'Tis The Season of Tree Lighting Ceremonies

Mastic Beach Hundreds of residents, community leaders, chamber members and elected officials took part in numerous tree lighting ceremonies and parades this weekend to kick off the Christmas holiday.

In Mastic Beach, the newly formed Greater Mastic Beach Chamber of Commerce sponsored their first annual Christmas tree lighting.

The ceremony which was held at Ultimate Mower was sponsored by The South Shore Press, the Mastic Beach Fire Department, Party 105.3 Radio, Shirley Pet and Feed, Ultimate Mower, LJ’s What’s Hot and Lindsor Torres.

Suffolk County Clerk Judy Pascale would like to bring to the attention of Suffolk County residents a recently released phishing scam where fictitious e-mails are sent to motorists that appear to be from the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles (NYSDMV).

This latest scheme involves an e-mail stating that you have outstanding traffic infractions that must be paid within 48-hours of receipt. You are required to click on a link to either pay the fine

· Exercise caution with all email communications you receive, including those that purport to be from a trusted entity. Inspect the sender’s information to confirm the email was generated from a legitimate source. · Keep an eye out for telltale signs of phishing - poor spelling or grammar, the use of threats, the URL does not match that of the legitimate site. If the message does not feel right, chances are, it is not. · Be suspicious of links embedded in an unsolicited email. · Don’t open unexpected email attachments. The attached files

may be hiding malicious software. · Don’t send your personal information via email. Legitimate businesses will not ask users to send sensitive personal information through email. · Don’t post sensitive information online. The event was held at the corner of Broadway and Prince Road where residents were treated

to holiday carols performed by local Girl and Boy Scout troops and holiday musical selections performed by the Rocky Point Eighth Grade orchestra, Middle School Brass Ensemble and the Rocky Point High School Jazz Band. To the delight of the crowd, Santa arrived with the Rocky Point Fire Department and greeted the crowd with a hearty “Ho, ho, ho!”

Throngs of residents came out for the Medford Tree Lighting and Festival at Medford Memorial Park, sponsored by the Medford Chamber of Commerce and the Patchogue-Medford Library. New York State Assemblyman Joe DeStefano and Suffolk County Legislator elect Dominick Thorne attended along with with honoree Suffolk County Legislator Rob Calarco who was given the task of flipping the switch lighting the Christmas Tree. Joe LoSchiavo led a musical group playing holiday songs with people joining in caroling. There were crafts, games, hot chocolate, cookies, and topping off this spectacular event, photos with Santa. Congratulations to Cathy LoSchiavo on being elected, “Miss Medford 2021,” by the Medford Chamber of Commerce in appreciation for all you do for the Medford community.

Zeldin Continues Drive for Governor Congressman Lee Zeldin recently held another fundraising event in Suffolk County in his quest to become Governor of New York State.

Over 200 people attended the event which helped Zeldin raise funds for his 2022 campaign.

Long Island's American Idol Star Shannon Gibbons to Appear As a Star Singer in Holiday Spectacular on Ice! a national level began when she placed 3rd at the 1991 U.S. Figure Skating Championships, allowing her to qualify for the 1991 World Championships where she won the bronze medal as part of an American sweep.

In 1992, she earned a bronze medal in the Albertville Winter Olympics and a silver medal at the 1992 World Championships.

In 1993, Kerrigan became the United States Ladies Champion and followed that up with her historic silver medal performance at the 1994 Lillehammer Winter Olympics.

Shannon Gibbons, a Bellport native, will appear alongside Nancy Kerrigan and Polina Edmunds as a Star Singer in The Gateway's Holiday Spectacular on Ice at Patchogue Theatre.

Shannon Gibbons was a star front-runner and Top 40 contestant on the hit television show, “American Idol,” in the 2019-2020 season.

Locally, she was the winner of Bellport Idol two years in a row along with winning Islip Town Idol. She was the lead singer of the rock group “The Om-en” from 2016 to 2020. She has performed in numerous shows at bars, restaurants, clubs, parties, and festivals, including the Montauk Music Festival, the Great South Bay Music Festival, the Bellport Concert Series, and the Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utah.

Recently she formed “The Shannon Gibbons Band” and has written music and lyrics on numerous songs that have been professionally produced and performed. She is also a member of the professional pop band, “Beat the System” since late 2020, with the band releasing their first single “Chasing the High” in April 2021.

Polina started off the 2014-2015 season with gold at the 2014 U.S. International Classic. She finished fourth at the 2015 U.S. Championships and was named to the 2015 World Team. Polina then went on to win gold at the 2015 Four Continents Championships in Seoul, Korea.

Polina has established that she can compete with the top skaters in the world. She won the short program at the 2016 U.S. Figure Skating Championships in St. Paul, Minnesota, and was the only top skater in the field to produce two nearly flawless routines.

A proven technical commodity since her days at the junior and novice levels, Polina is now emerging as one of the top artists in the sport at the senior level.

She has worked very hard with longtime coach, David Glynn, and choreographer Rudy Galindo the 1996 men’s national champion - to showcase her long lines and balletic style on the ice.

In addition to her ability to land difficult triple-triple jump combinations, the 5-foot-8 Polina shined in her short program, which she skated to Beethoven's "Moonlight Sonata" and in her free skate, which she performed to music from "Gone with the Wind.”

Polina organized & choreographed "Skating in a Princess Wonderland" – two holiday figure skating shows at Sharks Ice San Jose. Polina showcased not only her talent, but the bright future of San Jose figure skating.

Bellport High School seniors Boris Berja and Rianna Raghunandan have been selected

by QuestBridge as 2021 National Finalists for demonstrating outstanding academic achievement.

QuestBridge is a national, nonprofit institution that connects the country’s most exceptional students with leading educational institutions and further academic opportunities at some of the nation’s top colleges and universities. As finalists, Berja and Raghunandan will potentially be matched with a full scholarship to one of QuestBridge’s partner colleges.

In its prestigious selection process, QuestBridge searches for academically talented students who match the partner colleges’ level of academic achievement and can potentially thrive on their campuses. Finalists are chosen from a pool of applicants who are in the top 5-10% of their class, have received mostly A’s in the school’s most rigorous classes and have

In addition to being academically talented, Berja is a member of his school’s National, Math and Science honor societies and vice president of the French Club. He also participates in the Outdoor Club and Students for Environmental Quality Club.

Equally involved in her school, Raghunandan is a member of the chamber orchestra, Key Club, and National, Tri-M Music, Science and Math honor societies.

The South Country Central School District congratulates both seniors on this outstanding academic accomplishment.

Good brushing habits and the job of a dentist were discussions that first and third graders at Kreamer Street Elementary School in the South Country Central School District participated in during a special presentation by Stony Brook University Hospital pediatric dental residents on Dec. 2.

The doctors visited the school as part of an outreach program that aims to

encourage children to work on good oral hygiene habits early in life and build positive relationships with children so they understand that a visit to the dentist can be a positive experience.

The students were excited to watch a short video about dental hygiene and then ask and answer questions about proper brushing, the use of mouthwash and more.

Councilman Loguercio Celebrates the Holidays with East Patchogue VFW A Busload of Food Post 8300 On December 2, Councilman Michael Loguercio attended the annual VFW Post 8300 Holiday Dinner held at Bellport Country Club. The Councilman works closely with the VFW post throughout the year to help promote their efforts to make the Bellport-East Patchogue a better place to live for everyone. During the month of November, the students worked to collect nonperishable goods that were then donated to 20 families within the South

Country Central School District, as well as to the nonprofit Lighthouse Mission.

All of the donations were loaded onto the district’s mobile library bus, sorted into Thanksgiving baskets and delivered.

Brookhaven Highway Department Completes Installation of Sidewalk along West Meadow Beach Road

Brookhaven Town Highway Superintendent Daniel P. Losquadro, Supervisor Ed Romaine and Councilmember Jonathan Kornreich joined with residents and community members for the ribbon-cutting of a new sidewalk installed along West Meadow Road and Trustees Road from Mt Grey Road to the entrance of West Meadow Beach. Funding for this project, which cost approximately $283,000, was fully covered by a grant from the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA).

“This half-mile stretch of roadway is heavily traversed with traffic to and from the beach,” said Superintendent Losquadro.

“Pedestrians,

bicyclists, lifeguards, and residents can now feel safer accessing West Meadow Beach along the new sidewalk.”

Supervisor Romaine said, “West Meadow Beach is a popular destination for pedestrians all year round and now a walk down Trustees Road is much safer than before. I thank Superintendent Losquadro and the men and women of the Highway Department for making the improvements to our infrastructure that will have a lasting impact for years to come.”

Councilmember Kornreich said, “It was truly an honor to be able to take part in making our community a safer place for our residents. I am so thankful

to those who were able to contribute their time and effort to this project. My team and I will continue to work hard to ensure the safety and well-being of our residents. I would like to encourage everyone to take a walk down Trustees Road toward West Meadow Beach to have an opportunity to relax and appreciate the value in our community.”

Long Island is home to a thriving agricultural and farming community. Most farms on Long Island are family owned and operated and have been around for decades— some for well over a century. Farms are critical to ensure fresh food is available, particularly during challenging times. Perhaps no time was that more apparent than during the height of the coronavirus pandemic. When global supply chains were disrupted, Long

Island farms were regularly bringing fresh produce to Long Island and New York City.

These farms not only provide food (and crops, wines and spirits) to feed us, they are also a vibrant and critical part of our local and regional economy.

There are nearly 600 farms on Long Island and Suffolk County ranks fourth in New York State agriculture sales. Regionally, we are first in the State in aquaculture and first in the State for bedding and garden plants and the number of tomatoes harvested.

All of this work requires a robust workforce to grow, harvest, and sell agri- and aqua-culture products.

Farmworkers are predominantly seasonal workers that, during peak harvest season, often work in excess of a traditional 40-hour workweek. In addition, farmworkers must rely on the weather being suitable to complete the necessary work. If the weather forces hours or days to be lost, that time must be made up in time to complete the task, making a traditional 40-hour workweek not practical. In light of that, New York State provides that farmworkers accrue overtime after working 60 hours per week as opposed to the traditional 40.

In addition, the project will add an estimated $12,511.11 to the local ambulatory service’s budget and $7,901.35 to the local fire department. Moreover, this project will also offer year-round patronage to local businesses.

Act that, among other things, created a “Wage Board”—an unelected trio of individuals—to unilaterally determine overtime levels for farmworkers. Last year, the Wage Board recommended keeping overtime levels at the 60-hour mark, however, decided to revisit the issue by December 15, 2021.

Farmers across Long Island are struggling. The cost to do business in New York is significant, and each year farmers—like all businesses—have to navigate ever more challenging mandates from the State. While increasing the minimum wage and paid family leave are good things for all employees, they are significant

costs to business owners and farmers.

The cost of fuel is skyrocketing and the State’s mandate to be carbon neutral will make much of the equipment farms rely on obsolete. Lowering the overtime threshold will be another significant new cost to farmers that will lower crop outputs, lay off staff, or both.

It is imperative that the Wage Board reject any changes to the overtime threshold and maintain it at the current 60-hours. Farms literally keep food on the table for us. To quote many of the farmers I have met with in my district, “we cannot bite the hand that feeds us.”

In 6th LD: Absentee Ballot Count Puts Anker Over the Top

After a recount of election ballots in Suffolk's 6th Legislative District, a full recount of all ballots, and the withdrawal of 74 ballot challenges, 6th Legislative District Democrat incumbent Sarah Anker came across the finish line ahead of her challenger, Republican candidate Brendan Sweeney, by 63 votes.

In an interview following the recount on Monday, Anker said she was happy final results were tallied, giving her one final two year term to continue serving the 6th LD, and to complete unfinished projects including Rails for Trails. Recounting the 2021 Elections, Anker said, "On election night I was shocked that I lost really surprised. When I lost on election night, I was down 58 votes and was slowly accepting defeat."

Anker recalls that Elections Commissioner Anita Katz said she would need at least 87% of the 2,000 plus absentee ballots to at least tie and that it would was probably not possible but," Anker said, "I didn't concede because every vote counts." When all votes were counted and tallied, Anker did, in fact, garner a resounding 88% of absentee ballots, or what she calls a miracle. "I'm the poster child where every vote counts," Anker said, noting she was ahead by one vote on election night 2015 and ultimately won Thst race by another narrow victory of 19 votes. In this year's election, Anker

was down 12 votes over Sweeney, but in addition to sweeping the absentee ballot count, Anker won 65 of the 75 contested ballots. She credits her supportive constituent last and senior citizens for their tenacity.

Reached for comment Monday following the recount, Sweeney, who was deferring comments to Suffolk County GOP Chairman Jessie Garcia, told South Shore Press, "If they feel I am the candidate best suited for the District, then I will accept the nomination with pride. If it is decided they would seek to nominate someone else..."

Sweeney continued, "I would be fully supportive of the person the county nominates."

While Anker waited for election results, she was experiencing a personal family tragedy that would put everything into perspective.

"My sister was trying to recover from breast cancer this past year, and she won her battle just last week having been told she was cleared - I took what I thought was my defeat on election night and realized this was nothing compared to having to battle for your life like my sister just did."

"Solar Tax" Lambasted at LIPA Public Hearings

BY KARL GROSSMAN The move referred to repeatedly as a “solar tax” by speakers at Long Island Power Authority public hearings last week was lambasted by them.

The New York State Public Service Commission earlier this year began seeking a new charge for those who install solar panels after January 1, 2022. They would have to pay a monthly charge of between $5 and $10 a month depending on the size of their solar installations.

The PSC has termed the charge a “Customer Benefit Contribution.”

LIPA in a “Customer Benefit Fact Sheet” it has posted online says “LIPA’s staff supports the PSC’s approach and has proposed to adopt the new CBC in our service territory.” The LIPA board of trustees could vote on applying the solar surcharge on Long Island at the board’s next meeting on December 15.

LIPA arranged for the public hearings to be held by Zoom because of COVID-19. At the public hearing Monday evening that I viewed, speaker after speaker blasted the “solar tax.”

Francesca Rheannon, a member of the East Hampton Energy and Sustainability Committee, testified at the Monday evening hearing that the surcharge sets “a very bad precedent.”

She said “we should encourage people to go solar.” This would be a tax “on residential homeowners trying to do the right thing by putting solar on their roofs….This is absolutely going in the opposite direction from where we need to go….I ask LIPA: get out of the way.”

Reid Garton, president and CEO of New York State Solar, a company in Hicksville, and a member of the board of the New York State Solar Industries Association, said the “solar tax” would be “creating a charge that will likely be increased through the years.” It would

Ryan Madden, sustainability organizer for the Long Island Progressive Coalition, described the “solar tax” as “punishment” for “adopters of renewable energy.”

Before the public was given an opportunity to speak at the public hearing Monday evening, there were 40 minutes of comments and PowerPoint slides presented by LIPA staff members, largely boosting the “Customer Benefit Contribution” and asserting a dedication by LIPA to solar power.

Justin Bell, LIPA’s vice president of public policy and regulatory affairs, said the surcharge was a “fairness issue.” He said the new charge would help provide for new solar customers “contributing to the cost of essential programs” of

BY TOM BARTON Max Scherzer, Corey Seagar, Marcus Semien, and a slew of other big name free agents have been signed, but the high profile, and once high dollar, New York Yankees didn't land any of them. With the fans outrage growing by the day, will the once mighty Bronx Bombers continue to sit this offseason out, or will they redeem themselves in the coming weeks? Major league baseball might be locked out right now, but there are some big names floating around that can completely change the completion of this offseason. Not many experts believe Cashman will spend like the fans believe he should though.

On one hand we can look at the Yankees and come to the determination that this team is being fiscally responsible. Giving a $40+ million dollar contract to a 38 year old

pitcher, no matter who it is, seems like an easy overspend. Corey Seagar and Marcus Semien's contract blew away the estimates and both are looking questionable at best. Even someone like Justin Verlander, who the Yanks offered $25 million to, went for too much money, when you understand his question marks. But, this is the Yankees and money isn't supposed to be a factor that keeps them away from star talent.

The pinstripes have been in plenty of rumors since the end of the season.

Matt Olson, Luis Castillo, and Cedric Mullins have all been attached to New York, but those are trades, not signings.

The Yankees have some fallback options in players like Anthony Rizzo, Andrelton SImmons and longtime Yankee Brett Gardner, but those names certainly won't ease the bleacher

Yankees Sitting on their Hands creature's concerns. Carlos Correa, Trevor Story, and Freddie Freeman are all still out there for the taking, and could save this offseason, but the paramount question remains. Does Brian Cashman have the bankroll to be able to land a huge star, or is Hal limiting his spending?

The Yankees should make some moves, and I would expect at least one big splash. All they have done this offseason was to eliminate players from their roster, so it's a need and a must to add talent. Maybe it's Correa, maybe it's an Olson deal, maybe it's a combination of smaller players, but one thing is certain the Yankees will make a splash here. The only question is, are they doing a cannonball into the deep end, or will they puddle jump into the baby pool?

There is a lot of value to an old contrary indicator of mine. When I get to the deadline in my most competitive fantasy football league, it is a great counter indicator to keep all of the players for which I have received trade offers. It amazes me how many trades actually get made in this league because this collection of guys are some of the worst criminals I have ever played fantasy sports against. Look at the word I used.

I said fantasy sports. Not fantasy football and not fantasy baseball.

Fantasy sports as in all fantasy sports.

If you are looking for a friend in this league, go buy a dog. This is one of the largest cut throat collections of human beings you will ever run against. Even the annual draft they hold is a highway robbery. The host charged $70 this year for rubbery chicken, cold mozzarella sticks and watered down mudslides. The prior year’s host charged $40 and catered with phenomenal scungilli and other amazing Italian red sauce staples.

I play in a National League only league which is very similar. A fair trade offer is something these guys don’t know how to construct. So

why play in such a league you may be asking? The answer is a simple one. It makes you a better player and it keeps you sharp. It also gets you exposed to a lot of knowledge about what other fantasy sports owners are thinking about players they expect to breakout. And that always exposes bargains and sleepers. Everybody loves a bargain and everybody loves to find a diamond in the rough.

Especially in fantasy sports.

Two players I got a lot of trade interest for on my team this fall were Dallas Cowboy Tony Pollard and Minnesota Viking Adam Thielen.

Pollard broke out last Thursday with a 58 yard rushing TD and 78 yards rushing on a hard to run against New Orleans Saints defense. Zeke Elliott?

13 carries and less than 50 yards rushing for yet another week. Elliott has clearly nursed a knee injury for a few weeks now. But he also clearly has lost a step or two. Some of the jokers in my league saw Pollard as a buy low candidate. The offers were underwhelming, but when more than one person asks me for a player, I prefer to keep the guy, play him if I own him in other leagues and play

the hell out of him in DFS and get him into as many Fan Duel contests as I can get him into. HINT, HINT: Use Tony Pollard in all of your lineups and he doesn’t cost an arm and a leg on Fan Duel.

Another guy that this band of pirates inquired about was Minnesota wide receiver Adam Thielen. While I did have Washington wide receiver Terry McLaurin and Denver’s

Courtland Sutton, that doesn’t mean I would ever consider an IDP (Individual Defensive Player) as adequate compensation for Thielen.

He also has been on a bit of a tear of late with 3 touchdowns in the last 2 weeks. I have played both of these guys a lot in different DFS contests in the last few weeks and it has worked.

As I said, my NL-only Baseball League is cut throat as well and is a totally different group of people.

They look like the same sharks.

Though the MLB owners just locked the players out a lot of trade offers are going around once we got to November 1st, A couple of inquiries have come in on Seattle CF’er Jarred Kelenic. It can’t be forgotten that Kelenic endured an 8-for-86 start to his season. However in 337 at bats he did rebound to score 41 runs and he get 43 RBI’s from 14 home runs hit. His production over 600 at bats works out to 75 runs scored and 75 RBI’s and he would have hit 24 home runs had he played a full season.

Given his projection of being a 5-tool talent, he is 22 years old and is only going to get better. Hence, owners are asking me for him. It is almost as if they think they have invented plutonium. I know what Kelenic means to a team playing in a dynasty league. But thank you for confirming my faith in him.

Estate and Gift Taxes for 2022

Q: A:

With the end of the year coming, can you tell me about any updates to estate and gift taxes for 2022?

The Tax Cuts and Jobs Act (the “Act”) increased the federal estate tax exclusion amount for decedents dying in years 2018 to 2025. The exclusion amount is for 2022 is $12.06 million. This means that an individual can leave $12.06 million, and a married couple can leave $24.12 million dollars to their heirs or beneficiaries without paying any federal estate tax. This also means that an individual or married couple can gift this same amount during their lifetime and not incur a federal gift tax.

The rate for the federal estate and gift tax remains at 40 percent.

There are no 2022 changes to the rules regarding step-up basis at death.

That means that when you die, your heirs’ cost basis in the assets you leave them are reset to the value at your date of death.

consists of real or tangible property located outside of New York State; while the decedent was a nonresident; before April 1, 2014; between January 1, 2019, and January 15, 2019.

The Portability Election, which allows a surviving spouse to use his or her deceased spouse’s unused federal estate and gift tax exemption, is unchanged for 2022. This means a married couple can use the full $24.12 million exemption before any federal estate tax would be owed. To make a portability election, a federal estate tax return must be timely filed by the executor of the deceased spouse’s estate.

For 2022 the annual gift tax exclusion has increased to $16,000.

This means that an individual can give away $16,000 to any person in a calendar year ($32,000 for a married couple) without having to file a federal gift tax return.

Despite the large Federal Estate Tax exclusion amount, New York State’s estate tax exemption for 2021 is $5.93 million. As of the date of this article, the exact exclusion amount for 2022

has not been released. It is anticipated to be a little over $6 million in 2022.

New York State still does not recognize portability.

New York has a three-year lookback on gifts as of January 16, 2019. However, a gift is not includable if it was made by a resident or nonresident and the gift

However, there are many reasons to engage in estate planning. Those reasons include long term care planning, tax basis planning and planning to protect your beneficiaries once they inherit the wealth. In addition, since New York State has a separate estate tax regime with a significantly lower exclusion than that of the Federal regime it is still critical to do estate tax planning if you and/ or your spouse have an estate that is potentially taxable under the New York State law.

Visual Distress Signals and the Private Boat Captain

When I teach seamanship courses, I stress to the private boat captains that they have to imagine that they are astronauts who have landed on Mars. If something has gone wrong, it is going to take time for help to arrive so you have to start doing things to buy yourself more time. And when does the rescue clock start? When someone sees or hears your cry for help. And we start with getting that clock started as fast as possible – the visual distress signal.

USCG requirements for visual distress signals are:

• Three hand-held red flares (day and night).

• One hand-held red flare and two parachute flares (day and night).

• One hand-held orange smoke signal, two floating orange smoke signals (day), and one electric distress light (night only).

More recently, under 46 CFR 161.013, vessels equipped with one SOS eVDSD non pyrotechnic marine signal device and one orange emergency flag to be Coast Guard are compliant. There are a number of manufacturers – my vessel is equipped with Sirius Signal’s device.

Of note, check the expiration dates on the side of the conventional flare.

They are manufactured with 3 ½ years of life. How long have they been on the shelf or in your cabin? By the way, are they still good after the expiration date? Most likely they are so keep them around as back-up. But don’t expect to pass a USCG boarding if they aren’t “good to go” as the boarding officer looks at them.

• Recreational boats less than 16 feet in length.

All boaters should be able to signal for help and instructions for use are printed right on the device. What should you consider when doing so?

First, unless you are truly “in extremis”, don’t set them off unless you can see or hear help nearby (btw, if you can see lights on the land, that constitutes help nearby – just don’t use them all in case no one is looking.) Shooting flares into a dark, empty sky might prove to be totally useless, especially if someone happens along later and you have no way to signal them. Secondly, if you are using hand held flares, hold them out over the side of the boat. If a piece of the burning slag drops off and lands on your fiber glass deck, be prepared to watch it burn straight through to the sea below. You can’t put out the burning magnesium compound. Third, if a flare pistol or hand-held rocket propelled distress signal is used, be sure to take the wind into account. In generally calm winds, keep your arm at approximately 45-60 degrees above the

BPD is probably the most misunderstood psychiatric diagnosis.

The biggest misperception is that people with BPD never get any better.

In reality, medications can help reduce depression, moodiness, and impulsivity. Certain treatments have been shown to be effective in research.

I have met many recovered clients who no longer feel compelling urges to hurt themselves, who feel good about themselves, and who give and receive love without hesitation. To present BPD, the client who suffers from this diagnosis, and the folks who are in his world, I have put together Part I and Part II articles, in order to cover the significance of this diagnosis.

To understand borderline behavior, you have to leave your own world and journey into theirs. And you should,

As you can see, distress signals have distinct advantages and disadvantages.

No single device is ideal under all conditions or suitable for all purposes.

Pyrotechnics are usually recognized as excellent distress signals but there is potential for injury and property damage if not properly handled. That’s why I equipped my boat with eVDSD devices.

By USCG regulations, who is required to have these visual distress signals?

"All vessels used on coastal waters,

the Great Lakes, territorial seas, and those waters connected directly to them, up to a point where a body of water is less than two miles wide must be equipped with U.S.C.G. Approved visual distress signals. Vessels owned in the United States operating on the high seas must be equipped with U.S.C.G. Approved visual distress signals.

Regulations prohibit display of visual distress signals on the water under any circumstances except when assistance is required to prevent immediate or potential danger to persons on board a vessel."

And who is not required to have these visual distress signals?

The following vessels are not required to carry day signals but must carry night signals when operating from sunset to sunrise:

And don’t forget that the USCGAux gives FREE vessel safety exams. They are not a regulatory event – no one “turns you in” if the boat is missing something. We tell you what it is, generally give you our cell numbers so you can call us back when the deficiency has been addressed – and then get your windshield sticker that notes that your boat has met the federal standard for its size. The exam is all about safety of life at sea – yours and your loved ones!

When you’re interacting with someone with BPD, it’s crucial to understand that their unconscious assumptions may very different from yours. They may include:

• I will be happy only when I can find an all-giving, perfect person to love me and take care of me no matter what. But if someone close to this loves me, then something must be wrong with them.

• I must be loved by all the important people in my life at all times or else I am worthless. I must be completely competent in all ways to be a worthwhile person.

• Some people are good and everything about them is perfect. Other people are thoroughly bad and should be blamed

But think of our motto, “semper paratus” – always prepared! Why go to sea in anything and be unable to call for help and get the rescue clock started?

The Archangel Lucifer

OF MEN & ANGELS

BY DOMINICK FORTE The existence of the devil is acknowledged in the majority of the world’s religions. In modern biblical translations the devil is the adversary of God and God’s people. The Old Testament book of Isaiah says “How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! How art thou cut down to the ground which did weaken the nations.”

Lucifer was the most beautiful, most luminous, most intelligent, and mightiest of all the Archangels. The name Satan has become the most common name attributed to him. In Hebrew, the term “satan” translates into “adversary” which is the way in which Lucifer is presented in Biblical literature.

In the Old Testament, in Biblical literature, and in

theological lore Lucifer is portrayed as a tempter and seducer. In the New Testament and works relating to it Jesus identifies him as the devil numerous times.

Biblical scholars look to chapter 12 of the Book of Revelation and agree that Lucifer led a revolt of 1/3 of all the angels against God. Here he is depicted as a huge red dragon with seven heads and ten horns.

The reasons given for his treason focus on his pride overtaking his reason and his demand to be revered as an equal to God. Lucifer, also known as The Prince of Darkness, gathered his contingency of fallen angels and confronted God demanding to be set above the other archangels and to receive

equal status with Him. It was not originally his intention to supplant God but to have Him recognize his superiority over his brother archangels.

was never going to happen and so embarked upon an all-out rebellion to seize God’s throne.

But God sent his loyal angels into battle against the rebellious insurgent and the war ended with Michael and his bother archangels casting Satan and his followers down into hell. When Lucifer was cast out of heaven, the iron gates of the nine layers of the abyss were opened and waiting for the fallen Satan and those he duped into following him.

In the Old Testament Satan is only mentioned in a handful of instances. In his first and most important appearance to humankind he encounters Eve in the Garden of Eden. Here Lucifer either transformed himself into a serpent or gained control over

one to tempt her to disobey God and partake of the fruit of the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil. (By the way the word “apple” is never mentioned.) The temptation was successful and began the tragedy of the fall of humankind and his sinful existence on earth.

Lucifer’s attempts to sway those from God’s will are thwarted by humankind’s faith, prayers, and the devotion to God and his saints. Lucifer has an axe to grind with God over his expulsion from heaven. He is obsessed with leading God’s faithful into temptation. His greatest strength is his ability to deceive and present evil in a pleasurable light. Humankind’s greatest weakness is not being able to recognize him in his deceit.
