Governor Cuomo Resigns Amid Sexual Harrassment Scandal

Succumbing to pressure leading all the way up to the White House on the heels of a 168-page report by the Attorney General detailing sexual misconduct with 11 different women, Andrew Cuomo has announced his resignation as governor of the State of New York. The three-term governor was facing impeachment with the majority of the members of both the state senate and assembly announcing they would vote to remove him.

Leadership of the state will fall to Lieutenant Gov. Kathy Hochul who will serve as the state’s first woman

contender due to the massive press attention he arranged for himself during the pandemic. He served in the Clinton administration as HUD secretary and was an established star in the Democrat Party. His image began to unravel after New York started to lead the nation in COVID deaths, primarily among seniors after his disastrous decision to send the virus patients into the states elder care facilities. His providing false statistics on the number of COVID deaths in the state drew the attention of federal investigators.

“New Yorkers can now begin to heal from the damage Andrew Cuomo inflicted on our state,” said Assemblyman Joe DeStefano, who pointed out that the impeachment would have gone beyond the sexual harassment allegations and the governor releasing the personal records of one of his accusers in an attempt to discredit her. “The impeachment would also have included his decision to send virus patients into the nursing homes destroying the lives of untold seniors and their families and his attempt to cover that up, in addition to his $5 million COVID book deal and allegations he used state employees to write it.”

DeStefano cautioned the governor not to use the 14 days he has left in office to issue executive orders, pardon his friends, give out raises and promotions, and other acts that wouldn’t survive normal legislative scrutiny. “The call was for him to resign immediately,” DeStefano said. “Not linger for two more weeks to inflict even more damage on the taxpayers.”

The governor, who followed in the footsteps of his father, Mario Cuomo, had been seen as a presidential

Attorney General report with his brother, CNN news anchor Chris Cuomo, who announced he was taking a week off after the scandal broke. “If the tables were reversed and this was a Republican,” said a civic leader who did not want to be identified, “Chris Cuomo would be leading the charge against them. Sadly, the Cuomos embody just how corrupt the news media and our political system have become.”

During Cuomo’s years in office, New York became the highest taxed state in the union with one of the worst economic climates in which to conduct business. A crime wave is sweeping over the state thanks to his emptying of the jails and eliminating bail for all but the worst violators, as well as his support of the Defund the Police movement.

The nation watched horrified as rioters looted New York’s major cities with Cuomo and his Democrat colleagues watching idly by. People fleeing in record numbers has caused the Empire State to lose two congressional seats following the recent census.

Cuomo’s resignation does not get him out of legal hot water as one of his victims filed criminal charges against him and four of the state’s district attorneys have opened investigations into his alleged criminal behavior. He is

also the subject of an FBI probe.

The report issued by Letitia James, the state’s top law enforcement official, reads like a lurid soap opera with detailed examples of sexual abuse and harassment occurring over a number of years, including inappropriate touching allegations from a state trooper who Cuomo personally recruited to his security detail. Others were women assigned to the executive office and some working in the private sector.

“The findings released by the Attorney General Letitia James were extremely troubling and I applaud her for running a thorough and independent investigation,” Assemblywoman Jodi Giglio said in one of the hundreds of similar statements issued by public officials both state and nationwide. “The AG’s investigation substantiated and corroborated each of the 11 brave victims’ stories of sexual harassment and retaliation for speaking up. No one should suffer the systemic and frankly disgusting sexual harassment that Governor Cuomo,” Giglio said in calling on Cuomo to resign immediately.

“Governor Andrew Cuomo sexually harassed multiple women and in doing so violated federal and state law,” James concluded, noting that her office’s 4-month probe confirmed that Cuomo “engaged in unwanted and inappropriate groping, kissing, and hugging,” along with comments the accusers called “deeply humiliating, uncomfortable, offensive, or inappropriate.” The report also concludes that the governor created a “toxic work environment” and “climate of fear” and went on to say that investigators found that “the governor and his senior team took actions to relate against at least one former employee for coming forward.”

The attorney had selected two outside lawyers to conduct the probe, Joon Kim and Anne Clark, who interviewed 179 witnesses, including the governor himself. “What this investigation revealed was a disturbing pattern of conduct by the governor of the great State of New York and those who basically did not put in place any protocols or procedures to protect these young women who believed in public service,” James said. “I believe women, and I believe these 11 women.”

The Cuomo drama has political overtones as Attorney General James’ hard line against her former Democrat ally is being looked at as her clearing the path to become his successor.

Congressman Lee Zeldin, a Shirley Republican also pursuing a run for the state’s top office, had plenty to say about Cuomo’s troubles: “Only a sociopath and serial predator like Governor Andrew Cuomo would actually think he could

His continued attempts to undermine his victims, this investigation and those carrying it out are disgusting and further render him unfit to serve as Governor of New York,” Zeldin said. “New York needs a leader to restore our state to glory, rather than lurch from scandal to scandal, neglecting the duties of

his office and his responsibilities to his constituents. New Yorkers need a Governor who will put their priorities first, not prioritize self-preservation in the face of endless misconduct. This is a crisis of leadership, and it’s up to every New Yorker to hold Cuomo accountable and Save Our State.”

“Unfortunately, for New Yorkers, we’re left with Cuomo’s Lieutenant who empowered this disgusting behavior while Andrew Cuomo cultivated this toxic culture, leaving a trail of victims in its wake. Kathy Hochul has been silent scandal after scandal, from fatal nursing home policies and coverups to rampant harassment, intimidation, bullying and abuse.”

In 7th LD Race: Rob Calarco Seeks Reelection

In the race for the Suffolk County’s 7th Legislative District, incumbent Rob Calarco is seeking reelection, and is being challenged by Dominick Thorne. Calarco, who also serves as the Legislature’s Presiding Officer, will appear on the Democrat and Working Family Party lines of the ballot. Thorne will appear on the Republican and Conservative lines.

This is Thorne’s second challenge against Calarco. Thorne was unsuccessful in his bid for election to the seat in 2019.

Calarco was first elected to the Legislature in 2011. November 2021 will be Calarco’s final run for the seat due to 6-term Legislative limits.

Calarco’s record of achievements during his tenure in the Legislature includes, but is not limited to securing tens of millions in funding for sewer infrastructure in the Village of Patchogue to improve water quality.

“Costs escalated substantially over time from the project’s concept to construction due to a number of variables like the pandemic, which

had a direct result on the supply chain,” Calarco said, noting that “Costs escalated not just for Patchogue, but across all sewer projects.”

Calarco also secured $4 million in funding each for the successful completion of the Canaan Lake project to eradicate overgrowth of invasive species that was depriving the lake of oxygen, and the Mud Creek watershed project which he says is “a work in progress.”

With lawsuits over the opioid issue awarding revenues to the county, Calarco, (whose legislation led to launching litigation), said that revenue will be directed towards substance abuse initiatives. “Suffolk County has substantial revenues from the lawsuits to roll out and put into programs, and we’ll be working hard to come up with the best plan to put that money into rehabilitation, prevention and education services, and linking people with help...”

Calarco talked about other projects he’s wrapping up during his tenure in the Legislature including a permanent bandshell for the much-celebrated

Summer Concert Series which will once again resume following the advent of COVID. “It’s nice to see projects come to fruition,” Calarco commented.

While Calarco talked about his record of accomplishments, he has mapped out an aggressive agenda for what will be his last term in the Legislature should he win reelection.

“With only two years left if I win,” Calarco said, “I want to see the

Patchogue sewer project get started, and I want to see our plans to turn the contaminated Blue Point property that once was a laundromat/dry cleaners that the Town of Brookhaven cleaned up into a park which is the best use for that parcel because it’s located in a residential community.”

From a fiscal standpoint, Calarco said the County is in better shape with a positive outlook moving into 2022. “Quite frankly, when I came in, Suffolk County was facing a $500 million budgeting shortfall over three years, and now we are looking at $500 million in surplus over three years, so we’re in a much stronger financial position,” Calarco said. With sales tax revenues projected an upswing, Calarco said, “We ended 2020 with a surplus, and we’re well on track to seeing a surplus in 2021 . . . The county executive’s budget was very conservative, the federal government gave us recovery funding, and we took a very cautious approach,” Calarco explained.

Moving forward, Calarco stated, “There’s a real opportunity for us to

change the dynamic of the county that we haven’t had in a long time. For the first time in 20 years we’re seeing an increase in the population migrating into our region, the demand for home sales is up, and there’s a real opportunity for people to move their businesses here “ With 2021 shaping up for Suffolk to see sales tax receipts to the tune of a $185 million surplus, Calarco pointed out, “A surplus gives us the opportunity to build our reserves like the pension and tax stabilization funds, and be ready for the next economic downturn, because there will be another one, so we’ll be prepared to weather the storm.”

Calarco said.

Asked what he plans to pursue after his final term in the Legislature, Calarco told South Shore Press: “I want to get through this election first.

I do know there’s still a lot of work to do in Suffolk County, and I would like to find a way to continue serving the residents of Suffolk County and do what makes sense for my family.”

Calarco and his wife reside with their three children in Patchogue.

Dominick Thorne Makes 2nd Run for 7th LD

Dominick S. Thorne is running for the 7th Legislative District in the November election. This will be Thorne’s second attempt to unseat Legislator and Presiding Officer Rob Calarco. Thorne will appear on the Republican and Conservative lines of the ballot.

Thorne works for the Suffolk County Board of Elections with bipartisan colleagues in the capacity of staff polling places with inspectors.

Asked why he is running for election, Thorne cited a multitude of reasons. “There are so many reasons why I’m running,” Thorne explained, “but the first is to tackle the misuse of taxpayer money that we get - we get a large amount of money from Jake’s 58, and instead of paying down our debt, we’re using $1.8 million dollars to spend on the county’s Legislative campaigns. So say if J.Q. Public donates to my campaign or Rob’s, then Suffolk County matches that four-toone.” Thorne said he “will not” take campaign funding from this source.

But Calarco clarified, the Fair Elections Fund was created to give all candidates equal opportunities to get their messages to the voters. “Jake’s did extremely well after reopening last fall, and we expect to receive $25

million, of which 15% will go to the Fair Elections Fund. This,” Calarco explained, “is true grassroots because it matches donations a candidate raises that do not exceed $250, and donations cannot come from corporations or businesses or unions.”

Calarco said funding from this source will not go into effect until next year.

Thorne said county lawmakers should be doing more to make living in Suffolk County more affordable.

“They have to do more to make housing in Suffolk County more affordable because we have very, very young people who cannot afford to stay here because of how the county spends our money,” Thorne said. Asked specifically what steps he would take to increase the affordability of housing, Thorne stated: “The solutions are simple. We should be making intermuniciple agreements with other governmental agencies like Brookhaven Town and Islip Town to buy products like asphalt and salt. Every municipality needs these products.” Thorne said the county joining in a consortium of municipalities to make certain purchases would ‘save the county money.’

On the issue of public safety, Thorne said more should be done. “We need to

support the Blue more, because we’re getting away from protecting our police. We need to build up, support and defend the Suffolk County Police

Department,” Thorne said. Calarco, however, said a reform bill was passed by the Legislature this year, 16 to 1, (one seat was vacant), following a task force study whose members comprised broad representation that included the county executive, SCPD, electeds, NAACP, PBA, religious and community groups and civil rights activists aimed to improve policing, instill trust and ensure there is no intentional bias. “We live in one of the safest counties in the country because

of the work our law enforcement officers do,” said Calarco, who has received PBA endorsements during previous elections.

Thorne criticized Suffolk’s infrastructure. “Our roads are in horrible shape. “The cost of everything in Suffolk County is so high some people can’t afford to put gas in their cars, and when we do, the roads are so bad they damage our cars.” Thorne cited Horseblock Road and many state roads that are in need of repair, and stated, “Suffolk County needs to step up to New York State to help fix the roads, but they’re not, because it’s one party rule from the Governor’s mansion to Suffolk County, and no one wants to rock anyone’s boat, but,” he adds, “more money should be coming from the state back to Suffolk County.”

Thorne said revenues received from the opioid settlement should be appropriated for rehab programs. “I would pray that they put that money towards rehab and getting folks back on track,” Thorne said. “Just because people make bad decisions, that doesn’t make them bad people, and we need to track that money to male sure it’s spent in drug treatment programs to help these people.”

Asked what makes him the better

candidate, Thorne said, “I’m not a career politician. The county needs a fresh pair of eyes. I’m a dad with two young daughters. I’m proud of my grassroots campaign, and I’m looking for this election because my family, my neighbors and the residents of Suffolk County need my voice.” Thorne said he is confident he will win the election over Calarco this time at bat.

“I’m extremely confident I’ll win this time. I have a lot more volunteer staff, and I’m very proud to be out there to have the opportunity to serve.”

Thorne volunteered 25 years with Patchogue Ambulance Company EMS, and as a firefighter with North Patchogue Fire Department until he said he was injured during duty.

“Volunteer service is paramount, “Thorne said, “and when you have a career politician with no community volunteer service, that’s a problem.”

Calarco countered Thorne’s assertions stating, “That’s a line that gets used all the time. I’m a member of Knights of Columbus, and Sons of Italy, and for the past 20 years my work has been centered in and around county government and public service, and I’m very proud of my record. I don’t work a political patronage job,” Calarco added. “I’ve been elected because I’ve earned the trust of my constituents.”

Bellport Day Celebrating Bellport Day along Main Street in this bucolic village on a perfect summer day, what more could one want. Many residents and visitors enjoyed games, eclectic array of crafts and food. Bellport Chamber of Commerce sponsored the “2021 Bellport Plein Air at the Bay” art contest with winners displayed at Bellport Arts.

Wednesdays on the bay is a racing event, that is an interesting performance of small sailboats performing movements to the delight of spectators.

Kudos to the mayor and his administration for keeping Bellport Village a great place to live and work.

American Legion Post Holds Annual Clam Bake

The Arthur H. Clune American Legion Post 1533 of Mastic Beach held their annual clam bake fundraiser last weekend to raise funds to support community based programs. Over 200 local residents attended the event which was held on field behind the post in Mastic Beach.

At this years event the Suffolk County American Legion Commander and the Mastic Beach Post joined in honoring and thanking Fred Towle Jr. and The South Shore Press for all their support and efforts on behalf of Suffolk County Veterans. “Fred Towle and The South Shore Press always step up when we call and ask for help for our veterans. They provide a vital link in helping us cut through red tape and get information and services to our veterans,” said Fred Miller, American Legion Chaplin.

This years festival included music, games and all types of food and drinks including clams, crabs, hot dogs and hamburgers. A great time was had by all.

Over 200 people attended the event that was held at Rockhill Country Club in Manorville.

Pascale has served as County Clerk since 2006.

Nature Conservancy Holds Kick Off Event Over 60 people attended a kick off cocktail party for a newly formed group called the Mastic Beach Conservancy.

The event help celebrate the formation of the group that is dedicated to protecting and preserving environmental properties in our community.

National Night Out National Night Out was a great success this year, with 26 participating local agencies and hundreds of attendees. A very special thank you to the William Floyd School district staff, for working with the SCPD 7th precinct and the Community Library to select and set up the outdoor field, and all the extra administrative work that was involved. WFSD Security and Custodial staff are to be commended for their dedicated work on the field that night to help make it a success! Officer Frank Raspanti from the 7th Precinct was instrumental in visiting countless local agencies and businesses to encourage their participation. All the SCPD 7th precinct officers were a great help in getting donations for raffles. Met Life Insurance not only provided the Child ID station, but a surprise balloon artist agent! Shirley Applebees deserves a huge thank you for (once again) donating trays and trays of delicious fresh cooked hamburgers and hotdogs to the event. We thank the Home Depot of Shirley for having a Family Build kit tent. Everyone’s favorite activity is always visiting the EMS first responders, and a huge thank you to Mastic Fire Department, Mastic Beach Fire Department, Mastic Beach, Shirley and Mastic Ambulance companies for providing tours of their vehicles and volunteers to make the night special.

Romaine and Dan Panico Announce Annual Snapper Derby to be Held at Union Dock in Center Moriches

Supervisor Ed Romaine and Brookhaven Councilman Dan Panico have announced that the Town, in partnership with the Montauk Surfcasters Association, will host its 2nd Annual Keith Romaine Memorial Snapper Derby at Union Avenue Dock in Center Moriches, on Sunday, September 12th, 11 a.m. – 3 p.m.; the event will take place rain or shine.

The Derby is open to children up to 18-years-old. Participants will need to bring their own fishing pole, bait, and bucket. Each fisherman or woman will receive a complimentary tee-shirt, while supplies last, generously donated by the Montauk Surfcasters Association. Prizes will be awarded for different categories including biggest fish and are being donated by Montauk Surfcasters Association and the Chamber of Commerce of Moriches.

Losquadro and Panico Announce Completion of Paving Projects in East Moriches, Eastport and Manorville Brookhaven Town Highway Superintendent Daniel P. Losquadro and Councilman Dan Panico have announced the completion of several paving projects in Eastport, East Moriches and Manorville.

In the first project, eight roadways were resurfaced in a residential area of Eastport/East Moriches. Last year, in anticipation and preparation for paving, crews inspected drains and made concrete improvements, including replacing damaged concrete sidewalks, curbing and aprons.

Crews removed and replaced 1,275 linear feet of concrete curb, 258 square feet of concrete sidewalk, 775 square feet of ADA-compliant handicap ramps, and 1,436 square feet of concrete aprons, at a cost of $91,686. The total cost for this project was approximately $933,000.

Roads resurfaced include: Bradley Lane, East Moriches Boulevard, Hawthorne Lane, Hickory Lane, Locust Avenue, Magnolia Court, Seatuck Avenue, and Thornewood Court.

In the Manorville paving project, crews resurfaced Wading River Road from South Street to the North Sunrise Service Road, as well as Wading River Annex.

The total cost for this project was approximately $717,700.

said, “Wading River Road is heavily-traversed and was in need of resurfacing. Similarly, the roadways in the neighborhood off of East Moriches Boulevard had greatly deteriorated. Motorists, pedestrians and bicyclists can now enjoy traveling on safer, smoother

South Country Central School District students enjoyed a summer of learning through elementary and secondary summer programs.

A Summer of Learning Ninety in-person and remote students in grades K-5 in the South Country Central School District continued their learning in July by participating in the district’s Summer Reading and Math Program, an immersive and interactive curriculum of lessons and activities.

“Students received learning instruction in a joyful atmosphere,” said Summer School Principal Victoria Williams. “We aimed to provide a meaningful and engaging experience.”

The three-week program featured group reading and math learning activities centered on the weekly themes of “Learning Is Our Superpower,” “Growing as We Learn” and “Aloha, We Are Learners.” Students also played games that incorporated movement, such as math hopscotch, and took part in exciting science, technology, engineering, art and math lessons.

All students received lunch from Long Island Cares and were treated to props for the themed days, provided through the generosity of donors, that included superhero masks, slap bracelets, sunglasses and glow sticks, as well as books and school supplies.

The district also held a fiveweek academic summer program attended by 284 middle and high school students. Middle school students worked to improve their math, reading and writing skills, while high schoolers were afforded the opportunity to recoup credits.

The program has made it possible for eight seniors to participate in a summer graduation ceremony, slated for Aug. 11.

Nick Caracappa Tours the First Legislative District and Cornell Cooperative Extension’s Shellfish Hatchery

Suffolk County Legislator Nick Caracappa (4th LD, Selden) recently went on a “field trip” to tour the First Legislative District, courtesy of his colleague, Legislator Al Krupski (Riverhead). The purpose of the visit was to see some of the beautiful farmland, beaches, bays and other natural resources the east end has to offer. The tour included a visit to the Cornell Cooperative Extension’s (CCE) Education Center in Riverhead, as well as the Shellfish Hatchery at CCE’s Suffolk County Marine Environmental Learning Center at Cedar Beach in Southold.

Caracappa was provided with indepth information from CCE on how public funding and private donations

are put to use to preserve resources.

Part of Cornell University, and established in 1917, CCE is comprised of educators, researchers, specialists and support personnel who are dedicated to making Suffolk County a desirable place to live and work. CCE’s professional team helps preserve our county’s vast heritage, protect our eco-systems, support families and provide our youth opportunities for community service and researchbased education in science, technology, engineering and math.

County Clerk Pascale Offers “Homeowner Watch List” recorded. There may be some very rare instances, however, when a document may be recorded in error. This new service will send an email notification to enrolled participants when any new documents are recorded.

“Whenever a homeowner participating in this program refinances their mortgage, pays off their mortgage, or adds a family member to the deed to their home, this service will send them an email alerting them to the new recording. Just as important, in the event a document is unexpectedly recorded against the property, the homeowner can contact my office to investigate,” said Pascale.

This complimentary service will allow property owners to view their property’s most recent history and will notify them when and if any new documents related to their property are recorded in my office,” stated Pascale.

Bill Introduced to Alter County Term Limits Law

BY KARL GROSSMAN In 1993, Suffolk County became the first county in New York State to adopt term limits for county officials. Now, legislation has been introduced to alter that law to provide that the officials covered would be barred from holding the same position for 12 years “in a lifetime, regardless of whether those terms are served consecutively or nonconsecutively.”

The existing Suffolk term limits law only bars the county executive, legislators and the county comptroller from holding an office for more than 12 “consecutive” years.

But a problem with this arose this spring when a former county legislator, Kate Browning, received the Democratic nomination to run again for the Suffolk Legislature. Ms. Browning had served as a legislator from 2005 to 2017. Then, term-limited by the 12 “consecutive” year rule, she did not run again.

She took a job as director of code enforcement in the Town of Babylon.

This year, with the resignation of Legislator Rudy Sunderman, she sought to run again for her old seat on the legislature in a special election and complete his term.

However, a lawsuit was brought by two Republican voters in the legislative

district and backed by the Suffolk GOP and State Supreme Court Justice James Hudson ruled her ineligible to run for the legislature again because of the 12-year limit. He wrote that the word “consecutive” in the Suffolk term limit law should be viewed as a “word of limitation and not as an invitation to run for office in the future” for the same office. But then the Appellate Division of the State Supreme Court, reversed that, deciding the Suffolk term limit law “does not expressly impose any total or lifetime term limit.”

Ms. Browning of Shirley thus got back on the ballot, but lost the special election in May to Republican James Mazzarella of Moriches by 3,207 to 2,106 votes. They will face each other again in the general election in November, this time running for a full two-year legislative term.

In June, newly elected Legislator Mazzarella joined with fellow Republican Legislators Anthony Piccirillo and Kevin McCaffrey (the GOP minority leader on the panel) in introducing the measure that would alter the wording of the county’s term limit law to say it prohibits the county executive, legislators and the comptroller from holding the same office 12 years “in a lifetime.” Their bill is now in committee.

A pamphlet titled “History of County Term Limits” published by the National Association of Counties (which is online) starts by noting, “The Ancient Greeks and Romans were the first societies to implement term limits. They believed that a change of leadership periodically was good for government.” But it was only in the 1990s that “the demand for term limits started to spread in the United States.”

On the federal level, the 22nd Amendment to the U.S. Constitution was ratified in 1951 limiting the U.S. president to two four-year terms. This, says the National Constitution Center in its online explanation, began with a push

Still, there are no term limits for members of Congress or, in New York, for elected officeholders in state government.

There’s debate over term limits. A piece published by the Brookings Institution, “Five Reasons to Oppose Congressional Term Limits,” says one reason would be “large swaths of lawmakers forfeiting their hard-earned experience while simultaneously requiring that freshman members make up for the training and legislative acumen that was just forced out of the door.” Yet, as the National Association of Counties relates, in the

Here, in Suffolk, as an example, there is Legislator Al Krupski of Cutchogue, a fourth-generation Suffolk farmer, a champion of open space and farmland preservation, former president of the Southold Trustees, a position in which he gained extensive experience in shoreline issues—with climate change more critical than ever—and he was a member of the Southold Town Board. He’s a few years away from his term limit, but how can he be replaced?

No Hype for Zach and the Jets

BY TOM BARTON As training camps opened up around the league this past week the buzz followed. That buzz is seemingly never louder than for new rookie quarterbacks whose franchises are hoping to turn their teams around. You’ll hear a lot about athletes being in “the best shape of their lives” and coaches speak about how great a player looks or a false “open competition” in camp to motivate veterans, but mostly you’ll hear about rookie signal callers and their development. Except in Jets camp.

In San Francisco beat writers are reporting how Trey Lance, someone who is supposed to have a steep learning curve, is already

making throws that Aaron Rodgers and Patrick Mahomes make. In Chicago the midway faithful have dubbed Justin Fields the savior of that proud franchise, and the Russell Wilson comps are clear as day. Up in New England Mac Jones is pushing Cam Newton for the starting job and the Pats writers are impressed. And don’t even get started with the Trevor Lawrence hype, that has him walking on water down in Duval county.

Which brings us to the #2 overall pick. Sure, Zach Wilson took some time to sign a deal and get into camp but we haven’t heard the same rave reviews. To be fair though, we haven’t heard anything

negative either. Wilson is a man who is flying under the radar, but why? How can the #2 overall pick, the franchise QB, and a very marketable figure fly under the radar in the biggest media market in the world? We don’t know. But this doesn’t mean it’s a bad thing.

Jets fans don’t have the reports of the phenomenal arm strength or unreal athletic ability, but there is also no job competition. There might not be the drooling beat writers but in New York it’s also important to have few detractors.

Wilson is a captivating figure and he’ll get his time in the sun.

For now he can stay in shade and concentrate on being the best QB

For many who self directed their IRA accounts in the late 1990’s and early 2000’s and remember day trading, you will remember the concept of catching falling knives. As the dot com stock bubble burst, countless investors painfully reasoned that a former high flying stock that was $245 9 months ago, had to be a screaming bargain now that it had hit single digits and was hovering at a tasty $7. It couldn’t fall all the way to $ZERO. It had been flying high for so long and was one of the best, most innovative companies listed on the exchanges. Well, so many of those stocks did fall all of the way down to zero, and so many of those falling knives did manage to stab the thickest of those outstretched hands that tried to catch them. Catching falling knives in fantasy baseball does not come with the same associated financial pitfalls as being late to the party after a stock market bubble has burst, but it can still be a humbling experience for most of us. Let’s review some players for whom the hype and high Average Draft Positions never came to full fruition.

• Victor Robles – the Washington Nationals outfielder was the darling of the prospect world in 2017/2018. In Victor’s rookie season of 2019 he made a solid debut. With 33 doubles and 17

home runs in 155 games played, Victor also had stolen 28 bases that season. For good measure he added 35 walks, the OPS was at .745 and the .255 batting average was respectable for a rookie and looked certain to improve. And then came COVID in 2020 and it all unraveled for Victor. Victor was just dropped in my ESPN Dynasty League and the guy that owned him had drafted him in 2019 when we drafted that Dynasty league from scratch and he didn’t even call anyone to see if those who like to catch falling knives would expose their hands. As Victor struggled through the 9 week season of COVID 2020, I even approached this owner to see if I could catch a disappointed owner off guard. He wasn’t interested and he said he would like to wait Victor’s struggles out. I exercised a waiver pick on Victor the other night and I will give him a chance to resurrect his once promising career. What do I see you may be asking? For starters, Victor does not turn 25 until next May. I watched a whole host of owners rushing in line to grab Jarren Duran of the Boston Red Sox this season and Victor is a few months younger than him. I feel a whole lot better about the next 400 at bats that will come from Victor Robles than the next 400 at bats that come out of Jaren

hype. It might not be a bad thing.

• Gavin Lux – a lot of fantasy owners are scratching their heads as to why it hasn’t happened yet for Gavin Lux in a Dodgers uniform. Gavin Lux is still just 23. He does not turn 24 until November 24th. But I see 31 walks in only 278 at bats and there are no serious injuries here. A strained hamstring in 2021 has been the only injury encountered by Lux. To be honest, I honestly feel that Dodgers manager Dave Roberts has been a bit of a jerk towards Lux and has

been less than supportive and impatient.

Catch this falling knife if you can. This one isn’t going to cut you.

• Cavan Biggio – Biggio has been polarizing since his MLB debut. His physical tools never really stood up to his father Craig’s abilities. With Dad having pulled off a 50 double, 50 steal season in the late 1990’s it was a tall order for Cavan to match that athleticism. But there was this amazing stat picked up

by Statcast, that Cavan swung at only 11% of pitches that were outside of the

strike zone. Known in the industry as his “chase rate”, the next best player in the major leagues who didn’t chase pitches outside of the strike zone was Mike Trout at 18%. That was pretty elite company for the young Biggio to keep, but there were warning signs. Biggio also didn’t swing at a lot of pitches that WERE in the strike zone in addition to not swinging at the pitches were outside of the strike zone. And thus, the very passive nature of a typical Cavan Biggio at bat is now under scrutiny. Whereas it previously looked like Biggio could display the hitting skills to keep up a .250-.275 batting average with 20 home runs and 20 stolen bases, those assumptions seem to not be in the cards for him long term. Biggio has also been physically undermined by a stiff neck that has landed him on the IL twice here in 2021. My seasoned call on this is to not try to catch this falling knife.

Biggio’s neck and shoulder ailments look like they will be with him for the balance of this season, and his 7 home runs and 3 stolen bases year to date is not going to excite anyone. Biggio seems likely to stick on the free agent list until spring 2022. Take a pass on Biggio until Spring of 2022 and hope to catch him on the rebound then.

Why Veterans Should Join a Veteran’s Organization

This structure and support had met their lower-level physiological and safety needs. No longer will the military provide food, housing, healthcare, and similar resources. There are no military helpers drill sergeants, or unit leaders like the ones who were available when you transitioned to a new unit.

There is no Department of Defense organization in your hometown to assist you with completing your transition tasks. There are fewer peer, supervisors, family members, and colleagues with whom you can relate to during and after transition. However, this does not have to be the case.

There are many Veteran organizations out there ready to help complete the transition.

Those Veteran Service Organizations setup around the country such as the American Legion, Am Vets, and Veterans of Foreign Wars are there for help. These organizations

were started by veterans and are run by veterans. They are a military alumni network. One of the advantages of an alumni network is that those who have gone before are wiling to reach back and assist the next generation.

They are places where those who don the military uniform can come together and enjoy one of the things they enjoyed most about serving: people. They are built around bringing together individuals with a common background in a place where they can share camaraderie and develop relationships. In addition they are the best place to find what’s happening in the military and veteran communities.

It instructs you to “work around” those nagging, troublesome thoughts by Refocusing your attention on some useful, constructive, enjoyable activity, such as gardening or hiking. The key to the Refocus step is to do another behavior. When you do, you are repairing the broken gearshift in your brain. Your brain starts shifting more smoothly to other behaviors. The more you practice the Refocus step, the easier it becomes. That’s because your brain is beginning to function more efficiently.

The important thing is that whatever activity you choose to shift to, it must be something you enjoy doing. The objective is to pursue the activity for at least fifteen minutes. This is the fifteen-minute rule!

The key to Refocusing is to realize that you must go on to another behavior even though the OCD thought, or feeling is still present. You’re not going to let those thoughts or feelings determine what you do. There is no quick fix to make the feeling go away quickly. You must work around it. The ability to work around the OCD is a powerful weapon. When you do it, you actually change the way the

As you learn to manage your anxiety, your powers

of observation will improve.

You will develop a mind that is sensitive to subtle changes and able to see the implications of those changes. Typically, a person with OCD experiences the urge to perform a compulsion many times during a day. However, much time you are able to put between getting the urge and acting on it is time well spent, even if it’s only a few minutes. At the end of that period, it’s important that you reassess the bothersome urge and note any change in the intensity of the urge during the time you were able to hold it at bay. You will now have learned that you can control your behavioral response to the OCD thought.

Can Medicaid Place a Lien on My House?

Q: Can Medicaid place a lien on my house if my spouse is in a nursing home?

A:

The simple answer is no. So long as the house continues to be your primary residence, Medicaid cannot put a lien on the home.

Generally speaking, to qualify for nursing home Medicaid (also known as Chronic Care Medicaid), a Medicaid applicant can have up to $15,900.00, not counting tax-deferred retirement accounts – however the required minimum distribution from such accounts is counted as income. If the applicant is married, then the primary residence is an exempt asset so long as the spouse resides in the home. The exemption also applies if a minor child, disabled child, or a sibling with an equity interest lives in the home. Additionally, the Medicaid imposed equity limit on a primary residence, which is currently $906,000, does not apply under such circumstances.

However, there are still important planning tools to consider to protect the

home should you need Medicaid in the future, or to avoid a lien on the home at the death of you and your spouse. If you were to end up in a nursing home or pass away with the house still in you and your spouse’s names, the property will lose its exempt status. Without advanced planning, the choices are limited to paying privately for the facility; or selling your home and doing promissory note planning where approximately half of the sale proceeds stay protected and the other half paid to the facility. If you pass away, Medicaid can place on lien on anything passing through your estate. Even worse – if you own the house with right of survivorship with your spouse who is receiving Medicaid – the house passes back to the spouse as a non-exempt asset!

To avoid these less than ideal alternatives, you can transfer the property out of your name into an irrevocable trust, which provides for asset protection planning against Medicaid.

As you may be aware, nursing home

Medicaid imposes a lookback on transfers made within five years of applying for Medicaid. Transfers made within this time period by the applicant or spouse will create a penalty period in which Medicaid

will not cover the cost of care at the facility.

However, after five years, the asset is completely protected from Medicaid. By placing the home in an irrevocable trust now, you can start the clock on the five

years and prevent a lien on the home both during your lifetime and after death.

If you have children and planned on passing the home to them after your death, you may be wondering what the benefits are to creating a trust instead of transferring the property to your children now. Although transferring the property to your children will accomplish the same goal, there are many benefits to placing the property in trust. By transferring ownership to a trust, you will still be entitled to the exclusive use and occupancy of the home and maintain all tax benefits afforded to you – including the star exemption. Should you decide to sell the home during your lifetime, you are afforded a $250,000 capital gains exemption on the sale proceeds (or $500,000 for a couple). Additionally, you can avoid messy complications from your children’s divorce or creditors. Lastly, the property will receive a full step-up in cost basis at the owner’s death, saving your children from capital gains tax.

For example, if you bought the home for $100,000 and it is worth $600,000 at your death, your children’s’ cost basis is now $600,000. Should they sell it after inheriting the home at your death, they would pay no capital gains tax on the sale – except for any gain between your date of death and the sale. If you were to, instead, deed over the property during your lifetime, their cost basis is the same as yours, they would owe upwards of 30% capital gains tax, and they would not have the $250,000 capital gains exemption because they do not live in the home.

While trust ownership is a great option for many, every family is different and this particular method may not meet your specific needs and goals. You should always meet with an elder law attorney with extensive knowledge in the field of Medicaid planning, who can explain your options and determine the best route for you and your family.

BY DOMINICK FORTE With the fast pace of modern living most of us don’t spend much time thinking about angels. But back in the fourth century when the invading Visigoths stormed the Roman Empire and civil disorder and corruption had been at its peak people were thinking about angels.

They were asking serious questions.

The hottest debate revolved around a single issue. Were angels ever transformed into flesh and blood beings to perform earthly deeds? If angels did become physical beings that looked like ordinary men, what would they be like? How would you pick one out from among the people you come into contact with on a daily basis? Would he be extra good, a sweet angelic being?

Or would they be one of those evil, decadent fallen angels?

Look to the Book of Enoch, the texts of Origen, the most important theologian and biblical scholar of the early Greek church, and related Scripture and apocryphal writings,

including mythological texts and ancient artifacts. These are the keys to the evolution of men and angels.

These facts have been deliberately concealed from us for thousands of years.
