Looming Fiscal Crisis at South Country School District

South Country Board of Education elections are on May 17th. It appears the voters’ decision will have a lasting impact as the District enters a financial crisis over the next decade.

“The most important question in voters’ minds may need to be “Who are the best candidates to handle a crisis?”

The looming financial crisis is news to most of the community. If you’ve watched any of the BOE meetings prior to February, you’d have thought the District was in a great position.

Until suddenly, you read about a possible 7.76% tax hike next year and huge financial deficits to start in 2-3 years,” Lisette Ruch, a local resident and finance of one of the school board candidates.

The current board actual budgeted tax levy was reduced to 1.75% by using reserve funds and lowering the budget.

Ultimately in coming years taxpayers will have to pay off at minimum $21 million in misappropriated funds.

So, where did this crisis suddenly come from?

District officials and the current BOE insist it’s the result of “The Mismatch.”

Others, who have reviewed the audited financial reports and discussed it with the State Department of Education, say it’s Mismanagement “The current crisis is the result of the failure over the last 10 years of the district to manage the district’s finances correctly and properly managed the building aid NYS was sending,” noted resident Kerri Russo.

What is “The Mismatch”?

Between 2006 and 2010, it appears the District issued roughly $110M (million) in bonds to pay for school building improvements. The bonds were to be paid back over 20 years.

The District though secured special building aid that ended in June 2009 from NYSED which reimbursed those projects at 95% for principal and interest. With interest, the total State Building Aid comes to $138M of the $153M. The cost to the taxpayers was only $5.5M, plus $9.5M in interest on the bonds, totaling $15M. By law, the State only pays out aid for these type of projects over 15 years. That meant that the district was receiving each year, for the 15 years NYS aided the projects, more money than it was paying on the bonds. As a result it appears there are 5 years where the District is still paying off the bonds, but has already received all the State Aid upfront. This is what the current board of education is calling the “The Mismatch.”

Why would the District take out 20-year bonds when they were being reimbursed over 15 years?

Greg Miglino, Jr, current candidate and the former President of the BOE who was on the board for the last two (2008&2009) of the four bonds passes by the community explained why 20year bonds were sought. “At the time the bonds were first issued for Phase I (2005), the District had a $4.6M deficit that had been discovered when the district switched auditors in 2005. The Districts credit rating was A2, which means it could not borrow at favorable interest rates. A 20-year term offered a lower payment to the taxpayers with the goal of refinancing the debt once rates came down and the districts bond rating improved. This was the best option for the community at the time. In 2006 a new group joined the Board of Education and developed a plan to get the District out of the deficit and improve our credit rating. We did just that, between 2006 and 2010, we increased our reserve from $0 to a $16.1M surplus all while paying off

the $4.6 million in debt we inherited.

As a result, Moody’s the credit agency that rates school districts increased our bond rating to A1. This put us in a much better position to refinance the bonds when they became eligible,” stated Miglino.

“It appears In 2015 and 2016, the District refinanced the original bonds.

According to School officials doing so saved the taxpayers $8M in interest.

Unfortunately, they also claim that nobody realized before or since then that they were receiving payments greater than what they were spending on the Bonds and as a result just spent the additional $21 Million. As a result the District now has to come up with rest of the $36M that is owed instead of just the original $15M that was planned. Spending the $21M earmarked for the payment of the bonds on operational expenses, instead of it’s intend use will increased the tax burden on our community by $21M” said Amy Thomas, a candidate for school board.

Why didn’t we wait to do these Building projects until we were in a better financial position and could get the proper financing?

According to Mr. Miglino, “If we did not start the projects when we did, we would not have gotten 95% State Aid reimbursement. That special rate was set to expire in June off 2009. We then would have only been reimbursed at the districts usual rate of 76%. That 19% difference means the projects would have cost the taxpayers $20.9 in principal alone.” “Instead the district received the benefit of $110 million dollars for projects and was only responsible for $5.5 million, even less when you take out the money we also received for Excel Aid at the time.” “So, waiting to make needed repairs and upgrades wasn’t an option.”

Why didn’t District officials keep the $21M in State Aid money in reserve to pay the bonds?

In community meetings held on April 11th and 28th, the District admitted it had received $126M in State Aid. They further stated that district has only paid $105M on the bonds, leaving what should be a surplus of $21M. When asked on April 11th and again on April 28th, District officials stated that they had failed to realize the overpayment of $21M and it was used to pay for district operations.

District officials stated that they didn’t know how the money sent by NYS was apportioned and that they receive it in lump sums. School Officials went on to say “The monies received from NYS are booked and recorded as revenue in the year received and budgeted/spent as operating expenditures.” Community member Kerim Odekon point out that the District is given a Form SA-777 by the State Department of Education every year which clearly delineates how the State Aid money is categorized. So, it is clear which monies are designated as Building Aid. In response, School officials admitted no one had looked at the bond repayment schedule since the refinancing was completed in 2015, and that it should have been looked at.

email and instead of receiving specific answers to our questions as requested, we received the following general statement from Superintendent Doctor Joseph Giani, “Throughout the 20222023 budget development process, the South Country Central School District Board of Education and Administration have clearly informed the community that the district’s financial situation resulted from actions taken more than a decade ago. All funds from the 2005-2010 bonds have been audited and are accounted for. All building aid receipts have been accounted for and were properly recorded as revenue in the appropriate fiscal year. The district has also taken steps to ensure a more thorough transfer of information from one board to the next, from one administrator to the next, and from our retained financial advisors, bond counsel and auditors.

In addition to messages sent to our community and posted to our website, the district has openly discussed the situation at Board of Education meetings, as well as during a meeting with the PTA following last week’s budget hearing. All information that has been discussed is available on the district’s website and YouTube, where Board meetings are livestreamed for those in our community unable to attend in person.”

Library Services to Temporarily Relocate Starting June 6 Move is necessitated by COVID-19 and supply chain construction delays.

A robust schedule of remote and off-site programming will be offered.

The Mastics-Moriches-Shirley Community Library announced today that starting Monday, June 6, main library services will be temporarily relocated to the Mastic Recreation Center at 15 Herkimer Street. The move is necessitated because of construction delays at the satellite branches and the need to keep the renovation of the main library, located at 407 William Floyd Parkway in Shirley, on-schedule and within budget.

“We are grateful to the Town of Brookhaven for allowing us to operate from the facility at no cost, and to provide core library services from the building while we complete construction of two brand-new satellite branches in Mastic Beach and Moriches,” said library director Kerri Rosalia. “This move is fiscally responsible and will allow us to keep the main library renovation on-track.”

Originally scheduled to be completed by the first quarter of 2022, the Mastic Beach and Moriches satellite branches have been plagued by permitting delays due to the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as building supply shortages. Based on current estimates, the Mastic Beach facility will be completed by October; the Moriches facility by December.

Core library services will be moved to the new branches once construction is complete and will continue at those facilities while the main library undergoes a complete, 18-month long renovation.

“We have been working to expedite this project wherever possible,” said Chris Barletta, operations manager of Sandpebble Builders, Inc., the construction manager for the project. “But COVID-19 delays and international supply chain issues are well outside of our control.” Barletta added that because of building supply price escalations combined with the contractual rise in construction labor costs, every additional month that the main library stays open will cost taxpayers at least $50,000. “We need to make this move now to stay within the allotted budget approved by taxpayers in 2019.”

media lending, and a myriad of indoor programs. This will include special programs for older adults that will coincide with the reestablishment of the town’s Senior Nutrition Program at the Herkimer Street facility. Plans are to combine special library programs for seniors with the mealtime scheduled on site.

In addition, a robust schedule of library programs for residents of all ages will be offered throughout the community at parks, beaches, and other outdoor locations, as has been offered in past summers. Other indoor and outdoor programming will be offered at the Knights of

Columbus located at 176 Madison Street in Mastic. The library will also continue to offer remote, online virtual programs and services.

“Community residents have come to expect a wide range of educational and informational services and programs from our library, and we intend on continuing to deliver on that promise,” commented library board president Joseph Maiorana. “In the coming weeks, complete information and program schedules will be mailed to residents as well as posted to our website and Facebook page.”

Through mailings and digital media, the community will be kept informed of the progress being made at the satellite branches during this three to five-month transition period where the library will be headquartered at the Herkimer Street facility.

Boys & Girls Club of The Bellport Area Announces Hire of Kim Livingston as Executive Director

The Boys & Girls Club of The Bellport Area (BGCBA), a leading nonprofit organization providing young people ages three to 19 with a safe environment to congregate for quality pre-school, after-school and teen programs, recently announced the hire of Kim Livingston as the Club’s new Executive Director.

In a letter sent out on behalf of the Board of Directors to families and friends, staff, community leaders and supporters, BGCBA Board President Lisa Anderson stated, “I am delighted to

announce the appointment of our new Executive Director. Ms. Kim Livingston, LMSW, will be starting on June 1, 2022.”

Ms. Livingston earned a Bachelor’s degree in Human Relations from St. Joseph’s College and a Masters in Social Work from Stony Brook University. Licensed to practice social work in the State of New York, her Long Island-based career has concentrated on children and families, primarily developing and supervising housing programs for homeless and disabled youth, most

Caracappa Meets with Fifth Graders at Hiawatha Elementary School For the past 50 years, one constant in the Mastic Beach Fire Department has been the presence of Bill Biondi where he worked his way up through the ranks to serve as Chief, Commissioner, and Chairman of the Board. At the Mastic Beach Fire Department installation on Sunday, April 24th Bill Biondi was awarded a plaque for 50 years of service to MBFD. Legislator Mazzarella honored Bill Biondi for his 50 years of service to the residents of Mastic Beach with a proclamation and thanked him.

“To have a career as a first responder that spans 50 years and still have the desire to serve is truly impressive,” said Legislator Mazzarella. “I was honored to have the opportunity to recognize Bill Biondi for all that he does for our community.”

Bill Biondi is a longtime resident of Mastic Beach and proudly served in the United States Army being honorably discharged in 1971. In that same year, he married his wife

Mary and joined the Mastic Beach Fire Department. He had a long and distinguished career retiring from LILCO and then going onto another career with the Town of Brookhaven. He spent many years working to form the incorporated Village of Mastic Beach and served as Mayor for 3 years.

During his time with the Mastic Beach Fire Department, he received several honors including Probationary Member of the Year and Firefighter of the Year. He has held multiple positions of leadership including Lieutenant, Captain, Assistant Chief, and Chief where he led the Department for 5 years.

He has since served in the capacity of Commissioner and now serves as Chairman of the Board of Fire Commissioners. He has also received recognition as Brookhaven Town Chief of the Year, Chief Driver of the Year, and was named Man of the Year by the Rotary Club of Shirley and the Mastics.

Re: April 21st edition- “Bellone Calls on Janet Yellen to Alter Tax Status of Government Grants” Dear Editor, I read your story referenced above, and was surprised that neither my office nor I were contacted to discuss any of the statements included in this very creative piece. While everyone likes a good story, I thought that the purpose of an article such as this was to inform the public of the facts associated with an issue. Unfortunately, that was not the case here.

Let’s recall the actual series of events that led up to the request from my office for an interpretation from the United States Internal Revenue Service (IRS) regarding the issuance of 1099 forms associated with septic system grant payments. The Internal Revenue Code is very clear regarding the obligation of State and local governments to issue 1099 forms associated with the distribution of grant funds, unless the authorizing legislation associated with the program specifically exempted those funds from taxation. Suffolk County’s program has distributed County and State funds.

Neither level of government has the ability to change the Internal Revenue Code regarding funds distributed to subsidize the installation of septic systems. This program, adopted by the Suffolk County Legislature in 2017, was characterized as a remedy to nitrogen pollution of the aquifer and surface waters.

Since its inception in 2018,1,614 payments have been made of combined county and state money for a total of $14, 965, 623. 95. This is an average distribution of slightly over $9,000 per system. If Suffolk County funded all septic system installation for every residence through this mechanism, more than $2.7 billion in public funds would be necessary.

As to the nature of the United States Treasury Department inquiry from my office, this occurred only after more than 10 months of request to the Bellone Administration to secure guidance from the IRS concerning the nature of the public funds distribution. The referenced “tax counsel” letter presented by the proponents of this program was tangential, referenced case law that was developed regarding an inner city housing improvement program, and reflected very little regarding the funds distribution associated with residential septic system construction subsidy. No request was ever made by the Administration, and so, as the Chief Fiscal Officer of the County of Suffolk, I fulfilled my statutory obligation to obtain clear guidance and direction from the federal government. All information submitted with the request for opinion was taken from the adopted resolutions, and promulgated rules and regulations associated with the Suffolk County Sanitary Code. Reliance upon flawed legal opinions could have put the County in the positon of being liable for unremitted income taxes, penalties and fines. This is clearly not the obligation of all those citizens who responsibly and timely pay their taxes.

I was not elected to promulgate tax law, simply to follow that which is in place that has been adopted by the Congress of the United States. The Redistricting Fiasco

And now New York State’s highest court said they shouldn’t have.

With Democratic majorities in both the State Assembly and State Senate, a redistricting plan—a map giving Democratic candidates an advantage in districts throughout the state and notably Long Island— was passed. And Democratic Governor Kathy Hochul signed off on it.

But last month, the state’s highest court, its Court of Appeals, by a 4-3 vote, rejected the plan. The court’s majority held that it was “substantially unconstitutional.”

The mapping of Congressional districts in particularly was “drawn with impermissible partisan purpose.”

A “special court master”— Jonathan Cervas with the Institute for Politics and Strategy at Carnegie Mellon University in Pennsylvania and an expert on redistricting— will redraw the map.

The plan by the Democratic majorities in the State Legislature was an extreme case of gerrymandering—the word coined for the redistricting done in 1812 under Massachusetts Governor Elbridge Gerry with the “mander” for salamander—what

The New York plan involved multiple salamander-shaped districts.

For example, Suffolk’s lst Congressional District which long consisted of the five East End towns, all of Brookhaven and most of Smithtown, was to have GOP-leaning areas between Westhampton and East Quogue in Southampton eliminated. Left of Brookhaven would be only its northern half which has a substantial Democratic presence.

Smithtown would be cherry-picked and include Democratic-inclined Commack. The district would then extend west into Islip and pull in heavily Democratic Brentwood, Central Islip and North Bay Shore.

Further west it would take in the northern portion of Babylon Town, which votes reliably Democrat, and a southern part Huntington including Democratic-voting Dix Hills. Going yet further west, the lst C.D. would extent into the Democratic bastions of Plainview and Bethpage—in Nassau County.

It cited the concern of The New York Times about gerrymandering causing a “lack of competition in general elections” which “can widen the ideological gulf between parties.”

This is because of “uncompetitive districts—that is, one-party districts,” wrote Benz.

She reported that “the percentage of competitive districts in Congress is set to shrink from an already appalling 17% after the 2010 redistricting to a truly deplorable

There are a number of organizations that have long sought reform in redistricting.

A leader in New York has been its League of Women Voters which entered a “friend of the court” brief in the challenge to the state plan. It declared: “This appeal raises a question of monumental importance: whether the courts will enforce the procedural requirements adopted by the people in the New York Constitution to prevent partisan gerrymandering…”

When the New York Yankees had their winning dynasty the ingredients that led to that were simple to see, but hard to replicate. The Bronx Bombers were anything but that. Those great Yankees teams will always be remembered for their homegrown stars, but it was the team makeup that showed through. The Yankees dominant bullpen, excellent defense and clutch hitting became the structure that team after team tried to copy for years.

The new version of the Yankees fell astray from those great teams, and that great formula. In recent years Cashman assembled teams that would wow the crowds with long home runs, defense was secondary, and pitching seemed to almost not matter. They also fell away from the undervalued and home grown talent aspects as well. All that has changed over the last year and a half ... for the better.

Sure, Rizzo and Judge combine for more home runs than some teams, and that might make us start talking about the Bombers nickname again. Those two have been excellent and there was no way this New York team was going to go completely away from the long ball. What this new type of team has emphasized though is that great pitching and superior defense can win. As of this writing those boys from the Bronx have the best defense in the American League and the best bullpen, and overall team ERA in baseball.

Most of that damage has been done because of undervalued players and home grown talent.

Clay Holmes and Michael King have been mind-bogglingly good out of the bullpen. One was obtained as a steal in a trade last year, and the other was is a homegrown talent that is finally coming into his own. Add in guys like Jordan Montgomery and Nestor Cortes in the

rotation, DJ is back, behind the plate you can see the defense shine, and the trade that brought solid defense on the side of the infield makes it easy to see this team is very different.

The blow to the ego from playing an early season hunch that fails to deliver for a fantasy baseball owner can be paralyzing and depressing. You performed your due diligence, you brought a wealth of scouting information to the table. You saw something which looked like a confirmation from early glimpses in the preseason. And then the season starts and your player is under water and performing very poorly. Then after several weeks of struggle comes the untimely announcement. Your player has been demoted back to the minor leagues and your dreams of fantasy glory have to be put on hold for some future date in time. In a redraft format you are devastated but in a dynasty format it is a pretty big setback too for slightly different reasons. Let’s look at the most recent situations.

This past week saw the minor league demotions of a few players and they are of course being driven by the requirement that major league rosters scale back from 28 players to 26. The Los Angeles Angels sent outfielder Jo Adell back to the minor leagues.

Adell had become the victim of a crowded Angels outfield and

Taylor Ward is off to a fantastic start. Adell was only seeing at bats against left handed pitching and he wasn’t getting the playing time as a 22 year old to improve and gain experience. I spoke in a previous article how avoiding these platoon arrangements is essential to your success in fantasy baseball.

Trust me on this point, the Angels’ demotion of Adell to get full playing time is the best thing for Adell’s development. This is no time to drop him in your dynasty league. I would expect a 2nd half return for Adell and a second shot here in the 2022 season. But I do understand if you are pressed for the roster spot in a redraft league.

The Seattle Mariners demotion of Matt Brash was likewise fully understandable but their approach is a little troubling. Brash was the darling of spring training and could seemingly do no wrong. He was throwing nasty breaking pitches in pinpoint locations and hitters had no chance. However, Brash did leapfrog fellow pitching prospect George Kirby who was the #2 prospect in the organization and this was a surprise. Kirby had a fine spring in his own right but the off season consensus was that he was

Either way, this doesn’t sound like a quick fix and Brash’s development timeline seems extremely cloudy at the moment. In my opinion, you can drop him from your roster in redraft formats and consider dropping him from your

Kelenic is once again off to a very shaky start here in 2022, and Hunter Greene threw one of the ugliest box scores I have seen from a pitcher this season. Kelenic is off to a 9-71 start at the plate hitting just .127 in batting average.

He has struck out 30 times in those 71 plate appearances for a strikeout % approaching 50%. It could be argued that if Jesse Winkder were not in such a slump himself Kelenic would be sent down for a minor league tune-up.

The velocity on Hunter Greene’s fastball is perfectly fine at 103 mph.

What is not fine is his location and command. Greene’s ERA stands at 8.71. He has allowed 28 hits in 20 innings pitched. His WHIP is 1.89. He has walked 11 batters in 20 innings pitched. But 10 home runs have been allowed by him. He is giving up home runs at a pace of 4.5 per 9 innings pitched. This is a prime candidate for a minor league demotion to sort things out.

Suicide is Not the Answer

BY REV. FREDERICK MILLER. PH.D. Suicide is a permanent solution to a temporary problem. Positive changes may be right around the corner that can help you. Suicide is never the answer. Stresses such as PTSD, depression, moral injury, guilt, shame, loss of a love one, getting fired, or physical health problems and pain can lead one to believe suicide is the only hope. However, just because you feel hopeless doesn’t mean that life and your situation are truly hopeless. In most cases, a variety of thinking errors (called cognitive biases) conspire to make situations seem more dire than they really are. Positive changes may be right around the corner that will forever surprise you.

The depression and thoughts may come back but they will also leave again. Allow the other emotions to come in and have their chance.

Try to remember that you control your thoughts; they do not control you. Most important, don’t use alcohol or drugs, as these substances can impact your judgment and decision making.

Stay away from people, places or

things that are triggers for you.

Seek out the positive parts of life and stay away from the negative.

Stop being critical and stop comparing yourself to others and setting unrealistic expectations for yourself.

The high suicide rate with the veterans from the Vietnam War and Terrorist War clearly demonstrate that suicide thoughts tend to be repetitive and particularly intense when a person is alone and not busy.

With the Vietnam veterans, they came home found a job, went to work and raised a family. The Vietnam War ended in 1975, so now most of those veterans are retired and their homes have become an empty nest leaving them somewhat alone and not busy. So they are recalling the depression from the war. Many of those from the Terrorist War are facing the same time problem or are coming home to an empty house and no job. The strong suggestion here is to get busy with a hobby or volunteer at a

food pantry, church or some other program. Also join a veteran organization where you can talk freely with other veterans. Also seek help from the clergy, or VA Medial, or at lest get a support or pet dog. Don’t surrender to an emotion that can simply be changed.

It is also important to realize that if you commit suicide that it will affect your entire family as well as your close friends. All the people who are close to you will be very wounded by your death, and the ones who care about you the most, or need you the most, will be the most affected.

If there is even one person in

your family (or one friend) that you care about, your suicide will carve a permanent hole into that person’s heart that will never quite successfully heal. Life will go on, of course, but living with a permanent grief is never a good state of affairs. Thus taking your own life can destroy the lives of the loved ones you leave behind.

National Safe Boating Week, May 21-27, 2022, is in the offing!

US Coast Guard Forces nationwide and especially here “Out East” have a lot of plans to take and make safety a daily, year-long event. This column is about that.

National Safe Boating Week – Why?

By 1958, boating “by the millions” rather than “by millionaires” was in full swing.

What Coast Guard statistics showed was that the democratization of boating was coming at a cost – and it wasn’t the 29-cents per gallon for the gasoline. It was accidents and fatalities.

The US Congress passed the Federal Boating Act and the National Safe Boating Week was born upon President Eisenhower’s signature. It was initially run as a committee – US Coast Guard as chairman, with the US Coast Guard Auxiliary, the Power Squadron and the Red Cross as its informal members.

It still took some time for the focused attention of the Coast Guard on boater safety to work its way through long habits and aged traditions. It wasn’t until 1973, when 1,754 people died in boating

accidents, that the trend started to reverse. Why? Why else – money, people and untiring focus!

I recently purchased an investment property. Should the property be held in an LLC or a corporation?

When purchasing investment property, it is better not to own the property in your personal name. Both a Limited Liability Company (LLC) and a Corporation (Corp) offer creditor protection. They create a separation between personal assets and assets owned by the business.

In the event of any lawsuit or liability, exposure is limited to the business’s assets. However, when choosing a business entity to hold real estate for investment, an LLC is preferable.

Here are the 5 top reasons why is LLC superior to a Corp when it comes to investment real estate: 1. LLCs avoid double taxation.

An LLC is a disregarded entity which results in the profits taxed as income to each individual owner.

A corporation is not a see-through entity. The corporation pays taxes on all profits. To pass income to the shareholders, they must be W2 employees or receive dividends which count as individual income.

Either methods causes the same profits to be taxed again. You can avoid double taxation by electing S Corp status, but you do not avoid any other drawbacks of a corporation.

2. Transferring existing real estate into a Corp is a taxable event.

If someone transfers real estate to a corporation in exchange for stock, they recognize a capital gain.

They are taxed on the difference between the original purchase price and the fair market value at time of transfer. One exception is when the transferor has “control” of the corporation immediately after the transfer. In general, “control” is defined as 80% of the vote and value of the corporation.

As you can imagine, this exception doesn’t always apply when there are multiple business owners.

3. When real property transferred into a Corp has a mortgage, capital gains tax is due even if the transferor has a controlling interest. Since the corporation assumes the mortgage

shareholders to adopt by-laws and hold annual meetings. The transfer of shares between shareholders or to a third party requires the issuance of new stocks. LLC ownership interests transfer easily from one member to another or to third parties via an Assignment of Interest. Once a property is titled in the name of the LLC, a change in ownership does not require a change in the deed or trigger a taxable event.

Throughout history, across countries and cultures, authors have been fascinated by stories involving the Prince of Darkness. Dante Algieri, in his 13th century epic poem Inferno (first book of a trilogy comprising The Divine Comedy) offers one of the most frightening and detailed depiction in all literature of Satan reigning in hell.

Paradise Lost is an epic poem in blank verse published in 1667 by the English poet John Milton. for his soul. The devil keeps his part of the deal but Faustus tries unsuccessfully to renege when the allotted time is over.

Marlow’s graphic depiction of Satan is traditional: red skin, goat horns, a tail, and bat wings.

Faust is quite different.

Mephistopheles boasts to God that he can win the soul of the beloved scholar Faust. Faust seeks knowledge of the universe,

but is frustrated and unfulfilled.

He agrees to do the devil’s bidding in hell if Mesophiles will do his on Earth. Most of what Mesophiles offers Faust are weak and salacious temptations that distract him from his pursuits and blacken his soul.

Among them is his seduction of Gretchen, an innocent maiden who dies due to his indiscretions. However, Faust does acquire virtue and wisdom from his experiences, and upon his death when Mesophiles comes to claim his soul, a host of angels appear to guide his soul to heaven. There he meets Gretchen who forgives him.

Today the devil remains a personality of interest in the world of entertainment. Among his numerous appearances are in the hit Broadway show and movie Damn Yankees, and the TV shows Supernatural and Lucifer to name a few. Perhaps his most noted appearances in today’s entertainment industry are in the novels and subsequent movies The Exorcist and Rosemary’s Baby.

OBITUARY

By Barbara Guarino Kruk There are those who hold such a pride and love for their community they spend their entire life living and working there forever. Such was the life of Samuel Cavallo. Sam, although born in Brooklyn, was a lifelong member of the Mastic/Mastic Beach and Shirley community.

A graduate of William Floyd High School, he became a successful businessperson and entrepreneur who gave back to the the town and the people he so dearly loved.

Sam died on April 27, 2022 at Stony Brook University Hospital; he was seventy years old. He was a realtor with an office on William Floyd Parkway.

Sam was proud. He was a proud American, a proud resident, and a proud businessman. He promoted not only his own business but many of the other merchants in town. One of his favorites was Onofrio’s Italian Restaurant in Mastic Beach. He would go there often to engage in lively discussion with the owners Steven (another local son) and his wife Patty and the patrons about the goings and comings of the neighborhood.

A Goodwill Ambassador Sam not only had pride of place but opinions of how to make it better – he cared about the area and its residents.

It was always interesting when Sam would call or stop by my

me about those endeavors. He was passionate about helping those children. For his valiant efforts he earned the distinction of Goodwill Ambassador, a position he was looking forward

His unbridled enthusiasm sometimes led to people misunderstanding him. His love for this community was undeniable, all one had to do was sit down with him for a few moments to realize how much he wanted to make this an even better place than it is.

The family of Samuel Cavallo mourns his death on April 27, 2022, following a brief illness. He was 70. A lifelong resident of Mastic Beach, Sam was a successful businessman and entrepreneur, and touched many lives through his charitable work. Most recently, his philanthropic efforts in Vietnam earned him the distinction of Goodwill Ambassador, a position he was looking Samuel Cavallo forward to starting shortly before his death. He was a loving friend and brother. Sam is survived by his sister Jo Cavallo of New York City. He will be missed by all who knew him. A funeral mass to celebrate Sam’s life will take place on May 22 at 11:00 AM, at St. Jude’s RC Church, Mastic Beach, NY. Arrangements entrusted to Roma Funeral Home, Shirley.

Sam is survived by his loving sister Jo Cavallo of New York City whom he cared for very much. They shared a special bond in love and friendship. She was proud of his philanthropic work and loved her brother’s compassion for others.

A memorial mass will be offered on May 21 at 11:00 am at his beloved Saint Jude’s Church in Mastic Beach. All

are welcome to attend and bid farewell to a man who loved this community and all those who live here.

Dear Sam, you were a good guy and will be missed not only by those of us who called you ‘friend’ but by those less fortunate than ourselves in Vietnam who knew you loved them. May your memory live on always…

The Suffolk County Department of Public Works (SCDPW) is undertaking a project to replace the existing Smith Point Bridge over Narrow Bay carrying the William Floyd Parkway (C.R. 46), in the Town of Brookhaven.
