As the COVID pandemic upended life across the nation, one group stood tall in the face of the crisis and came to the aid of their fellow citizens.

Recognizing the heroics of these selfless individuals, the Rocky Point Sound Beach Chamber of Commerce, along with Suffolk County businesses, organizations and residents, hosted a celebration Saturday that culminated in a 50-car caravan of supporters making their way through the business district past 100 poles festooned with banners of gratitude.

“The community turned out in a big way to thank the essential workers who got us through the pandemic,” said community leader and Chamber President Gary Pollakusky. “We could not have lived without them.” at

COUNTY A letter from Suffolk employees on behalf of failed legislative candidate Kate Browning using the return address of the county Democrat Party has raised eyebrows as recipients are wondering how the group got its hands on the private information of past and present county employees.

Addressed to “Brothers and Sisters,” the employees said the former legislator “will be a strong fighter for Suffolk County workers” and appealed to the recipients to vote for her in the May 25 special election.

One addressee, Brookhaven resident Greg Miglino, said he was surprised that he was on the mailing list since he last worked for the county in 2002. “It would be highly inappropriate if they got this list through Suffolk County since my personal information is privileged and should be protected,” Miglino said, noting that the list

The former legislator, whose campaign was overshadowed by her attempt to return to county government after being prohibited

by Suffolk’s term limit law, was soundly defeated by community activist Jim Mazzarella. Presenting herself as a friend of the working class, Browning, a former bus driver, was rebuffed by her former union which endorsed Mazzarella.

She is expected to run against the incumbent legislator in November.

“This goes to show you just how far Kate Browning and her handlers will go to get another Democrat on the Suffolk Legislature,” said Jesse Garcia, chairman of the county GOP. “They obviously obtained the mailing list by inappropriate means and we need to make sure they don’t again impinge on the

privacy of both past and present county employees in the November election.”

Miglino pointed out that when he worked for the county, he served as a White Collar employee and was not a member of the AME, the county’s largest employee union.

“They got their hands on this mailing list in an improper way and it is incumbent on Browning and the Democrats to make sure it is never used again for political purposes,” Miglino said, noting that the letter stated it was “Paid for

by Vote Kate Browning.”

“When you talk about free and fair elections, this definitely crosses the line,” said a former county employee who knows of at least a half dozen people who received the letter. “These people have been out of government for years, yet somehow ended up getting a letter addressed to them as ‘Brother and Sister,’” the former worker said.

New Changes to New York Power of Attorney Powers of Attorney are an effective and frequently used tool in many areas of the law, particularly with elder and estate planning. By executing a power of attorney, the principal authorizes another individual, the agent, to act on his or her behalf. The authority granted in a Power of Attorney can be broad, permitting the agent to conduct any sort of business on behalf of the principal, or it may be specific, limiting the authority to certain activities or transactions. A new Power of Attorney law goes into effect next week cleaning up some of the problems associated with the previous document.

On December 15, 2020, changes were made to the provisions of New York State Law updating Powers of Attorney for financial and estate planning. The changes to the law and the forms were made to clarify and simplify the Power of Attorney Law that was previously amended in 2010.

Suffolk County Police arrested Jesse Diaz for raping a woman on a trail in in Coram near Route 112 and Skips Road on May 27 at approximately 1:45 p.m.

Investigators say she was assaulted and raped by a man, who was described as having a dark complexion with a medium build and was unshaven.

The woman was transported to Stony Brook University Hospital Medical Center for treatment.

Diaz was arrested in front of 800

Montauk Highway in Shirley at approximately 6:40 p.m.

Sixth Squad detectives charged Diaz, 29, of 124 Mastic Blvd. West in Shirley, with Rape 1st Degree and Strangulation 2nd Degree. He will be held overnight at the Sixth Precinct and is scheduled to be arraigned at First District Court in Central Islip on June 3.

A criminal charge is an accusation. A defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.

Nitrate Levels are High Dear Editor, On Sunday, April 11, Pattersquash Creek Civic Association members joined Save the Great South Bay’s and Wm. Floyd HS Science Teacher Luisa McHugh and her students to take water samples of Pattersquash Creek at Bayview Park’s kayak launch ramp. Elevated nitrate levels were found which clearly makes the case for the need for sewers asap.

The following is an excerpt from the report of collected data: Nitrate level: 10mg/liter. This was about double the amount of nitrate measured in the two other creeks data that was collected from by the Save the Great South Bay this spring.

The nitrate level is the number that interests us all, of course. Excess nitrogen is the big factor that triggers our many algae bloom events such as brown tides, blue green algae blooms, mahogany tides etc. 10mg/liter is a rather high number by my understanding, but not off the charts. Nitrate levels can vary depending on many factors, such as rain events that push septic nitrogen into the creek, and seasonal fertilizer application, and there is also atmospheric deposition as well. Sadly, Long Island has about 400k septics, and is quite liberal in its use of lawn chemicals: Those realities need to be addressed..

As I understand it, if ground water levels of nitrogen rise above 9, that is a concern for the groundwater - It would trigger a shutdown of a drinking water well. The marine environment, our bays, is more sensitive than groundwater and as we all have witnessed, it does not respond well to nitrogen inputs. We already have a mahogany tide in the Great South Bay. Actions by then County Legislator Kate Browning supported the County Sewer District plant to be placed at the airport. Most of Mastic Beach is in Phase 4 & 5 when post Sandy funds allotted for Mastic Beach and Smith Point should have benefited our community most directly.

Bills to Combat Crime Introduced in Albany

Albany, NY—Local state legislators have announced their support of a “Restore Order” package of bills to combat the crime wave that is sweeping across New York State. The plan is designed to reverse the flawed criminal justice “reforms” approved in 2019 after the Democrats took control of both houses of the legislature.

“Every Democrat official in New York told us their ‘reforms’ were going to make communities safer,” noted Assemblyman Joe DeStefano. “Within three months of enactment, however, it became clear that their policies enable unchecked criminal behavior while simultaneously undermining law enforcement.”

“We are making public safety a top priority in Albany,” said Assemblywoman Jodi Giglio in announcing her support of

the plan to strengthen the state’s criminal justice system. “As a crime wave sweeps across our state, it’s time to get back to law and order. These are all common sense measures that should be the foundation of our criminal justice system. We can’t sit idly by while the safety of our residents is under such a constant threat.”

According to the local legislators, the “Restore Order” package will: • Return judicial discretion by giving judges back the ability to determine whether a violent criminal poses a dangerous threat to the community and can be held without bail.

• Remove all gun crimes from the no-bail list of offenses Democrats established in 2019.

• Reform parole by requiring a unanimous vote of at least three parole commissioners to grant a prisoner early release. The bill

also allows a majority vote of the Legislature to remove a commissioner from the Parole Board.

• Authorize a “Three Strikes & You’re In” for life in prison without parole for persistent violent felony offenders.

• Target Shooting Into Crowds by making the crime a Class B violent felony.

• Provide for an additional five-year term of imprisonment for committing a felony while possessing a loaded firearm.

• Make “hate crime” a qualified offense for purposes of bail issuance and denying pretrial.

• Enact Paula’s Law to prevent the parole of anyone who sexually assaults and murders a child under 18 years of age.

“Families across the state are being torn apart by violent and dangerous criminals,” said Madeline Brame, Chairwoman of the New York State Victims’ Rights Reform Council. “My son, Sgt. Hason Correa,

a U.S. Army veteran who served in the Afghanistan War, was murdered by repeat violent felony offenders. These dangerous individuals had proven to be a menace to society, but because of New York’s criminal justice system, which is riddled with flaws, a known murderer is currently walking free amongst us, free to kill again. Now as violent crime spikes in communities across the state, legislative leaders in Albany must act to keep the most dangerous criminals in jail and reform the state’s bail system.”

Crime has reached historically-high levels in cities throughout New York State including: New York City – Murders have risen nearly 17 percent; shooting incidents are up 83 percent; and the number of shooting victims is up 78 percent.

Albany – From January 1 to May 30, 2021, there have been 9 shooting fatalities, a

125 percent increase over the same period last year; rapes have increased 15 percent; aggravated assault is up 19 percent; and robberies have risen 16 percent.

Syracuse – Homicides are up 50 percent.

Rochester – Homicides are up 100 percent; and the number of shooting victims has increased by 68 percent.

Buffalo – Murders are up 38 percent; and the number of shooting victims has risen by 88 percent.

“We must keep our cities—and the suburbs—safe,” Assemblyman DeStefano concluded. “I intend on working with my Long Island colleagues, law-enforcement and victim advocates across the state to advance this package through the legislature. We cannot let this crime wave continue.”

COVID-Related Rental Assistance Available to Tenants and Landlords

Tenants and landlords who suffered financial losses due to COVID-19 may be eligible for relief made possible through federal funding. The United States Department of the Treasury, under the Emergency Rental Assistance Program, (ERAP), has issued funding to all 50 states for legislators to funnel grants to local jurisdictions to distribute to renters and landlords who meet eligibility guidelines.

The application process rolled out June 1, 2021 and sunsets December 31, 2022. The ERAP is designed to provide significant economic relief to help low and moderateincome households who are at risk of experiencing housing instability by providing temporary rental assistance.

New York State Senator Anthony Palumbo, (R-1st District), explained that Congress has allocated more than $45 billion in rental assistance which it has doled out to the states. New York’s share of the federal allocation is $2.3 billion, with another $100 million in CARES Act state funding. But distributing the money to the landlords on behalf of tenants who

Palumbo, who does not support the extension of the moratorium prohibiting evictions from May through August 31, said he “supports rent relief for tenants and also for landlords, because they have to keep the buildings afloat.” With 200,000 cases in New York City and a flood of another million new cases filed in September when the moratorium is lifted, “the system can’t handle that, so there has to be some balance.”

Qualifying formulas determine who will be eligible to receive assistance, and then, applications are reviewed on firstcome, first-served bases. Alison Karppi, Commissioner of Housing and Community Development, (HCD), for the Town of Brookhaven, said qualifying measures for tenants and landlords to be eligible for the relief funding are set in accordance with area median incomes. “You have to be at or below 80% of the area median income

Palumbo re-emphasized funding has to be made available as soon as possible to those landlords and tenants who qualify, but cautioned that applications must be legitimate and factual. Measures are in place, too, to detect fraud and scam applications. “This legislation is to ensure that people are being given a hand up not a hand out,” Palumbo said. Karppi concurred: “We have to make sure there is no duplication of benefits.” to qualify,” Karppi explained, “and,” she added, “the United States Department of the Treasury is encouraging local jurisdictions to target those tenants who are at 50% or below their area median incomes.”

For the first 30 days, priority will be given to households at or below 50 percent of the area median income, including if a member of the household is a veteran; is unemployed for at least 90 days; is currently experiencing domestic violence; has an eviction case related to their current case pending in court; resides in a mobile home; or lives in a community which was disproportionately impacted by COVID-19.

The same guidelines apply to those with incomes at or below 80 percent of the area median income. After the first 30 days, applications will be processed on a firstcome, first-served basis while funds are available. Households whose applications are approved for the Emergency Rental Assistance Program will receive up to 12 months of rental arrears with an additional three months of additional rental assistance if the household is expected to expend at least 30 percent of its gross monthly income to pay for rent.

Incomes are based on current income or Calendar Year 2020 income that is below the area median income. Karppi said those jurisdictions, (counties or

townships), who want to participate must have a minimum population of 200,000.

Participating jurisdictions on Long Island include Suffolk and Nassau counties, and the townships of Brookhaven, Oyster Bay, Babylon, Huntington, Islip, Hempstead and North Hempstead. “If you meet eligibility requirements, we will help you fill out the application,” Karppi said.

But while the United States Treasury wants jurisdictions to be capped at median income levels, HUD (Housing Urban Development) has determined to raise the cap for Suffolk and Nassau counties due to the high cost of living on Long Island.

“There is a dispute about that, but we’re using HUD guidelines,” Brookhaven Town Supervisor Edward Romaine said.

Romaine underscored the need for Emergency Rental Assistance grants to exist. “There are a lot of people who are renting where COVID has affected their ability to pay rent due to a loss of jobs or revenue, and because Governor Cuomo had forbidden landlords to evict tenants, both the tenants and landlords are hurting,” Romaine said. “The Town of Brookhaven does not have the staff to run the program, so the town’s role is to get the word out to tenants and landlords who qualify.”

During a Teachers College Writer’s Workshop unit on position papers, the students focused on the question whether schools should continue to offer virtual learning next school year or resume in-person classes.

To formulate a cohesive opinion on this relevant topic, the students researched and gathered information from texts and videos and wrote their formed opinions in a position paper. Upon completion of their position papers, they utilized the information to write a letter to New York State Governor Andrew Cuomo, voicing their views on the topic.

In writing the position paper and letter, the students had to consider the audience, language and textbased evidence and develop a persuasive tone to represent their position as well as demonstrate their experience and expertise on the topic. In-person learners mailed their printed letters to the state capitol and remote learners completed an online form to electronically send their letters to the governor.

“The purpose of this project was for students to see the value in their positions and to respect the opinions of others,” explained teacher Brianne Torre. “It also encouraged activism and the reinforcement of their voices.”

Memorial Day Service

While they were unable to have their usual Memorial Day parade, the Arthur H. Clune American Legion post 1533 and the Mastic Beach Fire Department paid honor to our Heroes that sacrificed their lives for our freedom. They did a Flag ceremony at the William Floyd Estate, the Light House on Neighborhood Rd., the Ambulance Station, The Fire House, the local Cemetery and the

Legion’s post. They thanked the Heroes and their families, gave a short prayer, placed a flower wreathe by the flag poles and raised and lowered the American Flag while taps were played. We must remember that our freedom was not free, but that those Heroes paid for it.

Alleged bias in hiring in a Suffolk County school district could lead to a statewide law prohibiting discriminatory practices “in relation to the qualifications of professionals in education.”

Assemblyman Fred W. Thiele, Jr. of Sag Harbor is a co-sponsor. The legislation has been introduced in the State Assembly by Michaelle Solages of Elmont, chair of the New York State Black, Puerto Rican, Hispanic and Asian Caucus. She is also the deputy Assembly Democratic leader.

The bill cites a 2019 state Department of Education study, titled “Education Diversity Report,” that states that “New York’s student population of students of color is 50 percent. The racial and ethnic composition of the teacher workforce does not reflect the diversity of the student population.”

It goes on: “Access to a racially and culturally diverse teacher workforce is beneficial for all students, particularly for students of color, who often thrive in classrooms led by teachers who share their racial and cultural backgrounds. This bill would encourage educational institutions to signal and embrace the importance of teacher and school leader diversity as well as change the recruitment practices to identify qualified applications.”

Mr. Thiele commented: “I think that everyone can point to a teacher in their lives as they went through school— whether grade school or high school— who made a difference as a role model or mentor.” But he said, in many schools in the state, commonly “nobody on the faculty looks like the students they are teaching. The bill is designed to make hiring patterns more transparent and provide greater diversity. I think it is of critical importance.”

The measure grows out of an investigation by the Islip Town branch of the NAACP which “has identified racially discriminatory policies and practices that are used by the Brentwood Union Free School District to increase the employability of whites and reduce the employability of Blacks.”

The branch president, William King Moss III, said that “the Brentwood School District often times does not interview any Black applicants for a given teaching position even though the Black applicant is more qualified than white counterparts.”

There are 18,500 students in the district, nine percent of whom are Black, while of its 1,300 teachers, 2.5 percent are African-American.

Bill Prohibiting Discrimination in Hiring of Educators The district has an 80 percent Latino student population and 20 percent of teachers are Latino but this, said Mr. Moss, is largely due to a New York regulation that holds that “Englishlanguage learners” require specialized instruction. So, there is hiring of Spanishspeaking teachers because the district “does not have a choice even though it has an apparent white-first agenda.”

Mr. Moss was the 1995 salutatorian at Brentwood High School. He went on to Harvard where he received a bachelor’s degree in mathematics and a master’s in mathematics education. A Brentwood resident, he taught mathematics for 11 years in Brentwood and was involved in developing the “fair hiring policy” for the district which, he says, it “fought tooth and nail” and now “often ignores.” For the past 11 years he has been director of academic affairs in the Lawrence School District.

The Brentwood School District denies bias in hiring with its attorney having declared: “Brentwood has been a leader in increasing the diversity of its teaching and administrative staff.”

They opened the year at +600 or better to even make the postseason and they didn’t just back in, they kicked the door down with authority. Julius Randle had MVP buzz and the garden was rocking as it hosted its first playoff game in 8 seasons. From a betting standpoint the Knicks ended the year as the most profitable team in the league and all seemed bright in orange and blue.

Then walked in Trae Young.

Young shot the Hawks into the next round and shot holes in the Knicks fans hopes and dreams. When he bowed at MSG it was a dagger in the hearts of fans but highlighted a

more pressing concern ... New York needs a star. This is not a dig at Randle, he is a very capable #2, but even in an MVP season few would say he is even a top 15 player in the league, certainly not top 10.

In the NBA nowadays it’s awfully tough to lure stars and draft superstars when you’re a middle of the pack team, yes even if you are in New York. Before he went to Miami all the buzz was that LeBron would choose the Big Apple. He chose to take his talents elsewhere.

When Durant’s name came up (the first time), the Empire State seemed like the destination. Nope, he went westward. The same can be said for AD, Giannis and others. All seemed to be lost.

It was a bit of a shock to the system when Mike Trout turned up with another multi-month injury to his legs again this year. Fantasy baseball players in season long formats saw their chances of a championship dashed when it became clear that 6-8 weeks missing Mike Trout would just about cripple their dreams of fantasy baseball glory. The famous line that there are 4 stages to overcoming a tragedy, SHOCK, DENIAL, ANGER, ACCEPTANCE have always stuck with me. But please, let me help get you closer to the acceptance. I try to spend as little time with the first three.

I got into an interesting debate with Tom Barton, in our Wanna Bet! Pre-season radio broadcast. In a nutshell, Tom thought that Mike Trout was still hands down the #1 player to be picked in fantasy baseball leagues. I disagreed with Tom based purely on the fact that Mike Trout was no longer stealing bases. It also didn’t sit well with me that I also thought Mookie Betts had eclipsed Trout in the 2018 season alone.

We walked away from the Season Preview deeply divided, but I would refer to that as the ANGER step. Let’s fast forward to ACCEPTANCE. Mike Trout visited the DL injury list for the first time in his career in May of 2017 due to torn ligaments in his thumb sliding

head first into second base. He ended up only playing in 114 games that season. Trout missed 21 games played in the 2018 season due to a variety of small ailments but all in all turned in a serviceable 140 games played of his standard excellence. However, in 2019 Trout needed season ending surgery to deal with a Morton’s neuroma conditions that required surgery. It marked the third consecutive season at the time that Trout missed substantial time. Trout ending up only logging time in 134 games played in 2019.

After playing nearly all of the COVID shortened 2020 season, disaster has struck Mike Trout yet again. This time Trout has suffered a calf strain that will see him miss 6-8 weeks of the 2021 baseball season. 2017 was ruined due to torn thumb ligaments.

2018 was mostly wrist inflammation. 2019 was season ending foot surgery. And now in 2021 while jogging on the basepaths in late May, Trout strained the calf muscles of his leg. The cumulative damage is there. When Trout returns in either 6 or 8 weeks, he will have missed ¼ of his games with the Los Angeles Angels.

In major league history, there are 13 baseball players who have hit more home runs than Mike Trout through their 29th birthday. They are as follows:

This is the window folks. New York will have to give up a king’s ransom for Lillard, but if you want to be royalty that’s a price they have to pay. Bring Lillard to the bug stage and do it now, before anyone else bows on your big night.

Now you may be asking, so what Chuck, we look to you for advice on what to do with Trout going forward. And you are right, we are at ACCEPTANCE. If you play in a season long mixed league, I think the reality there is that the highest you can consider drafting Mike Trout for 2022 and beyond is 9th overall. In an AL only league I could argue he should go around 5th overall. If you play in an existing dynasty league I think the time is right now to consider trading Mike Trout. WHAT? Did you seriously just type that, Chuck T.? Well, yeah I did, and here is the reality.

Mike Trout stole 50 bases (49 actually) as a rookie in 2012. Since 2017 he has stolen 22-24-11-1-2 bases. When he comes back from this calf strain you are looking at a guy who will not be given a green light by his manager UNDER STRICT GUIDANCE by Angels management. There is just no way

Mike Trout can still do special things on the field though. He has a lifetime on base percentage of .419 and there is really nobody else in baseball who does that so well. But a guy who misses ¼ of his team’s games and no longer runs is a burden that most teams can’t burden. A competitive league I play in just saw Trout traded for a package of Xander Boegarts, Alex Reyes, Nick Pivetta and a 2022 #1 draft pick. I am wondering if the guy paid too much.

In June 1775, the Second Continental Congress met to create the Continental Army. This led to the creation of what was the first “American Flag,” the Continental colors. That flag was comprised of 13 red and white alternating stripes and a Union jack in the corner. George Washington realized that this flag was too similar to the British and therefore was not a great confidence builder for the revolutionary efforts, so he turned his efforts on creating a new flag. On June 14, 1777, less than a year after Betsy Ross (who assisted in the war by repairing uniforms and sewing tent) had received the order from General George Washington to make the first flag, the Second Continental Congress passed a resolution stating: “Resolved, that flag of the United States be thirteen stripes,

The Children's Department will be giving out Summer With Us journals to children entering K-7th grade. These journals can be used to keep track of all of the fun they have this summer. Children can scribble, start a diary, list the books they read, draw a picture inspired by something they read or just collect stickers or keep track of the library programs they attend.

We have a journal making station in the Children's Department with all kinds of fun art supplies, stickers and craft material, where kids can decorate and add to their journals.

Every time a child shows us something from their journal throughout the summer, they can enter our Summer With Us raffle for a chance to win exciting prizes.

In drawing on my associates in the pastoral community, together with past research, unconditional love can only be experienced when we are giving it away and feeling joined in oneness with others. The following statements summarize what unconditional love is all about: • It is giving our love totally to everyone, excluding no one.

• It is loving and giving without expectations, or wanting to get love or anything else in return.

• It is total acceptance of another person with no desire to change that person in any way.

• It is seeing only the light of love in everyone.

HOW IS UNCONDITIONAL LOVE ACCOMPLISHED?

• By letting go of all our guilt and not

projecting guilt onto others.

• By forgiving and letting go of the past, in the present and living in the joy of now.

• By not making demands on anyone.

• By resisting temptation to judge.

• By giving all our needs, wants, desires, and feelings of scarcity to our inner teacher, and letting the voice of love transform them into fullness and wholeness.

• By making each moment an opportunity for offering forgiveness to someone in our lives; and for seeing everyone as our teacher – thus giving ourselves the opportunity to practice and learn the benefits of forgiveness.
