Plans for Modern Library System Step Closer to Reality

The dream of modern library facilities to serve the residents of Mastic, Shirley and Moriches takes a step closer to reality every day as an ambitious plan to upgrade buildings and technology moves forward.

Progress reports on the many facets of the $22.7 million project have become a team effort with the library trustees, staff, designers and engineers keeping the public abreast with regular updates. When all is said and done, residents will enjoy a completely renovated main library and new satellite branches in the hamlets served by the system.

“Our library is in the midst of one of the most comprehensive and significant construction and renovation projects ever undertaken in its history,” said Trustee President Mike Dubois, who is serving as a board liaison to the design team along with Trustee Wendy Gross.

“The library staff, trustees, and management are all excited about these projects and what they will do to benefit our community.”

Design work for the facilities has focused on health-related issues in light of the COVID pandemic including: HVAC systems with advanced filtration and ionization capabilities Moveable meeting space to accommodate different sized groups Mobile furniture and shelving to allow for social distancing Automated book return system, pick up lockers and quarantine areas to sanitize library assets Maximizing outdoor spaces

Colonial Youth and Family Services, which operates out of the Little Red School House in Moriches, will provide services from the Knights of Columbus hall on Madison Avenue in Mastic, said Rosalia, who is working on securing state and Brookhaven Town permits to utilize the space.

According to Trustee Nancy Marks, the projects will incorporate the LEED concept for energy savings.

“LEED stands for Standard Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, a green building certification program used worldwide,” Marks pointed out. Developed by the nonprofit U.S. Green Building Council, LEED includes a set of rating systems for the design, construction, operation, and maintenance of green buildings to help make sure they are environmentally responsible and use resources efficiently.

The planners are also addressing upgrades to the waste systems for the buildings to prevent excess nitrogen from entering into the region’s water supply, especially the Forge River watershed. According to Rosalia, the library is looking to $350,000 in funding from Suffolk County for innovative and alternative onsite waste management options to replace the traditional septic systems used throughout the peninsula.

Marks, along with the other four library trustees overseeing the effort, focused on the need to stay within budget and deliver the projects at the lowest possible cost. “We are all taxpayers and are here to make sure we get our money’s worth,” she said.

“A nice thing I have seen as a member of the board is the working relationship between the library and Colonial Youth and other community groups,” Marks said. “We’re working together for our children and our community by combining and coordinating services. Whether it’s the Knights of Columbus, Colonial Youth, the library—it’s great to see teamwork among people.”

Assisting the library is Assemblyman Joe DeStefano who secured state funding to expand WIFI services to local residents and a $50,000 grant for the annex improvements on Neighborhood Road. “Libraries are the focal point of our communities,” the Assemblyman said. “These are places where people gather for information, where children of all ages come to gain knowledge, whether it’s to help them at school, or learn about things that are interesting to them. Adults come here to meet, for events; to learn about different things that are going on in the community, whether it’s law enforcement, or education, or just get together with other people. This is the place where people get together and quench their thirst for knowledge.”

“Primary to the library’s mission,” Rosalia noted, “is a safe environment for our patrons, more room and efficient use of space, more room for collections, better technology and just a better atmosphere for the residents when they visit.”

Mastic Beach Satellite Branch, 369 Neighborhood Road: Adding 3,000 square feet to the former village hall building for a total of 7,000 of library space; includes outdoor programming in space across the street made possible through a Suffolk land lease secured through the efforts of Legislator Rudy Sunderman and funds from Assemblyman Joe DeStefano. The building will be renovated, not demolished.

Moriches Satellite Branch, 201 Montauk Highway: Final approval is pending with the state to create 7,000 square feet of space on property made available from the William Floyd School District. New sanitary systems will be installed and the Old

Quonset huts on the property will be demolished. The district has applied for a $125,000 Dormitory Authority of the State of New York grant to offset the cost of purchasing the building.

Little Red School House, 201 Montauk Highway Moriches: Constructed in 1925, the community joined together in asking that the beloved school building be preserved.

The 9,000 square foot space will be renovated and made available to Colonial Youth and Family Services which has secured $100,000 for the project with the help of Assemblyman Tony Palumbo.

Completion of the two new satellite branches is expected in the first quarter of 2022 and when they are complete, renovation of the main library will begin as the branches will be used for library services. William Floyd High School senior Jezayd Hall has been selected as the latest recipient of the “Thomas Cutinella Memorial Foundation Service Award” presented by Long Island Beach Radio 101.7 as part of its “Tour for 54” efforts of recognizing high school students or programs that exemplify the characteristics of kindness, modesty, selflessness and care for their community and others.

During his athletic career, he has earned various accolades including playing in the prestigious Long Island Lacrosse Showcase three times, being named a Top 50 player by the Long Island Lacrosse Journal, a Newsday top 100 player for 2020 and one of Newsday’s Top 50 “Players to Watch” as a junior and senior. He is also a two-year lacrosse team

“Jezayd Hall epitomizes character, leadership and the team-first mentality,” said Desmond Megna, head coach of the William Floyd boys’ varsity lacrosse team. “He has always done what I ask of him regardless of how it may affect any personal goals or achievements in an effort to provide his teammates with increased chances for success.

Jezayd has accepted a college scholarship to play lacrosse for the Division I, nationally-ranked Albany Great Danes in the fall of 2021. Although undecided on his major at the moment, he is considering pursuing a degree in business.

The Thomas Cutinella Memorial Foundation Service Award is given in honor of Thomas Cutinella, a 16year old Shoreham-Wading River High School student-athlete who suffered a fatal injury in a football game in 2014. Since 2016, Beach Radio and the “Tour for 54” have been honoring high school students and programs who best exemplify Thomas Cutinella and his legacy.

SCPD Updates Operational Changes Due to Rise in COVID-19 Infection Rate

In response to the increase in COVID-19 cases, the Suffolk County Police Department is once again enacting operational changes in an effort to limit personto-person contact beginning on December 14.

Listing on the National Register recognizes the importance of these properties to the history of our country, and provides them with a measure of protection. The Mary E. Bell House was listed on the

The historic Mary E. Bell House, located at 66 Railroad Avenue, was built in 1872 by Selah Smith. Mr. Smith, from Huntington, built the two-story house where he lived with his wife and daughters. Mary E. Bell (née Smith) inherited the house after her father’s death and played a central role in her church and community. The property sat just two-doors down from the Moriches AME Church. Founded in the early 1840s by Mr. Abraham Perdue, a freed slave, the Moriches AME church played a pivotal role in the African-American community and as the congregation continued to grow, so did the community’s number of black landowners.

Finally, Results of Election 2020 Are In

BY KARL GROSSMAN Finally, the results are in. It turned out to be an Election Month, not the normal Election Day with a night on which results are available. But the COVID-19 pandemic has caused havoc in all human activities. In Suffolk like all over the United States, it took weeks to count the absentee ballots mailed in or dropped off by voters who didn’t want to go in-person to polling places on Election Day.

Still, weeks later, an analysis of the finally final results in Suffolk provides messages. There was no “blue wave” here—a landslide that Democrats hoped for. Still, nationally, Donald Trump’s loss in the popular vote was significant. In Suffolk, his margin was 232 votes. It was 381,021 for Joe Biden for president and 381,253 for incumbent Trump, basically a tie here. “A huge difference,” commented Southampton Town Democratic Chairman Gordon Herr, “from 2016 when he led by 50,000 votes” in Suffolk.

With the victories of the four, Suffolk Republican Chairman Jesse Garcia declared, the Suffolk delegation “comprises 20% of the State Senate GOP Conference.”

You wouldn’t know that from the returns for the four State Senate seats—all won by Republicans.

Winners (newcomers first) were: in the lst Senatorial District, Anthony Palumbo of New Suffolk; in the 2nd Mario Mattera of St. James; in the 3rd Alexis Weik of Sayville; and then reelected in the 4th, Phil Boyle of Bay Shore.

The biggest surprise in the State Senate contests was Ms. Weik’s win over Democratic incumbent Monica Martinez of Brentwood, a former teacher, assistant school principal and for five years a member of the Suffolk Legislature. With her election in 2018, Ms. Martinez became the first woman from Suffolk to ever have become a member of the State Senate. Now Ms. Weik, who has been Islip Town receiver of taxes, becomes the second.

The loss in the 1st Congressional District of Democrat Nancy Goroff of Stony Brook against three-term Republican incumbent Lee Zeldin of Shirley—there were 205,715 votes for Mr. Zeldin and 169,294 for Dr. Goroff—casts questions about that race.

The central theme of Dr. Goroff, a chemistry professor at Stony Brook University on leave as chair of its Chemistry Department, was her being a scientist. Her campaign literature and posters heralded the word scientist—as in Vote for Scientist Nancy Goroff. Science is extremely important, critical on the climate crisis and COVID-19 pandemic.

She got the nomination by narrowly winning a Democratic primary over Perry Gershon of East Hampton and Suffolk Legislator Bridget Fleming of Noyac.

Mr. Gershon had run against Mr. Zeldin two years ago and came close.

He received 127,991 votes against 139,027 for Mr. Zeldin, 47% of the vote compared to 51.5% for Mr. Zeldin. Dr.

Goroff this year received 45.1% and Mr. Zeldin upped his vote percentage to 54.9% Upon losing in 2018, Mr. Gershon’s embarked on a strategy that worked well in the lst C.D. in the past. Otis Pike of Riverhead never stopped running after he lost to incumbent Stuyvesant Wainright of Wainscott back in 1958.

For two years, he went to numerous civic and community group events in the district aiming to get people to know him. And in 1960 Mr. Pike defeated four-term GOP incumbent Wainright, and held the position for 18 years, longer than anyone since the lst C.D. seat was established in 1789.

Mr. Gershon had been working hard to pull “another Otis Pike”—but then came the primary this June. In the three-way contest, he was edged out after months of meeting people and holding a series of town meetings in the district. Would it have been more effective for Democrats to go with Mr. Gershon and his face-to-face, personal strategy?

There was an outcome in a race for Southampton Town justice that ran against the grain of what’s become conventional political strategy in Suffolk. Karen M. Sartain of Westhampton, appointed this year to fill a vacant judgeship, won her first election running on just the Democratic line. She beat GOPer Patrick J. Gunn who ran on the Republican, Conservative, Working Families and Independence Party lines. A political belief in Suffolk for decades has been that it’s critical in winning for a major party candidate to also have minor party lines. Ms. Sartain showed this is not always true.

Ok well, Giants fans aren’t exactly saying stop the season with a playoff berth in sight but I don’t really need to see anymore to take one thing away from the New York Giants in 2020. Joe Judge is the right choice to lead this team.

Judge was sort of an unknown when he was selected to lead this group. He was getting rave reviews from those around the league but his short resume publicly raised some eyebrows with

the fans. Those eyebrows being raised have turned to glasses being raised in toasting the new head man in charge. What Judge has done has not been overlooked by the book makers as he is currently sitting at 5th as a betting favorite. The 9 to 1 number is pretty remarkable considering Judge lost his best player so early in the year. When Barkley went down so did most hopes of a playoff run but Judge pressed on and motivated his team. Since then he has lost numerous receivers and other players

With Thanksgiving behind us now, and Christmas and Chanukah around the corner, it is a good time for all those who stand a watch and wait for the return of those that went to sea to think about being the “safety officer” before they go! And, skipper, how about the love you have for those that go to sea with you – kids, grandkids and mates – and creating the safest environment aboard that is feasible or possible?

From the Heart to the Head

There is no doubt that even the most grizzled seafarer can benefit from a boating safety class. Regulations do change over time and techniques get refined and advanced. The United States Coast Guard Auxiliary Division-18 covers all of “Out East”, from William Floyd out to the ends of both forks. The Silent Killer – Carbon Monoxide

If your boat has any enclosed spaces, they need a Carbon Monoxide Detector. For about $30 at any major retailer like Home Depot, etc., you have the wake-up call that otherwise wouldn’t come.

The Wireless “Kill Switch”

Every boat comes with a lanyard that is tied to the helmsman’s belt or life jacket and also back to the ignition switch. If the helmsman falls over boat, the lanyard goes with him and the engine stops, along with the boat. This gives the boater the chance to climb back aboard. But no one uses the lanyard because the helmsman is lashed to the helm. They can’t even walk a couple of feet across the deck to fetch a landing net for one of his fellow boaters. But now there are “wireless lanyards” on the market!

The helmsman can walk all over the boat – just don’t leave it! Now,

that is a major safety uptick! Check on the internet or with any major chandlery.

The Invisible Wound Moral Injury: Part Two

VETERANS WAY

BY REV. FREDERICK MILLER. PH.D. Moral Injury, like PTSD, often does not always develop its symptoms right away.

It is true some servicemen will show symptoms right away and be admitted to the hospital, or some commit suicide. In many cases the injury is buried in the back of the mind for long periods of time. Those that do not show symptoms at time of discharge from the service or within two years of discharge are presently not eligible for claims of disability connected to military service. Yet the actual symptoms may not show for years. Often the Veteran will come home, find a job and become very involved in the job and family. All the Veteran’s time and mind are devoted to the job and family. When the job or family became boring or lost (the empty nest) the Veteran’s mind and

thinking often goes into a guilt complex, which builds up to where they recall the guilt or shame problems from their active duty.

The best treatment for Moral Injury is by the support with other veterans, either one on one or in a group.

Listening is important. If possible have the veteran tell his story, or write his story.

As stated before, one of the causes of the Moral Injury is the killing of the enemy or witnessing an act against their moral beliefs. At that point you can explain some Scriptures to him. First and most important is explaining the Commandment “You shall not kill.” (Exodus 20:13 and Deuteronomy 5:17).

However, the Commandment is “You shall not Murder” and what the difference is between killing and murder. The Hebrew language employs

several words to express the idea, to kill. The verb used here can only mean

murder. Murder is a crime, while killing is done with some form of justification, such as being directed to do so in war, or to save you or someone else’s life. For

example Moses saw an Egyptian beating a Hebrew so he killed him. Yet God

called him to lead His people.

(Exodus 2:1-12) In Exodus 17:4-13, Moses orders Joshua to war against the Analects to save his people. Just about everybody knows the story

of David and Goliath. There was a war between Israel and the Philistines. The Philistines had a champion named Goliath who the Israel fighters were all afraid of and would not fight.

David, a very young man, runs toward the battle line to meet Goliath. Then he kills Goliath with one stone from his sling. He then cuts off Goliath’s head. The Philistines saw this and ran.

David not only becomes a king, but in the book of Matthew we are told that Jesus is the son of David and Abraham comes from the line of David (Matthew 1:1). Then in Acts 7:5760, 8:1 Paul witnesses and approves of the stoning of Stephen, but still God makes Paul one of His top apostles.

Thus, even though Moses, David and even possibly Paul killed someone they did not murder them.

We were

taught to love our enemies, but those we fight in war are not our enemies but rather our country’s enemies.

Ecclesiastes 3:3 states “a time to kill and a time to heal” and in Verse 8 “a time for war and a time for peace.” When we explain these facts to the person suffering from Moral Injury we are explaining that what they did was not immoral.

The Christmas Miracle

BY ROBERT CHARTUK One holiday season, my friend, The Took, and I decided to sell Christmas trees for some extra cash. We secured a lot on a busy road in Flanders complete with a 55-gallon drum to make a cozy fire that we could huddle around and keep warm. Better yet, we had a box truck and trailer to drive upstate to buy the trees cheap and bring them down to Long Island to make our killing. What could go wrong?

The trip north to Lake Placid was uneventful, our obedient trailer following behind. We would stay overnight and hit a tree farm a few miles south of the Canadian border in the morning. A single Christmas tree is relatively light, maybe 30 pounds plump from the farm. But when 200 of them gang up on you, you’re looking at three tons.

The farmhands were either as clueless as we were or devious since they loaded up the trailer with the bulk of the trees making it much heavier than the few dozen they tossed in the back of the truck. We pulled out with quite an unbalanced load, the trailer tires squashed from the burden.

On Interstate 87 outside Schroon Lake in the heart of the Adirondacks, one of the trailer tires started to whine and blew out causing it to sway wildly. The overburdened trailer fish-tailed the truck and our hearts were in our throats as The Took wrestled us to the apron. Rooting around the cab, we couldn’t find the jack, which didn’t matter

anyway, because we carried no spare.

Standing there on the side of the road in the middle of nowhere we made an amazing discovery: down below on the service road was a gas station with a gleaming new wrecker. We bolted down and the man said he wasn’t very busy and could come up and give it a look. Luck was back in our corner as the tow truck guy was not only able to jack up the trailer and remove the flat, but also replace both tires with brand new ones in stock from the service station. We were back on our way, but not before throwing off every single tree to the side of the road and repacking them in a more balanced manner. People driving by must have thought we were nuts. Through the rest of the trip, over the various bridges and potholes of New York City, 315 miles in all, our eyes were glued to the rearview mirrors as we watched those whirling black donuts roll our precious cargo home.

The next day was a flurry of activity at the Christmas tree lot with two entrepreneurs making signs and stands for their fragrant wares. We offered gorgeous balsam firs, scotch pines, and spruces, not to mention pine roping and wreaths. After a long day and a couple of happy customers, we were settling around our warm barrel when we heard a couple of pops like fire crackers going off. We didn’t think much of it until a few minutes later when police

descended like locusts on the auto body shop across the street. The owner was shot dead, the assailant vanishing into the night.

Two detectives stepped past the yellow crime scene tape to question us. “Did you see anyone with a gun?” “No.” “Did you see anyone across the street?” “No.” “Did you see anything suspicious?” “No.” They looked at us with wary eyes. “How is it that someone

gets shot right across the street and you didn’t see anything?”

“Well, we did hear it.”

“You heard it! What did you hear?”

“We heard the shots. Sounded like firecrackers.”

“How many shots?” the interrogation continued.

“Three,” we said in harmony.

“What did you see after that?”

harmony.

“Nothing. We thought it was firecrackers.” The detectives looked at each other and shook their heads. The police set up a roadblock and were scrutinizing every driver passing through. Some were directed into our parking lot for further questioning.

Needless to say, Christmas tree sales slowed to nothing, though one state trooper came back with his pickup and bought one. The next day we were back in business, though people seemed hesitant to stop with all the police tape still fluttering in the breeze. I was warming my hands by the fire when The Took snuck up behind me and popped a plastic bag by my head. It scared the crap out of me and I chased after him through the trees. Night started to fall and our Charlie Brown lot, lit up by a couple of strings of light bulbs, looked quaint. We didn’t have any sales on the day, but it sure smelled good.

“Flanders Under Siege From Christmas Sniper,” the newspapers blared the next morning. On consecutive nights, two men were targeted. The first was killed by a small caliber rifle, shot in the head. The gunman even killed his dog. The second had his two middle fingers blown off by a shotgun blast as he sat watching TV with his hands clasped behind his head. Motorists sped by the tree lot, not even looking our way.

Admittedly, the part of Flanders where we set up shop was no Marvin Gardens. It’s primarily a low-income area and before the Christmas Sniper struck, the people were very friendly to us. We delivered a few trees and even received tips from customers who appeared barely able to afford it. Right away, the chatter turned to drugs and it was assumed that the victims were wrapped up in something unsavory.

The police were playing it close to the vest and the greater Flanders area took to the mattresses. Still, we stayed at the tree farm to guard against the looting and mayhem we were certain would occur had we left our post. On the third day of our ill-fated enterprise, we had only a single visitor: a salesman offering quickie pistol licenses and some cheap handguns. We politely said no, not divulging the fact we already had some firepower: a 12-gauge shotgun and a .22 rifle stashed under the wreaths. To be continued...

Suddenly, we heard a few more explosions, this time a little further down the street. I looked at The Took with an expression that wondered, “What-theheck-was-that?” Sure enough, it was gunshots and the police closed off the street once again. Same two dicks paid us a visit.
