Remembering TWA Flight 800, July 17, 1996

In the summer of 1996, I was staying at a beach house in Mastic Beach with a panoramic waterfront view of Narrow Bay and Fire Island. A little after sundown, the phone rang. It was my boss with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the bureaucratic parent of the National Weather Service where I worked, calling from Washington. “There was a plane crash,” he told me. “I think somewhere near you.” I went outside to take a look. Exiting into the steamy night air, I was confronted by a scene from a disaster movie. “Holy smokes,” I told him. “The sky’s all lit up and there are helicopters and planes all over the place.” A police boat sped across the bay.

“Looks like something really bad happened.”

“It was an airliner, a TWA flight,” said my boss. “It’s on the news.” White flares illuminated the sky and the horizon pulsed with an eerie orange glow. I heard the drone of engines and one after another, a boat or aircraft would scream by. I took in the scene as long as I could before the mosquitos drove me back inside.

TWA Flight 800, heading for Paris, had crashed in a great fireball into the ocean shortly after takeoff from John F. Kennedy International Airport. The phone jarred me awake the next morning, my boss again.

“Bob, NOAA has a ship on its way to the crash site. Its specialty is locating obstructions in harbors and channels to create maps for navigation. They’re going to use it to find the plane. I’m making arrangements for you to take a news crew from ABC out there to meet the ship. It’ll be a great opportunity to show how NOAA can help.” I was to meet a local boat captain that afternoon to take me and the crew out to rendezvous with our ship. I had never met Captain Wain before, but he recognized me. Our fathers were friends a long time ago during World War II and it turns out, my Dad was the captain’s godfather. His boat, built for sport fishing, had a nice cruising speed and we quickly passed through Moriches Inlet into the ocean. Having a small boat on the bay for

Captain Wain hailed the NOAA ship Rude (pronounced Rudy) on the radio and speeding toward it, we saw the many different boats now engaged not in a search and rescue mission, but in recovery. At that point, hope for anyone surviving such a fall from the sky was gone. “Area off limits!

What’s your business here?” yelled a sailor from a Coast Guard boat that suddenly appeared from the setting sun, his arm cocked as if he was itching to draw his pistol.

Everyone looked at me. “We’re with NOAA,” I shouted across the gap. “That’s our ship the Rude. We’re meeting up with it.” The cameraman filmed the encounter. “Turn off the camera, sir,” the officer barked, his hand closing in on the gun. He scowled at us until the cameraman jammed the equipment back into its case. “Stand by,” he ordered as he turned to squawk into his radio. “You have

no clearance,” he shot back. “Please leave the area immediately.” “I have orders from Washington. Your headquarters should clear us,” I said. He barked back into his radio. “Headquarters has no knowledge.

I need you to leave now.” The newsmen were crestfallen. They knew they were the only reporters on the scene and were anticipating a major scoop. “Have them call my supervisor,” I yelled, annunciating the phone number. “Stand by.” Minutes passed with the boat rising up and down like a pendulum in slow motion. Scorched pieces of foam and fabric floated by and the sticky smell of jet fuel hung in the air. My stomach churned. “You’re clear,” our captor finally came back, not much friendlier. “Proceed with caution.”

Out at the Flight 800 crash site, Captain Wain pulled us alongside our ship, the Rude, and with the summer waves running about two feet, it was a little tricky transferring the people and gear to the bigger ship. The Captain said he would stay nearby and to

radio when we were ready to go back. As he pulled away, his wake churned a strange swatch of silver and gold sparkles in the water which grabbed our attention like an omen. “We’re right on top of the wreckage,” Captain Sam DeBow told us up on the bridge. “It’s spread out pretty wide, about 130 feet deep.” The newsmen hung on his every word. “We use side-scan sonar to locate whatever’s on the bottom,” DeBow explained, his face glowing green from the light of the sonar screen. “We usually work in shipping lanes and harbors, but we can find anything that’s down there. Look at this,” he tapped his finger on the glass.

“Most everything in nature is gradual and curvy. If you see a straight line and sharp corners, it’s not supposed to be there.” A half dozen heads squeezed together to see a ghostly image with broken lines and corners pan across the screen. “That’s a piece of the plane.”

The ABC reporter filed his story from the bridge: “This is Dan Johnson reporting

The camera panned the deck to show the crew deploying the torpedo-shaped device. “If anything’s down there, they will find it and so far, they’ve found plenty, a debris field stretching more than a mile and maybe even longer before the night is through. It’s a grim, but necessary task and the ship is playing a critical role in this, a massive recovery effort and also, a criminal investigation, to find out what brought down this 747. Reporting from the bridge of the Rude at the crash site of TWA Flight 800, I’m Dan Johnson.” It was a public relations coup! Of all the assets at the crash site— Coast Guard, Navy, FBI, police—it was NOAA that got the coverage, and right from its own ship in the middle of the action.

“I was there for the bodies,” my friend, Big Daddy, told me. “We were out fishing and right around sunset, saw the whole thing. There was a streak of light like a missile heading up into the sky and then the explosion. There was no sound at first, and then it hit us square in the chest. By then the pieces were falling down in streaks of flames and smoke. We took off after it. It was about nine miles out and when we got there the ocean was on fire from the jet fuel. I was blinded by the smoke and had to find my way through the flames, but I got us into an area where everything was floating. The first body we saw was a woman who popped up right next to us. I was on the bridge and the guys were pretty reluctant to do anything

Lending credence to the explanation, they said, was the captain, recorded on the plane’s black box 10 minutes into the flight, voicing concerns over “a crazy fuel flow indicator on number four.”

He opened up the tuna door and pulled her right in. She was completely naked. It was pretty bad, but we had to do what we had to do.”

Big Daddy continued: “The next thing we know there’s a lot of shoes floating in the water. We pulled in a mail bag and a backpack with diapers in it. And then we pulled in a pair of shoes with feet in them.

That was pretty rough. We got as close to the flames as we could, but it was the fumes that got to us, burned our eyes and made it hard to breath. For a while, we didn’t find anything else and then suddenly, a couple of bodies popped up like they just broke away from the wreckage. The one thing I’ll never get out of my head was the look on their faces—sheer terror. One guy’s hands were up like he was clenching the seat in front of him; he had the most horrible look on his face. And everyone we pulled in, six altogether, were totally naked, clothes completely blown away. Pretty soon there were rescue boats everywhere pulling in what they could. It was cat-and mouse with the flames and more than once I had to throw her in reverse and back the hell out of there. There was a guy driving around with a body draped over his gunwales and that just wasn’t right. I yelled at him to get it the hell off of there for Christ’s sake. We could have pulled in more, but

the ones we had were starting to bleed out and it was a mess. We didn’t want to start stacking ’em on top of each other, so we headed for shore. They told us to go to the Coast Guard Station and what a sight that was. Bodies were lined up on the docks like cordwood. Boats unloading and heading back out. Once we pulled into the station, the authorities took over. They unloaded everything and decontaminated the boat.

Then they decontaminated us, sprayed us with bleach, but the problem was they didn’t have any water to rinse us off, so we stood there with the Clorox burning our privates.

We decided not to head back out. One thing I’m pretty sure of, the plane was blown from the sky. Terrorists, or maybe it was the Navy doing some kind of exercise in the area and now it’s one big cover up. All’s I know is we saw something streak through the sky

toward that plane and then we saw the explosion. It came down in burning pieces.

Nobody had a chance.”

Many along the coast that tragic evening said they saw a streak of light like a missile rise up into the sky and shoot down TWA Flight 800. Conspiracy theories abounded.

One was terrorists shot down the plane and another had the U.S. Navy, which was conducting exercises in the area, send it to its doom. The crash was investigated as a crime and the FBI, among all of the government assets involved in the recovery operation, became the lead agency. Daily briefings took on an urgency to get to the bottom of what caused the 747 to fall from the sky in flames.

The NOAA ship Rude crisscrossed miles of ocean and located almost every piece of

the downed aircraft and then dive teams spent almost a year in 120 feet of water to recover them. Huge salvage ships from the Navy, the Grapple and the Grasp, were on the scene and the wreckage was brought to an empty airplane hangar at the old Grumman plant in Calverton. Experts painstakingly put the Boeing plane back together piece by piece like a giant jig saw puzzle.

Eventually, the FBI determined that the crash was not due to terrorist activity and the National Transportation Safety Board took the lead in trying to figure out what went wrong. Four years after the catastrophe, the government agency announced its findings in a report that exonerated the Navy. The official explanation focused on the plane’s center fuel tank which was only partially filled since the flight from

This rising streak was what the witnesses reported as a missile, the NTSB contended.

Plus, an examination of the reconstructed plane in the Grumman hanger showed no impact from a projectile.

For my involvement in the crash response, I was awarded a Navy Commendation Medal along with my NOAA colleagues during a special ceremony at the East Moriches Coast Guard Station.

My dad had received the same medal during his service in World War II, a recognition much more deserving than mine.

It’s been 25 years since the crash and I know many of my friends and neighbors are still impacted from the tragedy as I am. The Flight 800 memorials at Smith Point Park and Kahler’s Pond serve as memorials and constant reminders of what we lost that day.

They all enjoyed the food and drinks at the Sunset Harbor Tiki Bar on the water in East Patchogue. Joe, a long time leader in the community, is very attentive to his constituents. He was first elected in 2018 and recently joined his colleagues in support of a bill which would prohibit state agencies from mandating masks for anyone under 18 years old.

COUNTY Newly-elected Suffolk County Legislator Jim Mazzarella is finishing his first month in office and is already working tirelessly to represent the residents of the 3rd District. After being sworn into office on June 8th, Legislator Mazzarella wasted no time in rolling up his sleeves to ensure the continuation of services in the 3rd Legislative District.

Legislator Mazzarella has already signed on as co-sponsor of 14 pieces of legislation and has packed his schedule with daily meetings with Community Leaders, Department Heads, Government Officials, and various members of his constituency.

He has done all this while also performing his duties to his legislative committees and as a Suffolk County Community College Budget Working Group member.

His legislative committees include: Education & Labor; Economic Development, Planning & Housing; and Public Safety.

“I am proud of all the work I have accomplished in my first month as a legislator,” stated Jim Mazzarella. “I want to ensure that I am doing everything within my power to be as effective as possible and deliver for the residents of the 3rd Legislative District.”

Additionally, Legislator Mazzarella met with Bellport Village Mayor Ray Fell to discuss how they can work together to benefit their mutual constituents. He also has meetings on the horizon with both PSE&G and the Suffolk County Water Authority to discuss utility services in Suffolk County, and he will be meeting with Caitlyn Michiels of Caitlyn’s Vision to learn about her advocacy work for children’s eye health.

Suffolk County Police Homicide Squad detectives are investigating the death of a man who was found shot in his home on the Poospatuck Reservation.

Seventh Precinct officers responded to a 911 call from the family of Josue Bedell requesting a wellness check at 10:05 a.m. July 4th saying they had been unable to get in contact with him

since July 3. Police entered the home, located at 114 Poospatuck Lane, and found Bedell, 47, dead with a gunshot wound.

Detectives are asking anyone with information on Bedell’s death to call the Homicide Squad at 631-852-6392 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-220-TIPS. All calls will be kept confidential.

Mazzarella Honors Chief Maria Landman as the 2021 Healthcare Hero for the 3rd Legislative District

In the spirit of honoring healthcare workers for their tireless work on the front line throughout the pandemic, as well as their numerous contributions to the communities in which they serve, this past March the Suffolk County Legislature approved Resolution 162-2021: Establishing an Annual Recognition of a Healthcare Hero From Each Legislative District. Legislator Jim Mazzarella used this opportunity to recognize Chief Maria Landman as the inaugural Healthcare Hero for the 3rd Legislative District for her many years of service to the Mastic Ambulance Company.

“Maria and heroes like her are perfect

examples of why this Legislation was approved,” stated Legislator Mazzarella.

“It is important that we take the time to thank and highlight Healthcare Heroes for their selfless work in service to their community not just during this past pandemic, but for all that they continue to do.”

Chief Maria Landman has been a member of the Mastic Ambulance Company for over 30 years and worked her way up through the ranks to become Chief. She is currently serving in her second term as Chief of the Ambulance Company. She has served in her current position as Chief for the past eight years, after serving numerous years as

a member of the Board of Directors.

During her current term as Chief, the Mastic Ambulance Company has averaged well over 3,200 emergency calls per year.

“The Covid-19 pandemic has not slowed down the need for Emergency First Responders and Maria has selflessly led her Ambulance Company throughout this pandemic,” Said Mazzarella. “Her tireless devotion to the Emergency Services, her Ambulance Company, all of the members, and the community that she serves is a testament to her status as a Healthcare Hero.”

Remembering TWA Flight 800

I had been elected to the Suffolk County Legislature in 1995 and I had only been in office for seven months. I was having dinner with friends at Okey Dokey’s Restaurant in Patchogue, when my pager went off advising me that a plane had crashed somewhere in Center Moriches. Since Center Moriches was part of my Legislative District, I decided to leave dinner and start heading back to my district. As I was traveling in the car, I started getting more pages and now phone calls. I then ran into Suffolk County Executive, Bob Gaffney.

He was also en route to the scene and suggested that I follow his car, which I did.

We headed to the incident command post, which was the Coast Guard Station in East Moriches. By the time we arrived at the Coast Guard Station, we were advised that the plane had actually crashed in the Atlantic Ocean. Soon, the small Coast Guard Station became the scene of the largest search and rescue operation most likely ever undertaken by the County of Suffolk. Every federal, state, county and town governmental agency one could think of set up camp at the Coast Guard Station.

Our EMS and Fire Volunteers and many recreational boaters were also involved in the search and rescue mission from the very beginning. Within hours, every media outlet known to man had also arrived at the site and started reporting what little information was available at the time.

For the next five to seven days, everyone basically lived at the Coast Guard Station. Many were directly involved in the rescue and then recovery mission. Many were there to cut through the governmental red tape. Many were there to try and determine what actually happened. Many were there to try to help and

Within a few minutes, we were at the site. It was pretty dark, but you could see fires burning on the water, numerous lights and dozens of small ships

Years later, the tragedy was blamed on design and operational problems of the 747 airliner. It took years to force corrections to be made, much of which still is being fixed today.

Saturday, marks the 25th Anniversary of the tragedy of TWA Flight 800. A memorial service was once again held to honor and pay tribute to the victims. A new call for help was made. While located on county property, maintenance is provided by the TWA Flight 800 Families Association at a substantial cost.

Floyd Alumnus Andrew Brust Ranks Tops in US Intercollegiate Lacrosse

Andrew Brust of Shirley, has earned the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association’s, (USILA), AllAmerican Honorable Mention accolades for the 2021 season. He was also named a two-time Skyline Conference Defensive Player of the Week in 2021. Brust, a 2018 graduate of William Floyd High School, just finished his junior year at St. Joseph’s College, (SJC). He appeared on the Skyline All-Conference FirstTeam and on May 10, was named Skyline Conference Defensive Player of the Year. According to USILA officials, Brust is the first player in the program’s history to earn AllAmerican honors of any kind.

Brust’s record with the St. Joseph’s College Golden Eagles is unparalleled. He started all eight games of an abbreviated season due to COVID, posting a 4-4 record, and finishing the season third in the nation in save percentage (.660), and fourth in goals against average (.637). As the Golden Eagles’ goalie, Brust has raised the bar for program bests at St. Joseph’s College. He extended his career save record to 289 saves and ranks second in career save percentage (,601) and goalsagainst average (8.54). His nine career wins are also the most in SJC history. St. Joseph’s College Head Coach, Tom Rotanz, attributes that level of success to dedication and commitment to the team. “Andrew is a very quiet person, except when he’s in the goal,” Rotanz said. “There, he leads by example - fully committed and 100% ‘Team First!’”

In a recent telephone interview, the star lacrosse goalie said his interest in lacrosse piqued as a 7th grader while he was playing goalie for William Floyd Middle School’s hockey team. Andrew’s older brother, Eric, began playing lacrosse in his high school sophomore year with the William Floyd Colonials.

After playing one year of JV lacrosse, Eric quickly became a varsity starter

and team star, according to William Floyd High School Lacrosse Coach, Desmond Megna. The camaraderie between the Brust Brothers is apparent as Andrew spoke fondly of his sibling. “Eric is my role model,” Andrew candidly said, adding, “he coached middle school and JV. My family has also been super supportive,” he added, “always rooting me on.” After moving up to the high school from middle school, Andrew started out the gate playing JV lacrosse as a Floyd freshman and sophomore, then advanced to the William Floyd Varsity Lacrosse team, playing through his senior year.

Coach Megna shared more of his insights into Brust: “Andrew’s always been a great athlete. He started (ninth grade) as an attackman,” the coach explained. “I needed a goalie, and I approached Andrew to play (defensive). We started training,” Megna continued, “and I instantly knew we made the right decision.

Andrew’s the best goalie we ever had at Floyd.” Calling Brust’s senior year an “incredible time” for the William Floyd Colonials, Megna said his star goalie led Suffolk County in saves and saves percentage. “We won games we shouldn’t have won, but we did win because we had Andrew,” Megna recounts. The Floyd lacrosse coach noted that Brust “held the team together” and set the Colonials up for the following year after he graduated. “Andrew’s been paying dividends - he’s trained two goalies, and he’s training another for next season, so he’s giving back,” Megna said. “When we needed Andrew to train new goalies, he was there in 20 minutes to coach! So basically now, he’s leading the country. Andrew’s senior year was so good,” Megna continued, “he had about 30 college coaches in all divisions interested in him, and he chose St. Joseph’s College because it was a decision that was best for him.”

Brust, who will be wrapping up his senior year at SJC in 2022, is majoring in Business with a minor in Accounting. His plans after graduation are to remain close to home, with intentions of continuing to coach at his high school alma mater. “I’m definitely thinking about coaching for William Floyd,” Brust said. “When the high school coach would ask me to help their goalies, I would be there for them.” Coach Megna couldn’t be happier, stating, “We definitely have an open-door policy for Andrew.”

William Floyd High School Hosts College Music Signing Day William Floyd High School recently hosted its fourth annual Senior Signing Day event for college bound student musicians. To be a collegiate musician, students must first be accepted to a college or university and then invited to audition which involves rigorous preparation and a presentation of between two and five musical pieces performed before a panel of music professors. This year, several William Floyd High School seniors have committed to performing in collegiate music ensembles, three will minor in music and nine will major in music in the areas of music performance, music education, music composition, music industry, music business and musical theater. Hometown Heroes Honored

More than a hundred local residents attended a Hometown Heroes event sponsored by the Rocky Point Sound Beach Chamber of Commerce for VFW Post 6249 to celebrate the Fourth of July and honor passed and present veterans from the community with pole banners hung along Broadway, King Road, Prince and 25a. Over 45 pictures of veterans were hung.

Those on the banners included heroes who had fought in WWI, WWII, Korea, Vietnam and the most recent wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. The chamber raised $4,150 from the community and donated it all to the VFW. Gary Pollakusky, President and Executive Director of the chamber and Joe Cognitore, VFW Post 6249 Commander led the crowd in thanking vets for their sacrifices. Included in the event was the singing of the national anthem by Tommy Sullivan and Carolyn Benson sang America The Beautiful followed by the traditional reading of the Declaration of Independence.

Medford Veterans Park Bandshell Construction is Underway and Due to Open this Summer Councilman Foley said, “Medford residents asked for a bandshell at Veterans Park and the Town took the steps to make it happen. I thank Legislator Calarco for his help to secure

BY KARL GROSSMAN The Long Island Power Authority (LIPA) and Public Service Enterprise Group (PSEG) quietly, behind closed doors and with the involvement of a top state energy official—the chief executive of the state’s Department of Public Service—agreed on a settlement last week allowing PSEG to continue to operate Long Island’s electric grid to 2025.

This happened despite a contingent of state lawmakers from Long Island signing a letter to Governor Andrew Cuomo calling on LIPA to “terminate its contract with PSEG LI as soon as possible and become a true public power company.” The 15 called on LIPA to operate the Long Island’s electric grid itself, not contract out the responsibility. They included State Senator Anthony H. Palumbo of New Suffolk and, from the Assembly, Fred W. Thiele, Jr of Sag Harbor; Steve Englebright of Setauket; Phil Ramos of Brentwood; Steve Stern of Dix Hills; and Kimberly Jean-Pierre of Wheatley Heights. “Across the country, publicly owned utilities have proven more affordable and reliable…are more responsive to customer needs,” they said.

It happened despite a $70 million “breach-of-contract” lawsuit LIPA brought against PSEG in December charging the Newark, New Jersey-based private company with “grossly negligent performance” in

Mr. Falcone said: “It’s time for a course correction.”

The new LIPA contract agreement with PSEG came about without transparency.

As Mark Harrington wrote in Newsday last week, it was “reached early Sunday morning.” And, he reported, “The settlement terms were reached by officials at the highest levels of Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo’s Department of Public Service, including DPS chief executive John Howard.”

The members are wives, mothers, and daughters of VFW veteran or military personnel that served in combat. They also have a Sons of VFW that are the male members of the VFW veteran or combat military personnel’s family. They too raise funds and are active in many different services to help the veterans and the communities.

BY TOM BARTON Jacob deGrom is having a great season. Ok, that’s not strong enough, how about Jacob deGrom is having an amazing season. Nope, still not enough.

Head turning, astonishing, stunning ... yes they all apply, but how about historic. Yes, historic is the only way to describe what we are all witnessing. deGrom has been the best pitcher in baseball for quite a few years now but he has completely outdone himself this season.

As deGrom ends his first half of the year with an under 1 ERA and as the clear best pitcher in the game, he also has the lead in the odds race to win the MVP. The hurler stands at a +115 to win the award leading the pack, and for some that is pretty good value. On the surface deGrom should be a much bigger favorite because if

the award was voted on today, there is no way he wouldn’t win, quite possibly unanimously.

So why shouldn’t everyone rush to the window to bet deGrom at plus money? Because he simply won’t win the award. This is no slight on deGrom but even during this historic run San Diego’s shirtstop Fernando Tatis is not far behind at +160 and Atlanta’s Rondal Acuna is sitting at under 4 to 1 odds.

The sportsbooks understand there are two halves of the season and the short odds represent that.

The best pitcher in the game, who is having a historic run, just simply can’t keep this pace. We have never, in the history of baseball, seen a pitcher keep this pace. We then have to begin the conversation of asking how much

BY CHUCK T. In an earlier column this baseball season, I discussed the concept of banking saves and stolen bases. I always love stocking away stats in the counting categories since they don’t come out of your cumulative totals even if you play poorly in the dog days of summer. But the revolving door of the closer position means that there are always closers coming into new jobs and it never hurts to have depth going into the trading deadline. The majority of ESPN leagues enforce some sort of trading deadline. Week #20-#22 tend to be the most common deadlines found, or dates in mid to late August. August 20th is the deadline for trades in my mixed league and closers are always hot items on other owners’ shopping lists.

So if you are chasing saves as a stat or looking to bolster your trading assets, here is a look at some possibilities to acquire which won’t cost much.

• Chicago Cubs – It doesn’t make sense for the Cubs to extend Craig Kimbrel past 2021 for the Cubs. They will probably be sellers. Ryan Tepera makes a lot of sense to consider as Kimbrel’s replacement, but moving Tepera to another team looking for bullpen help makes sense too. And don’t be surprised if Keegan Thompson

• Los Angeles Angels – Current closer Raisel Iglesias is a free agent at season’s end. It would be a strange signal to send to trade Iglesias at the trade deadline with Mike Trout coming back soon after the All Star break. The boost from a returning Mike Trout could convince the Angels to move once closer Steve Cishek instead, but should they move both Iglesias and Cishek put in for Mike Mayers. He could become a very good closer.

That wasn’t because he got blown up or had a bad outing, he just didn’t have historic outings. The best comparison I have come across for deGrom would be Dwight Gooden’s unbelievable 1.52 ERA in 1985. That leaves deGRom very little room for error if he wants to keep a “historic” pace.

• Much further down the road, and almost certainly past the 2021 season, I just don’t see Alex Reyes continuing as the closer for the St. Louis Cardinals.

Reyes has elite stuff and is a prime candidate to be moved into the starting rotation for the Cardinals. Major league teams realize that a capable starting pitcher is worth his weight in gold, and St. Louis knows that Giovanny Gallegod is one of the best late bullpen pitchers in the game. Be wary of any team in your baseball league looking to deal you Alex Reyes. He could still have tremendous value as a starting pitcher, so pay for him as if you were dealing for just that. A young starting pitcher candidate loaded with promise. And there are a lot of those guys around.

Don’t pay for him as a closer. He won’t be one soon.

As we (probably) all make New Year’s resolutions to go on a diet, we keep getting reminded that we are getting heavier as we get older. No matter where we turn, someone is telling us that we are getting fat and need to be thinner!

Guess what? So are our boats! Yes, as boats get older, they get heavier and that has a lot to do about being less “seakindly” and more “tender” as they get older (and our reflexes get slower – not a particularly good combination.) With fuel always subject to geopolitical roiling, here are some examples of how the boat is getting heavier – and more expensive to drive.

New Stuff…

We add things to our boat that weren’t there when we bought it. An ice chest may be added so we don’t have to lug one from the car. We add an additional ice chest so we can bring more ice so we can stay out longer and catch more fish (hopefully!) We pile up the cuddy cabin, a.k.a., the boat’s attic, with safety and fishing equipment so we don’t have to lug them from the car either.

And don’t forget that new 4-stroke engine you added – so much quieter, so much more fuel efficient and so much heavier per “horse of power” – at least

20% heavier would be my guesstimate, which makes a 400lb 200hp 2-stroke weigh in at nearly 500lbs as a 4-stroke state-of-the-art power plant. And the same hull sits in front of it.

Boats get “Wrinkles” too…

More insidiously, through tiny cracks in the gel coat, water seeps inside the hull and the boat gets 8 lbs heavier per gallon – and it seeps, generally, aft where the boat is naturally heavier per square foot of hull due to the engine. This making it harder to see over the bow when you gun the engine and start to “dig the hole” that getting up on plane gets you out of – and it is now harder to get on plane, i.e., you have to go faster, to get up on plane since the boat is heavier in the stern than when it was manufactured. An endless spiral.

Remedies

What to do about it? There are only 2 or 3 things that you can do. First, get rid of anything that isn’t essential. There are 10 weekends in a summer. You aren’t going to boat on every one of those 20 days – unless you are between spouses and looking for one that wants to live on the boat with you! How much of a big deal is it to cart just the things you need – not everything you own all the

With emotion-focused journaling, a few elements can go a long way toward the relief of letting go: • Examine – exploring your feelings,

needs, and experiences can help you to make sense of the stress you are feeling and help you to move beyond it.

• Acknowledge – sometimes we just have to give ourselves permission to feel a certain way, and then we can move on. Seeing the words in black and white can help you to realize when your feelings are valid.

• Explore - as you look at what is upsetting you and what felt wrong about the experience, it can also help to look at the benefits you may have gained from the situation. Finding the hidden benefits of our hardships is a way of maintaining some of our power in the situation.

SOLUTION-FOCUSED JOURNALING

• Techniques that involve exploring solutions for our stressors can be effective in facilitating the process of letting go of stressful feelings. This

We All Get Heavier as we Age – Even Our Boats! time - from the car or the dock locker that you installed at the foot of your slip?

Second, you may want to look into trim tabs – small “flaps” that are installed under your transom that will help you get up onto plane faster. What they save in fuel when “digging out of the hole” will quickly cover their costs. And don’t underestimate the safety factor that you’ll be able to see over the bow sooner. Third, you may need to change your prop! The engine may be plenty powerful enough to move your mini-warehouse but it can’t turn the propeller any faster due to its pitch (angle that it cuts through the water.) Counter-intuitively, the lower the prop pitch, the better your shot out of the hole. However, this comes at a price: top speed. The lower pitch makes the engine reach maximum rpm at slower speeds. Conversely, a higher pitch will deliver greater top speeds, but slower acceleration. I recently went from a 3-blade prop to a 4-blade prop – same trade-off, up on plane sooner and more easily but lost about 10% of the wideopen-throttle (WOT) speed. For me, it was well worth it as I need to get out of the hole 100% of the time that I apply thrust but rarely need to operate at WOT.

• Brainstorm solutions - rather than stopping at the feelings-exploration stage, actively searching for solutions can move you from a stuck, stressed place to a point of feeling that you have options.

GRATITUDE JOURNALING

• Gratitude journaling can have a positive impact on emotional wellbeing to such an extent that it can lift depression. The following method of gratitude journaling is one that researchers prefer:

• At the end of each day, choose three things that you are grateful for.

• Write about each one in detail, focusing on what you appreciate the most.

• Be sure they are things that happened that day and that you write about them at the end of that day. For some reason, this formula seems to provide the greatest benefit.

Gifting

Q: A:

What can I do if my elderly mother gifted a large amount of assets right before her death?

A common issue that arises during the administration of an estate concerns assets that were transferred close to death. These transfers can be in the form of gifts or the creation of a joint tenancy or a beneficiary designation.

For example, your mother may have transferred cash in her bank account to one of your siblings or added a sibling name to her bank account as a joint owner. Likewise, she could have changed a beneficiary designation on her insurance policy or retirement account.

All these transfers appear on the surface to be improper especially when the transfer occurs right before death, as such transfers change her long-standing estate plan. Moreover, the decedent could have been suffering from a condition which impaired her judgment.

If you are the Executor or Administrator of her estate and you are made aware of these transfers or changes, you must investigate to determine whether it is worthwhile to seek recovery of these assets on behalf of the estate.

The rationale for the investigation is that the pre-death transfer resulted in the assets passing outside of the probate or administration estate and therefore the estate beneficiaries are deprived of the asset.

The inquiry proceeding may not be required if the fiduciary has proof of the location of property. In that case, the fiduciary can start with the SCPA 2103 turnover proceeding and skip the inquiry. In this proceeding, the fiduciary and the respondent would gather and present evidence to have the court determine if the estate owns the property and whether it should be turned over, or if the estate has no claim to the property, leaving it with the respondent.

If the Executor/Administrator decides that it is worthwhile to attempt to recover these assets, there are two proceedings within the Surrogate’s Court Procedure Act (SCPA) Section 2103 that are relevant. The first part of the proceeding is an inquiry. This proceeding brings the respondent (someone who is believed to have property that belongs to the estate) in front of the court for questioning in a deposition. The purpose of this inquiry is

It is advisable to retain a skilled New York estate attorney who understands all the requirements of this proceeding if you are the fiduciary confronted with this issue of assets transferred shortly before death.

BY DOMINICK FORTE The Archangels Michael and Gabriel are the only two of the heavenly hosts recognized for their angelic interventions and achievements in both the Bible and the Koran. Historical events reference Gabriel in the recorded pages of Holy Scripture numerous times. The numerous interventions which Gabriel undertook were manifestations of God’s boundless love for us. Gabriel was the most utilized of all His messengers. He has had a continuous impact on the history of the human race.

Gabriel’s earliest recipients of God’s benevolent Providence. He appeared to Daniel several times encouraging the boy prophet with God’s approval. He inspired him with the knowledge that with heaven on his side he could not fail. The message delivered was timeless. The kingdoms of the temporal world are fragile and subject to corruption compared to God’s kingdom. Earthly domains will come and go but God will be there to bring evil to a crashing defeat.

Of course, he is most noted for announcing to Mary that she would give birth to Jesus. He is therefore the herald of the salvation of humankind and revered in many religions, across many cultures. He is the most written about angel in all of literature. The name Gabriel comes from the Hebrew and means “the strength of God.”

Oral tradition credits him as the muse for Moses and being the prophet’s inspiration for the entire Pentateuch. Jewish Rabbinical literature points to him as the teacher of the 70 languages that Joseph needed to master in order to rule Egypt. Muslims believe he dictated the Koran to Mohammed and that he accompanied him in his ascension to heaven.
