By digitally scanning and retaining land records, digital surrogates are utilized in place of the actual hard copies to preserve land transactions while also providing for an efficient and effective safeguard of the land records of Suffolk County. “Although traditional paper mediums are increasingly susceptible to disaster, we utilize state-of-the-art computer storage systems to hold digital images of these paper mediums to provide an added layer of security in the protection of the public record,” concluded Pascale.

WILLIAM FLOYD HIGH SCHOOL Congratulations to the William Floyd Class of 2021! By Barbara Lamonica
The members of the senior class of William Floyd High School graduated with all the pomp and circumstance of a proper commencement. Donned in white and green caps and gowns, the students made their final trip as a group from the high school onto the field, where they celebrated with their families, friends and school officials. Following the processional and presentation of colors by N.J.R.O.T.C., Student Government President, Joseph Mazzarella, led in the Pledge of Allegiance, followed by the William Floyd High School Chorus' majestic rendition of the Star Spangled Banner. Following Floyd Academy Principal John DeBenedetto and William Floyd High School Principal Philip Scotto delivering welcome addresses, Board of Education President Robert Vecchio acknowledged those seniors who have enlisted in various esteemed branches of the United States Military. Dorian DeLeon delivered his Salutatory Address to colleagues, after which Superintendent of Schools Kevin M. Coster offered words of wisdom to the graduates before awarding diplomas. Valedictorian Christian Reilly offered the traditional speech and tassel ceremony, bringing Graduation 2021 to a successful close.

Salutatorian
Valedictorian Christian Reilly, who is graduating with a 103.22 weighted grade point average, will be attending Stony Brook University in the fall to major in biology. He plans to pursue a career in the medical field. During his time at William Floyd, Christian was a member of the National Honor Society, the Science Honor Society, the Foreign Language Honor Society and the Medical Club. He attended William Floyd schools K-12 including Nathaniel Woodhull Elementary School, William Floyd Middle School and William Floyd High School.
Salutatorian Dorian DeLeon will also be attending Stony Brook University in the fall to major in nursing. Throughout his time at William Floyd High School, Dorian focused on his academics (102.3 weighted grade point average) and being a student athlete as a member of the boys varsity tennis team. Dorian also spent his entire K-12 career in William Floyd schools – attending William Floyd Elementary School, William Floyd Middle School and William Floyd High School.
Both young men were also recently honored by the local members of the New York State Senate and Assembly delegation in a valedictorian & salutatorian Zoom call with NYS Anthony Senator Palumbo and New York State Assemblymen Fred Thiele and Joe DeStefano, and other Long Island state representatives.

Anthony demonstrates passion, focus and dedication in all of his endeavors. He has been exceptionally successful in all of his academic and musical pursuits. Anthony is ranked number 1 in his class, making him the Bellport High School Class of 2021 Valedictorian. He has achieved over a 103 GPA and has rightfully earned a place in the Math Honor Society, the Science Honor Society, Tri-M Music Honor Society and the National Honor Society. Anthony is an exceptional musician who performs as section leader in the Jazz Ensemble, Wind Ensemble, and Pit Orchestra. Anthony’s extraordinary talent has earned him selection in the Suffolk All County Band and the NYS Band Directors Association All State Band. In addition, Anthony dedicates time as a math tutor to younger students and volunteering at the Lighthouse Mission. Anthony will undoubtedly be successful as he goes on to college where he will study to pursue a career in the STEM field.
Victoria is the Salutatorian of Bellport Senior High School’s Class of 2021. Victoria is an articulate, analytical, inquisitive, and focused young woman. She is proud of succeeding in eight AP courses and all of the honors courses offered at Bellport High School. In addition, Victoria has been recognized for her academic accomplishments by being inducted into the Math, Science, Tri-M Music, and National Honor Societies. She is the President of the Future Teachers of America club, working to support students for potential careers in the teaching profession. Victoria is truly passionate about music and is the first chair cellist in our Chamber Orchestra and has performed annually at NYS Solo Music Festival since the 7th grade. Victoria has gained valuable experience attending school sporting events, interviewing student-athletes, and recognizing their accomplishments by writing for our school newspaper. As an avid Chicago Cubs baseball fan, Victoria has officially committed to attending North Central College in Naperville, Illinois in the fall. She plans to major in sports management with the goal of working in sports marketing or athletic event planning.

Throughout his high school career, Justin was a member of the junior varsity and varsity football teams, captain of the baseball team, participated in the Science Olympiad, Model United Nations, SPARK Protein Crystallography Collaboration, St. Sylvester’s Youth Group and volunteered at the Gurwin Jewish Nursing & Rehabilitation Center. Justin is a Great American Rivalry Series scholar athlete an AP Scholar. Moutouka will be attending Brown University in the fall and plans on studying biochemistry and molecular biology.

A member of three Honor Societies this young lady enjoys and is dedicated to an impressive list of extracurricular activities including varsity winter and spring track, varsity cross country, as well as involvement with the Varsity Leaders Club. One of her favorite activities has been leading our orchestra, being the Concert Master for many concerts as well as being the treasurer for the Chamber Orchestra. On the community front, she has been involved with our ESM track camp as a counselor, and she has also been a math tutor for many years helping younger students understand the fundamentals of math. Totally immersed in the STEM world she is currently the only female within the AP Physics C course this senior year. Majoring in engineering at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute this coming September.

Finishing at the top of her class, Emily Arbuiso will pursue a degree in History with a minor in Environmental Science on a Pre-Law track at Harvard University. Emily is an AP Scholar with Distinction, a ScholarAthlete, achieved High Honor Roll throughout high school, and received the A+ Award. She is the current president (and former secretary) of the Student Council and a member of the National Honor Society, Student Government, Best Buddies, Environmental Club, and Longwood Travels. In addition, Emily is a member of the varsity winter and spring track and cross country teams. Outside of school, she participates in the Brookhaven Youth Court, the Longwood Public Library Advanced Division Battle of the Books, Students for Climate Action. She is currently employed by the Longwood Library as well.
Gavin Stumpf will be attending the Honors College at the University of Alabama this fall. He is a National Merit Scholar, an AP Scholar with Distinction, a National AP Scholar, received A+ Awards, and has achieved High Honor Roll throughout high school. In addition to his academic achievements, Gavin is the current president of the National Honor Society and vice president of the Varsity Quiz Bowl. He is a member of the Math Club and the cross country team. In addition, he is a current member of the Rotary Interact Club and the SPARK program at Brookhaven National Laboratory. Gavin tutors students and participates in the Longwood Public Library Advanced Division Battle of the Books in the community.

Jacqueline Glaser is the Valedictorian of the Westhampton Beach High School Class of 2021. Jackie has satisfied the requirements for the AP Capstone Diploma and the Advanced Regents Diploma by taking 13 AP classes and earning an unweighted 99.7 grade point average. Jackie is an AP Scholar and serves as the Vice President of the National Honor Society. Independently, Jackie has studied German and French.
Jade Hawkesworth is headed for Massachusetts Institute of Technology. As the Salutatorian of the Westhampton Beach High School Class of 2021, Jade has arduously worked throughout high school by taking the most rigorous course of study. Jade has earned her 99.2 grade point average through hard work in her academic program that has included 16 AP courses. Independently, Jade also took two additional AP tests. Jade is a member of the National Honor Society, a National AP Scholar and an AP Capstone Diploma candidate.
Throughout high school, Jackie has played on two volleyball teams. Last year, she was selected as the Suffolk County Volleyball Association All Conference Player. Her resume of commitments is certainly impressive from Girls Scouts to Key Club to part time jobs. Jackie serves as the Captain of the Varsity Quiz Bowl. Recently, Jackie lead her Virtual Enterprise team as the CFO to national prominence by placing third. Jackie and has taken strong interests in climate change, women’s rights and racial inequality. She certainly is not a passive teenager but rather, one who is aware and hopes to make a difference in the world by studying International Relations at the University of Miami.

SCHULTE’S TAVERN MASTIC BEACH Brad Shupe, Local History Librarian, Mastics-Moriches-Shirley Community Library, communitylibrary.org Paul Schulte arrived in Mastic Beach in 1921. He built and owned the original Mastic Beach Hotel constructed in 1924 and opened the grocery store and delicatessen at the 5 corners section of town. A civic leader and volunteer fireman, Schulte became known as the original “Mayor of Mastic Beach.” With his continuing success, he opened Schulte’s Tavern in 1933, known later as Schulte’s Stable, a meeting place at the 4 corners on Neighborhood Road through the 1930s, 40s and 50s. Ken Spooner, a local historian, writes about Mr. Schulte: “ this photo was taken around 1930 prior to his moving the stable from the Smith Estate. Paul would turn the stable into the landmark tavern known as Paul Schulte's Tavern in 1932. "Schultzee"

was the way everyone said his name up until he passed away in the early '50's. And lo and behold that's how the postcard company spelled it.” Paul Schulte built his restaurant, delicatessen and grocery store shortly after he put up his Mastic Beach hotel in 1926. The hotel was located in Section 1, over on the east side behind the Mastic Beach Property Owners Association clubhouse on Orchid Dr. & what was then known as Birch Rd. in the original "Old" town. Home Guardian Co. soon started developing land on the west side of the Knapp Estate, but direct passage to the west via Birch / Neighborhood road was blocked by J. F. Knapp's land. This may have been why a second fire department known as the West End Fire Department was created. After Paul sold the hotel to Sal Azzatto in '32, it caught fire and burned to the ground in 1937.
