Mastic Beach Acquires Ambulance Corp Building

The Mastic Beach Fire Department has purchased the Mastic Beach Ambulance building from the Town and is now receiving bids to have the building renovated. Fire Commissioner Bill Biondi has informed us that the acquisition was necessary due to the shortage of storage space for lifesaving, marine, and communications equipment necessary to effectively service the needs of our community and its 7-8 miles of waterfront.

Library Reviews Progress With The Bay Area Civic

Anticipation is building over the ambitious plans to improve library services in our area as the Bay Area Civic Association hosted an update session with library officials at their January meeting.

Bids for work on the initial phases of the project are being requested with work expected at the Moriches and Mastic Beach annexes to begin in the spring. “Getting the two annexes completed first is part of the plan to temporarily house library operations until the main building on William Floyd parkway is complete,” explained Kerri Rosalia, director of the Mastics-Moriches-Shirley Community Library.

“The members of the Bay Area Civic share the excitement of our community to improve library services,” said association president Fred Towle. “We’re glad that the library officials came to our monthly meeting to share the project updates.”

Joining the library director at the meeting was Trustee Mike Dubois. “We appreciate the community support we are receiving to expand library services in the Moriches Bay Area,” Dubois said.

Commissioner Biondi’s office is currently packed with communications equipment and looks more like a warehouse than an office. In the past, generous donations by citizens have increased the amount of space required to adequately store this vital lifesaving equipment.

Commissioner Biondi has in his budget for this building renovation $200,000--$300,000.

As of yet, there have been no bids. The renovation entails converting the recreation room of the newly acquired building into a drive-thru bay with 12’ rollup doors.

This would entail raising the roof of the building. Bidding started Friday, January 26th. Commissioner Biondi is looking to a completion

date of July 1st, contingent upon conditions affected by Covid-19. Currently there are 16 Volunteers who will be using the marine equipment.

Obviously, the Fire Department provides essential community services. The additional space which will be realized by the purchase will greatly enhance our ability to keep us safe and improve the quality of life in the Mastic Beach/Shirley areas. The renovation will maximize town efforts to serve the basic needs of our community.”

Cuomo Declares State of Emergency for Suffolk & Nassau In what is slated to go down in history as one of New York’s biggest storms, Governor Andrew M. Recognizing Business Commitment in Mastic Beach

Residents of Mastic Beach came out in full force on Jan. 28 to support local businesses that have longstanding ties to the community. In an effort organized by the Mastic Beach civic organizations, leaders from the town, county and state recognized businesses that have been serving the community for 50 years or more.

Suffolk County Legislator Rudy Sunderman joined with members of the Pattersquash Creek Civic Association, the Mastic Beach Property Owners Association, New York Senator Alexis Weik, Brookhaven Town Supervisor Ed Romaine, and a representative of New York Assemblyman Joe DeStefano to make their way around Mastic Beach presenting certificates to the businesses and thanking them for their commitment to the Hamlet of Mastic Beach.

The Passing of Former Assemblyman John Behan of Montauk

I was deeply saddened to learn of the sudden passing of my predecessor in the New York State Assembly, John L. Behan. At a time when these terms are thrown around far too carelessly, John was a true American hero and patriot.

His life was dedicated to serving his country, state and community.

As a U.S. Marine in Vietnam he

fought bravely and courageously for his country and was seriously wounded, losing both legs in May 1966. Undeterred by his severe injuries, John returned home to a life of achievement and community service.

He learned to walk again with the use of artificial limbs.

He represented his country as a member of the U.S. Wheelchair

Olympics team in Peru in 1972 and Canada in 1976. He was the team captain in 1976. He won gold medals in the javelin, and medaled in shotput, discus and as a member of the basketball team. In 1976 Newsweek magazine named him as one of the 46 Americans who best represented our nation in its bicentennial year.

Palumbo Calls On Zucker to Resign, Urges Legislature to Rescind Governor’s Emergency Powers In the wake of Attorney General Letitia James’ bombshell report showing that New York State vastly underreported COVID nursing home deaths, Senator Anthony Palumbo (R,C-New Suffolk) today called for the resignation of Health Commissioner Howard Zucker.

Senator Palumbo also reiterated his call to have the legislature strip Governor Cuomo of his

Assembly Passes Legislation to Help Small Businesses Impacted by COVID-19 Assemblyman Fred Thiele today announced he helped pass several pieces of legislation to help workers and small businesses impacted by COVID-19. The legislation will allow workers to collect unemployment insurance (UI) while working part time, prevent businesses from being charged higher rates for UI and put a stay on evictions and foreclosures for small businesses.

• A.2001-A (Zebrowski) would prevent small businesses that were forced to let workers go as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic from being penalized with higher UI rates when they reopen. The experience rating is used to assess unemployment charges on employers that reflect their past unemployment claims.

Small businesses often have lower UI experience ratings since they usually have a small number of past claims and a low number of employees.

This legislation will exclude these businesses from additional UI charges if they were forced to close or reduce their staff after March 12, 2020.

• A.2355-A (Stirpe) would allow workers who find part-time work to maintain eligibility for UI. New York State’s current UI program imposes a 25 percent reduction to a claimant’s full benefit for any work performed in a single day. This fails to provide an adequate level of income security for workers who have experienced reductions in usual hours, and creates a disincentive for people to return to part-time work. In addition to helping New Yorkers, the bill will also improve local economies – for every dollar of UI allocated, between

$1.61 and $2.00 is generated in the economy.

• A.3207 (Bronson), also known as ‘The COVID-19 Emergency Protect Our Small Business Act of 2021’ would put a moratorium on evictions for small businesses of fewer than 50 employees until May 1, 2021, and create a standardized hardship declaration form to be used by tenants and landlords in order to take advantage of the protections. It would also put a stay on foreclosures for small businesses of 50 or fewer employees that have 10 or fewer properties that they are renting.

Additionally, the legislation would provide tax lien protections and negative credit reporting protections to small business property owners.

Assemblyman Thiele cosponsored each of the above pieces of legislation, which have now passed through both the Assembly and the State Senate. They will be sent to the Governor for final consideration.

Assemblyman Thiele stated, “Small businesses are the backbone of our economy. Here on the East End and across New York State, businesses are reeling from the financial devastation caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. We must do everything in our power to help small businesses remain viable and essential components of our economy. I was proud to support these measures to provide necessary relief and protections to small business owners, and will continue to fight on behalf of East End small businesses toward that end.”

He served as East Hampton Town Assessor and then succeeded Perry Duryea as State Assemblyman in 1978, serving for 16 years before becoming the Director of the State Division of Veterans Affairs under the Pataki Administration.

Born on Veterans Day, John’s life and political career were dedicated first to helping the nation’s veterans, particularly his fellow Vietnam vets, who faced unprecedented obstacles coming home from an unpopular war. His efforts were crucial in getting the public to separate the plight and needs of veterans from the politics of the war. His impassioned speech on the floor of the Assembly led to the creation of the first Assembly Stand Committee on Veterans Affairs, of which he became the ranking member.

In 1985, John led the historic New York State Delegation to the Socialist Republic of Vietnam.

In April 1985, Mr. Behan was honored to lead, along with Mayor Ed Koch, New York City’s “Welcome Home Parade to Vietnam Veterans” down the famed canyon of heroes.

Every one of us can point to a few people in our lives who were mentors that truly made a difference in the trajectory of our lives. John Behan was one of those people in my life. As a recent law school graduate in 1979, John took a chance on me and hired me to be his counsel. We worked closely together for almost 3 years on bills relating to justice for veterans exposed to Agent Orange, helping our local police, protecting our fishermen, and even Peconic County.

More important than any issue, was the example he set as

a person. He was inspiring to all whom he touched. Working for John was not just a job, you became part of his family in the process.

His generosity to me sparked my career in government on the county and town level. When it was time for him to join the Pataki Administration, his support was the difference in me becoming his successor. I have told him many times publicly and privately that I owed him a debt of gratitude I could never repay.

I have heard from so many people in the last few days since John’s passing. Most notably, others like me, who worked for him and sprouted from the Behan political tree. The same words are repeated over and over: “larger than life”, “icon”, “hero”. Inherent in all the comments is the word “respect”.

He got it and he gave it. We are all richer for having known him.

My condolences go out to Marilyn and his entire family. We remember the good times. Semper Fi!

Zeldin, Local Elected Officials, Environmental Stakeholders and Affected Residents Demand Additional Navy Action re Contaminated Drinking Water in Manorville & Calverton

Early last week Congressman Lee Zeldin (R, NY-1) was joined by Riverhead Town Supervisor Yvette Aguiar, Tim Hopkins from the Suffolk County Water Authority, Adrienne Esposito of Citizens Campaign for the Environment and affected Manorville residents Kelly McClinchy and Ron Martz to demand the Navy take additional action to provide residents who live near the Naval Weapons Industrial Reserve Plant in Calverton with clean drinking water.

“Failure to act is not an option, but every step of the way the Navy has dragged their feet, and the more we learn, the worse it gets,” said Congressman Lee Zeldin. “Just this November, we learned that the Navy knew

On December 16, 2020, the Suffolk County Department of Health Services released data from testing of private drinking wells near the Naval Weapons Industrial Reserve Plant. This testing found that of 95 private wells sampled, 14 of the wells showed the presence of PFAS.

“The Suffolk County Water Authority has already drawn up plans to provide safe drinking water to everyone in the community. We’ve conveyed those plans to the Navy and we’ve given them cost estimates on how much it will cost to provide public water to everyone in the area,” said Chief Legal Officer for the Suffolk County Water Authority Tim Hopkins.

Northwell Health and Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory Open Virtual COVID-19 Clinical Trial for Non-Hospitalized Patients An outpatient, digital, randomized clinical trial will look at the safety and efficacy of famotidine (Pepcid) to treat mild to moderate Covid-19 The Feinstein Institutes for Medical Research and Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory (CSHL) are recruiting patients in a fully virtual, in-home, randomized, double-blind, placebocontrolled clinical trial to evaluate the safety and efficacy of famotidine, or PEPCID, for the outpatient treatment of the novel coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) in adults. Sold over-thecounter as PEPCID, famotidine is a histamine 2 blocker used to decrease stomach acid and this clinical trial will assess its use as a COVID-19 therapy.

This is the first time an entirely virtual clinical trial has been initiated

by CSHL and Northwell Health, New York’s largest health system, which has

treated more than 100,000 COVID-19 patients since the start of the pandemic in March 2020. The trial is recruiting patients across the greater New York area who have tested positive for COVID-19, but are experiencing only mild to moderate symptoms that do not require hospitalization.

For those who qualify, and once consented, patients will be trained to use a cellular activated Apple iPad from their home, along with a Bluetooth enabled scale, thermometer, fitness tracker, spirometer (to study air flow in and out of the lungs), thermometer and pulse oximeter (to measure blood oxygen levels). Placebo or famotidine at 240 mg per day will be prescribed, and taken orally, for a maximum of 14 days.

Famotidine is a common, safe over-the-counter drug used to treat heartburn and assist with healing gastrointestinal ulcers. In April 2020, the Feinstein Institutes started the nation’s first famotidine clinical trial, which enrolled more than 230 patients.

The initiation of the clinical trial was based on anecdotal reports from China that patients taking the drug had better outcomes from COVID-19.

At the start of the pandemic the Feinstein Institutes established a COVID-19 Clinical Trial Unit (CCTU), a 200-member rapid-response clinical trial group of scientists, physicians, administrators and staff to review and launch clinical trials. Since March, the CCTU has enrolled patients in more than seven clinical trials and programs – including famotidine, remdesivir, sarilumab and convalescent plasma.

Overall, more than 1,200 patients were enrolled into COVID-19 research trials across the health system, resulting in more than 200 manuscripts published, providing guidance to clinicians worldwide.

BY TOM BARTON This Sunday at 6:30pm from Tampa Bay we, as sports fans, get a gift. The Tampa Bay Bucs take on the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl 55. This is the first time that a Super Bowl contestant will be playing in their home stadium but after the uncertainty that 2020 brought it’s just good to be playing this game anywhere. With that said we shouldn’t just be happy we have the big game, but rather understand that this could be the greatest Super Bowl matchup of all time.

The greatest QB in the history of the NFL Tom Brady takes on the man who many are calling the most gifted quarterback ever in Patrick Mahomes.

Mahomes and his Chiefs are favored by 3 points and the line makers expect some offensive fireworks with a total set at 56. The story lines are dripping with historical implications between these two. Tom Brady is the oldest QB to ever get to this level, and with

his 10th Super Bowl appearance his accomplishments are being discussed as possibly the greatest in any sport. Brady has separated himself as the greatest QB long ago and now this legend is just building his status even more. Leaving New England and the hoodie, coming down to Tampa and winning were one thing, but a Super Bowl, with generally no offseason. There are no words.

As far as Patrick Mahomes goes there is a lot yet to be written, but very few times in sports history do we get to see ‘the next’ take on the greatest ever to try and steal his crown. Mike Trout will never face Babe Ruth. LeBron James will never go head to head against Jordan. Connor McDavis won’t ever skate against Gretzky. But we do get Mahomes against Brady. Mahomes has his own legendary start as well. Just a few years into the league the man already has an MVP. a Super Bowl trophy, a Super Bowl MVP and now

has a chance to add on to this resume.

What a resume it will be if he can knock off the GOAT in his own house, on the biggest stage.

Defenses will of course be a large part of this game, as will the uber talented receivers for both teams but we have to be honest with ourselves and just know this is all about Brady against Mahomes. This game is nearly impossible to pick, it’s your old fashioned catch 22. You either have to go against the best team in the NFL the past two seasons who have lost just a handful of games through 2 years, with the best offense this league has seen in decades, led by a possible 2 time MVP in the past 3 seasons. Or you have to walk up to the betting counter (or press a button on your phone) and with full confidence say that you are betting against the greatest player, and greatest winner in the history of the sport. Oh yeah and you’re giving him points.

I expect a very fun game. Gone are the days of Super Bowl blowouts and I think we see another tight game where it legitimately might be whoever gets the ball last wins. There are only a few times in sports where fans know going

Can I transfer my home if I am on Community Medicaid?

Given the changes to C om mu n it y Medicaid, there are still a few unknowns regarding how New York State will handle certain issues. In April 2020, the State passed a new thirty-month lookback for all Community Medicaid applicants. The law was written with an effective date of October 1, 2020. This means any transfers or gifting from the Medicaid applicant after October 1, 2020 will result a penalty period - a period of ineligibility. NYS has not been able to implement the new lookback period due to protections under the Families First Cares Act – likely delaying implementation until at least July 1, 2021. However, once enforced the lookback period is expected

to apply to any transfers postOctober 1, 2020.

Up until now, there has been no lookback for the Community Medicaid program. This meant that with minimal preplanning, an application could be prepared and submitted without a concern for transfers of assets the applicant made prior to applying. This is no longer the case. Although the State is not yet enforcing the lookback period – estate planning attorneys are unsure how Medicaid will consider transfers made after October 1, 2020 at the annual recertification for Medicaid benefits. Will transfers after that date make the Medicaid recipient ineligible and cut off care they had been receiving?

Similarly, it is unclear how the new legislation will impact

transfer of the primary residence.

Under Community Medicaid

rules, the primary residence is exempt because the Medicaid applicant is residing there.

However, it has always been advisable to transfer the residence

to start the five-year lookback period for Chronic Medicaid – nursing home care. When

there was no lookback period for Community Medicaid, this was often done while someone was still at home and they could receive homecare services during that five-year period without penalty. But now will the transfer of the primary residence create a penalty period?

Certainly, the Medicaid applicant can transfer the primary residence to a spouse, child under 21, disabled or blind child, caretaker child, or a sibling with equity interest who resides there. These transfers are exempt from penalty. But can the Medicaid recipient transfer the house to an irrevocable trust – which is treated as a gift that would normally incur a penalty period? Without further clarification, we are unsure how

the new legislation will impact Community Medicaid recipients’ ability to transfer their homes.

Now more than ever it is important to consider your estate planning and the reality that if you apply for Community Medicaid in the future, you will be subject to a thirty-month lookback. By setting up a properly funded Irrevocable Trust and getting through the thirty -month time period, you will ensure that assets held in the trust are protected.

If you are considering applying for Community Medicaid for yourself or your loved one, an application should be submitted as soon as possible prior to the enforcement of the new legislation.

Northport VAMC has received 2800 Moderna vaccines. They have been administering the vaccines as outlined with CDC guidance.

They have vaccinated 120 veteran’s residents living in the CLC and dialysis patients and offering to the residential veterans at Northport.

Currently they have over 900 staff members vaccinated and that number is growing.

They are awaiting approval for veteran outpatients to begin to administer the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine. This will be by appointment only and will be only offered at Northport, based on CDC recommendations.

The Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) recommends that, when supplies of COVID19 vaccine are limited, vaccination should be offered in a

phased approach.

BY DOMINICK FORTE Gabriel the Archangel is the most highly celebrated angel in all religions and cultures of the world, both ancient and current. He is the only angel mentioned in both the Bible and the Koran other than the Prince of the Heavenly Hosts, Michael himself.

References to Gabriel in religious, apocryphal, and mythological literature depict him as the intermediary between God and us.

Although an Archangel, Gabriel is the leader of the Cherubim. This is interesting because the Cherubs are ranked higher in the angelic hierarchy than the archangels. I’ll be explaining the angelic hierarchy in future columns. For now, just know that all angels although equal in the eyes of the Creator have ranks and are organized in a quasi-military chain of command.

Gabriel’s awe-inspiring horn is perhaps the most famous of all angelic artifacts. Nearly four feet long, it is forged of shimmering, reflective silver.

He uses it to play enchanting music which serves as the musical score backdropping both heaven and earth.

However, the horn’s most important use is on the celestial battlefield spurring on the Heavenly Hosts in combat, signaling a strategic retreat, or playing taps at the end of conflict.

It also leads Heaven’s Marching Music Ministry accompanying a Triumphant Michael returning from warfare with the vanquished Satan.

WORKING WITH A DISSAPOINTED / ANGRY CLIENT With the high rates of burnout, and its associated health and mental health issues in our work, it’s imperative that we build a compassionate resilience as we sit with the most painful aspects of clients’ emotions and behavior.

When sitting with a client who is particularly angry, disappointed or negative, give yourself permission to imagine an invisible shield of light that surrounds you, holding and protecting you as you connect with your own experience Imagine watching the client’s emotions pass over and around you, taking in only what you need to

understand, as if you are sitting on a riverbank watching a rushing torrent of emotions pass by.

Take whatever you are preoccupied with regarding your work and notice it as a complete thought.

Can you wish yourself well as you encounter this experience?

Now add the following to the beginning of the thought:

WAIT Before you Self-Disclose -

“Right now, I noticed myself having the thought that....”

When you notice the urge to disclose a personal anecdote, struggle, observation or reaction, mindfully pause, breathe and ask yourself ....

As it becomes clear that the thought is just that, and not necessarily accurate or the only way of seeing thing, what happens to your experience of it?
