Using Tax Day as a backdrop, Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone was joined by elected officials, impacted homeowners and environmentalists in blasting the IRS for failing to follow through with a ruling it said would be issued last year declaring that grants under the County’s landmark Septic Improvement Program (SIP) should not be considered taxable income for homeowners. The County Executive called on Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen to intervene and direct the IRS to act to end the double taxation of funding Suffolk County approved by Suffolk County voters to protect and improve water quality.

“Suffolk County voters have approved the use of sales tax revenues to improve water quality, only to see those water quality funds taxed not once, but twice by the IRS,” said County Executive Bellone. “These funds are being used to address critical environmental needs in our region. The professional installation companies which actually receive the grant funds are already declaring the funds as business income and paying taxes on those funds. That’s why we are calling on the Treasury Secretary to step in and ‘axe the double tax.”

Majority Leader Chuck Schumer said: “An innovative and awardwinning environmental program, Suffolk County Executive Bellone’s Septic Improvement Grant Program is an important tool to beat back the nitrogen pollution that plagues our waterways and threatens public health and safety. I once again urge the IRS not to consider the grant funding – money which the participating homeowners themselves never touched – as personal income and urge them instead to take corrective action and provide relief to Suffolk County residents.”

The County Executive will be sending a letter to Secretary Yellen urging the Treasury Secretary to intervene to direct the IRS to issue a ruling promised last year to protect homeowners who upgrade their cesspools and septic systems from income tax liability. After indicating that action would be taken, IRS staff involved in the issue advised the County that they had been overruled

by IRS officials “up the line”, and would not act on the County’s request. Now, hundreds of Suffolk County homeowners are filing tax returns that will cost them thousands of dollars in baseless taxes for the 2021 tax year.

Suffolk County’s landmark Septic Improvement Program (SIP), established in 2017, provides grants to homeowners who choose to replace outdated cesspools and septic systems that are polluting the environment with new state-of-the-art nitrogen reducing technology. The program has made Suffolk a national leader in efforts to reduce nitrogen pollution and received a New York State Environmental Excellence award in 2021.

To make it easy for homeowners to participate, the program is designed so that homeowners themselves never receive the grant funds.

On Tax Day, Suffolk Officials, Homeowners and Environmentalists Issue Plea to IRS who pay taxes on the grant funds as business income.

In 2019, ignoring an opinion from the County’s tax counsel, the Suffolk County Comptroller issued tax forms making the grant funds taxable income for homeowners.

In January 2020, in response to a request from the Comptroller, the IRS issued a ruling declaring that the grants should be considered taxable income for homeowners, even when homeowners never actually receive the grant funds, the installers who do receive the funds are already paying income taxes on the grants.

As result of the ruling, some homeowners saw their income taxes increase by as much as $8,000, while many others chose not to participate in the SIP program due to potential tax liability. In addition, homeowners complained about other negative impacts resulting from the false inflation of income. Some homeowners reported being forced into higher tax brackets, making Social Security benefits taxable, jeopardizing senior citizen property tax exemptions, reducing college financial aid amounts for children of grant recipients, and increasing family health insurance premiums.

After an investigation revealed that the information the Comptroller had provided to the IRS in requesting a ruling was outdated, incomplete and inaccurate, the County Executive formally requested that the IRS reconsider the issue and either revoke or modify the ruling issued to the County Comptroller.

After completing a review of the more accurate information submitted by as part of the County Executive’s request for reconsideration, the IRS advised the County on June 21, 2021 that the County Executive’s efforts were successful, and that a new ruling was being drafted that would reverse the prior determination that grants funds should not be considered taxable income for homeowners. The new ruling would be retroactive, meaning that any homeowner who had already paid income taxes on a grant under the SIP program would be entitled to a refund.

“To the IRS’s credit, they essentially admitted that the initial ruling was flawed, and indicated that they would fix the problem,” said County Executive Bellone. “Needless to say, this was welcome news, since double taxation of grant income was costing homeowners thousands of dollars, leading many other homeowners to decide not to participate in the program, and diverting millions of dollars approved by voters to improve water quality.”

When several months passed without the promised ruling being issued, the County requested an updated timetable and was advised on September 24, 2021 that the IRS was going back on its statement because the IRS staff responsible for the new ruling had been overruled by others higher up in the IRS. Instead of issuing the new ruling to protect homeowners from income tax liability, on November 8, 2021, the IRS sent the County Executive a letter stating that the IRS simply would not act on the County’s request, and

Worse yet, instead of using the funds being used to improve water as approved by voters, homeowners are being forced to send millions of dollars to the federal government.

This situation is unacceptable, which is why we are calling on Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen to intervene with the IRS and direct that the letter ruling we were told was forthcoming be issued as soon as possible.”

Suffolk County Legislator Bridget Fleming said: “I stand with County Executive Steve Bellone, my colleagues on the Legislature, my partners in environmental protection, and fellow residents, as we continue to fight for a fair determination from the IRS. We have been in this struggle for three years, demanding that the IRS stand with homeowners who are helping to reverse decades of pollution by participating in our landmark Septic Improvement grant Program. The grants reduce the financial burden on homeowners, protect family budgets, and encourage participation in this critically important initiative to protect our rivers, bays and harbors.

Taxing the grants has not only unfairly added to the tax burden of individuals and families, it has had the unfortunate effect in some instances of moving taxpayers into higher tax brackets with cascading effects on family budgets. It is high time that the IRS clarify its ruling and release its stranglehold on taxpayers who are doing the right thing.”

Former NYS Assemblyman, Dean Murray has announced that he will be running on the Republican and Conservative lines in the 3rd NYS Senate District Dean Murray, an experienced state legislator with a strong record of supporting law enforcement, local businesses and delivering for our school districts, today announced his run for New York Senate as the Republican and Conservative candidate in the Third District. Murray made the announcement along with Suffolk GOP Chairman Jesse Garcia, Suffolk County Conservative Chairman Mike Torres and NYS Senate Minority Leader Rob Ortt.

Murray earned a reputation as an advocate in Albany for south shore families and business owners. As a New York State legislator, he had a record of fighting against unfunded state mandates and bureaucracy as well as working to find common sense solutions to problems. A Suffolk businessman for roughly 25 years, Murray founded the Long Island

Legislator Mazzarella’s Sewer District Update Legislator Fleming Votes for HR04 On April 14th 2022, the Suffolk County Legislature convened for a Special Meeting announced by the Presiding Officer, to authorize HR04, the discontinuance of certain parklands for public use that would lead to the establishment of wind energy transmission lines ashore Smith Point Park.

The construction of the Forge River Watershed Sewer District is well underway and crews are already out in the streets preparing for the next steps in construction. Many residents may have noticed two staging areas that will be utilized for the storing of equipment and construction materials that are located in the field directly across from the Mastic Fire Department and the other is on vacant land directly behind Mastic Seafood.

There will be much activity in these areas, as crews will be accessing these sites throughout construction.

Construction crews are in the beginning stages for sewer force main piping system installation.

Operations currently include test pitting for existing utility locations.

These operations are scheduled to continue for approximately 2 weeks, weather permitting. When working on local roads, construction crews will be following contract plans which allow for a full road closure

(except for local traffic) with traffic detoured down neighboring side streets. Within the closure, it is always the intent to leave passage for local (residents, waste management, USPS, buses, transportation, etc.) and emergency vehicle access. All closures, adjustments to closures or additional closures will be reported to the affected area 72 hours in advance.

Current contract specifies closures of these roads can occur between the hours of 7:00am and 3:30pm Monday to Friday. Please note, these timeframes and schedules are subject to change due to unforeseen conditions.

Ratepayers in Suffolk County pay up to 41% higher than the national average on their electric bills. By authorizing first steps for the alienation of certain County parklands, and allowing for their public use, this legislation allows the New York State Legislature to proceed with a process that will eventually grant access to Sunrise Wind, LLC to construct, maintain and operate a subterranean conduit and electrical distribution cable system beneath the property to provide the opportunity for wind energy production that could then be accessed by ratepayers.

Suffolk County will be able to achieve an environmentally sustainable approach to energy production by significantly increasing its renewable energy portfolio with the second largescale windfarm development in the region. The use of public lands may make the regulatory process easier than the recent development of the first commercial scale development

in the country underway off the coast of East Hampton. That project met with significant hurdles to ensure consideration and mitigation of impacts to private homeowners whose property the project abuts.

“This is a critically important moment for Suffolk County,” commented Legislator Fleming following the Special Meeting.

“As we move further into the twenty-first century, we are finally tapping into sustainable energy production that will benefit our future. This bill helps us to achieve exactly that while also protecting homeowners,” Fleming added.

This project would yield electric power generated offshore by wind turbines, benefitting over 600,000 homes with electrical power, as well as providing numerous

Bellport High School celebrated the top 67 students of the Class of 2022 during an Evening of Excellence on April 5.

Bellport High School commended the top 67 students of the Class of 2022 during a celebratory Evening of Excellence on April 5.

The seniors were honored for distinguishing themselves through their academic performance. All have maintained a grade-point average of 93 or higher.

“Excellence just does not occur by accident,” said Superintendent of Schools Dr. Joseph Giani. “It is the gradual result of always striving to do your best with high intention, sincere effort and mindful execution.”

Prior to the presentation of awards, high school Principal Erika Della Rosa presented

Rianna Raghunandan as the Class of 2022 valedictorian, Calvin Pedatella as salutatorian and Eric Ciavatta as class essayist.

They were each named for their dedication to academics.

The evening also featured the presentation of six teachers (one from each school) whom the top students collectively agreed were those who most inspired and positively influenced them during their educational journeys.

Addressing the honored teachers, Dr. Giani said, “Being recognized by these high achievers as having inspired them is a tremendous distinction. It just goes to show that your successes do not always show up in the classroom. Sometimes success

shows up when you least expect it.”

Hamptons Observatory Presents A Lecture by Dr. Avi Loeb (Harvard) About The Search for Life and Extraterrestrial Technology

HAMPTONS OBSERVATORY is honored to present a very special, free, virtual lecture by best-selling author and Director of Harvard’s Galileo Project, Dr. Avi Loeb, who will speak about the search for extraterrestrial life and evidence that supports the hypothesis that certain interstellar objects (such as ‘Oumuamua which passed through our solar system in 2017) may be technology from another civilization. We’re also honored that the highly acclaimed, award-winning science author, Dava Sobel, will introduce Dr. Loeb’s presentation. We are grateful to BookHampton for cohosting this event.

On Tuesday, April 26 2022, from 7:00 – 8:30 PM, Hamptons Observatory will present a free, virtual lecture entitled “The Galileo Project: In Search for Technological Interstellar Objects.”

The speaker, Dr. Avi Loeb, is Director of The Galileo Project at Harvard University (see biographical details below).

“Because of Dr. Loeb’s efforts and the establishment of The Galileo Project at Harvard University, we now have reason to be confident that soon we’ll have some answers.” As Dr. Loeb said, “Overall, about a quarter of our galaxy’s two hundred billion stars are orbited by planets that are habitable in the way Earth is...Given so many worlds—

fifty billion in our own galaxy!--with similar life-friendly conditions, it’s very likely that intelligent organisms have evolved elsewhere. And that’s counting only habitable planets within the Milky Way” (p. 50, Extraterrestrial).

The search for extraterrestrial life is one of the most exciting frontiers in science. Among the first tentative clues were identified close to Earth in the form of the unusual InterStellar Objects (ISOs) and Unidentified Aerial Phenomena (UAP) in the Earth’s atmosphere.

Note: While it was initially believed that ‘Oumuamua was the first ISO, in March this year, the United States Space Command confirmed that the interstellar meteor discovered in 2019

by Dr. Avi Loeb and his graduate student, Amir Siraj, was of interstellar origin; this meteor detection, dating back to 2014, predated `Oumuamua by more than three years and should be recognized as the first interstellar object ever discovered.

The recently announced Galileo Project at Harvard University ushers the new frontier of “space archaeology” in search of extraterrestrial technological relics. The goal of The Galileo Project is to bring the search for extraterrestrial technological signatures of Extraterrestrial Technological Civilizations (ETCs) from accidental or anecdotal observations and legends, to the mainstream of transparent, validated and systematic scientific research. This multidisciplinary effort consists of a UAP branch, an ISO (InterStellar Objects) branch, and a SI (Social Implications) sub-division

He was the longest serving Chair of Harvard’s Department of Astronomy and the Founding Director of Harvard’s Black Hole Initiative. He is a former member of the President’s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology.

Since 2016, he has Chaired the Breakthrough Starshot Initiative. In 2012, TIME magazine named Loeb as one of the 25 most influential people in space and, in 2020, he was selected as one of the 14 most inspiring Israelis of the last decade.

Dava Sobel, an East Hampton resident, is a high acclaimed, awardwinning author of six books, including best-sellers The Glass Universe: How the Ladies of Harvard University Took the Measure of the Stars; Longitude (on which NOVA documentary and a four-hour mini-series were based); and The Planets.

Dava was a 2000 Pulitzer finalist for her book, Galileo’s Daughter, which served as the basis for an Emmy Award winning PBS documentary. In 1992, Dava co-authored, Is Anyone Out There:

“A Triumph for Long Islanders”

BY KARL GROSSMAN “Nothing short of a triumph for Long Islanders,” declared State Assemblyman Fred W. Thiele, Jr. about the inclusion in the new state budget of creation of a Legislative Commission on the Future of the Long Island Power Authority to perform a study that could lead to LIPA becoming a fully public utility.

The budget for the state’s 20222023 fiscal year, approved two weeks ago by the state legislature and promptly signed by Governor Kathy Hochul, establishes an eightmember panel to do the study which could lead to LIPA being “municipalized.”

Its members will be appointed by the legislative leaders of both parties in both the State Assembly and State Senate. Guiding and assisting the commission will be an advisory committee of area “stakeholders”—a wide variety including representatives of business, labor, local governments, environmental groups, Native American tribes, educators and those involved in social justice issues.

The commission’s work can “serve as a path toward fully realizing what LIPA should have always been: a public power authority responsible to the customers it serves,” said Thiele of Sag Harbor, the prime sponsor in the Assembly for establishing the commission.

Governor Hochul’s working with Thiele, an Independent and previously a Republican, and Gaughran, a Democrat, in creation of the commission and its study mission was a far contrast from the behavior of her predecessor as governor, Andrew Cuomo.

It was Cuomo who foisted a New Jersey-based utility, PSEG, onto Long Island as the most recent company running the Long Island electric grid for LIPA. It replaced National Grid which Cuomo decried for its performance during

Superstorm Sandy in 2012.

There will be opposition no doubt involving PSEG to what could now happen.

The utility from Newark has prized its expansion on to Long Island.

The original vision decades ago by those who crusaded for founding LIPA was for it to operate the Long Island electric grid—and also to run democratically with members of its board elected by Long Islanders.

A model was the Sacramento Municipal Utility District which then and now operates the electric grid in a large chunk of California

and has an elected board. But Andrew Cuomo’s father, former Governor Mario Cuomo, cancelled having elections for LIPA board members, and his successor, George Pataki, formalized elimination of elections and instead appointments mostly by the governor and also legislative leaders.

The Legislative Commission that will be set up will now consider “the method of governance” of LIPA. A return to the concept of democratic governance could be proposed.

Another original vision for LIPA was for it to have a commitment to safe, renewable, green energy.

That came in the wake of the now defunct Long Island Lighting Company seeking to build seven to eleven nuclear power plants on Long Island. Shoreham was the first to be completed but was shut down and decommissioned as a nuclear facility in the face of public and governmental opposition and the formation of LIPA to replace LILCO.

It’s Playoff Time For the Nets

For the Brooklyn Nets their mindset now is to forget about the regular season with its injuries, Covid issues, problems and bad play. It’s all behind the Brooklyn Nets now and the playoffs are all they care about. Whether it was the James Harden trade disruption, Kyrie Irving and his vaccine stance, Kevin Durant’s physical ailments, or the Ben Simmons talk, it was a topsy turvy season, but none of it matters now.

When you are as talented as the Brooklyn Nets, the talent stands apart from all of the other noise. The line makers around the country agree with this as even before the play-in game against the Cleveland Cavaliers, Brooklyn was listed as the #2 team in the Eastern Conference to win the Championship and the #3 overall team in the NBA at +650, just behind Milwaukee

at +550 and Phoenix at +300.

The Nets looked the part of a champion down the stretch of the season winning 12 of their final 17 regular season games, and then winning in the first round of the play-in tournament to secure their spot in the playoffs. The rest of the league should be terrified. Brooklyn is suddenly the team we all imagined them to be when Durant and company decided to form a super team. A healthy KD averaged nearly 30 points per game, and we know how well he can up his game in the playoffs. Kyrie is back and he remains one of the best shot makers in NBA history and his talent level has shown with his 27 points per game as well. Durant or Irvin can completely take over a game at any given time and they showed it this season with Durant scoring 55 in a game and Kyrie

putting up 60.

Brooklyn is very dangerous and we should all be optimistic about this team because of their talent but there are some holes in their game that need to be addressed. The Nets defense

will be their undoing if it’s not fixed, and fixed quickly.

The Nets’ defense had a nice start to the year but since then they have fallen hard and now ranks 20th in the NBA with a 112.3 defensive rating. That won’t get it done, unless they do get insane

efforts from Durant and Kyrie, but with this talent on display, we can’t count that out. The Nets may have had a rough regular season, but when has the regular season ever mattered? It’s playoff time!

A report of separation is generally issued when a service member performs active duty for at least 90 consecutive days of active duty training. The Report of Separation contains information normally needed to verify military service for benefits, retirement, employment, and membership in veteran’s organizations.

That form is a DD-214, and every veteran should not only have copies of it but know how useful it is.

The DD-214 is required to claim certain military benefits, college education discounts, veterans preference in hiring, VA Loans, medical benefits, association membership, a veteran’s funeral benefit, school enrollment, and many other things. In some cases, vets might have an equivalent form that provides the same

information as the DD214.

This is especially true for service members who were discharged before 1950; even after 1950, other forms were in circulation that detailed discharge status and military service, such as the War Department Adjutant General Office Form 53-55.

In some cases, you might need to expedite a copy of the form to receive the benefits in time, though it’s still possible you could wait six to eight weeks. One way around the issue is to work with your provider to schedule a memorial service

following a cremation or burial. Memorial services are less time sensitive, allowing families to include appropriate Vet-related benefits in a service after the form is received. Even if you prefer a private cemetery you may still be eligible for the VA to supply the headstone.

While you are fully

entitled to the GI Bill from going back to school, to buying a home, and veteran medical care, the DD-214 is required.

When renewing your driver’s license, show them your DD-214 and they will add “Veteran” on your license.

If you do not have your DD-214 there are several different ways to apply for a copy. To obtain a free copy on your computer request a copy of standard form 180. The form has three pages; the first page is the instruction page on how to fill out the form. The second page is the form, and the last page tells who to send the form to.

You can hire someone else to apply for your DD214, but beware that they will be simply using the SF180 and charging you for a service you can do for free.

A marine radio is an essential piece of equipment on all boats. They are the most effective means of communication in an emergency situation and could make the difference between rescue and tragedy. The DSC button (digital selective calling) is a standard for transmitting digital distress alerts to the Coast Guard. For the DSC to function, you must apply for an MMSI number which is free and can be obtained for SeaTow or BoatUS websites.

I often receive questions as to why their VHF radios are not receiving responses from other radios. A VHF uses line-of-sight communication. This means your antenna sends out a signal to a receiving antenna.

The receiving antenna must be at the same elevation or higher than the sending antenna and generally cannot travel beyond the horizon. When you are at the dock and are trying to call someone out on the water, chances are they won’t hear you.

The easiest way to extend your range is to elevate your antenna as high as practical.

A 4-foot antenna will not have the range of an 8-foot antenna. An antenna’s db rating (antenna gain) increases the transmitting power but also decreases transmission above and below the antenna. A lower db antenna would function well in calmer waters, but when offshore and at distance, a higher

db antenna will perform much better. You can see the different db ratings’ patterns in the included illustration.

Enter USCG station identity 003669999 into radio’s DSC memory 2.) Next select Test Call from the menu 3.) Select the USCG # you entered 4.) Transmit Call The radio display should indicate when the test call is acknowledged and display the station’s nine-digit identity.

Medicaid Changes

Is there a change on the horizon that will allow me to keep more assets and income and still enroll in Medicaid for long term care?

Yes, changes are coming to increase the amount of assets and income Medicaid recipients can have while maintaining eligibility for services. The New York State Fiscal Year 2023 budget has been signed into legislation, expanding the ability for New Yorkers to qualify for Medicaid if they are 65+ years old, blind or disabled.

Under the current rules, a Community Medicaid recipient is allowed $934 of income per month (plus an additional $20 for being aged, blind or disabled) and no more than $16,800 in countable assets. For couples where both are enrolling in the Medicaid program, the income level is $1,367 and the asset level is $24,600.

Income for this purpose can include Social Security, pension, retirement account distributions, and income payable from a trust. While these are the most common sources of income, it is not an exhaustive list.

Countable assets can include, but are not limited to, checking and savings, CDs, brokerage accounts, individual stocks, non-qualified annuities, cash surrender value of life insurance, and residences other than primary. Tax-deferred retirement accounts that are in payout status are not counted as assets for eligibility purposes.

But change is coming!

With the new law, effective January 1, 2023, the allowable amounts for income and assets are increasing. The income amount for Community

Medicaid recipients will be raised from 100% to 138% of the Federal Poverty Level, so that an individual who is aged, blind or disabled will be able to have $1,563 in monthly income, $2,106 for couples.

An individual will be allowed $28,134 in assets, while couples

will be allowed $37,908. These are estimates based on 2022 limits. The final numbers should be released in December 2022.

There are still opportunities to engage in proper planning to apply for services even if your assets and income are above

these levels. As an example, New York State allows for the protection of excess income in a pooled income trust. This is a mechanism that allows the Medicaid recipient to enroll in services, while maintaining the use of their income during their lifetime to pay other household expenses.

The FY 2023 Budget took other measures to support the Community Medicaid program.

Legislation was passed to raise the minimum wage and provide bonuses for home care aides. The hope is that these incentives will increase the availability of caregivers in the community.

That, with the expansion of the income and asset limits, is intended to increase the access that New Yorkers will have to Community Medicaid services.

We all know how important it is to encourage our children to read, but once they are reading independently, it can be difficult to keep them interested when there are so many other distractions in the modern world. Sometimes, getting a child engaged takes a little something extra to spark them into wanting to read for themselves.

A really great motivator for young readers is our program “Tail Waggin’ and Readin’ Fun”, which brings certified therapy dogs to the library children’s department.

Children who come to see the reading dogs are given a fifteenminute time slot to snuggle up and read to the gentle pups. This has been a really popular program in the past and the library is thrilled have it back. “Tail-waggin’ and Readin’ Fun” allows kids to practice reading skills and reading aloud to a creature who never corrects their reading or judges them if they read slowly. Positive interactions like that can also lead into pursuing their curiosity through reading. Are there fiction stories about dogs they

might like? Do they want to learn about dog breeds or therapy dogs?

Ask a librarian for help finding a book, any time. This program does not require registration, just stop in between 4:30 and 6:00 any Tuesday in February for a visit with our furry friends.

Our other library creatures can spark curiosity that can turn into reading as well. We also have two delightful Northern Leopard Frogs as guests, and on display next to them are some books ready to be checked out. There are other non-fiction as well as fiction books about frogs for all ages just waiting to be discovered. What questions might your child have that can be answered in a book?

We’ve had a few warm days in here. And the traditional start o’ summer- Memorial Day – is but a few weeks away. And thus Summer is close aboard. However, even then the water will be cold for several weeks and you need to be aware of how dangerous that can be – if you aren’t prepared and savvy. This column is about that.

Warm Air, Cold Water = Risks!

I like a warm day, early in the season, as much as the next mariner. But the water itself is just about as deadly as it is in the deep of winter. Remember that water takes heat from your body 25x’s faster than air of the same temperature.

You can impress this on your young boaters – and yourself – quite easily.

Lay out a glass of water before you turn in one night. It will be room temperature by the morning. Now take two ice cubes from the freezer.

Put one on a dry napkin next to the room-temperature glass on water.

Drop the second ice cube into the glass. Now, in theory, they are both exposed to the same temperature – room temperature. But when the ice cube on the napkin starts to show a damp line around itself, the ice cube in the glass will have melted away. This is why hypothermia is so insidious and dangerous.

If you don’t have cold-water life jacket gear, you’re playing Russian Roulette with your own life.

BY DOMINICK FORTE At the beginning of creation, there came about a cataclysmic battle in heaven. God had created the angels with free will but he created them fallible, that is able to err. The Almighty Creator was uncomfortable with the idea that his creations could sin and probably would, if given the opportunity. So, he strengthened many of them in their pursuit of goodness with an infusion of grace. In the opinion of St. Augustine, a 5th century bishop from northern Africa, scholar, and major theologian of the Church, this confirmation gave them a profound understanding of the workings of the cosmos and their unique place in it.

Then God created a second group but withheld his infusion of grace and so gave them the opportunity to transgress from His will. True to his suspicions they embraced sin with enthusiasm. He had revealed to them the existence of His Son whom He ordered them to adore and worship in the same way that they did Him. One archangel could not accept this Divine dictate. In a supreme act of pride,

the Archangel Lucifer defied the Creator, thus committing the first sin. He led a revolt against God in heaven taking with him one third of all the angels. This is reported in Chapter 12 of the Book of Revelation with Lucifer, aka Satan, depicted allegorically as a huge red dragon dragging down from the heavens with its tail one third of all the stars, the stars symbolizing angels.

As a result, a war broke out between Satan’s forces pitted against those loyal to God headed up by the Archangel Michael. Michael’s troops prevailed and managed to cast out of heaven the devil and his loyalists, who became known as the fallen angels.

This great defeat is considered a humiliating debacle for the devil instilling in him an obsessive vengeance against God. He resolved to destroy God’s human creatures by leading them astray from their loving bond with Him. Theologians, looking to the book Revelation, assure us that there will be a rematch and that

the final conflict will eventually be an overwhelming victory for the forces of good. Michael will once again lead God’s army against a renewed onslaught

by Satan’s demonic forces. The devil’s hoards will still try the impossible rather than turn toward the Light of God. This confirms that in their pride they

With the continuous victories of good over evil, Michael had replaced the disgraced Lucifer as the archangel closest to God. In fact, Michael’s name translates into “he who is as God.” There is a prayer directed to Michael seeking his intercession.

May God rebuke him we humbly pray, and do thou, O Prince of the Heavenly Host, by the power of God, cast into hell Satan and all the evil spirits who prowl the earth seeking the ruin of souls.”
