Superintendent Losquadro Distributes Flowers, Plant Material from Holtsville Ecology Site Greenhouses

Brookhaven Highway Superintendent Daniel Losquadro recently assisted with the distribution of donated flowers and plant material from the Holtsville Ecology Site to be used for beautification projects across Brookhaven Town.

Grown in on-site greenhouses, the flowers and plant material are requested by local non-profit organizations, civic groups, school districts and hospitals.

Some groups choose to borrow the plants for decoration at specific events; others use the plants to enhance community gardens or beautify local parks. Each year, Mather Hospital requests a donation of seasonal and sensory plants which are used in

hands-on gardening experiences to advance healing among patients.

Brookhaven is coming alive after more than a year that’s been hard.”

“The Ecology Site staff do such a wonderful job propagating, growing and caring for a beautiful variety of flowers, from annuals and perennials to flats and house plants,” said Superintendent Losquadro. “We are happy to provide them to assist local groups and organizations in their efforts to beautify our Town.”

Rocky Point Civic Association President Jennifer Carlson said, “Two years ago, I became the park steward to the park behind Tilda’s Bakery (Veteran’s Park) in Rocky Point. I requested flowers and it makes a huge impact on the park. The addition of the flowers welcomes visitors and makes the park look more cared for. When the park looks cared for, people are more respectful of the space.”

Sound Beach Civic Association President Bea Ruberto said, “This program allows us to put color in our community and beautify our parks.

159 Bellport High School Teddy Bear Safety Lessons Students Inducted into National Honor Society Verne W. Critz Elementary School kindergarten students in the South Country Central School District learned about how to be personally responsible for their own safety during a virtual Teddy Bear Clinic. The Teddy Bear Clinic is an injury prevention education program sponsored by the Stony Brook University Trauma Center and engages students as they pretend to be doctors and nurses.

During the clinic, Kristi Lyn Ladowski, MHP, briefed the students on car and bike safety, stranger danger and the importance of keeping the brain safe by wearing a helmet during applicable sports. She demonstrated how a helmet keeps the brain safe by dropping an egg dressed with a helmet and one without to show the importance of this safety

Bellport High School’s National Honor Society inducted 159 students during a virtual ceremony this spring. Coadviser Suzanne Hines explained that the district’s annual induction included students from the Class of 2020, who were unable to be officially inducted due to the pandemic, and students from the Class of 2021. The celebration commenced with the Cadet Core, who led viewers in the Pledge of Allegiance, and the Bellport High School String Quartet, who played the national anthem.

Co-adviser Danielle Stuckey said that the inductees have proven themselves capable of achieving success in academics, sports, clubs and community service. “It is to your benefit to continue to make yourself a well-rounded person,” she told the inductees.

Principal Timothy Hogan noted that having maintained a 90% grade point average or above, a society requirement, is a remarkable achievement in itself, but he is more impressed by the leadership, service and character components that each inductee possesses. “These components paint a broader picture of you and the school community,” Mr. Hogan said. “You are leaders in the building and to those around you.”

Mr. Hogan then led the inductees in the National Honor Society Oath, making their membership in this prestigious organization official.

Brookhaven Students Participate in a Fun Farm Day Brookhaven Elementary School kindergarten students usually attend a field trip to a local farm each year to learn about various animals. Due to restrictions imposed by the pandemic, teachers used their creativity instead to bring the farm to life at school. On Farm Day, kindergartners walked into their “barns” complete with hay and “farm animals” and participated in myriad fun-filled activity stations to complete their farm experience.

To start, students sang, “Take Me Out to the Barnyard,” following the words on the Smart Board. They also watched a virtual field trip of a farm.

Giavanna Gribbins, a kindergartener at Brookhaven Elementary School, collected the same number of eggs rolled on the dice and fills the carton with brown eggs to make an even 10.

During an art station activity, the little farmers made mud out of shaving cream, glue and brown paint to complete their paintings of a pig and a barn. They also made memory frames out of stickers and popsicle sticks. After learning how farmers

calm sheep before shearing them for the summer, the students sheared their own sheep created on paper and using fluffy cotton.

A math activity required students to roll an inflatable dice and to collect the same number of eggs in their egg cartons. They had to figure out how many more eggs made a group of 10. After a lesson on how farmers use corn to feed the animals, the students shucked corn cobs, estimated how many kernels were on the cob and then counted how many kernels they actually had. A corn printable and stickers also assisted the students with playing an addition game with double dice.

One of the favorite activities was milking Bessie the plastic, blown-up cow. After learning how the farmer carefully milks the cow by pulling on the udders, the students tried their hands at milking Bessie.

WFHS Medical Club Wins $1,000 Spark! Challenge Prize

The William Floyd High School Medical Club, under the guidance of science teacher Terri Randall, recently participated in the Northwell Health “Spark! Challenge: Healthcare Heroes,” a competition of more than 1,500 students from 48 schools across the tri-state area focused on career exploration complete with a live virtual awards ceremony. William Floyd High School Medical Club members entered a submission into the video category and won third place and a $1,000 prize!

The award-winning submission, “Family Medicine Physicians,” created by students and set to the theme of “Superman,” playfully highlighted many of the things that physicians and other healthcare workers do that set them apart as heroes.

Challenge, students also had the opportunity to participate in engaging, online educational sessions for 20 different healthcare career fields. One educational session, which profiled a career in Family Medicine, had students follow along with three

Oasis Celebrates in Derby Style As the Belmont Stakes Approaches, Belmont Race Horse, Jockey Visited Nursing Home Residents Celebrated the Triple Crown Season Retired Belmont racehorse Millennium Jet and female jockey, Autumn Lavertu, visited the residents of Oasis Rehabilitation and Nursing last week.

Residents met the horse and jockey and competed for prizes. Food and entertainment were provided.

Oasis staff members were dressed in Derby attire while residents made their own derby hats to wear for the races.

Suffolk County Legislator Nick Caracappa Holds Press Conference Demanding Safer Conditions on New York State Roadways

Last Friday, Suffolk County Legislator Nick Caracappa (4th LD) led the charge with colleagues in State, County, and Town Government, community and civic leaders, as well as motorcycle organizations and residents to demand the Governor’s immediate attention to the unsafe conditions on New York State roads in Suffolk County. These include, but are not limited to I-495 (The Long Island Expressway), Route 27 (Sunrise Highway) and Route 25 (Middle Country Road).

After issuing a letter signed by all 17 Suffolk County Legislators to Governor Andrew Cuomo and NYS Department of Transportation Commissioner Marie Therese Dominguez, Caracappa decided the urgency of these dire conditions would be better conveyed by holding a press conference, backed by bi-partisan government officials and community support.

“These roadways are currently in deplorable condition and require immediate attention and proper, longterm repair. The current state of these roadways present very hazardous and dangerous driving conditions to the millions of commuters who depend upon these roadways on a daily basis. Whether it be for work or leisure, commuters place themselves in harm’s way when entering these roadways throughout Suffolk County and beyond,” Caracappa stressed in his remarks. “These State roadways service over one million commuters on a daily basis. I’ve personally observed horrendous and extremely dangerous driving conditions, which undoubtedly cause flat tires, severe auto body damage as well as automobile accidents with personal injury. These incidents are absolutely avoidable and unnecessary for our families, friends, and tourists.”

Caracappa also mentioned that repairs for these roadways are scheduled for completion by 20232024, which is an unacceptable time frame. At a time when New York State has received unprecedented levels of federal aid, he felt the time for immediate and decisive action must be now. Several other County Legislators, members of the State Assembly and Senate, Brookhaven Town Supervisor Ed Romaine, and concerned citizens of the community echoed his plea for immediate repairs to keep our commuters safe.

Suffolk Legislature Meetings to Reopen In-Person Public Attendance Inside the Rose Caracappa Auditorium, where the legislature’s June 1-4 committee meetings and the June 8 general meeting will be held, there will be designated seating areas for vaccinated and unvaccinated individuals. In-person public testimony will be accepted during a committee or general meeting’s public portion and during public hearings scheduled for June 8.

Suffolk County Legislature Presiding Officer Rob Calarco has announced that legislative meetings held at the William H. Rogers Legislature Building in Hauppauge will reopen to in-person public attendance starting Tuesday, June 1, opening the door to in-person public comment at upcoming committee and general meetings.

“Now that we are turning a corner in this pandemic, we are thrilled to be able to welcome the public back into the Suffolk County Legislature’s Hauppauge building,” said Presiding Officer Calarco. “We have slowly and safely been bringing more and more legislators back to the horseshoe in our auditorium, and now, the public will be able to attend legislature committee

and general meetings in person. Bit by bit, we are regaining semblances of normalcy thanks to more and more people getting vaccinated and declining numbers of new COVID-19 cases.”

In accordance with county and state safety protocols, members of the public who wish to attend a legislative meeting at the William H. Rogers Legislature Building will undergo temperature checks. Visitors who are vaccinated against COVID-19 and who are willing to provide proof of vaccination, if requested, will not be required to wear a mask while inside the building. Those who are not vaccinated or who do not wish to disclose their vaccination status will be required to wear a mask at all times while inside the building.

In addition to now having the option to testify at legislative meetings in person, members of the public may continue to offer comment remotely over Zoom or by email, regular mail or voicemail. Those interested in addressing legislators over Zoom may sign up at www.scnylegislature.us/ CommitteePublicPortion.

Mazzarella Right to Work Following Special Election Victory

By Jennine Kubik Fresh off his special election victory, Suffolk Legislator Elect Jim Mazzarella hit the ground running to fulfill his promise as a hard-working advocate of the Third District. At the top of his agenda is making sure the Forge River sewer project stays on track and working with county and town departments on quality-of-life issues such as policing and absentee landlords.

“Government must perform for the people and l will be on the job every day to make sure the taxpayers get what they pay for,” Mazzarella said.

The new legislator, who will have to run again in November as he fills out the term of former legislator Rudy Sunderman, said another priority is road work funding and keeping streets clean and safe. “A lot of money is being put out there for infrastructure and COVID relief and l want to make we get our fair share,” he said. “I will lead a constant drum beat for more funding and services for our area.

Mazzarella noted a key to his success will be working relationships with his fellow legislators, local leaders and officials at other levels of government, a skill he perfected as a union executive. “We’re all in the same boat here in Suffolk County and I’m willing to work with everyone to see to it that we’re all doing the right things for the taxpayers,” Mazzarella said.

His opponent in the special election, former Legislator Kate Browning, was criticized early in the campaign for trying to circumvent term limit laws approved by Suffolk voters to bring new voices and ideas to country government. It took the politically-appointed state Court of Appeals to put her back on the ballot after a Supreme Court justice removed her, an attempt the voters ultimately rejected at the ballot box.

“In Jim Mazzarella, we have a fresh voice and new direction for county government, something the voters obviously want,” said Suffolk GOP Chairman

Jesse Garcia. “Jim will move the community forward, not backwards toward the era represented by Kate Browning.”

BY TOM BARTON Tim Tebow is as polarizing a figure as there has ever been in sports. From his time as a college football standout, to his NFL career as a QB, until a playoff win in Denver, then his eventual stab at playing major league baseball, Tebow has been on the lips of every sports fan. This new venture though seems to have ruffled quite a bit of feathers and have divided the masses.

Tim Tebow has been signed by the Jaguars ... as a tight end. Tebow has never played tight end before, anywhere, at any time. Many point to a sort of nepotism because Urban Myer (his old college coach) is the new head coach in Jacksonville.

Their calls of the idea that Tebow is stealing a job from another

deserving player and this is nothing but a gimmick resonate loud and clear.

There is another side though and that is the side that argues this: Jacksonville is the worst franchise in the NFL. They have the weakest fanbase and their ratings and attendance is putrid. Why not bring in Tebow? One week after he signed he had secured the top 5 selling jerseys in the NFL. People are paying attention to the franchise.

The second argument is Tebow has always been a great competitor. He will be coming into a situation with a new coach and setting a tone in the locker room. Finally, we can’t rule out the fact that Tim Tebow is actually useful. We live in an NFL now where Taysom Hill has been

The staggering pace of injuries in this 2021 season leaves many of us who play fantasy baseball frustrated beyond belief.

For those who play in re-draft leagues many of these teams with long term injuries can just consider dropping these players. For those lucky enough to play in Dynasty formats, where a certain number of players can be protected from season to season, there is some relief there.

I’ve long held that the Memorial Day Holiday Weekend is an excellent yardstick to gauge where your team is at and to make some frank assessments as to where your team stands. So, now that we have put Memorial Day behind us, sometimes a good spring cleaning is finally at hand. Here are some thoughts on injured players, minor league call ups and the remaining 2/3 of the baseball season.

• The NY Mets have shut down Noah Syndergaard for 6 weeks as he has inflammation in his elbow. Syndergaard underwent Tommy John elbow ligament replacement surgery in 2020. While an MRI showed that the UCL ligament was intact and no structural damage was done to it, this is not good news. You might as well consider Syndergaard to be lost for the 2021 season. He will be on a strict innings count when/if he does finally take to the mound

and pitch and this is one hell of a violent delivery to be banking on. Cut him from your NL only league and place him on your team’s IL in a mixed league.

• Luis Robert of the Chicago White Sox suffered a Grade 3 tear of his hip flexor tendon on May 3rd and was diagnosed as missing anywhere from 12 to 16 weeks. Of note, Robert chose to forego surgery and take a course of rest and rehabilitation. If the 16 weeks holds true, he won’t be back until September then. What I don’t like is that by opting to not have the surgery, the tendon may not be sufficiently healed which could lead to further problems down the line. I would protect him for my Dynasty league but you can cut him today in a draft from scratch format.

• Zac Gallen of the Arizona Diamondbacks is a much more tricky injury to gauge.

Gallen has had a host of issues with his elbow this year and if you ask me they are not unrelated. Late in spring training, Gallen took an awkward swing warming up to hit, and suffered a hairline fracture of his forearm. When I hear hairline it always makes me panic, because I wonder if the injury will fully heal in the advanced timetables major league baseball requires.

What was peculiar about this injury is that he mostly felt it only when he threw

What to do About the Rash of Injuries his curveball. At any rate, Gallen rested and rehabbed the injury and eventually got on the field and was throwing pretty well. And then on May 12th it was revealed that Gallen had suffered a minor strain of a section of his ulnar collateral ligament.

That the press release went to such lengths to describe a section of the ligament that needs replacement in Tommy John surgery was terrifying for sure. Here is the tricky part. Gallen was prescribed rest to allow the sprain to heal and will be throwing a bullpen session right after June 1st. If all goes well, you could see a timeline of Gallen being ready to pitch full time in late June/ early July. He could still give you a quality half season of starts. But I am going to argue that whatever happened to his elbow in that ill-fated swing from spring training damaged his ulnar collateral ligament, and pitching only aggravated the ligament further. I fully expect Zac Gallen to undergo a ligament replacement because he has a damaged UCL. I am certainly no medical doctor, but someone who has learned the drill by direct observation of how these injuries progress and worsen. I would place him on my IL in a mixed league and wait this out. In a season long league I would listen to any and all offers. I don’t see Zac Gallen going the distance here in 2021. And if Gallen does need surgery, you are not

getting him back until July of 2022, AT THE EARLIEST!

History clearly shows that war, whether won or lost, has profound effects not only on the warriors, but also on the civilian population, particularly on the families of those in the military. A recent survey found that 44% of those who’ve served in Iraq and Afghanistan had problems readjusting after their return home. About one in five experienced Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI), which is a concussion.

Other common problems include Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), depression, anxiety, problematic alcohol use, and thoughts of suicide. One of the major problems of the recent wars, including the Vietnam War is that of Moral Injury (MI) where you saw or did something against your beliefs. Moral Injury causes one to feel guilty and full of shame and suicide. This is one of the biggest problems the veterans face and not only try to hide it

from the family, but is the main cause of them committing suicide.

Many veterans suffer from more than one health condition. These problems were caused by what they saw or did in the war, which they try to hide from the family when they come home for fear it will be too shocking for the family.

While hiding the horror from the family may be the right thing to do, you need to lessen the stress or it will become unbearable. So seek out a peer or member of the clergy that you can speak with and unload the stress. The Suffolk County American Legion has trained one hundred legionnaires as peer to peer to be available as helpers. The Northport VA hospital and the Stony Brook Veterans Home both have chaplains that can be of great help to veterans suffering from the stresses of deployments.

important when dealing with the children. They have probably changed the most not only in size, but in habits and activities that you are not adjusted to.

The biggest mistake the veteran can make in his return to civilian life is to self medicate with alcohol or drugs. The alcohol, or the drugs are not only of no real help, but cause more serious problems. For one thing they become habit forming and another major problem they cause is that of isolation from the family and others, thus turning off any personal help. The isolation may eventually lead to a separation or divorce.

Steps in a Real Estate Closing

Q: What are the steps in a residential closing?

A:

The closing is the final step in a real estate sale where the buyer obtains title to the property. The time between an offer’s acceptance and the closing date—evidenced by a deed from the seller or stock certificate for a cooperative apartment –is filled with activity.

In New York, most buyers and sellers hire an attorney to represent their interests in the real estate transaction. The attorneys negotiate the contract, who will pay what fees and handle adjustments of items such as taxes for the closing. The seller’s attorney is responsible for drafting the initial contract of sale, clearing title, preparing the deed and tax transfer documents, obtaining any payoffs, and gathering the appropriate checks to pay liens or judgments found in the title report. The purchaser’s attorney is responsible for reviewing title, having the purchaser bring the correct checks to the closing table, to explain the lender’s documents that the purchaser is signing, and to ensure that the title company is insuring

the purchaser’s title to the property. Both attorneys explain the documents to their clients before obtaining their signatures, draft specific affidavits required by the title company, and otherwise confirm the required financial documents have been provided.

A report of the findings is provided to the parties -opening the door to further negotiations and possible pitfalls.

An inspection will need to be conducted by the buyer, to learn the condition of the home, condo or coop. This is a delicate point in the real estate transaction, because if defects are discovered, the buyer may rescind the offer, ask for a reduced purchase price, or condition the sale on the seller making specific repairs. Otherwise the buyer takes the property “as is.”

Ideally, all of the complications are resolved before the parties get to the closing table, although occasionally an issue will arise during the walk through of the property that will need to be addressed.

The closing is typically attended by the seller, purchaser, their respective attorneys, the title closer, the bank attorney (if the purchaser has obtained financing) and the real estate agents. However, post COVID, closings have looked a little different. Real estate closings can be conducted by mail, with parties pre-signing documents.

After the parties agree on the terms, the contract is executed and the buyer provides the down payment, which is held by the seller’s attorney in escrow. If not a cash sale, the buyer then officially submits the loan application to obtain a mortgage. If the sale involves a coop, a package has to be submitted to the coop board for approval.

The 2021 Atlantic hurricane season is officially off to an early start: Subtropical Storm Ana formed in the waters 200 miles northeast of Bermuda at 5 a.m.

EDT Saturday. Ana’s formation date of May 22 comes over a week before the official June 1 start of the Atlantic hurricane season and marks the seventh consecutive year that a pre-season named storm has formed. The previous record was four consecutive years, set in 19511954. Although the National Hurricane Center has not changed the June 1 start date of the Atlantic hurricane season, it did move the launch date of its daily Tropical Weather Outlooks to May 15 starting this year.

It does for me. And just because Ana petered out doesn’t mean they all will...

There are six basics you should stock for your home: 1) water, 2) food, 3) first aid supplies, 4) clothing and bedding, 5) tools and emergency supplies and 6) special items. Keep the items that you would most likely need during an evacuation in an easy-to-carry container.

Essentials

• Battery-operated radio and extra batteries • Flashlight and extra batteries (do not include candles—candles cause more fires after a disaster than anything else)

Water

Store water in plastic containers, such as large soft drink bottles. Avoid using containers that will decompose or break, such as milk cartons or glass bottles. A person who is generally active needs to drink at least two quarts of water each day. Hot environments and intense physical activity can double that amount.

Children, nursing mothers and ill people will need to drink even more. Store three gallons of water per person (one gallon for each day, for each person). Keep at least a three-day supply of water (two quarts for drinking, two quarts for food preparation and sanitation) for each person in the household.

Food

Store at least a three-day supply of nonperishable food. Select foods that require no refrigeration, preparation, or cooking and little or no water. If you must heat food, pack a can of Sterno and matches. Select food items that are compact and lightweight. Include a selection of the following foods in your disaster supplies kit: • Ready-to-eat canned meats • Canned fruits, dried fruits and nuts • Canned vegetables

Formula Diapers/wipes Bottles Powdered formula, milk or baby food Medications

Important Family Documents

Keep these records in a waterproof, portable container: • Copy of will, insurance policies, contracts, deeds, stocks, bonds • Copy of passports, Social Security cards, immunization records • Record of credit card accounts • Record of bank account numbers, names and phone numbers • Inventory of valuable household goods, important telephone numbers • Family records (birth, marriage, death certificates) • Copy of Supplemental Security Income award letter

So, do you ever wonder what the world’s #1 Coast Guard tells its members to do when hurricanes approach? I mean, after all, Coast Guard personnel by the nature of their duties live by the sea!

Well, here it is. Not everyone can do all these things – but it will make sense to ask yourself, “should I?”

OBITUARY GORDON L. HACKNEY, MASTER ELECTRICIAN, CENTER MORICHES FIRE CHIEF Master electrician, long-time Center Moriches fireman and former chief Gordon L. Hackney, 80, passed away peacefully May 28 at the Firemen’s Home in Hudson, NY. Gordon joined the Center Moriches Fire Department in 1969 and devoted his life to the fire services. He served as chief of the department and captain of various units. The many plaques on his wall show a remarkable run of 16 years as points leader in responding to calls, as well as many citations and certificates of appreciation.

He was a founding member of the Moriches Bay Historical Society and served as president. Much of his time and energy for 33 years went toward raising funds and renovating the historic Haven’s House, which is now a treasured local history museum. He also served on the board of Mt. Pleasant Cemetery and was a generous benefactor to the Center Moriches Library, Garden Club, and many other organizations.

Gordon was self-employed as a master electrician with his step-father Wilbur E. Ross for many years serving his friends and neighbors. An only child, Gordon was two years old when his father was killed during the Battle of the Bulge. He served as an unofficial historian for the Moriches Bay Area and is well versed in fire history. He amassed an extensive antique lock and key collection, as well as old and rare light bulbs. He preserved a pictorial history of the Moriches Bay Area through an antique post card collection.

Viewing will be open at the Center Moriches Firehouse from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. on Thursday, June 3 with a full firefighter service afforded to a past chief at 8 p.m. Burial services will be conducted the next day at the firehouse beginning at 9 a.m. with interment at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery. Chief Hackney will be transported in the department’s antique Brockway fire truck driven by Danny Hebberd in a procession that will pass his long-time home on Ocean Avenue.
