Bipartisan Group of Federal, State, County, Town and Village Elected Officials Join Forces to Oppose Gov. Hochul’s Plan to Eliminate Single Family Neighborhoods
Presiding Officer Kevin McCaffrey and elected officials from various levels of government and both major political parties joined together to state their vehement and well-reasoned objection to Governor Kathy Hochul’s plans to force apartments into every single family home on every street in every New York neighborhood. The proposal is to allow- as of right- an apartment in every single family home’s garage, basement, second floor or rear yard shed/garage. The Governor’s proposed legislation would usurp the roles of locally elected Town and Village Officials who control zoning and effectively eliminate single family zoning. Gov. Hochul’s plan mandates that at least one “second” unit of living quarters must be permitted on lots that would otherwise be single-family home zoning. Doing so would strain municipal resources, overcrowd streets and schools, reduce property values and harm suburban quality of life. Under the radical plan, the state would take away zoning control from locally elected governments, eliminating residents’ ability to voice objections to new apartments. The bill also prohibits the imposition
of parking requirements, resulting in cars clogging residential streets. Long Island, by and large, already allows for accessory dwelling units. Each of the municipalities that allow ADUs, have restrictions to ensure proper zoning and prevent overcrowding and overdevelopment in their community. The proposal does not address any issues of taxation on Long Island, one of the most overburdened regions in the nation. Currently, many Building Permit applications that increase the number of bedrooms in a dwelling require the approval of the Suffolk County Health Department. At no point in the proposed legislation does it address the fact that the Health Department determines the appropriate amount of persons residing at a home that is utilizing cesspools. Over seventy-five percent of Suffolk County is unsewered. A mass expansion of ADUs will result in a deterioration in the water quality here on Long Island. Long Island officials are acutely aware of the affordable housing crisis here in New York State, but they unanimously agree that this is
not the way to go. Alternatives, like transit-oriented development will create housing in areas that enable commuters to get to their jobs, while creating a new cheaper housing option. Presiding officer McCaffrey said, “As a former Village Trustee for 24 years, I understand that a Village or Town’s zoning decisions are the most impactful ones they’ll make. Throughout the state, our residents rely on these elected officials to make decisions which comport with local residents’ expectations. Governor Hochul’s one-size fits all approach to zoning would replace those elected official’s judgment with her own and, in turn, would destroy the quality of life that so many of us hold dear here in the suburbs of Long Island. So many families chose to move here because of the simple, quiet, and single-family home neighborhoods that are the inspiration for so many suburbs throughout the nation. The Governor’s proposal will destroy all that within just a few years by turning Suffolk County into the 7th borough of New York City.” Legislator Stephanie Bontempi said, “As someone who is an environmentalist, supporter of local control and values the quality of life here in Suffolk County, I cannot overstate how misguided the governor’s zoning ideas are. Long Island has an extremely fragile ecosystem, a large part of which involves our groundwater system. A zoning framework that essentially allows for unlimited accessory apartments or additional dwellings in backyards will spell nothing but disaster for our infrastructure and precious natural resources. leaders by working together in unity to each create an individual part of the mural that ultimately becomes a whole. Participating students Keira Bree, Katarina Dietz, Julia Faulkner, Katie Giusto, Adrianna Greco, Molly Johnson, Abigail McCutchan, Cassidy McCutchan, Heather Moran, Katie Mueller, Carin Murray, Ellie Perez, Sophia Raguso, Sophie Rambelle, Hailey Reilley and Reagan Walsh each created a different panel in a different style which fit together to create the beautiful mural. At the completion of the project, the mural will be displayed within the school building, then displayed in a public gallery, then auctioned off to support East End Arts’s scholarship fund for art and music students in need.

Reinstate Property Tax Rebate Program Dear Editor,
William Floyd High School Bowling Rolls into County Championships for 12th Consecutive Year The William Floyd varsity bowling team has secured a spot in the county championship for the 12th consecutive season! The Colonials, under the leadership of Coach James Healey, finished their regular season with a second-place finish in League II (12-4). The county championship is scheduled for Saturday, February 12, at Bowlero in Sayville.
In 2019, the Democrat led Majority’s in Albany eliminated the Property Tax Rebate Program that was initially advanced by the Senate Republicans. Often referred to as “rebate checks,” the Program provided substantive property tax relief to low and middle income families and seniors across the State. Suffolk County saw some of the highest rebates in the State, averaging around $1,000. When I campaigned in 2020, one of my number one priorities was to restore your property tax rebate checks. Restoring this critical Program was something I heard time and again from my constituents, and in fulfilling my campaign promise, the first bill I introduced was S.4739 that restored the Program statewide. The Program is expensive, costing well over $1 billion when first advanced. And as we all know, prior to the Pandemic and before Federal stimulus funds, the State was facing a multi-billion dollar deficit. Without Federal stimulus funds, then-Governor Cuomo indicated that we would need to make 20% cuts across the board: healthcare, education, infrastructure—everything. Fortunately, the State wound up receiving billions from the Federal government and, as a result of much better than expected revenues, New York is now flush with a multi-billion dollar surplus.
This season, three of five starters earned All-League honors. Senior Juan Madera will graduate William Floyd with a plethora of awards including four consecutive seasons of All-League honors and two superior scores awards (game of 280+). Juan finished the season with an average of 205 (third overall for League II) and a high series of 701 (sixth overall in League II). Juan finishes his career at William Floyd with a massive 138 total individual wins and a win percentage of 73% since joining the team as a seventh grader.
300-game this season for the Colonials earning him USBC (United States Bowling Congress) honors. Joseph Tagliamonte also earned All-League accolades this year with an average of 194, a high game of 268 and finished with an impressive individual record of 36 wins and 12 losses.
Alex Ramoska earned All-League honors for a fourth consecutive season, finishing with a 214-average (second overall in League II) and high series of 727 (fourth overall in League II). Ramoska also threw his first perfect

Brian Hodder, Colin Smith, Janelle Ramoska and Thomas Navins provide future prospects to help assure that the Colonials stay atop League II moving into next season. Coach Healey has a record of 57 wins and 13 losses since he started coaching the Colonials, helping the team solidify its reputation as one of the top teams in Suffolk County. There is no better time than now to reinstate this program to help struggling Long Island property owners. Governor Hochul recently announced her State of the State Address and followed it up with State Budget presentation on January 18. In it, she proposed a $2.2 billion rebate program, mirrored off the original Program but capping those eligible at incomes under $250,000 (the bill I support and carry would continue the original Program, which provided this benefit to all STAR-eligible recipients). While there are many proposals the Governor has advanced which I oppose, I strongly support her efforts here. It is imperative that the Democrat Majority’s approve this proposal in this year’s budget. COUNTY The COVID-19 pandemic has increased the amount of scams that we are all experiencing. The most vulnerable population is being hit the hardest – our seniors. One of the many scams that are affecting our over 55 population involves prepaid gift cards. These Scammers are calling, texting or emailing asking the victims to purchase specific gift cards, scratch the security code off the back and sending them the information. These scammers could be claiming it is to pay for a PayPal debt that is outstanding, an unpaid phone or internet bill and many other variations of needing to pay a debt. They almost always give you a very short deadline to forward them the “payment” so you act fast and don’t have time to inform others on this interaction. Here are 5 things to keep in mind the next time you receive an unsolicited text, call or email that is demanding payment for unpaid bills: 1. Is the message relevant to you? For example they may say you owe money for an

outstanding bill. Go back into your records and verify that you paid this bill or if you recently purchased something using this card. 2. Do NOT tap links that are attached to these messages – most text message scams include a link, and usually the URL doesn’t match with the company name. 3. Pay attention to grammatical – a large number of scams originate in other countries, as a result scammers make spelling or grammar errors
that should be easily identified. 4. Do NOT trust personalized messages – personalization can lead some to believe a message is genuine, data breaches are common, allowing scammers to piece together information that make them appear more legitimate. 5. Suspect it is real? – contact the company directly. Make sure you ask them to verify if there is an outstanding balance and the last time you made a payment. Alert them that you were contacted by an
individual to send payment to them. They will be able to advise you if this individual is in fact with this company. Be careful and be skeptical of any text messages, phone calls or emails you receive that aren’t from friends or acquaintances. During these times it is vital we stay vigilant against such scams. Legislator Mazzarella Thanks Hero Cops for Saving Newborn Baby Legislator Jim Mazzarella recently had the opportunity to recognize two heroic Police Officers from Suffolk County’s Seventh Precinct whose actions while responding to an emergency helped save the life of a newborn. On Friday January 28, Police Officers Alexander Hendrickson and Cory Banwaree responded to a 911 call for a woman who was alone in her home and was about to give birth. By the time the Officers arrived at the home, the woman had given birth to a baby girl named Lily. Both Officers immediately jumped into action to help the mother and her newborn child when they noticed something was wrong because the baby was not crying. Officer Banwaree retrieved blankets and all other necessities, while Officer Hendrickson cleared the baby’s airway, turned her over and patted on her back until she began to cry. A Ridge Fire District Ambulance then transported both the mother

PO Banwaree has been on patrol with the Seventh Precinct for the last 5 years and has been previously recognized for his hard work and dedication to the community and the Police Department. PO Hendrickson has been on patrol with the Seventh Precinct for 3 years and was recently transferred to the Community Support Unit. “I am always honored to recognize our brave men and women in law enforcement,” stated Mazzarella. “I would like to thank all of the command staff and Officers at the Seventh Precinct for everything that they do for our community and our residents on a daily basis. I would also like to thank the fine volunteers of the Ridge Fire Department for their speedy response. Redistricting Commission Initiatives Failed Last Year

Back 15 years ago Suffolk County became the first county in New York State to enact a law to have reapportionment—the word redistricting is now favored—done in a non-partisan manner. “A Local Law to Ensure a Non-Partisan, Fair and Objective Process by Which Legislative Districts are Reapportioned,” was the title of the 2007 measure.
Under the Suffolk law, following the national census a Reapportionment Commission is to be established. The majority and minority leaders of the Suffolk Legislature are to evenly divide filling it with four retired judges, two representatives from groups “committed to the principles of voters’ rights” and two from “publicly recognized minority organizations.” (A component historically of gerrymandering has been racial and ethnic minorities being spread among districts to preclude election of a minority person.)
It was authored by then Suffolk County Executive Steve Levy who in his prior positions as county legislator and State Assembly member was familiar with—and long-bothered by—redistricting being a highly partisan undertaking.
Levy tried with a county legislator a decade earlier to get a similar measure passed but it got nowhere. With clout as Suffolk County executive, he was able to resurrect it and seek a bipartisan coalition on the legislature to pass it.
Congressional districts and state and county legislative districts are redrawn every 10 years following the decennial national census which produces new population figures. Redistricting done to favor a political party is a sorry U.S. tradition first given the name gerrymandering in 1812. The word was coined by the Boston-Gazette to describe reapportionment under a Massachusetts governor named Elbridge Gerry. The “mandering” part came from a State Senate district that looked like a salamander.
He held a press conference in 2011, the year the Suffolk law took effect, along with then New York City Mayor Ed Koch who had been crusading for nonpartisan redistricting statewide. That’s another component of ger r y ma nder i ng— cont i nu i ng throughout the U.S. Indeed, a lead story on Page 1 of The New York Times last week was headlined: “New Voting Maps Erase Competitive House Seats.” The February 7th article began: “The number of competitive congressional districts is on track to
dive near—and possibly below—the lowest level in at least three decades, as Republicans and Democrats draw new political maps designed to ensure that the vast majority of House races are over before the general election starts.” It said “mapmakers are on pace to draw fewer than 40 seats—out of 435— that are considered competitive.” This is a reason cited in the push for term limits. In 2014, voters in New York passed a constitutional amendment creating a 10-member New York State Independent Redistricting Commission. But the commission
This year, following a Republican majority taking control of the Suffolk Legislature, a deal was struck between Democratic County Executive Steve Bellone and the legislature’s new presiding officer, GOPer Kevin McCaffrey, to revive Suffolk’s Reapportionment Commission and have it come up with a plan for the 18 county legislative districts in coming months. Meanwhile, the new state redistricting map is moving forward although there’s a Republican lawsuit challenging it. And for Suffolk County, it’s salamander time for House seats. As the dust is still settling from the Super Bowl we just experienced, there is no rest for the sports fan, and certainly not for a sports bettor. Before the Big Game was even played, sports books around the country had already posted their odds for next year’s Super Bowl. To the right are the opening odds. A few quick observations jump right off the page at you. First and foremost is the Denver Broncos odds. They are listed as the 4th lowest odds to win the 2023 Championship. That is behind the Super Bowl representatives from the AFC Bengals, the team they beat in that championship game, the Chiefs, and the team who was a coin flip away in the Bills. They are tied with the #1 overall seed Titans. So the question is then why are the Broncos odds listed at that number? Plain and simple, the books are protecting themselves against Aaron Rodgers coming aboard and shifting the odds drastically. Another quick glance brings up questions regarding the Green Bay Packers. These are solid odds for the #1 overall NFC seed if Rodgers

and Adams returns, but that is highly unlikely. Making this one of the worst bets on the board. Moving down the list the Tampa Bay Bucs without Tom Brady, and probably a slew of other offensive players looks like a bad bet, even at 25:1 odds. New Orleans will have to replace their legendary head coach, they have a RB playing QB and Alvin Kamara is now in all sorts of legal issues. And then there are the Steelers and Raiders. Both of which made the playoffs, and both

Fantasy baseball players come up in disparate groups. Sometimes all of the prospects are middle infielders. At other times there is a wealth of good 1st baseman. At the present time, there is an unusual concentration of good catchers on the way up to The Show. At other times, the pendulum swings into starting pitchers and at other times there is a surplus of high heat late inning relief closer candidates. One of the most common things that happens is that the best athletes coming up are concentrated as middle infielders and centerfielders and then the defensive demands at the major league level dictate position changes to other places. The most common being the corner outfield slots. And from our last column, we promised a review of the best players who accumulate “little stats: at this time and can reasonably be expected to contribute more than their fair share of “little stats” in 2022.

as a player who was most affected by the COVID lockdowns. Bart was the #2 overall draft pick in the 2018 MLB draft and is clearly being overlooked. He has produced excellent stats at the upper minor league levels, and is discounted because he waited behind certain Hall of Famer Buster Posey. Bart is criminally overlooked and if you are in a 2 catcher format, pounce on that opportunity. The National League will most likely be implementing the Universal DH in 2022 and this could mean opportunity for Keibert Ruiz and possibly Shea Langeliers. The rest of the guys on the list look to still be a year away from significant playing time opportunities. Still, if you are in a 2-catcher format, and in a dynasty format, you need to go out and grab one of these guys. There are some impact bats here. The same can’t be said about 3rd base in MLB at this time. It is slim pickings at 3rd base right now. Such is the cyclical nature of the talent tiers at this time. There are only four (4) 1st basemen amongst the Top 100 prospects. There are five (5) 2nd basemen amongst the Top 100 prospects and

not a single candidate in the Top 30. But there are ten (10) shortstops that are in the Top 100 and no surprise that there are eighteen (18) outfielders who are ranked in the Top 100. That rings true almost every season. These things rotate each decade, and right now we are heavy in catchers. Go out and get one of these guys in your dynasty league, but don’t break the bank, and especially don’t break the bank given so many good candidates. You have to always take stock of the total depth. Last week I talked at length about the “little ball” stats of Craig Biggio who almost never grounded into double plays and was frequently hit by pitches. These are some good candidates contributing like this in 2022. Some of my favorites...... • Ronald Acuna – did not ground into a single double play in 360 plate appearances
• Byron Buxton – did not ground into a single double play in 254 plate appearances • Sam Hilliard – did not ground into a single double play in 238 plate appearances • Dom Nunez – a catcher who did not ground into a single play in 263 plate appearances • Mike Trout – his injury shortened season did not see him ground into a double play in 146 plate appearances • Andrew Benintendi – grounded into 2 double plays in 538 plate appearances These guys are all very fast. But of utmost importance, they don’t end innings for their teams, and are still on base waiting for their teams to drive them in as scored runs. Little stats are important. They add up.

Presidents’ Day

Presidents’ Day began back in 1800. When George Washington died in 1799, his February 22 birthday became a perennial day of remembrance. While it was an unofficial observance for most of the 1800s, Senator Stephen Wallace Dorsey of Arkansas proposed the measure to make it a federal holiday, and in 1879 President Rutherford B. Hayes signed it into law. The holiday initially only applied to the District of Columbia, but in 1885 it was expanded to the whole country. The shift from Washington’s birthday to Presidents’ Day began in the late 1960s, when Congress proposed a measure known as the Uniform Monday Holiday Act. President Richard M. Nixon signed an executive order in 1971. Washington’s Birthday, was shifted to the third Monday in February and Columbus Day, Memorial Day and Veterans Day were also moved to Mondays. However, Veterans Day was returned to its original November 11 date in 1978. Article

From Contract to Closing in a Real Estate Transaction

Q: I’m closing on a house soon. What are the steps involved? A:
A process of selling and buying a home, whether it is a singlefamily dwelling, condo or coop, involves several steps. It starts with signing of a contract and ends at the closing table where seller transfers title and keys to the property to buyer. In New York, it is customary for both sellers and buyers to be represented by their own counsel. Once Seller accepts Buyer’s offer, Buyer orders a home inspection. This is a delicate point in the real estate transaction, because if defects are discovered, the buyer may rescind the offer, ask for a reduced purchase price, or condition the sale on the seller making specific repairs. Otherwise, the buyer takes the property “as is”. The contract of sale is drafted by Seller’s attorney which is reviewed by the Buyer’s counsel and thoroughly negotiated by both attorneys. Once the contract is finalized, Buyer signs first and delivers to Seller’s counsel with the down payment check, then Seller signs. The down payment sum is held by the seller’s attorney in escrow account until the date of closing. If not a cash purchase, the buyer then officially

The buyer will always leave the closing with a copy of the deed since the original will be kept by the title closer and submitted to the county clerk’s office for recording. The title company insures the buyer as to the ownership of the property as well as the lender that their mortgage has priority over other liens.
submits the loan application to the bank in order to obtain a mortgage. If the sale involves a coop, an application package has to be submitted to the coop board for approval. As soon as the contract is fully signed, Buyer’s counsel orders a title search and an updated survey. Once the title search is complete, it is the seller’s attorney responsibility to clear any title issues, prepare the deed and tax transfer documents, obtain any mortgage payoffs, and gather the appropriate checks to pay liens or judgments found in the title report. The buyer’s attorney is responsible for reviewing the title, having the buyer bring the correct checks to the closing table, reviewing and explaining the lender’s documents and making sure that the title company is properly insuring the buyer’s title to the property. Both attorneys explain the documents to their clients before obtaining their signatures, draft specific affidavits required by the title company, and otherwise confirm that the required financial and title documents have been provided. A title search must be conducted to determine whether there are any existing liens, judgments, or violations
against the property or the seller. It also ensures that the seller is the legal owner entitled to sell the property. A report of the findings is provided to the parties - opening the door to further negotiations and possible pitfalls. Ideally, all of the complications are resolved before the parties get to the closing table, although occasionally an issue will arise during the walk through of the property that will need to be addressed. The closing is typically attended by the seller, purchaser, their
respective attorneys, the title closer, the bank attorney (if the purchaser has obtained financing) and the real estate agents. However, as a result of COVID-19, closings started to look a little different. Real estate closings are often conducted by mail, with parties pre- signing documents or giving their counsel a Power of Attorney. The title closer will attend the closing and make sure that any mortgage, judgments or liens are paid off and that any new mortgage is properly executed
The bank attorney provides the documentation required by the bank to be signed by the buyer and provides funding only when the title company issues a loan policy to the lender. Once the title closer is satisfied with the documentation and has provided the title policies to the buyer and lender, the closing is officially concluded. Only then will the buyer be provided with the keys and the seller receives the checks for the sale’s proceeds. It is a big decision to sell or purchase a real estate and the process is tedious. It is important that both buyers and sellers work with an experienced real estate attorneys to ensure that their interests are properly represented and protected. - Katerina Grinko, Esq.

Because grief is a healthy and normal response to loss, attempting to suppress feelings of grief can actually prolong the grieving process. It is common to replay the last moments of your pet’s life repeatedly in your mind. No one can hurry the process or provide a magical cure for grief. It is common to feel exhausted: physically, emotionally, and spiritually. Changes in appetite, sleeping patterns, or health are frequently reported. Those who are grieving often describe feelings of being out of control, isolation, and loneliness. Things that seemed so important before may now seem trivial. Others may experience a sense of “life isn’t fair” or being in a tunnel or fog while everyday life swirls around them. All these feelings are normal and part of the grieving process, which follows no organized plan, rules, timetable, formula, or schedule. Don’t be surprised if you start to feel better, and then feel as if a wave of sadness has hit you. There will be ups and downs.

The purpose of healthy grieving is not to “get over” the death of a loved one, but to integrate the experience of a pet’s death into present life. In this process, it is not unusual for certain memories of your pet to become blurred. This does not mean that you are forgetting your pet or that your love is diminished. The truth

experienced after the death of a pet. You may find yourself thinking continuously about what you perceive you could have, should have, or would have done to prevent or postpone your pet’s death. Some suggestions for coping with guilt include: 1. Be truthful with yourself about why you feel guilty.
2. Write a letter to your pet expressing feelings you may be struggling with. 3. Remember that all living things die. There is not always an answer as to why sad things happen, and you don’t have to find someone to blame, including yourself. Realize that sometimes you are powerless and cannot control everything that happens to your loved ones. The decision about bringing another pet into your home is very personal. Some families may decide not to welcome another pet because of the emotional, physical, or financial demands. The time to consider a new pet is when the entire family has had sufficient time to deal with the emotions of grief. Welcoming a new pet too soon can lead to feelings of guilt or resentment towards the new family member. Remember bringing another animal into your home is not a betrayal of the one you’ve lost. You will simply be opening your home and heart to a new friend.

Mal de Mer – Oh My Aching Stomach

As an avid student of the sea, I am always amazed when I read that even some of the ‘round the world sailors get “mal de mer” – sea sickness. While they get over it in a few days, which everyone will if they are just out there long enough, I wonder how they can put to sea knowing with certainty that they will be sick as dogs for 2 or 3 days.
What Is/What Causes Seasickness?
Seasickness starts in your inner ear. It is caused by the rocking of the boat at sea and, from my own observations, I believe that each boat has a certain rocking motion that is unique to itself and that each sailor has a unique tendency versus that. I have seen sailors on multiple configurations of boats, multiple sizes and various sea-states who get seasick without any predictability versus these mixes. Of course, there is the person who gets seasick at the dock as they get out of the car. While they are genuinely sick, they are not sick from the motion. They are sick from “e-motion.” They are convinced that they will get sick; they fear that; they get sick as soon as they slam the car door shut. I know of one sailor who only gets seasick in the English Channel. Of course, the first time he was there
it and I have seen it work with my kids. But start the night before… One of the more “esoteric” types of remedy is the wrist bands. They are supposed to work on your acupuncture point that is about an inch and a half above your inner wrist. Hey, if it works for you, use it.

To the sailor who gets chronic seasickness, it is like being in a cold, wet, rolling jail cell – plus the chance of drowning is never too far away, at least in their minds.
I am not a doctor. I am a sailor and a keen observer of the obvious – if it works for you, use it because seasickness really is a malady.
How Can I Stop It?
First, don’t get seasick. This means keeping your eye on the horizon as best you can. Watching the boat itself rock around is like reading in a car. It is going to cause problems because your mind and inner ear can’t process all those rapid little motions. If you start to get the least bit queasy, stand up or lie down – but get out of that chair. Having your innards pressing on your stomach, which is reacting to the signals from your inner ear, is a recipe for projectile emissions. Second, if someone around you starts to turn green, get away “at speed.” If it is your wife, throw her a bucket and your best wishes.* You will rapidly follow the leader if you don’t. Resist the temptation to have them or you avail yourself of the “puke deck”, i.e., evacuating overboard. Your internal balance system is shot. One bad jibe by the boat and you will be following your lunch

into the drink. But be aware of this. If you have gotten seasick, and you haven’t started preventative measures the night before you set sail, pray that you can fall asleep. There is nothing you can do if you haven’t started preventative measures well prior other than letting nature take its course. See above about those ‘round the world sailors.
How Do I Prevent It?
There are plenty of over-thecounter remedies (and I use remedies with a small ‘r’ because, for some people, they are just palliatives, not fixes) that come in
pill or patch form - Dramamine, Marezine, Bonine, Scapolamine (ear patches), etc. If you are going to try one, you might want to start with Marezine, since it is the least likely to cause drowsiness. Scapolamine is probably the most effective and its effects also last the longest, about 72 hours. It can have some strange side effects, however, and requires a doctor’s prescription. Phenergan, a suppository, can also be purchased over the counter. A natural aid is ginger. You can stock up at the Japanese restaurant or just buy the tablets (or the cookies.) Many people swear by

My wife got the bucket and a “here, use this.” Mariel got a bucket, a warm towel and me holding her hand. My wife said, “Sure. It figures!” between gasps. I said, “Of course it does. She’s only 9!” T’was a cold night for me that night… Aarrgghh! Besides being an Archangel, Raphael is included in other orders of the Celestial Hierarchy. He holds places with the Seraphim, the Cherubim, the Dominions, and the Powers. This is because he is the leader of the guardian angels and that sphere of duty is spread out over many of the other angelic realms. Raphael oversees the duties of these angels as they watch eternally over the innumerable souls throughout the universe, and they report their findings exclusively to him. He displays a patron’s sense in dealing with mankind that is unlike that of his fellow archangels. According to angelic lore Raphael’s left arm is tattooed with informal angelic script which reads
“God Has Healed.” He is often depicted in artwork as a powerfully built, winged man walking along a road holding a staff, his wings shining brilliantly with golden luminance. He is also frequently shown as a man in discussion with one or more humans unaware of his being an angel. Though warfare is not his highest priority he will answer to the call of duty when Gabriel’s battle horn sounds. In combat he wields a magnificent and terrifying spear that has no limits to the distance he can throw it. The primary blade of Raphael’s nine-foot iron spear is emblazoned with his name written in formal angelic script. He does not enter combat joyously and always attempts to end
