Changing of the Guard in Suffolk Legislature Ushers in New Presiding Officer

COUNTY

By Barbara LaMonica

The 2022 New Year will usher in a changing of the guard in the Suffolk County Legislature with a new Presiding Officer. The new year also marks the first time Republicans will represent the majority in 17 years after a red wave tsunami turned the tide of power during the November 2 elections. To that end, Suffolk County Legislator Kevin McCaffrey, (who first won election to the Legislature in 2014), is expected to take the helm as the Legislature's Presiding Officer on January 3. In an interview with McCaffrey this week, the Legislator discussed his plans, priorities, and issues that need to be addressed to keep the Legislature on track. "The biggest priority is to maintain fiscal stability," McCaffrey said.

"The county is in a good place right now, and we did receive federal Cares and American Rescue funding since the pandemic. We've solidified our finances by paying down debt and creating a $250 million rainy day fund, and," McCaffrey continued, "there has been a surge in sales tax revenues." This, combined with lawmakers budgeting low, has postured the county on sound financial footing, McCaffrey explained. Further discussing the state of the County's fiscal condition, McCaffrey noted Suffolk's bond rating has increased a notch. "We expect a continued upward trend in sales tax revenues, and we're keeping expenses under control," he added. "Plus," McCaffrey said, "we've taken those lump sums and paid our debt and pension obligations down by $300

million." And while the County sold the Dennison Building to the Dormitory, the municipality has been able to set aside enough funds and will be purchasing Dennison back in two years. Among the challenges McCaffrey foresees as issues that have to be addressed, include "egregious" mortgage tax fees. "We're also going to take a hard look at those red light cameras," McCaffrey said. In addition to them being "a money grab," he said they're prone to causing accidents between motorists. "We're going to look at running the county efficiently while keeping services for residents and keeping county government living within its means, " he said. High on the county's agenda of priorities is a sewer expansion project to the tune of

Don’t Fall for Social Security Administration Telephone Scams

Suffolk County Clerk Judy Pascale

Suffolk County Clerk Judy Pascale would like to bring to the attention of Suffolk County residents a telephone impersonation scheme that exploits the Social Security Administration’s (SSA) reputation and authority. The

Social

Page 3

Security

Administration’s Office of the Inspector General (OIG) continues to receive reports from across the country about fraudulent phone calls from people claiming to be from SSA. Recent reports have indicated that unknown callers are using increasingly threatening language in these calls. The callers state, due to improper or illegal activity with a citizen’s Social Security number (SSN) or account, a citizen will be arrested or face other legal action if they fail to call a provided phone number to address the issue. This is a scam; citizens should not engage with these calls or provide any personal information. According to the Social Security Administration, SSA employees do contact citizens, generally those who have ongoing business with SSA, by telephone for customerservice purposes. However, SSA employees will never threaten

you for information; they will not state that you face potential arrest or other legal action if you fail to provide information. In those cases, the call is fraudulent, and you should just hang up. The OIG recently warned that some of these impersonation calls have “spoofed” SSA’s national customer service phone number, displaying 1-800-772-1213 as the incoming number on caller ID. Residents are urged to be extremely cautious, and to avoid providing information such as your Social Security number or bank account numbers to unknown persons over the phone or internet unless you are certain of who is receiving it. If you receive a suspicious call from someone alleging to be from SSA, you should report that information to the OIG at 1-800269-0271 or online at https://oig. ssa.gov.

$100 million and includes such locations as Mastic and Shirley, Sayville and Oakdale, and portions of Babylon. "Babylon north of the Northern State Parkway has been promised sewers for over 30 years and never got them," McCaffrey said, pointing out that shovel ready projects likely poise the county to receive shared federal funding. Asked about moving his agenda forward working with County Executive Steve Bellone, McCaffrey responded, "I think Steve and I share that we want to keep Suffolk County on good financial footing, we care about the environment and we must preserve as much land as possible, sewers, (but I'm not sure of his alternative wastewater systems), and economic development in the right places because we want to

keep our young people here, and rebuilding our infrastructure." McCaffrey emphasized and underscored his desire to reach across the aisle and work in bipartisan fashion. "When I served as the minority leader, I was known for this (reaching across the aisle), and," McCaffrey added, "there's no democratic or republican way to fill a pothole." As he prepares to step into the role of Presiding Officer, McCaffrey said there will inevitably be personnel changes and appointments, including about 20 to 25 appointments in his office. McCaffrey, who is expected to be voted in as Presiding Officer January 3, said he expects to reach across party lines to get work done. "I think people are tired of polarization and having one side against the other."

Wreaths at Calverton Wreaths Across America at Calverton National Cemetery took place on December 18th with approximately 11,600 wreaths and over 1,500 volunteers who came to Honor and Remember our fallen Hero’s. When placing a wreath, the name of the deceased is said out loud, this is so they will be remembered. The Support Committee for Calverton National Cemetery works tirelessly for months planning this event. Wreaths are allocated through the sponsorship of individuals and corporations. There are over 270,000 graves but unfortunately not everyone can receive a wreath. Every year the Support Committee chose’s different Sections, always rotating the sections so eventually everyone would receive a wreath. The Support Committee is looking for sponsors for next years Wreaths Across America by individuals and Corporations. Maybe one day all the fallen Hero’s will receive a wreath at the same time. If interested in sponsoring Wreaths or for more information on how to volunteer next year, go to the website, Calvertonsupport.com. Not the Wreaths Across America site that will be for general sponsorship not Calverton. The motto is “Never Leave a Man Behind” lets try not to forget one Hero next year.

Eastport Senior Citizen Rental Community Gains Support During Public Meeting

By Andrea Peponakis-Matzner

On Saturday, December 18, 2021, the very well-advertised and preannounced meeting about the planned senior citizen rental community took place at the Eastport American Legion Hall. Every home and business in Eastport received a copy of the South Shore Press newspaper, in advance, notifying them of this meeting. The informational gathering drew approximately 100 community residents and was graciously combined with the Veterans’ Christmas party due to a conflict in scheduling. Prior to the commencement of the presentation, live music was being performed and appetizing trays and trays of delicious food were offered to all guests. Photo layouts of the project were on display for all to view along with handouts listing the benefits of this undertaking. Tim Shea, lawyer for the property owners/project managers of the planned senior citizen rental community Vincent Trapani, Minas Michaelian and Charles Rogers, presented the plans and community benefits of this proposed site development. The 86 unit senior citizen rental community with a clubhouse would only occupy 3 of the 13 acres of land. It would be beautifully landscaped and housed by 55+ senior citizens, Veterans and 10% affordable income families which is what the Town of Brookhaven mandates. The brandnew facility would benefit the entire

L to R: Property Owners/Project Managers Vincent Trapani, Minas Michaelian and Charles Rogers. community by adding $351,000.00 to the school budget, $12,511.00 to the Ambulance Department and $7901.35 to the Fire Department. Improvements would be made to the road on Seatuck Avenue by improving the road itself, creating sidewalks and improving drainage. Local businesses would also benefit from the increased number of shoppers. Downsizing while still living in the same community near family and friends is a huge incentive for many of those who want to see this project come to fruition. The project was well received by most attendees who privately voiced their approval and signed the petition. A handful of rude, very loud, interrupting residents, who are opposed to this project, intimidated other guests to

speak in favor of it. Their behavior was unacceptable, so Tim Shea and the project coordinators preferred to end the meeting cordially and speak with the guests one on one. Vincent, Minas and Charles have a proven track record with similar communities that they are involved with. King Park Manor in Kings Park, Green Plaza in Moriches and The Waterfalls in Lake Ronkonkoma are three of the other communities that have brought them their expertise. This proposed community in Eastport is planned purposefully and intently with attention given to detail and respect for the entire community of Eastport. This was the first of several meetings

about this project. Future meetings will

be publicized once definite dates are set.

Colonial Youth Volunteers Share the Christmas Spirit Services Youth Worker Samantha Soccorso, this year’s expression of the Christmas spirit was quite evident. The Adopt-a-Family program connects sponsors with families to “adopt” during the holiday season. The families are local and supply a wish list for each family member. Each family receives a number to maintain privacy. The sponsor then shops for the gifts and Colonial Youth volunteers pick them up from a designated spot. The parent/ guardian is called to pick up the gifts and wished a very Merry Christmas.

L to R: Cole Schulz, Philip Wildner, Thomas Pirello, Trishelle Cattell and Director Samantha Soccorso help spread the Christmas spirit. By Andrea Peponakis-Matzner

For more than 30 years now, Colonial Youth and Family Services’ leaders and volunteers spread holiday cheer

through its Adopt-a-Family program. Currently led by Executive Director Lynda Zach, Deputy Director Ray Hopp and Colonial Youth and Family

The generosity and good will for 140 families came from the William Floyd School District staff, the Town of Brookhaven, Brookhaven National Laboratory and private donors. The Colonial Youth Volunteer Corps volunteers helped unload the trucks and hand out the gifts. Cole Schulz, Philip Wildner, Thomas Pirello and Trishelle Cattell, to name a few of these volunteers, were beaming with joy knowing that this program makes

these families happy during this time of the year. “The purpose of this program is to make sure that families that have fallen upon difficult times have a wonderful Christmas,” states Samantha Soccorso.

And isn’t this what the holiday season is all about: giving selflessly to others in need. If you are interested in being a part of next year’s Adopt-a-Family, please contact Samantha at (631) 281-4461.

“Trump - The Party of Lincoln” Exceptional Artist Painting by Thompson

Local artist, Elaine Faith Thompson just completed a painting of Presidents Abraham Lincoln and Donald J. Trump. She is producing prints of the painting, for home decor, offices or holiday gifts. It is one of her series of paintings of United States Presidents which include Theodore Roosevelt, George Washington, John F. Kennedy, and now Lincoln and Trump. The next painting in the series will be Ronald Reagan on his horse. Thompson has worked on the “Trump-The Party of Lincoln” painting for months, doing research in libraries and collecting ideas and photographic reference. She also had several models pose, so she could paint all the precise details. The body model for the Trump figure was Suffolk County’s Republican Chairman Jesse Garcia, the hand model for Trump was Thompson’s grandson Army Ranger Jamie Mas, and the

hand model for Lincoln’s hand was Thompson’s son Richard Polizzi. In 2019, Thompson connected with the Trump management people from the Trump National Golf Club

-Bedminster, when she met them at the PGA Championship. That is when she was invited to do a painting of the Bedminster Golf Course, in New Jersey and also produced prints. In the past she has been known for her US Open and PGA golf paintings or her Long Island scenes, the Big Duck and lighthouses. Thompson’s love of history stems from her heritage and family who were the first settlers in Boston. She is a direct descendant of President Ulysses S. Grant and Thomas Jefferson. Her two children are related to John F. Kennedy. Her father, Frank Ryder, a member of the Sons of the American Revolution and was a pioneer in short wave radio in the USA. The website is www.thompsonart. us, however the new paintings are not on it yet. Thompson has a gallery in Bohemia. For hours or info call 516380-7715 or etcreation@optonline.net

SUFFOLK CLOSEUP BY KARL GROSSMAN The Long Island Power Authority board of trustees voted 8-to-1 last week for a new contract with PSEG to operate Long Island’s electric grid. However, that could be superseded by legislation introduced by State Assemblyman Fred W. Thiele, Jr. of Sag Harbor and State Senator James Gaughran of Northport to “restructure” LIPA to be a “true public utility” and operate the grid itself. The legislation, introduced earlier this month, notes that LIPA was established in 1986 by the State Legislature to facilitate the “closure of the Shoreham nuclear power plant” of the Long Island Lighting Company because of the plant “threatening the economy, health and safety…of the service area.” The “second purpose…was to replace LILCO with a publicly owned power authority.” In 1992, the bill goes on, “LIPA bought the Shoreham nuclear power plant” and it was “fully decommissioned in 1994.” And in 1995, “LIPA replaced LILCO as the electric company for its service area.” “However,” the measure continues, “LIPA was never established as a true ‘publicly owned power authority’ as originally envisioned by the State Legislature. Rather, since 1995, LIPA has opted for a third-party management model.”

The South Shore Press • December 22, 2021

Thiele-Gaughran Bill Could Supersede New LIPA-PSEG Contract

“LIPA is the only utility in the nation that is operated under a thirdparty management model. This model has repeatedly failed its customers,” the bill declares. “There has been a lack of transparency, oversight, and accountability. This failure has been most dramatically evidenced in the unacceptable storm response by LIPA and its third-party contractors during Superstorm Sandy in 2012 and Tropical Storm Isaias in 2020.” “After more than 25 years of unsatisfactory management under the third-party management model, a better alternative must be implemented,” it says. The legislature “hereby creates a commission to provide the legislature with the specific actions, legislation, and timeline necessary to restructure LIPA into a true publicly owned power authority….whereby the authority would directly operate the utility as a true public power authority.” Further, “The public must participate in that process so that the new LIPA becomes transparent with proper oversight and accountability.” This Legislative Commission on the Future of the Long Island Power Authority would be made up of four members of the Assembly and four of

Page 9

the Senate. There would be an “advisory board” of “not more than 15” persons with wide-ranging representation “to actively assist and advise the commission.” A “final report” would be issued no later than April 1, 2023. In an interview last week, Mr. Thiele said the “goal” is to have LIPA “restructured” and its third-party manager—in recent years Newark, New Jersey-based PSEG—eliminated in two years’ time. The “timetable” in the bill calls for LIPA restructuring to happen “no later than 2025,” but Mr. Thiele said it could be done much sooner. Mr. Thiele's district includes East Moriches and Center Moriches and parts of Shirley. The Thiele-Gaughran measure was

discussed by LIPA CEO Tom Falcone during the LIPA board meeting and he said LIPA would “work with” the state. Thereafter, the LIPA board voted on a contract to continue with PSEG. The only no vote was cast by trustee Dr. Nancy Goroff, a professor in the Chemistry Department at Stony Brook University. She said the “fundamental problem is it’s a contract with a service provider that has not delivered in the past.” She cited the Thiele-Gaughran bill seeking “municipalization” as preferable “over what we have now.” The other eight trustees voted yes. Among several members of the public providing comments at the LIPA board meeting was Fred Harrison, a long-time

opponent of the Shoreham nuclear power plant, who emphasized a need for “a fully non-profit electric system.” He said the Thiele-Gaughran legislation would lead to LIPA being “what it should have been.” He said “the two Cuomo’s kept us from our goal.” Former Governor Mario Cuomo eliminated having LIPA board trustees elected by Long Islanders, instead having most trustees appointed by the governor and the remainder by Assembly and Senate leaders. Subsequently, his son, Governor Andrew Cuomo, was central, in his characteristic hardball style, in bringing in PSEG to operate the electric grid for LIPA. Ryan Madden, sustainability organizer for the Long Island Progressive Coalition, testified that the bill provides “a roadmap for fully public power. We need a democratic LIPA.” Not only has LIPA lost what was supposed to be its democratic basis. An example of how far LIPA has gotten away from its original purpose of challenging nuclear power came at the board meeting when CEO Falcone spoke about future sources of energy. He said electricity would play a much greater role and referred to solar and wind power and added “we’re going to have nuclear in the future.”

THE BETTOR ANGLE

TM

BY TOM BARTON With rumors swirling that Daniel Jones will be out as the starting QB of the Giants next year the speculation has begun that Russell Wilson could be the man to replace him. People that are close to Wilson have said that he would waive his no trade clause to come to the Big Apple, and it makes sense. It makes sense for Wilson, who has been stuck in the Pacific Northwest for years. It makes sense for his profile, for his wife, and for his legacy. Wilson could walk into the Giants facility with nothing but upside. If he wins, he's revered as a man who won at two stops, one of the few. He brings up a class organization, and immediately becomes the face of sports in the

biggest city in the world. There is nothing but upside for Wilson. For the Giants though, there are questions. On the surface bringing in a sure fire Hall of Fame QB just about in his prime to stabilize a position that is of dire need makes total sense. He will be the headline name they need, the personality that this organization is lacking, and the fans would be reenergized. On the field Wilson should elevate the play of not only himself but of Barkley, the receiving core and give the team a jolt of confidence as well. There seems to be nothing but upside. There is a downside though. First it's the cost. Wilson won't come

THE ROTOMILL BY CHUCK T.

As we enter Week 15 of the football season the playoff/post season picture comes into sharper view. And of course, it is little wonder that the best and stingiest team defenses are leading the way. For fans of the Kansas City Chiefs, and for those Pat Mahomes haters who truly fear this guy, the rebound of the Kansas City defense is scaring opponents. As we saw this past Thursday night, Travis Kelce and Pat Mahomes are two strong hands to play for the stretch run as Kelce dominated the Chargers defense with 191 receiving yards and clutch TD catches. If the Chiefs defense keeps them in close games, Mahomes is deadly and capable of pulling off any late TD drive to win a game. I would play Mahomes over any other QB in DFS for the stretch drive here and this is fantasy football gold until the end of the season and through the playoffs. Entering the Week 15 contests, the stingiest defenses to score against have been in order, New England Patriots (9-4), Denver Broncos (7-6), Buffalo Bills (7-6),

Fantasy Sports

Arizona Cardinals (10-3) and the surprise of the bunch the Seattle Seahawks (5-8). The Seahawks defense was a disaster early in the season frequently allowing over 400 yards almost every game and their average yards allowed at 394 per game is the worst of these defenses. Their points allowed gives them away as a team defense I would not hesitate to play my quarterback against. Pete Carroll coached teams can always be respected on defense, but he clearly does not have the personnel this year, and they look likely to drop in the final 3 weeks of the season. They finish out the season against the Bears, Lions and Arizona Cardinals and the Bears and Lions are soft matchups. The Patriots are in a season which demonstrates why Bill Belichick is the best coach in the business. He has rebuilt their team defense into the stingiest team to score points against in the NFL and they hold a 2-game lead in their division with a rookie QB at the helm. Mac Jones has completed 70.3% of his passes and this is the best mark recorded

Let Russ Cook in New York cheap. That means compensation to Seattle and his salary. Matt Stafford, who is the same age as Wilson, did not have the stats or winning resume, was traded for two first rounders, a 3rd rounder and Jared Goff. The Seahawks will ask for more than that. Think in the realm of Daniel Jones, three or even four first rounders. Ouch. Then there is the salary. We have watched highly paid QB's limit their teams ability to sign big free agents. Brees, Rodgers, and even now Wilson are all products of that. Wilson is also a small stature player and I doubt we see him playing healthy into his late 30's. So, on the surface every Giant

fan should be ecstatic about the possibility of Russ cooking in New York, but be cautious because what

it might take to land that chef, might cost the entire restaurant.

It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year about this, but I give the edge to the Cardinals. I like their defense better and Murray is becoming a revelation in his 3rd season and he missed 4 games this year due to injury. A fantastic defense gives you the cushion to withstand an extended absence for your QB.

by a rookie QB in the last 20 years. And it satisfies a requisite to play QB for the Patriots’ coach. And there is not a hotter team with 7 consecutive wins going into their matchup with the Colts in Week 15. I would wager in DFS on both the Patriots team defense and I would wager on Mac Jones. I don’t expect him to be confined to just 3 pass attempts as he was in their 14-10 defeat of the Buffalo Bills, but Belichick has been putting in out of the norm game

plans for decades now. Always bet on his team defenses. I am going to make my early Super Bowl prediction now. The #3 team defense in points allowed so far is the Arizona Cardinals and coupled with the multi-dimensional threat of Kyler Murray looks like the strongest favorite to come out of the NFC and oppose Pat Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs. Hell yes Tom Bray and the Tampa Bay Bucs are going to have something to say

Not to be left out amongst the top 5 defenses are the Denver Broncos and the Buffalo Bills. Denver has to close out the season against Joe Burrow, Derek Carr, Justin Herbert and Pat Mahomes. This is a brutal stretch for any team defense to go up against. It doesn’t look likely that Denver will finish up as the #2 team defense this year. The Buffalo Bills team defense finishes up their season against the New York Jets. While the Jets will be inspired to play the role of playoff spoiler versus a divisional opponent, I expect the Bills to shut out the Jets. I want to see the price on Fan Duel that gets sets for the Bills team defense that final week. I see a shutout of the Jets getting the Bills into the playoffs and giving them a ton of momentum into the playoffs.

ASK NANCY BY NANCY BURNER, ESQ.

Who is Entitled to a Copy of a Trust?

Q: Who is Entitled to a Copy of a Trust? A:

Besides the trust creator, the trustee(s) and the beneficiaries are entitled to a copy of a trust. Upon creation of the trust, the trustees must have a copy of the trust to carry out their role as custodian and distributor of the assets. In New York State, a trustee has no obligation to provide a copy of the trust to beneficiaries unless asked to do so.

A trustee should provide a copy of the trust, along with contact information of the trustee, to the current beneficiaries of the trust. This way the beneficiary is aware of how they may receive distributions. Moreover, the trustee has a duty of loyalty to the beneficiaries of the trust. A current beneficiary of

a trust may receive a copy of the trust by simply asking the trustee. A current or direct beneficiary is someone entitled to distributions of trust income or principal in the present. Some beneficiaries are contingent - meaning they only inherit upon the passing of an event. For example, a grantor may name a child as beneficiary of a trust and a grandchild to inherit upon passing of their parent. The grandchild is a contingent beneficiary. The grandchild may have the right to receive a copy of the trust if the trust is irrevocable, but not if revocable. Upon termination of the trust, remainder beneficiaries are entitled to notice of such termination and a copy of the trust.

If a trustee fails to provide a copy of the trust, a written demand letter should be sent to the trustee(s), reiterating the request. If the trustee

If someone does not know if they are a named beneficiary, they can make a written request to the trustee. After receiving a copy of the trust, a beneficiary should review it with an attorney. The beneficiary should consider if it is necessary to compel the trustee to provide an accounting or compel a distribution of the trust assets. An experienced trust and estate attorney can explain the terms of a trust and whether you are entitled to distributions. - Nancy Burner, Esq.

ON THE SEA BY VINCENT PICA, COMMODORE

First District, Southern Region (D1SR) United States Coast Guard Auxiliary

With Thanksgiving and Chanukah behind us now, and Christmas, it is a good time for all those who stand a watch and wait for the return of those that went to sea to think about being the “safety officer” before they go! And, skipper, how about the love you have for those that go to sea with you – kids, grandkids and mates – and creating the safest environment aboard that is feasible or possible?

From the Heart to the Head

There is no doubt that even the most grizzled seafarer can benefit from a boating safety class. Regulations do change over time and techniques get refined and advanced. The United States Coast Guard Auxiliary Division-18 covers all of “Out East”, from William Floyd out to the ends of both forks. Want to find out what, where and when the latest boating safety classes are – email me below and I’ll look it up for you or go right to the web and find out - http://wow.uscgaux. info/peclass.php?unit=014-18 With COVID, we’ve gone virtual – but the benefits are real!

From Stem to Stern

There is no greater “for free” service

available than the free vessel safety check. And, this is not a regulatory event like getting your car inspected. If the boat doesn’t meet all the Federal standards, nothing bad happens (like not being able to drive your car since the inspection sticker was scrapped off.) Most likely, the USCGAux examiner will give you their cell phone number and ask you to call them when you’ve addressed the deficiency – most likely an expired flare package. And both exams are free! Want to schedule one? Email me below and I’ll look it up for you or go right to the web and find out http://wow.uscgaux.info/content. php?unit=V-DEPT&category=i-wanta-vsc As with boating safety classes, we’ve had to make adaptations to protect you and the Vessel Examiner – but again the benefits are real!

Nothing Lighter – or More Valuble

The statistics on life jackets are sobering for those that don’t use them. For every 16 boaters that go into the water that don’t have life jackets on, only 1 comes out. Conversely, if they had a life jacket on, 15 come out. What population do you want your boater to be in? And, if they are the inflatable

Page 17

Ho-Ho-Ho! For the Boaters You Love, and It's No Laughing Matter lashed to the helm. They can’t even walk a couple of feet across the deck to fetch a landing net for one of his fellow boaters. But now there are “wireless lanyards” on the market! The helmsman can walk all over the boat – just don’t leave it! Now, that is a major safety uptick! Check on the internet or with any major chandlery. Other great gift ideas to help keep boaters safe include: • Emergency signaling kits -- flares, signal mirror, whistle, etc. • Up-to-date navigational charts and/ or a handheld GPS unit kind they hardly know that they have them on! And don’t forget that the USCGAux is sponsoring a “Kids Don’t Float” program. We leave life jackets at various cooperating marinas and you can borrow them for the day – on the honor system solely – for your favorite price – Free!

The Silent Killer – Carbon Monoxide

If your boat has any enclosed spaces, they need a Carbon Monoxide Detector. For about $30 at any major retailer like Home Depot, etc., you

have the wake-up call that otherwise wouldn’t come. Just make sure you buy a maritime version. Domestic ones don't last in a marine environment.

The Wireless “Kill Switch”

Every boat comes with a lanyard that is tied to the helmsman’s belt or life jacket and also back to the ignition switch. If the helmsman falls over boat, the lanyard goes with him and the engine stops, along with the boat. This gives the boater the chance to climb back aboard. But no one uses the lanyard because the helmsman is

• Navigation tools and calculators • Hand-held VHF marine radio with extra batteries • Show your love – for the crew and the skipper. BTW, if you are interested in being part of USCG Forces, email me at joinuscgaux@aol.com or go direct to the D1SR Human Resources department, who are in charge of new members matters, at DSO-HR and we will help you “get in this thing…”

OF MEN & ANGELS BY DOMINICK FORTE Angels are traditionally placed on the top of Christmas trees to represent their role in the birth of Jesus. An angel visited Mary to announce that she would give birth to the Son of God, the Savior of the world. The same angel appeared to her husband Joseph in a dream to tell him that Mary’s conception of a child was from the Holy Spirit. And angels appeared in the sky above Bethlehem to celebrate the birth of Jesus and announce it to the shepherds in the field. The numerous interventions which Gabriel undertook throughout history were manifestations of God’s boundless love for us. Gabriel was the most called upon of all of His messengers. As His intermediary Gabriel had a continuous impact on the history of the human race. Gabriel was always happy to serve the Creator. On one of

his missions, he approached the venerable priest Zechariah who was in service in the Temple of the Lord. When the archangel announced to the priest that his barren wife Elizabeth would give birth to a son, he was met with disbelief. Gabriel was stunned at the priest’s hesitation and in a fit of righteous wrath reprimanded him. “I am Gabriel sent from God. It is not me you doubt but God who sent me.” Gabriel’s punishment for the priest’s lack of faith was harsh but it served a purpose. By striking him mute it gave Zechariah the chance to become introspective and focus on the message from God. Gabriel imposed on him a nine-month spiritual retreat via a verbal fast. The prophetic words of Gabriel came to pass and his newborn son was given the name John as were the archangel’s instructions. John,

Gabriel led the song which inspired the angels who appeared over a field of sleeping sheep herders. When he appeared to them the glory of the Lord shone over them and they were terribly afraid. “Don’t be afraid. This day in David’s town your savior was born—Christ the Lord. You will find a baby wrapped in swaddling clothes and lying in a manger.”

cousin to Jesus, would grow to announce the Kingdom of God, baptize in His name, and prepare the way for the Savior. Of course, Gabriel’s most important mission was his visit to a young maiden in the obscure town of Nazareth. This was the

mission that changed the world. Mary was seen by the townsfolk as an ordinary person doing ordinary things. But God saw her differently. According to the Song of Songs, she was a woman, “coming forth as the dawn, as beautiful as the

Suddenly a great army of heaven’s angels appeared with Gabriel singing praises to God: “Glory to God in the highest and peace on earth to people of good will.” Spurred on by the angels this unlikely group of rustics were in essence the first evangelists as, after visiting the Christ child, they heralded the joyous news of the birth of the Savior.

It’s That Time of Year Again !!!!

ASK MICHELLE “Your Family Therapist”

BY MICHELLE CAVALERI, LCSW-R

Wedding Officiant & NYS Divorce Mediator

HOLIDAYS BRING ON – “EUSTRESS”

In our everyday lives, we all experience stress. The manner in which stress affects us depends upon how we chose to think, use and respond to stress. Simply put, stress is the body’s response to changes that create taxing demands on us! Contrary to what most folks think, stress does not always have to be “negative”, as there are two types of stress: DISTRESS - the most commonly referred to – is negative stress – usually manifesting in maladaptive behaviors! Folks under constant distress are more likely to become ill, mentally or physically. EUSTRESS - or positive stress, is healthy and gives us a feeling of fulfillment; it is stress that provides us with focus and give us our “competitive edge”.

As the HOLIDAY SEASON is upon us, I thought it fitting to share some insight regarding the two types of stress I have identified. This will not only help you to “make it through” the Holidays, but will allow you to “truly enjoy” them as well! Since the body itself cannot physically determine eustress from distress - I have provided some helpful information to make you more aware of the types/source of your stress – resulting in your ability to “bring yourself through” negatives and “bring about more positives”!

• Vacation planning • Retiring

EXAMPLES OF DISTRESS • Job insecurity

• Financial constraints • Workplace conflicts • Divorce • Poor health

DISTRESS CHARACTERISTICS

• Motivates & directs energy

• Decreases personal performance

Now that you have a better understanding as to what the effects of “good and bad” stress can do – here’s a few examples of each to help you recognize them through this Season.

• Improves personal performance • Keeps you vital & excited about life

• Feels uncomfortable - sometimes “evil” • Can be short or long-term

• HOLIDAY SEASONS

• Is short-term • Perceived as within your coping abilities

• May result in mental and physical problems

EUSTRESS CHARACTERISTICS

Page 19

• Causes anxiety or worry

EXAMPLES OF EUSTRESS • Marriage • Having a child

Change is constant and each stressful event in our lives is an opportunity to practice new ways of responding. Because you now realize that stress is natural and inevitable, you can challenge yourself to harness its motivating power to create positive change, rather than allow it to have an adverse effect on you and exhaust your emotional and physical resources! ENJOY THE HOLIDAYS BY EMBRACING ANY EUSTRESS THAT COMES ALONG WITH IT!!!

requires that we send you this notice about the foreclosure process. Please read it carefully. Summons and Complaint You are in danger of losing your home. If you fail to respond to the summons and complaint in this foreclosure action, you may lose your home. Please read the summons and complaint carefully. You should immediately contact an attorney or your local legal aid office to obtain advice on how to protect yourself. Sources of Information and Assistance The State encourages you to become informed about your options in foreclosure. In addition to seeking assistance from an attorney or legal aid office, there are government agencies and nonprofit organizations that you may contact for information about possible options, including trying to work with your lender during this process. To locate an entity near you, you may call the toll-free helpline maintained by the New York State Department of Financial Services at (800) 342-3736 or visit the Department’s website at http://www.dfs.ny.gov. Rights and Obligations YOU ARE NOT REQUIRED TO LEAVE YOUR HOME AT THIS TIME. You have the right to stay in your home during the foreclosure process. You are not required to leave your home unless and until your property is sold at auction pursuant to a judgment of foreclosure and sale. Regardless of whether you choose to remain in your home, YOU ARE REQUIRED TO TAKE CARE OF YOUR PROPERTY and pay property taxes in

accordance with state and local law. Foreclosure Rescue Scams Be careful of people who approach you with offers to “save” your home. There are individuals who watch for notices of foreclosure actions in order to unfairly profit from a homeowner’s distress. You should be extremely careful about any such promises and any suggestions that you pay them a fee or sign over your deed. State law requires anyone offering such services for profit to enter into a contract which fully describes the services they will perform and fees they will charge, and which prohibits them from taking any money from you until they have completed all such promised services.
