Day of Reckoning for Cuomo Administration’s COVID Coverup

The day of reckoning is fast approaching for Gov. Cuomo to take responsibility for trying to cover up the thousands of COVID deaths caused by his tragic order to send virus patients into nursing homes.

Nationwide attention has focused on the governor—who even went as far as rush out a book in attempt to mislead the public—with elected officials and the families of victims calling for him to resign, and for him to be prosecuted.

The ball toward Cuomo’s removal started rolling in earnest when an investigation by Attorney General Letitia James revealed that more than 14,000 New Yorkers died in New York nursing homes, a far cry from the 7,000 or so admitted by Cuomo. The report was released after months of requests for the truth by elected officials, senior advocates and the families of those who lost loved ones due to Cuomo’s March 25 order that required nursing homes to admit COVID-positive patients.

Calls for the governor to step down escalated over the weekend as reports filtered out that his secretary, Melissa DeRosa, told a private meeting of state Democrat leaders that the administration withheld COVID

information to avoid scrutiny from the U.S. Department of Justice. She apologized for putting them in a difficult situation among worries that releasing the COVID data would give President Trump a political advantage. This, after a white-washed investigation by the Department of Health—ordered by Cuomo—found that nothing was amiss.

“After months of demanding that Gov. Cuomo come clean with New Yorkers, we find out he was more concerned about a federal investigation and playing politics than getting to the bottom of what went wrong and what we need to do to save lives in the future,” said Assemblyman Joe DeStefano, who has been at the forefront of the efforts to get the facts from the administration. “Again, the coverup is worse than the crime.”

Members of Congress from across the state signed a letter to acting Attorney General Robert Wilkinson requesting a federal investigation into Cuomo’s actions. “The Department of Justice needs to immediately open an Obstruction of Justice investigation into Governor Cuomo and his administration,” said Congressman Lee Zeldin. “It’s now being reported there has been a direct admission of

According to Section 62-A of Legislative Law, if a majority of members on a given committee sign a petition, authority is given for that committee to issue a subpoena for an individual to appear before that committee to answer questions.

There are seven members on the Assembly Oversight Committee, five Democrats and two Republicans.

Only two Democrat members are needed to be able to issue a subpoena to Dr. Zucker and compel him to answer questions following the nursing home report by the Attorney General.

Assemblywoman Jodi Giglio joined DeStefano and their state legislative colleagues in calling for bipartisan hearings with subpoena power to compel administration officials to testify. “The many months of the Cuomo administration hiding the facts from the public have come to an end,” Giglio said. “We now have the state attorney general, legislators from both sides of the isle and Congress asking the governor to get everything out in the open and take responsibility. He owes it to all New Yorkers to make sure something like this never happens again.”

“Through lawsuits, a legislative hearing, constant inquiries from families, media and lawmakers and an attorney general investigation, they refused to tell the full story. Only after the AG’s report confirmed that the department of health underreported nursing home deaths by 50 percent did the governor and his team provide information. Now is the time for accountability. The Legislature should hold bipartisan hearings, using subpoena power, and the Department of Justice should expand its efforts to look into what happened here. We have a duty to get answers for more than 14,000 families who lost loved ones due to highly questionable decisions and what has been an ongoing coverup.”

COVID-19 7-Day Average Positivity Rate Drops Below 4% for First Time Since November 30

Governor Andrew M. Cuomo announced on Saturday that New York State’s 7-day average COVID positivity rate dropped to 3.90 percent, the lowest since November 29. The 7-day average positivity rate is down 51 percent from the post-holiday peak in early January and it has declined for 36 consecutive days. Hospitalizations dropped to 6,888, the lowest number since Christmas Day. Hospitalizations are down by 916 this week, a 26 percent decline from the postholiday peak. The statewide positivity rate dropped to 3.46 percent, the lowest since November 25. New York City’s 7-day average positivity rate dropped to 4.63 percent, the lowest since Christmas Day and a decrease of 28 percent from the post-holiday peak.

Eleven additional cases of the UK variant were identified in New York State. Eight were in New York City, two were in Suffolk County and one was in Rockland County, that county’s first case. To date, there are 70 known cases of the variant in New York City and in the following counties: Saratoga, Warren, Onondaga, Nassau, Suffolk, Westchester, Rockland, Ulster, Essex, Jefferson, Tompkins, Allegany and Niagara.

“Hospitalization and infection rates are continuing to fall statewide and

win this war against COVID once and for all, we must keep driving down these rates, as well as to get as many shots into arms as possible. 11 New UK Strain Cases in New York State

The East End lawmakers were joined by local elected officials, environmental advocates, and area stakeholders for the event.

“Although I’ve attended the Environmental Roundtable for many years, this is my first year hosting this event and I’m truly honored to carry on this critically important discussion.

The feedback from this event helps to shape our legislative priorities, enabling us to better protect the local environment and our natural resources here on the East End,” said Senator Anthony Palumbo. “We must continue to make environmental protection a priority throughout this year’s Legislative Session and fight to ensure our environmental concerns are kept at the forefront. These issues are too important for the region and the health of our community.”

During the roundtable discussion, panelist and participants spoke about several key issues including fully funding the State’s Environmental Protection Fund (EPF), greater oversight to protect local communities from the impact of sand mining, protecting the region’s drinking water from PFOA/PFOS and 1,4 Dioxins, solid waste disposal, renewable energy, land conservation and protecting the region’s shorelines and waterways.

“Today’s Environmental Roundtable discussion was a great success and will help to shape this year’s legislative agenda,” said Senator Palumbo. “I am truly grateful to everyone who participated and for sharing their knowledge and expertise on a host of issues that are of critical importance to the local environment and the health of residents.”

Cuomo Announces Over 2.1 Million Vaccine Doses Administered As of February 7th, New York’s Health Care Distribution Sites Have Administered 87% of the Total First Doses Received from Federal Government Vaccine Dashboard Will Update Daily to Provide Updates on the State’s Vaccine Program; Go to ny.gov/vaccinetracker; Dashboard Now Includes Demographic Data Governor Andrew M. Cuomo announced the state has administered over 2,136,209 vaccine doses through the state’s vaccination program. The total week 8 federal allocation of vaccine delivery to providers will be complete today. As of February 7th, New York’s health care distribution sites have received 1,874,975 first doses and already administered 87 percent 1,627,191 first dose vaccinations and 76 percent of first and second doses.

Delivery of the week 9 allocation from the federal government begins mid-week.

“Our singular focus right now is getting vaccines into arms and the daily numbers continue to demonstrate we are doing that job quickly and effectively, as we have administered over 2.1 million doses so far,” Governor Cuomo said. “We have the operational capacity to do much more and the only limiting factor is lack of supply.

But I am hopeful because we now have a partner in the White House who is working to increase supply to states, and we will continue to work hand in glove with them to get every single New Yorker vaccinated as fast as possible.”

Approximately 7 million New Yorkers are currently eligible to receive the vaccine.

The federal government has increased the weekly supply by more than 20 percent over the next three weeks, but New York’s vast distribution network and large population of eligible individuals still far exceed the supply coming from the federal government.

Due to limited supply, New Yorkers are encouraged to remain patient and are advised not to show up at vaccination sites without an appointment.

Billy draws her inspiration from her Sioux and Cherokee ancestry and tries to picture and feel the emotions of others in her art. She loves to create landscapes and puts positivity and happiness into all of her designs. Ever since she has picked up a pencil, she has immensely enjoyed creative native art

This tradition dates back to at least the 1980s and is one of the few remaining Long Island schools to do this. This year’s yearbook cover will be the first with a matte finish.

In addition to winning this year’s yearbook cover design, Billy won an award last year at the Parrish Art Museum and Student Exhibition.

For this cover design competition each year, students are tasked with writing a description of their cover proposal and how it incorporates the theme for the school year. Students create the work, which is then displayed for judging by students in AP art & portfolio classes, high school art teachers and administrators.

Billy has attended William Floyd schools kindergarten through 12th grade including Tangier Smith Elementary School, William Paca Middle School and now William Floyd High School.

Brookhaven Industrial Development Agency Closes 8 Projects in 2020 with $352M Invested in New Construction, Renovation & Equipping of Facilities

More than 3,040 jobs created & retained, including construction For the Brookhaven Town Industrial Development Agency (IDA) and the Local Development Corporation (LDC), 2020 remained robust, surpassing 2019’s numbers, as businesses committed to invest $352 million in projects in the Town of Brookhaven that will result in the creation and retention of 3,042 jobs.

The Brookhaven IDA closed several economic development projects, most of them on behalf of various manufacturers and residential housing developments.

“As the nation continues to endure the devastation caused by the COVID-19 pandemic and its economic fallout, the IDA continued to attract businesses and projects that will help to strengthen our Town’s economy,” said Frederick C. Braun III, chairman of the Brookhaven IDA. “These job-creating projects will also help to provide much-needed housing opportunities for our workforce.”

Major Brookhaven IDA projects closed during 2020 include: AE-Town Hall Solar 2 - This package of economic incentives and a longterm lease agreement with AE-Town Hall Solar 2, LLC, will apply to the construction of a $2.1 million, 960 kw solar array, to include over 2,500, 375watt rooftop solar panels. AE-Town Hall Solar 2 has a power purchase agreement with PSEG-L.I. The project will continue to fortify the Town’s power systems in a sustainable way for the future.

Brightview Port Jefferson - This $80.4 million project by Brightview

Senior Living will construct a 170-unit senior living community to be located on 8.7 acres in Port Jefferson Station.

Brightview Port Jefferson, will provide a continuum of housing options, including independent living, assisted living and an Alzheimer/Memory care unit. The three-story structure will be located on Rt. 112 in Port Jefferson Station and provide 60 jobs.

Bellport Residences - This $31 million project by D&F Bellport Residences, LLC, for the construction of Gleneagle Green will build 70 units of residential apartments in the Hamlet of North Bellport. Bellport Residences, LLC is located in a federally designated economic opportunity zone and is a 100% workforce housing project. The project will help to meet the demand for affordable rental housing for Long Islanders.

On the Common Rocky Point The $7.7 million project by this senior residential development company will build 38 apartments for senior citizens and 1,200 square feet of office space.

The development will be built at Prince and King Roads in Rocky Point, the former blighted site of Thurber Lumber Company.

Orbit Bloom / DG Fuel Cell - Orbit Bloom will be developing 1.5 acres of vacant property in Medford for the installation of a fuel cell, which is similar to a battery. Fuel cells convert fuel into electricity through an electro-chemical process that does not use combustion, resulting in clean, reliable and affordable energy. This $33 million project will

generate six megawatts of electricity, enough to power 600 homes.

Interstate Mechanical - Interstate Mechanical Services’ $4.5 million project will renovate an existing building located at 355 Sills Road in Yaphank.

The company will be expanding and relocating to the Town of Brookhaven.

This project falls under the Brookhaven IDA Adaptive Reuse Policy. Interstate Mechanical Services is a fabricator of pipes for mechanical equipment on Long Island and supplies contractors and suppliers.

Brookhaven LDC Projects closed during 2020 include: Long Island Community Hospital / BMH- This $73.5 million project will allow the hospital to redeem and refinance prior debt and make improvements to its 35-acre main campus located 101 Hospital Road, Patchogue. The hospital employs 2,300 people in the Town of Brookhaven.

Jefferson’s Ferry-This $120 million expansion project of Jefferson’s Ferry, an active adult community for seniors 62 years of age and over, will result in the addition of 75 new, independent-living apartments and cottages; the renovation and beatifying of portions of the common areas and the addition of a new building specially designed for approximately 20 assisted living memory care suites, adding a new wing for physical fitness, health and wellness and rehabilitation services. The new expansion project will increase the number of employees at Jefferson’s Ferry by 43, and retain 173 positions.

Bellport Man Pleads Guilty in Connection with 2019 Fatal Motor Vehicle Crash in Middle Island Suffolk County District Attorney Timothy D. Sini announced the guilty plea of a Bellport man in connection with a fatal motor vehicle crash in Middle Island on Feb. 9, 2019.

“This was a tragic incident; three people lost their lives because of the reckless, dangerous actions of the defendant,” District Attorney Sini said. “Today’s conviction holds him responsible for those deaths and provides justice for the victims and their families.”

Nahriek Belford, 19, pleaded guilty today to Assault in the First Degree, a B violent felony; two counts of Manslaughter in the Second Degree, a C felony; and Unlawful Fleeing of a Police Officer in the First Degree, a D felony.

At approximately 11:45 p.m. on Feb.

9, 2019, Belford, while driving a 2015 Nissan Rogue that had been reported stolen two days prior, was observed by a Suffolk County Police officer failing to stop at a stop sign at the intersection of Yaphank Avenue and Main Street in Yaphank. The officer attempted to initiate a traffic stop.

Belford fled from the police officer at a high rate of speed, driving recklessly through several residential neighborhoods in an attempt to evade the officer.

At approximately 11:50 p.m., as Belford was traveling westbound on Middle Country Road/Route 25 in Middle Island, he struck a 2009 Honda CRV that was attempting to make a left turn onto Birchwood Park Drive.

Belford was driving at a speed of 106 mph immediately prior to the crash.

The force of the impact caused the Honda to be cut in half.

The passengers in the Honda, Jerome Weingarten, 74, and his wife, Randee Weingarten, 71, of Middle Island, were both pronounced dead at the scene by a physician assistant from the Office of the Suffolk County Medical Examiner.

Belford’s brother, Angelo Belford, 19, of Bellport, who was a passenger in the Nissan, was also pronounced dead at the scene.

Belford is scheduled to be sentenced

by Suffolk County Supreme Court Justice Fernando Camacho on March 25. He is being represented by the Legal Aid Society.

This case is being prosecuted by Jacob Delauter, of the Vehicular Crime Bureau.

BY KARL GROSSMAN Suffolk County Sheriff Errol D. Toulon, Jr., who was elected in 2017 and began serving in 2018, has brought a host of reforms and new programs to the Sheriff’s Office.

The position of Suffolk sheriff goes way back—to 1683. It’s one of the oldest law enforcement posts in the County.

Sheriff Toulon is the 67th person to hold it.

Sheriff Toulon is first AfricanAmerican to have been elected to a nonjudicial countywide office in the history of Suffolk County. Earlier, he ran for the Suffolk Legislature (and there were some calls to police about a black man going door-to-door when he campaigned).

The Sheriff’s Office is a big operation—with 1,200 employees, 275 of them deputy sheriffs. It operates two correctional facilities, one in Riverhead and one in Yaphank.

Sheriff Toulon has long experience.

He spent 22 years as a uniformed member of New York City’s Department of Corrections at Riker’s Island, rising to the rank of captain, and

then was named deputy commissioner of operations for the department. His father had been a warden at Riker’s.

A Lake Grove resident, Sheriff Toulon in 2012 became assistant deputy Suffolk County executive for public safety.

He was raised in The Bronx (for two years he was a batboy for the New York Yankees).

He has overcome serious health problems: beating Hodgkin’s lymphoma in 1996 and pancreatic cancer in 2003.

Senate paid tribute with a resolution stating: “The confederation of the original 13 colonies into one republic was influenced by the political system developed by the Iroquois Confederacy, as were many of the democratic principles which were incorporated into the constitution itself.”

The Iroquois tribes included the Seneca, Onondaga, Oneida, and Cayuga which were the names of the dorms at Oswego College where I went to school.

Sheriff Toulon has been extremely concerned about gang activity in the county, notably because Suffolk, he notes, has the nation’s “third largest” M-13 gang. He journeyed to El Salvador to meet with officials there and develop a “partnership” with its government in combatting gangs. The Sheriff’s Office teaches Suffolk students about gangs through the national Gang Resistance Education and Training program.

He has instituted a Senior Rehabilitation Pod Program, also believed to be the first program of its kind in the country, through which inmates over 50 are separated from younger inmates and provided programs specifically geared for them.

He assembled a task force named Deconstructing the Prison Pipeline to study the causes of and seek to better deal with of juvenile delinquency.

For young inmates there is a program titled Choose Your Path which offers vocational training, schooling, counseling, pre-release and

post-release transitional services, and mental health support. They spend 40 hours a week in the program.

And there are more.

Sheriff Toulon has coordinated closely with such entities in the county as BOCES, the Suffolk Department of Labor, the School of Social Welfare at Stony Brook University and the Suffolk Department of Health Services.

Among his key goals are seeking “to get to kids before they get to me” and “to work with persons incarcerated so they can change their lives….We don’t give up on anybody.”

Suffolk Legislator Bridget Fleming of Noyac, with background also in the criminal justice system in New York City—for years she was an assistant district attorney in the Manhattan DA’s office—describes Sheriff Toulon as a “reform superstar.” Vice chair of the Suffolk County Public Safety Task Force, she says that in “thoughtfulness and compassion, he is truly a visionary” and “very extraordinary in the history of corrections in Suffolk County.”

me, especially since modern genetic research has made some startling conclusions. Scientists can confirm that around 19,000 years ago, the first Americans migrated from Eurasia via Beringia, a land bridge which connected Siberia with Alaska across what is now the Bering Strait. The ancient Beringians were isolated for more than

7,000 years before spreading south to inhabit the continent eons before Columbus. All Native Americans can trace their DNA to this group.

When he travelled through Long Island, Thomas Jefferson visited with the Indians and compiled a dictionary of the Unkechaug language.

Sadly, this information was lost in a robbery. There’s no telling how the President’s work would have enhanced our understanding of these original Americans.

A notable Indian who deserves more credit for his place in history was Ely Parker, a Seneca of the Iroquois Confederacy born in western New York in 1828. He trained as a civil engineer and at age 29, went to work with the Treasury Department in Illinois. It was here that his life took a fateful turn when he met an ex-army officer named Ulysses S. Grant who was working as a clerk in his father’s store. They became friends and when the Civil War broke out, Grant went to serve with the Union Army and Parker was denied a commission because he was an Indian. He appealed to Secretary of State William Seward and was told the conflict was “an affair between White

men” that “would be settled without any Indian aid.”

Eventually, with Grant’s endorsement, Parker was accepted for service and became the general’s Military Secretary. He rose to the rank of Brigadier General and was credited with saving Grant’s life during the Wilderness Campaign. It was at Appomattox Courthouse where Parker became part of history during a meeting between Grant and his Confederate adversary, Robert E. Lee. Grant offered his terms for surrender and Lee accepted. Now, all that remained to end the bloody conflict was for the agreement to be committed to writing. Grant turned to his senior adjutant general, Theodore Bowers, to put the terms to ink. The adjutant’s hands were shaking so much that he had to start over a few times, going through several sheets of paper. So, Grant turned to Parker who completed the task with alacrity.

At the conclusion of the meeting, Lee shook Parker’s hand stating, “I’m glad to see one real American here,” to which Parker replied, “We are all Americans.”

BY TOM BARTON Year after year one thing is constant in college basketball and that is that the ACC is among the top conferences in America.

Heading into March we usually have a few teams battling to stay inside the top 10, with quite a few inside the top 25. The ACC is known as the gauntlet and as the tournament approaches you can feel comfortable knowing that the ACC teams are battle tested and should go deep into the field of 64.

I honestly can’t even remember not placing an ACC team out of the Final Four when filling out my brackets.

This year is completely different and we have to be cautious. As March gets nearer and nearer you will begin to hear some hype on the ACC once again, but make no

mistake this is not the conference of the past. I no longer feel confident in the mid range teams, but even the big boys didn’t have to go through the grueling schedule, so we have to evaluate them differently as well.

Right at the top we have Virginia, which we have had for years with coach Bennett at the helm. The Cavs are the lone team who can make a serious title run this season and are the only team who have really been able to stay inside the top 10 this year, even if it is barely inside. The Cavs once again have an excellent defense and certainly can make some noise deep into March, but how deep? They are facing much lower caliber teams than they are used to and comparing them to a Baylor or Gonzaga right now seems foolish.

BY DON STERLING Many young children do not have the ability to understand that they can, inadvertently and without intent, frighten some dogs. How? By chasing the dog because it’s “fun”, by picking the dog up and holding it too tightly, by disturbing a dog while it is asleep.

An old wives tale states “leave a sleeping dog lie” with good cause because nature will often make a sleeping dog respond, without forethought or intent, awaken aggressively to protect itself from a predator. Unfortunately a lack of knowledge or supervision can result in heartbreak for both the child as well as the parents because an automatic bite can result in the loss of the dog. Parents should teach their children to respect the rights of their dog.

As a member of the Suffolk County Police Department’s canine unit I had both weapons and dogs in my home. My

children, from a very young age, were taught not to touch my guns or to bother any of my dogs of which I had three over my twenty year career. My first dog loved my children and would actively play with them. My second dog was not aggressive but tended to be aloof and choose his moments when he would interact with the children usually to chase a ball.

My third dog was a combination of the first two, the point being that every dog is different and each and every dog’s personality must be recognized and respected.

Parents know their own children and “rambunctious” children can, again, without intent, frighten some dogs, even “friendly” dogs and they must be aware of the personality of both their dog and their children and supply proper common sense in their supervision. Some breeds can be inherently intolerant. That

is not to say vicious but simply intolerant of perceived abuse not just by a child but of anyone. It is not the dog’s fault, just a fact of

life. It is my personal belief that teaching a child to respect the rights of any animal is a critical step in teaching them the rights

of all people and there is no better time or way than with their own dog.

When should a Charitable Remainder Trust be beneficiary of an IRA?

The Setting E v e r y C o m mu n i t y Up for Retirement Enhancement (“SECURE”) Act became effective on January 1, 2020.

While the Act was aimed at improving retirement savings, there is a negative change which effects those who inherit retirement accounts from the original participant.

Prior to SECURE, designated beneficiaries of retirement accounts could take required minimum distributions from the account over their life expectancy. This allowed for another lifetime of deferred income tax payments and increased growth.

After SECURE, with few exceptions, beneficiaries will now have to liquidate an inherited retirement account within ten (10) years. For those

with large IRAs and not many beneficiaries, this equates to a big tax bite! Accordingly, some are looking for ways to structure the distribution of their retirement account after death in a more tax efficient way. Additionally, some people have serious concerns that a particular beneficiary may not have the self-control (due to spending habits or addictions) to make the inheritance last their lifetime.

A charitable remainder trust (CRT) is an irrevocable trust that distributes a certain percentage of the trust property to the trust’s lifetime beneficiaries either for their life or for a term of up to 20 years.

CRTs are most often structured as Charitable Remainder Unitrusts (CRUTs) where the trust document sets forth a certain percentage that will be distributed to the beneficiary

for the term of the trust.

The CRUT must provide that the charity receives ten percent (10%) of the present value of the bequest at the death of the participant. So for the individual beneficiary with a shorter life expectancy, the CRUT can pay out an income stream over the course of their lifetime, much like the old stretch IRA. If the beneficiary is younger, the trust would need to be for a term of years in order to comply with the 10% rule (up to a maximum of 20). At the end of the term, the lifetime beneficiaries’ interest terminates, and the balance of the trust property is paid to charity of the Grantor’s choosing.

Why are Charitable Remainder Trusts becoming popular after SECURE? Because these types of trusts are income tax exempt.

Accordingly, if you name your Charitable Remainder Trust as the beneficiary of your IRA, at your death, your estate receives a charitable deduction for the portion that is attributable to the charity. Only when your beneficiary receives a distribution from the trust, will the income portion of the distribution be subject to income tax.

An example of how the CRUT would work is as follows: The CRUT is named as the beneficiary of an IRA with $2 million as of the death of the participant. The CRUT cashes out the IRA incometax-free, then pays a 5% income interest to the decedent’s chosen beneficiary, in this case $100,000 per year. Over time, the distribution may fluctuate as the investments increase or decrease in value. However, the income stream lasts for

their life, and not just 10 years like it would if you named that beneficiary directly on the IRA. Essentially, this reinstates the lifetime income stream that used to be available for beneficiaries of retirement accounts. At the death of the beneficiary, the remaining trust assets would be distributed to the charity.

Some negatives with naming a CRT as the beneficiary are that the beneficiary is limited to an income stream. If they were named as a beneficiary on the IRA directly, they could remove as much as they would like, although every penny is taxable as ordinary income.

The calculation on whether or not the CRT provides more in the hands of the beneficiary is going to depend on may things, such as how long they live and how much the assets grow. The longer the term of the trust and

the larger the trust assets, the more income the beneficiary receives. Thought of another way though, even if they receive roughly the same, there is a huge charitable gift at the end of their life as well which not only results in a charitable deduction, but fulfillment of goodwill.

The desire to name a CRT as the beneficiary of a retirement account definitely has more appeal than ever after the SECURE Act, but like anything else in the estate planning arena, it’s not a one-size fits all.

If you have retirement accounts and are charitably inclined, speak to your estate planning attorney to see if this is the right strategy for you.

The National Guard has a long history of serving our country. It started as a militia back in 1636. T he origin of the term “National Guard was first used by militia units in 1824 by unit in New York that later became the famed 7th Regiment. The National Defense Act of 1916 mandated the use of “National Guard” as the title for all organized militia. In January, 2013 President Barack Obama signed into law House Bill 1339, which designated Salem Massachusetts as the official birthplace of the National Guard.

The militia (National Guard) served in most of our wars from the American Revolution to Afghanistan. They also continue to carry out in their role to aid in civil disturbance, control and other emergencies and natural disasters in the country. Regardless of how much time they devoted to honorably supporting the Armed Forces, how many hours of training or deployments

they experienced, there always remained a delineation line between full time soldiers and reservists.

The National Guard is composed of military members in units of each state and territory in the United States. Members are citizen-soldiers who train, close to home, typically maintaining civilian jobs during the work week. The Guard is under the dual control from state to federal government, and mobilizes to protect U.S. domestic interests in times of conflict or natural disaster. Members train one weekend a month and two weeks a year. Members may be deployed internationally alongside full-time troops as needed. However, they were not considered veterans unless they served 180 days of active duty. In general, active service means full-time service, other than active duty for training, as a commissioned officer of the Public Health Service; or as a commissioned officer of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric

The National Guard Our Invisible Veterans Administration or its predecessors. A recent law passed in December 2016, gives official veteran status to National Guard members who served 20 years or more. In addition many veterans upon

their discharge from active duty join the National Guard. Today’s National Guard consists of approximately 384,422 troops.

Even though the government now fully recognizes National Guard members filling the conditions as veterans the general public does not understand this. They go as a unit and return as a National Guard unit. Let’s change that and refer to those qualified to be called veterans. An easy way to do this is to thank all the National Guard members for their service.

Expecting to soon die, the blinded old Tobit sends his son Tobias to Medina to collect an old debt. The money would be an inheritance for Tobias. Travel in those days was treacherous with muggers, wild animals, and unfamiliar terrain so Tobias hires a guide named Azariah who is experienced and familiar with the region. Azariah is actually Raphael in disguise.

On the way to Medina, the duo camp on the banks of the Tigris River. A large fish jumps from the water and attacks Tobias. After the fish is subdued Azariah tells Tobias to split it open, and remove the gall, heart, and liver to be used

Tobias returns to Nineveh with his bride Sarah. Following Raphael’s directions, he rubs the oil from the fish gall onto Tobit’s eyelids. With Tobit cured

of his blindness, the stage is set for a gala wedding feast. The newlyweds offer Raphael, whom they still think is Azariah, half of the inheritance. Raphael declines and slips away during the festival.

Tobit asks for Azariah. He is disappointed because he didn’t get a chance to thank the mysterious guide.

Returning home to God Raphael chants, “High Hosanna, Awayyyy!!!!” The music ministry led by Gabriel fills the heavens with the magnificent angelic music of the William Tell Overture.
