With just one year on the job, Stephanie Bukowinski, an Emergency Service Dispatcher Trainee at the Suffolk County Fire & Rescue Emergency Services, received a 911 call. On the other end was a man asking for an ambulance because his wife went into labor while in their car. Bukowinski instructed the man to pull the vehicle over to safety, then proceeded to give instructions to the couple as they awaited arrival of the ambulance. Shortly thereafter, the couple’s baby girl was born.

It is calls like Bukowinski and the estimated 300 emergency dispatchers receive daily that prompted Suffolk County legislators and organized labor to call on State lawmakers to pass legislation to grant first responder status for emergency dispatchers.

Suffolk County Presiding Officer, Rob Calarco, was joined by county lawmakers, Suffolk Association of Municipal Employees and emergency responders at a press conference where they called upon the New York State lawmakers to pass legislation before the end of the 2021 legislative session that would give emergency dispatchers the first responder status. At press time, the Assembly passed their version of the bill.

“These people are very well trained, they’re dedicated, and they take their job home with them,” Levler said. The “critical first responder status designation,” Levler said, would make 911 dispatchers and operators eligible for the same protections and training opportunities afforded to other first responders but would have no fiscal impact on taxpayers.

An AME memorandum notes that while emergency response staff and all first responders tend to be highly stress tolerant, they are not immune to the effects of traumatic and job related stress.

The legislation would therefore qualify Suffolk’s dispatchers and emergency response workers for training and first responder and PTSD counseling programs to help cope with the stresses of the job. AME further cites the “911 operator shortage” that Suffolk County is currently struggling with, compounded by the 911 calls that require significant training and situational assessment skills and sound judgment, strong public and internal relations, teamwork and advanced multitasking skills as reasons to underscore the need for passage of legislation for first responder status designation.

Reached for comment, New York State Senator Anthony Palumbo said the bill will provide recognition for the Communications workers who are the public’s first point of contact in an emergency. “They are often talking individuals through life saving procedures and keeping people calm while police and rescue teams head to

the scene,” Palumbo said, noting, “The high stress nature of their position was exacerbated on the front lines during this pandemic.” Palumbo said the stressful nature of their job has resulted in high attrition rates, stating, “This bill will give Communications workers the recognition they deserve, additional training and mental health services as well as a boost to morale so we can recruit and retain new employees.” Palumbo said he is “hopeful that we can get it on the calendar by the end of the week.”

New York State Assemblyman Joe DeStefano, a co-sponsor of the bill, said the Assembly “unanimously agreed that our front line dispatchers and emergency operators should be recognized as ‘First Responders’ and must be afforded the respect and resources their status deserves. I am honored to have been an early supporter of this measure and I’m confident our bill will sail through the Senate and be quickly signed into law by the governor.”

The Boston Globe today published an op-ed by Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone and the North Atlantic Rail Alliance outlining their vision of the North Atlantic Rail initiative, which aims to provide 100-minute high-speed rail service between New York City and Boston, connecting Long Island, New Haven, Hartford, and Providence along the way.

During his campaign, President Biden called for “sparking the second great railroad revolution” and committed to building “the cleanest, safest, and fastest rail system in the world.”

We applaud and embrace Biden’s vision. As a coalition of mayors and county executives from New York and New England, we support a specific and urgent call to action: Now is the time to connect the North Atlantic region with high-speed rail.

Specifically, we support the vision of the North Atlantic Rail initiative, which aims to provide 100-minute high-speed rail service between New York City and Boston, connecting Long Island, New Haven, Hartford, and Providence along the way. It would use a new tunnel under Long Island Sound, follow an existing alignment to Hartford, new right of way to Providence, and then on to Boston.

This high-speed line would also serve as the spine of a new regional

The economic case is strong. For just over $100 billion, or roughly 5 percent of the president’s proposed $2 trillion American Jobs Plan for infrastructure investment, we can create an integrated market for ideas, capital, and talent in a region with more than 10 percent of America’s population, more innovators than anywhere but Silicon Valley, and a $3 trillion economy — larger than that of all but five countries.

The equity case is also strong. The region includes the booming (prepandemic) economies of metro Boston and New York City. But the region also includes dozens of mid-sized cities, with large Black and brown communities, unnecessarily disconnected from those global centers. Regional rail connectivity expands housing and job opportunity throughout the region.

Our cities have a unique set of assets upon which to build a new economy,

including proximity to the world’s largest concentration of research universities and teaching hospitals, a highly educated and skilled workforce, and cutting-edge manufacturing companies.

The climate case is especially strong.

A fast regional rail system powered by renewable energy would address the existential threat of climate change by cutting congestion on our roads, dramatically reducing air pollution, and accelerating the shift away from fossil fuels.

And it can be done. The proposed North Atlantic Rail network replicates the successful 21st-century high-speed inter-city and regional rail networks already in place in virtually every industrialized country in Europe and Asia. It’s time for us to catch up.

Biden has been one of the most prominent supporters of rail investment in America throughout his career and made infrastructure central to his campaign and transition.

Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg strongly advocated for regional high-speed rail as mayor of South Bend, Ind. And he knows well the importance of unlocking the economic potential of America’s small and mid-size cities. The president’s infrastructure plan is ambitious and bold.

But the truth is, the proposed American Jobs Plan doesn’t go far enough when it comes to rail. We

cannot afford to simply repair what’s broken or make modest, incremental improvements if we want to usher in the second great rail revolution.

For North Atlantic Rail, the tracks in Congress are aligned to make it happen.

Our region has a powerful congressional delegation. Earlier this month, two dozen members of Congress from New York and New England signed onto a letter endorsing the North Atlantic Rail initiative.

The letter calls for the authorization of a new multi-state public benefit corporation, North Atlantic Rail Inc., to design and deliver the project, using expedited permitting and innovative procurement, project management, and labor practices to complete this

investment on-time and on-budget within a 20-year period.

A reliable, extensive high-speed rail is not a pie-in-the-sky idea. The rest of the world has already done it.

For the sake of the economy, equity, and the environment, the time has come for America to step into the 21st century and make regional high-speed rail a reality — especially here in New England and New York as part of the North Atlantic Rail vision.

Suffolk County Police Homicide Squad detectives are investigating the drowning death of a 12-year-old girl in Bellport happened a week ago.

Fifth Precinct officers responded to 36 Association Road after a child was found unresponsive in the backyard pool.

The child, Addison DeLosSantos, a resident of the home, was transported by South Country Ambulance to Long Island Community Hospital in East Patchogue where she was pronounced dead.

The investigation is continuing.

On Sunday June 13th, Long Island ABATE welcomed over 250 motorcyclists to their Annual Veterans Appreciation Run. All donations received at this run will be matched by three benefactors and stay right here on Long Island for our local veterans organizations. With your help let’s make this our $1 million year! Everyone met up at North Sea fire department in Southampton that morning. The weather was absolutely perfect that day! Long Island ABATE’s treasurer Bill Quinn held the flag ceremony center field of where everyone gathered.

He presented flags to some of our veterans of various military branches.

After the ceremony it was kickstands up and a ride over Lance Cpl Jordan Haerter Veterans Memorial Bridge headed into Sag harbor. As the motorcycle procession proceeded over the bridge they were welcomed by Cpl Jordan Haerter’s family, friends and spectators waving our American flags proudly!

Suffolk County Legislator Nick Caracappa Receives an Award from the Middle Country School District’s Board of Education

At a recent Board of Education meeting for the Middle Country Central School District, Suffolk County Legislator Nick Caracappa was recognized and awarded with a Certificate of Appreciation.

The certificate was the Board of Ed’s way of thanking the Legislator for his efforts in successfully eliminating Stagecoach Elementary School in Selden as a polling location for general and special elections. Caracappa, a former Middle Country School Board member himself is currently in negotiations with the Suffolk County Board of

Elections to eliminate polling locations from other schools in the district as well.

“Thank you Legislative Caracappa for following through on protecting our students by removing the voting from Stagecoach Elementary. We certainly appreciate the partnership,” stated Middle Country School’s Board of Ed. President, Dr. Karen J. Lessler. Superintendent Dr. Roberta Gerold commented, “Middle Country thanks Legislator Caracappa for his commitment to the safety and security of our district – we appreciate him!”

Rape and Strangulation Horrifies Coram, Renews Fight Against Vagrancy at the Four Corners

Vagrancy has exploded into the forefronts of the minds of Coram residents with the forcible rape and strangulation of a woman in a wooded area off Skips Road between Mill Road and Route 112 in the middle of the afternoon, according to a widely circulated plea for help by the Coram Civic Association. The location, known as the Four Corners, is across the street from the Suffolk County Transit bus stop, adjacent to the Home Depot in the Coram Plaza Shopping Center near Middle Country Road, a location longknown as a mass gathering spot for vagrants including drug dealers, drug users and prostitutes.

“The Coram Civic Association is seeking your assistance in solving a longterm problem that continues to grow exponentially in our community,” the group said in a letter to local officials, including County Executive Steve Bellone and Sixth Precinct Commander Patrick Reilly. “This problem has created financial obstacles for our commercial areas as well as increased personal safety issues and quality of life concerns for the residents of our hamlet of Coram and all the residents of our greater Longwood Community.”

Arrested in the rape case was Jesse Diaz, 29, of Shirley, who prosecutors said

attacked a woman as she walked along a wooded path off Route 112 as a shortcut home from shopping. She heard the man run up behind her before he grabbed her by the throat, prosecutors said. The woman struggled and scratched his face and she tried to scream for help, but Diaz strangled her until she lost consciousness.

Police were able to identify Diaz through evidence and surveillance video from local stores near where the rape occurred, Suffolk County Deputy Chief of Detectives Mathew Lewis said. “This was a heinous crime, the likes of which doesn’t occur often in Suffolk County.”

“Vagrancy has been proliferating at an alarming rate for many years and, left unattended, seems to feed upon itself,” the Civic Association said. “Vagrancy exists in our community in many forms such as panhandlers, prostitutes, drug users, drug dealers, gang members, and the long-term unemployed. The results are the loss of potential customers who

new businesses reluctant to consider opening in our growing number of vacant storefronts. We have been intermittently addressing these issues with our town, county, and state representatives along with our SCPD and have had periodic, short term, positive outcomes; however, emphasis is on the phrase ‘short term’… and even those have been offset by the

current critical levels,” Assemblyman Joe DeStefano said in a letter to the Sixth Precinct inspector. “I’m confident that working together, you can plan and implement an effective resolution for the residents and business owners of Coram and the greater Longwood Community.”

and seemingly endlessly -- on the causes of the vagrancy problem we face, our members, and most all of the residents of Coram, just want vagrancy dealt with and removed from our commercial centers,” the civic association wrote. “In resolving this issue, we are not looking to first solve the issue of homelessness, or unemployment, or single parent households, or drug rehabilitation, or any other ‘contributing’ factors. What we feel is needed first is legislation back on the books regarding loitering and vagrancy. Shop owners need the legal right to insist that the loiterers, panhandlers, drug dealers, drug users, prostitutes and other vagrants must not congregate by their storefronts or in the shopping centers…and police need the legal authority to move these vagrants away from the commercial areas…and not through the tedious and onerous ‘Affidavit of Trespass’ process. This affidavit process has served more as a diversion from addressing the problem than as a solution to the problem. Store owners and shoppers need an immediate result, not a costly, drawn out, legal process.”

“The residents are looking for longterm solutions and their government owes it to them,” Assemblyman DeStefano said. “This is a horrendous quality of life issue that must be addressed.”

Seven Suffolk County students earned first place in their grade level for standout experiments in the annual Elementary School Science Fair sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy’s Brookhaven National Laboratory.

Volunteer judges considered a total 184 science projects by students in kindergarten through sixth grade. Fifteen students received honorable mentions for their experiments. Students qualify for Brookhaven Lab’s competition by winning science fairs held by their schools.

Finding fun in the scientific process

This is the second year that the Office of Educational Programming (OEP) at Brookhaven Lab organized a virtual science fair to ensure that local students had the opportunity to participate safely amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

Each year, the competition offers thousands of students a chance to gain experience–and have fun–applying the scientific method. The Brookhaven Lab event recognizes the achievement of the students in winning their school fair and acknowledges the best of these projects.

Brookhaven Lab Celebrates Top Science Fair Students Science Fair encourages students to utilize the scientific method and answer a question that they have independently developed,” said Amanda Horn, a Brookhaven Lab educator who coordinated the virtual science fair. “It encourages the students to think like a scientist and share their results with others. Our goal is to provide students with an opportunity to show off their skills and share what they have learned.”

Students tackled a wide range of questions with their experiments, including exploring how the moon phases affect our feelings to testing different materials, investigating how to improve their at-home internet connection, and finding safe masks for their friends and families.

First grader Ashleigh Bruno, who garnered a top spot for an experiment on acid rain, evaluated the pH levels in local water sources to learn if animals could live safely within them.

“I was really happy because I learned how to test the water and it was really fun to do with my family,” Bruno said.

Third grader Emerson Gaeta explored whether wearing a frame with different kinds of face masks could improve how we hear people who are speaking while wearing a mask. She used a foam head equipped with a speaker to measure how loud sounds came through the masks.

“I was here once before and I didn’t win,” Gaeta said. “Now I won first place so I’m really happy about that.”

Fourth grader Matthew Mercorella said he was excited to learn of his first-place win for his experiment seeking to find the best sound-proofing material. He found the best part of his project to be the process of testing materials by playing music through a speaker placed inside of them to see which put out the lowest and highest decibels.

A Matter of Offence?

Dear Editor, I need to say and share with you that I am a white male born citizen of America, English speaking with a Christian upbringing. I was taught to treat my parents, all elders with reverence as a child. But lately, as an early 50’s “Baby Boomer” about to become 70 years of age, I have encountered the unfortunate misunderstandings of my actions in this day-in-age social climate. My most recent situation took place at an early 2021 voting location. I was assigned to work as a “Republican Inspector”, when filling out a name tag with my name, I noticed the wording on the sticky label was in English and underneath in Spanish, since I do not speak Spanish, I drew a thin line through it, thinking it would be politically correct for me. To my surprise, only one coworker brought to my attention that they felt offended by what I did. After a polite mature discussion with this person, fully understanding their point of view, I immediately wholeheartedly apologized and thought all was good.

The next day, I was dismissed from my assignment by the SCBOE, because someone made a complaint, and when I questioned by whom, the answer given me was, “it’s still being investigated”? So, in the meantime, the SCBOE removes me, by this action I am being penalized, having no rights or any due process in my defense.

Clearly it could not have been a voter, only a coworker, causing me to lose over $700.00 in earnings , without any defense to clear me. It really hurts me to be treated this way after over 25 years serving the SCBOE from 1995. “I will get over this”, I only hope the whiner is happy, whomever they be? Thank you!

William Floyd High School Senior Earns Prestigious St. Joseph’s College Presidential Scholarship

William Floyd High School senior Ryleigh Pafitis has been selected to receive the prestigious Presidential Scholarship to attend St. Joseph’s College, a full-tuition scholarship for all four years of undergraduate education. Ryleigh has been accepted into the nursing program and in the future plans to become a nurse practitioner serving in a hospital neonatal nursing unit.

At William Floyd, Ryleigh has participated in the award-winning Medical Assisting program over the past two years, which will help her in her studies and future career. She has also challenged herself by taking courses such as advanced placement biology to help her in her future career.

Ryleigh is a well-rounded young lady who excels at communicating in any environment and can make others around her laugh and feel comfortable,” said Jason McKay, William Floyd High School medical assisting teacher. “She is a strong student and has always done well in her classes. I am excited and proud of

A talented soccer player, Ryleigh will suit up for the Golden Eagles and play midfield on the pitch. As a Colonial, she served as the captain of the girls varsity soccer team for the past two years, won numerous awards including All-County honors and the team’s most valuable player award during her junior and senior seasons, as well as earning a spot on the Newsday “Top 100” Long Island girls soccer players for 2021. She has also played in various club soccer programs including the Center Moriches Hotshot Soccer Club 19 and over women’s league since eighth grade, becoming a captain as a sophomore, as well volunteering to coach five- and six-year old soccer players prior to the pandemic.

SUFFOLK CLOSEUP

BY KARL GROSSMAN COVID-19 has taken a substantial toll in Suffolk County. As of last week, exactly 4,000 people have died from the disease since it appeared in Suffolk last year, according to the county’s Department of Health Services figures. The number of “reported” COVID-19 cases in Suffolk, says the department, has been 201,070.

Meanwhile, some “57.6% of the [county’s] total population of 1,481,093 has received at least one dose” of an antiCOVID-19 vaccine. This includes “70.1% of the population ages 18+” receiving “at least one dose.”

These figures are presented by the department on its COVID-19 website at: https://suffolkcountyny.gov/ Departments/Health-Services/HealthBulletins/Novel-Coronavirus Also, last week the 600,000th death in the United States from COVID-19 occurred. There have been 52,995 people in New York State who have lost their lives to the disease. The first death from COVID-19 death in Suffolk happened on March 16, 2020.

Governor Andrew Cuomo announced last week that because more than 70% of adults in the state had received at least one dose of an anti-COVID vaccine, New York is lifting most COVID restrictions. “This is a momentous day and we deserve it because it has been a long, long road,” said

Mr. Cuomo. The easing means “a return to life as we know it.” Can it really be “a return to life as we know it?” One sure wishes so after a harrowing, isolating, extended ordeal since the disease struck.

There was a realistic front-page headline last week of Newsday: “COVID CAUTION.” Its article began by reporting that “a day after…Cuomo lifted COVID-19 restrictions across a wide swath of social activities, some on Long Island said… they are not ready to abandon the safety measures adopted to stop the spread of the virus.”

The Newsday story importantly noted: “Two of the three available vaccines require two doses, spaced weeks apart, to be considered complete. On Wednesday, the level of adults in the state who had one shot was 70.4%, but only 51% of the total state population was fully vaccinated, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.”

It quoted a Columbia University School of Public Health professor of epidemiology and medicine, Wafaa El-Sadr, saying: “I feel nervous about it. Our biggest shield against this is vaccinations, and we still have a long way to go to get sufficient coverage of vaccinations.”

Vaccination has been the key to challenging COVID here and elsewhere.

As Suffolk Health Commissioner Dr. Gregson Pigott said as the drive kicked off in December: “Immunization is one of the greatest medical advances of modern times.

We’ve used vaccines to entirely wipe out smallpox. And in the U.S., we’ve come extremely close to eradicating polio, diphtheria, measles, mumps, rubella, and tetanus, among others. We are hopeful that Suffolk County residents will look to the successes of immunization and get the vaccine as soon as it becomes available to them.”

But some don’t take seriously the amazing medical research that the COVID-19 vaccines represent. And in nations around the world, there are inadequate supplies desperately needed.

Meanwhile, Daily Mail.com just headlined: “EXCLUSIVE: The postpandemic summer is in full swing in The Hamptons.” It reported: “People were lined up at restaurants and the house parties… that had disappeared from Hamptons agendas during the shutdown have struck up again,” it reported.

The Times ran a front-page story this month stating: “As reports of new COVID-19 cases and deaths plummet, and as many Americans venture out mask-free

As coronavirus variants spread and restrictions are eased, experts fear that the virus eventually could surge again…Experts now believe that the United States may never achieve herd immunity, the point at which the virus dies out.” The article ran next to the lead story on the Times front page with a headline about the Biden administration sending 500 million doses of anti-COVID vaccines “To Nations in Need.” The piece included President Biden’s declaration that “we have to end” COVID “not just at home, which

we’re doing, but everywhere.”

It’s not just the South. Consider Livingston and neighboring Linn County in Missouri. Both had “confirmed” cases “down to zero” but in late May “had the highest number of new COVID-19 cases… not just in Missouri but the country,” said USA Today. Their “fully vaccinated” rate: “under 30% of residents.”

With COVID-19 a highly-infectious disease and with variants continuing, this worldwide plague must be dealt with fully and globally if we are to really be in a postpandemic period.

BY TOM BARTON The Yankees season has been looked down on seemingly since Opening Day. The fans have called for General Manager Brian Cashman’s head, manager Aaron Boone’s firing, and about every underachieving superstar has been in trade speculation. Most of the baseball media have been piling on the Yanks problems as well and all seems lost in Yankee Land.

But this past week the Yankees threw us all a dose of reality. Folks, the Yankees will be just fine. New York swept the Blue Jays and looking at their record they are firmly above .500 and in the race. Sure, this wasn’t the start anyone wanted, but the pessimism is just too much right now. The Yankees opened the year with about a 6 to 1 betting odds to win the World Series and they were a heavy favorite to win

the AL East as well. Now they are all the way at +350 to win the East, and their World Series odds have nearly doubled at 11 to 1 odds.

The one thing that should give Yankees fans comfort is what Brian Cashman said this week. He made it very clear that the Yankees will indeed be buyers at the trade deadline. In a week that we watched the Yanks get a sweep of the Blue Jays, who were in their rearview mirror, and the Rays lost their ace starter for the year when Tyler Glasnow went down, the best news fans got was Cashman’s reassurance that ... well this is still the Yankees.

The College Baseball World Series began on Saturday, June 19th and this year has a lot of terrific prospects who are going to figure prominently in the Major League Baseball Draft later this summer. Every college baseball program in America begins their spring season dreaming of getting to Omaha and basking in the bright lights of a College World Series appearance.

Eight teams get to Omaha each year to compete for the College World Series title and quite a few teams were expected to be here in Omaha this June.

• Arizona – its 18 College World Series appearances in program history is tied for 7th all time and its (4) College World Series titles is tied for 5th all time.

• Mississippi State – this is their 3rd consecutive appearance in Omaha, and they are going in as one of the favorites.

• North Carolina State – this is their first appearance since 2013 when a team led by future major leaguers Carlos Rodon and Trea Turner led them.

• Stanford – one of the most winning college baseball programs of all time and a 17 time entrant in the College

Fantasy Sports

World Series, this is their first trip to Omaha since 2008. Hard to believe Stanford has been away for 13 years.

• Tennessee – another proud program with numerous past appearances but has not made it to Omaha since 2005.

Yankees Back from the Dead when they started an all righty lineup, for a Bronx Bombers team that is not only unheard of, but highlights a very poorly constructed team. This team desperately needs a lefty bat. They also have been running out Aaron Judge and Brett Gardner in center. Clearly a stopgap situation, New York needs a Center Fielder as well. So while the baseball world wonders where Story might end up, the Yankees should be chasing someone like Ketel Marte or Starling Marte. Both correct two issues.

So while the baseball world has the Yankees dead and buried, this past week Cashman and the Yankees played, have them sitting up like the Undertaker. Don’t forget these are still the Yankees.

This Year’s College World Series of interest for those of you playing in dynasty leagues, as it is very rare for any player to step on to a professional diamond in the same year as playing in

• Texas – has appeared a record 37 times in the College World Series. This is a powerhouse program seeking its 7th national title which would be the 2nd most titles in NCAA history. Only Southern California has more titles at 12.

• Vanderbilt – the returning champs from the 2020 season, if they were to repeat by winning it all this year, they would be only the 7th team in CWS history to repeat as champion. They have been led all season by a pair of strong starting pitchers each projected to be amongst the Top 5 selected in the 2021 Amateur Draft.

The top tandem of Jack Leiter and Kumar Rocker of Vanderbilt clearly are the two most talked about players for this entire college baseball season but they are far from the only two prospects who are going to be scouted for this year’s College World Series.

Keep in mind, these players are only

a College World Series. But these two starting pitchers from Vanderbilt are special and are not going to need to spend much time in the minor leagues at all.

• Ty Madden, RHP – Texas – Madden has been scouted all spring from major league scouts and has settled in as a projection in the low 20’s of this year’s draft. Any team drafting Madden will be getting a durable mid-rotation starter with good control and a fastball

reliever. But hey, saves count in fantasy baseball also right? This could be a guy who is in line for a big show in Omaha.

Definitely a guy to watch.

• Luca Tresh, C – North Carolina State – Playing behind 2020 1st round pick Patrick Bailey has somewhat hurt Tresh as Bailey is a tough comparison for Tresh to measure up to. Though Tresh has a very strong arm his movements behind the plate are not as refined as Bailey’s were,

but there is no reason to believe that with some refinement he can’t be an adequate backstop. The bat is special as he crushes fastballs with some of the highest exit velocities recorded in college baseball this season.

• Jose Torres, SS – North Carolina State – Not expected to be a 1st round draft pick this summer, Torres is nonetheless exciting because many pro evaluators see him as the top defensive shortstop in the country. He managed to cut his strikeout percentage down to 17% this spring, though evaluators are concerned by his swing and miss tendencies against breaking pitches.

Still, Torres has sneaky pull power and the excellence of his defense means he will get to the major leagues fairly quickly.

For those of you playing in dynasty leagues, it is worthy to note that the two highest ranked players to be drafted this summer will not be playing in the College World Series. Jordan Lawlor and Marcelo Mayer are still in high school. Lawlor made a commitment to accept a baseball scholarship from Vanderbilt, but if he is drafted 1st overall, as expected, he will almost certainly sign a pro contract and never step foot on a college campus.

Inheriting a House with Medicaid Lien

Q: I inherited a house with a Medicaid lien on it. Do I have to pay it?

A:

A Medicaid lien on a home must eventually be satisfied. Typically, a Medicaid lien is placed on real property when an individual is receiving benefits through the Medicaid program during his or her lifetime and still owns a primary residence. Even when the home is exempt, it can become subject to a lien when the Medicaid recipient passes away.

An example is when a Medicaid recipient is in a long-term care nursing facility but still owns a residence.

Normally, the residence would make the Medicaid recipient ineligible for benefits.

However, if the Medicaid recipient applies for benefits with “an intent to return home”, the Department of Social Services will process the application and start benefits despite the value of the residence. When an application is processed with an intent to return home, it is very common for the Department

of Social Services to place a lien on the property at the time of approval. If the Medicaid recipient returns home, the lien is lifted. If the Medicaid recipient dies in the long-term care facility, Medicaid can become a creditor of the estate and also place a lien which will remain and must be paid before the beneficiaries of the estate inherit the real property.

Another example of a lien being placed on a home is when the homeowner received Community based Medicaid for several years. The primary residence is exempt and can remain in the name of the Medicaid recipient; however, upon the passing of the individual, the Department of Social Services can seek to recover any monies that they paid for services on behalf of the Medicaid recipient from the primary residence. The individuals inheriting the house, will need to satisfy Medicaid before receiving their share of the inheritance.

However, payment of the lien can be deferred under certain circumstances, such as if the lien cannot be paid in full unless the property is sold. The beneficiaries may have to demonstrate that they lack liquidity to pay off the lien or set up a payment schedule. Payment of the lien does not need to necessarily come from the sale of the real property. The person inheriting can pay off Medicaid with outside monies or mortgage the property. Before a payment is made, make sure a payoff letter or release is given to avoid any complications in the future.

There are estate planning techniques that can potentially avoid a Medicaid lien – if done during the Medicaid recipient’s life. An estate planning consultation is always a good idea to hear the options and potentially avoid this pitfall.

It is important to note that there are some instances where a lien is incorrectly

placed on the property – such as when certain dependent relatives live in the home. Additionally, estate recovery could be waived, in whole or in part, if the beneficiary can show that the recovery would result in undue hardship.

SUMMER WITH US 2021

IN THE CHILDREN’S DEPARTMENT What is your favorite thing about the Children’s Summer program this year?

My favorite thing about our Summer Reading Program is that it is so flexible. A few years ago, we decided to make summer at the library more accessible to all. We took away required book counting and just asked children and their families to “Summer With Us”. We want children to come to the library because they have fun here and it’s a place where they can find something they may love to read, not because it is an assignment.

How does the 2021 Library Summer program work?

This summer, the Children’s Department will be giving out Summer With Us journals to children entering K-7th grade. These journals can be used to document all of the fun they have this summer. They can scribble, start a diary, list the books they read, draw a picture inspired by something they read or just collect stickers or keep track of the library programs they attend. We have a journal station in the Children’s Department with all kinds of fun art supplies, stickers and craft material, where kids can decorate and add to their journals.

Kids can show us what they are reading throughout the season by sharing their journals with us. Some children may read a lot, and others might only read a book or two this summer, but both are OK. Each time children show a staff member their journal, they can enter the Summer With Us Raffle. Winners will be chosen each week throughout the summer, so there are lots of opportunities to participate. Prizes will be assorted.

Summer!

For children birth-entering Kindergarten, we offer a reading program called 1KB4K (1,000 Books Before Kindergarten). Reading aloud to children starting at birth helps them develop the literacy skills needed to learn to read, and this program gets families started with fun prizes along the way.

We will have lots of in-person programs in the library and out in the community as well as continuing to offer our grab and go kits and crafts to go so keep an eye on our program calendar for the most up-to-date information.

Babies - You’re My Little Bookworm by Nicola Edwards - A sweet board book about the time spent with baby and their parent during storytimes together.

What is the most important thing people should know about the library summer program?

We start with our largest event which is our Summer With Us Kick Off, Friday June 25, 1:00-5:00pm. The event is open to everyone. We give out free ice cream, children each receive a free book and their Summer With Us Journals as well as a few other goodies and activities to participate in.

SUMMER WITH US 2021 IN THE TEEN DEPARTMENT What is your favorite thing about the Teen Summer program this year?

My favorite thing about the Teen Summer program this year is the Outdoor Movie Night on June 25, which is kick off day. We are showing Spider-Man Far From Home. The movie is going to be shown in our parking lot beginning at 7:30 PM. Kick off day is always full of excitement, and it is my hope this adds to it.

I am also excited about the new way we are doing the Teen Summer Program this year.

How does the 2021 Library Summer program work?

This year’s Summer Program is different than any way we have ever done it before. This year teens can earn raffle tickets to be entered into our weekly raffle. Each week for eight weeks there will be a different raffle that teens can enter. Teens can earn raffles for something as simple as just visiting the Teen Department to reading a book and telling us about it. Raffles include: an $20 Amazon gift card, Waterproof speaker and pool float bundle, a Game Night bundle and more.

What popular books is everyone going to be reading this summer?

Our library staff works hard to promote recreational summer reading for our school-age children to prevent the “summer slide” – which is when children can decline in reading levels without their formal school schedule. The library is here to help with our

excellent collections of books to suit all tastes and in all formats. We are ready to recommend books in print, in digital format, or in audio format.

Our “Libby” app offers free easy downloadable audio and e-books on the go. “Flipster” is a fun way to download an amazing array of free magazines, or you can borrow our print magazines to throw in your beach tote.

BY DOMINICK FORTE Michael the archangel is revered as the highest-ranking member of the Heavenly Host, God’s second in command, and a warriors’ warrior. He enters battle with great zeal whenever called upon to execute the battle plans of the Almighty against the forces of the Prince of Darkness. He is a brilliant military strategist and after God Himself the greatest of holy personages. His name means “Who Is as God.” The many literary references to Michael the Archangel usually speak of his military interventions and climactic confrontations with the warriors of his rebel brother Lucifer. The following littleknown anecdote about a human intervention Michael had made may surprise many people.

French kings had always made pilgrimages to Mount Saint Michael in Normandy. It is here that Charlemagne had dedicated

his kingdom to Michael. This church and monastery of the Benedictine holy men has a beautiful far-reaching view of the sea. It is an awesome sight to behold with its numerous steeples giving it the appearance of a fortress. For a time, it was a prison during the French Revolution.

There are numerous shrines of tribute erected to honor Michael the Archangel. One such is in Italy at Monte Gargano. There was once a sainted woman named Oringa who embarked with a small group of other young maidens on a pilgrimage to Monte Gargano in honor of Michael. The journey was a long one lasting over a week.

On the way a few men presented themselves to Oringa and her young friends as fellow travelers and skilled guides.

The men seemed to the young women to be sincere and pious gentlemen. They won the

Michael to the Rescue

The mysterious young man gestutred hypnotically at the rogues and paralyzed them with terror. He then led the women to safety, rescuing them from certain victimization at the hands of the imposture guides.

Michael had donned the vessel of the young man to deliver the women from harm so they could complete their pilgrimage to his shrine at Monte Gargano. This is a little-known story about Michael but it was collaborated and verified in the writings of the holy woman Saint Oringa.

BY ROBERT CHARTUK If you are a smoker, please stop. If you know a smoker, read this to them.

My mother is dying of lung cancer and it’s horrible. She was a smoker for decades and had stopped, but it was too late. She had trouble breathing for a few years and now fights for every breath. She called me at five o’clock in the morning the other day because she couldn’t breathe. The oxygen tank she was tethered to for the last 11 months provided no relief. As I waited for the ambulance, she was choking and shaking and I thought she was going to die with me at her bedside. At the hospital, she deteriorated fast. My brother is driving overnight from Virginia to be with her when visiting hours open and I’m leaving in a few minutes to meet him there. This will probably be the last time we see her.

My sister cannot visit from Delaware because she’s also on oxygen from smoking and is too sick to travel.

She started smoking as a teenager and instead of enjoying her Golden Years, she’s dying a horrible death from cigarettes. They both started when smoking was promoted as glamorous and movie stars and even athletes

were featured in ads. Once they were hooked, quitting became a nightmare and it became a choice between withdrawal or ignoring the fact that it was going to kill them. My sister tried everything—cold turkey, hypnosis, the patch—but couldn’t shake it. She said she used to hallucinate and see cigarettes floating above her head.

My dad died of lung cancer too. He was a smoker during the war because that’s what they did. In his later years, he couldn’t breathe either. Every few weeks I had to take him to the hospital to get his lungs drained. The amount of fluid that came out would shock you.

He wanted to die peacefully at home, but one morning when I saw him, I called 911 and they took him away.

They drained his fluid and suggested that they operate. Even though he was 89 years old, he was a fighter and went for it. After the surgery he never regained consciousness and died a few days later. I like to think that it was a blessing that he went this way instead of drowning in his own fluids; maybe I’m not so sure. I’ll never forget them wheeling him away. The hospital bill for his week-long stay was $400,000.

Research supports that many children who are exploited by criminals are often described as having strong needs for attention, affection and approval. They feel isolated and left out. This greatly increases their vulnerability. On the other hand, children who have a strong sense of self-worth are much more difficult to exploit. So, what can you do to help build self-esteem in your kids?

Essentially, there are four things you can give your kids to build their sense of self-worth: love, time, discipline and acceptance.

Most of the time it’s easy to love your kids. Other times, not so easy!

It’s difficult to show your love for a child who is rude, obnoxious and embarrasses you by his behavioral outbursts in public. It’s a paradox, when kids are the most difficult to love is the very time they need your love the most. Parents who stick with their kids during the rebellious and antagonistic phases as well as the sweet

and innocent ages are building a strong base of self-esteem for their kids.

One reflection of your love is the time you spend with your children.

Your children need a lot of your time.

This doesn’t mean you have to give them your undivided attention, just your presence at home can do the trick!

Disciplining your kids also is a daunting task. Setting rules fairly and sticking to them consistently can test the skill of any parent. That’s normal.

But kids who are required to follow the rules and stay within the boundaries set by their parents, no matter how much children seem to resist, feel loved and important.

The issue of acceptance, of approval, is possibly one of the toughest of all. It’s natural for parents to have high hopes for their kids. We’d all like our kids to excel academically, be to star player or the class president. One of the keys to building self-esteem is accepting your child for who he or she is. Every child is

She’s long gone; another horrible, yet preventable, death. Their other

younger sister, and her husband, agonizingly went from their smoking as well, as did my great aunt. My

mother’s older sister and brother, both non-smokers, dodged the nicotine bullet and are fine.

I see people standing outside buildings smoking; thankfully they’re no longer allowed to ignite their poisonous clouds inside, but there was a time when you couldn’t avoid it. I know the secondhand smoke had an impact on me and my brother and I can remember my mother driving us with the windows rolled up and a cigarette in her mouth. My brother had terrible asthma and it’s hard to imagine that no one couldn’t figure out why. I always wondered why many of my teammates had more lung power than me as I struggled in sports at an early age.

I watch young girls smoking and now vaping, which is probably just as bad since it’s quite obvious that you shouldn’t be breathing anything into your lungs except good, clean air. I want to tell them to come meet my mother and sister. That might shock them into stopping, probably save their life. I know my family would be happy if just a single person heard what happened to them and decided to quit before it’s too late.

Building your Child’s Self-Esteem an individual with unique personality traits. We should expect our child to try as hard as they possibly can, but whether they make straight A’s in the process or barely pass, our approval of their efforts and our validation of their self-worth is essential to their wellbeing.

SIMPLE THINGS TO DO

• Spend as much time with your kids as possible.

• Always try to be there for the significant milestones in their lives.

• Set clear rules and stick to them – set limits in a firm, but loving way.

• Take the positive approach. Praise your kids for their good choices, and help them learn from their poor ones.

• Respect your children’s feelings.

Never dismiss their doubts, fears or ideas.

• Encourage achievement without being overbearing. Never shame kids

for their failures.

• Share your own beliefs and values

with your kids, and listen to your kids to help give them a greater sense of selfimportance.

Knitting for Others

By Barbara Guarino Kruk There are so many wonderful, talented people in this world and many of them who live right here in our beautiful community. Caring, loving, generous people who willingly give of themselves to make others happy.

Dolores Houck was one of those loving people who gave of herself without reservation.

She was a devoted wife to her beloved husband, a loving mother to her nine children, thirteen grandchildren and six great grandchildren. As if that was not enough, she managed to find time to be a devoted member of her church and community. She was an active member of Homemakers Unit 33.

I knew a dedicated group of women who spent weeks on crafting the most beautiful blankets that they in turn would donate to various causes like Birthright for babies, Veterans organizations, and the sick and elderly.

It may not seem like such a profound gift, but I can tell you from my own personal experience, when my husband

Connie was very ill, he was generously given one of those blankets. To this day I still have it and cherish it because it represents love. These blankets are a labor of love and lucky the person who is the recipient of this gift. Anyone can buy a store-bought item; it takes time, effort, and care to make something from scratch. Dolores was that kind of human being.

She was a woman of faith, love, and devotion. Her love and pride in her family, her town and her parish of St. Jude is a testament to the woman she was. Dolores led by example. She loved life, country music and was a diehard Yankees Baseball fan. She grew up in an era of hard work and personal sacrifice during the Great Depression.

Her fortitude in the face of challenge was her strength.

While Dolores Yvonne Houck will be sorely missed by all who were blessed to know her, she lives on in the hearts and minds of her loving family and friends. May the blankets she so devotedly made to keep others safe and warm bring her safely to Paradise.

DOLORES YVONNE HOUCK, 89, of Mastic Beach, passed away on June 7, 2021 at Oasis Skilled Nursing Home. Dolores was born in the Bronx to Elias and Elsie Gomes. She was a long-time resident of Mastic Beach for the past sixty-five years.

She enjoyed crocheting and knitting, made blankets for Veterans and babies, and other charities. She was a Yankee Baseball fan, an active member of the Homemakers Unit 33, a devoted member of St. Jude’s RC Church, she enjoyed country music, dancing, and playing cards. She was predeceased by her beloved husband Deward to whom she was married for sixty-three years; Her beloved sons Bruce and Charles predeceased her. She was the loving mother of Deward Jr. (Rebecca) Susan (Eugene) Frohnhoefer, Eric, Doreen, Keith (Helen), Wayne (Kathy), Laura (Walter) Langdon. She was the proud and cherished grandmother of thirteen and great grandmother of six. She was the loving sister to Gerald Gomes. Family and friends came together on Monday at Roma Funeral Home in Shirley to remember and celebrate her life. A Mass was offered at St. Jude’s RC Church in Mastic Beach on Tuesday and interment followed at Long Island National Cemetery, Pinelawn.

SCPD Mourns Loss of Former Police Commissioner John Gallagher

The Suffolk County Police Department mourns the loss of former Police Commissioner John Gallagher who died last night at the age of 84.

Gallagher served as Police Commissioner of the Suffolk County Police Department from 1997 to 2004, a career his family said he was most proud of. He was a graduate of the FBI Academy’s prestigious National Executive Institute and was a guest lecturer at the FBI Academy in Quantico, VA. When Gallagher retired from the police department, then Suffolk County Executive Robert Gaffney awarded him the Suffolk County Medal of Honor, the county’s highest honor. Additionally, the Suffolk County Community College Board of Trustees renamed the police

academy at the Grant Campus—The John C. Gallagher Suffolk County Police Academy.

Prior to becoming Suffolk’s Police Commissioner, Gallagher served as Deputy County Executive from 1992 to 1997 under Suffolk Executive Gaffney, during which he advised on public safety issues. Gallagher also served as executive dean of Suffolk County Community College’s Michael J. Grant Campus in Brentwood between 1974 and 1980.

“Former Police Commissioner John Gallagher spent a lifetime of dedicated service to the people of Suffolk County,” Acting Police Commissioner Stuart Cameron said, “He was a true gentleman and an outstanding leader, who oversaw

our department’s response to the tragic September 11th attacks. I extend my thoughts and prayers to his family and for those of us in the department who worked under his leadership, we mourn the loss of this incredible man.”

Gallagher’s wife Patricia predeceased him in 2017. He is survived by three children, seven grandchildren and one great granddaughter.

Visitation will be at OB Davis Funeral Home, 1001 Route 25A, Miller Place on Monday, June 21 between 6 p.m. and 8 p.m.; Tuesday, June 22, between 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. A funeral Mass will be held on Wednesday, June 23 at St. Louis de Montfort in Sound Beach, time to be determined. Interment will be private.

A Legacy in Weiss and floriculture industry. He began work at an early age, alongside his grandfather Otto and father Kurt, producing azaleas in Queens, NY. He went on to study and graduate from Cornell University in 1957 and completed graduate studies at the University of Maryland. Eventually, Russell and his father branched out to begin the present-day company Kurt Weiss Greenhouses Inc., headquartered in Center Moriches, NY.

Russell Charles Weiss (August 1, 1936 – June 15, 2021), better known to many as “Mr. Weiss”, passed away peacefully with friends and family by his side. Russell was born on Long Island after his parents arrived from Germany. He resided in Center Moriches and East Moriches on the east end of Long Island for much of his life.

As of late, he resided in Westhampton, NY and Windermere, FL. Russell leaves behind a tremendous legacy, having touched millions of families in the country by means of his life-long passion and work. He was a pioneer and legend in the greenhouse

Russell served as President and CEO from 1972 until handing the company off to the next generation in 2016. Under Russell’s leadership, the company quickly developed from growing azaleas for the New York City carriage trade, to a fullfledged growing operation including azaleas, hydrangeas, annuals, perennials, tropical plants, and more. By the early 1980s, Russell’s grand vision helped build the company into a mini conglomerate providing landscaping services to the Park Avenue Mall in Manhattan, wholesaling other growers’ crops, manufacturing horticultural equipment, as well as building and distributing boilers for greenhouses and even shipping coal, for example, when rising energy costs caused many greenhouse businesses to suffer. He purchased Dauernheim, one of America’s oldest potted-plant growers, in addition to a company that produced water mats used to supply water to the plants, creating

a vertically and horizontally integrated business. Hard work and determination increased the company’s revenue by more than 110x over 40 years and included 18 locations spread over Long Island, Canada, upstate New York, Connecticut, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, and Florida.

By the early 2000s, at its peak, the company was ranked as the largest greenhouse operation in North America with over 12.5 million heated square feet and approximately 2,600 employees. Part of Russell’s legacy lives on through the company, now in its 5th generation. His work, mannerisms, sayings, and passion are expressed today by his family, employees, friends, and through his patented plants that illuminate homes and gardens across the country. Russell loved everything large; business, work ethic, generosity, and even animals, specifically big exotic birds (he had a collection of emus and peacocks).

He had an insatiable appetite for travel, especially if it involved visiting greenhouse operations. He would often visit Europe just for a day trip or hop in the car and drive to Pennsylvania and back to “check on things.” His determination and love of life was obvious in his later years as he defied all odds with regard to his health.

Noordland Greenhouses, an engineering and construction company owned by Russell, was responsible for building greenhouses around the world, notably the

construction of “The Land” at Epcot Center in 1983. He also built greenhouses at his alma mater, Cornell University. In addition to his key business responsibilities, Russell was formerly President of the Long Island Flower Growers Association, was a member of the Board of Directors of Rabo Bank, and held a board seat at the Seeley Conference Board of Directors at Cornell University.

Russell was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather. He is survived by his wife, Teresa Weiss, his two sons, Kirk and Wayne Weiss, his daughtersin-law Marcella and Audrey Weiss, his daughters Wendy Weiss Dailey and Anna Weiss Abrams, his son-in-law Leland Abrams, his step-son Damian Olech, 15 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren.

His son Douglas Weiss predeceased him.

Funeral services will be held privately for family. However, a memorial service on Tuesday, June 22 from 2:00pm to 5:00pm at 95 Main Street, Center Moriches, NY will be open to anyone whose life was touched
