Tate’s Bakery Subject of Harassment and Intimidation Complaint

A complaint charging Tate’s bakery with 10 instances of intimidation and harassment against workers attempting to unionize at the company’s East Moriches facility has been filed by Local 298 with the National Labor Relations Board.

“I’m tired of being mistreated,” said one of the two workers named in the NLRB complaint.

“They exploit people as much as they can.” The employees asked that their names be withheld for fear of retribution. The company has been accused of threatening its mostly immigrant workers with deportation if they pursue unionization.

“Collective bargaining is a powerful tool to address the concerns of the minimum wage worker,” said Vic LaGreca, president of Local 298, a part of the Eastern States Joint Board and its affiliate, the AFL-CIO. “Immigrants working without a contract are at the mercy of the employer and in many cases, if they don’t have a union behind them, are subject to abuse.”

Workers at Tate’s, which was bought out by the Illinois-based conglomerate Mondelez in 2018, approached the union last summer with concerns over wages and hazardous working conditions, especially COVID safety measures, and said they were harassed and threatened with deportation if they moved forward with a vote.

“When we started looking into forming a union, management harassed us,” said another worker who also would not give his name. “They said if we vote for the union, we will be deported.

This is a scare tactic that is not legal. Everyone has the right to vote on joining a union. We hope that the vote is fair.” Mail-in ballots will be sent out March 26 by the NLRB which has set an April 21 deadline for ballots to be returned.

According to employee complaints, Tate’s forced workers to sign petitions against unionizing or risk losing their benefits and told workers who support the union that they will be fired six months after the vote. They also sent company “spies” to employee meetings offsite where unionizing was being discussed, union officials charged.

Congressman Tom Suozzi wrote to Mondelez Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Dirk Van de Put to “express my serious concerns about allegations that one of your subsidiary companies is threatening workers in order to prevent them from unionizing.” He continued: “I demand that your company thoroughly investigates all allegations of employee intimidation and ensures that Tate’s workers are allowed to freely choose whether to unionize during the upcoming vote.”

“The benefits of unionization are clear,” said Joe Giovinco, the union’s secretary-treasurer.

“Workers have much more power in negotiating a contract as a group. They are assisted by experienced negotiators and under federal law, management must make a good faith effort in offering a contract which all the members can vote on. Our position as a union is if we can’t help negotiate a contact that the members approve, we walk away.”

Issues on the table for Tate’s employees, according to Giovinco, include COVID-safe working conditions, wages, benefits, paid time off, work rules, seniority, and a grievance process to work out employee issues. “If there is no union and

there is no contract, these workers will continue to be taken advantage of with no recourse,” he said.

“Once a contract is in place, union representatives are available to assist members in all issues pertaining to the workplace, particularly with safety and grievance issues. “Our members know they always have someone to turn to.”

On the front lines to provide information to the Tate’s workforce as the union vote nears is Anthony Miranti, vice president of the Eastern States Joint Board, an organization made up of unions representing not only factory workers, but more than 10,000 paramedics, EMTs, bus drivers, cargo handler, and health care professionals nationwide. “These minimum wage workers are seeking a decent life in the United States and are willing to work hard for it. We believe they should be given a fair shake by conglomerates such as Mondelez and not be taken advantage of,” Miranti said.

“Experience has proved that protection by law of the right of employees to organize and bargain collectively safeguards commerce from injury, impairment, or interruption, and promotes the flow of commerce by removing certain recognized sources of industrial strife and unrest,” the NLRB says on its website. As per the National Labor Relations Act, harassment in response to unionization efforts is illegal, and workers are protected under the act regardless of their immigration status.

“We’ve found that once a contract is in place, the relationship between management and the employees improves dramatically,” noted the Joint Board’s business agent, Cosmo Lubrano. “With union representation and a fair contract, workers have better job security and are more productive.

This benefits the company and it is our goal since after all, if the companies don’t succeed, we don’t succeed.”

“Without a contract, it’s hard for a worker to sleep at night thinking that their job may not be there in the morning,” Miranti said. “You’re worried that the guy next to you, who you’ve been training, is going to take your job. If you have an idea about how to do a better job, you keep it to yourself. With a contract, everyone is protected, including the company which has less turnover and training costs because people aren’t coming and going as much. It’s well worth it for a company to pay a fair wage to the experienced and dependable workers that are part of a union.”

Because of its size, the Eastern State Joint Board has an advantage in securing health insurance and other benefits for its members. “Many times, companies will offer our benefit package to their employees because it’s less expensive and provides more options than plans they can find on their own,” LaGreca noted. “Benefits for the employees that we represent have never been reduced or eliminated.”

Tate’s started as a one-woman operation in Southampton and has grown to provide products across the U.S. and internationally with the local plant cranking out over 1.5 million cookies a day.

It was bought out for $500 million in 2018 by Illinois-based Mondelez International, which also owns the Nabisco, Oreo and Ritz brands. Many of its operations are unionized. The company did not respond to a request for comment.

Vote to Unionize Tate’s Should Be Fair and Free of Threats Intimidation and harassment complaints against Tate’s bakery in East Moriches coming to light as employees pursue unionization are both improper and troubling.

If management is threatening the mostly immigrant workers with deportation if they vote to join Local 298 as reported, then these tactics are not only despicable, but also illegal under the National Labor Relations Act. Last summer, workers with a number of grievances approached Local 298 about joining the union. They hold out hope that a contract secured under collective bargaining with the expertise and skill of union leaders behind them would result in better wages and benefits, safer working conditions, clear work rules and a grievance process to work out employee issues.

These are hard-working people who have a dream to prosper in America just like everyone else.

They deserve safe working conditions and fair treatment from the international conglomerate, Mondelez, which bought Tate’s in 2018 for an astounding $500 million. The owner of Nabisco, Ritz crackers, and Oreo cookies are already unionized in many of their operations. They should let the vote to unionize Tate’s happen without fear, intimidation and worker harassment.

Quality of life issues including public safety, removal of zombie homes and recovery from the social and economic impacts of the COVID pandemic will be the focus of Jim Mazzarella as he kicks off his campaign for the Suffolk legislature.

“I’m running to be part of the team that will deliver the services we deserve here in the Third Legislative district,” Mazzarella said at a press conference announcing his candidacy last week. He has received the endorsement of local officials and civic leaders and pledged to work with them to continue the initiatives started by Legislator Rudy Sunderman who is leaving to take a job in fire services.

“Over the last four years, the communities that make up the Third Legislative District have experienced a renaissance after more than a decade of neglect,” said GOP Chairman Jesse Garcia.

“To keep this good work going, Supervisor Ed Romaine and Councilman Dan Panico need Jim Mazarella as their partner in the County Legislature. “He is a proven tax fighter who has spent his career protecting the middle class. Jim Mazzarella will continue the progress made by Legislator Sunderman, and see to fruition critical infrastructure projects such as the Forge River Sewer District, road improvements and flood

Garcia noted a long record of successful initiatives benefiting the families of the district over the last four years of the Republican partnership between the town and Suffolk County including the removal of hundreds of Zombie homes and major capital investments along in Mastic Beach, Shirley and Yaphank.

It is in the area of police services that Mazzarella said the community would most benefit and he outlined a number of issues to make the district safer: • Expand sector patrols • Restore foot posts, bicycle patrols, and substations • Hire a new police class • Bring back the DARE Program • Monitor and prosecute sex offenders • Properly fund and staff Suffolk Police Running on a “Families First” platform, Mazzarella has a long track record of service to the community. He served as a Trustee of the Mastics-Moriches-Shirley Community Library for 10, including five years as president, and has been a member of the Rotary Club of Shirley and the Mastics for more than 20 years.

He active with the Crystal Beach Property Owners and is well known for his involvement in many civic, charitable, and education initiatives in the Bay Area. He also serves

as a member of the Brookhaven Town Board of Zoning Appeals and is the Secretary-Treasurer of Local 342, a public services union that represents 1,500 sanitation, highway, library, fire, water district and other municipal employees on Long Island. His family settled in Shirley in the early 1960’s and he is a graduate of William Floyd High School.

Mazzarella singled out the Forge River sewer project as a once-in-alifetime opportunity for the area and promised to work tirelessly to see it through. “The voters approved this vital project and I help make sure it gets completed,” Mazzarella said. “The health and wellbeing of our area depends on safe and reliable sewerage and it is critical that the project gets done in the most cost-effective and efficient manner possible.”

The candidate also said he will work to address flooding in the Mastic Peninsula and will push for more bulkheading, wetlands restoration, drainage and roadway projects. He said he will fight to bring more sidewalk, highway and drainage work to the area.

His opponent, Kate Browning, served as a legislator for 12 years but had to leave because of the term limit law approved by voters in 1994. Her ability to skirt the law by running for the seat has been called into question as the election gets underway.

County Clerk Pascale Offers “Homeowner Watch List” Suffolk County Clerk Judy Pascale would like to inform the public about a free service for Suffolk’s homeowners that will send them an email alert when any new activity is filed against their property.

“It’s important that homeowners have the comfort in knowing their property records are accurate and secure. This complimentary service will allow property owners to view their property’s most recent history and will notify them when and if any new documents related to their property are recorded in my office,” stated Pascale.

The most common documents recorded in the Clerk’s Office are deeds, mortgages, satisfactions and assignments of mortgage, which are routinely recorded. There may be some very rare instances, however, when a document may be recorded in error. This new service will send an email notification to enrolled participants when any new documents are recorded.

“Whenever a homeowner participating in this program refinances their mortgage, pays off their mortgage, or adds a family member to the deed to their home, this service will send them an email alerting them to the new recording.

Just as important, in the event a document is unexpectedly recorded against the property, the homeowner can contact my office to investigate,” said Pascale.

Suffolk homeowners can join the Homeowners Watch List Program by visiting the Suffolk County Clerk’s website at Suffolkcountyny.gov/clerk.

Interested homeowners must preregister on-line. A letter will then be mailed to the physical address of the property to allow us to verify ownership. The letter will contain a unique PIN number, which is required to register in the program. All subsequent notifications will be sent via e-mail. Therefore, a valid e-mail address is required.

Legislator Nick Caracappa Assists World War II Veteran with Vaccine

Suffolk County Legislator Nick Caracappa recently joined a very special constituent, Mr. Frank Vene of Selden, a 101 year-old decorated World War II veteran at the Selden campus of Suffolk County Community College to witness him receiving the first dose of the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine.

Mr. Vene’s 78 year-old daughter, Laraine Kelly, also of Selden had reached out to Legislator Caracappa’s office after several unsuccessful attempts to get vaccine appointments for her father and herself, who both qualified immediately based on age. “It was so frustrating how the state kept lowering the age requirements for those who qualify,

when the elder population was still unable to get vaccinated,” stated Ms. Kelly. “My father and I are so grateful to Legislator Caracappa and his staff for their persistence in helping us get an appointment so quickly.”

Fears Rise Over Safety of Gov. Cuomo’s Bridge

Fears that the new Tappan Zee Bridge may be unsafe amidst alarming allegations of a coverup of major structural problems have thrown new fuel on the fire to force Gov. Cuomo out of office. The bridge was a pet project of the governor who named the span over the Hudson River for his father, former Gov. Mario M. Cuomo. Now, like many other aspects of the Cuomo Administration, its mired in scandal.

“Members of the New York State Assembly Minority Conference request that your office launch an immediate investigation into the structural integrity of the bridge, and whether any attempts were made by state officials to prioritize a rushed completion of the project at the expense of safety concerns,” 43 state legislators wrote in a letter to Eric J. Soskin, the Inspector General of the U.S. Department of Transportation. “Action by your office would provide much-needed reassurance to commuters from several states that one of the region’s most critical roadways is structurally sound.

In addition, your role as Inspector General would be instrumental to ensure any official who put New Yorkers in danger be held accountable.”

“Almost every day, we receive new information that demands either the resignation or impeachment of Gov. Cuomo,” said one of the letter’s signers, Assemblyman Joe DeStefano.

“Aside from the fact that our state is an economic mess thanks to his incompetence and misguided policies,

now we learn that the Tappan Zee Bridge may be unsafe. The state Capitol is in turmoil and the governor has lost the ability to lead. It’s time for him to go.” A centerpiece of Cuomo’s infrastructure plan, the bridge was completed four years ago at a cost of $4 billion.

for political reasons. After launching an investigation, the New York attorney general confirmed Cuomo’s misreporting of the nursing home deaths in a scathing report. While all of this is going on, six women came forward with allegations of sexual harassment by the governor.

The bridge fiasco comes on the heels of a U.S. Department of Justice investigation over nursing home deaths caused by Cuomo’s decision to send COVID patients to health

“The catastrophic risk that exists if this structure were to fail or become compromised is immeasurable,” said Assemblywoman Jodi Giglio, who joined her legislative colleagues in

care facilities primarily occupied by senior citizens. The governor then misled the public over how New York became the epicenter for COVID fatalities and then his office admitted that critical information about the virus was withheld from the public

asking the Inspector General to launch an investigation. “The feds must step in immediately to assure the public that this bridge is safe.”

According to Giglio, the U.S. Department of Transportation should:

· Investigate any attempts by state officials to rush completion of the project at the expense of safety concerns. · Hold responsible any official who put New Yorkers in danger. · Publicly release all of the details of the state’s settlement with the bridge’s contractor over potentially faulty materials used in the bridge.

In 2017, the New York State Attorney General launched an investigation into concerns raised with the structural integrity of bolts used in the construction process of the bridge, and whether Tappan Zee Constructors (TZC), a private corporation, falsely certified the bridge’s safety, according to state officials. This investigation resulted in a $2 million settlement with the state, with relevant records sealed from the public.

“Based on conversations with individuals involved in both the bridge’s construction and the Attorney General’s investigation, recent reports raise serious and numerous concerns over the bridge’s safety and whether political intervention influenced the investigation,” the letter to the feds states. “The slow movement of the inquiry, the unusually-low financial settlement reached with TZC, the political considerations at play in finishing the project as quickly as possible, and the failure to publicly release the conclusions of the state’s findings all raise serious concerns about the integrity of the investigation.”

Care Givers for the Intellectual and Developmental Disabled Need Greater State Support Senator Anthony Palumbo (R,CNew Suffolk), member of the State Senate Committee on Mental Health, is working to stop the proposed State Budget cuts to services for people with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (I/DD), while providing additional funding to OPWDD in order to give care givers of (I/DD) a long overdue pay increase. Senator Palumbo noted that for years, the state has underpaid group home employees, the same workers who have now spent over a year caring for some of New York’s most vulnerable residents during a pandemic.

“The men and women who care for New York’s most vulnerable residents haven’t seen a cost of living increase to their pay in over a decade,” said Senator Palumbo. “Even as the State has increased minimum wage, these workers have been unjustly left behind.

Ten years ago, an employee working in a group home made nearly double minimum wage, now they make a dollar less than the $15 an hour minimum

wage. This lack of support has resulted in underpaid employees caring for our most vulnerable residents without the proper PPE and support they need to keep residents and themselves healthy.”

Roy Probeyahn, Chair of the Suffolk County Disabilities Advisory Board shares Senator Palumbo’s concerns: “I am the father of 3 adult sons in their 50s with autism. My wife and I have raised them at home to this very day. The staff who help care for our sons in the day program and at home are woefully underpaid for the important work they do, barely minimum wage. The not-for-profit providers they work for have not received a COLA in the last 11 years. NYS has cut funding to OPWDD, which funds these agencies during that time and in the current budget. This is a system in crisis, which is unprepared to meet the challenges of today, nor the promise of a future for our loved ones.

They, our most vulnerable citizens, need appropriate care based on their needs.

New York State must withdraw the proposed funding cuts to the services

for our loved ones in this budget, fund the enhanced service needs required for pandemic recovery and the full range of residential and rehabilitation services so desperately needed. People with I/ DD, their families, the providers that support them deserve no less. My sons, and all our loved ones, deserve no less.”

To address these serious concerns and help protect New Yorkers with Intellectual and developmental disabilities Senator Palumbo is calling for: • Reverse all proposed cuts to services for New Yorkers with I/DD and reject the deferral of the COLA in this year’s budget. This would help support Direct Support Professionals (DSPs), who are the unsung frontline healthcare workers vital to I/DD supports and services; • Reject a 1% across-the-board cut to support and services; • Reject pending residential cuts to agencies/providers for residents who go

home for a visit or are hospitalized; • Reject the 5% cut to non-Medicaid state aid funding; • Release $25 million in federal COVID-19 relief funds to voluntary providers for the recruitment, training and retention of non-supervisory residential DSPs; and • Enact statutory protection to ensure all cuts to the I/DD system are fully restored if the requested federal funds are received by the state as currently, there is no such guarantee.

“For too long, New York State has failed its most vulnerable residents and ignored the needs of the intellectually and developmentally disabled,” said Senator Palumbo. “The COVID pandemic has cast a bright spotlight on these failures, but also provides us with the opportunity and urgency to do better for New Yorkers with intellectual and developmental disabilities and the men and women who care for them.”

Senator Palumbo Announces New StateRun Mass Vaccination Site on the East End Senator Anthony Palumbo (R,C-New Suffolk) today announced that New York State will place a state-operated mass vaccination site on SUNY Stony Brook’s Southampton Campus. The Southampton site is one of 10 additional state-run mass vaccination sites announced to expand New York’s vaccine distribution network.

“Over the past few months I have worked closely with my colleagues in the Legislature and with state and local officials in advocating for greater access to the COVID-19 vaccine for our residents here on the East End of Long Island,” said Senator Anthony Palumbo. “This new vaccination site will greatly enhance our region’s ability to vaccinate local residents, especially seniors, who have been hampered by long commutes to vaccination sites and with scheduling appointments. I want to thank SUNY Stony Brook for continuing to partner with us and for their amazing work at helping the community in this time of need.”

Senator Palumbo noted that the site is expected to launch in the coming weeks. Final details, including appointment scheduling information and hours of operation will be released in the coming days. An Update from Albany

With the legislature in session, the Capitol has been busy, but unfortunately not much of the people’s business is getting done thanks to politics as usual by the Democrat majority.

After a three-week delay, budget hearings began last week and the longawaited information on the COVID crisis was not forthcoming from the Cuomo administration. On the heels of a scathing state Attorney General report and an investigation by the U.S. Department of Justice, the governor still refuses to tell us the true impact of his decision to send virus patients into the nursing homes.

Just when we thought the governor would come clean, his secretary admitted during a backroom meeting that the administration purposely withheld the facts about Cuomo’s nursing home mandate to avoid criticism from President Trump. She apologized to her fellow politicians, but

the governor has yet to apologize to the families and friends of those who lost their lives due to his tragic decisions.

The Democrats who granted the governor extraordinary powers at the start of the pandemic postured for weeks about returning these powers back to the elected legislature. They agreed with us that the governor’s ability to shut down the state and issue mandates that impacted almost every aspect of our lives had to be repealed.

Then they went behind closed doors with the governor and when they came out, it was soon apparent that they had folded.

The governor’s situation has Albany in turmoil. In addition to the Department of Justice Investigation into his COVID coverup and the refusal of the Democrats to curtail his power, allegations of sexual harassment against Gov. Cuomo have made national headlines. In typical fashion, the governor wants the allegations

addressed in-house, while many are demanding for his resignation. On my side of the aisle, Republicans have called for a special committee to begin impeachment proceedings. In the meantime, the Democrat majority is conveniently skirting the critical issues facing New Yorkers such as fully reopening our state, getting the economy back on track and repealing the disastrous bail laws that have made a mockery of our criminal justice system. Solving these problems require leadership and we are just not seeing it from Gov. Cuomo and his colleagues.

If you guessed that this mess will equate to higher taxes, you guessed right; and the Democrats are already talking about it. Thankfully, the citizens of this state are active and engaged and I’m confident they will not rest until we’re back on a positive path.

What we are seeing in our government today is disturbing and unacceptable.

The people are demanding better.

Every day, more information comes forward that makes it impossible for the governor to lead us out of the COVID pandemic and the horrible financial condition that years of his poor management and misguided fiscal policies have wrought. Even a fraction of Cuomo’s transgressions would disqualify anyone from office, yet he defiantly thumbs his nose at New Yorkers. Here are just a few: • After his decision to force nursing homes to take in virus patients (while hundreds of beds had been set up at the

Javits Center, Central Park, colleges, and even a Naval hospital ship), Cuomo refused to give us a straight answer why and then tried to cover up the record number of deaths.

• In the face of the U.S. Department of Justice investigation and a scathing report by the state Attorney General, the governor’s office admitted that it withheld critical COVID information for political reasons.

• Now we are up to six woman making sexual harassment charges against the governor, anyone of which should be grounds for his immediate resignation.

• As the harassment charges were made public, members of the governor’s staff reportedly contacted the women to gather information on the accusers supposedly to repress the charges and discredit them.

• An investigation has called into question the safety of the Tappan Zee Bridge, one of the governor’s pet projects that he named after his father. Legislators have requested a federal investigation of concerns over structural deficiencies and the quick settlement with the contractor over the use of substandard materials.

With one of the most important budgets ever considered by the state taking a back seat as New Yorkers are faced with unprecedented perils to their health and economic well-being, the Capitol is in turmoil thanks to a governor who has long past worn out his welcome. We don’t need anymore investigations and denials to know that its time for him to go. Governor Cuomo must resign now or face the indignity of impeachment.

Blast from the Past: Moriches Elementary Discovers 20-Year Old Time Capsule

Twenty years – that’s how long a kindergarten time capsule was safely tucked away at Moriches Elementary School until principal Deirdre Redding recently discovered it in the back of a supply closet. This time capsule project that the five Moriches Elementary kindergarten classes of 2000-01 undertook to memorialize their interests – such as their favorite toy, their favorite video game, favorite singer or song, favorite television show and where they like to celebrate their birthdays – has brought back fond memories for the teachers involved.

While a few things have stayed the same, much has changed.

“We have been in that closet so many times over the past decade and have never seen this box. It was kismet that it was found this year, exactly 20 years after completion of the project,” said Mrs. Redding. “I enjoyed reading the children’s ideas and it brought back fond memories from the past. We like to think that Moriches holds a special place in the heart of those who have graced these halls,” she added. “Seeing the students leave such a special memento behind reminds us that there is always a connection to the past. The

voices and hearts of these students have always been here, and always will be.”

“It was so exciting opening the time capsule box,” said Mrs. Heather Foster, currently a second-grade teacher who was Ms. Lynagh at the time. “That was my first-year teaching at Moriches. It will always hold a special place in my heart. Looking back on all the special things the children wrote made me smile. I still remember many of the students and their wonderful parents. I often think of my very first class here and was touched to discover our time capsule. What a wonderful memory!”

Mrs. Phyllis Jonaitis, who was also in her first year teaching at Moriches Elementary in the 2000-01 school year, was “thrilled” when Mrs. Redding showed her the time capsule and enjoyed reading the students’ responses. “The memories of that year came flooding back to me,” she said.

“I was in awe looking at the students’ writing and pictures.”

Dr. Rhonda Stitham, currently a fourth- and fifth-grade virtual teacher at Moriches Elementary School, said, “After 20 years, it was simply amazing to see what students associated with during that time period. As I

looked at what the students wrote, I could see a theme – electronics and superheroes. Many of the students focused on the Gameboy and up-andcoming technology. Ironically, this technology has evolved over 20 years into many gaming systems created by Nintendo. Many students also chose to write about superheroes such as the Powerpuff Girls. In kindergarten, students love to talk about heroes with powers and abilities that surpass time.”

Two other classes were involved – retired teachers Mrs. McAlary and Mrs. O’Brien. Nutritional Aide Recognized for Aiding an Unresponsive Patient Nutritional Aide Amber Ramroop was already well known and respected by both patients and staff at Long Island Community Hospital for her bright and cheery attitude, and for her “Can-Do” attitude by her supervisors and peers. On January 16th, she also added the distinction of Hero to her many accolades. While delivering a lunch tray to a patient, Amber noticed a sudden change in the patient’s breathing and responsiveness. She immediately notified the nursing staff which triggered an alert of the hospital’s rapid response team, resulting in the successful resuscitation of the patient.

“For the past year our front-line caregivers have gone above and beyond protecting our community from the COVID-19 pandemic,” stated Richard T. South Country Central School District students celebrated the first 100 days of school with special and engaging hands on English language arts, mathematics and arts activities to mark the momentous occasion for the district’s elementary school students.

At Brookhaven Elementary School, kindergarten students in Jennifer Drake’s class came dressed in specially designed T-shirts to reflect the number of days they have attended school. The class made 100-day hats and stacked pennies for 100 seconds. They made Fruit Loop necklaces, separating the cereal in groups of 10. Students tried to see how many sight words, letters and their names they could write in 100 seconds and jumped, ran in place and stood frozen for the same

amount of time. The students also enjoyed playing dice games such as Race to 100, a dot grid game for finding specific groups, and Toss a Penny 100 times to see whether heads or tails is revealed the most.

Due to the number of snow days, the 100th day of school landed on a virtual day, so Mrs. Drake’s class also celebrated 101 days with a 101 Dalmatian theme.

Like the 100th day celebration, students participated in themed activities, such as placing 101 dots on a dog, playing the Racing to 101 dice game and barking for 101 seconds. They also stacked dog bones for 101 seconds as “Who Let the Dogs Out?” played in the background. To top off the activities, the students shared Scooby gram bones and fruit snacks.

SUFFOLK CLOSEUP

BY KARL GROSSMAN The process of getting a vaccination at Stony Brook University to prevent COVID-19 was amazingly wellorganized. I had been concerned about getting to the site where shots were being given on the sprawling Stony Brook campus but signage was abundant. And traffic was directed by National Guard soldiers and Stony Brook University Police.

There was an enormous number of people at various stations inside the campus building being used for vaccinations—many of them drawn from the various Health Sciences programs at Stony Brook. They were consistently helpful.

Quite an activation of resources! Very impressive!

Getting an appointment wasn’t easy but I kept trying by calling the state’s “vaccination hotline” (at 833-697-4829).

And, finally, I landed a slot.

I was given the shot—of the Pfizer vaccine—by a team two young women who attend the Stony Brook School of Nursing. I told them, as the needle was prepared, about being a journalist and having written articles about the founding of their school in the early 1970s.

I suggested they Google the name of Dr. Edmund Pellegrino to learn about why, largely because of his leadership, the Health Sciences programs at Stony Brook—including the School of Medicine, School of Nursing, and School of Dental Medicine—are unusual. Dr. Pellegrino pioneered interdisciplinary health science education and clinical care at Stony Brook as its vice president for health sciences.

It was déjà vu time. It brought me back to covering Stony Brook way back—and getting to know its students, faculty and administrators—and especially the visionary Dr. Pellegrino.

BY ROBERT CHARTUK I was watching the movie, The Professor and the Madman, the other day and scenes of the British Parliament in London came on the screen. It reminded me of my visit there a few years back when I attended the International School of Fundraising. My friend, Ron Nehring, was one of the instructors and he invited me to spend a week with him at Wellington College where the school was having its classes.

Ron was friends with a fellow who worked in the Palace of Westminster and since the houses of Commons and Lords were not in session, was able to meet us at a side entrance and sneak us in. This was before COVID and we had the run of the place, peeking into some of the grand rooms and sitting where the royals sat. The most fascinating part of the 900-year old building is the great hall which has been witness to some of the most memorable moments in English history including the coronation of Richard I in 1189, trial of the Scottish Knight, William Wallace, in 1305, and the famous 1996 address by Nelson Mandela.

We toured the city on an iconic red Double Decker bus and I got to see the all the famous sites such as the bridges over the Thames, but not the fabled one that I heard about falling down throughout my childhood. That one was actually packed up and moved to Arizona in 1967 while in its place stands a rather unimpressive edifice of white concrete. We shopped at Harrods, the humongous store, and saw a memorial to Princess Diana, the owner’s son being the one the Princess was with when she was killed in a car accident in France while being chased by paparazzi.

Later that day, we took in the James Bond movie, Skyfall, where some of the scenes showed the places I had just been such as the immense London Eye Ferris wheel, Big Ben, Piccadilly Circus, and the various monuments and statues.

Wellington College was also a special place. Named for the Duke

of Wellington, its entrance was lined with massive redwood trees, a gift from the Duke who lived nearby. We were there in the spring while the students were in recess and we stayed in the dorms, which reminded me of my days at Oswego College. The administration felt that the buildings didn’t need any heat since the students were away and we froze our butts off. The president of the college joined us for dinner one night and I asked her about the giant redwood trees and she didn’t know much about them, which I thought was rather strange. She did possess a peculiarity which I detected in the British which is a rather annoying habit of including every last detail when telling a story and then backtracking to change the facts which they had previously misstated and then starting again to let us know it happened on a Tuesday, or was it Thursday, at noon and then checking with the spouse to see if it was at one, or was it two? Oh yes, it was noon and it was sunny that day, no wait, I think it was raining and I had on my yellow Mac, or was it the red one?… Being from New York, I

just wanted to hear the punch line and get on with another topic.

During a break in class, I checked the news back home on my Kindle and read about the Manes American Peace Prize sponsoring a gun buyback program in Nassau County.

So many guns came in that they quickly ran out of money. Since I was at an international fundraising school, I brought up the story with some of the attendees and we came up with ways the Peace Prize could raise money to take even more guns off the street. When I got home, I wrote the foundation a letter explaining how we discussed the buy-back effort and some ideas during a special training module.

Soon after, I received a call from Peace Prize founder, Dr. Harvey Manes. We worked on a few projects together including a generous gift to the Guardian Angels where I got to meet founder and radio personality Curtis Sliwa. Dr. Harvey became a true friend all thanks to that letter inspired from England and even hosted a small birthday party for me on Christmas Day for the occasion of my 60th birthday.

We saved much in installing them with a LIPA rebate. That rebate no longer exists, but over the decade the price of solar panels has halved and their output significantly increased. Houses and commercial and government buildings throughout Long Island should have solar panels on their roofs.

Coupled with this, we had an “energy audit” done of leaks and other issues and took simple steps to make our more than century-old saltbox house energy efficient.

We also have two rooftop solar panels that produce hot water.

LIPA has been deeply involved in the major state initiative underway to place wind turbines well off our shores.

Yet in addition to the sun which on most days shines on us and the winds that blow mightily off our coasts, there are other available energy sources. Take wave and tidal power long advocated here by Sarah Meyland, a professor in the Department of Environmental Technology and Sustainability at New York Institute of Technology in Old Westbury. As Dr. Meyland has stated: “One thing Long Island has that no one else in the state has is wave ener-

gy. We have it 24 hours a day. The sun doesn’t have to shine, the wind doesn’t have to blow. Tides rise and fall on a regular basis, day in and day out.” Countries especially in Scandinavia, have “deployed tide-generated plants that are completely submerged and generate a lot of electricity.

It’s absolutely clean, and if we could support enough of these, we would solve a lot of our downstate energy problems.”

Indeed, next to Roosevelt Island in the East River, off Long Island’s west end, Verdant Power has had a demonstration project with six turbines spinning with the river’s motion. Verdant now seeks to install 30 turbines to generate electricity.

There are opportunities to use tidal power to Long Island’s east—with Plum Gut off Orient Point ideal. Natural Currents Energy Services has been considering it. We’ve been in Plum Gut in our sailboat when the tide is changing—and, wow, what power waits to be tapped! As for the waves hitting Long Island’s ocean beaches, the energy that can be gotten from them is also endless—and other nations are harnessing wave-power.

Considering its founding mission, it’s a natural for LIPA to be a safe energy leader.

Mistakes People Make with Do-it-Yourself Wills

Q: Should I write my own will?

A:

Whenever I hear someone say they wrote their own Last Will and Testament, a familiar phrase comes to mind, “Don’t try this at home!” Unless you are an experienced estate planning attorney, it is not a good idea to write your own Will, or to order a Will off a generic, nonstate specific website. There are so many important details and formalities that go into the preparation and execution of a Will. The whole process can easily fall apart if not done properly. I have compiled a list of some of the top mistakes that can occur when using a “do-it-yourself Will” 1.) Improper Execution. When a Will is signed with an attorney, there is a presumption that it has been executed properly. In order for the Will to be duly executed, the testator (person signing the Will) must declare the document to be their Last Will and Testament before two disinterested witnesses, and all three parties must sign the document. The witnesses must be satisfied that the testator

had capacity to make a Will - knew his or her family members and the assets in the estate. When a Will is signed without an attorney, it becomes the burden of the Executor submitting the Will for probate to prove that the deceased person signed the Will properly. To add further complication, if the witnesses do not sign an affidavit attesting to the deceased person’s capacity at the time of the signing, the Executor must locate them and obtain their signatures as part of the probate proceeding. For older Wills with unknown witnesses, this makes the process incredibly difficult, and ripe for objection by disgruntled beneficiaries.

2.) Failure to Name Successor Executors or Beneficiaries. While most people contemplate who they wish to leave their assets (beneficiaries) and the person who will administer the estate (Executor), it is not uncommon that an inexperienced Will draftsperson would forget to name alternatives. If the people originally named are deceased, the Will fails and the assets are distributed pursuant to state intestacy law.

3.) Not Considering Tax Issues. There are certain provisions which can be added to the Wills of a married couple that allow for New York state estate tax savings by preserving the unused credit of the first spouse to die. This is often done by including provisions for a bypass trust for the benefit of a surviving spouse. Without extensive knowledge of trust and tax law, one would not be able to draft a Will to take advantage of this tax planning.

4.) Disabled, Debtor or Minor Beneficiaries.

When leaving assets to a disabled or minor beneficiary, special considerations must be taken. If a disabled person is unable to manage assets and/or is receiving meansbased government benefits, leaving assets to them outright will jeopardize their ability to enjoy the inheritance. Similarly, if a beneficiary with creditors inherits property outright, their inheritance is now subject to their creditors. This can be avoided by having the Will leave assets to the debtor beneficiary in trust in order to protect the inheritance. Lastly, assets left to a minor beneficiary must be held in trust

until they reach an age of majority. If left outright, someone will have to petition the Court to be the minor’s guardian in order to manage those assets since minors are prohibited from owning property.

5.) Losing Sight of the Big Picture. The final problem with do-it-yourself estate plans is that they often do not address the entire estate. A Will can only control assets in your estate when you pass away. If certain accounts are joint with another person,

or if you have named beneficiaries on an account, those do not pass through your Will. Rather these assets pass to the joint owners or beneficiaries by operation of law.

Writing a Will that leaves certain assets to individuals is ineffective if there is a conflicting beneficiary designation or joint owner. This is why treating the Will as part of your overall estate plan and making sure all the designations line up cohesively is just as important as the Will itself.

Creating a Will is so much more than just writing down the names of those who you wish to inherit. It is about creating a comprehensive plan not only for your death, but disability and the future death and disability of your beneficiaries. While it may seem easy to write something simple yourself or download a form from the internet, failing to have a properly drafted and executed Will has major consequences that can leave your intended beneficiaries with much less than you intended.

When I have written in the past about the need and use of a VHF radio, I noted that if you didn’t have a radio aboard that you were risking your life over a couple of hundred dollars – it was “nutty” not to have a radio aboard. Nonetheless, many don’t! And those skippers rely on their cell phone for emergency assistance.

OK, I guess you can lead a horse to water but you can’t make him drink. Here is the “scuttlebutt” on cell phones on the water… *CG - Gone

Starting in the early 90’s, many cell phone service providers offered a special telephone number that would give you direct access, via your cell phone, to a US Coast Guard Operations Center.

However, as many cell systems were upgraded, the feature didn’t migrate to the new system and the Coast Guard found that coverage was thus very spotty and could create dangerous delays in dispatching USCG resources to an emergency situation. As a consequence, in October 2006, the Coast Guard requested that all cellular phone service providers discontinue the “*CG” service, except in Alaska, and any such calls be routed to the 911 Public Safety Answering Point (PSAP) nearest to where the call

originated.

Even when it worked, mariners didn’t always know where they were and the USCG had no ready mechanism to determining where they were. Now, with Rescue 21, this problem has been dramatically reduced and often eliminated, if you are using a VHF radio.

Lastly, even when you did reach the USCG, they were the only one aware of your predicament. VHF-16 is, by Federal law, required to be monitored by all vessels equipped with a VHF radio.

Another private boater could be much closer to you than the nearest USCG station – and getting the “rescue clock starts now” sequence going may be the difference between life and death.

“Hello? Hello? Can You Hear Me Now?” Cell Phones and Boats, Part 1 Here is a likely scenario – there is a cell phone tower high up on a hill somewhere and it, with its higher-powered signal, can see you. But your cell phone isn’t strong enough to transmit all the way back to the cell tower! So, if you are intent on using

external antenna, can I suggest again that you attach a VHF radio to it?

Take it, by all means! When it does work, there is no better way to have a private, non-emergency conversation and most USCG and USCGAux vessels are equipped with cell phones for this reason.

But, when it comes to an emergency, your VHF radio is the best and fastest way to being rescued!

But I Want My Cell Phone!

OK, skipper, here is the scuttlebutt.

First, there is no – none – reliable way to be definitive about cell phone coverage at sea. Is it better the closer you are to land?

Yes, compared to being far away. But cell phone systems are designed for land-base use and the associated physics of how objects absorb and reflect signals. Water is an entirely different kettle of fish, no pun intended. Another agonizing puzzle is when you can see “5 bars” on your cell phone but still can’t connect a call. Why?

If your boat is disabled and bobbing in the waves, there is no way to move closer to an adjacent cell like your car naturally does.

Today, mental health professionals dispute the notion that boys require constant male companionship and male guidance in order to grow up healthy. These professionals believe that boys can be successfully raised by a single parent, either mom or dad. In fact, having a father at home who does not provide the necessary qualities of a healthy male role model can do more harm than good.

If there is no man in the household, the advantage might be having a son who does not compete for your attention and does not harbor guilt feelings about wishing ill will on the person he would have to split his time with, when it comes to sharing you!

Poor relationships with their own fathers may be the root problem for a lot of men. Consider all the magazine articles, books, and talk shows dedicated to understanding why some men can’t commit, or why certain men cheat, are aggressive, avoid responsibilities to their families, are afraid to marry, or beat their spouses.

A large number of these men state

that they have problems relating to their fathers. Feelings of being inadequate, betrayed, ignored, or humiliated by their fathers were the most common complaints.

THE DOS AND DON’TS OF RAISING SONS-

Do expect that most boys grow and mature at a slower rate than girls, so be patient about your son’ development Do teach your son values, but let him express them in his own way, which may mean not showing his feelings about things the way you do Do believe in yourself and try to encourage self-esteem in your son as well. Let him know that you are confident as a parent Do teach your son to show respect for both males and females and to cultivate friendships with both Do help him to seek healthy male role models. Point out the positive qualities in men you see on a day-to-

day basis, including the neighborhood pharmacist, or patrolman Do limit the amount of violence he witnesses. Let him know that what is shown on TV is not always the way healthy men should behave Don’t worry that he won’t learn manly things without a man at home!

Half the population is male and he is certain to pick up social skills from other males he comes in contact with Don’t avoid talking about his father, even if you don’t know him well. Give your son someone to think about with whom he can identify.

Point out positive traits your son may possess that remind you of his father.

OBITUARY ELSIE FARINA, 74, a resident of Mastic since 1974, died on March 8, 2021 while in hospice care in Northport. Born September 6, 1946 to Aida (Edith) and Gerardo (Jerry) Farina in Newark, New Jersey.

She was a retired Suffolk County Police Department Civilian Police Operations aide. Elsie was a member of the Mastic Fire Department, ExFire Captain, Life Member and Past Department Secretary. She was the beloved mother of Lisa Marie Kane and Cindy Tullo and her husband Mark Tullo. She was the beloved grandmother of Shannon, Lauren, Casey Kane and Baylee Kaydee and William Tullo. Family and friends will be welcomed at Roma Funeral Home in Shirley on Thursday from 2 to 4 pm and 7 to 9 pm. A Mass will be offered at St. Jude’s RC Church in Mastic Beach on Friday at 10:00 am with interment following at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery, Center Moriches.

She loved spending time with her family and was a devoted mother to Lisa Marie Kane and Cindy Tullo. She was the proud and loving grandmother to Shannon, Lauren, Casey Kane, Baylee Kaydee and William Tullo.

Some people spend their entire life in service to others. Why? Not for the sake of glory or recognition but because they are called to answer an innate desire to comfort, support and nurture those in need. Such was the life of Elsie Farina.

Elsie was born in Newark, New Jersey to Aida Edith) and Geraldo (Jerry) Farina.

She moved to Mastic in 1974 where she planted roots, raised her family and settled into becoming a member of the Mastic Fire Department. On March 8, 2021 this beautiful, special woman was called home to Heaven.

Her second greatest love was the Mastic Fire Department where she spent countless hours and years volunteering her time and talents. She was a true example and role model for young women.

Elsie loved animals, attending Rod Stewart concerts and traveling to California to visit family.

How do you thank someone who has given so much to so many and asked for nothing in return? Elsie Farina will be sorely missed by her fellow firefighters, this community and especially her beloved family. As we come together, we celebrate her life and her accomplishments, but most of all, we celebrate a woman who gave all of herself without reservation.

Thank you from a grateful community for all your years of selfless dedication!
