMBYs who “regurgitate myths” which have discouraged “affordable housing for so long.”

Mr. Daly, a real estate broker, described the myths as including the claim that affordable housing “hurts the environment” when, in fact, “community

housing goes through stringent environmental review;” it drives down property values although “repeated research” shows it has “no negative impact on home prices;” looks “cheap” but, in fact, it must comply with “all the same building codes and regulations” as market-rate projects;” hurts the quality of local schools when “the opposite is true.”

Earlier this year on Shelter Island, Bob Kohn, who had recently been appointed a member of its Community Housing Board, opposed and decried the town joining in providing affordable housing.

At a Community Housing Board meeting in June, he referred it as “socialized housing.” He said those who couldn’t afford to live on Shelter Island should go elsewhere. He was bounced from the board. The median price of a house on Shelter Island has skyrocketed to $1.4 million.

The focus at the meeting was indeed on “taking action” and strategies were discussed.

What YIMBY is facing is not new in Suffolk County.

The challenge, however, is more intense as the median price of a house in Suffolk has skyrocketed to now $535,000.

My first job as a reporter in Suffolk was at the Babylon Town Leader in a town that was hit, along with the rest of western Suffolk, by the first wave of the huge post-World War II population move onto Long Island. An issue when I began at the Leader in 1962 was the resistance in Babylon to housing other than singlefamily residences. I was assigned to write about the several garden apartments that had been built, the need they met, and whether they did or didn’t conflict with the communities in which they were built. I found no conflict.

Up the road from where I live in Noyac, in 2019 the Sandy Hollow Cove Apartments opened in Tuckahoe. On a 2.6-acre site, three buildings offering 14 studio apartments, 12 one-bedroom apartments and two two-bedroom units, were built. The landscaping is lovely. It’s a joint project of the private company Georgica Green Venues, the Town of Southampton, the Suffolk County Office of Community Development and New York State Homes & Community Renewal. They are for people with low and moderate incomes. The apartments

As Shelter Island Supervisor Gerry Siller noted with Mr. Kohn’s termination, Town Code sets the board’s purpose as to “promote community housing” specifically “in order to maintain the local economy, community services and the economic and social diversity that characterize the Town of Shelter Island.”

Mr. Siller said of Mr. Kohn’s plan, “the only problem it will solve is to ensure that the wealthy few who can still afford to live here will have accessible labor in the next town. That is simply not the community we want.”

Groundhog Day for Mets Fans

BY TOM BARTON Some things seem to never change, and the New York Mets disappointing their fans is one of those things. We also enter very familiar territory with the Mets heading into the offseason.

This is a flawed team with questions all over the diamond, questions in the front office and is the right man leading this dugout? Does this sound like groundhog day yet? The Mets will also go into the Amazin playbook this offseason and pull out all the talking points New York fans have heard for decades. "We are going to spend big" and "we will shake up the team" will be the offseason mantra, but that hasn't led to results on the field.

The Mets opened up this year with 10 to 1 odds to win the World Series, +140 to win the division, and

almost a shoe in to make the playoffs at -250. Well, none of that happened for bettors as the Mets were one of the most disappointing teams compared to their preseason odds.

So the question is now what?

Obviously they need a new front office, sure, but we've seen this script before. Decisions have to be made about the manager. As of now the question is, is he really to blame? So, then we go to the onfield help. The most optimistic Mets fan will cite injuries in 2021 and feel comfort there. deGrom went down, Thor is still missing, and a slew of position players were banged up. But, let's be real, that is no excuse, nor should it be a comfort. Don't let the Mets sell you the same team expecting different results.

In so many ways, our society has been completely transformed by COVID-19 and the events of 2020. Our habits have changed completely. How we eat and purchase food is completely changed.

With regularity I come across numerous Amazon.com owned delivery trucks in my neighborhood every single day. I have not stepped foot in the Smith Haven Mall since 2019. Our children have had their educations forever changed, with new methods of teaching and learning thrust upon them with no warning or opportunity to prepare. Society at large views history through a lens of preCOVID and the hopeful optimism of a post-COVID reality. And yes, fantasy sports was transformed in ways that were obvious to see up front and more subtle ways we are only starting to realize.

Let me say up front that I think the changes to baseball were more noticeable than the changes to football. Not just in the ways we experience both sports, but how they are reported upon, how they are viewed and yes the way we enjoy them both through fantasy sports. The continued expansion of sabermetrics as analytical tools and methods remains something more unique to baseball.

The Mets have a high profile money man running the team, finally. He needs to open his wallet.

New York needs not one but 2 maybe 3 more bats. The starting pitching can't rely upon mid 30's starters to stay healthy so some arms will be a must, and that bullpen, ughhh it got ugly late. I'm not sure if Javy Baez's late push and friendship to Lindor will push them that way, or is Trevor Story, Marcus Siemien, or Kris Bryant the answer? What about Max Scherzer or Robbie Ray? These are some huge names and will take some big contracts. So, the question is do Mets fans get the same promises with the same disappointing results or will they push their chips to the middle of the table this offseason and spend like Bobby Axelrod would?

Was 2019 Really Only 3 Years Ago? to us with Pitch f/x data and it is called the swinging strike rate. It is one of the biggest drop offs that I can ever recall in major league baseball since I am following the game from the 1970’s.

But we are tracking it now through technology and we don’t know precisely why this is happening to this player. At least we know that it is happening and we can adjust. I would still like to know why Felipe Lopez wasn’t 1/10th the basketball player we thought he was going to be coming out of high school in 1994 and he joined the St. John’s Red Storm to much fanfare.

The 2019 baseball season finished up much differently than the way that the 2021 baseball season is about to end. As readers of my column know, the holy grail of offensive statistics for baseball is the OPS. It has a near perfect correlation to the number of runs and RBI’s that a hitter is credited with. In the 2019 season, there were (6) players who finished the season with an OPS above 1.00. The 2021 season will see only half that many players (3) finish with an OPS above 1.00. In 2019, there were (26) players who finished with an OPPS above .900. This season there are only (17) players who will finish with an OPS above .900.

The pitching has changed drastically as well. In 2019 a total of (6) pitchers struck out 250 or more batters. With one last week in the 2021 season, not one single pitcher has struck out 250 or more batters. While in my Dynasty mixed league hosted by ESPN, it is somewhat comforting to me that the team that is in first place with a near 20 point lead also lead the league in Batting Average

and Earned Run Average. But just as importantly, this team led the league in WHIP and On Base Percentage, two stats that have grown in popularity for making player assessments in the Sabermetric Era. Back in June, I wrote an article about how I seriously doubted that Mike Trout could be drafted in the first round of any 2022 fantasy baseball drafts. I did not realize how far ahead I was of the curve

at the time. A writer for ESPN this week wrote that he didn’t see Trout being drafted in the 3rd round of drafts next spring. In 2019, Keston Hiura put up a .938 OPS as a rookie. In a disastrous 2021 his OPS has cratered to .558. Sabermetric stats tell us that Hiura’s weakness in 2019 was chasing pitches outside of the strike zone. In 2021, he is swinging at pitches in the strike zone, but missing them completely. This is a stat brought

You Know "Boat Trim" – But Do You Know "Boat Squat?"

When I teach seamanship classes, inevitably somebody raises their hand and asks about how “flat” the boat should be? I ask, “By ‘flat’, I am guessing that you mean relative to her waterline. But do you mean when she is sitting at the dock, going slowly forward but only at a ‘slow bell*’ or making all deliberate speed?”

As their eyes glaze over, I know that we will have to take it by the numbers. This column is about that.

Boat Trim

Understanding boat trim and boat squat are all about control and avoiding running aground. For a “planing boat”, i.e., those boats we’re most familiar with that buzz around the bays and creeks, usually with an outboard engine on the stern, that “climb up” on to the water as they go faster, trim is synonymous with every aspect of the boat. Whether it be at the dock, barely making way or operating “at speed”, how ‘flat’ she rides is largely under the control of the skipper and he or she should be constantly aware of what trim they are assuming. This trim is best controlled by what angle you place the outboard engine relative to the transom.

Huh? Usually in the throttle, there is a thumb control that when you press it “down”, it brings the propeller in closer to the transom. See figure 1.

By bringing the propeller in closer to the transom, you force the bow down from its manufactured waterline. When you would want to do that? How about if you were heading into strong wave action? If your bow was trimmed ‘up’, the force of the waves would accentuate that, possibly making it more difficult to see – and to control the boat.

Now, for a displacement vessel, trim is different from squat. Trim is the difference of the forward and aft draft while the boat is stationary. As she gets underway and her aspect to her water lines changes, she is affecting “squat.”

Naval architects justifiably worry about whether she has forward or aft “squat” (leans forward or aft as she builds speed.)

This is largely determined by her center of gravity and her “block coefficient”, which is the volume of the hull (V) divided by the Length of her Water Line (LWL) times the (maximum) Beam of her Water Line (BWL) times her Draft.

If you draw a box around the submerged part of the ship, it is the ratio of the box volume occupied by the ship.

Commensurately, if you press the thumb control to bring the engine “up”, it moves the propeller away from the transom, forcing the bow up from its manufactured waterline.

Why would you do that? Well, there are a number of reasons. One reason is that a powered vessel’s fuel consumption improves as you reduce its wetted surface.

So, as you are cruising down the bay, you can trim the engine up and save fuel at a given rate of speed. Secondly, if you are willing to throw fuel efficiency to the wind, sort to speak, a powered vessel simply goes faster with less of a wetted surface. And, as you bring the bow up, you reduce the wetted (in the water) surface. Compare how much more of figure 1 is below the water line, versus figure 2.

As she starts to put on some way (speed), imagine this cycle of water building up speed under the ship. This causes a drop in water pressure under the boat. This causes the ship to vertically drop in the water. This is “boat squat” and how a boat with 4’ of draft hits the bottom in 5’ of water. (Hint: go slow in shallow water, Big ‘Un.)

Military Drinking Water Crisis

The United States Marine Corps uses Camp Lejeune in North Carolina for amphibious assault training and as a deployment staging area.

Founded in 1941, the base has been in continuous operation ever since.

Unfortunately, marines and their families stationed there between 1953 and 1987 unknowingly ingested contaminated water, which led to a greater diagnosis rate of kidney cancer, liver disease, and ALS, as well as numerous other diseases. Testing the tap water revealed unsafe levels of over 70 chemicals, all of which are hazardous to human health.

While the government eventually fixed the problem, thousands of people faced exposure. For this reason, the VA now accepts water contamination claims for disability, and compensation benefits.

FIREFIGHTING FOAM CONTAMINATION

and cannot be broken down into other substances through ordinary chemical processes. It can persist in nature for hundreds, or possibly thousands of years. Water can transport these chemicals, and humans, birds and fish also help transport PFAS. Thus people are exposed to PFAS through food, water, and by inhaling dust. Since PFAS accumulates in the blood after long periods of exposure and their clearance is slow, even relatively low PFAS concentrations in the drinking water can be associated with substantial increases in blood serum levels.

The U.S. military’s use of firefighting foam that contains potentially dangerous chemical compounds could have serious health consequences for those who handle it and those who live nearby. According to the U.S. EPA, polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are found in the aqueous filmforming foam that the military has used for extinguishing aviation fires since the 1970s. As such, they are an important source of contamination in areas where firefighting training occurs.

In 2017, the Pentagon releases its first assessment of the levels of PFAS in its water systems. It reported that there are 401 known military facilities where PFAS were used. At least 297 of these locations

tested positive for contamination in wells, on-base drinking sources and groundwater. An update in 2019 indicates that the number of bases with contamination is around at least 425 military sites, including

National Guard facilities. The PFAS has been linked to cancers, birth defects, thyroid disease, liver damage, and many other medical problems.

PFAS remain in the environment

As stated above the VA now accepts water contamination claims for disability, compensation benefits.

Since the chemical remains in the blood serum for very long periods of time it can easily be proven to be the source of the health problem.

Peter: A Man of Integrity

When I was growing up in Shirley, William Floyd Parkway was the home of Peter’s Fruit market which opened in 1979.

I would go there several times a week with my mother to buy fresh produce. There was never a day we entered that store and were not cordially greeted by Pete Montalbano or one of his sons. The level of care with which they served each customer was akin to being taken care of by family. I was always struck by how hard Pete and his family were working. Struggling through the freezing winters, sweltering summers, long hours on their feet and holidays but always with a smile, a hug, and the best and freshest food you could buy. He would set aside the pick of the bunch and save it for my mom. I watched as his sons came into the business. One by one they worked tirelessly next to their father. Eventually, his beautiful daughter Maria joined their ranks, thus completing the circle.

Who was this man called Peter? He was tough on the outside but carried a heart of gold on the inside. He was kind and generous.

There was never a time that I asked for help with a charity event that he did not donate ten times what I asked for. He was a strict father who taught his children, by his own example, the meaning of hard work and sacrifice. He lived by a code of honor, ethics, and respect. He gave everyone his respect but demanded the same in return. He was a devoted husband to his beautiful Laura to whom he has been married to for the past sixty-one years. Laura, who was mother to an entire community, has been the force behind her man. They were the American dream come true. Both from a rich Italian heritage, they worked, struggled, and became successful. They were vibrant members of the local Italian community and created a network of family and friends.

When my husband Connie was sick many DIANA GUERCIO, 78, of Mastic, died at her residence on September 16, 2021. She was born in Brooklyn and dedicated her time and talents as a volunteer and devoted parishioner at St. John’s RC Church in Center Moriches.

Diana was predeceased by her beloved husband Peter and her daughter Diana. She was the loving mother of Peter Jr., Donna, Susan, and Debra, cherished grandmother of Jacqueline, Deronna, Aaron and Madisyn. She was the beloved Godmother to Ernie Ruberto.

Diana has always considered Father John and Father Michael from St. John’s as part of her large loving family. Family and friends, we received at Roma Funeral Home in Shirley on Wednesday. A Mass was offered on Thursday at St. John’s RC Church and interment followed at Calverton Nation Cemetery.

years ago Pete would send over cases of fresh fruit and vegetables. He asked nearly every day how he was doing and if I needed any help. Never did he ask for repayment; it was just what he did. He was a caring man who knew pain and hardship. He did not fear it, but he respected its power.

Peter and Laura have had many blessings but also sorrow. When their beloved son Angelo was tragically killed in a car accident, their lives were changed forever. It was only through love and the support of their family and the community that they fought through their pain. They have battled illness for some time but always facing their problems with fortitude and grace.

He loved to listen to Il Volvo, Andrea Bocelli, and Pavarotti but most of all his favorite was hearing his granddaughter MarissaAnn singing his favorite song O Sole Mio. He loved to play Sicilian cards, watching baseball, and playing with his grandchildren. His favorite foods were pasta and pizza. His greatest love and enjoyment was being with his family.

If I had to describe the Montalbano family the one word that immediately comes to mind is love. A love that is old world and generational. A love that is compassionate and unbreakable. Peter Montalbano, together with his beloved wife Laura, have left a legacy so laden with love. It is impossible to speak about Pete without including his wife and children. They are so intermeshed, so woven together. It is that bond, the glue, that love, that is the foundation of the Montalbano family. The man who forged that foundation, Peitro Montalbano, has left us to take his place in Paradise. His memory lives on not only in the mind and hearts of his wonderful family but in all those he touched with his kindness and honor.

PIETRO (PETER) MONTALBANO, 86, of Manorville, died on September 21, 2021.

He was born in Italy and one of the most iconic and successful businessowners as the proprietor of “Peter’s Fruit Co.” He was the devoted and loving husband of Laura, He was predeceased by his beloved son Angelo and cherished father to Peter (Barbara), Guy (Cristiane), Lenny (AnnMarie), Maria Luisa (James) and Frank Anthony (Dawn). He was the loving grandfather to Peter Jr. (Nicole), Lauraliz (John), Laura (Danny), Rosemarie (Matthew), Peterjohn, Angelo (Carisa), Lauren (Frank), Sarina, Michael, MarissaAnn, Laurielle, Angelo Peter, Frank Anthony and Great Grandfather to Adrianna, Isabella, Jake, Viera, Gabe, Leo, Angelo, Ariella, Chloe, Mariella, Sienna, Tristan, Noah, Lila, and devoted brother Lenny (Grace). Family and friends were received on Sunday at Roma Funeral Home in Shirley. Interment took place on Monday at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, Coram.
