Suffolk County Receives Settlement in J & J Suit, First in a Series of Expected Opioid-Related Settlements

The statistics are staggering: opioidinvolved overdose fatalities in the United States in 2019 rose to 49,860, according to a report by the National Institute on Drug Abuse. That accounted for 70.6% of all drug-related deaths in the United States, prompting municipalities across the country to file multiple lawsuits against drug manufacturers and pharmaceuticals.

Suffolk County was the first municipality in the state, and the second municipality in the nation to commence action.

The lawsuits are coming to fruition, as New York State Attorney General Letitia announced last week a $230 million settlement with Johnson & Johnson, (J&J), for the company’s role in the nation’s opioid crisis. Rob Calarco, Suffolk County Legislature’s Presiding Officer and 7th District Legislator, detailed what this means for Suffolk County. “My understanding is that Suffolk County will be receiving better than 8 percent of the Johnson & Johnson settlement,” Calarco said in a telephone interview this week. That translates to an estimated $18 million, with provisions that money from this lawsuit be directed towards opioid-related costs associated with the pandemic, treatment, educational programming, intervention and other potential impacts. Calarco noted since the onset of the pandemic, numbers of opioidrelated overdose deaths continued to spiral upward.

Suffolk Legislators launched actions against J&J and numerous other entities responsible for the opioid epidemic spiraling out of control even before the New York State Attorney General’s Office. It was February 2, 2014 when Calarco introduced legislation to appoint a six-member

committee to explore the viability of legal action against drug manufacturers. The panel included representatives from the County Health Department, Law and Police departments, Budget Office, and Social Services. In addition to J&J, manufacturers named in the suit include Purdue Pharma and its affiliates, and members of the Seckler Family (owners of Purdue); Mallinckrodt, LLC and its affiliates; Teva Pharmaceuticals USA, Inc. and its affiliates; and Allergan Finance, LLC and its affiliates. Following the resolution, Calarco shepherded a resolution that authorized special counsel to launch legal actions against the parties.

The Legislature enlisted the services of the law firm Simmons Hanly Conroy, LLC to represent the County in the multipronged series of litigations on a contingency basis.

While the County will not be paying out of pocket to attorneys for litigation against drug manufacturers and affiliates, Calarco noted there are costs to the County that have been associated with the growing opioid epidemic. “The opioid crisis costs money in several ways,” Calarco said, adding, “There is a large societal cost - addiction problems, people not being as productive because of their addictions, the loss of life due to overdoses and, the County has 10,000 employees who receive health care from us who may have been affected.”

The J&J settlement is the first in what the County hopes will evolve into additional suits. The case commenced last week against Endo and Teva and distributors, and, Calarco said there are pending lawsuits with four larger pharmacies including Walgreens, CVS, Rite Aid and Walmart. “The crux of the case is that these are extremely addictive substances, and medications that used to be prescribed for end of life for the comfort of

the patient,” Calarco explained. But opioid use became more widespread as patients were given prescriptions for car accidents and sports injuries, and a multitude of other reasons. Increasing numbers of patients were becoming addicted, and when prescriptions were dropped from doctors’ offices, they sought opioids on the black market, with many eventually turning to heroin because it is cheaper than OxyContin and other pain narcotics. “The pharmaceutical companies did know opioids were highly addictive, they fudged the numbers, they had a responsibility to monitor prescriptions going out the door within a region and to red flag unusual activities,” Calarco said.

But pills going out the doors at pharmacies far exceeded what was reasonable based on the population, Calarco said, where people were ‘doctor shopping’ for multiple doctors to acquire multiple pills. “This activity,” Calarco said, “is something that should have been highlighted” by pharmacies.

“Pharmaceutical companies should be held accountable for the costs they have inflicted through their irresponsible and deceptive marketing, all in the name of making a profit for their shareholders,” Calarco said. “This (J&J) historical settlement and others that will hopefully follow will not bring back those who were victims of this epidemic, but it is a significant step forward in facilitating justice for the families they left behind.”

COUNTY Legislator Calarco announces imminent emergency action to dredge shoaling at the mouth of the Swan River. The shoaling, caused by severe storms, has become extremely dangerous making passage even in high tide difficult and at low tide impossible for most boats.

Despite not being on the designated high priority list by the Town of Brookhaven, the conditions prompted the county to seek emergency authorization to remove the ever-growing sandbar. In a very short period of time, the Department of Public Works was able to submit and receive permits from the United States Army Corps of Engineer and the New York Department of Environmental Conservation.

“My office worked closely with the offices of Senator Chuck Schumer and Governor Cuomo to obtain the permits from the ACOE and the NYS DEC. I want to thank them and the staff of the Department of Public Works for expediting this process, and as of yesterday, all the permits were approved.

environment,” said Presiding Officer Rob Calarco.

Calarco added “I am so happy

to announce this action, as I will ensure that all of the residents who keep or launch their boats

from the Swan River will be able to enjoy our waters this summer.”

Yesterday at the General Meeting of the Suffolk County Legislature, Legislator Nick Caracappa’s bill, IR 1408-2021 was adopted with a unanimous vote.

The intent of the resolution is to honor a former colleague of the Legislature, Tom Muratore, who passed away suddenly on

September 8, 2020. Pursuant to Section 215(1) of New York County Law, Farmingville Hills County Park will hereby be renamed “Thomas Muratore County Park.”

As the introductory resolution states, “it would be fitting to name Farmingville Hills County Park in honor of Thomas Muratore to acknowledge his contributions to

Legislator Caracappa, who serves the Fourth Legislative District where Muratore served previously, is very pleased with the outcome.

“It was a great day at the Suffolk County Legislature, where my bill to rename Farmingville Hills County Park in honor of my friend and a true public servant, Tom Muratore passed unanimously!

All in all, the event was a huge success with great food, great entertainment, and great company. Congratulations and a proclamation from Brookhaven Town Supervisor Ed Romaine was presented to the organization proclaiming June 19, 2021 DAR Day in Brookhaven Town.

Brookhaven Town Landfill Court Case Can Proceed!

Today the Supreme Court of the State of New York ruled in favor of the public and rejected all of Brookhaven Town’s legal defenses in their effort to silence the community and have the court dismiss 25 lawsuits for adverse health and quality of life impacts resulting from the Brookhaven Town Landfill.

The Court upheld the plaintiffs’ claims, including the strict liability claim which is based on the inherent dangerous operation of a landfill.

The 25 plaintiffs are seeking to recover damages for negligence

by the Town of Brookhaven causing injuries, wrongful death and nuisance claims due to the Brookhaven Landfill. The plaintiffs, both living and now deceased, are/were residents in the surrounding communities and/or employees of the local, public intermediate school Frank P. Long Intermediate School.

“In denying the Town’s motion the Court determined that there were enough facts justifying the case going forward. I am confident that the employees at the Frank P. Long school, the students and the residents in the

William Floyd High School Senior Joseph Mazzarella Earns Full-Tuition Army ROTC Scholarship

Service has been in Joseph Mazzarella’s blood from a young age going back to his days as a member of the Moriches Elementary School student council and extending throughout his time at William Floyd Middle School and now William Floyd High School through the myriad leadership roles he has undertaken along the way. Now, after high school graduation this Saturday, Joseph is about to embark on a new journey of service with a full-tuition Army ROTC scholarship to The Pennsylvania State University where he will major in supply chain management with a minor in military science. Joseph, a future member of the Penn State Class of 2025, will, after college graduation, commission as a second lieutenant and begin serving an eight-year commitment to the U.S. Army.

A lifelong resident attending William Floyd schools K-12, Joseph is a leader in every sense of the word as evidenced by maintaining stellar academics and participating in a plethora of extracurricular and volunteer activities. Throughout his academic career, he has challenged himself with a rigorous course load of advanced placement, honors and accelerated courses each year, and performed spectacularly, finishing ranked number 22 in his class. Earlier this school year, he also received a nomination to the U.S. Naval Academy from Senator Kirsten Gillibrand, one of only eight from Long Island for the Class of 2021.

Kerry Brewer, Joseph’s school counselor throughout high school, also extolled his leadership abilities.

“From the first time I met him, it was clear that Joseph is a young man who is destined for great things.

He has consistently proven to be a natural born leader who takes his responsibilities seriously. He is well-spoken, reliable and has a strong moral character. He is also highly motivated and intellectually gifted,” she added. Ms. Brewer’s credits Joseph’s success partially to his inquisitive nature and ability to reason and think things through.

As far as extracurricular activities, Joseph has enjoyed his time serving as a member of Student Government with stints as a class council member as a freshman and sophomore, followed by serving as vice president and president during his junior and senior years, respectively. He is also a dedicated member of the history club, serving as its public relations officer, has been a member of the National

Honor Society for all four years of high school and was a member of the Future Business Leaders of America as a junior, earning a spot in the state competition in the category “parliamentary procedure.” Along the same vein, he was a member of the award-winning YMCA Youth & Government program, serving as the statewide presiding officer as a junior and a senior with duties such as planning the conference, chairing the senate chamber and conducting parliamentary procedure. He also had the top two mock legislative bills at the state conference and was named a delegate to the federal Conference on National Affairs for his skill and effort.

Robert Feeney, the longtime Youth & Government advisor, describes Joseph as a “quality and gifted individual” who leads with “empathy.” Mr. Feeney believes that Joseph’s “competitive abilities will ensure his success both in and out of the classroom.” Speaking of his time as a member of Youth & Government, Mr. Feeney added that Joseph is a “bright, articulate and passionate debater able to persuade a chamber to his position…he has developed into a strong leader who has gained the support of his peers throughout the state, and who recognizes [in the context of governance] that it is important to build consensus in reaching decisions.”

Joseph has also left his mark on William Floyd in athletics – playing soccer and helping to lead many of his teams as the captain – junior varsity (9th-10th grade) and varsity (11th-12th grade), as well as being a member of the lacrosse team. He also played for the varsity football team as the kicker during his junior year.

In addition to his extracurricular and academic records, Joseph is active in volunteer service – in school as president of Billy Floyd’s Closet, a school-wide charitable organization that donates coats, school supplies and other supplies for students who need them, and assists with costs for senior year activities and events. He is also an active volunteer at the Kent Animal Shelter, where he volunteers to walk the shelter dogs while they wait to be adopted.

“I have had a strong inclination to dedicate myself to service from a young age,” said Joseph, who believes that leadership is among the most important qualities that one can develop. He tries to lead by example with his peers and for students following after him. He believes

that they should know that success comes with patience, hard work and the drive to achieve one’s goals. He lives by the saying, ‘It’s nice to be important, but it’s more important to be nice.’ Joseph added, “Leadership does not have to come with a title. It is as simple as being nice to people, listening to their ideas, making decisions and solving problems.”

Joseph credits his parents as being his biggest supporters and role models, and added that William Floyd has also been instrumental in his success.

“I can’t express how grateful I am to have been a student at William Floyd and grown up in this community,” said Joseph. “It is a special place that I will forever hold close to my heart.

No Free Lunch

The NYS Elder Parole Bill Didn’t Pass for Good Reason; All Crime is not Created Equal.

Those people old enough to remember mimeographs remember that sweet smell of freshly printed dittos. While technology has rendered those machines obsolete, the halls of New York State and local county governments are alive with the sweet smell of freshly printed federal cash.

The proposed Elder Parole Bill before the New York State Legislature failed to pass for good reason, it treats every incarcerated person the same, regardless of the crime they committed. If passed, the Elder Parole legislation would give a green light to all incarcerated people aged 55 and older to go before the NYS Parole Board for release consideration, regardless of their crime, as long as they have served 15 years of their sentence – even if they have not served their minimum sentence.

Advocates in support of the Elder Parole Bill argue that every offender should be treated the same, and that if passed, the law would not allow for offenders to be released, but would instead give them an opportunity to plead their case before the Parole Board.

If that were to happen, then victims, surviving parents and families of those who were victimized would have to argue their case every two years before the Parole Board as well – in fact, maybe decades before they would have had to, depending upon the original sentence that offender received.

The proposed law would in essence be clawing back on the original sentence and granting those violent offenders who committed horrific crimes eligibility for parole hearings every two years – requiring victims, surviving family members, and in some cases, entire communities to relive horrific traumas in ongoing fights to continue to keep violent predators behind bars, when in fact they should have never been eligible for that Parole hearing in the first place, but for this new law.

So much money has been sent by Washington that it seems to have erased the memories of how the State and counties stood on brink of fiscal disaster. But it should not erase yours and you should be asking, rather demanding, to know how these financially strapped government entities are going to exist once that newly found funding is gone. The time to act is now.

Federal money may have provided a lifeline, but fundamental change must occur.

Inflation is here and is going to get worse. The housing market cannot sustain these high values and before long we will be on the backside of the cycle that we have seen before.

History is going to repeat itself, and the seemingly endless spending in Washington is going to drive inflation and the national debt even higher. You can argue the merits of any program, but at the end of the day you’re left with two inescapable truths: Government cannot be everything to everyone and there is no such thing as a free lunch.

Crimes are differentiated in the Penal Code for good reason. As the severity and societal impact of the crime increases, so too does the crime degree and subsequent potential sentence when convicted of a crime.

There is a stark difference between an opioid addicted offender in need of treatment who commits a non-violent property crime to feed an addiction, and a sexual predator who abducts, rapes, murders, and dismembers a child, or someone who executes a police or other law enforcement officer, or violent gang members who hunt down teenage girls and hack them to death with machetes, as occurred here in Suffolk County. These offenders cannot and should never be treated the same for purposes of

justice is a term that refers to the laws, procedures, institutions, and policies that come together before, during, and after the commission of a crime. Farming Seaweed in Suffolk

BY KARL GROSSMAN “Kelp Help,” is the title of an article in this summer’s issue of Sierra magazine, the publication of the Sierra Club. Its subtitle: “Can farming seaweed put the brakes on climate change?”

sugar kelp appears, said Dr. Gobler, to contain compounds lethal to the red algae that can infect shellfish and cause sickness, indeed death, in people. Kelp can be used as fertilizer.

“Seaweed agriculture,” the academic publication Frontiers in Marine Science has reported, is “the fastest-growing component of global food production.”

And, moreover, it’s edible. Attending a “kelp-tasting” sponsored by the Cornell Cooperative Extension Marine Program at Noah’s restaurant in Greenport at which she received “a much-needed grounding in the current state of help farming,” Charity Robey, the food columnist at The Shelter Island Reporter, “learned a number of new ways to use kelp in cooking.”

Seaweed farming has come on strong worldwide, and it is being developed now in Suffolk County as a way to counter a number of severe environmental problems.

Dr. Christopher Gobler, co-director of the Center for Clean Water Technology at Stony Brook University and a professor within the university’s School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences, commented last month about how a small area of kelp can absorb as much nitrogen as several of the new Innovative/Advanced (I/A) septic systems being installed to reduce nitrogen emanating from cesspools. As to climate change, he notes how kelp soaks up carbon dioxide.

His team has been harvesting kelp from test “farms” in Moriches Bay, Great South Bay, Peconic Bay and in the Long Island Sound.

The kelp of choice—sugar kelp—is native to Long Island. A brown rubbery plant, it can grow underwater in fronds up to 15 feet long and astonishingly quickly. Also,

“Toasted kelp,” Ms. Robey related, “is like a blue-corn-tortilla-chip-of-the-sea. It is full of umami, a taste that is also associated with meat and mushrooms…” Chef Noah Schwartz also, “For the starter…wrapped a tenderized strip of savory kelp around a chunk of seared yellow fin tuna. Definitely a crowd-pleaser.”

Frontiers in Marine Science declared that “seaweed agriculture...offers a slate of opportunities to mitigate” climate change.

The largest seaweed-producing nations are China, Indonesia and the Philippines.

“The Upshot.” Sierra says: “Seaweed farming has promise. In addition to sequestering carbon, it can provide habitat for fish and mitigate local effects of ocean acidification.”

It has so far planted 45 million oysters many of which have been growing in a reef the project built, “the largest reef in New York Harbor history.” Declares the project: “It took less than 100 years for New Yorkers to wipe out the oyster population in New York Harbor. And, the Billion Oyster Project is rebuilding this natural resource and habitat.”

Gleyber the Bust?

BY TOM BARTON What is wrong with the Yankees shortstop, or should we correct that right away and say, what is wrong with the Yankees second baseman who is playing shortstop? Gleyber Torres is an enigma at this point because we all can see the problem, but no one seems to have a solution.

Torres was once the most highly touted prospect in baseball. He was ranked #1 by most minor league observers and scouts, and his “can’t miss” label seemed like it was just a matter of when, never if. The Yanks had a rare sell mode years back and traded their dominant closer, Aroldis Chapman, to the Cubs for Torres and the baseball world applauded the foresight of General Manager Brian Cashman. The move looked even better when Torres exploded for 38

home runs and 90 RBI at 22 years old.

Then something happened. It is almost like Michael Jordan’s Space Jam nemesis’s the MonStars took away Torres’ talent because since that season he hasn’t looked anything like the same player. He came into camp last year during the Covid shortened season admittedly out of shape and looked unmotivated. In 42 games he hit just 3 home runs and had a .243 average. Many fans gave him a pass, using Covid as an excuse. Now we are in a new season. Torres once again is struggling at the the plate and it’s only getting worse. He has just 3 home runs in 250+ at bats, a .242 average and his defense has gotten even worse.

Torres is mired in a slump that for the past few weeks he hasn’t hit even .100.

The talent in major league baseball has never been uniform. There is no equal dispersal when it comes to the best of the young prospects. Things very definitely come in waves, and sometimes it is feast or famine. In today’s major league baseball talent pool, the corner infield spots are a little bare. Not that first base is barren at the moment with Vlad Guerrero Jr. developing into a star, but the position is clearly not as deep as it was in the 1990’s when guys like Frank Thomas, Jeff Bagwell, Will Clark and others were coming around every street corner. At this very moment, there is a bumper crop of terrific young catchers working their way up to the major leagues, and if you play in a format that requires you to use (2) catchers, pay attention, especially if you are in a dynasty format as well. I much prefer two catcher leagues, as I feel it separates the men from the boys.

Look no further than inside of Baseball America’s Top 50 Prospects at the moment.

Six (6) terrific young catchers are amongst the Top 50 prospects and there are quite a few more who haven’t cracked that rarified list yet, but you read my column to get in on these guys early, so let’s get going.

• Adley Rutschman (2) – once Wander Franco sheds his prospect tag and loses his rookie status, Rutschman will be coveted as the best young prospect in the game. A rarity who will be a mega-offensive force while also playing Gold Glove caliber defense. He is the face of the Baltimore

Orioles future and he may even be better than originally advertised as the #1 pick of the 2019 baseball draft.

• Francisco Alvarez (19) – For whatever the reason, I see the Mets screwing this up and including him in a trade for a middle reliever. That’s just their modus operandi.

Witness Jarred Kelenic. Alvarez will need at least two more complete seasons of experience, but he will be worth the wait.

He has rare middle of the order power for a catcher and it is a reality that he and Rutschman have been scooped up in most dynasty formats.

So the question is what do the Yankees do with Gleybar? One thought is ship him off for a new SS (Trevor Story) or buy one in the offseason. (Seagar, Correa, Story will all be available). The other thought is send him back to the minors. The coaching in the lower level is outstanding and it can get him to regain confidence, or destroy it even more. Then there is the Aaron Boone method and that is let him play out of position, hit in the middle of the lineup, watch him make errors and strike out, and do nothing.

I am not sure what the answer is but the answer is not sit on yours hands and wait. Torres is only 24 years old, and maybe he breaks out, but can the Yankees afford to wait and hope when other options are clearly there?

Many dynasty teams added Bart to their teams in the last 2 seasons and he is being let go from a decent share of them thanks to his struggles. The phenomenal season that Buster Posey is having doesn’t help matters.

Still, Bart can hit and hit with tremendous power and he is a terrific defensive catcher.

Be patient here. This is one of the rarest of rare things. A catcher that could be a lock for 30 home runs annually.

• Gabriel Moreno (32) – Not a typo, Moreno is hitting .373 as we pull into the July 4th holiday. His OPS is at 1.092. He is overshadowed by the boatload of talent that the Toronto Blue Jays currently possess, so use that to your advantage. Stash Moreno in all dynasty formats. This could be a player

The fact that he started out the 2021 season in a Low Class-A minor league is a good one though, and could be a signal that Oakland wants to develop him as a catcher and is fully committed. • Korey Lee, Astros – This 22 year old catcher was just promoted to Double-AA, after spending 29 games in an advanced Class-A league. In 12 games since his Double-AA promotion he has already hit 6 home runs. GRAB THIS GUY WHILE YOU CAN!

Independence Day, the Fourth of July

BY REV. FREDERICK MILLER. PH.D. Independence Day is an important national holiday and a symbol of patriotism. Actually Independence Day represents the birth of our nation. On July 4, 1776, the 13 colonies claimed there independence from England, an event which eventually led to the formation of the United States.

The Continental Congress declared that the thirteen American colonies were no longer subject (subordinate) to the monarch of Britain, King George III, and were now united, free, and independent states. The Congress had voted to declare independence two days earlier, July 2, but it was not declared until July 4th. That resolution was actually proposed by Richard Henry Lee of Virginia back in June.

After voting for independence, Congress turned its attention to the Declaration of Independence, a statement explaining the decision,

which was led by Thomas Jefferson.

The Declaration of Independence features the famous lines: “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal and have “certain unalienable rights” – among them “life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.”

BY DOMINICK FORTE St. Thomas Aquinas wrote: “Angels transcend every religion, every philosophy, every creed. In fact, angels have no religion as we know it, as their existence precedes every religious system that has ever existed on earth.”

Versions of the word “angel” occur in the languages of many different cultures. The Greek word angelos translates to messenger and is commonly considered the basis for modern day literary interpretations.

Angelos derives from the Hebrew term mal’ahk which literally means “the shadow side of God,” and there is the Latin word angelus, which also refers to a type of messenger.

Angiras, from the ancient Sanskrit, means “divine spirit” and the Persian term angaros translates to “courier.”

The official Latin term that eventually became affixed to any traditional religious view of angels is Angelus Occidentalis, which describes any celestial servant of the leader of a monotheistic religion

such as Christianity, Judaism, or Islam.

The concept of angels has been with us since before we began recorded history and certainly predates the formation of any organized religion. Angels appear in the writings of many different cultures, where they are invariably depicted as winged, powerful beings who bear a close resemblance to humans and mediate between God and man. In Judeo-Christian literature, angels predate the creation of Earth, as Lucifer’s Great Rebellion occurred sometime previous to the seven days God spent creating the world.

Central to our understanding of angels is the fundamental belief that God’s love overflows into his creation of the world. Enterprising minds wishing to know about these spiritual creatures will discover that angels are part of the vast unseen portion of God’s creation, that they diligently assist with the redemption

Belief in Angels of mankind, and that they will be participants in the new creation when Christ returns in glory.

Our approach should be that we live in a created universe of things visible and invisible. The visible things include the material aspect of

creation, namely those that we can perceive with our senses. Things invisible include the spiritual aspect

of creation which elude our senses.

We tend to accept a scientific and technological view of the universe; a view that leaves no room for the

possible existence of angels and their active presence in the world.

The modern mind tends to be skeptical regarding what it cannot prove through empirical evidence and accepts only what can be physically measured. Measuring the boundaries of the world according to the five senses alone leads to the confined conclusion that only a material world exists.

Those who believe in and acknowledge a spiritual world step beyond the boundaries of the physical world. Both faith and reason point to a spiritual dimension populated with angels.

Yet, even with the assistance of faith and reason, we cannot see angels unless they reveal themselves to us.

As the naturally visible world seems more real to us than the invisible world, we need to make a constant commitment to render it real to ourselves, especially if we wish to pass from visible and created things to the invisible things of God.

OBITUARY

Helen Frances Chartuk, Long-Time Bay Area Resident, Traveler and Community Volunteer Salvation Army donation pots at many local establishments for years and spent many a cold day ringing the salvation bell during the holiday season. Her efforts earned her recognition by the Army for 50 years of service. “For a half century, she helped the homeless, fed the hungry and touched countless lives through her commitment to help others,” said Collette Masom of East Patchogue, a Salvation Army Captain.

“She was a kind and generous soul loved by all.”

Long-time Bay Area resident, traveler and community volunteer, Helen Frances Chartuk, passed away peacefully June 28 just two days before her 86th birthday.

Adored by her family and friends as Fran, she was well known as an original member of the Moriches Bay Historical Society having managed the organization’s thrift shop for more than 25 years, raising hundreds of thousands of dollars to renovate the Havens Homestead and museum.

“Fran was always busy in the community and taking care of many friends and neighbors who needed her help,” said her son, Robert of Center Moriches. “She was very kind and generous with her time. We will miss her terribly.”

Fran supported the emergency personnel at the Sunrise Fires in 1995 and offered comfort at numerous memorial services. She also volunteered with the Friends of the Center Moriches Library and as secretary to the Manorville Historical Society.

An avid treasure hunter, Fran was a charter member of the Long Island Treasure Hunters Club and located many items, including a number of class rings which she researched and returned to their owners. “She was in all the papers for reuniting the owner with a Center Moriches High School ring that had gone missing for almost 40 years,” Robert said. “Another time, a man flew from California to retrieve a college ring he had lost at Cupsogue beach 30 years earlier. “She was also a collector of antique marbles and had many vintage toys and games.”

“Fran enjoyed an extensive collection of Phoenix Bird China and beautiful Roseville pottery,” said her daughter Sydney Chartuk of Claymont, DE. “She was into the

The home had just undergone a ninemonth expansion project and she wanted the honor of being the first in the gorgeous new facility. Many thanks to her neighbor, Brookhaven Supervisor Ed Romaine, and his staff for arranging a temporary permit just for her.

DOLORES YVONNE HOUCK, 89, of Mastic Beach, passed away on June 7, 2021 at Oasis Skilled Nursing Home. Dolores was born in the Bronx to Elias and Elsie Gomes. She was a long-time resident of Mastic Beach for the past sixty-five years.

She enjoyed crocheting and knitting, made blankets for Veterans and babies, and other charities. She was a Yankee Baseball fan, an active member of the Homemakers Unit 33, a devoted member of St. Jude’s RC Church, she enjoyed country music, dancing, and playing cards. She was predeceased by her beloved husband Deward to whom she was married for sixty-three years; Her beloved sons Bruce and Charles predeceased her.

She was the loving mother of Deward Jr. (Rebecca) Susan (Eugene) Frohnhoefer, Eric, Doreen, Keith (Helen), Wayne (Kathy), Laura (Walter) Langdon. She was the proud and cherished grandmother of thirteen and great grandmother of six. She was the loving sister to Gerald Gomes. Family and friends came together on Monday at Roma Funeral Home in Shirley to remember and celebrate her life. A Mass was offered at St. Jude’s RC Church in Mastic Beach on Tuesday and interment followed at Long Island National Cemetery, Pinelawn.

There are so many wonderful, talented people in this world and many of them who live right here in our beautiful community. Caring, loving, generous people who willingly give of themselves to make others happy.

Dolores Houck was one of those loving people who gave of herself without reservation.

She was a devoted wife to her beloved husband, a loving mother to her nine children, thirteen grandchildren and six great grandchildren. As if that was not enough, she managed to find time to be a devoted member of her church and community. She was an active member of Homemakers Unit 33.

I knew a dedicated group of women who spent weeks on crafting the most beautiful blankets that they in turn would donate to various causes like Birthright for babies, Veterans organizations, and the sick and elderly.

It may not seem like such a profound gift, but I can tell you from my own personal experience, when my husband Connie was very ill, he was

generously given one of those blankets. To this day I still have it and cherish it because it represents love. These blankets are a labor of love and lucky the person who is the recipient of this gift. Anyone can buy a store-bought item; it takes time, effort, and care to make something from scratch. Dolores was that kind of human being.

She was a woman of faith, love, and devotion.

Her love and pride in her family, her town and her parish of St. Jude is a testament to the woman she was. Dolores led by example. She loved life, country music and was a diehard Yankees Baseball fan. She grew up in an era of hard work and personal sacrifice during the Great Depression. Her fortitude in the face of challenge was her strength.

While Dolores Yvonne Houck will be sorely missed by all who were blessed to know her, she lives on in the hearts and minds of her loving family and friends. May the blankets she so devotedly made to keep others safe and warm bring her safely to Paradise.
