Sheriff’s Office Donates Nearly 450 Pieces of Body Armor to Ukraine

On Monday, March 7, 2022, Suffolk County Sheriff Errol D. Toulon, Jr. joined with Helene Buchin, wife of Dr. David Buchin, Coordinator of the Long Island-Ukraine Emergency Response Drive, to announce the donation of nearly 450 pieces of bulletproof body armor from

For the lesser charge, Caracappa was granted an “Adjournment in Contemplation of Dismissal (ACOD)”. Under State Law, Caracappa will be mandated by local statute to wait 12 months to receive the ACOD.

On the dismissal, Brookhaven Town and Suffolk County Republican Chairman Jesse Garcia stated, “I am pleased to hear that, as we always expected, Legislator Nick Caracappa has been cleared of all charges by the independent special prosecutor.

Caracappa also agreed to a requested order of protection keeping him away from his exwife’s place of employment for 12 months while awaiting the ACOD of the lesser charge. An independent special prosecutor from the Nassau County District Attorney’s Office was assigned to Caracappa’s case after newly elected Suffolk District Attorney Ray Tierney recused himself after campaigning side by side with Caracappa during this past election cycle, which both Tierney

I want to also thank my family, friends and community members who never wavered from their support and belief in me and my innocence. Particularly to my daughters, who have stood by me with their love and support since day one. Though I am sad that they too had to endure this very difficult and highly personal matter that was anything but personal, I’m so very happy for their vindication as well as mine.

I am truly blessed to have such amazing people in my life, and I’m looking forward to continuing my role as Dad and serving the great residents of the 4th Legislative District and throughout Suffolk County.”

Nick Caracappa Offers Interactive Demonstration of the Suffolk Accessible Bus System in Response to Rider Challenges

At the February 28, 2022 meeting of the Public Works, Transportation Energy Committee, Suffolk County Legislator and Committee Chair Nick Caracappa hosted a viewing and inspection of the SCAT 2100 Series County Bus, which was parked in the Legislative Auditorium parking lot.

Addressing the many concerns expressed by riders, participants (consisting of actual riders and some of Legislator Caracappa’s colleagues on the Legislature) who wore blindfolds, or used walkers or services animals were asked to board the bus, simulating actual rider procedure. Also present were members of SILO, Suffolk Independent Living Organization, who advocate for people with special needs.

Mastic Beach native participates in Ice Exercise 2022 in the Arctic Ocean

By Rick Burke, Navy Office of Community Outreach A Mastic Beach, New York, native, is serving with Naval Mobile Construction Battalion (NMCB) 11 supporting Ice Exercise (ICEX) 2022 in the Arctic Ocean.

ICEX 2022 is a three-week exercise designed to research, test and evaluate operational capabilities in the Arctic region.

Petty Officer 3rd Class Cheyenne Irizarry joined the Navy three years ago to gain experiences and to see what the world has to offer.

Irizarry, a 2017 William Floyd High School graduate, has taken the skills learned from education and those learned in Mastic Beach to become the sailor they are today.

“Growing up in my hometown has showed me that you have to work hard to get the things you want, and working harder to keep those things,” said Irizarry.

Irizarry serves as a construction electrician.

“My favorite part of my job, is being a part of the Seabees and traveling around the world,” said Irizarry.

According to Navy officials, U.S. Navy, Army,

“My greatest acomplishment in the Navy, is being awarded CNE Det Mast Blue Jacket of the Quarter,” said Irizarry. “I am also proud of growing both professionally and personally.”

As a member of the U.S. Navy, Irizarry, as well as other sailors, know they are part of a service tradition providing unforgettable experiences through leadership development, world affairs and humanitarian assistance.

Their efforts will have a lasting effect around the globe for generations of sailors who will follow.

“Serving in the Navy means alot to me,” added Irizarry. “It also gives me the opportunity to see new cultures and places around the world.”

WFHS Varsity Cheerleading Team Building for the Future The varsity cheerleading team’s winter season ended on a high note! This group of student-athletes who began the year as individuals worked hard to become a cohesive unit functioning together as one. The Colonials showed a marked improvement going from last place in early-season competitions to concluding their final two with consecutive secondplace finishes.

The Colonials’ commitment to improving was evident as they put in the hard work and effort including Monday through Friday practices as well as cheering for the varsity football games in the fall and boys’ varsity basketball games in the winter, as well as competitions on Saturdays.

“For practice we made sure to hit all areas of our

routines including stunting, pyramids, tumbling, jumps, motions and dance,” said head coach Allison Iovino.

“We also worked on conditioning for 30 minutes at least three practices a week to work on our endurance.”

From their first competition to their last, the Colonials increased their overall competition score by nearly 15 points. “I know that I was hard on them and added many practices that were not originally scheduled or kept them for a three-hour practice instead of two. We did this to perfect our routine,” added Coach Iovino.

Coach Iovino expressed her gratitude to all the parents and guardians for their continued support throughout the season.

“They trusted me with their children and that means the world to me.” She also shared how having an impact on their performance, as well as the students personally, meant so much to her.

“The 2021-2022 varsity cheerleading team will be one that is remembered forever!” she said.

Cheerleading team members include Captains Claudia Schmidt and Jennifer Rivera, and team

Laura Lorenzo is Ms. NY Senior America

Laura J. Lorenzo proudly wears the banner of Ms. New York Senior America 2021 and as National Women’s Month is celebrated in March, she talked with South Shore Press about her responsibilities associated with the title and how she, in turn, is learning from the job.

Laura calls Mastic Beach her hometown. She grew up in Valley Stream, raised her daughter, now age 26, as a single mom, and sent her to private school at St. John’s. Laura is multi talented as evidenced by jobs she holds singing at restaurants, weddings, private parties, and the National Anthem at events where local elected officials speak. Add to that her responsibilities at Raymour & Flanigan, and an assisted living center, and this reporter asked how Laura found the time and energy to compete in, and ultimately win the title of Ms. New York Senior America?

She became interested in the pageant after one of her friends became involved, but at age 57, Laura was too young to enter, with the minimum age being 60. “Then at age 60, I entered the pageant and was runner up two times before winning,” she explained. Laura would subsequently enter the Ms. National Senior America where she came in a respectable second.

“This year the national pageant

was completely virtual which made it very difficult because there’s a lot of work; we had to get our own filmmakers, videographers, and you had to stage where you were going to walk in your gown,

Laura continued, “is to give us the chance to show our inner beauty and talents. I met a lot of terrific women from many different walks of life, cultures, religions, jobs~all of whom accomplished so much in their lives.” Laura plans to attend the National Ms. Senior USA Competition to support the contestants and to participate in the wide array of activities associated with the event.

Laura shared her philosophy with judges during her pageant interview: “Because this year was so tumultuous, my philosophy is not the cards you were dealt, but how you play your hand,” she explained.

The whole pageant experience has been a rewarding one, as Laura explains: “The pageant is more like a sisterhood than a competition,” she says of the national pageant organization. “The whole point of the Ms. Senior America,”

Laura will hand over her New York State crown to the new Ms. New York Senior America when the pageant is held April 30th at the Southward Ho Country Club at 601 Montauk Highway in Bay Shore. “I’m not a pageant girl,” the winner ironically told South Shore Press. “But I found that once I got involved,” Laura said, “I saw how the women are so supportive to one another and you realize that you have so much to offer, and you have a better sense of self and respect for yourself and others.”

During the meeting, the Councilman presented a Certificate of Congratulations to club president Lorraine Mazza Kuehn, who recently was the recipient of the Paul Harris Fellowship award. The award acknowledges individuals who contribute, or who have contributions made in their name, of $1,000 to the Rotary Foundation. Rotary established the award in 1957 to encourage and show appreciation for substantial contributions to what was then the Foundation’s only program, Rotary Foundation Fellowships for Advanced Study, the precursor to Ambassadorial Scholarships.

Tesla Science Center at Wardenclyffe to Become a Reality

BY KARL GROSSMAN In coming days, structures which were added to Nikola Tesla’s laboratory in Shoreham will be taken down in what is to be a return of the historic laboratory to “its original state when Tesla worked there,” says Jane Alcorn.

“Within the next two years,” Alcorn said, her hope is that the laboratory is restored to what it was when Tesla was there.

Alcorn, founder of the project to create a Tesla science center and museum at what was his laboratory, said there are to be exhibits including “replicas of Tesla’s equipment” in the elegant red brick building designed by Tesla’s friend, famed architect Stanford White.

And in Suffolk County, the Tesla Science Center at Wardenclyffe will become a reality.

Nikola Tesla was a genius inventor.

These days most people when they hear the word Tesla, probably think of the Tesla car—which, indeed, Elon Musk named after him.

But, as Princeton University Press, which published Tesla, Inventor of the Electrical Age, states: “Nikola Tesla was a major contributor to the electrical

revolution that transformed daily life at the turn of the twentieth century. His inventions, patents, and theoretical work formed the basis of modern AC electricity, and contributed to radio and television.” It is authored by Dr. W. Bernard Carlson, professor of science, technology, and society at the University of Virginia.

The world would adopt alternating current or AC, although Thomas Edison, whom Tesla, of Serbian background, worked for after he came to the U.S., pushed for direct current or DC. There were conflicts between the two over this.

And Tesla was responsible for far more inventions including hydroelectric power, forms of remote control and the bladeless turbine. As for radio. Guglielmo Marconi is generally credited with originating radio, but the U.S. Supreme Court, after Tesla’s death in 1943, determined that much of Marconi’s work was based on 17 Tesla patents.

Tesla went to Shoreham to pursue his vision of providing wireless electricity—for free—to people around the world. “Tesla was convinced that he could set up stationary waves in the Earth and transmit power and messages,”

Why Shoreham? Tesla “was approached by James S. Warden, a lawyer and banker from Ohio who had relocated to Suffolk County,” bought farmland and “christened his property Wardenclyffe.” He offered Tesla land which is just to the north of Route 25A in Shoreham.

In addition to the laboratory, a giant tower—187 feet tall— visible from Connecticut, was built. Below the tower a deep “ground connection” was dug. “In many ways, Wardenclyffe was the fulfillment of Tesla’s dreams.

For nearly a decade he had been

planning in his imagination a system for broadcasting power around the world, and now that system was taking shape in the real world,” writes Swanson. But then Morgan pulled out of the undertaking and Tesla faced huge financial problems. The tower was demolished in 1917.

He strongly opposed centralized coal-fired power stations that spewed carbon dioxide into the air that humans breathed,” wrote Stephen Dark in 2020 on the Australia-based website The Fifth Estate. “Tesla was so far ahead of his time.”

In a league that sports such great offensive names as Connor McDavid, Auston Matthews, and Leon Draisaitl it’s almost unthinkable that someone outside of a top scorer can possibly be an MVP. Huberdeau, Gaudreau and others also have a claim for the best player in the sport. But, when we are talking about “most valuable player” to their team how can we overlook the Rangers netminder?

The New York Rangers are battling for first place, to the surprise of many. Sure, they have some weapons like the Bread Man and Fox, but this is primarily because of Igor Shesterkin. Can he be the lead dog for the Hart Trophy? It might seem far fetched but there is plenty to back it up. Besides leading the

upstart Rangers and being the clear most valuable for his team, it goes deeper than that. Shesterkin has a .940 SP to go along with a 1.98 goals against average. Those are just outstanding numbers.

The problem is the spotlight is on scoring, as it always has been. The last goalie to win the trophy was Carey Price back in 2015. He ended the season with very similar numbers to what Igor is putting up right now. He ended with a 1.96 GAA and a .933 SP. Price had to beat out Erik Karlsson and Patrick Kane for the honors. Both of which had just 106 points.

To put that in perspective Huberdeau, McDavid and Draisaitl are all on pace for 120 points. Matthews has missed time and might score 60 himself.

Fantasy baseball in 2022 won’t start on time. The owners have cancelled the first two series of the 2022 season as a collective bargaining agreement could not be worked out. Thus far, the delay seems to be an event which will delay us just one week but this could rapidly expand and get longer. There is no way for a fantasy sports player to know how long this delay will last, so why bother? There are plenty of other things to do which will keep you fantasy sports players active, so let’s dive into the possibilities.

The NFL combines were held this past week and there was a lot of interesting news that came out of that. Of particular note, the wide receivers had lethal times in their 40 yard dashes and this is sizing up as an amazing draft for wide receivers. Three (3) names you need to learn quickly are North Dakota State’s Christian Watson, Western Michigan’s Sky Moore and Memphis’s Calvin Austin III. The #1 WR expected to go off the board in the draft. Per ESPN’s Stats & Information research the most wide receivers with sub 4.4 times in the 40 yard dash was this

The one argument you can make for Igor winning the MVP is this. Yes, the league is much more of an offensive league. But, that also shows how much more valuable a great goalie is. We regularly

see games fly over 6 goals and offenses, and offensive stars are greater now than ever. Which makes what Shesterkin is doing even that much more impressive. He is outperforming every goalie

in the league, his team is in first place, and while maybe prolific offense still moves the needle, the league show takes notice of how valuable Igor really is. I’d go as far to say he is “the most valuable”.

It’s been 17 years since their last College World Series title, but they are the #1 ranked team in college baseball this year. Stanford and Oklahoma State are also very good teams in the running to be there at the College World Series finals.

A player who has received huge press in the last two weeks is Tennessee pitcher Ben Joyce. A junior righthander who had previous Tommy John surgery. He has done an amazing job in his rehab, and has been clocked as high as 103.5 mph this spring. That is a very rare and surprising revelation who was receiving no ink this February as a potential collegiate standout for this upcoming summer baseball draft. Now elite velocity is not necessarily tied to all pitching

But only three pitches in the 2021 season were thrown as hard as 103 mph. Two of them were thrown by Aroldis Chapman of the NY Yankees and Jordan Hicks of the St. Louis Cardinals threw one pitch that hard. Now Hicks made it back healthy in 2021 from Tommy John surgery. But he is not projected to be the St. Louis closer at least not right away. It was

not a good sign that he developed a forearm injury late in September.

There is also talk of transitioning him back into the starting rotation in 2022.

So you should proceed with caution with Ben Joyce. Still, I plan to stream his appearances with the 17th ranked Tennessee Volunteers this year. It should be

Women Who Served in the Military Kelley who was the first woman to command a U.S. military vessel – specifically, the 95-foot patrol boat USCC Cape Newagen on April 15, 1997. Dominiquen Saavedra, a Navy Chief Culinary Specialist was the first female enlisted sailor to earn her submarine qualification insignia, or “dolphins.” There are many other women who first served in different areas of our military that also should be recognized.

Since March is labeled Woman’s History Month, we remember those who served in the military..

During World War I some 14,000 women served. More than 3,000 served as Army nurses deployed to serve at hospitals in France near the front lines. Those women who remained stateside served as “yeomanettes” with the Navy.

Others enlisted to serve the Army Signal Corps to serving as telephone and switchboard operators.

During World War II over 350,000 women enlisted to fill all the branches of the military in uniform. Thousands served as nurses both in Europe and the Pacific areas in addition to state side hospitals. Some of them serving in the Pacific campaign were captured and became POWs. There were the Women’s Army Corps (WAC), the Women’s Air Force Service Pilots (WASP), Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service (WAVES), the Marine Corps Women’s Reserve and the Coast Guard Women’s Reserve (SPAR).

President Harry Truman signed the Women’s Armed Services Integration Act on July 8, 1948, allowing women to serve as permanent, regular members of the U.S. Armed Services. Immediately after it was signed Ester Blake enlisted in the Air Force. President Lynden Johnson signed Public

Law 90-130 opening promotions for women to general and flag ranks. The law also removes the 2% restriction on the number of women serving on active duty. We need to recognize General Loretta Reynolds who was the first woman to command the Marine Corps’ historic training ground at Parris

Island, S.C. She is also the first female Marine to command units in a battle zone. Also recognize Capt Amy Bauernschmidt the skipper of the nuclear-powered aircraft carrier the USS Abraham Lincoln deployed to the western Pacific on January 3rd. We also recognise Coast Guard Lt. Beverly

In 1993, the Department of Defense opened combat aviation jobs to women. In 1994, Defense Secretary Les Aspin officially rescinded the “risk rule”, which excluded women from combat units or missions that risk exposure to direct combat, hostile fire or capture. That was lifted by Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta in 2013 making women eligible to serve in frontline combat and complete combat operations.

As the public recognizes Women’s History Month, let us remind others of those Women who served with us and those that are still serving.

Do You Need a Bilge Pump?

Bilge pumps are essential for any boat. Boat US states that 80% of insurance claims were from boats that sank at the dock.

So where is the water coming from? About 50% of sinkings were from water entering through leaking underwater fittings. This includes faulty seacocks, raw water intake hose failures, stuffing boxes, leaking outdrives, and leaking transducers. 30% are caused by rainwater and clogged scuppers.

The remaining cases are caused by electrical or bilge pump failure, and/or dead batteries.

Boaters who don’t regularly check their bilges are unaware of potential problems because the auto bilge pump has dutifully kept the bilges dry. It’s not until the pump fails or the batteries die that the cause is (hopefully) diagnosed.

When a boat is underway, it has water entering from above, plus wind and waves that can add even more water to the bilge, especially if the boat’s drains or scuppers are blocked.

All boats should add a high water alarm. This alarm at the helm will let you know that water has risen beyond an acceptable level and that your bilge pump has failed or cannot keep up with the water flowing in.

Having more than one bilge pump, connected for different batteries, provides some additional peace of mind. When it comes to pumps, more is always better. Here’s a breakdown of the minimum recommendations for recreational boats: Up to 18’ 18-22’ 22-26’ 26-30’ 30-35’ 35-40’ 40-45’

300-500 GPH (Gallons per hour) 450-700 700-1,200 800-1,200 1,000-1,600 1,600-2,200 2,000-4,000

The gallons per hour can be divided among multiple pumps, located in different parts of the bilge, i.e. forward, mid, aft.

Important Tips:

1.) Visit your boat regularly to ensure that batteries are fully charged and that bilge pumps and auto switch are working.

2.) Check that your drains and scuppers are not clogged.

3.) Ensure that hoses are in good condition, and check connections at least twice per season.

4.) Prior to launch, check that all thru-hulls are in good condition and not loose.

Non-Fungible Tokens in Your Estate Plan

Q: Who gets my NFT when I pass away?

A l t h o u g h cr y ptocur rencies like bitcoin have gone mainstream, non-fungible tokens (NFTs) were relatively unknown until 2021.

You may have heard about “Bored Apes”, “Crypto Kitties” or that artist Beeple sold an NFT for $69 million.

If you do not exactly understand what an NFT is, you are not alone.

Unlike cash, which is interchangeable, non-fungible items are one of a kind. An NFT is a unique digital asset built on a blockchain that comes with the right to use it. An NFT can be a photograph, animation, graphic image, video, meme, tweet, or anything digital. The value of the NFT lies in its uniqueness, which is attributable to its traceability on the blockchain.

The easiest to understand use of NFTs is when they represent realworld assets or serve as certificates of authenticity. For example, Nike distributing an NFT with

every sneaker to protect against counterfeiting. Owning a multimillion dollar digitally generated avatar is a bit harder to grasp. But 1 out of 10 Americans invested in NFTs in 2021, so even if the appeal escapes you, the concept of scarcity should be familiar.

What to do if your grandson gifts you an NFT for Christmas or grandma sends an NFT as a birthday present? Keep the password safe! NFTs reside in “digital” wallets, which are stored on a computer, flash drive, or an app on your phone. You must have the private key or seed phrase (at least 12 unrelated words) to access the wallet. This private phrase is the only way to retrieve the NFT.

Calling attention to it ensures that the Executor at least knows of its existence. Do not include the password of course, since a Will becomes public after probate!

AIS and the Private Boater

In the “technology gamesmanship” between the Have’s and the Have Not’s, each time 2 mariners (or golfers, tennis aficionados or “Internuts”) get together, inevitably the “tech question du jour” comes up.

In our father’s days, it was “did you get a VHF radio yet?” or perhaps a “What do you think about LORAN?” In our younger days, it was, “hey, have you put GPS aboard yet? I have and it is faaaaanntastic!” As the price of hardware came down, we even got into discussion about radar, which for most people was considered only a tool for the military and commercial mariners. But, for the same reason (lowering costs), now AIS is part of the tech jargon. This column is about that.

AIS is what?

AIS is the Automatic Identification System, operated by the US Coast Guard here in the United States.

The International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) “requires AIS to be fitted aboard international voyaging ships with gross tonnage of 300 or more tons, and all passenger ships regardless of size.” It is estimated that more than 40,000 ships currently carry AIS class A equipment.

Clearly, by the prior description, it is and has been intended for the “big boys.” What does it do? It links all

AIS-equipped vessels together via satellite/GPS technology.

Well, doesn’t my radio do that essentially? Not unless you or the opposing skipper see each other and decide to open up a channel. AIS broadcasts continuously. And it broadcasts plenty – directly on to your radar screen, or chart plotter or GPS screen. It will tell you, for any AIS-equipped ship within VHFradio range, its speed and heading, which is critical in understanding if there is a threat of collision. It will also tell you when and where it will happen if both of you maintain your present course and speed (that’s when the “CPA” , i.e., Closest Point of Approach, is zero.)

But any good radar system these days will give you that data. True. If the radar sees the opposing vessel, it can. While many objects can block a radar return, VHF goes in a straight line, to infinity essentially, and won’t be (completely) blocked by bridges, wave or rain scatter and the like.

It will even give you the vessel’s name amongst other characteristic information so, when you put out a “security call” during a transit (“secure-a-tay, secure-a-tay, securea-tay, this is the M/V Charlie westbound on the rhumb line from Montauk to New York City, all vessels on opposing course, please be advised”), you can say, “Hailing

Suggest we both go to starboard and open up a lane between us.” That’s technology reducing risks at sea.

The US Coast Guard has noted that AIS might replace RACONs, or RAdar beaCONs, currently used for electronic navigation aids. And, if buoys and beacons can transmit their data, it will be a further aid when aid is mostly needed – poor visibility and crowded seaways.

And don’t be surprised if you hear about Virtual AIS. In one example, an AIS transmission describes the position of buoy but the signal itself originates from a transmitter located in a USCG station miles away and on land. For example, an on-

shore base station might broadcast the position of a string of channel markers, each of which is too small to contain a transmitter itself. In another example, AIS could transmit the image of a marker which does not exist physically but now marks a transient situation, like a sunken vessel or channel that had shoaled over. Although such aids would only be visible to AIS-equipped ships, this would be a lot cheaper – and faster – than physical markers.

Should I Get One!?

AIS transponders come in 2 classes. Class-A really IS for the big guys – it is a fully integrated system, costing $3,000-$5,000 and is technologically beyond most private skippers in complexity and size. With that said, for $600-$900, there is a Class-B transponder which

can be integrated into your existing electronics package. The best device to integrate it with is your chart plotter. And, most importantly, Class-A AIS systems can see Class-B and vice-versa.

One last thing: AIS “hates” to be close to AIS, meaning, it is selfalarming. You set the perimeter or zone of safety and, if another AISequipped boat enters that zone, the alarm goes off. And, on your chart plotter, you see its heading, speed, position and name. Immediately.

PARENTAL “WRITES”

A local parent messaged me for help with her adult child who was still living at home, not working, not attending college or technical school, not helping with household chores, sleeping late, going to bed late and, simply, driving her crazy. Trust me. This parent is not alone.

The old expectations that children will move out once finished with college and have a career, get married, have a family and become independent has changed in recent years. Studies show that one-third of young adults now live with their parents.

And out of that one-third, one in four is neither working nor going to school. They are idle and not showing any desire to prepare for a successful future.

This can be very stressful and concerning for the parents.

All parents want what is best for their children and having a successful life is a part of that.

So what can a parent do if a child is living at home causing stress and resentment?

1. Get rid of the old patterns.

Your child is an adult now and needs to be treated as such. It is a roadblock to treat them the same way you treated them when they were adolescents.

2. Stop being an overfunctioning parent. When you do too much for your child, he/she becomes underfunctioning and will do too little.

3. Set clear timelines and expectations with, not for, your adult child.

4. Do not blame yourself nor shame your child for the current status. Instead, work on setting goals together.

5. Be a consultant and not a boss.

6. Let go. Let your child blossom into an adult.

You must also take a closer

look at yourself. Are you still doing laundry, paying bills, cleaning up for your adult child? It might actually be that you really do not want your child to move out. If that is the case, then at least teach your child to be a responsible adult who partakes in the household

finances and chores.

Your real job as a parent is to prepare your child to be on their own in the world. Your goal should be to help them achieve self-sufficiency. To love your child is to assist in letting them make their own

path, their own mistakes and their own successes.

Respect the necessary transition that both you and your child will go through and be persistent. Taking the steps described will help you and your child grow.
