William Floyd United Teachers Partner With Helpsy to Distribute Winter Coats for The Community

On Saturday, December 16, the William Floyd United Teachers (WFUT) hosted a 1,000-coat giveaway in collaboration with Helpsy, a clothing recycling organization, to help provide a little extra warmth to the community this winter. The event, which was held at William Paca Middle School, showcased the spirit of the William Floyd community. In total, 1,000 coats were donated to community residents, 200 coats were donated to Colonial Youth & Family Services, and 100 coats went to Billy Floyd’s Closet, an inschool coat location available for William Floyd students who may need them.

Contributing to the spirit of the season, residents were welcomed to the event with a beautiful WFUT Cares sign built by William Floyd High School Career and Technical

Education (CTE) carpentry students, and enjoyed holiday music performed by the William Floyd High School string quartet, trumpet trio and choir. Attendees also received candy canes with special holiday messages from elementary school students, put together by high school volunteers, and had the opportunity to take photos with mascot, Billy Floyd.

Special thanks to class council students and CTE barbering students who volunteered throughout the event, and to high school teacher, Dave Bruccoleri, who donated 300 unopened toys for kids to receive at the event!

All in all, it is our hope that we brought a few smiles to local families that mean the world to us.”

youngest South Country students had acquired through a new music program at the school. With props and smiles, the students performed songs including “Snow Is Falling,” “Up on the Housetop” and “We Wish You a Merry Christmas.”

Helpsy is using its infrastructure to sort, condition check and deliver coats to community organizations in need of warm winter coats.

“Through our Project Warmth we are able to find meaningful and local use for thousands of coats we collect and give back to communities in which we work," said Helpsy Chief of Staff, Lisa Sciannella. “Because we have

‘boots on the ground’, Helpsy is able to assist communities at the grassroots level and we are happy to put our hustle where our heart is.”

Project Warmth is Helpsy’s community initiative.

The company is working to donate thousands of warm winter coats to individuals in need across the northeast this winter. Donated coats have been quality checked, are clean and in good working condition. By donating coats to local nonprofits in communities, like William Floyd, Helpsy’s Project Warmth will provide a warm winter coat to many people in need.

Helpsy works to reuse, resell, and repurpose the clothing it collects.

In the last year alone Helpsy collected over 31 million pounds of clothing. According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, textile waste is the fastest-growing type of trash in the country. It takes up nearly 6% of all landfill space and 85% of clothes end up in the trash.

Disguised Vapes Banned in Suffolk

By Robert Chartuk Vaping devices disguised as pens, highlighters, and other innocuous objects designed to fool teachers and parents will be banned by Suffolk County under a new law championed by Legislator James Mazzarella.

Voting unanimously, county lawmakers were “outraged” by the deception used by companies in getting their nicotine delivery systems into the hands of children to hook them early on the powerful drug. Mazzarella was joined in October by Suffolk District Attorney Raymond Tierney, town and school officials, and his fellow legislators to decry purveyors of the camouflaged vapes, noting that they contribute to a culture of abuse that leads to more powerful drugs.

“The industry wants to maintain the addictive nature of cigarettes by delivering nicotine to kids in devices they can hide from their teachers and parents, and it’s outrageous,” Mazzarella said. “Adults can do whatever they want, but we moved to protect the children.”

According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, vapes, mostly from China and aimed at children with candy-like flavors, are flooding the U.S. market at an unprecedented pace, with the number of different devices nearly tripling to over 9,000.

The disposal products made up about 40% of the $7 billion retail market for e-cigarettes last year.

The FDA had banned all vape flavors except for menthol and tobacco in rechargeable devices such as Juul, but manufacturers quickly switched to disposal devices, and sales skyrocketed, especially among those under 21.

The ban’s co-sponsor, Legislator Dominick Thorne, noted that the law restricts the sale of vapes disguised as USB drives, pens, smartphone cases, and even backpacks and hoodies with tubing that enable kids to inhale inconspicuously. “Vaping was created by the tobacco industry to make electronic or e-cigarettes appear less harmful and more appealing when, in reality, most vape products contain a large amount of nicotine, as well as several chemicals,” Thorne said.

Under the new law, violators selling disguised devices will be subject to fines of $1,000 for the first offense and up to $2,000 for each offense thereafter. Suffolk will also levy fines against those selling vape products to anyone under the age of 21. The bill is headed to the desk of county Executive Steve Bellone.

China is flooding the U.S. with nicotine products, particularly in small, colorful devices aimed at children, with the vaping device Elf Bar becoming the favorite among teens. U.S. authorities recently seized 1.4 million illegal Elf Bar products valued at $18 million, a tip of the iceberg in the multi-billion dollar industry.

“The FDA and public health advocates warn that these deceptive packages make it nearly impossible to detect, and that the flavorings are purposefully meant to appeal to and attract young people, and are commonly referred to as ‘training wheels’ for traditional cigarettes,” Mazzarella concluded.

Belmont married Caroline Slidell Perry, daughter of naval officer Matthew Calbraith Perry, a captain and commodore in the U.S. Navy, later famous for his expedition to open trading ports in Japan. Together, they were the parents of six children, with three of his sons becoming involved in politics. Belmont had previously been accused of an affair with a married woman and responded by challenging the accuser to a duel, in which he was shot in the hip.

Heavily involved in thoroughbred horse racing, Belmont served as the president of the National Jockey Club and owned the Nursery Stud horsebreeding farm near Babylon.

He was an avid sportsman and debuted the race that would become the Belmont Stakes at Jerome Park Racetrack, owned

by Belmont's friend, Leonard Jerome, the maternal grandfather of Winston Churchill. After his death in 1890 at age 77, the Southaven preserve was managed by Anson Hard, who eventually transferred it to Suffolk County in 1960. Other members of the Millionaires Club who frequented the Carmens River preserve were John Van Buren, the president's son, and banker and railroad executive W. Butler Duncan.

Southaven Park's Belmont Legacy

By Robert Chartuk Those walking in Southaven Park follow in the footsteps of August Belmont and other luminaries who were members of the Suffolk Club, a private group of millionaires who preserved the property for hunting and fishing. Many know him for the Belmont race track in Elmont and the Triple Crown horse race held there every year, but few are familiar with his lasting impact on Long Island by creating the 1,356-acre Brookhaven park.

Born Aaron Schönberg in 1813, Belmont was a GermanAmerican financier, diplomat, and politician who served as chairman of the Democratic National Committee. His early years were vastly impacted by the Rothchild Family, which possessed one of the largest private fortunes in modern history. Sent to Cuba via New York to manage the family’s holdings in the Spanish Empire, he found that the Panic of 1837 had collapsed their operations in the U.S. Since the situation called for immediate action, Belmont acted on his own judgment and salvaged the family's resources.

They eventually approved of his decisions and made him their permanent agent in America.

as disbursing agent, dividend collector, and news gatherer for the Rothschilds and their customers. The financial house he created handled deposits and invested in foreign exchange markets, commercial and private loans, and commercial paper.

His European connections attracted private investment from corporations, railroads, and state and local governments.

Nesconset Apartment Fire Displaces Residents Just Days Before Christmas

On Friday December 22nd, 2023 at approximately 14:43hrs the Nesconset Fire Department was activated for a Structure Fire at 187 Avalon Circle (Avalon Commons Apartments), in Nesconset. Responding Nesconset Chiefs had a visible smoke column from a distance . Upon arrival chiefs reactivated the alarm as a working fire. There was heavy fire throughout multiple apartments and 3 floors. The flames were through the roof and spreading quickly.

Nesconset Engine 3 was first due followed by Nesconset Truck 7. Nesconset Engine 3 pulled two hand lines, attempting to contain the main body of the fire.

Operations became defensive and multiple hand lines and master streams were put into operation.

After the main body of fire was

knocked down crews re-entered to finish extinguishment. One cat was pulled from the structure and returned to the rightful owner.

All visible fire was knocked down at 15:48hrs. The alarm was later placed under control. Units took up at 17:33hrs. There were no reported injuries. Multiple Departments were called to the scene including the, Smithtown, Nissequoge, St. James, Ronkonkoma, Lakeland, Kings Park, Centereach, Central Islip, and Hauppague Fire Departments and the Stony Brook Volunteer Ambulance Corps, and Central Islip-Hauppauge Volunteer Ambulance Corps operated on scene. The cause of the fire is unknown, but under investigation by the Suffolk County Police Department Arson Squad and the Smithtown Fire Marshals Office.

Romaine Looks to Clean House, Take County in a New Direction

By Robert Chartuk Looking to clean house and build an administration around personnel of his own choosing, county Executive-Elect Edward Romaine has asked all appointed officials working under outgoing county Executive Steve Bellone to submit their resignations. With a little more than a week before he takes over Suffolk’s highest office, Romaine and his transition team are busy vetting candidates for commissioners, deputies, attorneys, assistants, and head of the county police.

“There will be some people that will be let go because it's a change of administration. There will be some people that will be carried on for a short-term basis and there will be some people that will be kept on for a longer basis,” Romaine said, recommending that appointed officials who want to stay should apply through the SuffolkServes website. “We certainly need qualified people,” said Romaine, who will leave his post as Brookhaven Town supervisor on the first. Names have been circulating for various positions, but the incoming team is holding off on announcing them at this time.

The county Executive-Elect indicated that Bellone may have made personnel moves on his way out the door to protect some of his associates. “These are actions, if true, that I will review when I'm in the office and determine what should or should not be done,” he stated. “Government has to be far more effective and far more transparent. And one of the things that I am going to focus on is reimagining what Suffolk County government could, and should, be doing,” Romaine continued. “I will reorganize the government to make it more costeffective and efficient.”

Romaine said a priority will be on county finances. “We're going to look at the budget,” he stressed. “The budget should not have vacant positions that, in some cases, were never meant to be filled. Our budget is going to be a much simpler document that people can understand and be far more transparent. Right now, you see a thick budget that, if people look at it, their eyes glaze over. We're going to take a look at that budget, make it simpler, easier to understand, and people will know where their tax dollars are going.”

According to Romaine, the transition team, having broken into six committees, has produced a number of specific recommendations, including the appointment of economic development and affordable housing specialists and the consolidation of grants personnel. “These are very specific recommendations I believe will serve as a blueprint for Suffolk's future. They are common sense recommendations that should be implemented to make government more effective and cost-efficient,” explained the new county executive, the first Republican in the position in 20 years.

A transition committee of great importance to Romaine is the one tasked with vetting candidates for police commissioner, especially with the planned departure of Risco Mention-Lewis, the deputy acting in place of Rodney Harrison, who has already stepped down. According to Romaine, the team is looking at about 20 candidates. “It’s a widespread list with people from different law enforcement agencies, the New York Port Authority, all very qualified,” Romaine said, noting that he expects to have someone

Army Veteran David Mann of Patchogue has been named to the state Senate’s Veterans Hall of Fame by Senator Dean Murray. His stellar military career was recognized during a special ceremony at VFW Post 2913.

Mann served in the United States Army from 1968 to 1974 and retired with the rank of Sergeant. He was a combat engineer and was the recipient of two Purple Hearts for missions in South Vietnam. He was awarded three Army Commendations with “V” devices for heroism and was presented with the

Conspicuous Service Medal from former Governor Mario Cuomo in 1985. The "V" devices denote acts of heroism above what is normally expected while engaged in direct combat.

“It was my privilege to honor Mr. Mann as my nominee to the Senate Veterans Hall of Fame,” Murray said at the ceremony. “Sergeant Mann and the men and women like him who served in our nation’s military services deserve our utmost respect. I thank David Mann for his service to our country and protecting the rights and freedoms of the citizens of the United States of America.”

The county Executive-Elect also placed priority on staffing the department of law, which will have to grapple with a number of lawsuits faced by the county, including a multimillion suit by the Long Island Pine Barrens Society seeking to restore funds transferred by previous administrations from environmental to operating accounts. “We either litigate or we settle, but it's going to cost us hundreds of millions of dollars.

And it's concerning me,” he said.

Romaine referenced a report that his Nassau County counterpart, Bruce Blakeman, is enlisting former law enforcement officials to help investigate allegations of child abuse and neglect. Suffolk’s Child Protective Services office has come under fire after the death of East Moriches youngster

Thomas Valva after years of abuse by his father. During his campaign, Romaine often spoke of revamping the office. He also said that negotiating at least 11 public union contracts that come due in 2024 will be on his to-do list, as will be pursuing state and federal funds for sewer, road, and drainage projects. “I will negotiate the employee contracts with one standard that we have to adhere to: We have to be fair, and we have to provide enough incentive to recruit and retain a good workforce, a responsive workforce,” he said, adding that he will be looking at areas that need staffing such as 911 operators.

At the end of the day, Romaine said he wants a government responsive to the residents. “We want someone to answer the phone and be able to help you.

And if they can't, it should be one transfer and not 20 transfers to get an answer,” he said.

Radical Change in New York Voting Inked by Gov. Hochul in a Move Seen as Boosting Democrats

By Robert Chartuk Upending New York’s electoral system, Gov. Kathy Hochul approved a bill that will lump elections for federal, state, county, and local offices into one day, a move local officials said will dilute the power of voters to choose the representatives closest to the people. The new law is seen as an attempt to thwart the ability of Republicans to hold on to the local seats they have taken from the Democrats in the last few elections.

“With the stroke of a pen, Governor Hochul has committed a wholesale act of voter suppression in a desperate and obvious attempt to tip the scales in the favor of progressive left Democrat candidates,” said Jesse Garcia, leader of both the Suffolk and Brookhaven Town GOP. “The continued success of Republicans in local elections has the Democrat Party scrambling to negate suburban voters in Suffolk County, the Long Island region, and throughout New York State. I have no doubt that this will backfire on the governor. All voters will remember this attack on their ideals, our democracy, and our quality of life in future elections.”

Voters traditionally cast ballots for state and federal officials in the even-numbered years and town and county candidates in the odd years. Staggering the electoral process gives voters the ability to focus more on the candidates and the issues they espouse, especially on the local level. Running all the candidates together on one huge ballot will cause national issues to drown

out the debate and dilute the ability of voters to thoroughly vet local candidates, critics charge.

Even though Democrat voters outnumber the Republicans on Long Island, the GOP has taken over the legislatures in Nassau and Suffolk, all countywide seats, and most of the town boards.

“This is a mistake,” said county Executive-Elect Edward Romaine, the Brookhaven supervisor. “I think the governor has erred in her judgment on this and has done so for purely political purposes to give the Democrat Party an advantage, which is a shame. I hope this is challenged in court.”

“It's clear that the Democrat leaders in Albany feel that if they can't win at the ballot box, they'll simply change the rules until they can,” said Senator Dean Murray, who also accused the Democrats of rigging the state Court of Appeals to clear the way to change New York’s congressional district boundaries in their favor. “They stacked the deck in the courts, and now when they see they're losing local elections all over the state, and especially on Long Island, they changed the rules in their favor.” An appeals judge who voted against the federal redistricting plan put forth by the Democrats stepped down last month and was replaced by a judge who had previously voted for lines that give their party’s candidates an advantage.

In addition to Hochul’s latest move and the appeals court musical chairs, other changes made to the state’s electoral process that benefit the party in

control include mail-in ballots, public campaign financing, and the approval of touch-screen voting terminals that can be easily hacked, Murray pointed out.

“If ever a bill deserved a veto, this was it,” said Will Barclay, leader of the state Assembly’s Republican caucus, which voted against the change. “Moving local elections to even-numbered years will completely shift the focus away from local candidates, campaigns, and community concerns. Those critical elections will now be shoved aside and sent down-ballot by bigger races on statewide and national scales,” he noted. “And as a former elected official at the county level, the governor should have known better.”

“Unfortunately, the ballot is going to be so crowded that local elections will get lost, and we will not have the opportunity to have a fruitful discussion about the things that matter most to us on the village, town, and county level,” Romaine added. The new law will not affect school, library or fire department elections, nor will it be applied to elections in New York City or to countywide offices in Suffolk.

According to Betty Manzella, GOP commissioner at the Suffolk Board of Elections, the law will necessitate a multi-page ballot, which will ultimately increase the time it takes for a person to vote, thereby increasing lines during the evenyear elections. “There is no cost savings because in the odd year, we still have to print countywide ballots for district attorney, clerk,

and county sheriff, which are constitutional offices, and will be elected in separate odd years,” she said.

Defending the move, Gov. Hochul said in a statement: “By consolidating more elections in even-numbered years when most voters are already planning to participate in an election, this change will increase voter participation in important local races. Voter participation in elections held in evennumbered years in New York State is substantially higher than participation during oddnumbered years,” she said, noting that millions more voters participated in elections in 2020 when approximately 64 percent of eligible voters cast their ballots than in 2021, when just 25 percent of eligible voters turned out to take part in local elections around the state. Hochul’s press announcement of the bill contained statements in support from 20 left-leaning officials and organizations across the state, including the Citizen Action of New York Democracy Coalition,

Latino Justice Puerto Rican Legal Defense and Education Fund, Dominicanos USA, Generation Vote, and YVote.

Suffolk Democrat Party Chairman Rich Schaffer, who also chairs the Babylon committee and is the town’s supervisor, echoed the governor, stating, “Anything that encourages greater participation in elections is good for our county.”

“Governor Hochul and the extreme left have proven that they will stoop to the lowest levels to ensure a one-party rule to continue to advance their failed liberal extreme agenda and further erode the quality of life in New York State,” Garcia went on to say. “This is a direct attack on this country’s democracy and a shameless act of selfpreservation and kowtowing to the extreme progressive liberal agenda.”

As with the mail-in ballot law, the even-year ballot measure is expected to be challenged in court.

MTA to Spend $19.3 Billion Next Year

By Robert Chartuk Riders and the taxpayers who support the Metropolitan Transportation Authority will be on the hook next year for $19.3 billion under an operating budget approved last week by the nation’s largest transit provider. The spending plan avoids cutting payroll and reducing service, and relies on increasing ridership and a crackdown on fare beaters, estimated at 40% on city buses.

The budget counts on a 10% increase in paid ridership by 2026, but even if the MTA gets halfway to that target, it’s still looking at losses of $235 million a year. They’re also hoping for a ridership boost to reach 80% of pre-pandemic levels by 2027.

He noted that the NYPD has increased enforcement at turnstiles with a 50% boost in summonses. Additional MTA workers guard exit doors, and the transit agency is also updating entryway infrastructure to shore up the system.

Consumers Protected Under Gift Card Rules

By Robert Chartuk Many gift cards will be under the tree this holiday season, and consumers should know the state laws that protect them from getting ripped off.

Gift cards and certificates cannot expire within nine years and are not allowed to decline in value. If the remaining value on a card is less than $5, it can be redeemed for cash. Fees that cause a card to decline in value are also prohibited.

As part of a package of consumer protection laws passed in 2022, the state specifically forbids the imposition of any “activation fees, retroactive fees, redemption fees, service fees, dormancy fees, latency fees, administrative fees, handling fees, access fees, periodic fees, renewal fees, re-loading fees, or any other fee of any kind.”

There is, however, one exception to the law. A gift card or gift certificate that is redeemable at multiple, unaffiliated merchants or service providers may charge a one-time activation fee, not to exceed $9.

Cards purchased before the new laws were passed may still get around some of the restrictions.

“Gift cards are great since they provide both the giver and the receiver flexibility,” said Ava Torres of the Greater Mastic Beach Chamber of Commerce.

“You don’t have to worry about getting somebody the wrong thing. I’m glad the state has very clear laws to protect people.” She noted that many retailers, credit unions, and companies offer gift card discounts making them an excellent way to shop.

Below are tips consumers should keep in mind when buying and using gift cards: Research retailers before purchase. Verify the legitimacy of the seller. Check reviews and articles.

Check packaging. When buying a gift card, consumers should make sure the packaging and security seals are intact.

Use caution with third parties.

Consumers should use caution when buying gift cards from third parties or online auctions, as it may be difficult to verify the dollar amount remaining.

Review the terms and conditions. Before purchasing, consumers should always review the terms and conditions to understand what their recourse

is if the gift card is lost or stolen.

Companies are required to post terms and conditions either on the card or in attached packaging.

Beware of scammers.

Scammers often seek payment in the form of gift cards, also known as prepaid cards. Government entities, utilities, and other reputable entities will never call you demanding an overdue bill

or debt be paid with a gift card.

Consumers having difficulty redeeming a gift card are encouraged to file a complaint with the New York State Division of Consumer Protection. The office provides voluntary mediation, between the consumer and business, when the consumer has been unsuccessful at reaching a

resolution on their own.

Fed-Up New Yorkers Unite: Giglio's Battle Cry Against Government Overreach

By Raheem Soto In a fervent address before the Public Health and Health Planning Council, Assemblywoman Jodi Giglio (R, NY-2) voiced her profound frustration with the public hearing process and passionately advocated for increased public engagement. Opening with a pointed question on the need for in-person attendance discrepancies, Giglio set the stage for a compelling narrative.

"I'm unclear why myself and members of the public have to be here in person and some do not," questioned Assemblywoman Jodi Giglio, setting the tone for a critique of the existing format.

The assemblywoman brought to light a petition over 10,000 New Yorkers endorsed, seeking a public hearing to address the Department of Health's (DoH) emergency regulations.

These regulations, published in the New York State Register on December 15, 2021, have stirred concerns within the public, prompting the call for a comprehensive hearing.

"After they were ignored,

on February 17, 2022, I handdelivered a letter to Governor Hochul in which I was joined by 31 of my colleagues in the Minority Conference," Giglio explained. Giglio then pivoted to the challenges faced by New York in recent years, such as the global pandemic, nursing home deaths, and extensive regulations.

"These emergency regulations, especially those pertaining to

forced isolation and quarantine orders, mandatory masks, and visitation in nursing homes and adult care facilities, are all uniquely overreaching," Giglio declared.

In a bid for clarity, she questioned the quarantine and isolation locations, querying if they might resemble camps.

Giglio also challenged the broad authority given to doctors and the DoH Commission to enforce quarantine or isolation based on suspicion, advocating for a more tailored and transparent approach.

"One size does not fit all. The state should not be painted with a broad brush," stated Giglio emphatically, emphasizing the importance of nuanced, districtspecific considerations.

Giglio submitted the petition with 10,000 signatures for the record, underscoring the urgent need to address public concerns regarding the emergency regulations, which remain a point of contention for New Yorkers seeking clarity and protection of their constitutional rights.

Working Families Party Sets Radical Agenda for 2024 Election

By Robert Chartuk Candidates endorsed by the state’s Working Families Party in next year’s election will be running on a platform of raising taxes by $40 billion, allowing illegal immigrants to vote, and ramping up the number of illicit drug injection sites across the state. A reflection of the organization’s far-left leadership, the agenda is a far cry from the original Working Family Party’s agenda of supporting New York’s labor force.

Aligned with the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) and teachers’ unions, the party also stands against charter schools, an option sought by many seeking to escape the governmentcontrolled education system.

Candidates looking to run on the WFP ballot line will also be asked if they are in favor of providing taxpayerfunded health insurance to undocumented aliens.

“The Working Families Party is building our own party on top of the two-party system in the United States — and it’s working,” the group says. “We organize outside the two parties, and then we recruit and train people-powered candidates up and down the ballot and run them to win.”

The party is headed by Maurice

Mitchell, a nationally-recognized social movement strategist who is described as a “visionary leader in the Movement for Black Lives, and a community organizer for racial, social, and economic justice.” Hailing from Brooklyn, Mitchell worked as an organizer for the Long Island Progressive Coalition (LIPC) and was director of the New York Civic Engagement Table (NYCET) and downstate organizing director for Citizen Action of NY. “Seeing the need for an anchor organization to provide strategic support and guidance to Movement for Black Lives activists across the country, Maurice co-founded and managed Blackbird,” his bio states. He was also a key organizer of the Movement for Black Lives convention in Cleveland in 2015.

The party’s New York delegate is Jonathan Westin, a left-ofcenter political activist and community organizer who has led New York Communities for Change (NYCC) since 2014, his online info states.

Westin previously worked as a community organizer for the now-defunct Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now (ACORN), an activist group that was shut down due to financial problems and accusations of fraud. “Westin

has been a central promoter of far-left and left-of-center policies in New York City and has been involved in activist campaigns including Occupy Wall Street and the Fight for $15 campaign,” according to his bio. He also sits on the WFP national committee.

Running on the Working Families Party line in the last election put some local Democrats in a tight spot, especially considering their anti-law enforcement positions at a time when the state is suffering from a crime wave.

Suffolk County Executive candidate Edward Romaine, a Republican, castigated his Democrat opponent, Dave Calone, for accepting the party’s endorsement, accusing him of taking public positions opposite to what the party espouses. “Did he tell the Working Families Party leadership one thing and is now telling the voters the exact opposite?” Romaine asked during the campaign, which he won by almost 14 points. The 7,579 votes Calone received on the Working Families Party line out of his 121,115 total made no difference in the final tally, with some observers saying the line turned off more moderate voters. In a hotly contested race, Romaine also railed against his opponent for the Working Families Party’s support of

cashless bail and its anti-police, pro-criminal rhetoric.

The same result holds true in Brookhaven Town, where Councilman Daniel Panico trounced his opponent, Democrat Lillian Clayman, who picked up 2.81% of her total from the third party, nowhere close to the votes she needed to overtake him. Of the nine nonincumbent Democrat candidates the party backed for the Suffolk Legislature, seven lost. No Republicans on Long Island ran under its banner.

Working Families Party benefits from New York election law which allows for down-ballot cross endorsements. Because they went with Democrat Kathy Hochul for governor, they were able to pick up enough votes to qualify for a ballot line. With Hochul’s success, the Democrat Party shows up on Row A of state ballots, the Republicans occupy Row B, the Conservatives on Row C, and the Working Families Party on Row D. The former Liberal, Right to Life, and Independence parties did not qualify for ballot placement leaving their leadership with greatly reduced political power.

Already, Democrats are bristling at the ultra-left policies of the WFP. “I’m certainly not seeking their endorsement,” said Bronx Democrat Michael

Benedetto in a published report.

“Raising taxes by $40 billion is too far to the left. I’m not comfortable with that position.”

He was also nonplussed in media reports about giving noncitizens the right to vote. “Voting is one of the most cherished rights we have as Americans,” he noted.

Regarding their call for billions in new taxes, the party stated: “The Invest in Our New York platform proposes key progressive tax reforms which would raise about $40 billion annually. These reforms would raise taxes on New York’s richest through a progressive income tax, an increased corporate tax, and a set of reforms targeting other forms of wealth.”

“It’s a double-edged sword for Democrats taking the Working Families Party line,” said state Assemblyman Joseph DeStefano (R-Medford) who, along with the representatives of both houses of the state legislature, is up for reelection in 2024. “Getting a one to two percent bump by appearing on this line may not be worth it considering the baggage their extreme-left positions bring. Long Island voters are definitely not in favor of higher taxes, illegal immigrants voting, and the constant anti-police din we hear coming out of their leadership.”

NYS Proposes Forcing Chick-Fil-A to Open on Sundays

By Stefan Mychajliw When Scott Flath walked into the L.I. Hardware store in the early 1980s as a 16-year-old employee, the minimum wage was over $3 an hour.

He’s now manager of the Suffolk County small business, and is grappling with a mandate from New York State that increases the minimum wage to $16 an hour in New York City, Westchester, and Long Island, starting January 1st, 2024.

The store will have to let two workers go.

“It doesn’t help. We’re hurting.

The retail climate in New York is not good. We had record sales during COVID. Now we don’t get foot traffic or sales like before,” said Flath.

Businesses and families are hurting from Bohemia to Buffalo, Riverhead to Rochester.

An increasing minimum wage is just the tip of the iceberg: Next year’s $231 billion NYS budget creates a $9.5 billion deficit.

The Big Apple might cut cops and teachers because of budget busting costs related to the migrant crisis. It’s estimated taxpayers will pay $12 billion more to house 100,000 migrants through 2025.

New York just experienced its biggest population loss in history: almost 300,000 more people moved out than moved in.

The Tax Foundation stated New York has one of the worst business tax climates in America.

You would think state lawmakers would be hyperfocused on reducing the deficit and helping struggling businesses.

Not a chance. Their priority: passing legislation forcing Chick-Fil-A to open on Sundays at some of the 27 rest stop locations across the New York State Thruway.

by Assemblywoman Mary Jane Shimsky (Westchester County) and Jessica González-Rojas

(Queens), would require future rest stop restaurants to open seven days a week.

The bill language also appears to mandate restaurants at Port Authority owned rest stops “shall be required that services be provided every day of the week.”

Chick-Fil-A closes on Sundays

since the mid 1940s so workers can rest and worship.

“New York is burning and politicians are fiddling,” said Assemblyman David DiPietro, himself a small business owner who owned a dry cleaning business prior to entering the Assembly in 2012.

“High taxes, big government spending, overregulation, and unfunded mandates destroy businesses. There’s an almost $10 billion deficit but politicians want to pass bills about ChickFil-A? Unreal,” added DiPietro.

As for Flath, manager of L.I. Hardware, he believes New York should honor its contract with Chick-Fil-A, the same way he has to honor their unfunded mandates like raising the minimum wage or charging a 95-cent recycling disposal fee on every gallon of paint sold.

“We don’t have a choice. We do what the state tells us. ChickFil-A paid a price to be there.

If they want to close one day a week, so be it,” concluded Flath.

So while the deficit soars and businesses struggle, lawmakers' big concern is a Christian company that sells chicken sandwiches at thruway rest stops.

Sounds about wrong for every state in the union, with the exception of the People's Republic of New York.

Even Year Elections Source: Suffolk County Board of Elections

By Stefan Mychajliw While the position of Southold Town Highway Superintendent is an elected position, it’s the least “political” job in Suffolk County.

New York based attorney Joseph Burns, who has extensive professional experience with state election law, said it will be impossible for locally elected officials to raise enough campaign cash to compete with candidates running for statewide and federal office.

Current incumbent Dan J. Goodwin isn’t even registered in a political party.

“Fixing potholes is not political,” said the Southold Highway Superintendent, who won his last election in 2021 with 4,794 votes.

“A candidate for town board might spend a total of $1,500. They’ll be on the same ballot as congressional candidates spending millions.

Super PACs will spend millions.

How does a local candidate get their message across about clearing snow or building playgrounds? This date change will lead to further ‘nationalization’ of politics, which is not good for our communities,” said Burns.

When on the campaign trail, Goodwin talked to taxpayers about the hyper-local service the Highway Department provides, like maintaining 400 lane miles of roads, winter maintenance, plowing, sanding, pothole repairs, tree trimming, sidewalk repairs, roadside mowing, drainage and sump maintenance.

“I focused on the efficiency of the department, awareness of the job, and how I could do that better.

We’re a small community. People didn’t care about ‘big’ political issues. They wanted to know how I’d fix roads,” added Goodwin.

Now candidates for public office across New York State will have to focus less on local issues and more on statewide and federal issues.

That is because New York Governor Kathy Hochul just signed a law on Friday, December 22nd, that moves local elections across the state to even years, when races for

Governor and President take place.

Right now local elections for town and county offices take place in odd years, not in the same years when gubernatorial and presidential races take place.

“My concern is that local elections, which most affect the day-to-day lives of our residents, would get lost in the news cycle, while competing for attention with Federal and State elections,“ said Islip Town Supervisor Angie M. Carpenter.

State Senate Majority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins conceded the difficulty of the endeavor, acknowledging, "We do have a governor who is honest enough to say out loud that this is hard, honest enough to say she knows there will be pushback."

Slavery in New York has a deeprooted history, dating back to the colonial era when the Dutch West India Company introduced enslaved individuals in the early 17th century. Thriving during the 18th century, the institution peaked in the 1700s, persisting until its gradual abolition, culminating in total emancipation on July 4, 1827.

With American and European governments grappling with the far-reaching implications, the fate of over $300 billion in Russian sovereign assets, frozen since the conflict's inception, hangs in the balance.

In the United States, the farright faction currently holding sway in the Republican Party has successfully hindered the passage of a new spending bill for months, complicating efforts to allocate aid for Ukraine. Similarly, the prime minister of Hungary, known for his autocratic tendencies, is blocking an EU financial package intended for Ukraine. This political gridlock has raised concerns about the timely support Ukraine needs to counter Russia's aggression.

At the onset of the conflict, the U.S., the European Union, the United Kingdom, and other democratic governments collectively froze more than $300 billion in Russian sovereign assets, primarily in Europe.

However, the shock intended to prompt a Russian withdrawal did not materialize. Nearly two

years later, a growing chorus advocates transferring these frozen assets directly to Ukraine.

In a related move, Switzerland recently revealed that it had frozen an estimated 7.7 billion Swiss francs ($8.81 billion) in Russian financial assets. The Biden administration has assembled more than 20 coalition members for “Operation Prosperity Freedom,” with 10 more countries involved anonymously, according to Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin. They include the United Kingdom, Bahrain, Canada, Denmark, France, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Seychelles and Spain. Saudi Arabia and Egypt, which have substantial maritime interests in the area, have declined to participate.

The region is on edge as Israel wages war against Hamas in response to a brutal attack in October that saw militants enter Israel from the Gaza Strip and torture, rape, and murder

hundreds of civilians. The assault has galvanized public sentiment, with many condemning Hamas, while others defending them, including Iran, which is supporting the Houthis.

The Red Sea waterways are shipping chokepoints for the global economy and connect the Mediterranean with the Indian Ocean and the Suez Canal with the Horn of Africa. The situation is being referred to as a new “Suez

Crisis.” Since the start of Israel’s counteroffensive, 12 civilian container and freight ships have been attacked from the Houthi base in Yemen, with some being hijacked.

The task force currently includes U.S. destroyers Laboon, Carney, and Mason. The United Kingdom's HMS Diamond, a guided missile destroyer, and a frigate from Greece’s Hellenic Navy, are also patrolling the

region. Over the weekend, the Naval force shot down more than a dozen drones. The operation isn’t assuaging maritime interests, however, with over 100 ships reportedly diverting from the Suez to the much longer route around Africa.

Critics point to his failure to anticipate the attacks and secure the safe return of hostages, yet amid the continuing conflict, there is little inclination to remove him from office.

The incident has intensified diplomatic efforts, with Mossad Director David Barnea anticipated to meet Qatar's prime minister in Europe to negotiate the release of hostages held by Hamas. However, the timing of this crucial meeting remains unclear, adding to the uncertainty surrounding the delicate negotiations.

The killings of the hostages have injected urgency into political discussions. However, it remains uncertain whether these events will have political repercussions for Netanyahu or trigger significant changes in the government or military.

Netanyahu, along with members of the country's war cabinet, took to social media to

express their condolences and reiterate their commitment to bringing the remaining hostages home safely. Netanyahu stated, "This is an unbearable tragedy.

question during a hearing on December 5th, 2023: “Does ‘calling for the genocide of Jews’ a violation of your code of conduct?”

They refused to answer, as highlighted in the Times of Israel headline “Heads of 3 top US colleges refuse to say calling for genocide of Jews is harassment.”

Thankfully, it appears the tide is turning towards common sense and away from fear to condemn raging anti-semitism.

There’s legislative pushback in the politically correct paradigm

that ushered in DEI (Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion) policies at colleges across the country that many believe were the seeds of indoctrination that sprouted today’s crop of campus wokeism.

According to CNN, more than 12 state legislatures across the country passed bills or proposed legislation to cut spending for DEI programs. Ohio and Virginia want to ban DEI type teaching.

Dr. Michaels said the solution goes deeper. He recommends banning teacher tenure, due to the fact that like-minded professors indoctrinate generations of young students.

“Radical, liberal bias begins in the hiring process. They’re all leftists. They won’t hire anyone else,” said Dr. Michaels.

As for Post, he said the AJC encourages administrations to adopt policies to combat anti-semitism and works with students to keep them safe.

“It’s bizarre that in 2023 we have to fight so hard to protect Jewish interests. We always will,” concluded Post.

Decision on LIPA Becoming a Full Public Utility Nears

SUFFOLK CLOSEUP

BY KARL GROSSMAN With the New York State Legislature and Governor Kathy Hochul to decide in coming months whether to accept the recommendations of the state’s Legislative Commission on the Future of the Long Island Power Authority, it would be instructive to consider how LIPA began—and the work of two people instrumental in the creation of LIPA in 1986.

The bipartisan eight-member legislative commission has just concluded that LIPA should be a full public utility and operate the electric system on Long Island itself, not contract out the work to PSEG, a New Jersey-based utility. Its justissued report says that cutting out PSEG—which former Governor Andrew Cuomo in 2011 arranged to get a contract to run the Long Island grid—would provide a saving of $50 million to $80 million year, “the fee paid to PSEG.” And, the report projects, it would result in an improvement in service.

Instrumental in the establishment of LIPA were the late Murray Barbash of Brightwaters, and Irving Like, his brother-in-law and a Bay Shore resident.

What they did was flip the strategy they had used decades before to block the four-lane highway Robert Moses sought

to build the length of Fire Island and, instead, create a Fire Island National Seashore. Barbash, who died in 2013, and Like, an attorney who passed away in 2018, were both strong environmentalists.

I got a phone call from Barbash in 1962, the morning after my first article was published in the Babylon Town Leader on the plan of Moses, who lived in Babylon, for a highway on Fire Island. My piece quoted numerous people on Fire Island telling how it would have a devastating impact on communities and nature of Fire Island.

Two years later, in 1966, LILCO announced its plan to build the Shoreham nuclear power plant.

In the language of the nuclear promoters of the time, Long Island would be turned into a “nuclear park” with LILCO seeking seven to eleven nuclear plants all in Suffolk County.

Barbash knew there was no way to stop Moses on the state level. Moses, who lost a race for New York governor in 1934 by a then record margin, amassed huge power by heading commissions and authorities—becoming as Robert Caro would relate in his Pulitzer Prize-winning book “The Power Broker,” a power broker in the state. Needed to stop Moses and his highway was federal clout.

So, Barbash and Like created the Citizens Committee for a Fire Island National Seashore. And they and others involved in it, including famed Suffolk naturalist Robert Cushman Murphy, campaigned for the Seashore. They received the support of U.S. Interior Secretary

The suicide rates among the United States public have been increasing for the past 20 years, but among active military personnel and veterans of the post-9/11 wars, the suicide rate is even higher, outpacing average Americans.

Reports show 30,177 active – duty personnel and veterans of post 9/11 wars have died by suicide, significantly more than the 7,057 service members killed in post 9/11 war operations.

What is the reason for this?

This is not a simple question.

There are many different reasons.

Experiences and circumstances vary greatly, but some risk factors are well known. For example: Access to Firearms, About 65% of active military suicides involve a firearm. Among the veterans, the rate is even higher: almost 70%. By contrast,

firearms account for death in 48% of suicides in the general population.

Military Culture, is rigid, hierarchical, and demanding. It discourages reflection, abhors weakness, stigmatizes mental illness, and fetishizes toughness and aggression. Fearing that mental health difficulties will go on their record or undermine their peer reputation, many soldiers avoid or forego treatment. Untreated trauma and mental health problems tend to get worse.

PTSD, trauma and Moral Injury, experiences are predictors of suicide, both in and outside the military. In the military there is trauma related to sexual abuse that affects over 23% of the woman in the military.

With federal power, Moses was overridden governmentally and President Lyndon Johnson in 1964 signed the legislation creating a Fire Island National Seashore.

The impetus for this nuclear development on Long Island was the fight Con Edison lost when it sought to build a nuclear power plant in Ravenswood, Queens, in the geographic center of New York City. Key to blocking that project: opponents getting a bill introduced in the City Council banning the placement of a nuclear power plant within the boundaries of the city.

Thus, Long Island was seen as an alternative location for siting nuclear power plants in the New York Metropolitan Area.

Barbash and Like jumped into battle against nuclear power on Long Island. But how could this fight be won considering the federal agency that approved

nuclear plant construction and operation, the then Atomic Energy Commission, consistently approved construction and operating licenses for nuclear plants? The AEC was abolished by Congress in 1974 and replaced by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, but it also continued to consistently approve nuclear power plant licenses.

When nuclear power development began in the U.S., nuclear promoters got the federal government to pre-empt most local and state controls. But Like knew that a local or state government’s power of eminent domain still existed.

There were other ways in which nuclear power plants sought by LILCO were opposed including a demonstration in 1979 of 15,000 people at the site in Shoreham in which the first of the proposed LILCO nuclear plants had begun construction. It was the biggest demonstration ever on Long Island to date.

But grassroots and Suffolk County government opposition were, in the end, not what stopped Shoreham and LILCO’s plans for other nuclear power plants. It was the flipping of the Fire Island highway strategy and using state power—its power of eminent

domain (used to condemn land that an owner will not sell, for example) – to stop Shoreham and the other nuclear plants LILCO sought.

A model for Citizens to Replace LILCO was the Sacramento Municipal Utility District (SMUD), in an area of California that also had a nuclear power plant that was shut down and SMUD has gone on to emphasize green energy.

Will the New York State Legislature and Governor Hochul in the coming year support the legislative commission’s report and have LIPA be, like SMUD, a full public utility—a full public utility.

As State Assemblyman Fred W. Thiele, Jr. of Suffolk, co-chair of the legislative commission, said last week in his winter bulletin to constituents: “The third-party management model that the Long Island Power Authority has used for decades…has failed time and again.

Making LIPA the transparent and accountable public utility that the ratepayers have long deserved has been one of my top legislative priorities…After extensive public hearings and independent professional investigations, the commission’s final report returns to the original vision of public power when LIPA was created by the legislature in 1986.”

Tyler Conzo Breaks Out for Smithtown West “Before the matches, before I even start wrestling, I just throw on my Beats,” Conzo said when asked about how he prepared for such a crucial match. “Start pacing back and forth, getting my mind ready, my mindset, and get ready to go on the mat.”

pinned their opponents at 131, 138 and 145 pounds, respectively.

Huntington’s Walter Kusterbeck picked up a pin at 116 pounds.

The Bulls led 23-19 heading into the most anticipated match of the meet at 170 pounds between Smithtown West’s Nick Zins and Huntington’s Christian St. John, two of the very best in the county.

In a back-and-forth match with roars coming from both sides of the gym, Zins won via an 8-5 decision after the score was tied at 5-5.

Huntington (5-2, 2-1) responded, though, recording consecutive pins by Thomas Smith at 190 pounds and Jason Mejia at 215 pounds just before Tynebor and Conzo’s matches that ultimately decided the meet.

By Nick Cipolla Eighth grader Tyler Conzo is a very talented wrestler, he is already making his mark in his weight class and it looks like he is a budding star in the near future for the Bulls over the next five years.

The 4’11” 101-pound wrestler found himself in the middle of a crucial match against Huntington last week that turned out to be a huge reason why the West-Siders came away victorious in a crucial League IV match.

“I don’t think it’s pressure for [Conzo],” Smithtown West coach Ken Leverich said to Newsday following the match, “I think he thrives in it. I think he loves it. Tyler’s the type of kid that wrestles all over the country all year-round. So being in those types of moments, if you saw, he had an extra bounce in his step.

He clearly demonstrated for me tonight that he’ll rise to those occasions, and he certainly did.”

West entered the meet unbeaten but they would have to make up for being without Senior Captain Jack DiMaggio who is suspected to have been dealing with flu-like symptoms according to Coach Leverich.

This meant guys like Conzo and others needed to step up and – ironically – Coach Leverich spoke of Conzo being like Giants Quarterback Tommy DeVito as he stepped up when the team needed him most.

Conzo came off the bench for his match following Logan Tynebor’s pin in the penultimate match gave Smithtown West a one-point lead over Huntington, setting up the newcomer for closing time in the final match.

This is when we got a glimpse at what the future could be like for the Bulls eighth-grade prodigy as he pinned fellow eighth grader Christopher Granito with 54 seconds left and he would walk away with a victory that gave his team the win.

By Nick Cipolla This past week before the Christmas Holiday, Center Moriches hosted a signing day event where baseball player Evan Kaloski signed his national letter of intent to play baseball for Manhattanville College, a Division-III program located in Purchase, New York.

Kaloski is currently a senior on the baseball team at Center Moriches which has been one of the best small school teams on Long Island having guys like former MLB Pitcher Paul Gibson attend the high school. “(It) definitely was a tough recruiting process,” said Kaloski.

“A lot of hard work goes in behind the scenes. I also have been dealing with a couple of injuries over the years. I always believed in myself, worked hard and just believed one day I was ready to play at the next level. I'm super excited to get this opportunity.”

Despite drawing some interest from other schools, the Red Devils Outfielder always felt that he would end up at Manhattanville.

“I thought the college had a nice campus,” Kaloski said. “I love the

coaches; they believed in me and there are a lot of nice guys in that program. And when I went on my overnight visit, I enjoyed it a lot and found out that this was the spot for me.”

The senior outfielder still has one season left as a member of the Center Moriches Varsity Baseball Team and he has set some lofty goals ahead of the 2024 season.

“My goal is to make All-County this spring,”said Kaloski. “(I’ve) been working hard for the last couple of years and it's no different this year. I also want to use this year to start preparing to go into Manhattanville and be one of the best freshmen there. I also would like to enjoy my last season of high school ball and play with no regrets.”

Newsday Names All-Long Island Teams for Fall Sports

By Nick Cipolla With all fall sports concluding about a month ago, the long anticipated Newsday All Long Island teams were announced. The South Shore Press would like to congratulate the following athletes who were named to the All Long Island teams in their respective sports from the following school districts that we cover:

Bellport:

This fall for the Bellport Clippers, the All-Long Island selections seemed a bit lighter than usual as only one member of their athletics program was selected to a team by Newsday despite a nice showing on the gridiron by Quarterback Caleb White and his teammate Trayvon Holland who both made All-County.

The lone selection for the Clippers was Girls Cross Country Junior Ella Masem. She is often overlooked as her competition in Class A just so happens to be AllAmerican Junior Zariel Macchia from William Floyd, but that should not overshadow the fact that Masem had a spectacular year on the course.

Masem finished 9th at the State Championship running a blazing 18:55 5000 meter time. She was also runner-up to Macchia at the Suffolk County Championship prior to the state meet.

Center Moriches:

The Red Devils of Center Moriches had one of their most successful fall seasons yet as they saw both team and individual success this fall.

Despite this, Newsday and their “Sports Writers” seem to not give a damn about small schools unless you're the second coming of Jeremy Ruckert, so they named only one athlete to their All-Long Island roster from Center Moriches.

The school’s lone All-Long Island honoree was Senior Setter Julia Hromada, who was named second team All-Long Island despite leading her team to a Class B State Final Four appearance.

The Long Island media giant also failed to name a single member of the Center Moriches Girls Varsity Volleyball Team to their First Team All-Long Island team despite the fact that they made it all the way to the Class B State Final Four.

Instead, they decided to credit Head Coach Nancy Morrow for all the team's success as she was named Suffolk County Coach of the Year.

Morrow was more than deserving for the award as she helped the Red Devils earn some hardware which they haven’t possessed since 2007.

Morrow helped guide her team to the Suffolk Class B title, a Long Island championship win, and state tournament appearance.

The most egregious snub from their list was Senior Running Back Matthew Albino, who was one of the best running backs in Suffolk County as his big play ability

was what put fear into opposing defenses all year.

Albino was given pretty much every other honor you can have besides being named his position's player of the year, but he still should have at least garnered a second team nod for his efforts this fall.

Antaky was also unbeaten from the first race of the year up until the Class A State Championship, where he finished second.

Eastport-South Manor:

Antaky wasn’t the only Bull who was named the Suffolk County Athlete of the Year in his sport as Bucknell commit Sophia Burns was named the County’s best swimmer

by Newsday.

The Sharks were ready to attack this fall and tons of individual recognition was garnered by their Student-Athletes.

The Sharks would bring home a Long Island Athlete of the Year honor this fall as Amanda Sweeney would take home the honors in her senior season.

Sweeney channeled her inner Joe Namath this fall by not just predicting, but guaranteeing her team would win the Suffolk County Class B Championship. The County title would be the first in team history.

She told Newsday that her individual honor was a shock and that it was completely unexpected as she was more focused on the team than herself.

In her final season as a High Schooler, Sweeney scored a Long Island-leading 19 goals to go along with 10 assists. Her 29 points tied for second most on Long Island. “(This) was an experience that I couldn’t change anything for,” Sweeney said of her career.

“It’s just been a great ride — five years. The first year I was pulled up for playoffs, and they were so welcoming, especially me being in eighth grade. Even the seniors were so welcoming to me. Ever since then, I just wanted to be that for the younger kids.”

Head Coach Ann Naughton was named Suffolk County Coach of the Year for helping her team win their first ever county title while Senior Emma McLean was also given Second Team All-Long Island honors for her contributions towards the Field Hockey team in their quest for glory this fall.

On the Volleyball Court, Outside Hitter Ayden DesLauriers continued the Sharks’ rich history of Volleyball as he was named to the All-Long Island team following a very dominant Junior Season.

DesLauriers was elite in 2023, totaling 425 kills, 50 aces, 12 blocks and 207 digs to lead EastportSouth Manor to a Suffolk II final appearance.

Longwood:

Despite making it to the second round of the Suffolk County Playoffs in football, only one athlete in the entire school was named All-Long Island as Running Back and Cipp Award Finalist Nnamdi Nwanyanwu was named to the second team following a stellar senior season that should’ve arguably given him first team honors.

Mt. Sinai:

What a year it was for 8th grader

Cali Gabrielson. Before she will set foot in Mt. Sinai High School, the most obvious heir apparent to William Floyd’s Zariel Macchia took part at the Nike Cross Regional at Wappingers Falls, NY where she placed seventh in 18:48.5 over 5000 meters and qualified for the Nike Cross national meet.

That’s right, a middle schooler qualified for a high school national championship meet. Unreal.

She also finished second in the Class B race at the public school state championships in 18:43 flat, second in Class B at the Suffolk state qualifiers in 18:54.29 and 11th at the state Federation championship in 19:07.4.

Gabrielson’s teammate, Paige Schieffele, also received All-Long Island Honors while she placed fourth in the Class B race at the public school state championships in 18:54.3 any was fourth at the Class B Suffolk state qualifier at 19:18.51. She finished her season placing 14th at the state Federation championship in 19:11.2 and 10th at Nike Cross Regionals in 19:11.

Patchogue-Medford:

Senior Rylee Wassmer was named second team All-Long Island in field hockey this fall.

Outside Hitter Julian Fray also received second team honors for his play on the boys varsity volleyball team this fall.

The biggest honor of the year for the Raiders was Goalkeeper Logan Guzik who was named All-State for the 2023 season as he was one of the top goalkeepers on Long Island and in New York.

Rocky Point:

Field Hockey Star Sydney Woods was named All-Long Island for her superb season that saw her put up 17 goals, 12 assists for 29 points, tied for the second most on Long Island.

Her offense led Rocky Point to a 13-4 record and a Suffolk Class B semifinal appearance.

Shoreham/Wading River:

Despite an injury late in the year, senior Grace Hillis was a key piece in everything SWR did, helping her receive first team All-Long Island Honors.

After suffering a leg injury, the Wildcats feared losing her late in the regular season. Hillis not only returned for the playoffs, she excelled.

The Old Dominion University commit had at least one point in all five playoff games before suffering a 2-0 loss in the state Class A final.

Hillis had 12 goals and seven assists, including five goals and two assists over six playoff games. While also playing lockdown defense, she had both goals in a 2-0 win over Kings Park in the Suffolk Class A final and then had a goal and an assist in a 2-0 win over Plainedge in the Long Island Class A championship.

Smithtown East:

The East Siders saw two monster seasons from two of the best athletes in the county this fall.

Junior Anya Konopka was named first team All-Long Island following an impressive Junior season for the Red Bulls.

The power-hitting Konopka earned her second All-Long Island selection after winning the Suffolk individual singles title. She reached the round of 16 in the state championships and was 18-1 on the year.

The other All-Long Island recipient from Smithtown East was superstar goalkeeper Diego Flores.

Flores, who has been the Olympic Development Program national team goalkeeper the last two years, posted eight shutouts, giving him 23 over his three seasons as a starter.

Coach Mike Menendez told Newsday that Flores is a “great shot stopper and communicator” and someone who “plays angles well and rarely gives an opponent a second opportunity on (a) rebound.”

Senior Mallory Anderson also received second team All-Long Island Honors for her efforts on the varsity girls soccer team.

Smithtown West:

The fall sports season was very kind to Smithtown West athletes to say the least as this was one of the best years the West-Siders have ever had in terms of program wide success as multiple teams made it to state tournaments while many individuals had standout seasons in 2023.

The highlight of the All-Long Island team nominations was Cornell-Commit Douglas Antaky being named Suffolk County and Newsday’s Runner of the Year as he made the hardest course in the region (and arguably the country) look easy as his 5000 meter time at Sunken Meadow was the fastest

Burns was a dynamo in the pool the last two years while authoring a final chapter that was everything she could’ve ever wanted. She would finish seventh in the Federation in the 100 free in 52.45 and sixth in the 100 back (56.99). She was also a member of the state champion 200yard medley relay team, making the combined Hauppauge-Smithtown swim team two-time defending state champions of the event.

The medley relay team has gone undefeated throughout the last two seasons.

Burns was joined by teammates Julia Lucca, Sarah Lucca (who received All-Long Island as an 8th grader), and Mary Grace Waring as All-Long Island honorees for winning the state title in the medley relay.

Head Coach Sean Montalvo was also named Suffolk County Coach of the Year in girls swimming and diving as his team's unbeaten streak has now stretched to 27 consecutive meets.

Another record breaking performance was by soon to be Division 1 Football Commit Jack Melore, as he was named to Newsday’s First Team All-Long Island.

Melore proved to everyone he was the best at the wide receiver position this past fall. He would go on and break the Long Island career record for receptions as he finished his career with 158 this season.

In only nine games, he put up numbers that are borderline “All-Pro” in the NFL. He had 78 receptions for 1,258 yards and 17 touchdowns.

On defense, he also added five interceptions and one defensive touchdown on a fumble recovery.

Melore scored 21 total touchdowns for the Blue Bulls and he won the Paul Longo Award as Suffolk County’s best WIde Receiver.

Lock Haven commit Brayden Stahl was named second team AllLong Island as he posted the second most passing yards in Suffolk County while also bringing stability to a position that Smithtown West hadn’t seen in a very long time.

Expect to hear big things about him as he moves on to college next fall.

Despite the Girls Soccer Team playing in the State Final, Newsday decided that only one Smithtown West player was worthy of the distinction of All-Long Island this fall as Madison DeMaio was the newspaper's pick for the honor.

DeMaio was definitely a star as the former gymnast scored crucial goals in the County Championship and Long Island Championship.

With season totals of 17 goals and four assists while scoring in 13 straight games before reaching the state tournament, the Monmouth University commit was definitely one of the best players on Long Island and she was an easy selection.

DeMaio’s head coach Emily Fey was also named Suffolk County’s Coach of the Year as she led the Bulls to the programs second ever appearance to the state championship and the program’s best season to date.

On the boys soccer team that also reached the State Final Four, Senior Defenseman Alex Tylar made the All-Long Island first team as he was the anchor of a defense that yielded one goal or less, including seven shutouts, in 10 of 11 games prior to the Class AA state semifinals.

Tylar, who switched to defense from center back this season, scored six goals this fall for the Long Island Champion Bulls.

Coach A.J. Gercke described Tylar to Newsday as “big, strong, fast, technical with both feet, dominant in the air, dangerous on set pieces,” and added that he “reads the game extremely well.”

Tylar’s teammate Gavin Reis was also named All-Long Island, receiving second team honors.

Last but certainly not least, the Bulls saw Isabella Spilotros come home with second team honors following a successful senior season

Ward Melville:

Another fall show eason, another successful season for Ward Melville.

It’s become a guarantee that is just as certain as death and taxes.

Robert Hauss was the most dominant soccer player in Suffolk County in 2023. It’s not up for debate as he scored 27 of his team's 55 goals on the year while assisting on 10 more, accounting for over half of the Patriots goals scored in 2023.

He was especially clutch in their postseason drive to the Class AAA title game, with three of his goals and two of his assists coming in the run. He eclipsed the program’s previous single-season record of 22 goals.

Despite only being a Junior Outside Hitter, Kyle Hagan established himself at the best of the best this year as he was named Newsday’s Player of the year for Boys Volleyball.

In the Suffolk Division I semifinals, he totaled a mind boggling 46 kills, three blocks less and two aces in a come-from-behind 3-2 win over top-seeded Bay Shore.

He followed that up with 43 kills, two blocks and an ace in a 3-2 win over No. 2 West Islip in the finals.

This gave him the honor of being the Suffolk County Championship Tournament MVP. After leading his team – who was a 5 seed in the Suffolk Playoffs – to their first county title since 2005 and first Long Island title ever.

Coach Brian O’Shaughnessy was named Newsday’s Coach of the year.

After LA opened their purse for Shohei Ohtani, their World Series odds fell from +550 to +450. Once Yamamoto signed last week the boys in blue had their chances to win it all go all the way down to under 4 to 1 in some books across the country.

In fact, more times than not, the teams with the bloated payroll do not hit paydirt when all is said and done. The Final Patriot to be named Player of the Year was girls soccer star Peyton Costello.

Despite standing at 5’3” and playing the forward position – where you ideally need some height – Costello doesn’t strike you as the most imposing force on a field by measurables. However it’s a different story on the pitch.

Costello was the centerpiece in back-to-back state championship seasons for Ward Melville, capped off by scoring 15 goals with four assists this year as Ward Melville won the state Class AAA championship in a 19-0-3 season.

Peyton’s younger sister, Maddie, was also named to the All-Long Island first team as she was one of many Ward Melville athletes to garner the honor.

Westhampton Beach:

Tennis Superstars Matilda Buchen and Julia Stabile were the doubles team to beat in 2023. They were so good that the duo were named Co-Suffolk County Players of the Year by Newsday for their efforts this fall.

In their final season together – since Stabile will graduate this upcoming spring while Buchen will have one more year to go before graduating in 2025 – The Hurricanes tandem defended their Suffolk individual doubles title and capped a phenomenal season by capturing the NYSPHSAA individual doubles championship.

The Duo were even dynamic in singles play as they split time between singles and doubles in team play – each going 9-0 at singles – as Westhampton reached the county title match. Their record together in doubles was 19-0.

Macchia won the Foot Locker Northeast Regional at Boston’s Franklin Park in 17:13. She won the state Federation championship at Bowdoin Park in Wappingers Falls in 17:59.4, a week after finishing second at the Class A public school state championship in 17:44.3.

The Junior mega-star also won at the Suffolk Division championships, the Suffolk Class A state qualifier, the Eastern States Championship, the Boston Mayor’s Cup and the Nike XC Town Twilight Classic at the Historic Cross Country Course in Terre Haute, Indiana.

Despite losing in the LIC to powerhouse Massapequa, Coach Longo’s Football team saw two of their superstars names to second team All-Long Island.

Cornell-Commit Caden Lesiewicz was named second team following another successful season both as a safety and a kicker. He has become the best kicker in New York State according to some scouting sites while also winning Suffolk County’s Safety of the Year award last fall.

Linebacker Wally Crane also had a big season for the Floyd defense as he anchored their front seven and led them to a Suffolk County championship this fall.

How can my mom sign her health care proxy if she is homebound?

New York State now allows remote witnessing of health care proxies. This innovation is particularly vital for individuals who, due to medical reasons, are unable to safely execute a health care proxy in the direct presence of two witnesses.

A health care proxy allows you to appoint an individual you trust to make health care decisions for you if you are unable to make such decisions for yourself. This can be a family member or a close friend who understands your wishes and values.

New York’s Public Health Law sets forth the requirements for executing a health care proxy.

Under the traditional method, a competent adult may appoint a health care agent by a health care proxy signed and dated by the individual in the presence of two adult witnesses who must also sign the document.

Significantly, Section 2981 of New York’s Public Health Law was recently amended to allow for the remote witnessing of health care proxies using audiovisual technology such as Zoom or FaceTime, provided several conditions are met:

The audio-video conference must allow for direct interaction between the principal and any remote witness; 3. Any remote witness must receive a copy of the health care proxy by facsimile or electronic means within 24 hours of the proxy being signed by the principal during the audio-video conference; and 4. The remote witness must sign the transmitted copy of the proxy and send it back to the

The introduction of remote witnessing marks a significant advancement in New York's health care proxy law. This can be especially helpful in situations where it may be difficult for someone to travel or

meet in person, such as during a pandemic or if an individual has limited mobility. Further, finding suitable witnesses can often be challenging, especially considering the legal limitations on physicians and nurse practitioners acting as health care agents for patients at their

Household Waste is classified as materials that can be placed at the curb for collection including bulk items.
