One Thousand COVID Kits Go Quickly

Local officials teamed up over the weekend to hand out a thousand home testing kits for COVID and KN-95 masks, and are making plans to distribute thousands more as they look to ease testing issues caused by Omicron and other variants of the viral disease.

Cars lined up outside the office of Assemblyman Doug Smith in Holbrook where the kits were placed through their windows by the assemblyman with the help of other elected officials including Suffolk Legislator Dominick Thorne, Brookhaven Councilmen Neil Foley and Kevin LaValle, Islip Councilwoman Mary Kate Mullen, Assemblyman Joe DeStefano, and Suffolk Legislators Anthony Piccirillo, Trish Bergin, Nick Caracappa and

Sunday, elected officials distributed COVID Tests and N95 Masks out to residents. With over 1000 test kits and masks were handed out to Community free of charge while supplies lasted. Delivering Infrastructure Wins for NY-1 in 2021 Op-ed by Congressman Lee Zeldin

As we still feel the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic and await the return to normalcy we were promised, Long Islanders have good reason to be frustrated with mounting crises at the state and federal levels. I share that frustration in so many ways; however, there were still positives and examples of multiple levels of government working together to deliver for Long Island that I am proud to have played a role in.

In 2021, we made major progress in several long awaited infrastructure projects that are essential to public safety, economic growth and quality of life in Suffolk County. Three of the top NY-1 infrastructure projects were with Montauk Point Lighthouse, Hospital Road Bridge, and the Fire Island to Montauk Point (FIMP) plan.

I was proud to work closely with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers every step of the way in the effort to protect Montauk Point Lighthouse, one of the most recognizable symbols in our region that evokes a sense of community among Long Islanders and attracts visitors from across the United States and foreign nations.

This historic landmark currently sits less than 100 feet from the receding edge of the bluff and its deteriorating stonework revetment is the only thing left protecting the lighthouse from being lost to the ocean due to erosion. I advocated for and helped secure federal funding for the project, and last January, the Army Corps awarded a $30.7 million contract to H&L Contracting of Bay Shore to carry out the restoration and protection of Montauk Point Lighthouse.

The heavy construction phase

on the lighthouse’s stonework revetment began last June, which will bolster the shoreline, provide safety reinforcements and ensure Montauk Point Lighthouse will continue to shine for generations to come.

I am also happy to report that we are in the homestretch of getting the much needed Hospital Road Bridge rebuild underway. Hospital Road Bridge has stood in East Patchogue for more than 60 years and served as a staple for area residents and an essential and lifesaving artery for law enforcement and first responders traveling to Long Island Community Hospital and the North Patchogue Fire Department.

However, the bridge has become a safety hazard and been deemed functionally obsolete by the New York State Department of Transportation for the last six years, meaning the bridge is not equipped to handle its traffic demand.

New York State awarded the project’s construction contract for the rebuilding to DeFoe Corporation of Mount Vernon, New York, for approximately $22.8 million in December. The State currently estimates preliminary work will begin early this year, groundbreaking will take place this spring and all construction work will be completed by the end of 2023.

I am extremely proud that our efforts, from my earliest days in office onward, have helped initiate the great strides we’re now making.

During my first term, I worked successfully to have my bipartisan SAFE Bridges Act included in the Fixing America’s Surface Transportation (FAST) Act, which was signed into law by President Obama on December 4, 2015.

My legislation with Congressman Sean Patrick Maloney modified federal highway law to make our state and local overpasses and bridges, such as Hospital

Road Bridge, once again eligible for federal funding through the National Highway Performance Program (NHPP). This helped pave the way for a funding agreement in 2016 for the $26 million project to widen and make major repairs to Hospital Road Bridge. Eighty percent of the project is federally funded, which was made possible by the infusion of federal money to the First Congressional District from the SAFE Bridges Act. The FIMP project broke ground on December 17, signifying the most

significant step yet toward making a reality this long overdue effort to improve and secure the long-term health and viability of Long Island’s environment, economy and coastal way of life. FIMP will provide essential dredging and shoreline projects spanning 83 miles of Long Island coastline and includes a variety of coastal and wetland restoration projects.

This project has been among my top priorities since I came to Congress in 2015, and my team and I worked tirelessly to successfully

secure authorization for FIMP during the 116th Congress, through December 2020 appropriations legislation. I am grateful to have worked closely with the Army Corps and so many other local stakeholders across all levels of government to ensure that all necessary Project Partnership Agreements were signed, contracts were awarded, and that we could efficiently move forward and finally get this underway for Long Islanders.

I will continue doing everything possible to champion other local projects at the federal level, such as the creation of a new Riverhead Town Square that will consist of a public gathering space, pedestrian connectivity and open vistas from Main Street to the riverfront, and will be a driving force for further revitalization in downtown Riverhead. I look forward to providing continued updates on these critical infrastructure projects for Long Island and delivering more wins for my constituents in 2022.

Disastrous Bail Laws Targeted by State Officials, Law Enforcement State Assemblyman Joe DeStefano and his assembly colleagues joined members of the Suffolk County Police Benevolent Association and other Long Island law enforcement organizations at the Capitol in Albany last week to advocate for the repeal of the disastrous Bail Reform law that is compromising the safety and security of communities around the State of New York. They echoed calls from the citizenry, and many elected officials on the federal, state, and local levels, that this law is dangerous and must be amended to hold criminals accountable for their

Even Supervisor Ed Romaine has invited Winters Bros. to apply for a zoning change through the town process and written the STB opposing a waiver exception.

County Executive Steve Bellone Cowers and Counts his Campaign Cash New York State NAACP Conference President Hazel Dukes and Brookhaven NAACP Chapter President Georgette Grier-Key today blasted Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone for his complicit silence regarding Winters Bros. misguided plans to build the largest solid waste transfer station in New York State history in Brookhaven without seeking any local zoning approvals.

“We know that Winters Bros. has given tens of thousands of dollars to Steve Bellone for his political campaigns, so it appears they have bought his silence on one of the most significant issues facing

his county,” Dr. Grier-Key said.

“Bellone has demonstrated that when confronted by environmental racism, he won’t stand up for our community but instead will hide behind sad excuses. He knows full well that the town of Brookhaven opposes a zoning exception but claims he can’t act until the Association of Towns takes a position. That is government-speak for ‘I am afraid of Winters Bros.’

This is a bad decision that will haunt Bellone long after he leaves office, especially if he ever thinks of running for office again.”

Winters Bros. has stated clearly, they intend to seek a federal waiver of local zoning laws from the U.S. Surface Transportation Board in Washington so they can build a massive waste transfer station that can and will accept tons and tons of New York City trash every

Neel demonstrated leadership with his service project by designing and building a bridge across a stream near the Fish Hatchery at Connetquot State

Park. He also led a group of Scouts and adults to replace a railing along a handicap-access fishing platform.

He is a graduate of East Islip High School and is currently attending SUNY Clarkson University where he is studying Mechanical and Aeronautical Engineering. Neel joins his brother Parth as the second Eagle Scout in their family.

“With the town taking a position on the zoning issue, there is no reason for Bellone to sit quiet – at least no legitimate reason. Steve Bellone clearly has no problem turning former county-owned property into a massive dump for New York City garbage and has shown zero concern that this would all take place in a potential Environmental Justice Area as determined by the state Department of Environmental Conservation,” said Dr. Grier-Key. “Silence is golden for Bellone, or at least green. But all the campaign cash in the world won’t overcome the fact he has refused to stand with people of color when we needed his help.”

in his own county. He should be ashamed.”

Legislator Dominick Thorne (R-Patchogue) was officially sworn in as Legislator of the 7th District on January 3rd, 2022 at the annual organizational meeting of the Suffolk County Legislature. Thorne will serve as the Vice Chair of the Fire, Rescue and Emergency Medical Services & Preparedness Committee, along with membership on the following committees: • Public Works, Transportation & Energy; • Budget & Finance; • Seniors & Human Services; and • Health Dominick has been a member in the Suffolk County Fire and Rescue world since the early 1980s. He spent 25 years as a volunteer in Firefighter and Emergency Medical Critical Care units and spent ten years

as a Captain of the North Patchogue Fire Department and Ambulance District.

Oasis Rehab and Nursing is Now an Official Affiliate of Rock Steady Boxing Program

Oasis Rehab and Nursing is partnering with nationally renowned “Rock Steady Boxing” and is offering this treatment approach to their patients. The Parkinson’s program at Oasis Rehab and Nursing is the first and only in-patient Parkinson’s Program at a skilled nursing facility in Suffolk County.

This program is geared towards people with all levels Parkinson’s disease as well as other movement disorders such as Huntington’s or essential tremor. As part of the Parkinson’s Disease Program, a patient will participate in Parkinson’s specific groups including Rocksteady Boxing classes lead by the program director.

The program director, Sherry Vigliotti, is an Occupational Therapy Assistant and has over 20 years of experience working with the geriatric and short-term rehabilitation populations, including Parkinson’s disease. She also holds LSVT BIG, Rocksteady Boxing, and Chair and Adaptive Yoga certifications. Sherry will use her expertise to develop

an individualized treatment plan and oversee rehab at Oasis.

Oasis has certified Physical, Occupational and Speech therapists specially trained to treat movement

specific equipment to help a patient achieve their optimal level of function.

The therapists will also provide extensive caregiver training prior to returning to the community.

Bergin Holds Victory Fundraiser Over 100 supporters recently attended Suffolk County Legislator Trish Bergin’s annual cocktail party.

Legislator Bergin thanked her supporters and fellow elected officials for all their support in last November’s election.

Bergin stressed the importance of the new Republican majority working together and focusing to improve services, lower fees and taxes and improve public safety.

Funds raised from last week’s event will be used as to assist with Bergin’s re-election campaign.

An on-site board-certified Neurologist will see patients regularly to address physical and cognitive symptoms, provide medication management, and communicate with their community neurologist or physician.

Since many individuals with Parkinson’s also experience non-motor symptoms, such as hallucinations, anxiety, or depression, Oasis also has a Psychiatrist and Psychologist on-site to assist in managing those symptoms and mental health.

Once a patient has completed their rehab at Oasis, they offer various forms of community follow up and support. They also offer community support groups as well as monthly Rock Steady Boxing classes that are open to the community at no cost.

WFHS Girls’ Varsity Basketball Off to Best Start in Nearly a Decade

It has been a long time coming for the William Floyd High School girls’ varsity basketball team. With not a single senior on the roster, the young Colonials are off to their best start to a season since 2012-13 - the last time William Floyd made the playoffs - and are dominating on the court with a starting lineup that features three sophomores and making a statement to the rest of League I that they are back and prepared to make a run at returning to the playoffs.

Through 11 games the Colonials are 8-3 overall (3-2 in League I) and are receiving major contributions from underclassmen, including

sophomore Kayla Gilmore and Jacky Sutherland. Both players are averaging high double-digit points per game, (Kayla 17 and Jacky 15.5) and are the only teammates in Suffolk County that are in the top 25 of average points per game this season. Sutherland leads the team in three pointers, and, Kayla became the first Colonial ever to record a quadruple-double earlier this season, recording 24 points, 11 rebounds, 10 assists and 11 steals against Riverhead. She also leads the team in assists with an average of 3.6 per game.

has also played very well for the Colonials averaging seven points per game and is the team’s leading rebounder at eight per game.

Junior Keyaisia Brewster is second on the team in assists at 3.5 per game and is second on the team in three-pointers (Jacky Sutherland).

Sophomore Kayden Meyer rounds out the starting lineup and has played big minutes and been an outstanding defensive player for the Colonials. “Juniors Alyvia Verga and Payton LaVallee and eighthgrader Natalie Samlihan have provided big minutes and made key plays for us off the bench,” Coach Sinclair added.

Still a very young team, these Colonials have been crafting their skills together for many years.

Gilmore, Sutherland and Brewster have been playing on an AAU (Amateur Athletic Union) team together since they were fourth graders. All have been playing big minutes for the varsity team since they were in middle school. “The girls play basketball throughout the offseason together at open gyms with our coaching staff and have participated in the Town of Brookhaven girls’ basketball summer league since they were called up to the varsity,” said Coach Sinclair.

As for his goals and expectations

Kayla Gilmore (No. 5) and Kayden Meyer (No. 4) in a game against Patchogue-Medford. for the rest of the season, Coach Sinclair would love to see his team qualify for a playoff spot in the toughest public school girls’ basketball league on Long Island and win a first-round game. “The furthest a girls basketball team has gone since playing in the current playoff bracket system is the second round during the 2009-10 season.

To match that feat would be great.

Hopefully, if we make the playoffs we can advance further.”

Another goal for Coach Sinclair is to win 13 games, which would be a school record since William Floyd

moved to League I. “I would like us to continue to improve on both the offensive and defensive end of the court as our schedule gets tougher by playing other League I schools.”

The full roster includes Ava Tiedemann, Keyaisia Brewster, Jacky Sutherland, Kayden Meyer, Kayla Gilmore, Natalie Samlihan, Payton Lavallee, Amy Lin, Alyvia Verga, Daviah Richardson, Hailey O’Connor, Emma DiMaio and Gabby Hanlon. Varsity coaches include: Coach Sinclair and assistant coaches Madison Gunderson and Nicole Alesi.

South Country Athletes Earn Honors Seven Bellport High School fall athletic teams have been recognized by the New York State Public High School Athletic Association as ScholarAthlete Teams.

To earn the recognition, 75% of each team was required to hold a GPA above 90%.

The hearts of Brookhaven Elementary School students in the South Country School District “grew three sizes” as they celebrated Grinch Day on Dec. 17.

During the day, students donning green clothing and hats reading “My heart grew three sizes today” celebrated Dr. Seuss’ cherished character from “How the Grinch Stole Christmas.”

The day’s activities were an

opportunity for students to spread kindness, just like the Whos in Whoville. They engaged in various learning experiences that supported English language arts, math and STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics) activities.

“Much more, students and staff celebrated how the Grinch adopted the holiday spirit of kindness,” said Principal Dr. Rebecca Raymond.

Dear Regional Director, NYS DOT – Region 10, I am writing you about the apparent illegal storage of several boats on New York State Department of Transportation (NYS DOT) property in Shirley, New York. These boats are stored at the northern end of Maple Avenue on the south side of Sunrise Highway on NYS DOT property.

This matter was brought to the attention of Senator Alexis Weik’s office who contacted your office approximately a month ago. The Town’s Law Department contacted your office on November 8th about this dumping on your property.

To date, we are not aware of any action to remove these derelict boats that are an eyesore by your office. I would ask that the NYS DOT seek to immediately remove these boats and seek action against the boat owners when they can be determined from the boats’ registration numbers.

Greater Mastic Beach Chamber Holds January Meeting

On January 11, 2022 The Chamber of Commerce held a public meeting featuring Brookhaven Town Supervisor Ed Romaine, where he discussed plans to revitalize Mastic Beach. The first topic he had discussed was expanding the sewer pipes from Mastic Road to Neighborhood Road. The positive effects of expanding the sewer pipes will be beneficial for the Mastic Beach community, their business developments and the environment, including the

Forge River. The cost for this project started at $167 million, however as they continue to do more research they anticipate it is going to be more. The next vital conversation Ed Romaine discussed was the buildings on Neighborhood Road that need to be demolished due to code violations. These buildings include The Old Shoe Company, 323 Neighborhood Rd. Ed Romaine promised that if the owners of these buildings do not take them down the Town of Brookhaven will. He then went on to the talk about the

marshland that that the Town of Brookhaven purchased, stating that this project will restore the salt marsh, provide safe wetland areas, help prevent future flooding and protect local species that rely on these salt marshes. The Tri-Hamlet park was another important discussion made by Ed Romaine.

The 99 acre property will undergo a multi-year plan with 2 stages. Stage 1 will be developing walking paths, gravel parking lots and bathrooms. This stage is looking to be completed by spring ‘22. Stage 2 will include playing fields, however this will be 2-3 years down the road.

With these positive outlooks on Mastic Beach hopefully the community will join together to help assist these beneficial projects. Ed Romaine concluded with answering questions that the local business owners had over the revitalization.

Some have concerns over the Town using Eminent Domain however Ed Romaine assured them the Town has never used Eminent Domain to revitalize communities. As the meeting concluded Ed Romaine said there will be a public meeting held in February to discuss further

BY KARL GROSSMAN A Suffolk County native, Dr. Edward Bonahue is the new president of Suffolk County Community College. With 25,000 students, Suffolk Community is the largest community college in the 64-college State University of New York system.

Raised in Setauket, Dr. Bonahue, is warm and affable, as was clear in a conversation I had with him recently. He is a seasoned college administrator, a scholar in English literature, and long a professor with a love for teaching.

“I would say I had a love for teaching after I got to graduate school, and I taught my first classes,” he told Compass News, the student newspaper at the college’s Ammerman Campus. “I think that’s where my love is… working with a class of students” and with their learning seeing “the light bulb” going off.

Both his parents were educators, teachers and guidance counselors in the Sachem School District.

“I think from the standpoint of my family and the value that we have always had in education, I’m proud that just about everybody in my family has had something

to do with public education over the years.”

The Ammerman Campus in Selden, the college’s main campus, is named for its first president, Dr. Albert Ammerman. He came to Suffolk from Michigan where he had been dean of instruction at Dearborn Junior College and led in the creation of Suffolk Community. Founded in 1959, it offered classes at Riverhead High School and Sachem High School in Ronkonkoma until the main campus opened in 1962.

With Suffolk County 86 miles in length, Dr. Ammerman started planning in the ‘60s for what became the Eastern campus. It opened in Northampton, south of Riverhead, in 1977. In the ‘70s, when the state made land available at the edge of Pilgrim State Psychiatric Center in Brentwood, Dr. Ammerman worked on what became the Michael J. Grant Campus (named for a presiding officer of the Suffolk Legislature) on it. It opened in 1974.

The use of drugs causes many dangers depending on the kind of drugs used, the length of use, and many other factors. One thing many of these dangers have in common is that they affect not only the user but also have a negative impact on those around them. The physical dangers of drug addiction include: withdrawal symptoms when trying to cut back or quit, irregular heart rate, high blood pressure, lung damage and seizures. It also causes injury (both accidental and self-inflicted), overdose and death.

The term “drug” refers to any chemical substance that alters the chemistry of the brain, affects feelings and perception, or changes

the way the body functions.

Drugs include prescription medications, illegal street drugs, marijuana, nicotine, and alcohol. Some individuals seek out drugs in order to relax and unwind, while others use drugs to expand their perceptions or give energy. For many addicts drugs are a way to relieve physical or emotional pain.

However, continued use leads to addiction.

Active-duty and veterans of the armed forces face substance use problems. Over 1.6 million soldiers have been in theater in Afghanistan or Iraq since 2001. The pace of the deployment was faster than previous deployments.

Redeployments were also more common than in the past. Studies have shown that veterans who experienced combat or other traumatic situations are at significantly

both from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

He became a professor at Santa Fe College in Gainesville, Florida, then chair of its Department of Humanities and Foreign Languages, then associate vice president for academic affairs and then provost and vice president for academic affairs, before returning

to Suffolk County in May to take the helm of Suffolk Community.

“SUNY Suffolk is an outstanding college that changes students’ lives every day, and I look forward to being part of the Suffolk community,” he said upon his appointment.

The Compass News article related that Dr. Bonahue, “after being a professor for so many years…misses the interaction with students.” He commented: “One of the challenges of serving as the college president is always keeping the students’ experiences in mind; how is the student experiencing the college.” He spoke of trying to “get out on campus regularly to see what’s going on in the classrooms, buildings, labs, and so forth.”

The “three missions he would like to accomplish” as president of Suffolk Community was first increasing the number of students graduating. “We have learned,” he said, “that although we are a very large college, and we graduate far more students than any other SUNY community college, we could improve the graduation rate,” encouraging students to complete “their two year degree

and then transfer.” Students who graduate with degrees are 50% more likely to go on and complete Bachelor’s Degrees. The second is “to ensure that the career-focused programs that Suffolk offers are closely aligned with the workforce needs of Suffolk County and Long Island.” And a third involves how Suffolk is changing. “In 2010, the minority population of Suffolk County was 28%. By 2020, that minority percentage increased to 36%. Largely growth in our Hispanic communities, a little growth in our African American communities, some growth in our Asian American communities.” He said he wanted to see this diversity reflected in the college’s student body under “equity,” providing “the support that makes you feel at home, gives you a sense that you belong, and allows you to connect with a sense of community.”

“I think I’m a good match for Suffolk County Community College,” said Dr. Bonahue, “because a lot of what I learned about higher education came from the classroom. And so in my heart of hearts, I like to keep that mission of student learning and student success first.”

They fear that once diagnosed with a disorder that they will have to face the rest of their lives labeled with a mental disorder, thus preventing them from many jobs and other opportunities.

Big Problems for Big Blue

BY TOM BARTON The New York Giants were once again behind the rest of the league when they took a day longer to fire their head coach, but when all is said and done Joe Judge is gone, and the Giants fans are happy ... for now. New York heard their fan base loud and clear when they fired Judge, who’s criticism began as soon as he was hired. It was reported that there were shocked personnel in New England that he even got a look, and it proved to be warranted spectacism.

So as we turn the page on the Joe Judge regime the problems with the Giants still persist. New York is bringing on a new head coach with turmoil in the front office, after their GM retired, questions at quarterback, and distrust from the fan base. The major problem though is that plenty of other teams need a new head coach, and the Giants job is possibly the least attractive

among all the teams looking.

The Bears and Jaguars have bright young quarterbacks, who can be franchise changing talent.

The Broncos will very likely bring in a top QB free agent, and maybe Aaron Rodgers, to compliment a dynamic and young offense. The Raiders might have an opening and they are a playoff team. Miami was on the verge of a playoff spot and have some questions at QB, but the talent is unquestioned and Minnesota has security at all of the major positions and a very winnable division.

That brings us to the Giants.

The next GM and head coach will have a lot of questions to answer. Early betting lines for next year show New York as a top 5 worst team in the league.

They have to decide what will be Daniel Jones’s future with the team? Should Saquon Barkley get an extension? What is

It is of course a hypothetical question that I am asking, but it seems to be some bad teams that got into the playoffs this year. The Pittsburgh Steelers behind an aged Ben Roethlisberger, a rookie running back, and a team defense which wasn’t its traditional strong unit don’t even look like they will compete against the Kansas City Chiefs in the first matchups of the playoffs. Perhaps a shame that Roethlisberger’s career ends with this defeat to the Chiefs but it seems likely to end this way.

Look at this list of QB’s that the Eagles got wins over – Teddy Bridgewater, Sam Darnold, Jake Fromme, Garrett Gilbert, Jared Goff, Taylor Heinicke, Matt Ryan, Trevor Siemian, and Zach Wilson. Those are some backups, overmatched rookies and then Matt Ryan in an off-year. This team didn’t deserve to make the playoffs and don’t look capable of matching up with Tom Brady and Tampa Bay; Tampa Bay should be a 10 point favorite and could even win by 20.

The Las Vegas Raiders were 6-7 at one point this season. They will compete in the first round against Super Joe Burrow in their matchup and we are witnessing the emergence of the next great QB with Burrow in Weeks 16 and 17 Joe threw for a combined 971 yards and 8 touchdowns. Joe’s 2nd half stats were totally dominant and not comparable to what he did in the first half. When you look at the teams that the Raiders beat, there were 3 backup QB’s that they faced, so the quality of their record is very suspect.

Now you may be saying to yourself, Chuck, isn’t this what to expect from wild card rounds these days? Personally, I think the Patriots game will be a terrific game, as Mack Jones really impressed me in his rookie season. And the Bills certainly built themselves a world class defense. It’s almost a shame that one of these teams will be sent home after the opening weekend.

I feel the same way about the Arizona Cardinals matching up with the LA Rams in the wild card weekend. Kyler Murray at times looked like he was emerging into the most dynamic QB in football this year. But Joe Burrow certainly stole much of that thunder. To me,

do have the #5 and #7 picks in the draft. This draft might not have a pure top prospect, but there is plenty of talent that can fit New York’s needs. There is also speculation that Rodgers, Russell Wilson or Matt Ryan could also be headed to the Big Apple to fix their situation at QB. Kadarius Toney is a budding superstar and there is plenty of promising talent on both sides of the ball. The New York job is possibly the worst job for potential candidates, but all is not lost because this is still New York. This is still the NFC Least, and the allure is still there to an extent.

We live in an NF world where fortunes of teams can change overnight. The Giants need a lot of help, but with Gettleman and Judge gone, we have to assume that help is on the way.

Did Too Many Teams Make the NFL Playoffs? good possibility. And despite the injuries and banged up situation that the Bus find themselves in, it’s a great story to pair these two QB’s up against each other.

Arizona looks perfectly capable of being a first round playoff exit.

And of course, waiting in the divisional round are the Tennessee Titans and the return of Derrick Henry. This looks like a terrific matchup between Cincinnati and Joe Burrow against the most dominant running back in the league at this time. I see this game being determined by a field goal or less and will be the best game of the entire playoffs in my estimation. This is why we play the games, to determine who is actually best. So despite a few

clunkers in the wild card rounds, these playoffs will end with some fantastic matchups. I would roster Derrick Henry in my playoff pools. It could have been a 2,000 rushing yard season for him. But a return to the playoffs and possible domination is a great story. And Joe Burrow is just good enough to ruin this story for Derrick Henry.

At this point, you should be realizing that I don’t rule out a repeat Super Bowl matchup between Pat Mahomes and Tom Brady. A Kansas City and Tampa Bay rematch looks like a

The players are doing very well at the moment. The worst thing the owners do is play games with the service time on when players get their careers started. Players who are ready to play in the show sometimes wait 2 months (April and May) before they are called up so that their eventual arbitration date gets pushed back. But the rules are written that way and so it’s smart business for the owners to do business this way. If that is the wedge issue for the players they are playing a weak hand.

Nevertheless, I expect this first round to be non-productive and both sides are certainly likely to harden their positions. We will probably have some bad news to report in my next article.

Wave Theory – And Practice, Part II

When we wrote about waves last week, I noted that we’d get back to waves and talk about different kinds of waves - tsunamis, deep, shallow, non-wind, etc – and the effect they have on mariners. This column completes that promise.

Wind Creates Waves

Almost always, this is true.

Almost. There are what scientists call “non-wind” waves; the two most common are the tides and tsunamis.

Back on May 12th, I closed the column by noting that the longest wave on the planet was in fact that wave created by the Moon, lifting the water up and dragging it around the Earth. The closing question was, “what is the frequency?” The frequency of the tidal wave (not to be confused with a tsunami, often called a tidal wave) created by the rotation of

the Moon around the Earth is about 12 ½ hours. The wavelength is half of the circumference of the Earth itself or roughly 12,451 miles. Looking at exhibit #1, you can easily see the representation of the wavelength.

As you may recall from the column on tides and seamanship, the tides themselves are divided into 2 types – Spring Tides, when the Earth, Moon and Sun align directly (higher highs, lower lows) and Neap Tides, when the Earth and Moon are at right-angles to the Sun and cancel somewhat the gravitational pulls (lower highs, higher lows.)

The tides are rarely dangerous, except to the skipper who doesn’t leave enough slack in his dock lines when making his boat fast to a fixed pier. But they are enormously powerful. How powerful? Over

80% of all the wave energy in the world is tied up in the tides. In fact, this energy and the friction related to it has actually lengthened the day on our planet. Over the past billion years, the day has lengthened from 19 hours to the present 24 hours.

What about what we called “tidal waves” as children – Tsunamis?

Traveling at speeds of 400 knots, tsunamis form in response to sudden changes in the shape and location of the sea floor, often due to landslides or earthquakes. Although devastating to affected areas, they are a small portion of the wave energy in the sea. Like any wave that breaks on the shore, these enormously high-speed waves pile up at the water’s edge as all that energy compresses, much like a long train of train cars would pile up in an accident, rises up over itself and devastates all before it.

Wind DOES Create Waves

Jumping ahead since we’ve laid

the ground work in a prior column, take it as a given that the wind does create waves. And, on a windy but pleasant day, you can see the white caps marching in lock-step down the bays and in the offing to the ocean’s horizon. But many mariners have experienced “confused seas” where the waves seem to be coming from everywhere and typically these are foul weather seas. What is going on? The wind seems to be coming from one direction – but the waves aren’t. Why? This is due to the geometry of storms. Most storms are low pressure systems, with cyclonic winds orbiting the storm center.

The cyclonic wind field creates waves moving in every direction.

These newly formed waves tend to be steeper and more severe and have shorter periods than waves outside of a generation area. After wind waves form, their growth is limited by the duration of energy input. Energy input is determined by the velocity,

duration, and fetch of the wind field.

Waves reach an equilibrium state (the “fully developed sea”) if all three of these variables remain constant for sufficient duration. For higher velocities, these conditions are rarely realized, because the waves tend to run out of the area with high winds.

Even in a hurricane 300 miles across, a typical large wave will move out of the source area within half a day, far too little time to allow development of a “full sea.”

So, there you have it. Wind creates waves – except for the longest wave, the tides, and the most destructive, the tsunami…

Medicaid Eligibility in 2022

My husband may require care in a Nursing facility. I was considering applying for Medicaid but I have heard that we could lose everything if we accept assistance through the Medicaid program. Is this correct?

No, however this is a common misconception.

Medicaid is a means tested program, so applicants must meet certain income and asset requirements. Rest assured, despite these requirements, there are protections for spouses who remain in the community.

In 2022, to be eligible for Chronic Medicaid (the program which assists in paying for Nursing Home Care) applicants may have up to $16,800.00 in resources. In addition, the applicant can own qualified retirement accounts in any amount so long as they are taking the required minimum distributions (RMD). RMDs are based on the life expectancy table used in the specific county where one is applying for Medicaid. A life insurance with less than a $1,500 cash surrender value is also allowed. Finally, an irrevocable pre-arranged burial account is an exempt asset.

These guidelines are different

for married couples so that the “well” spouse does not become impoverished. When a Medicaid applicant is married, the guidelines permit community spouses to retain up to $137,400.00 in liquid assets. Additionally, a primary residence is exempt so long as the community spouse is living there.

Assuming your husband has assets which exceed $16,800.00, these assets can be transferred to you to bring him below the Medicaid threshold amount.

New York’s spousal refusal provisions provide even more protection. The community spouse can elect to sign a document which allows them to keep assets above the $137,400.00 threshold.

This includes assets which were previously in the name of the spouse that requires care in a nursing facility. Spousal refusal is a formal statement declaring that the well spouse requires the assets to live.

Medicaid treats income differently than assets. An applicant

Community Medicaid program.

This Medicaid program pays for care in your home. Under this model, the asset rules stay the same, but all income can usually be retained. Under Community Medicaid, the general rule is that the applicant may retain a monthly income of $934.00 plus a disregard of $20 bringing the total to $954.00.

However, any excess income can be directed to a Pooled Income Trust for the benefit of the Medicaid applicant. Excess income over the $954.00 is deposited into the Pooled Income Trust and can be used to pay the household expenses of the Medicaid applicant. for Chronic Medicaid may only keep income in the amount of $50.00 per month. Any excess income goes to the nursing home toward cost of care. Medicaid pays the rest. The community spouse may keep $3,435.00 per month of income. Any of their income above that amount must go to the spouse’s cost of care in the nursing home. If

the community spouse’s income is less than this maximum, part of the Medicaid recipient’s income can be used to bring the well spouse to the $3,435.00 limit. If the community spouse’s income exceeds the maximum, spousal refusal is available to avoid contributing to the cost of care.

Hell and Satan

BY DOMINICK FORTE The entire demonic superstructure, with hell located far from the pearly gates of heaven, is a relatively recent Christian concept.

While the idea of monstrous fiends and ghoulish demons was not entirely the creation of the Middle Ages, the writers of that time certainly managed to embellish the idea until little remained of the original Jewish images.

The dark collective consciousness of medieval Europe was an extraordinary field of imaginative energy.

It was an era of magic and a new preoccupation with the mystery of alchemy, the Kabbalah, and other areas of esoteric knowledge. In such an atmosphere both angels and demons were summoned by holy or demonic practitioners, respectively. The secret pentacles used in magical evocation opened to reveal legions of angels and devils emanating from majestic and towering heavens or dank,

hideous depths.

In order to understand the nature of the fallen angels who are believed to inhabit those realms of darkness, it is necessary to look at the profile of Satan, the being who is the most mysterious and surprising angel of all. Hell is inseparable from the Evil One. This dark being is the complete foil to the Archangel Michael. In some traditions the Prince of Darkness looks through a dark mirror at his reflection as the twin brother of Jesus Christ, the Word of God. For sure, without Satan there would be no need for a Chosen One to defeat him.

Satan, originally known as Lucifer before the fall, was one the mightiest and most magnificent of the Seraphim, the highest tier in the of hierarchical nine Choirs of Angels. In this original form he is depicted as having twelve wings. Gregory of Nazianzus says of him

metaphorically that before his fall he had worn the rest of the angels as “a garment, transcending all in glory and knowledge.” Surprisingly, St.

It seems appropriate that this Prince of Deceit and Deception should mask himself in so many aliases. Yet

He is the pride of Lucifer, the greed of Mammon, the anger of Satan, the lustfulness of Asmodeous, the gluttony of Beelzebub, the envy of Leviathan, and the sloth of Belphegor all rolled up into one disgusting, detestable, diabolical essence.

Satan is the avowed adversary of God as in his wickedness he lays his snares, leading us into the temptations of materialistic activities while he and his demonic surrogates roam the earth seeking the destruction of souls.
