Suffolk County Announces School Bus Safety Program Recommendations from the Bus Safety Advisory Committee

Suffolk County officials announced a series of recommendations regarding the School Bus Safety Program.

The seven recommendations, from the School Bus Safety Advisory Committee, focus on continued education for motorists and enhanced safety for students.

In August 2019, New York State authorized legislation allowing the installation of stop-arm cameras on school buses in order to catch drivers who unlawfully pass a stopped school bus. The School Bus Safety Program in Suffolk is designed to protect students when they are getting on and off a school bus and deter motorists who illegally pass stopped school buses. With more than 223,000 K-12 students, there are approximately 4,500 school buses equipped with advanced safety technology that include stoparm cameras.

Last year, a young student was struck by a vehicle after exiting the school bus on a residential street. The accident, which was caught on camera, shows the school bus had its flashing red lights on and stop arm activated.

Paul Margiotta, Director, Suffolk County Traffic and Parking Violations Agency said: “Through the County’s School Bus Violation Monitoring Safety Program we are working to change reckless driver behavior, and most importantly protect children as they are getting on and off the bus.”

Jean Souliere, CEO, Bus Patrol said: “Our program fosters the best spirit of a public-private partnership focused uniquely on child safety. With distracted driving on the rise, the residents of Suffolk County — from parents and school officials to law enforcement and bus drivers — want safer roads. This change involves a cultural shift that prioritizes child safety over the risky driving habits that

have evolved over time, I am so very proud of what the Safety Committee has accomplished so far.”

Debra Hagan, President, TWU Local 252 said: “In the past it was the sole responsibility of the school bus driver to try to catch sight of a license plate of a motorist violating the law however with the implementation of the Stop Arm Camera program and the increased awareness of the law to motorists it has improved the safety for students crossing when boarding and deboarding school buses.”

John Ryan, Longwood School District Transportation Coordinator said: “At a monthly safety meeting for school bus drivers, I asked if they had seen a difference in driver behavior since the start of this program. More than three-quarters of the drivers responded that they had seen a noticeable improvement in driver behavior. Longwood averages 88 cars passing our school buses daily when loading or unloading our students, with the red stop lights flashing. Through the program’s launch, I am hopeful we can continue to see a reduction in that number. If you see a school bus with amber lights on, be prepared to stop. When the red lights are on, a child is either getting on or off the bus. Please stop - a child’s life counts on it.”

Lori Fontana, Region Director, Suffolk Region PTA said: “PTA has always advocated for the education and safety of all children and we feel that the County’s School Bus Violation Monitoring Safety Program is another positive step to protecting the children of Suffolk County.”

Prior to the implementation of the School Bus Safety Program in May of last year, the County convened the School Bus Safety Advisory Committee that was charged with providing recommendations and best practices

for the implementation of the program authorized by New York State. The Committee was tasked with providing recommendations on the development of a robust public awareness campaign to educate residents on the state laws surrounding stopping for school buses, enforcement that the public should anticipate and rollout of the new safety program.

Following the conclusion of 2021, the County reconvened the task force to examine program data, and provide any additional recommendations as the program progresses into 2022.

The advisory committee presented seven recommendations to the County, all of which the County will be adopting.

• Distribution of educational material for schools to further enhance student safety • Develop a training video for school bus operators • Launch of a New Public Service Announcement Campaign • Implementation of a data sharing program with school districts • Education event in April to highlight Operation Safe Stop at Bus Patrol’s Suffolk County Headquarters • Funding for School Districts for school safety initiatives and education of the state law As part of the recommendations put forward by the Advisory Committee, the County will distribute approximately $1.2 million in funding for schools to enhance student safety.

The public safety funding for districts will be funded with revenue generated from the County’s School Bus Safety Program and will be provided to school districts that are currently

participating in the county-wide bus safety monitoring program. The funding for student safety programs and initiatives, along with education of the state laws associated with stopping for school buses, will be distributed before the end of the school year to school districts based on population size.

Suffolk County has already installed more than 103 road signs which warn motorists about the need to stop for school buses and emphasize the presence of enforcement technology.

The County will be working with Bus Patrol to install an additional 25 signs based on a review of ticket data, and a number of requests from school districts.

The County will also work with Bus Patrol to disseminate educational materials, including animated videos, educational songs, and handouts to school districts to help better protect students as they get on and off the bus.

Consistent with educating students, the County and Bus Patrol will develop a second training video targeted towards bus drivers. The video, which will build off previous training efforts, can be used during the onboarding of new drivers, and also to reeducate current drivers on best safety practices.

The training module will contain examples and program footage for the County’s School Bus Violation Monitoring Safety Program.

As we approach the one year mark of the program’s implementation, the County will be providing approximately $125,000 in an initial round of funding to launch a new Public Service Announcement (PSA) campaign, “Don’t Try to Beat the Red.” The campaign will focus on educating motorists on school bus stopping laws and safety practices. The campaign will be designed to educate drivers on the inherent dangers of accelerating past

the amber lights to avoid having to stop for a school bus.

Additionally, in an effort to enhance student safety, a process will be developed to provide school administrators with specific violation data regarding their individual district.

The goal will be to help identify any high-risk zones, and examine if any changes can be made to school bus routes to better protect students.

Finally, in commemoration of Operation Safe Stop Day in April, which is aimed at educating the public that passing a stopped school bus is dangerous and illegal, Bus Patrol and the advisory committee will host an event to further educate the public on the School Bus Safety Program. The event will combine law enforcement agencies, school personnel, school bus contractors, traffic safety organizations, PTAs, and more.

In 2021, there were approximately 85,000 violations issued and $12 million in revenue generated, in which the County received approximately $6.6 million after administrative fees.

In May of 2021, following approval by the Suffolk County Legislature, the County officially launched the School Bus Safety Program, following a 60-day warning period for motorists.

The 60-day education period included installation of road signage, school bus bumper stickers, $500,000 towards an extensive PSA campaign and school-based outreach. The PSAs warned drivers about the dangers of illegally passing school buses and about the presence of new automated enforcement tools.

To date, more than 4,500 school buses across the County have been equipped with cutting-edge stop arm cameras to enforce school bus stopping laws and protect students.

Legislator Mazzarella Recognizes 2022 Woman of Distinction for the 3rd Legislative District

Moriches resident Kerri Rosalia has been selected by Legislator Jim Mazzarella as the local “Woman of Distinction” for his legislative district. Mazzarella recently gave Rosalia a proclamation marking the honor at a luncheon where all 18 Suffolk County Women of Distinction were recognized.

The Suffolk County Legislature’s “Woman of Distinction” honor is usually bestowed upon extraordinary women in March during Women’s History Month. As per Suffolk County Resolution 786-2002, each legislator is given an opportunity to recognize a “Woman of Distinction” within their district and honor her for all of her efforts to improve the community.

“I was proud to have the opportunity to recognize Kerri as my first Woman of Distinction honoree as Legislator of the 3rd District,” said Legislator Mazzarella.

Rosalia is a longtime resident of Moriches and works hard every day for the residents of the Mastic/Shirley community and as Director of the Mastics-Moriches-Shirley Community Library. Kerri volunteers much of her time in the community as a member of the Rotary Club of Shirley and the Mastics for the past 16 years, where she has served as a Past President. She has been Library Director for the past 15 years where she has been instrumental in modernizing the library as technology and information services evolve.

“While Kerri serves the community nobly in her role as the local Library Director, she also works outside the walls of the library to volunteer her time within the local community,” said Legislator Mazzarella.

In the aftermath of Superstorm Sandy, Rosalia served as the local Co-Chair

of NY Rising - Community Reconstruction Zone of Mastic Beach, Smith Point and Shirley. She also served as Secretary of the Library Directors Association of Suffolk County.

Kerri is also a small business owner of Buddha Beach Yoga, where she utilizes her passion of yoga to help stimulate the physical and mental health of her students. She hold both a 200 hour and a 300 hour Yoga Teacher Training Certificates and she has a true desire to help her students disconnect from the everyday demands of modern life and reconnect with the body, breath, and spirit.

“Kerri inspires others through both her work at the Mastics-Moriches-Shirley Community Library, her volunteerism, and her yoga classes, all of which seek to improve both the body and mind,” said Mazzarella. “Kerri truly encompasses everything that defines a Woman of Distinction.”

On March 24, Councilman Michael Loguercio visited Dr. Joseph Hendrie of Bellport Village to present him with a proclamation honoring him on his 97th birthday.

Dr Hendrie was born on March 18, 1925 in Janesville, Wisconsin. He served in the U.S. Army from 1943 to 1946 and went on to receive a Bachelor of Science degree in Physics in 1950 from Case Institute of Technology and later, in 1957, a Ph.D. in Physics from Columbia University.

Dr. Hendrie worked at Brookhaven National Laboratory for many years, performing research on nuclear power reactors and managing construction on various lab projects.

The proclamation from Councilman Loguercio named the 18th day of March 2022 as Dr. Joseph Hendrie Day in the Town of Brookhaven.

Protesters Rally Against Decision Speaker at SUNY Brockport Today elected officials and protesters rallied at a press conference at Patrolman Joseph Piagentini Memorial Park in Deer Park over the decision to host Jalil Muntaquim, also known as Anthony Bottom who was convicted of murdering two New York City police officers in 1971 for a speaking engagement at SUNY Brockport next month scheduled on April 6, 2022. SUNY Brockport says it will not cancel the event. He was originally going to be paid using money from the college’s “Promoting Excellence in Diversity Grant”, but the college announced it was rescinding the grant amid controversy over Muntaquim’s past and the decision to promote the event by calling Muntaquim a “political prisoner”.

Local Veterans Singled Out for Recognition and Appreciation

With war drums beating across the globe, local officials and residents took time out over the weekend to recognize and thank Suffolk’s veterans and active service members for their commitment to our country.

“We are at a very difficult time in our history,” said Assemblyman Joe DeStefano who organized a veteran’s recognition breakfast at the Henry James Jones VFW Post 2937 in Medford. “If problems around the world escalate, there’s one thing we can be sure of.

When called, our armed forces will be there to protect us.”

DeStefano was joined by office holders at all levels including Suffolk Legislators Nick Caracappa and Dominick Thorne

and Brookhaven Councilmen Neal Foley and Mike Loguercio.

“Every single member of our military, especially the veterans gathered with us today, made a commitment to our country.

They pledged to serve; they pledged to fight. Most critically, they pledged their lives,” DeStefano told the crowd. “I want to thank our local officials, and especially my staff who helped put this event together, who I know shares my commitment to take every opportunity to thank our veterans and all that they do for us.”

One of the veterans singled out at the event was Post 2937 Chaplain Walter Maresco, a Vietnam Veteran and life-long Medford resident who served in the Air Force. Maresco is also

Vice Commander of American Legion Post 1848 in Medford and a member of the Patriot Guard Riders who attend military services and make sure returning veterans are properly greeted upon their arrival home.

Also attending the recognition event were members of VFW Post 400 in Farmingville, VFW Post 8300 in East Patchogue, American Legion Posts 181 and 507 in Medford, AMVets Post 1174 in Farmingville,

Jayne-Lattin VFW Post 2913, American Legion Post 269 and AMVets Post 111 in Patchogue, St. Jude’s Knights of Columbus Council 5814 in Rocky Point, Civil Air Patrol Suffolk Cadet Squadron 10, Paws of War, and veterans residing in area nursing homes. Represented were the Army, Navy, Marines, Air Force and Coast Guard.

“There’s no way we can fully repay our veterans for what they have done,” Assemblyman DeStefano concluded. “Thank yous fall short. We are here today to show as best we can our appreciation and our gratitude and will continue to do so every chance we get. It’s wonderful that you have turned out today and I am honored to be in your presence.”

Brookhaven Highway Superintendent Awards Two $1,000 Scholarships to Graduating Seniors Brookhaven Highway Superintendent Daniel P. Losquadro recently awarded two local high school seniors with $1,000 Highway Superintendents Association scholarships.

BY KARL GROSSMAN It began a while back in connection with my moderating a panel in Suffolk, at the Jewish Center of the Hamptons, titled “Freedom from Tyranny: An American Woman’s Struggles and Triumphs to Save Soviet Jewry.”

That woman was Lillian Hoffman and the event—which included an exhibit featuring copies of the Congressional Record citing her work and successes as well as posters, letters, films and books— was organized by her daughter, Sheila Bialek of Sagaponack.

On the panel was Peter M.F. Sichel who had a vacation home in East Hampton and is a friend of Sheila and her husband, Al. Sichel has had quite a life: he has been called the “Jewish James Bond.”

He and his family escaped from Germany amid the Nazi horrors and came to New York. Sichel enlisted in the U.S. Army the day after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor.

With his fluency in German and background in Europe, he was recruited into the Office of Strategic Services, the military’s intelligence agency during the war, rising to the rank of captain. A main job was arranging for German POWs who were not Nazis to go back behind enemy lines as spies.

The Jewish James Bond -Peter M.F. Sichel

When the Central Intelligence Agency was established after the war, he became chief of the CIA base in Berlin. He remained with the CIA until 1959. Not only was he well-familiar with Germany but he has deep knowledge of Russia because of his Cold War intelligence work.

Ms. Bialek arranged for me to interview Sichel for a TV program before the panel program. After the shoot, Sichel and I chatted. He mentioned that in interrogations

by U.S. military officers and intelligence agents, members of the German General Staff said they would have overthrown Hitler if the German army had been opposed when the Nazi dictator, in his first big act of aggression, ordered 20,000 troops into the demilitarized Rhineland in 1936. He said France and Great Britain didn’t mount a challenge even though the move was in contravention of the Treaty of Versailles and even though the French had a large army. And, there was the British government’s policy of appeasement then.

What an enormously important part of history, I thought.

In recent weeks, following the invasion of Ukraine, led by another dictator, Vladimir Putin, I got back in touch with Sichel to expand

The New York Mets, with their newfound money behind them, had one of the most productive offseasons in memory. They went out and spent on offense, getting more athletic, and more talented.

They also went out and made a huge splash getting Max Scherzer, the perennial Cy Young candidate, with visions of pairing him with their own Cy Young regular Jacob deGrom. The enthusiasm led the betting market to explode for the Mets as they were installed at 10 to 1 to win the World Series.

The 10 to 1 odds represented the 2nd best odds in the National League, after the overall top dog Los Angeles Dodgers, and in front of the last World Series winner Atlanta Braves among others.

That also made the Mets 5 to 1 to win the National League and were the favorites to win their

division at + 140. Things were looking like this could be the year for the new look Mets.

Then, Friday happened.

April 1st was not an April Fool’s that Mets fans wanted, and in fact was the nightmare they had worried about. News came out that Jacob deGrom was experiencing arm pain and led to an MRI. “Here we go again” was the resounding thought that echoed through social media from Amazin’ fans everywhere. deGrom’s injury brought up the harsh reality of the star’s fragile nature, but also quickly changed the Mets 2022 outlook. New York was no longer looking at a great 1-2 punch in the rotation that rivaled any in the sport, but instead now Max Sherzer filled in for deGrom and became an ace with no #2.

The spring training of 2022 was shortened due to the lockout by major league owners as the negotiations over a new CBA dragged out. But I guess that is one of the wonders of major league baseball, because even in a shortened pre-season enough special things have emerged this spring. Watch for a new wave of young stars and hop on the bandwagon early. Let’s dive in........

• The emergence of Julio Rodriguez – there are certainly very loud whispers in the fantasy baseball community that Rodriguez is going to break camp with the Mariners. The Mariners were big spenders this off-season and it is hard to see why they wouldn’t be drawn into trying to compete with expanded playoffs.

Rodriguez will be the face of the Mariners franchise and perhaps within 3 years he will be worthy of comparison alongside Juan Soto in the National League. It’s already too late to draft Rodriguez in dynasty leagues but in mixed leagues and AL-only leagues he is a big target in drafts this spring. And this past Thursday he hit an inside the park home run as if hitting a laser with an exit velocity of 117.4 mph was

• Was Houston ever serious about retaining Carlos Correa?

There is a 5 tool prospect coming up with Houston named Jeremy Pena and you can see the momentum building as the news breaks on him. This kid is a future superstar and you don’t need to look further than Jose Altuve and Robinson Cano in seeing it. Both veterans are effusive in their praise of Pena, and when you look at video of his at bats on MLB.com you see something special at the plate. For starters, the kid is superb defensively. He is every bit the part of a standout defender. He’s also very fast, capable of stealing 30-40 bases one day.

They both stand around 6-foot-5, both have fastballs in the very high 90s, Kirby hit 100 mph

• My mixed league dynasty draft was held last night and I took a complete pass on relief pitchers as I don’t see a clear path for a lot of guys to accumulate saves. 1/3 of the closers set in place for the start of the season won’t still be their teams’ anointed closers by the 2nd week of May. Ride it out and see which managers have settled on an option at closer that they trust. I watch so many drafts get looked back at in August and the hot guesses of late March and early April. I love banking counting stats also, but here in 2022 I would rather bank stolen bases than saves since I see the saves as less projectable. A big part of fantasy baseball is always making the better gambles. Here in 2022 I feel stolen bases will be more predictable. And take a look at this rookie Oakland A 3B projected to steal 18 bases. I bet he isn’t taken prior to #300. Those are smart bets.

Failure Leads to Success

It can be painful and embarrassing. Throughout life we have been told that “failure is not an option.” For example, students are discouraged from getting failing grades, and are possibly even punished if they do.

There are many reasons why you might be feeling like a failure. Some of the factors that might play a role include: a sense of hopelessness, anxiety, depression, or low self-esteem.

If you find yourself thinking, “I am a failure,” it’s important to know that there are things you can do to feel better.

Researchers discovered that thinking about your emotionsrather than the failure itself is most helpful. Allowing yourself to feel bad can be motivating. It can help you work harder to find a better solution so that you’ll improve

next time. If you spent most of your life avoiding failure, it can feel really scary when it happens. Facing your fears, however, can be the key to reducing the discomfort.

Distracting yourself or filling the void you feel with food, drugs, or alcohol won’t heal your pain, in fact they may increase it. Instead call a friend, go for a long walk, or play with your pet. Actually a pet dog once is a get help when someone is in a depression or down and out. The dog will listen to your problems and never tell anyone, but still love you.

There’s strong evidence that shows we actually learn more from our failures than our successes. W.C. Fields said “If at first you don’t succeed, then try, try again.” Edison once said, I have not failed 10,000 times, I’ve successfully found 10,000 ways that will not work.

How Much Will This Installation Cost?

The cost of installing new electronics or accessories by a certified installer is based on several factors. Here is a rough breakdown of how an installation price is quoted.

The first consideration is where the electronics or accessories will be installed. Will they be flush-mounted in the dash?

This usually requires cutting the dash to fit the new component or fabricating a starboard or acrylic panel backing plate to cover larger existing holes or to allow for a change in location.

On the other hand, a simple bail-mount on top of the dash or in an electronics locker is a more straight-forward option.

Wherever you decide to install your component, make sure it is easy to access and view. Your installer should be able to provide some suggestions and feedback that will help you make the best decision for your situation.

The next factor is usually the most time-consuming for the installer – running the wires for the new equipment. Pulling wires for radars, transducers, antennas,

and any other equipment away from the helm can take a considerable amount of time. Just pulling wires can often take over 50% of the installation time. If you are lucky, a previous installer or owner has left a “pullstring” for future work. This alone, will save your installer time, and therefore save you money.

Networking your components will also add to the cost of the

install. Most manufacturers provide the power cable for your new electronics, but networking cables, NMEA 2000 cables, and connectors can add to the installation cost.

The final factor for the price of your job is when you want it done. In the off-season the cost of the install can usually be a little less expensive. Planning an install in advance can usually get

you the best price on the work you want done.

A certified installer will give you a written or verbal quote which is usually pretty accurate, barring any unforeseen issues with your boat. Your installer will discuss your options and consult with you before tackling any additional concerns.

with an American Boat & Yacht Council (ABYC) certified marine electrician, who understands your boat’s electrical systems.

Community Medicaid Update

My dad wants to stay at home but he needs assistance from home health aides. What are his long term care options?

For most people, staying at home is important and preferable.

The Community Medicaid program provides recipients with benefits that enable them to remain in their home. If eligible, Community Medicaid can contribute to the cost of a home care aide. An aide can assist with activities of daily living, including bathing, dressing, toileting, feeding, transferring and cooking.

Medicaid is a means tested program and applicants must meet certain asset and income requirements.

To be eligible for Community Medicaid, the applicant cannot have more than $16,800.00 in non-qualified assets. The individual can own a house, have an unlimited amount of

retirement funds (so long as taking the required monthly distribution), a car and an irrevocable pre-paid burial.

Currently, Community Medicaid does not have a lookback period. This means that the applicant can transfer assets in one month and be eligible the following month.

It is important to note that there is a pending regulation that seeks to put in place a 2.5 year lookback. This has not yet gone into effect and the current applications are approved without the lookback.

The monthly income limit for Community Medicaid is $934.00 plus a disregard of $20.00 bringing the total to $954.00. Any excess income can be directed to a Pooled Income Trust for the benefit of the Medicaid applicant

and the monies deposited into the trust used to pay the household expenses. In New York, all Pooled Income Trust are managed by charitable organizations. It is important to use the money in the Pooled Income Trust monthly.

Otherwise, when the applicant passes away, the balance goes to the charity.

Once approved for Community Medicaid, there is an evaluation performed by a nurse. The evaluation results in an award of hours for a home health aide to come to the home and assist the Medicaid recipient with activities of daily living. The amount of hours varies from a few hours per day to live-in

care, depending on the needs of the Medicaid recipient. There is a current proposal that could take effect in 2022 that changes the evaluation process. Instead of a nurse coming to the house, the evaluation will be done by a panel of medical professionals.

Community Medicaid is a program that can enable individuals to “Age in Place”.

It is important to know any changes in the regulations before applying for the benefit.

Anyone contemplating Community Medicaid should contact an attorney experienced in Medicaid planning.

Happy Trails While Trailering Part II

OK, we got you from the water to the trailer with the last column on this subject. Now, like the dog that catches the car, you say to yourself, “now what do I do?” Here it is.

Safety First – Followed by Courtesy!

Whether you are taking the boat to the marina or back to your driveway, the process is largely the same. First, once you get to the ramp area, pull over to the side and start the checkout process. By doing this away from the ramp, you don’t needlessly tie it up and engender the “ramp rage” of all the other skippers. What should you check/do?

If you just drove to the marina, walk around the boat and make sure nothing untoward happened while you were taking her over the road; if it is time to take her home, double-check any straps you put on her while on the ramp.

took ahead of you… You certainly don’t want to have your tow vehicle get stuck on the ramp or, worse, end up in the drink. But you do want to go boating.

Use some judgment.

Putting her in the water? Is the drain plug in? Now is the time! Also, disconnect the trailer lights too! No sense shorting out your tow vehicle’s electrical system or cracking a hot bulb with cold water. If it is time to take her home, be sure to get that drain plug out, stored in a safe (and easy to remember) place. Get those brake lights re-plugged in!

So, now that the engine is in the water, and you’ve checked for fuel smells/run the blower, start the engine and back the boat off the trailer; have your crewman bring her alongside dock or bulkhead by using the bow and stern painters, and wait for you.

Putting her in the water? Don’t forget to attach a line to the bow and another one to the stern – of adequate length that you can control the boat, as she floats off the trailer, from the dock.

I have seen boats float away from guys that didn’t have lines attached! Lines of this function are called “painters”.

When on the road, hopefully your engine’s lower unit was supported underway by a support strut. Putting her in the water? Remove it so you can lower the prop – but don’t lower the prop until you have her in the water!

If it is time to take her home, raise the engine before taking her away from the water and then re-install the support strut – away from the ramp.

Putting her in the water? Most importantly, give the ramp itself a quick “once-over.” Look for anything which will impede traction – algae, small stones, “pot” holes, etc. Once you start towards the ramp, you are only holding the boat on the trailer by the bow eye.

Anything which causes sharp shifting of the boat can be quite problematic! If it is time to take her home, it is likely that the ramp is already wet and thus slippery. Before you back the trailer down, be as sure as you can be that you can get back up once you add several thousand pounds of boat on the trailer.

Putting her in the water? Remove all the tie-downs and straps holding your boat to the trailer – but not the winch strap attached to the bow-eye. That is last and final thing you do prior to turning over propulsion of the boat to her own engine (more below!) If it is time to take her home, do the reverse!

As noted, head towards the ramp slowly. If you have a crewman, have him or her stand alongside the ramp itself and give you advice and guidance as you start to back the trailer down the ramp. There are as many “rules of thumb” about what happens next as there are skippers but these are, I feel,

If you still have gear to load from the tow vehicle to the boat, drive the tow vehicle off the ramp (allowing others to use it) and then transfer the extra gear.

Well, you’ve done it! the soundest.

Don’t Let Her Get Away From You!

Back the trailer down the ramp until the rear tires of the trailer (not the tow vehicle!) are mid-way in the water; The boat should, in theory, have enough water under her that she will float free with a little help (more below); so, get out now, give her the “once over”, then lower the engine’s prop/lower unit so that the prop is properly positioned for powering the boat; Release the bow-eye from the winch strap; Make sure that your crewman has those two painters in his or her hands; once that boat floats off the trailer, someone “on the hard” needs to control her or she’ll float away with the wind. (Once the “ramp-vultures” stop

laughing, they will get a boat and help you retrieve her.)

Now here is the tricky part. Before you get back in the tow vehicle, you ought to put chocks behind the rear and front tires. But, once you do, you cannot assist in the launch of the boat from the trailer by giving her a little “oomph” with the engine of the tow vehicle and your brakes. But you might not be able to get her off the trailer otherwise – unless you really back down to the point that the front tires of the trailer are well in the water – and that can be problematic when you have to drive back up a slippery ramp that you are now well down. So, what to do?

Use some judgment. Get a feel for the traction of the ramp, the angle of it versus the depth of the water at its foot and the actions that other skippers

After a day of boating, as noted above in several places, getting her back on the trailer and home is basically the reverse of the procedures above.

But be cognizant that the wind and water depth are different then when you put to sea, that the ramp may be more slippery as wet boats have been hauled up the ramp all afternoon and that the boat itself may have picked up some hitch-hikers – algae, seaweed, etc.

Use some judgment.

And don’t forget to empty the bait well. Phew, what a smell by next weekend!
