Governor Hochul Announces Mask Protocol Now in Effect, New FAQ Resource Available and common areas in residential buildings. Posters encouraging people to wear masks and get vaccinated are available for businesses to use here and here.

Masks Now Required in All Indoor Public Places Unless Businesses or Venues Implement a Vaccine Requirement Governor Kathy Hochul today announced that the mask protocol for all indoor public places announced Friday is now in effect, as well as a new Frequently Asked Questions resource on the State Government’s Website for business owners and the general public.

"As Governor, my top priority is to protect the health of New Yorkers and the health of our economy, and these temporary measures will help us get through the holiday season safely," Governor Hochul said. "I share everyone's frustration that we have gotten to this point, especially with the vaccine at our disposal. I want to thank the millions of New Yorkers who have done the right thing to get fully vaccinated. We are all in this together and if others will follow suit, these measures will no longer be necessary."

Masks are now required to be worn in all indoor public places unless businesses or venues implement a vaccine requirement. As noted on the Frequently Asked Questions webpage, an indoor public place is defined as any indoor space that is not a private residence -- businesses and venues New Yorkers frequent that are publicly owned or owned by private business. These entities include indoor entertainment venues, concert halls, indoor sports stadiums, recreational spaces, restaurants, office buildings, shopping centers, grocery stores, pharmacies, houses of worship

COUNTY

This major action to address the winter surge and concern over upcoming holiday gatherings comes as COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations rise statewide to be in alignment with the CDC's recommendations for communities with substantial and high transmission. The State Health Commissioner issued a

determination solidifying the requirement. This measure is effective until Jan. 15, 2022, after which the State will re-evaluate based on current conditions, and brings added layers of mitigation during the holiday season when more time is spent indoors shopping, gathering and visiting holidaythemed destinations. Acting Health Commissioner Dr. Mary T. Bassett said, "Taking this action now is critical to slowing the COVID-19 winter surge during the holidays. Each of you can contribute: get vaccinated, get boosted if you are already vaccinated and wear a mask. We urge the public to support these new requirements in indoor public places by cooperating with the venues. We need everyone to do their part to get through this together." For information how businesses and venues can implement a proof of vaccination requirement or a mask wearing requirement, see the Frequently Asked Questions at https:// coronav irus.hea lth.ny.gov/

County Clerk Offers Online Certified Document Purchases her office is now offering online purchasing of certain land records through the Suffolk County Clerk’s website. “The most frequent reason residents have for making a trip to the County Clerk’s office is to purchase a certified copy of the deed to their home or proof that a prior mortgage has been satisfied. This new program will eliminate the need to travel to Riverhead,” commented Pascale.

Suffolk County Clerk Judy Pascale

Suffolk County Clerk Judith Pascale is happy to announce that

The online program, accessible at SuffolkCountyNY.gov/clerk, allows homeowners to review the property records recorded on their property and purchase a certified

copy using either MasterCard or Visa. Homeowners will also be able to sign up for the Suffolk County Clerk’s Homeowner Watch List, which once enrolled will alert them via e-mail whenever a new property record is filed against their property. “I’m happy to offer these new services that allow Suffolk County residents to have access to their records twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week. It’s just another way we are bringing government closer to the people,” concluded Pascale.

Moriches Elementary Teacher Leah Olivo Honored by St. Joseph’s College

Leah Olivo, a fourth-grade teacher at Moriches Elementary School, was recently named this year’s recipient of the St. Joseph’s College “Excellence in Teaching” award for primary and early education, an honor reserved for an educator who exemplifies dedication, mission, skill, expertise and talent, as well as someone who inspires and motivates children through a creative and exciting approach in which students can succeed. Mrs. Olivo, who serves as a fourthgrade integrated co-teacher at Moriches Elementary School, graduated from St. Joseph’s College in 2006 with a Bachelor’s degree in Child Study, and later received her Master’s degree from Long Island University (C.W. Post campus). She has been an educator for nearly 15 years – serving her first 10 years as a teacher at the Roosevelt Children’s Academy before joining the Moriches Elementary School community in 2017. “Receiving this award is an unexpected and most appreciated compliment,” said Mrs. Olivo. “To be recognized outside of my school community and family is a wonderful surprise! My hope is that this award shows my students and my own children that when you are passionate about what you do, the rewards are priceless!” This prestigious award is also meant

to honor an educator who is a leader in the profession, someone who pursues professional growth opportunities and is an active and collaborative partner across disciplines.

Leah Olivo Mrs. Olivo’s creativity and innovative approach has proven highly successful. One of her more innovative approaches was when she instituted flexible seating options during her first year as a teacher at Moriches, offering students the opportunity to use a variety of work stations including standing desks, kneeling tables, couches, wobble stools, TheraBand cushions, rocking seats

and other options, as a way to provide students a chance to burn off excess energy and learn in an environment that works best for them. She also works collaboratively with her colleagues in the William Floyd Teacher Center and collaboratively brainstorms ways to provide authentic and meaningful professional development opportunities for and with her peers. She has written a course titled, “Visible Thinking in the 21st Century Classroom,” meant to model critical thinking through routines such as noticing, wondering and thinking out loud. She has also partnered with the local Wertheim National Wildlife Refuge to help develop curriculum and field trips experiences for students. She has worked with the Department of Environmental Conservation and the Pine Barrens Society to bring virtual field trips and learning experiences to students during the pandemic, and is currently working with PSEGLI on a program about creating stories, scripts and videos focused on energy conservation. She also spearheaded the “Wall of Heroes” initiative in which students highlight a special veteran in their life and display student projects in the building. “Mrs. Olivo is an exceptional teacher and leader at Moriches Elementary and in the William Floyd School District,” said Deirdre Redding, principal,

Moriches Elementary School, and the person who nominated Mrs. Olivo for this award. “Her positive attitude and love of children are reflected daily in the outstanding quality of leadership she provides to the students at Moriches Elementary School and her colleagues in the William Floyd School District.”

Mrs. Redding added that Mrs. Olivo is an extraordinary educator whose “integrity, enthusiasm and dedication to her profession” are an asset to the district, and is “nurturing and compassionate in her drive to enhance professional practice and always do what is best for our students.”

Local Shirley Author, Donna Tischner, Inspires Others Through Her Successes and Challenges

By Andrea Peponakis-Matzner

Her first book, Don’t Move. Don’t Talk. Stay Still. A Manhattan Romance, is a young girl’s journey of betrayal, hatred and finding love. Her second book, The Kiss of Life: The Impossible Romance, is a supernatural romance novel. Accidental Romance: A Fall To Love, Donna’s third book, is a spirited love story and her fourth book, Don’t Move. Don’t Talk. Stay Still: A Long Island Romance, expresses that love and marriage have twists and turns that can keep the couple together or break them apart.

A few weeks ago, a long-time friend of mine, Fran Deshler, reached out to me to write a human- interest story about a local author who has battled serious health issues. As a humanitarian myself, I am always open to meeting people who can inspire others, so I agreed. Unaware of the exact health issues, I wasn’t sure what to expect at our meeting. I was pleasantly greeted by an upbeat, happy, intelligent, motivated woman named Donna Tischner. Donna Tischner, originally from Queens, has been a resident of Shirley since 1994. Her beautiful home is filled with photos of her “husband of a lifetime”, Tommy, and her now adult children, Joey, Ricky and Vanessa. Her home is decorated with original paintings, has a beautiful piano and books everywhere. I am now very intrigued to find out more about this woman. As we sit and begin the interview, Donna lets me know that she is a twin to a sister named Diane and that in 2012, her twin sister passed away from breast cancer. As we can understand, the

bond between twins is even stronger than the bond between siblings and Donna was devastated when her sister passed away. She had an extremely difficult time accepting it. However, because her sister passed from breast cancer, Donna’s awareness to do selfexams and annual mammograms heightened. In 2013, five months after the death of her twin, Donna, through a self-exam, felt a lump in her breast. Upon further medical examinations, Donna was diagnosed with stage four breast cancer. With the support of her loving family and her strong will, Donna took

the necessary doctor’s orders to find ways to battle this beast. After 8 long years of chemotherapy, radiation and the toll of the side effects, Ms. Donna Tischner is cancer free!! From stage four to cancer free! What a miracle.

an author. “My passions for painting, playing the piano and writing kept my mind off of what I was going through. My body was weak but not my spirit. I used my artistic creativity to help me feel better”, says Donna.

I asked Donna, “Aside from your family, what kept you going these past 8 years?”. I then come to find out that those paintings hanging in her home are her originals. She is an artist. Then I come to find out that the piano in her home is the one she plays. She is a talented pianist. I then come to find out that the books in her home are her original works as well. She is

And as I look at her, I know this woman is an inspiration to all. She has a very positive attitude. Her creativity is boundless. She is, most definitely, a role model for us all.

Bench Dedication for Mark Brown Fellow teachers, family and friends paid tribute to the memory of Brookhaven Elementary School

teaching assistant Mark Brown during a bench dedication in his honor on Dec. 4.

The bench, which sits on the large playground at Brookhaven Elementary School in the South Country Central School District, was donated by the Brookhaven High School Class of 1998. The class members wanted a way to honor the memory of the teaching assistant who touched their lives. Brown spent 15 years as a teaching assistant in the South Country School District, where he also attended as a student. “Mark had an incredible ability to help others and make them feel special,” said Principal Rebecca Raymond during the ceremony. “He not only supported students in his classes, but those throughout the school. Many times Mark would visit a student in another class to give them a pep talk to help them have a better day.”

Photo Credit: South Country Central School District

A bench in memory of Brookhaven Elementary School teaching assistant Mark Brown was dedicated during a ceremony on Dec. 4.

Also during the dedication, Raymond read the poem, “When Great Trees Fall” by Maya Angelou, saying, “In reflecting on all the lessons Mark taught us in his short time on this earth, I was inspired by this poem.”

In support of what Donna has been through, I went online and purchased all four of her very interesting romance novels.

Donna Tischner’s books are available on Amazon in paperback or Kindle format. Just put Donna Tischner in the Amazon search bar. What a great stocking stuffer or gift of any kind for yourself or someone else this would be! Donna still experiences pain from the procedures she underwent. The small profits she receives from the sale of these books helps her pay for CBD oils to relieve her pain. It was a pleasure for me to meet and write about such an inspirational woman. Donna, you are wished continued healing and success with your novels.

SUFFOLK CLOSEUP BY KARL GROSSMAN And finally, only last week, came the news that the governing body of Suffolk County—the Suffolk County Legislature—will have a Republican majority as of the new year but not a GOP supermajority. Still, it will be the first time since 2005 that the GOP will hold a majority of seats on the 18-member legislature. This is a big part of the GOP sweep (with some exceptions) in Suffolk on Election Day—way back on November 2. Hanging for weeks in the balance between the GOP having a majority on the legislature or a supermajority of twothirds—capable of overriding vetoes by Democratic County Executive Steve Bellone—was the fate of incumbent Legislator Sarah Anker, a Democrat from Mount Sinai. On election night, she was behind Republican Brian Sweeney of Shoreham by 1,188 votes but caught up in absentee ballots. She came out ahead last week by just 63 votes and described her victory as “close to a miracle.” Ms. Anker has been a leading environmental advocate on the Suffolk Legislature. Elected initially in 2011, she has a background in environmental action. As her official biography relates, after her “grandmother lost her battle

of its pension and health fund. Mr. McCaffrey began his involvement in government in 1990 when he was elected to the village board in Lindenhurst. He was also deputy mayor of Lindenhurst, located in Babylon Town and the largest village in Suffolk. After more than 20 years as an official in Lindenhurst, he was first elected to the Suffolk Legislature in 2013.

Democrats as of January will hold seven seats on the legislature. There will be 10 Republicans and one Conservative, Nick Caracappa of Selden, who also ran on the Republican line and caucuses with the GOP legislators. The new presiding officer of the legislature is expected to be Kevin McCaffrey of Lindenhurst who currently is the panel’s Republican minority leader. The PO sets the agenda of the legislature and appoints much of its staff. The Suffolk County Legislature since its creation in 1970 has been big on non-partisanship. Notably during the decades-long battle against the Long Island Lighting Company’s push for the Shoreham nuclear power plant, nearly all its members stood together regardless of party affiliation. Interestingly, Mr. McCaffrey comes from a labor union background—as did

the longest-serving PO of the panel, Democrat William Lindsay of Holbrook. Mr. Lindsay was PO from 2006 until 2013 when he passed away while in office. An electrician, in 1992 he became business manager of Local 25 of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers. He died after a long bout with mesothelioma, a lung cancer resulting, he believed, from exposure to asbestos from visiting construction sites. “You try to protect your members from this disease, and then you end up getting the damn disease,” he said. He was highly respected. Indeed, the Suffolk County government center in

“Time to join forces in Suffolk” was the Newsday headline of a full-page editorial it ran following this year’s election. It opened by stating that “election returns rocked Long Island and the nation as Republicans notched extraordinary gains.” It noted the GOP “secured a comfortable margin” on the Suffolk Legislature, and “the immediate political conversation centered on a potential feud” between Mr. Bellone and the new legislative GOP majority. How Mr. Bellone will deal with a Suffolk Legislature with a GOP majority remains to be seen. It’s been accurately reported in Newsday that Mr. Bellone “frequently butted heads” with DuWayne Gregory who succeeded Mr. Lindsay as PO of the legislature. And this was even though Mr. Gregory, like Mr. Bellone, is a Babylon Town Democrat.

THE BETTOR ANGLE

Bowl Season is Here!

TM

BY TOM BARTON The College Football Playoff committee has made their decision and no one should be happy, or, shocked. We all saw this decision coming, and most groaned when it was announced because it still bothers true college football fans. The Alabama Crimson Tide are your new #1 team in the country after beating Georgia. They will take on #4 seed Cincinnati and Georgia will take on #2 seed Michigan. Make no mistake, I am not telling you that I believe Michigan would beat Alabama, or for that matter Georgia, but they deserve the top spot. The line makers have made it abundantly clear what they think of the SEC marking Alabama as a nearly two touchdown favorite over the Bearcats, despite Cincy's unbeaten record. While the Bulldogs from Georgia, who sat #1

overall for much of the season, are installed as more than a touchdown favorite over Michigan. But, what is lost in all of this conversation is the word "deserve". Michigan deserves to be the #1 team in the nation. That should be almost an inarguable point. If not for the all powerful, and ESPN connected SEC, any sane college football fan would look at the resumes and agree with that. The Wolverines came into their conference championship game as the #2 team in the land, after they beat a previous top 3 team in Ohio State. Michigan looked like they were the best team by soundly destroying Iowa for the Big 10 title game. Michigan's resume has one blemish and that was a very tough loss, against an in-state rival that had many officiating questions, and still lost by

THE ROTOMILL BY CHUCK T.

We are at that point in the season with 14 of the planned 18 NFL weeks in the books and it’s time to begin thinking of who the season long leaders are going to be statistically. And of course the differences in the formats form a large dividing point when assessing players, with none being larger than the Points per Reception vs. NonPPR formats out there. It’s also the time of the year where we look back at our draft cheat sheets and study what worked and what didn’t work in our pre-season hunches. What stands out is that the running backs who make a lot of catches out of the backfield were a disappointment this season. Don’t get me wrong, a few excelled, and some new blood is emerging as leaders in this regard. But as a collective group, it’s been a disappointment. Christian McCaffrey has had an injury riddled season missing several weeks of the year. A pure beast because of his volume, his 2019 and 2020 seasons rank as the 6th and 3rd best ever seasons in PPR formats in NFL history. I would say

Fantasy Sports

just 4 points. Alabama meanwhile, also won their conference championship game. Not in as impressive fashion, but still a sound beating of Georgia. Alabama though has a few blemishes on their record. They lost to an unranked Texas A&M team earlier in the year, struggled against LSU and Florida, who both fired their coaches. The biggest problem for them though should have been in the final game of the season when they needed multiple overtimes to beat an unranked Auburn team, who won't finish the year over .500 and who's quarterback was literally playing on one leg. So, while the committee is happy and even reports came out that this was a year for little controversy, the reality is once again, the SEC money overrides the deserve factor. Year after year more

deserving teams get passed up on by the mighty SEC machine and it ruins college football for many of us. With that said I won't be betting against

Not Really the Year of the Pass Catching RB as a 1st round draft pick.

nothing changes about his outlook going forward but his 2021 season just won’t go down as one of his best. With 4 straight missed weeks, Alvin Kamara will not look to 2021 as one of his finest campaigns due to his knee sprain suffered several weeks ago. He did return to the field in Week 14 and needs to have some big weeks down the stretch to salvage his season. But considering many fantasy owners picked him 3rd overall in pre-season drafts he has been a disappointment. Austin Ekeler has now had consecutive injury riddled seasons. I had drafted him in 2020 as well and repeated the mistake here in 2021.When I selected him in the 2nd round of my draft, I thought at #17 overall I was getting a heck of a value. It hasn’t turned out that way as he is the #16 ranked rusher on the season in Week #14. While Najee Harris was widely expected to be the best rookie running back in 2021, he has been somewhat of a revelation as a pass receiver. His 50 receptions through Week #13 is the most amongst all running backs. That is 2

Alabama or Georgia to lift that title, but going into the playoffs they don't deserve their slots.

more than Leonard Fournette and 4 more than Austin Ekeler. Second year running back Antonio Gibson is emerging though as a guy who will climb draft boards for 2022 as he is emerging as the next dominant pass-catching running back. Through the first 8 weeks of the season , Gibson averaged 16 touches per game. However, he has

averaged 27.3 touches per game since Week 9. That is huge, and is in Christan McCaffrey territory. His 31 receptions on the season through Week 13 doesn’t yet approach the league leaders but the usage and targets continue to climb. The #7 ranked running back in terms of rushing yardage, this is a player who will make his way on to some owners’ draft boards to be targeted

Week #14’s Thursday night game between the Steelers and Vikings saw a hurt Dalvin Cook destroy the Steelers defense with 205 rushing yards on 27 carries. This officially marks the 2021 season as a disappointment for the Steelers team defense. The Steelers used to be one of the most reliable defenses to select in fantasy football, in plenty of seasons they ranked as a Top 5 selection. After their defeat to the Vikings the team has allowed the 24th highest amount of points on the season. In average yards allowed per game, the Steelers rank 26th in the NFL. Many pre-season guides had them ranked as a Top 10 unit. The 458 yards allowed to the Vikings in Week 14 sufficiently blew up their numbers and chances of being considered a top unit for 2021. The Steelers have a lot of needs to address in the 2022 draft and certainly a replacement for Ben Roethlisberger has to be on their lists. This will be a team defense I avoid for next season.

VETERANS WAY BY REV. FREDERICK MILLER. PH.D. While most Veterans are aware of the VA hospital, Federal Veterans Affairs, and the county’s Veteran Affairs operations, they are not aware of the States involvement in helping Veterans. You probably know about the State’s Veteran Home in Stony Brook, but what else does the state do to help veterans? The New York State Senator’s committee is there to help veterans within the state. We, on Long Island, especially in Suffolk County are particularly in great shape for getting that help. Senator Alexis Weik represents the third District in the Senate and serves actively on the Veterans Homeland and Military Affairs Committee.

Since taking office in January, she has held and attended meetings with veterans here in Suffolk County. In her recent news letter she reported the list of new laws regarding veterans that were passed this year. Legislation S.7124A/A.7388B changes the beginning of the Vietnam War from February 28, 1961 to November 1, 1955. This change acts to acknowledge the American military presence in the Republic of Vietnam prior to the previous date recognized by the federal and state government. Legislation S.3638/A.7472 establishes a task force on veteran employment

opportunities. This group will be charged with holding annual public hearings and making recommendations to the legislature, regarding ways that the state can assist veterans in finding and maintaining

meaningful employment opportunities. This task force will be comprised of stakeholders within state government, the private sector and institutions of higher education.

Legislation S.2977A/ A.6100A requires that all intake forms for admission or residency to any nursing home, assisted living facility or homeless shelter ask individuals whether they or their spouses ever served in the military. Identifying individuals who are veterans or spouses of veterans enables the state to help these individuals receive the benefits that they have earned and are entitled to receive. Legislation S.3623/A.7514 ensures that individuals who voluntarily leave their jobs to accompany spouses who are subjects of military transfers will be eligible for unemployment benefits.

Help is available to you by calling the local VA hospital in Northport, (631) 261-4400 or Veterans Crisis Line 1-800-273-8255, press 1 to talk to a veteran or have a confidential chat at VeteransCrisisLine.net or text to 838255. If you have any question relating to veteran problems please do not hesitate to contact us and we will do our best to answer it. Contact us at Drfred72@Gmail.com

Trustee Compensation

ASK NANCY BY NANCY BURNER, ESQ.

Q: How much does a trustee get paid? A:

Being a Trustee of a trust carries serious responsibi lities and trustees are compensated for their time. Section 2309 of the New York Surrogate’s Court Procedure Act (“SCPA”) sets forth the computation of commissions payable to trustees. Trustees can receive commissions on the amount of property that a trustee pays out and annual statutory commissions.

Pursuant to Section 2309(1) of the SCPA, a trustee may receive 1% of the property that the Trustee pays out. In addition, a trustee can get annual commissions at the following rates, as set forth in Section 2309(2) of the SCPA: (a) $10.50 per $1,000 or major

fraction thereof on the first $400,000 of principal.

full commission if the trust principal is $100,000 or less or more than $400,000.

(b) $4.50 per $1,000 or major fraction thereof on the next $600,000 of principal.

Trust documents can contain specific language on how a trustee will be paid. Accordingly, a trustee should review the trust document before making a distribution.

(c) $3.00 per $1,000 or major fraction thereof on all additional principal. Annual commissions are calculated either at the end of the year or at the beginning of the year. Whichever option the trustee chooses, it must be consistent throughout the continuance of the trust. Trustees take annual commissions only once in a 12 month period. Any distributions made to beneficiaries reduces the commission. Additions to the trust increase the statutory commission.

Pursuant to SCPA §2309(3), annual commissions must come one-third from the income of the trust and two-thirds from the principal of the trust. If a trust

has multiple trustees, the SCPA sets forth how commissions are apportioned depending on the amount of trust principal. For example, two co-trustees receive

Trustee commissions are often complex and difficult to calculate. There are many possible “caveats” to the calculation, depending on the trust document and circumstance. Accordingly, you should consult with an experienced estate planning attorney before undertaking such an endeavor. - Michal Lipshitz, Esq. and Nancy Burner, Esq.

ON THE SEA BY VINCENT PICA, COMMODORE

First District, Southern Region (D1SR) United States Coast Guard Auxiliary

There’s an old chestnut that the two happiest days of a boater’s life is buying a boat and selling a boat. What can you do about keeping those two days as far apart as possible? This column is about that.

For Starters

First, never compromise safety for dollars. The sea, as I keep reminding you, is a hostile environment. It makes no sense to scrimp on safety gear or on the boat’s inherent sea-keeping abilities. With that said, there is no sense being on a boat if you aren’t having fun. So, before we start, safety and fun are the two unalterable goals of the exercise. If you are contemplating buying a boat this year, be sure you buy just enough boat – and no more. There are some real bargains out there in marinas, boat showrooms and the internet – and many of them are there because the skipper bought more boat than he needed and, subsequently, could afford. If the bays and creeks are your goals, you don’t need a 40’ boat, no matter how cheap it is priced. Big boats are just inherently more expensive

The South Shore Press • December 15, 2021

Cheap(er) Boating! your consideration.

to maintain. From bottom paint, to dockage charges, to just having more “stuff” aboard, it all adds up. And the fuel costs are not 2x for a 40’ boat versus a 20’ boat, they are likely to 4x (my guesstimate.) It just takes a lot more energy to move a larger boat through the water.

Be a student of the game. Go to seminars at boat shows. Read boating magazines and invest in marine howto books. The right tools are better than money in the bank. They may be expensive, but if you use them well, they can save you a fortune.

Cheaper vs Longer?

On balance, longer wins. Cheapgrade vinyl "windows" for cockpit and flybridge enclosures will soon discolor and crack. I’ve used higher grade Strataglass, in the past and it lasted much longer, saving lots of money in the long run. I’m wary of “discount” motor oils. While you may still change the oil each season, which makes the brand oil seem more expensive, I wonder what is going on with the engine that the oil is protecting.

DIY – Do It Yourself

The more maintenance and repair work you can do well yourself, the more you'll save. But know your limits. Certain things should be left to trained professionals. Tackling these projects is asking for trouble and big expenditures. Examples might include

Page 19

Avoid wearing out things unnecessarily fast. Use good chafing gear to avoid abrasion, which can ruin a line in one blow. Good chafing gear (old garden hose wears like iron) is very inexpensive and can save big bucks. The boat itself will wear out faster if you drive it hard and fast. And you’ll save a LOT of money if you throttle her back. working on electronics, refrigeration and repairs inside the engine – that that cheap oil may have precipitated. Short cuts often lead to “long cuts”, if you get my drift. Things that many can do or can learn to do include engine repair (remember, these are car engines modified for a maritime environment – and didn’t you tinker with the car

engine when you were younger?) Many maintenance items can be managed by the weekend mechanic - such as changing an impeller, a raw water pump, a thermostat and alternator. Starter problems may need no more than a cleaning of battery terminals. Changing a solenoid, replacing bilge pumps, inspecting connections and perhaps adjustments, and repair of deck and plumbing leaks are not outside

And don’t forget your insurance. Do you have what you need and no more? All food for thought. BTW, if you are interested in being part of USCG Forces, email me at joinuscgaux@aol.com or go directly to the D1SR Human Resources Department, which is in charge of new members matters, at DSO-HR and we will help you “get in this thing..."

Borderline Personality Disorder Part II

ASK MICHELLE “Your Family Therapist”

BY MICHELLE CAVALERI, LCSW-R

Wedding Officiant & NYS Divorce Mediator

There is no single cause for BPD. Instead, there are several risk factors that, when present, increase the chances that a person develops BPD. The risk factors fall into two categories: biological and environmental.

BIOLOGICAL FACTORS

Malfunctions in neurotransmitter levels can lead to problems such as impaired reasoning, impulsivity, and unstable emotions. The brain too, can be impaired. Brain scans show that in people with BPD, have a much more active amygdala, the part of the brain that controls the intensity of our emotions and our ability to normalize after sharp emotions have been aroused. Research supports that BPD is the result of instability in specific neural pathways in the brain, and problematic behaviors are not intentional or willful.

ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS

It’s a myth that BPD is a result of

some form of childhood abuse. Often the claims of abuse are self-reported and there is no standardized definition of abuse.

aggression, and impulsivity.

Environmental factors – abuse, neglect, childhood trauma of many different kinds – appear to trigger BPD in someone who may be genetically predisposed to the condition.

PSYCHOTHERAPY

Common medication protocols are antipsychotics, antidepressants, and mood stabilizers. There are several structured programs just for people with BPD who are motivated to work on their issues. All of the following treatments focus on problematic borderline behaviors.

Often referred to as “environmental burdens,” in addition to abuse, the following may have existed in the early life of someone diagnosed with BPD:

• Dialectic Behavior Therapy (DBT) – teaches the clients to accept themselves as they are, enabling them to make changes in their behavior. They learn how to tolerate distress, regulate their emotions, become mindful and improve their interpersonal skills.

• Ineffective parenting – anything from inadequate parental skills to mental illness or substance abuse. • An unsafe and chaotic home situation. • A clash between the disposition of child and parent. • The sudden loss of a caregiver or the caregiver’s attention – even something as common as the birth of a new baby – which the child perceives as

abandonment.

TREATMENT

There really is success in the treatment of BPD. However, it must be the person with the disorder who is

committed to doing the work to bring about changes.

MEDICATION

Help reduce BPD symptoms such as depression, mood swings, dissociation,

• Schema Therapy - schemas are self-defeating life patterns which can occur when vital needs are not met in childhood. The goal is to help the patient turn off these schemas and get their emotional needs met in relationships.

requires that we send you this notice about the foreclosure process. Please read it carefully. Summons and Complaint You are in danger of losing your home. If you fail to respond to the summons and complaint in this foreclosure action, you may lose your home. Please read the summons and complaint carefully. You should immediately contact an attorney or your local legal aid office to obtain advice on how to protect yourself. Sources of Information and Assistance The State encourages you to become informed about your options in foreclosure. In addition to seeking assistance from an attorney or legal aid office, there are government agencies and nonprofit organizations that you may contact for information about possible options, including trying to work with your lender during this process. To locate an entity near you, you may call the toll-free helpline maintained by the New York State Department of Financial Services at (800) 342-3736 or visit the Department’s website at http://www.dfs.ny.gov. Rights and Obligations YOU ARE NOT REQUIRED TO LEAVE YOUR HOME AT THIS TIME. You have the right to stay in your home during the foreclosure process. You are not required to leave your home unless and until your property is sold at auction pursuant to a judgment of foreclosure and sale. Regardless of whether you choose to remain in your home, YOU ARE REQUIRED TO TAKE CARE OF YOUR PROPERTY and pay property taxes in

accordance with state and local law. Foreclosure Rescue Scams Be careful of people who approach you with offers to “save” your home. There are individuals who watch for notices of foreclosure actions in order to unfairly profit from a homeowner’s distress. You should be extremely careful about any such promises and any suggestions that you pay them a fee or sign over your deed. State law requires anyone offering such services for profit to enter into a contract which fully describes the services they will perform and fees they will charge, and which prohibits them from taking any money from you until they have completed all such promised services.

Annual Holiday

Dear Community,

FOOD DRIVE

2021 has been a challenging year. However, we refuse to let the hardships of 2021 define us. This will be our 11th year holding our “Food for Service” food drive. Shirley Auto Body is committed to our community. We live here; we work here. Our food drive remains the same: donate $20 of non-perishable, non-expired food to receive a free oil change. We are asking that if you are in a position to help, that you please be more generous this year. Together, as a community, we can lift each other up! As Mother Theresa said, “Not all of us can do great things, but we can do small things with great love.”
