In Race for NYS Governor Zeldin Wins Straw Poll Scales $4 Million in Campaign Contributions

Congressman Lee Zeldin, (R, NY-1), has been putting the pedal to the metal in his gubernatorial bid to unseat incumbent, Andrew Cuomo in the November 2022 elections. Zeldin has been raking in public fundraising campaign contributions and nonbinding endorsements in counties across all corners of the state. He raised over $4 million in three months, with another $3.198 million already in the coffers. According to a press release from Zeldin, funding sources for his gubernatorial bid include over 9,000 donors from all 62 counties in New York with over 12,500 donations of which 94 percent amount to $250 or less each. Cuomo, in contrast, reported $2.3 million in receipts during that same period. Commenting over the weekend on mounting support he has been receiving, Zeldin said, “I am honored to be receiving such widespread support across New York. This (straw poll)

vote underscored that the Republican Party is united in this mission to fire Andrew Cuomo and save our state.”

Over the last three months, Zeldin’s growing army of supporters has built a groundswell of grassroots support from every corner of the state.

In a recent straw poll conducted in Albany by the New York State Republican Party of all county GOP committees on who the party’s gubernatorial nominee should be in 2022, Zeldin garnered 85% of the weighted vote, making him the apparent favorite to receive the Republican Party’s nomination. The straw poll was taken early to help the party rally around Zeldin and benefit fundraising efforts. After winning the straw poll on June 28, Zeldin was named “the presumptive gubernatorial nominee” by the Republican Party.

But those straw poll votes are nonbinding because they can change prior to, or at the Convention, and, while

candidates must receive 25% of the vote in order to get on the primary ballot at Convention 2022 next spring, if a candidate garners 50% of votes, that candidate would likely become the party’s designee. With Andrew Guiliani and Rob Astorino in the mix as contenders for the state’s top seat, New Yorkers will determine who the strongest candidate is in the June 2022 primary. Asked why he made his announcement to run for governor as early as he chose, Zeldin said, “Andrew Cuomo should’ve resigned if for no other reason, than his deadly nursing home order and coverup, but,” Zeldin added, “he continues to outdo himself with the allegations of abuse, coverups and personal gain - like a $5.1 million self congratulatory book deal - at the expense of everyday New Yorkers.

Meanwhile,” Zeldin continued, “the failed liberal policies coming out of Albany are making New Yorkers hit their breaking points, and on the verge of leaving the state permanently.”

Zeldin’s tenacity at calling Cuomo out on a myriad of hot button issues has propelled his candidacy into the spotlight. Numerous claims of sexual harassment against Cuomo, the spike in crime under his tenure, the decline in job opportunities, and the cash bail reform law instituted earlier this year under Cuomo’s tenure are among the governor’s vulnerabilities, and Zeldin plans to hold him accountable for during the race. Said Zeldin, “Everywhere I go in New York, I hear from New Yorkers that they’re tired of the attacks on their freedoms, their wallets and their safety. They want our law enforcement officers to be supported more, not less, they want

Shrine of St. Jude Rededication

On Saturday, the Mastic Beach, Mastic, and Shirley community came together at St. Jude Church for a grand opening ceremony.

First came a Religious Dedication Ceremony at 1PM where Bishop Robert Coyle consecrated the Shrine of St. Jude and then the Grand Opening Ceremony at 2PM which was attended by a host of elected officials including Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone, Senator Alexis Weik, Legislator Jim Mazzarella, Brookhaven Town Supervisor Ed Romaine and WFSD School Board President Bob Vecchio.

For 71 seasons, The Gateway has been the very heartbeat of the best of live theatre and entertainment on Long Island’s South Shore. With 2020 in the rear view mirror and the end of COVID-19 in sight, The Gateway has just ushered in its 72nd season with an itinerary of entertainment that offers something for everyone.

According to Scot Allan, The Gateway’s Director of Marketing & Public Relations, this season opened with ‘Songs For A New World’, co-starring Alyssa Wray, fresh off American Idol’s Top 10, with Christian Douglas, Jordan Goodsell, Caleb Mitchell, Mary Kate Moore and Morgan Billings Smith. “’Songs For A New World’ is a new musical review about the one moment before it all becomes clear, and focuses around songs of growth and empowerment; about examining life, love and the choices that we make. “It’s lovely and inspirational and tells the story about what happens when something unexpected happens in life and you have to pivot,” explains Allan likening it to a nod to the COVID era.

“It’s the perfect way to start anew in 2021 because this is something we’ve all been through, and we did this together,” Allan continues. The musical opened to three

preview performances followed by rave reviews on its July 17th opening night.

The Gateway navigated through the pandemic, emerging stronger than in seasons past. Says Allan of the 2020 COVID year: “It’s been hard, yet we’ve been lucky in that we have such a large outdoor space where we were able to keep people on the property and we featured an outdoor drive-in. It was incumbent upon us about how to open, and in what stages.” Following CDC and State-mandated protocols, The Gateway first opened at 25% capacity coupled with social distancing and masks, eventually opening to 50% capacity, changing tactics and capacity limits in stages in accordance with state and federal guidelines. It was just last month when The Gateway and other businesses got the green light to open operations at 100% capacity. “At this time,” Allan said, “everyone is asked to wear mask inside the building if they are not vaccinated.” This protocol is instituted on the honor system, Allan said, noting that The Gateway officials “do reserve the right to spot check.”

As Season 72 unfolds, patrons and guests of The Gateway have a packed, versatile season of entertainment to look forward to. “We’re excited about a rock and roll production, ‘Million Dollar

Quartet’ we’re calling a legendary night of rock and roll,” Allan said, “which is a jam session/drama (production) about the one night Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis and Carl Perkins spent together.” The legendary night of rock and roll opens August 4 with the finale

performance August 21. The Gateway will be staging the post-COVID first musical to open at the Patchogue Theatre on Main Street in Patchogue. The curtain rises on Disney’s “Newsies” production August 25 and closes September 11.

The ever-popular Haunted House is returning to the grounds of The Gateway in October, dates to be announced. The Gateway will be wrapping up 2021 back on the stage of the Patchogue Theatre with its breathtaking extravaganza of Holiday Spectacular on Ice which opens December 17 and runs though New Year’s Day! The Gateway’s success to surviving the pandemic was, in Allan’s words, “an uphill battle.” It was the will and tenacity of The Gateway’s management and Executive Artistic Director Paul Allan, working in conjunction with the Actor’s Equity Association, that helped create, resuscitate and launch the exhilarating season ahead. Scot Allan, who coincidentally is not related to Paul Allan, explains, “Our cast are members of the Actor’s Equity Association, they’re Broadway professionals, so when Broadway shut down, all contracts were shut down, but we have our Equity actors back, and it’s very exciting!”

Mercedes asked. “We should be ahead of the game but instead we hear information second hand. I’m all for making Brookhaven Town beautiful, but every business here is going to be lost.”

A proposal for the Town of Brookhaven to seek an RFQ, (Request for Qualifications), in Mastic Beach is drawing mixed reactions from business and property owners. From a logistics standpoint, the Neighborhood Road Redevelopment Area, (NRRA), encompasses Neighborhood Road west from Commack Road, east to Doris Drive and streets north including Victoria and Linden places.

The NRRA excludes the municipallyowned parcel at the former site of the Mastic Beach Village Hall where the Mastic-Moriches-Shirley Public Library Annex is slated for construction, and the Mastic Beach Ambulance Headquarters. The RFQ for a developer to redevelop the area will task those interested in creating a comprehensive plan and will showcase a variety of land uses including retail, restaurants and housing to replace “decaying and blighted” structures. Brookhaven Town Sixth District Councilman Dan Panico said the move has been a long time coming: “In the advent of Suffolk County announcing plans going forward with the Forge River Sewer District, and given the effort we put into cleaning up Mastic Beach, including the blight study, now is the time to solicit proposals from the development community.”

Responses for the RFQ are due in to the town’s Purchasing Department by September 13, 2021.

The town’s Request for Qualifications is drawing mixed reaction from locals, both pro and con. Ava Torres, secretary for the Mastic Beach Chamber of Commerce, and owner of Linsa Torr’s Place, said information from the town about an RFQ has not been forthcoming.

“There are no political leaders in Brookhaven who have come to speak to business owners directly.

My question is, ‘Why is everything so secretive and businesses are not included in what is best for the area?’

Everything’s done under the cloak of secrecy.” Torres asks about the fate

of longtime businesses in the area if a developer comes in and eminent domain becomes part of the process.

“The reality is, there are six or seven business owners who, over the course of 20 to 60 years, have given jobs to people and have assisted in every civic effort. The town has sent RFQ’s to the world looking for people who have millions like they did in the Ronkonkoma Hub, and in the event of eminent domain, they will give property owners half or less than what the property is worth, and what happens to business owners who rent? How does this serve the business owners, and what will happen to people who have invested their savings into these businesses?”

Torres asked. “To be perfectly honest, I don’t know how this is going to affect us. I don’t want to hear lies about purchasing or beautifying our buildings.”

Mercedes Meat Market, which offers prime meats to customers, is in the heart of the proposed geographic

area for the RFQ. Owner Dawn Mercedes, who established her business there eight years ago, also expressed skepticism. “My question is, are there going to be open meetings, or is this a secret?” Mercedes said.

“Brookhaven Town should talk to business owners, because what happens to us if an offer comes in? I

Not so, says Panico. “If Brookhaven Town is successful, we will work with existing business owners to try to incorporate them into the new businesses and put these businesses into newly developed buildings,” Panico said. “For a long time, the people of Mastic Beach desired a downtown area that they can be proud of,” Panico continued. “I’ve spoken at a number of community and civic association meetings where business owners were present, and the town held a press conference over a year ago about the blight study.”

Asked about eminent domain, Panico said, “It’s too early to say exactly how or what will occur. At this point it’s only conjecture because there are no proposals. We will address eminent domain as time goes on.”

In a telephone interview last weekend, Frank DeLustro, president of the Mastic Beach Property Owners Association said, “To be perfectly honest, I don’t think anyone’s read the RFQ. We are a very diverse organization with different opinions.

We want to see what the plans are that are being put out by developers, because we don’t know how this is going to affect businesses that have been here 30 years or more. I hope the

developer will give existing businesses options to be included in the plans.”

DeLustro said plans to establish the sewer district “is a good thing for Mastic Beach and will accelerate plans,” then added, “I don’t think anyone’s doubting the town’s efforts, but there are still a lot of unknowns.”

Pattersquash Creek Civic Association commented, “At this point the town is looking for developers, and we’re going to wait and see who comes forward. I think something had to be done here,” Fugarino said. “As hard as all the governmental levels have tried in the past, we’d be in a different place with sewers because without them, there is little hope that we could see progress.”

Mitch Pally of the Long Island Builders Institute, (LIBI), which represents 615 members, said the RFQ was sent to its membership.

“This is a great step for the Town of Brookhaven and the people of Mastic Beach who have been waiting for this opportunity,” Pally said. “The ability for Suffolk County to provide sewers will open parcels for development that were never before open, and now this community can be just like Patchogue.” Pally underscored the necessity for sewers in order for improvements to be made in Mastic Beach. “With the lack of sewers, you can do nothing,” Pally said. “Now, Mastic and Mastic Beach will have both leadership and its own sewage treatment plant.” Pally added, “This has been in all the local papers and it’s not something that happened yesterday. The local community is well aware of what is going to happen.”

Panico is optimistic this move

will attract a developer to move improvement plans forward for Mastic Beach. “We hope to get responses that enable us to write a new positive chapter in the area, attract businesses and give residents a downtown area for which they can be proud. For far too long, people have talked about getting it done and now we’ve taken steps to entice the type of redevelopment that has been sought after to finally occur. In the meantime,” Panico continued, “we will continue to crack down on housing issues, protect our environment and invest in our parks. This has been a long time in the making, and we can either continue talking about it or we’re going to do it, and I’m taking effective steps to do it.”

In a press release, Brookhaven Town Supervisor Ed Romaine stated, “A comprehensive plan to redevelop the Mastic Beach business district along with Neighborhood Road has been a long time coming, and I commend Councilman Panico for his determination to keep it on track.

Now, with the approval of the Forge River Sewer District, we can finally move ahead with this transformative project that will create a bright future for the Mastic Beach community.”

Three Men Arrested Following Shooting

Suffolk County Police arrested three men following a shooting in Center Moriches on Sunday.

Following a verbal altercation, two men shot each other in the parking lot of Lidl Supermarket, located at 812 Montauk Highway in Center Moriches, at approximately 4:05 p.m.

Both were transported to local hospitals for treatment, one

for critical injuries and one for serious injuries.

Two other men, who were with them during the shooting, fled the scene and were later apprehended in the vicinity of the incident.

Three of the men were charged with Criminal Possession of a Weapon 2nd Degree.

The two men who were not injured are being held overnight at the Third Precinct and are scheduled to be arraigned at First District Court in Central Islip on July 19.

A criminal charge is an accusation. A defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.

Be on the Look-Out for DMV Email Phishing Scam

Suffolk County Clerk Judy Pascale

Suffolk County Clerk Judy Pascale would like to bring to the attention of Suffolk County residents a recently released phishing scam where fictitious e-mails are sent to motorists that appear to be from the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles (NYSDMV).

NYSDMV have advised that all recipients of the e-mail to delete it immediately and be sure not to forward it.

If the message does not feel right, chances are, it is not. · Be suspicious of links embedded in an unsolicited email.

This latest scheme involves an e-mail stating that you have outstanding traffic infractions that must be paid within 48-hours of receipt. You are required to click on a link to either pay the fine or dispute the violations or your driver’s license may be revoked. Once the link is clicked malicious software is downloaded to your computer.

NYSDMV has also offered some helpful tips to mitigate phishing scams and ways to keep your personal date safe: · Exercise caution with all email communications you receive, including those that purport to be from a trusted entity. Inspect the sender’s information to confirm the email was generated from a legitimate source.

Town Awareness or Public Safety Dear Editor, I am hoping this letter acts as a notice of intent to bring the attention to the Town of Brookhaven, and its Department of Highway Maintenance the potential hazard and danger of leaving large stones/rocks on the towns Right-Of-Way along the edge of the towns paved road and grass. These large rocks should be removed off the towns ROW area by the Town of Brookhaven or any property owner who may have placed the rocks there. Suffolk’s Action on Opioids A National Catalyst

BY KARL GROSSMAN “Suffolk County was the first in the state to bring litigation,” noted Rob Calarco, presiding officer of the Suffolk County Legislature, about the lawsuit the county brought in 2016 against multiple defendants it charged in connection with the plague of opioids that has caused many deaths in Suffolk and elsewhere.

Nassau County and the New York State attorney general joined in the lawsuit.

Thereafter, other governments in New York State got involved in it.

And Suffolk’s legal initiative “precipitated other municipalities across the country to bring their own lawsuits in their own jurisdictions or in federal court,” said Mr. Calarco.

What national media described as a “landmark trial” began on the lawsuit on June 29th in Central Islip. It was “the first opioid case in the country where a jury rather than a judge will decide the outcome,” pointed out The New York Times. There were so many defendants that the auditorium of Touro College’s Jacob D. Fuchsberg Law Center became a Supreme Court trial court.

The lawsuit, as The Times put it, “targeted all links in the opioid supply chain.” Then, in recent weeks, “one by one, major companies named in suit have settled.”

They paid doctors—who are identified—to “lend their names to books and articles, and give speeches” and be “on committees that developed treatment guidelines that strongly encouraged the use of opioids.”

They “used, funded, and directed numerous Front Groups.” And they “specifically targeted their marketing at two vulnerable population—the elderly and veterans,” it continues.

Last week, New York Attorney General Letitia James announced a $1.1 billion settlement with defendants AmericsourceBergen, Cardinal Health and the McKesson Corp., three of the nation’s top opioid distributors. Suffolk County is to receive between $87 million and $106 million from this. This followed settlements with defendants including Johnson & Johnson from which Suffolk will receive $19.8 and Purdue/Sackler family, $10.4 million to $19.6 million.

Meanwhile, also last week a $26 billion national opioid settlement was announced.

The Suffolk-initiated lawsuit was a catalyst, said Mr. Calarco. “We started the ball rolling,” And “fearing the facts of the case coming out at the trial,” the companies settled.

The funds will be used, said Mr. Calarco, for “educational programming, treatment, and other related efforts to remedy the impacts of this crisis” of opioid addiction.

So tragically, “we can’t bring back the people lost.”

Meanwhile, the trial will continue for a few companies not settling.

It opened with the attorney for Suffolk County, Jayne Conroy, speaking about the natural beauty of Suffolk, but she said: “There is terrible darkness here.

The evidence is going to show that more prescription opioids were shipped to Suffolk County than any other county in New York.”

The companies were charged with a “public nuisance.” More accurately: it has been a terrible crime. This was civil litigation not involving criminal charges.

Asked last week at a press conference whether she was considering bringing criminal charges against any opioid makers or distributors, Attorney General James said the settlements are “silent on that.”

Criminal charges could be brought. They should be. Giving up even huge amounts of their companies’ money isn’t comparable to executives and officers being jailed for causing the deaths of 500,000 people in the United States in the past two decades.

“Defendants caused this disaster together,” declared a state filing (available

online). They were involved in a “scheme to expand the opioids market through a predatory campaign of lies, payoffs, and high-pressure sales tactics.”

They “collectively spent billions of dollars on this fraudulent marketing campaign over the last two decades,” it said. They were involved in numerous misrepresentations, it declares, itemizing many. They “spent hundreds of millions of dollars on unbranded advertising in order to create the appearance that unbiased and impartial medical information supported

Suffolk’s action on opioids parallels it being a governmental pioneer decades ago challenging the tobacco industry with first-in-the-nation legislation on smoking.

Delegations from the Tobacco Institute came before the Suffolk Legislature and with straight faces denied any link between smoking and cancer. This industry-funded outfit was dissolved in 1998 as part of a national “Tobacco Master Settlement Agreement.” We know about governmental corruption. The tobacco and opioid industries—prime examples of corporate corruption.

BY TOM BARTON The New York Yankees have turned into the Railbirds and that has become a good thing.

The Railbirds are the New York Yankees minor league team and they have been dominating the minor leagues this year. That team, unlike the varsity team, sits in first place and has all the excitement that fans are clamouring for in the Bronx. Because of COVID issues, and general injuries, the big squad had to call up a slew of minor leaguers, and with them they brought excitement and energy.

Estevan Florial is the name that fans have been screaming for ever since the Yanks lost Aaron Hicks to a season ending injury. Florial

was called up and hit a home run in his first game and stole a base the next. Greg Allen has been running the bases like we haven’t seen from anyone in pinstripes for years, and they have gotten plenty of contributions from other young, exciting up and comers. New York needed a spark and maybe this is what they needed to get the enthusiasm up for the dog days of summer as they begin their climb back into contention.

The problem is though for every good action, there seems to be a negative with this team. Sure Florial looks good, but the reality is he is batting close to .200 at AAA. The exciting new Railbirds are

The guy in your fantasy baseball league who deserves to win the championship is invariably the guy who addresses all of his teams’ current concerns but also looks a few steps down the road. Fantasy baseball is never a plug and play affair. A lot of small and sometimes large tweaks need to be put in place to bring a winning team across the finish line. The 5-man IL in my mixed ESPN league is stuffed with at least 5 hurt players for every team in the league. Those of us waiting on Mike Trout to make his return from an 8-week IL stint due to a calf strain at least have an approximate date of his return and can plan accordingly.

Owners of Nick Castellanos know that he has missed multiple games since the All-Star break and learned that a CT scan revealed a right wrist microfracture and that he’s unable to swing a bat. This is purgatory for fantasy owners since he has not been placed on the IL yet but continues to not appear in games and is essentially a dead spot in the lineup. Since Castellanos has hit .329 season-to-date he has also been a valuable contributor.

Let’s look at a few of these situations throughout baseball.

• Aristedes Aquino has been getting

most of the at bats in Castellanos’ absence and he remains an intriguing option. Aquino had an August 2019 for the ages but then fell below the Mendoza line in September the next month. Still, in 56 games played and 205 at bats in 2019, Aquino had hit 19 home runs and drew 16 walks against 60 strikeouts. The .259 BA and .891 OPS were fairly impressive for a young hitter who hadn’t exactly received a lot of coverage from Baseball Prospectus or Baseball America. I think Aquino is worth a shot to plug in here for a few weeks as he has hit 6 home runs in 57 at bats as we go to press this morning and his OPS is an outstanding .990.

This is high risk stuff here, as Aquino struggled in 2020 to a .623 OPS. • Derek Hill was the recipient of increased playing time after the All-Star Break and he can be a very valuable addition to add stolen bases to your squad. Derek Hill is rostered in an amazingly low 0.3% of ESPN leagues but watch for that figure to rise as owners take note of the fact that he has 6 stolen bases in 26 at bats this season.

That is a tremendous number in such a small sample of at bats but the speed is legit. His sprint speed times are some of the finest in all of major league baseball.

fun at the big league level, but then you have what happened to Brooks Kriske in Fenway last week. Kriske single handedly gave a win away and all the Bronx faithful could do was watch and cringe at the performance. The youngsters still haven’t helped the much maligned bullpen, they can’t eat up innings, and while the running and fun style works in short bursts the reality is New York needs its stars back.

Luckily Judge and Gio return in a few days.

The Yankees were pronounced dead by many around baseball but maybe the infusion of the Railbirds energy can lift them from their season long sleep. Let’s hope they

can extend those good feelings and Boone can mix and match when

they star players begin to return.

Stash Suggestions GO GRAB THIS PLAYER. At 25 years of age, and with numerous injuries in the last few years, this guy lost valuable development time to COVID during 2020. The time to add this player is now.

• The Miami Marlins seem likely sellers going into the trading deadline.

Starling Marte seems likely to be moved. Jesus Sanchez was placed on the IL for undisclosed reasons, as this is the

new term for either a positive COVID test or contact tracing back to someone exposed to COVID. Once Sanchez is cleared to return, a much more clear path to full time playing status is there for Sanchez and he had heated up prior to the All-Star break.

• Texas Rangers 3B Josh Jung is just one of those intriguing situations that sometimes I allow instinct to guide me on. Jung had a fracture of his foot slow him down at the start of the season, but

debuted in Double-AA this season and was hitting .279 BA with an .824 OPS. Of course the arbitration start time stands in his way, as Baltimore seems to be proceeding with Adley Rutschman at a very slow pace for the same reason.

But when Charlie Culberson and Brock Holt is what is sitting ahead of you at the major league level, I do like Jung’s chances of getting a call up to the Show in September to see what he can do.

The first of the trade deadline moves was made on July 22nd when the Minnesota Twins traded Nelson Cruz to the Tampa Bay Rays for a pair of minor league pitching prospects.

What is interesting about this deal is that the two pitchers they gave to Minnesota have a reasonable chance of pitching for Minnesota this year.

Joe Ryan acquired in the trade had K’ed 75 batters and walked only 10 in 57 innings at Triple AAA this year. It is important to note though that Ryan did not come into the season ranked as one of Tampa Bays’ Top 10 prospects and Tampa didn’t need to part with either Shane Baz or Luis Patino. Tampa Bay remains one of the best run franchises in Major League Baseball and their depth is quite enviable.

Focusing on service to veterans, service members and communities, the Legion evolved from a group of war-weary veterans of World War I into one of the most influential nonprofit groups in the United States.

In that same year a resolution was passed in support of the Boy Scouts of America.

In 1921 The Legion’s efforts resulted in the creation of the U.S. Veterans Bureau, now named the Veterans Administration, which the Legion continues to lobby for adequate funding to cover medical, disability, education and other benefits for veterans. In 1923 the Legion drafted the first “Flag Code” that Congress adopted in 1942. In 1943, the Legion’s National Commander wrote a draft on the “GI Bill of Rights” that

President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed into law the original GI Bill, or the Servicemen’s Readjustment Act, ushering in monumental changes in U.S. society. Higher education becomes democratized after 8 million veterans go to school on the GI Bill, get jobs, buy houses in the suburbs and raise families. This bill is considered the Legion’s single greatest legislative achievement.

In 1950 the Legion contributed funds to the field of mental health, thereby playing a key role in launching the National Association for Mental Health. In 1966 The Legion voiced great concern over the fate of prisoners of war in Vietnam.

In 1982 The Legion presented a $1 million check to the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund for the construction of the Wall in Washington. In 1983 they announced its sponsorship of an independent study on the effect

of the exposure to Agent Orange on Vietnam War veterans. In 1989 they elevate the Veterans Administration to a Cabinet level as the Department of Veteran Affairs (VA), arguing that

the veterans deserve representation at the highest levels of government.

In 1990 they filed a suit against the federal government for failure to conduct a Congress mandated study

about the effects of Agent Orange on the veterans who served in Vietnam.

The Legion fought hard in 2004, lobbying for the elimination of the Disabled Veterans Tax with the passage of PL 108-375 that eliminates the 10 year phase in for 100% service connected retirees, allowing them to immediately begin receiving both retired pay and VA disability payments. In 2005 the Legion lobbied successfully to remove from VA funding legislation administrationproposed increase in VA prescription co-payments and institution of user fee for Priority Group 8 veterans using VA health facilities. Efforts focused on legislation to provide mandatory, vice discretionary, funding of VA health care. There were many other legislative bills that the Legion acted on. In addition the Legion took a lot of actions for our youth that will be covered in Part 2.

When the perfectly calm day sneaks up on you while you are day-dreaming and turns into a snarly, life-stealing beast, all your training rushes to the front of the “screen.” But sometimes, all your skill isn’t going to get you home.

And sometimes the boat itself is what betrays you as she threatens to slip away beneath you. You are going to be hard to find – unless you are sending a personal signal to the satellite who will call the USCG for you. This column is about that.

Trained in Saving Yourself

In the past, we’ve written about the various locator devices and how they were evolving. One of those devices, the “PPIRB” (pea-purr-b) is a Personal EPIRB. This is what we now call a “PLB” or Personal Locator Beacon.

You wear it on your person. It also has the built-in GPS. When you attain a coxswain rating in the USCG Auxiliary (the person responsible for the boat, the crew and the mission), the USCG gives you a PLB. “Even if you go hiking, take this with you. If you get lost, we’ve got too much invested in you not to come get you!” Be aware that there are private companies now that offer devices that can locate you while you are underway and offer rescue notification services. I

From Ocean Navigator, 3/16/2010 I read everything about the sea that I can get my hands on – hard copy, electronic, notes in bottles… Back in 2010, Ocean Navigator magazine published a story

by Fredrick Gary Hareland about this same subject and I saved it as an object lesson. Mr Hareland recounted in his story the following about the crew of a 57’ vessel making way from Hong Kong to Phuket when disaster struck: “In closing, I must inform you that our crew and passengers on board that 57 footer were all rescued thanks to the master’s back-up PLB. Turns out the EPIRB failed to deploy, but that little handheld PLB got the alert through and the victims are toasting it and each other while retelling their recent adventure.”

Back in the day…

The old model EPIRBs transmitted on dual frequencies of 121.5 and 243 megahertz (MHZ). This was hopefully picked up by passing planes and satellites. It could take 4-6 hours for someone or something to pass overhead before it reached the USCG. Also, the footprint that you were within could be as much as 12 square nautical miles.

That is a lot of real estate and a lot of water to cover. On the USCG website (www.navcen.uscg.gov/marcomms/ gmdss), it says that the 121.5/243MHZ devices are “no longer recommended.”

The State of the Art…

Interestingly, the 121.5MHZ frequency is favored for radio direction finding (RDF). So the newest EPIRBs now transmit simultaneously on 406MHZ and 121.5MHZ. The 406 reduces the footprint to 1 square nautical mile. And the 406MHZ is heard by satellites all over the world and,

within an hour, the USCG RCC will have commenced coming to your aid.

And the rescuers will also be looking for your EPIRB’s 121.5MHZ signal with their RDF gear. In heavy seas, that may very well be the difference between passing right by you while you are in the trough – or knowing that you are just over the next wave…

But My Boat Has An EPIRB

Good! I just hope you don’t fall off the boat… Or, as the tale below details, your EPIRB battery, which you dutifully replaced (as I just did!) by shipping it to the lowest-cost provider of battery replacement services that could be found on the internet, doesn’t fail at the time that it is most needed

Redundancy will look very cheap and very smart, if/as/ when… and they fit in your pocket.

Teacher’s Story Corner began as a volunteer project from district’s resident elementary school teachers who wanted to volunteer time over the summer to encourage kids to keep reading. “Summer slide”, as it is known, is when children have the summer off and don’t participate in any learning activities. They return to school having to review up to three months’ worth of academic progress.

Some children drop a reading level or even two without consistent practice. Calling on the expertise of the librarians in our children’s department, the teachers came up with a program called Teacher’s Story Corner. Once a week on the same day throughout the

summer, teachers would come in and read stories to children.

Word spread quickly, and soon the story times were pulling in 30-50 children plus their parents at a time. Teachers worked with librarians to pick out their favorite books to read.

“Teacher’s Story Corner is about encouraging kids to read for fun throughout their summer break. It’s cool to see their teacher, and at the same time we are reinforcing critical reading skills,” says one teacher reader. According to Children’s department staff, “It’s great that teachers help encourage kids to read by being here, and the local PTO’s help to boost the program and reading at their home school by publicizing it

In treatment, the client is first assured that the diagnosis is just OCD. It is just the brain sending false messages. Research shows that OCD is associated with a biochemical problem that causes the underside of the front part of the brain to overload.

In short, the client is suffering from Brain Lock. The brain has become stuck in an inappropriate groove. The key to unlocking the brain is behavior therapy, and there are four steps to follow, Relabel, Reattribute, Refocus and Revalue.

Over the next four weeks, I will share this approach to combatting OCD with you, beginning with Relabeling.

Relabeling simply means calling unwanted thoughts and urges by their real names ----- obsessive thoughts and compulsive urges.

These are not just uncomfortable feelings like “maybe it’s dirty,”

but gnawing and unremitting obsessions. Not just bothersome urges to check for the fourth or fifth time, but brutal, compulsive urges.

This is war, and the enemy is OCD. In fighting back it is critical to keep in mind what this enemy really is. The person with OCD has a powerful weapon: the knowledge that “It’s not me --- it’s OCD.” He or she must work constantly to prevent confusing the true self with the voice of OCD. All well and good, you may say, but OCD has a mind of its own. It won’t shut up. To this, researchers reply, “Yes it will, but it takes time.”

Praying for OCD to go away won’t make it happen, nor will idle and futile cursing!

It is vital to understand that the simple act of Relabeling will not make your OCD disappear. But when you see this enemy for what

The excitement of seeing beloved teachers over the summer break is a draw for kids and parents. Children love staying in touch with teachers they had the previous year, and other kids come to the story times hoping to get to know who might become their future teacher and classmates.

Library board member and William Floyd teacher Wendy Gross has been instrumental in organizing this fun program and is also a regular reader.

Teacher’s Story Corner is at the library Children’s Department Every Wednesday July 7 to August 18 from 6-6:30 and

again from 6:30 – 7:00 p.m.

calendar on each date. No registration is required just drop in. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Let’s Talk About Obsessive Compulsive Disorder it is, OCD, you sap its strength and you, in turn, become stronger.

In time it won’t matter that much to you whether the bothersome thoughts totally go away because you are not going to act on them.

Furthermore, the more you are able to dismiss the importance of your OCD, the more you will feel in control and the more it will go away. On the other hand, the more you focus on it, wishing and hoping and begging for it to leave you alone, the more intense and overpowering the feelings will become.

KEY POINTS TO REMEMBER

• Relabeling means calling the intrusive thoughts and behaviors what they really are: obsessions and compulsions.

• Relabeling won’t make unwanted thoughts and urges go away immediately, but it will prepare

you to change your behavioral responses.

• When you change your behavior, you change your brain.

• The key to success is to strengthen your “Impartial Spectator,” your

ability to stand outside yourself and observe your actions with mindful awareness.

Azriel is able to choose how the journey of spirits from the deceased is handled. For those who have led a righteous life he holds an apple from the Tree of Life before them to gently entice the soul from the body. In response God turned the waters of the Nile into blood and followed each refusal of the Pharoah with another plague.

He sent frogs, gnats, flies, death of livestock, boils, hail, locusts, and darkness. For the final plague Azriel stole away the first-born of Egypt. This act was so devastating that the Pharoah finally agreed to let the Hebrews go.

Azriel carries a black scythe inscribed with golden runes that he uses to store the souls of the dead. Written in gold on the scythe is a quote from the Book of Exodus in angelic script: “And he shall pass over your door, and you shall not suffer the Destroyer to come in and smite thee.”

Azriel’s scythe is not intended as a weapon but as a channeling device for spiritual energy.

Azriel travels from soul to soul collecting them for their spiritual restoration in Heaven. Azriel pours them out of the scythe and back into their original resting places. Afterwards the souls are judged and sent to their respective afterlives.

Azriel wears no armor and uses no protective devices because he

A common issue that arises during the administration of an estate concerns assets that were transferred close to death.

Administrator of her estate and you are made aware of these transfers or changes, you must investigate to determine whether it is worthwhile to seek recovery of these assets on behalf of the estate. The rationale for the investigation is that the pre-death transfer resulted in the assets passing outside of the probate or administration estate and therefore the estate beneficiaries are deprived of the asset.

If the Executor/Administrator decides that it is worthwhile to attempt to recover these assets, there are two proceedings within the Surrogate’s Court Procedure Act (SCPA) Section 2103 that are relevant. The first part of the proceeding is an inquiry. This proceeding brings the respondent (someone who is believed to have property that belongs to the estate) in front of the court for questioning in a deposition. The purpose of this inquiry is to determine if the respondent is
