Suffolk County Legislator Rudy Sunderman Resigns

Suffolk County 3rd District Legislator Rudy Sunderman announced he will resign his elected position in the county, effective at the close of business March 21.

This leaves the seat open for a special election, where a date will be announced, likely for May or June.

Sunderman told South Shore Press during an interview on Friday, “After much discussion with my family and close friends, I now have the opportunity to pursue a career in the Fire/EMS field. Those who know me well, know that this field has been my passion with the many years of experience.” Sunderman, who will assume the position as Deputy Director of Suffolk County Fire Academy, brings 14 years of experience as instructor to the Academy prior to his election to the Legislature in November 2017. “This is an opportunity for me to bring my level of training and experience to the 12,000 new and veteran firefighters in the County,” Sunderman said.

Sunderman will continue to serve as Chief of Mastic Fire Department.

In the meantime, Sunderman says he remains “committed and 100% focused on fulfilling my duties as a legislator, and when the time comes, I will transition to proudly serve my community in my new venture.” Sunderman said he will also “be there to ensure and support a smooth transition” to the 3rd LD. Sunderman said he looks forward to seeing work he started come to fruition in the near future and leaves the Legislature with a tenured record of accomplishments that includes but is not limited to installation of sidewalks, roadways, drainage, the sewer district, fighting for groundwater protection, and “working in a bipartisan manner to make public safety the number one priority.” Sunderman was instrumental in securing $3 million

for the Mastic Beach Downtown Revitalization initiative and Violets Cove future plans, Smith Point Bridge replacement, upgrades to roadwork in Bellport, upgrades to of road and drainage work on William Floyd Parkway at Havenwood to Smithpoint, and finishing utility poles in Brookhaven. Other projects include the turning lane with arrow light at the Frowein Avenue and Moriches Middle Island Road intersection in Center Moriches.

He said the grade railroad crossing that juts through the heart of the LD remains tied up in the courts.

In his own court battle, charges brought against Sunderman on whether he can hold dual offices were dropped. “The judge has dropped the number one charge against me about holding dual offices,” Sunderman said. The pending charge on Sunderman’s failure to check a box on his financial disclosures remains in the courts.

“The case is being handled by my attorneys, and the courts will make the final determination, but I know I am 100% innocent. This was a political attack on my career,” he said.

Suffolk County and Brookhaven Town Republican Chairman Jesse Garcia said he joins the families of Suffolk’s 3rd Legislative District in thanking Sunderman as their representative. Noting Sunderman’s earning the honor of ‘Firefighter of the Year,’ Garcia said, “After a lifetime of serving his community and placing his life on the line as a volunteer firefighter, Rudy is returning to his calling after serving his community in government. The Suffolk Fire Academy, and future generations of firefighters will benefit greatly from his experience and expertise in his new role.”

Suffolk County Legislator Presiding Officer Rob Calarco said, “I want to thank Legislator Sunderman for his years of service to the resident

of the 3rd Legislative District. His tenure is marked by a commitment to his constituents and the county. I wish him the best of luck and know he will continue to serve us all well be helping train the next generation of firefighters.”

But the question remains, ‘who will succeed Sunderman’ as Legislator of Suffolk’s 3rd District?

Suffolk County Democratic Chairman, Rich Schaffer, said it is likely Kate Browning, who held the seat as legislator until she reached the end of her term limit, will likely run again. “With the news that Sunderman will be resigning, we’ve had conversations with former Legislator Kate Browning, and are excited about the possibility of her running for her former seat,” Schaffer said. “She has an established record fighting for the district and will bring some much-needed stability to the residents.” Citing Browning’s tenured record, Calarco added, “I am excited that Kate Browning will be running for the Legislature. In her previous tenure as a Legislator, she accomplished so much, from preserving open space, to kickstarting the now imminent sewering of Mastic and Shirley, to dealing with the quality of life issues that are so important to our residents. Calarco said Browning’s “depth of knowledge of both the 3rd LD and the County” will equate to “no learning curve, and she will be able to roll up her sleeves and get right back to work.”

The law specifically says no person shall serve more than 12 consecutive years - not 12 years total. The election law, approved at referendum on November 2, 1993, states that “the term of office of a County Legislator shall be two years which shall begin on the first day of January following the general election at which the County Legislators are elected. No person shall serve as a County Legislator for more than 12 consecutive years.” Presiding Officer Calarco explained, “Just as someone can serve for 10 consecutive years, leave for a time and comeback to serve another 12 years, so could someone serve a full 12 years, leave for a period of time, and then come back to serve again.”

Garcia, meanwhile, said, “Rest assured, the Brookhaven and Suffolk County Republican Committees are well prepared to retain this important seat.” To select a GOP candidate to run to fill the vacancy created when

strategy and lay out the coalitions I have set in place to support our candidate. I have told stakeholders in the community and the Town and County Republican organization that if there’s one area where we are poised to win a Special Election - it is right here in the hands of the Brookhaven Committee Members of this district.”

Cuomo COVID Coverup Leads to Impeachment Drive

As the truth comes out about Gov. Cuomo’s cover up of elderly deaths in New York nursing homes, procedures have begun for his impeachment.

Republicans in the state assembly have been pressuring the administration for months to release data on why New York became the epicenter for deaths among the elderly. As answers starting coming in, including an admission by the governor’s secretary that they withheld information for fear of a federal investigation, legislators have called for a special commission to advance his impeachment.

A proposed concurrent resolution of the state Assembly and Senate would establish the “Temporary Joint Legislative Committee on Investigating the State’s Response to the COVID-19 Pandemic in Nursing Homes,” according to Assemblyman Joe DeStefano. The Committee would be tasked with “examining the state’s method of administration and conduct in all matters relating to nursing homes and long-term care facilities during the COVID-19 pandemic.”

“We need to get to the bottom of what went wrong with the state’s pandemic response and hold those responsible

for the many thousands of deaths, especially those who tried to cover it up,” DeStefano said. “New Yorkers who lost friends and family deserve nothing but the truth.”

The resolution sets a 60-day deadline for the Committee to conduct its work and submit findings and recommendations to the Legislature.

“The Cuomo Administration’s nursing home cover-up is one of the most alarming scandals we’ve seen in state government,” said Assembly Minority Leader Will Barclay. “Intentionally withholding critical information from the public, underreporting fatality numbers by 50 percent and the recent revelation they hid the truth to avoid a federal Department of Justice investigation are among the factors that raise the serious possibility of criminality. It is incumbent upon the Legislature to undertake a comprehensive, bipartisan review of the Cuomo Administration’s policies, decisions and actions on this matter and render a decision on what steps must be taken to hold the governor accountable.”

The bipartisan panel would consist of eight members, with two appointees from each legislative leader. Of those eight members, the Assembly Speaker

and Senate Majority Leader would jointly appoint one co-chair, while another co-chair would be named by the minority leaders in each house.

The impeachment panel would have the same powers of a legislative committee, including the ability to

The Democrat members of those committees have not responded or pursued legislative hearings.

“The Legislature has a responsibility to hold this administration accountable,” the assembly Republicans said in a joint statement. “Rolling back the governor’s emergency powers is important, but doesn’t begin to scratch the surface of what’s needed. We now know the federal government is investigating Gov. Cuomo, as Assembly Republicans have been calling for. But in no way should the federal response prevent state legislators from pursuing the truth, gathering facts and determining the proper course of action.”

Historically, the New York State Legislature has always checked executive abuse and power. In May 1913, a joint legislative committee was established by a concurrent resolution to investigate Governor Sulzer’s use of patronage. It was named the Frawley Commission after Sen. James J. Frawley who chaired the committee. The Commission’s scope was later expanded to investigate Sulzer’s campaign finances. The ultimate impeachment of Gov. Sulzer was based on the Commission’s findings.

Cuomo created a special Moreland Commission to investigate corruption in state government, but abruptly disbanded it after investigators came to close to his administration.

A History of Plum Island

For those that don’t know, Plum Island, formerly Fort Terry, is a facility that studies animal diseases. It is located about one and a half miles off the coast of Orient Point. In 1826, the United States government purchased three acres on Plum Island for a lighthouse. In 1897, 130 more acres were purchased for defending the coast. Soon after, the United States government built Fort Terry as a headquarters for the Army. In 1901, the rest of the island was bought. During World War II, soldiers were trained to arm torpedoes on Fort Terry.

During World War II, an outbreak of “Foot and Mouth” disease broke out in Mexico. Over the next few years, over $100 million was spent on research to cure the disease. In 1946, a disease laboratory was built at Fort Terry by the government. Fort Terry was closed in 1948 because we were no longer at war and it was no longer needed.

In 1953, the Army turned over part of its facilities on the island to the Agriculture Department and the island was officially opened as an animal disease laboratory. In 1971, the press visited the island to get information on the studies of different diseases but were refused any information about the use of Plum Island that the government declared “classified.”

To this day it is said that much of the work done on Plum Island is secret. Early documentation suggests that Plum Island was involved in biological war research. The research continued until President Nixon “officially” ended the biological warfare program in 1969.

The island itself is mysterious; much about it remains classified.

None of the 200 plus employees live on the island; they commute from Connecticut and Long Island. The island is accessible by government ferry and local sailors who have strayed too close have reported being warned off by armed military personnel.

There has only been one outbreak on the island, the Foot and Mouth disease outbreak in 1978, which was contained by killing all the livestock. The US government maintains that

there never has been a leak to the mainland. There have been theories saying that Lyme disease originated on Plum Island since its first documented case appeared 13 miles northeast of the facility.

Some people are concerned that the facility on Plum Island could come under attack by terrorists. Nelson Demille wrote a novel called Plum Island, a mystery thriller involving murder near the island. Dr. Hannibal Lector was offered a “vacation” on Plum Island by the FBI in the novel The Silence Of The Lambs.

Not all news about Plum Island is mysterious, however.

Plum Island more recent updates: In 2019, Representative Lee Zeldin co-authored language in a Department of Homeland Security appropriations bill to restrict the sale of the island and repeal the requirement to sell Plum Island.

The amendment to the bill seeks to limit “future use of the island for the purposes of research, education, and conservation.”

The Town of Southold has zoned the island so that it cannot be developed as a resort or luxury home developments and preserves most of the open space.

So what is going on at Plum Island today? That still remains to be seen. This author believes, as others do, that secret activities and research are still going on here. Whether this is true or not we may never know since access to the island is still restricted and the government, obviously, will not reveal any “classified” information. If updated vital information is found out, by this author or others, it will be made available in future articles.

Bonner Announces Completion of Mount Sinai Harbor Reconstruction and Dredging Project

Councilwoman Jane Bonner has announced that the dredging of Mount Sinai Harbor has been completed. It is the final phase of the Mount Sinai Harbor jetty reconstruction and dredging project which was started in May 2020. The Councilwoman worked for many years to secure the funding and the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYSDEC) permits that were required before the project could start. She also worked closely with the Army Corps of Engineers to bring the project to fruition. Funding came from a $3 million New York State grant secured by former NYS Senator Ken LaValle, and $5 million from the Town of Brookhaven. Dredging of the inlet was recently completed by Suffolk County at a cost of $2 million and the dredge spoils were given to Port Jefferson Village for beach sand replenishment.

The reconstructed Mount Sinai Harbor jetties and dredging project are critical to the navigation of thousands of recreational and commercial boats in and out of the harbor. It also opens the

channel to allow proper water flow which is vital to the harbor’s environment. The Town has invested in the harbor’s future by regularly seeding it with millions of young oysters that are raised in the Town’s shellfish mariculture facility located at the harbor. Once matured, the oysters will each filter 50 gallons of water per day.

Supervisor Ed Romaine said, “The reconstruction and dredging of Mount Sinai Harbor could only happen with cooperation from all levels of government and I commend Councilwoman Bonner for her persistence and leadership role to get the job done. The harbor is one of the busiest in the Town and we needed to make it safer for boaters and more environmentally sound. This project accomplished all of our goals on schedule and in time for us to welcome the 2021 boating season in the Town.”

Councilwoman Bonner said, “Over time, hurricanes, nor’easters and other storms created a navigational hazard in Mount Sinai Harbor and something had to be done to make it safe. I thank

former Senator LaValle and the Town taxpayers for funding this project, Suffolk County for their efforts to complete the inlet dredging, Nelson and Pope for their engineering services and Ed Morris, our Commissioner of Parks, Recreation, Sports and Cultural resources, who was the point person for the Town. Now that the job is done, boaters can feel safe as they move in and out of the harbor and there will be a very positive effect on the environment of the harbor and Long Island Sound.”

Over the years, the rocks that comprised the jetties collapsed such that the seaward ends became submerged at high tide and the elevation of the jetty stones above the water surface at high tide was, in many places, less than four feet. In addition, the west jetty became detached from the land at high water and sand was passing through or around the east jetty. SCOPE Education Services Chosen as a Finalist in The Long Island Imagine Awards SCOPE Education Services, a private, not-for-profit 501 (c) (3) organization, permanently chartered by the New York State Board of Regents to provide services to school districts in New York State, has been selected as a finalist in the ninth annual Long Island Imagine Awards, Social Impact Category. This prestigious award was created to formally acknowledge Long Island’s most effective and innovative nonprofit organizations.

SCOPE was selected from among more than 140 applications.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, SCOPE Education Services was among the first to provide a healthy and safe fullday child care program across Long Island

for families of first responders, health care professionals and other essential workers at no cost to families. From the start of the program until it ended at the end of August 2020, the SCOPE team quickly analyzed the unprecedented needs, developed and implemented new safety protocols and programs, and secured and trained the necessary qualified staff resulting in a safe and nurturing environment for children in their care.

During the program’s existence, not one staff member or child in the program tested positive for COVID-19.

Following the reopening of schools in September 2020, SCOPE successfully reopened its before- and after-school

child care programs in 194 locations in Nassau and Suffolk counties. This transition was made possible by the successful continuation of the health and safety protocols and training implemented during their emergency services program and the professionalism and dedication of the SCOPE staff.

“I am so proud to work at SCOPE,” SCOPE CEO and Executive Director George Duffy said. “SCOPE is an amazing organization with a staff who has an unbelievable work ethic, dedication, and passion for achieving SCOPE’s mission of serving others.”

Since SCOPE Education Services was establish in 1964, it has offered numerous programs and services to local school districts for educators, parents and children including professional development, conferences, training, before- and after-school child care, preschool, elementary enrichment courses, outdoor education, summer environmental adventure programs and workshops/speakers bureau for parents and students. In addition, SCOPE provides services for employment including courses required for New York State certification. “I asked what is the law?” said Senator James Gaughran from Northport, who is an attorney. He said he was “shocked” to find that “violating” New York State’s Human Rights Law was “not a reason” for the state’s Secretary of State to “revoke a salesperson’s or real estate broker’s license.” So he promptly went to work on a bill to allow the Secretary of State “to revoke or suspend” the license of “any real estate salesperson or real estate broker found to be steering,” and also impose a fine.

The law providing for the revocation or suspension of licenses to sell real estate can be a key to challenging a discriminatory practice—as long as there is regular testing so evidence can be brought against the offending real estate people. And, among the 11 bills is a measure raising fees for state licenses to sell real estate with that extra money to be used to fund fair-housing testing.

Other bills requires real estate agents to take additional hours of anti-bias training for license renewal and would allow the state Division of Human Rights to mete out compensatory and punitive damage awards to victims of bias in real estate sales.

Suffolk Legislator Sam Gonzalez of Brentwood, chair of the county’s Fair Housing Task Force, who presided at the public hearing, said it will soon be making recommendations focusing specifically on Suffolk County.

Mets Join the Yankees in Pre-Season Hype with a 96-66 record, or a 77% chance to win their division.

Interestingly they had the Nationals next with 85 wins and the Braves all the way down at 82, and in 4th place. USA Today predicts the Mets will finish 2nd to those Braves with 86 wins, so the jury seems split.

Buried under what has seemed like endless snow it might be hard to imagine but pitchers and catchers have finally reported to spring training and this long hard winter just got a little warmer and brighter for baseball fans. As for our local teams, this season seems brighter than most. The Yankees are in the same position that they have been in for years, with high expectations, but this year the Mets also join the ranks of the fans expecting big things from Queens.

The line makers around the country have spoken and they think both the Yankees and Mets will win more than 90 games and make the playoffs. Famed baseball prediction site PECOTA predicted the Yankees to easily win the East

with a 97-65 record, or 81% odds to win the division, with the Rays at just 86 wins. USA Today had the Yankees at only 94 wins but another comfortable AL East title

with the Rays coming in at just 88 wins.

PECOTA was also high on the Mets as they had them winning the NL East rather easily as well

These are just projections however, you can’t make money off of what ifs, and predictions so we go to the line makers for that. The official lines have been released from Vegas and both are high on the locals. The Yankees sit second overall in all of baseball for wins posted with a huge 95 1/2 win total. That comes in 2nd to the Dodgers just unthinkable 104 posted total. The next AL team after the Yanks is the White Sox

at 90 wins and the next closest in the division is the Rays at 86 1/2.

As for the Mets, Vegas seems to like the PECOTA projections because they have been posted at 91 wins, tied with the Braves and tied for 4th overall. The projected 3rd place team would be the Nationals with just 84 wins, and the Mets would join the Dodgers, Padres, Braves and Cardinals in the playoffs.

It will be interesting to see if bettors buy into the Mets hype this year and see a mid 90’s win total for them or if they believe the hype train lifted that too high, and the Yankees might be in a familiar spot but with a revamped rotation we’ll see if bettors still buy into New York.

BY DOMINICK FORTE Besides subduing the demon Asmodeus in the Book of Tobit, Raphael the Archangel is credited with the defeat of the powerful demon Leviathan. A long, long time ago, when Lucifer’s Great Rebellion erupted and the forces of Satan faced off against the army of Michael’s Heavenly Host, Leviathan was one of the devil’s earliest and staunchest supporters. This demon is one of the seven Crown Princes of hell and the gatekeeper of the abyss.

As punishment for his defiant disloyalty to God, Leviathan had his divine nature and beauty transformed into a huge, draconic, she-serpent of the sea. She has been depicted as a dragon who reigns over the realms of the deep in concert with her male counterpart on earth, the land dragon Behemoth. Leviathan is described by mystics, church historians, and theologians, St. Thomas Aquinas among them, as the demon of envy.

Leviathan’s heart weighs within her like a boulder of granite and the monster is impervious to the fiercest weapons known to man.

Her underbelly is undaunted by the elements and any assault on it is futile. Since Leviathan had been blinded by pride in the angelic form, the only possible area of vulnerability is the eyes.

The thick oily water in which she lies is boiling. She arrogantly flaunts her aggressive power unflinchingly leaving darkness, death, and destruction in her wake. Leviathan’s rolling presence illuminates the water she inhabits and leaves the pollution and corruption of sin everywhere she moves.

God chose the archangel Raphael to do battle with this humongous maritime beast. Raphael is the patron saint of travel and healing.

He is not primarily a warrior.

Gulf War Syndrome

BY REV. FREDERICK MILLER. PH.D. The Persian Gulf War, known better as the Desert Storm, was the successful U.S.-Allied responses to Iraq’s attempt to overwhelm neighboring Kuwait. On August 2, 1990 , the Iraqi military conducted a 2-day campaign to annex Kuwait and claim the natural resources and land for Iraq. The initial operation was a resounding success, and the Iraq armed forces occupied the entire neighboring country as well as overrunning the majority of the Kuwait army. The invasion resulted in a seven month Iraqi occupation of Kuwait and many from the country fled to Saudi Arabia or Bahrain. In January 1991, our military joined a coalition to push out Saddam Hussein’s forces from Kuwait in Operation Desert Storm. We deployed approximately 694,550 military members in the Gulf War. While we had only 148 battle deaths and 467 suffering non-mortal wounds there were

The trick in dealing with dogs is similar to dealing with people for the very same reasons. Although all must be treated with respect that treatment must align with the personality and intelligence of the individual. Consequently the difficult part of training any dog is to understand their personality.

Sometimes it takes a professional to determine the motivation of a dog since their means of communication is obviously not as well understood as a person’s ability to communicate verbally and unfortunately people can hide their true feelings whereas dogs do not generally lie but can not make their feelings understood to their

As we continue our series on single motherhood, let’s focus on the widowed mother, and the unexpected trauma she will experience.

Keep your sense of humor and use it as often as possible. Laugh out loud to any outrageous questions!

Regardless of the circumstances of your partner’s death, you will be astounded at the inappropriate comments and questions. Tragedy often brings out the worst in people.

Remember to keep in mind:

THE DOS AND DON’TS FOR WIDOWED MOTHERS

Contribute nothing to the gossip mill. People often assume they have the “right to know.” Few will ask out of true concern.

Respect your own privacy. Expect to be asked about the size of your partner’s estate, how are you coping without a lover in your life, can you handle your money issues by yourself? Respond directly, saying these questions are a personal matter and you choose not to discuss them!

When in doubt, SAY NOTHING!!

DO make new happy memories together as a family. You cannot keep your home as a shrine to your late spouse and celebrate every holiday in his/her memory.

DO remember that there is a life to be had without your partner. Building that new life does not diminish the love you shared.

DON’T project too far into the future. Many things you are worried about today will never happen.

DO reassure your children that no angry thought or deed can cause someone to die. People die because they were sick, injured, or old, but never because of angry thoughts or heated words.

DON’T sentence yourself to death by putting up too many walls. While you are vulnerable to future pain, that also means you are alive.

DO let your children grieve. Avoid trying to distract them from their feelings. Grieving is a necessary part of life.

DO make fun. Your children and you need the simple pleasures of family life. Cuddle up together on the couch and watch a movie.

Make cookies. Take a walk to enjoy the sunshine.

DO treasure your memories of your spouse and allow your children to do the same.

DO be open to new opportunities and adventures. The single life is

DON’T be harsh with yourself if you feel only relief at your spouse’s death. If this is what you feel, you most likely have good reasons. Put the pain behind you and work toward a healthier, more satisfying life.

DON’T try to find an instant replacement or substitute spouse. A new man/woman will not cure the pain or fill the void of your spouse’s death. He/she may be a distraction for you now, but you still need to work through the process of mourning.

DON’T let the world take advantage of you. Beware of scams and get-richquick schemes. Know that there are individuals who prey on widows. They will try to win your heart to get to your money.
