Golf Artist Elaine Thompson Exhibits in East Northport

Artist Elaine Faith Thompson is with her husband’s late cousin Kevin Dobson. Kevin was a Vietnam veteran, devoted to helping veterans in California and Elaine gave him with one of her posters, when he visited her gallery in Bohemia.

Bohemia Artist Elaine Faith Thompson, will be exhibiting her art in the East Northport Library, located at 185 Larkfield Road, East Northport, 11731 for the month of November.

Library Hours: Mon. - Fri. 9 am - 9 pm, Sat. 9 am - 5 pm, Sun. 1 pm - 5 pm.

In 1967 she was an illustrator living in East Northport only blocks away from the library. Thompson was a free-lance artist illustrating liquor bottle labels.

At the time she was without a car and had two infants that she would push in an large old-fashioned baby carriage to and from the supermarket on Larkfield

Sagamore Hill; local scenes; Davis Park Fire Island, Riverhead Raceway, the Peconic River, Aqueduct and Roosevelt Raceways, Smithtown Bull, Downtown Sayville and Schoolhouse, Mount Sinai Garden, Lady Golfer at Timber Point, and Sunflowers. Her portraits include “Pope Francis in America,” Derek Jeter, John Heisman, Bobby Jones, and Elvis. Other paintings are autos, pets and golf art including Shinnecock, Sebonack, Winged Foot and Bethpage.

Her paintings are photo-realism and impressionism in a vanGogh style, in color and black and white. She also paints commissions on request.

Thompson has worked on many golf paintings for USGA championships

on Long Island and the New York Metropolitan area. In 2019 was the first time she was commissioned to do a painting for the PGA of America and it was at Bethpage.

The most famous commission that Thompson received was from President Ronald Reagan, for the official poster design of the National Vietnam Veterans Memorial Statue in Washington, D.C. In honor of Veterans Day, she will have a few of the posters available.

Nick Caracappa, Out and About in the Fourth Legislative District

Tuesday, November 23, 2021 was a pretty busy day in the district for Suffolk County Legislator Nick Caracappa. Due to the overwhelming response to his holiday food drive, he delivered many of the proceeds to Pastor Hank Kistler at Connect Church, located at 31 Horseblock Road in Centereach. Connect Church will pass the food along to needy families, so they might enjoy the bounty of a Thanksgiving Day feast.

Legislator Caracappa also visited an historic Revolutionary site in Coram, referred to as the “Burning of the Hay.” On November 23, 1780, Major Benjamin Tallmadge and

approximately 80 of his revolutionary patriots burnt 300 tons of hay in Coram to deny the British that essential winter staple. Caracappa went to the location to pay tribute to this daring act of bravery.

“I love how our community played a significant role in the United States’ success in the Revolutionary War,” stated Legislator Caracappa. More importantly, I am so proud that our modern day community looks out for those in need, and really showed an outpouring of generosity with the many food donations my office received. I am truly fortunate to live in and serve the people of the Fourth Legislative District.”

Razor Thin Margin Prompts Vote Recount in Suffolk's 6th Legislative District

In the wake of a nail biting election for Suffolk County's 6th Legislative District between Democrat incumbent Sarah Anker and Republican challenger Brendan Sweeney on November 2, all 18,000 plus ballots are undergoing a manual recount at Suffolk County's Board of Elections. A judge will determine the validity of 74 of the absentee ballots.

Suffolk County GOP Chairman, Jesse Garcia, explained: "A new provision of the election law says any race within .05 percent, or 20 votes, goes through a manual recount, and," Garcia added, "if any other objections come out, that they be included in this recount."

Reached for comment this week, Incumbent Legislator Sarah Anker said she remains "cautiously optimistic" about the final outcome after the recount is finalized. "I was disappointed on election night because 1,188 votes is a lot," Anker said referencing the difference in

the number of votes between her and Sweeney. "I was told I would need to win 87% of the absentee ballots, and that it would take a miracle for me to win. But," Anker continued, "a week later I got a call saying my horse is still in the race."

Turns out the 74 yet to be counted absentee ballots are Democratic, many of which come from senior citizen election districts. "So the Republicans pulled 74 absentee ballots that are sitting waiting for a judge to decide," the Legislator said.

With Sweeney up by 12 votes at press time, Garcia told South Shore Press, "Democrats over performed in the absentee ballot phase, plus there's the power of incumbency.

However," Garcia cautioned, "We see a path to a possible victory, and this process preserves the rights of the people to have every vote counted." Garcia continued, "We made 70 objections to absentee ballots for a variety of reasons that may include signatures, marks on the ballots, or respond envelope not properly time stamped in

accordance with election law."

Those objections will rest in the hands of a judge.

Forecasting results, Garcia said, "We feel cautiously optimistic, but it is prudent to go through the manual recount to avoid any future objections."

Suffolk County Democratic Committe spokesperson, Keith Davies, asserts confidence that Anker will cross the finish line ahead of her challenger after the final manual recount. "Sarah got (won) 85 percent of the absentee ballots that were already counted.

Plus," Davies continued, "the Republicans are making frivolous challenges on the ballots."

Davies maintains the judge will rule as such,, and the vote will overwhelmingly be in Anker's favor.

Anker, meanwhile, attributes much of election 2021's surprise red wave results to the political climate in Albany and Washington, DC. "Governor Cuomo certainly had his issues, then there's bail reform

which I oppose, and immigration at the federal level," all of which Anker says had a ripple effect on local elections.

No stranger to photo finish elections, Anker, who in 2015 crossed the finish line just one vote ahead of her opponent, said, "I want the waiting to be done with, hopefully for a final outcome where I will continue to serve the people of the 6th Legislative District. I take my work very seriously," she said, "and there are projects like Rails to Trails that I would like to see through to completion. " Anker said she's been fortunate to have been re-elected six times in what is a predominately Republican registered district. "I mutually engage with my constituents in our community, and I am grateful and appreciative to be here the last 10 years."

Reached for an interview, Sweeney said he would not comment until after the recount, and deferred all comments to Republican headquarters.

Parents Should Be Encouraged to Get MORE Involved in Their Child’s Education, Not Less

Education officials are pushing the adoption of a racist, hateful curriculum, which only serves to indoctrinate our children, sow racial resentment, promote radical ideas that aim to redefine gender and teach nonage appropriate sex education lessons to young students, and pit students against one another. Parents across the United States have good reason to be outraged about the quality of education their children are receiving, and the notion that parents should be discouraged from pushing back is ludicrous.

The NSBA’s letter likened parents' participation in school board meetings to domestic terrorism. Thanks to a Freedom of Information Act request

by Parents Defending Education, emails were obtained revealing that the NSBA coordinated with White House officials when developing the letter. The NSBA has since apologized for the language it used in the letter, but the fact that language was used after consultation with the White House provides frightening insights into the Biden Administration’s disregard for America’s parents wanting to improve the quality of their kids’ education.

The U.S. Department of Justice recently announced it was launching an investigation to "address the rise in criminal conduct directed toward school personnel" by parents increasingly and rightfully worried about their kids' education. We learned from Attorney General Merrick Garland's recent testimony before the House Judiciary Committee that the basis for this investigation was a letter from the National School

Let me be clear, concerned parents absolutely have the right to hold their elected officials and school board members accountable and make their voices heard in a nonviolent manner.

Parents know their children better than anyone, are their biggest and most persistent advocates, and have their best interests at heart. Certain politicians, at the local, state and federal levels, are peddling the idea that concerns over curriculum is just a

dangerous ideologies being taught in the classroom. One of the best ways to improve education in schools is for parents to be more actively involved, not less.

rightwing conspiracy theory and that parents having a say in the curriculum their children are taught is a threat to our schools and quality of education.

That notion is patently absurd.

In one particularly alarming instance, first grade students at a New York school were being taught sex education lessons without the knowledge of the children’s parents.

When parents caught wind of what was being taught, school administrators

wrongly assured them they had simply misinterpreted the lessons. This dismissal of parents is unacceptable and is an alarming sign of how some educators view their role versus the role of their students’ parents.

The real threats here are the erosion of the curriculum, the weaponization of the justice system and attempts to turn students against other students, not the parents who are courageously speaking out and pushing back on

Former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice recently said, “We teach the good and we teach the bad of history. But what we don’t do is make 7- and 10-year-olds feel that they are somehow bad people because of the color of their skin. We’ve been through that and we don’t need to do that again.” I couldn't agree more.

When children go to school, they need to be learning essential skills and information that will help them become productive members of society and shape their successful futures.

Pitting students against one another based on their races and genders will not help them achieve any of these goals and will cause severe damage to the learning environments in classrooms across the country. I am proud to stand with our nation’s parents in the effort to improve classrooms everywhere.

On the Fire Island to Montauk Point Project

BY KARL GROSSMAN With the Fire Island to Montauk Point project of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to be restarted in 2023 and it being what Kevin McAllister, president of the organization Defend H20 and a Center Moriches native, describes as now largely a “sand plan”—to dump sand along the 83 miles of the Suffolk County oceanfront—it would be instructive to consider the situation in another region.

The restarted FIMP plan also offers “sand bypassing” at Fire Island, Moriches and Shinnecock inlets to maintain what the Army now recognizes and terms the “littoral transport of sediment” of sand, sand otherwise sucked into those inlets.

It also provides for the “elevation,” as the Army calls it, of 3,675 structures, “floodproofing” of 650 and acquisition of 14.”

I began writing about the Army’s FIMP plan when I started as a reporter in Suffolk in 1962. Then what was a new scheme also involved sand-dumping. But a key feature involved the construction of up to 50 “groins”—piles of rocks placed out into the ocean.

But mainly, it’s as Mr. McAllister calls it, a “sand plan”—to dump sand along the oceanfront. The Army and other proponents of coastal engineering call this “renourishment” or “replenishment,” words suggesting a parallel to how living organisms gets nourished or replenished.

To say dump suggests a temporary picture of sand being dumped and then being washed away by storms, sometimes the next big storm.

But this turned out to be disastrous.

Between 1965 and 1970, 15 groins were placed along the Westhampton Beach shoreline. What the Army did not recognize was how the jetty-like structures would disrupt the “littoral drift” of sand moving east to west in the ocean and leave the coast to the west sand-starved. Beach houses were lost.

There was a lawsuit and a $80 million settlement. Indeed, part of what’s to be a restarted FIMP scheme involves removal of two groins built in the sea off Ocean Beach on Fire Island to, acknowledges the Army, “allow sand to follow” the littoral drift.

The price of the restarted FIMP project, according to a press release from Congressmen Lee Zeldin and Andrew Garbarino of Suffolk: “From start to finish, will total more than $3 billion.”

The “initial” cost, “more than $1.5 billion,” would be paid by federal funding. But then regular subsequent sand dumping would be paid through a split between the U.S. and a “local” obligation paid by towns where the further dumping happens, New York State and Suffolk

Asbury Park Fishing Club was quoted as saying. “Any recovery made by mother nature is only destroyed by more sand.”

The article reported: “Rather than using beach replenishment to protect the shoreline, coalition members say policymakers and coastal engineers should cultivate so-called ‘living shorelines’ comprised of natural materials and native vegetation.”

County. So all taxpayers will pay for the sand dumping.

In New Jersey earlier this year, “A coalition of environmentalists, waterfront access advocates and surf fishermen gathered on the Jersey Shore… to denounce beach replenishment as an exercise in futility that destroys natural ecosystems and subsidizes wealthy beachfront homeowners at taxpayers’ expense,” as NJ Advance Media began an article in October.

It quoted Taylor McFarland, acting director of Sierra Club’s New Jersey chapter, saying; “We have continued to watch failed beach replenishment projects pump millions of dollars of sand on our beaches that just wash away in the next storm.”

New Jersey already draws from a Realty Transfer Tax “devoted to the state Shore Protection Fund… The fund finances the state portion of replenishment projects which replace sand washed away gradually or by storms,” noted NJ Advance Media.

The New Jersey coalition declared its opposition to increasing the amount of money raised by the Realty Transfer Tax for the Shore Protection Fund. “The coalition cited findings by the Program for Studies of Developed Shorelines at Western Carolina University that beach replenishment projects in New Jersey had cost taxpayers $1,542,879,751 during the years 1989 to 2018,” said the article.

“Beach replenishment has killed off our coastal ecosystem,” Jim Bourne of the

They lost a game 7 to the eventual champs, but despite the loss the future looked bright. Some losses feel like opening, and the Islanders 2020 season felt like an opening into a new generation for Isles fans. The 2021 season brought plenty of hope and excitement. A new arena would be opening up and New York sat at 20 to 1 odds, good for top 8 in the NHL. Most pundits and hockey people knew how dangerous this team could be, and almost all saw a successful season coming. Something has gone terribly wrong.

The Islanders opened up the week in dead last place in the Metro and can't seem to win at home. The glass

half full crowd will point to their road schedule, Covid problems, injuries and an improved division as all part of the problem. Sure, we can agree they all had a hand in the Islanders downfall early in the year, but last place? There is no way to sugar coat the scoring problems. The offense is non-existent at times with their league low shooting percentage and averaging about 2 goals a game. No matter what the schedule or division is, that won't get it done.

Barry Trotz can do a lot of things, but this roster has massive flaws that are being exposed. In a league where scoring has increased and the need for that star player has never seemed greater the Islanders are missing both a true scoring option, and consistency

If you blink, you can sometimes miss it.

One thing that doesn’t race by though is how the Super Bowl competitors go out and announce their intentions of getting across the finish line. Baseball owners are set up to lock the player’s out on midnight of December 1st and appear to be moving in that direction.

And oh yeah, that guy Belichick up in New England took just one season to find his replacement for Tom Brady.

We are going to be at New Year’s Eve before you know it.

The New England Patriots have surrendered the fewest points in the NFL this season. The Patriots have surrendered 313.2 yards per game to opponents. Only Carolina and the Buffalo Bills have been stingier.

Belichick has a star quarterback in his rookie season that fell in his lap with the 15th pick in the latest NFL draft.

As each pick continued in this latest NFL draft the drama got heightened as the analysts realized that the Patriots were looking at getting the best QB in the draft and doing it at the 15th pick.

And at $6,800 on Fan Duel last Sunday, Mac is where my money went. It just makes no sense to me to pay $1,200

This team is double digits out of a playoff spot, they already have as many losses as the top 3 teams in this division does combined, and there is no guarantee that the teams health will all of a sudden come back and hit the ground running. The new arena should add a spark and more home games should add to the win count but we are already more than a quarter into the season and some things are obvious. The Islanders aren't winning the division and will have to fight for a playoff spot. Unless they get some sort of offense going this will be a lost season and crush

any hope and momentum there was leading into the year. Trotz has pulled off miracles in his career, let's hope he

can do it once again because things seem bleak.

The Race to New Year’s Eve is On are cleaning house of questionable parts. The release of Clint Frazier and Rougned Odor shows that the Yankees are being tight fisted at the moment.

And so it was a little surprising to learn that the Yankees had extended a 1-year, $25 million contract offer to Justin Verlander coming off of Tommy John surgery. Verlander turned the Yankees down and re-signed with Houston for the same terms, but I don’t see any way that the Yankees could not be in heavily in pursuit of Atlanta Brave Freddie Freeman. He would become the poster boy for the Yankee franchise and it makes much more sense for them to sign a left handed slugging 1st baseman than one of the free agent shortstops.

Especially with SS prospect Anthony Volpe at most a minor league season away from the major leagues.

The 8-3 Titans came into their Week 12 matchup as an underdog to the 7-4 Patriots but the momentum which is starting to build behind Bill Belichick is starting to become a reality. A win here over this Tennessee team puts some serious juice behind this momentum.

I expect it and I wagered it heavily in Week 12 paying $5,000 for the Patriots team defense, the most expensive team defense in Week 12.

It’s never too early to look ahead to the upcoming season’s NFL draft and with the NY Giants mired in another miserable season it might be time to look ahead. There is not a strong class of QB’s coming out in 2022, but some are saying that this is the best class of tight ends ever on record. The 2010 draft which saw Rob Gronkowski and Jimmy Graham being selected can be argued as the greatest draft class for tight ends of all time. Colorado State’s Trey McBride and Texas A& M’s Jalen Wydermyer are the top 2 talents projected for this class. But at a projected 30 and 32 respectively, neither looks likely to go the Giants in the 2nd round. I have wanted to replace Evan Engram since the Giants drafted him and I still think he is the

#1 reason why Dave Gettleman should be fired. This was a first round draft pick that I positively could not stand and Engram never even showed as much as a glimpse. While the Giants sorely need to rebuild their defense at linebacker, improving their tight end play is important. It is a shame that the talent doesn’t line up favorably for them

in this upcoming draft.

The number of 1-year free agent signings in MLB clearly points to a work stoppage. The sport is littered with them right now and clearly the owners are not in a giving mood at the moment. Even the NY Yankees are showing signs of restraint and

Whither The Weather, Heather?

We’ve been in the coldest, wettest Fall in recent memory – but boaters, albeit fewer, are still out there (like we are.) So, if weather like we’ve been seeing is the “new normal”, we should understand the forces at play. This column is about that.

The Lake Effect

We’ve all heard of the “lake effect” where the Great Lakes dump so much snow on upstate New York and nearby states. Snow accumulations of 10’-12’ over the course of the winter in Buffalo are not unusual. The phenomenon occurs when cold air flows over the relatively warm lakes. The relative heat of the lakes leads to warming of the lowest levels of the atmosphere, which promotes rising air. When air rises in the atmosphere, it is cooled, and if enough upward motion (and thus enough cooling) results, then the air will reach its dew point and condensation will occur leading to cloud development. Eventually the clouds will produce precipitation.

The Ocean Effect

will indicate this progression of events, but offshore the situation may be different with clearing skies initially followed by the ocean effect conditions described above. And remember, all ye seaside residents, Montauk is 130 miles out at sea, relative to New York City. These long shorelines of the northeast can create “at sea” weather conditions, right here on land.

Why doesn’t that happen here, at the seashore where all the same characteristics are at hand – warmer water, winds and cold air? In fact, it does. The Ocean Effect just doesn’t get as much media attention since nobody lives over the ocean, and there are no roads to get clogged by snow. Also, the temperature gradient isn’t as great since we don’t get as much of that Canadian cold air as they do upstate.

Since most of us aren’t boating during the winter months, it isn’t much of an issue. However, with the extremes of weather we’ve been seeing, we can see the ocean effect both in the Fall and in the Spring.

And what doesn’t fall as snow falls as rain. And plenty of it as we’ve seen.

The accompanying satellite photo shows an excellent example of ocean effect conditions. Clear skies over the mainland and plenty of cloud cover over the ocean – and seashore communities. That would

be us.

The basics are very similar to the lake effect scenario; thus, it will occur when rather cold air flows over the warmer ocean waters.

Once the air has been over the water long enough (i.e. a bit offshore), it warms and rises - and clouds will form. And, if the temperature difference between the air and the

water is large enough, precipitation will develop from these clouds.

This situation will frequently occur behind a cold front which has moved off shore. Typically, a cold front will be accompanied by showers, then clearing skies are likely after the front has passed and the colder and drier air mass moves in. Forecasts in coastal locations

So if you happen to be operating over the Atlantic waters this Fall (or Spring) when a particularly cold air mass follows a cold front, be aware that despite forecasts of clearing, windy and colder conditions, it is very likely that considerable clouds will be experienced offshore, with the real potential for serious rain, or snow, at times.

• “If I take medication, I won’t be my true self. I’ll act strange and feel unusual.” Nothing could be further from the truth. Sooner or later, you’re going to have to decide to believe in yourself and stop giving in to the disabling fear that someone might not agree with something you do.

BY DOMINICK FORTE The third house of in the nine choirs of angels is called the Angels of the Earth.

They reside primarily within the plane of Heavenly spirituality.

They are, however, intimately involved in the affairs of the everyday lives of humans as they travel into and out of our reality.

These three choirs come into direct contact with humanity and are charged with specific tasks.

The first group of this final hierarchical trio are the Principalities. They are the bearers of the social mores necessary for the successful politics and administration within the earthly realm. The Principalities specialize in working with large groups and creating positive, interactive energies so that acceptable relations can flow.

They are also said to be the arbiters of taste and inspiration.

They affect us by bringing structure to the abstract, pushing the boundaries of what is possible

The Archangels comprise the second choir of the Angels of the Earth and are the best known of angelic orders. As is clear from their appearances in Scripture, their first and foremost duty is to carry out the will of God as it relates to humanity.

They bring the answers to prayers, which is the primary reason that so many people are aware of them. Often the presence of an Archangel is an omen that a great change is imminent.

Throughout Biblical history the Archangels have been used

by God to take on human vessels and act as His messengers and deputies. Those mentioned in the Bible by name are Michael,

Gabriel, and Raphael. The “-el” suffix at the end of the name of an Archangel indicates brightness or luminance. Of course, Gabriel

has the greatest notoriety in the New Testament having appeared to Mary to announce the birth of Jesus and Zachariah to announce

They are powerful and magnificent and radiate a perfect grace and spirituality. The Guardian angels are members of this lowest tier and are assigned to every person on Earth. They light and guide and rule and guard us in our everyday activities.

Protecting the Financial Interests of an Incapacitated Person

Q: How do you commence an Article 81 discovery and turnover proceeding?

A:

The purpose of an Article 81 discovery and turnover proceeding is to recover assets taken from an incapacitated person. The threshold question in an Article 81 Guardianship is whether there is a need for a guardian. After the court makes that determination, the alleged incapacitated person must either consent to the appointment or be deemed incapacitated after a hearing. If the court decides to appoint a guardian, they issue an Order and Judgment which outlines the powers granted the guardian.

One such power provided for in Section 81.21 of the Mental Hygiene Law is the power to commence a discovery and turnover proceeding.

A discovery and turnover proceeding provides a postjudgment mechanism to address financial exploitation.

The guardian can recover property that was improperly transferred before the guardianship. The logistics for the proceeding are set forth in Section 81.43 of the Mental Hygiene Law. A discovery and turnover proceeding is initiated by an Order to Show Cause and Petition. The Petition must set forth facts that tend to show that the incapacitated person's assets are wrongfully in the possession of a third party.

If the Petition alleges reasonable grounds to believe that a person has information about the property, the court must sign the Order.

Usually, the discovery portion

“There’s no such thing as bad weather, only bad clothing”. This famous Scandinavian saying has influenced millions of families to take early childhood learning outside and has become the mission statement of the growing outdoor education movement. The Community Library is getting in on the fun with Messy Meetups; an all-weather child-led program for the Pre-K set and their caregivers.

Local residents out walking dogs in Southhaven park must be very curious about the gathering of energetic, muddy toddlers who appear every Wednesday morning.

If they venture too close, they are likely to be splattered with mud, paint or bubbles. Activities vary but each week includes a tub of dirt and a collection of child-size pots, pans, scoops, bowls and shovels for making mud pies and dirt cupcakes. Playing with dinosaurs at the base of an oak tree is a mustdo, and popping giant bubbles as quickly as they appear never

gets boring for children or their adults. A nature-based art option is offered each week; favorite projects include rock painting and working with mud paint. Tree faces created with homemade playdough and assorted natural materials are always a big hit. The program is “child-led”, meaning that materials and activities are presented and the children decide how and when to participate. Caregivers are encouraged to follow the child’s interests. Sometimes that means dinosaurs end up in the bubble buckets, and that’s just fine.

Library Assistant Cathy Meinhold was inspired to start the program after learning about the trend toward outdoor messy play while caring for her granddaughter.

“I discovered mud kitchens and Forest Preschools, and I wanted to give families a way to test the ideas for themselves, I’m excited to help our families connect in a new way, outdoors.” The importance of children spending unstructured,

National Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day

BY REV. FREDERICK MILLER. PH.D. On Sunday morning, December 7, 1941 the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor, killing 2,403 Americans and injuring 1,178 others. The attack sank four U.S. Navy battleships and damaged four others. It also damaged three cruisers, three destroyers and one minelayer.

Aircraft losses were 188 destroyed and 159 Damaged. On December 8, in a joint session of Congress, President Franklin Roosevelt made his speech he called December 7, 1941 “a date which will live in infamy.” Congress then declared war on Japan. Three days later, Japan’s allies Germany and Italy declared war against the United States. For a second time, Congress reciprocated, declaring war on the European powers. More than two years after the start of World War II the United States entered World War II. The war in Europe ended on May 8, 1945. The war with Japan ended September 2, 1945.

However, even though we won the war we lost 291,557 servicemen in combat and 670,846 were wounded.

Six months after the air raid on Pearl Harbor, the Office of War Information

(OWI) was created. They concentrated on subjects like aircraft factories, training for war, women in the workforce and the armed services. The OWI documented and celebrated American patriotism in the military and on the home front.

Basically our whole civilian population supported the actions in the war.

In 1990, leading up to the 50th anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor, Congress established the Pearl Harbor Commemorative Medal. This was also known as the Pearl Harbor Survivor’s medal and was awarded to anyone who was in the U.S. Armed Forces and who was present in Hawaii on December 7, 1941, and participated in combat operations against the attack. The medal was also awarded to civilians who were killed or injured in the attack, or civilians involved in combat against the enemy during the attack.

In 1994, the Congress designated December 7 of each year as National Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day. The joint resolution was signed by President Bill Clinton on August 23,

1994. On November 29, Clinton issued a proclamation declaring December 7, 1994, the fist National Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day.

organizations may hold special events in memory of those killed or injured at Pearl Harbor. This year is the 80th anniversary of that attack.

On Pearl Harbor Day, the American flag should be flown at half-staff until sunset to honor those who died as a result of the attack on the U.S. military forces in Pearl Harbor. Pearl Harbor Day is not a federal holiday – government offices, school, and businesses do not close. Some

The Korean War, the Vietnam War and the Afghanistan War our troops simply packed up and came home without any signing of the end to the war or victories. As a result on not only the lack

of victories, but we all came home very differently than those that served in the World Wars. While they not only came home as heroes, they also came home in very large numbers together, usually transported by ships. Those of us from the Korean War came home by airplanes in very small numbers. The war was often referred to as a police action so we just came home and were forgotten.

Those coming home from Vietnam also came home in small numbers.

Unfortunately the public was against us entering the war and did not realize the fact that if our troops refused to go to war they would be put in jail, so they were often spit on when they came back home.

They, like the Korean veterans, were not acknowledged as veterans by the public.
