GOP Primary Picks for November Elections
By Barbara LaMonica The voters have spoken in the New York GOP Primary, and the results are in: United States Congressman Lee Zeldin, 42, will face off against Governor Kathy Hochul, 63, in the November 8, 2022 election. In the more local but also hotly contested race for Suffolk County Clerk, Smithtown Town Clerk Vincent Puleo scored a victory over long time incumbent Suffolk County Clerk, Judith Pascale. Zeldin prevailed in a crowded field that included Andrew Giuliani, (son of former New York City Mayor Rudolph Giuliani), Harry Wilson, (corporate turnaround specialist) who ran an aggressive televised ad campaign that targeted Zeldin, and Rob Astorino (former Westchester County Executive), who was defeated in his first run for governor four years ago. But with a 21+ point Primary victory on June 28th before an energized and excited throng of supporters, Zeldin asked, "Are we ready to fire Kathy Hochul?" to which supporters responded in the affirmative. A determinedt o -w i n -i n - N o v e m b e r Zeldin continued: "This November in the State of New York, one-party rule will end; we will restore balance and common sense!" New York State Republican Chairperson, Nick Langworthy, said in a prepared statement:
"Republican nominee Lee Zeldin crushed the Primary elections with a 21 point victory. No one worked harder to earn this nomination, and Lee proved it to the voters from Buffalo all the way to Montauk." Calling the 2022 Republican Primary race "spirited," Langworthy noted that Giuliani, Astorino and Wilson are "coming together and united behind Zeldin" as they "set their sights" on the main event in November. "New York can't afford four more years of oneparty rule," Langworthy said, "and Lee Zeldin will continue his winning streak in November." Langworthy underscored that the Zeldin-Esposito ticket will restore safety, common sense and affordability to New York. Reached for comment by phone on the heels of a sweeping 61% Primary win, Puleo exuded confidence in the outcome, and the look ahead to the November electios. "I had every confidence in the world I would win the Primary," Puleo told South Shore Press. Acknowledging an army of supporters, Puleo said, "First, I need to thank the Republican and Conservative parties, Chairmen Garcia and Torres), and all of the volunteers and committee members for everything they did, and my wife, Beverly. The day of the Primary I didn't sit down; I was busy making phone calls right to the end, and,"

Puleo added, "I thank each and every voter who came out to vote, and I truly appreciate their confidence in me and support." Anticipating victory again in the November election, Puleo said he will bring his sixteen and a half years of experience to
the County Clerk's office, touting a $450,000 grant he was successful in securing to enhance electronic filings in the Town clerk's office in Smithtown. "I'm going to work to speed up the process for people to get their title insurance and mortgage insurance," Puleo added.
Puleo is a 50 year member of the Nesconstt Fire Department. He served as chief in 1991-1992, and has been serving as fire Commissioner since 1993. Puleo and his wife, Beverly, live in Nesconstt where he has resided for 68 years. He has three stepsons and eight grandchildren.
Congressman Lee Zeldin, (RCD1), responded to our South Shore Press inquiry during his post-primary victory: "I commend all of the candidates in this primary for running a hard-fought race and look forward to working together to Fire Kathy Hochul and Save our State. This is a rescue mission to end our attacks on our safety, wallets, freedoms and kids' education," Zeldin said. He underscored that "Losing is not an option," adding, "Kathy Hochul has now been warned that the people of New York are coming for her job at the ballot box this November. We will secure our streets. We will make New York more affordable again. We will fight for our kids and New York’s schools. We will fight to preserve freedom for our families to stay here and be strong. We are all in, and we will take nothing for granted in all 62 counties in New York State. No county is too large. No county is too small. Kathy Hochul-we are coming for your job!"

Valedictorian Ian Hua, who is graduating with a 104.07 weighted grade point average, will be attending Harvard University in the fall! His area of study will be economics and government as majors are not declared at Harvard until the sophomore year. During his time at William Floyd, Ian served as the student body president and a member of the William Floyd High School student government and senior class council. During his senior year, he earned the rank of Eagle Scout with Troop 138, completing his service project brightening the grounds of William Floyd Elementary School, his former school. Ian attained state-level honors in music (flute), being selected to the NYSBDA All-State Honor Band and as a NYSSMA AllState alternate.
Salutatorian Adam Schultzer will be taking a gap year and is in the process of applying for internships at research facilities and institutes of higher learning such as Brookhaven National Laboratory. After his gap year, Adam plans on pursuing a degree in computer science. Throughout his time at William Floyd High School, Adam excelled in his academics and achieved a 102.79 weighted grade point average.
Ian was a member of the pep band, the wind ensemble, jazz band (piano) and a member of the pit orchestra (piano) with various OCEAN Arts theater productions. He was also a member of the varsity tennis team (earned AllLeague honors), co-president of the National Honor Society, served as an attorney and assembly member with the award-winning Youth & Government program and is a member of the Future Business Leaders of America and will be competing nationally this June. During his senior year, Ian was selected as a National Merit Scholar finalist and winner. He was also named homecoming prince and during his spare time worked at Walmart as an electronics/ entertainment sales associate. He attended William Floyd schools K-12 including William Floyd Elementary School and William Floyd Middle School. Ian added, “I’m super thankful for all of my friends, family, school, community, and everyone for being there to support me throughout my entire school career and making the journey so much more fulfilling.”
Ian was also was a member of the William Floyd Robotics Team #287, serving as its lead programmer. This year the Robotics team twice won the General Motors “Industrial Design Award” at the New York Tech Valley Regional and the SBPLI Long Island Regional #2. He was a member of the award-winning Youth & Government program receiving an “outstanding debater” award, was a member of the theater/ pit orchestra as the lead trumpet, is a member of the National Honor Society, the Future Business Leaders of America and will be competing nationally this June, the Science Honor Society, student government, class council and a member of the jazz band. Adam has spent his entire K-12 career in William Floyd schools – previously attending William Floyd Elementary School and William Floyd Middle School.

She earned a GPA of 104.59 and will be attending Georgetown University in the fall. Kaylie has been part of the Varsity Softball (team captain, All-County & All-State), Varsity Tennis (team captain, All-League), French Honor Society (president), Mu Alpha Theta Math Honor Society (vice president), Rho Kappa Social Studies Honor Society (president), National Honor Society, and Science Honor Society. She has been a leader throughout all of high school in her school and community.
Alyssa Morano earned a GPA of 103.66. She is the president of the Science Honor Society, Captain of the Varsity Girls Tennis Team, Vice President of the Robotics Team. She has also been part of the Varsity softball team for 5 years and drama club for 7 years. Alyssa has earned All League Awards for Varsity Softball and Varsity Tennis. Bellport High School
Bellport High School Class of 2022 Looks to the Future The accomplishments of the Bellport High School Class of 2022 were celebrated during a graduation ceremony on June 24. As family and friends looked on, the class was praised for overcoming the pandemic era and working to achieve important milestones in their educational careers. Welcoming the students was Principal Erika Della Rosa. During her introductory comments, Della Rosa spoke about the uniqueness of the South Country Central School District and the challenges faced by the graduating class, particularly COVID-19. Despite this, she noted, “You learned to make lemonade out of lemons on a regular basis. That is a testament to your strength and courage.” She added, “I challenge you to remember these past four years and know that learning from the obstacles you faced will keep you on track.” Essayist Eric Ciavatta discussed memories of the past 13 years. “We made it and it wasn’t like ‘High School Musical’ at all, but here we are on our graduation day about to walk out. How quickly that time has passed,” he said. “High school was not easy, but we persevered through many challenges.” During his salutatory address, Calvin Pedatella offered advice to the graduates that was once offered to him as a PAL football player. “Each of you has the ability to succeed at the next level if you are willing to work hard and find ways to improve,” he said. “We are a diverse group, and despite our differences, we are graduating together. We can all enter the next phase of our lives knowing that we always have the support of the Bellport community. Let’s make sure each of us takes a little part of Bellport with us.” Rounding out the speeches was valedictorian Rianna Raghunandan, who spoke about the unknowns of the future. “As much of the future may hold many unknowns, [it also] holds incredible potential — the kind of potential I have seen in all of you seniors,” she said. “We are moving forward in our lives with direction and motivation.” She concluded, “We are starting new paths, but this school where we have grown will always be a part of us, and we should never forget the place we call home as we soar into the future.” After the celebratory speeches, Superintendent of Schools Dr. Joseph Giani certified the diplomas and announced that the seniors had completed the requirements for graduation. Board President E. Anne Hayes then led the students in the traditional moving of the tassel, symbolizing that the seniors were now alumni of the South Country Central School District.

Raghunandan is an AP Scholar with Honor and holds a National Hispanic Recognition Award. She is treasurer of the Tri-M Music Honor Society and a member of the National, Math and Science honor societies, as well as the Art Club, Spanish Club, Book Club and Key Club. She plays the violin in both the concert and pit orchestras. In addition, she was accepted into the QuestBridge College Prep Scholars Program and selected as a finalist in the prestigious QuestBridge National College Match Program. Outside of school, she volunteers at the Boys and Girls Club. She plans to attend Yale University in the fall to study biological sciences on a pre-med track.
Pedatella is an AP Scholar and a member of the National, Math and Science honor societies. He is a decorated athlete as a member of his school’s wrestling and football teams. For the former, he is a two-time All-League wrestler and a Scholar-Athlete. For the latter, he earned All-County, All-Long Island and AllState honors and was named a Suffolk County News 12 Scholar Athlete. Most recently, he was named the winner of the Top Scholar Athlete Award from the Suffolk County chapter of the National Football Foundation. In school, he volunteers with Athletes Helping Athletes, and outside of school, he helps at Eileen’s Home soup kitchen. Samuel Lorenzo is the Patchogue-Medford High School Class of 2022 Valedictorian. He is very active in community service with Key Club, previously serving as Division 2 Lieutenant Governor on the New York District Board. Sam has participated in scientific research programs with Adelphi University, Stony Brook University, and Brookhaven National Laboratory. He also plays oboe and English horn as a member of the Wind Ensemble and AllSchool Musical Pit Ensemble and is the president of Tri-M Music Honor Society. In the fall, Sam will be attending Brown University, studying Chemical Biology on a PreMedical track. He intends to attend medical school following his undergraduate studies, pursuing a career as a cardiologist. Sofia Pfeffer Ranked #1 leading the class of 2022 with an outstanding grade point average of 107.478. This young lady will not only graduate as an AP Scholar with Distinction but will graduate with a Mastery in both Math and Science and has met all the necessary requirements for an AP Capstone diploma. Having superb math and science grades she was also the recipient of the Rensselaer Medal in her Junior year. This young lady has been very dedicated to our ESM Varsity Soccer Team as well as the Skills Unlimited Soccer Academy. She has helped younger children through both the ESM Specialized Sports Club as well as volunteering as a camp counselor for a summer youth soccer camp. Our Valedictorian is a member of the Varsity Leaders Club and a member of three Honor Societies namely the National, World Languages and English Honor Societies. She has participated in “Kicks for Cancer” and has been involved with ESM’s initiative to provide books to underprivileged children. This young lady’s philosophy on life is that “commitment, resilience, perseverance will take you far!” Sofia will be majoring in Biology at Boston College.
Joseph Thomas Morello Ranked #2 in the class with a GPA of 106.169, this AP Scholar with Distinction will be graduating with an Advanced Regents Diploma with Honors and with Mastery in Science and is a promising candidate for the AP Capstone diploma. This young man’s greatest strengths reflect in his mathematical and science abilities and for this reason was nominated and awarded the University of Rochester’s ‘Xerox Award’ in his junior year. He is an accomplished musician who plays the bass and has been in our Honors Orchestra and Honors Wind Ensemble since 9th grade. He has been an ESM 1st stand bass player and became an all-state bass player as well as serving as the treasurer of the afterschool Chamber Orchestra in which he is a member. This young gentleman has been on our Varsity Football team all of high school, becoming an all-county football player and the captain of the team in both 11th and 12th grade. Using his football skills in a generous manner by organizing and coaching football practices for students in 6th grade and older during the early covid pandemic. He has also made many contributions as a member of both the National and Tri-Music Honor Societies. His philosophy of life is “don’t pray for an easy life, pray for the strength to endure a difficult one!” With an interest in helping others with modern technologies within the healthcare field he would like to major in biomedical engineering at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.

Laura Alt will be attending UMass Amherst majoring in Biology and minoring in Theater. She has been a dedicated cast member in Longwood’s theater productions throughout high school, currently serving as Student Council secretary and formerly as class secretary and representative in 9th, 10th, and 11th grade. Laura is a National Honor Society and Tri-M member. She has won numerous academic awards for exceptional achievement in her courses. Laura is also actively involved in theater and dance outside of school and volunteers her time at a food pantry.
Adrian Morel is the Longwood High School, Salutatorian. Adrian will be attending Stony Brook University in the fall where he will be majoring in Business Management. He has been a student in the Early College Program since starting High school and a dedicated member of the High School Band and The National Honor Society. Adrian has been awarded numerous honors over the years that include academic achievements in Science, Math, Foreign Language, and English. He was also the recipient of the National Hispanic Heritage Award and recognized as an AP Scholar with Distinction. Outside of school Adrian volunteers with his local Church and is employed at Target. There are not enough wonderful things to say about Adrian. He is an extremely bright and amazing young man who will be very successful in his future endeavors.

Gavin Ehlers is the Valedictorian of the Westhampton Beach High School Class of 2022. Gavin has satisfied the requirements for the AP Capstone Diploma and the Advanced Regents Diploma by taking 15 AP courses. He also received a perfect score on his ACT. Along with this, Gavin has been nominated as a finalist in the National Merit Scholarship Program. Gavin also earned his way into The National Honor Society, as well as our Math, Science and World Language Honor Society.
Madison Quinn is the Salutatorian of the Westhampton Beach High School Class of 2022. Madison has earned countless accolades over her four years including AP Scholar with Distinction, recipient of the AP Capstone designation, winner of the Bausch and Lomb Science Award, and acceptance into the National Honor Society, as well as, the math and science honor societies.
Running is a huge part of who Gavin is. Throughout high school, some of Gavin’s greatest running accomplishments were winning the County Title in Cross Country, receiving the Scholar Athlete award and breaking two school records during his senior year. While the majority of Gavin’s running is competitive, he also takes part in the Rolling Thunder Special Needs Track Club. Here, he volunteers his time helping other young adults at their track practice and assists them with fun activities. Recently Gavin led the Virtual Enterprise team as the Chief Technology Officer. The team finished the competition by winning 1st place in the country over 1,200 teams nationwide. As Chief Technology Officer, Gavin built and maintained the firm's website where people were able to learn about the firm and other VE students from across the globe. Gavin was also part of the QuickBooks team that won 3rd place in the U.S. at the national departmental QuickBooks Competition.

Madison spends a great deal of time as a mentor and role model for younger students as a volunteer coach, at afterschool programs, and as a summer camp counselor through her church. She is also frequently requested as a peer tutor by students as well as her teachers, and active in many other community endeavors. In her spare time, Madison is an athlete, an Irish Step Dancer and a lifeguard. She will be attending Georgetown University in the fall and plans on majoring in Political Science and Economics.
