Both candidates are former federal prosecutors.

As the candidates approached the finish line last night, unofficial results show Tierney winning 57.33% of the vote and defeating Sini who received 42.65% of the vote.

Results for Brookhaven Town Clerk showed longtime incumbent Donna Lent maintained a consistently strong lead over her opponent, Ira Costell. Donna Lent received 68% to Ira Costells 32%.

In races for the Suffolk County Legislature whose districts are located within Brookhaven Town, Suffolk Republicans have taken control of the Legislature and defeated some longtime incumbent Democratics.

In the 1st District Democrat Legislator Al Krupski and 2nd District Democrat Legislator Bridget Fleming ran virtually unopposed campaigns. At press time, both Krupski and Fleming appeared to have won.

In a special face-off election on Tuesday, May 25, 2021 for Suffolk's 3rd LD, Republican James Mazzarella beat out Kate Browning winning over 60% of the vote. The pair faced off in last night's 2021 election where Mazzarella crushed Browning again 67% to 33%.

In the 4th LD, Republican incumbent Nick Caracappa crushed his Democratic opponent 71.43% to 28.51%.

In LD 5, Democrat incumbent Kara Hahn ran a tight race over Republican candidate Salvatore SB Isabella. Unofficial results in this race are to close to call.

Sixth District Democrat incumbent Legislator Sarah Anker was defeated by Republican Challenger Brendan Sweeney. Sweeney received 49.11% to Anker’s 42.10%. The Conservative candidate in

this race, Anthony De Simone received 8.77%.

Suffolk County 7th District Democrat Legislator and Presiding Officer Rob Calarco was defeated by Republican challenger Dominick Thorne.

Thorne an active business and civic leader received 54.01% to Calarcos 45.97%.

8th District Republican incumbent Anthony Piccirillo and 12th District Republican incumbent Leslie Kennedy also ran virtually unopposed races.

At press time, polls showed both incumbents winning.

With Republicans knocking out the two long term incumbents in Brookhaven and winning a seat in Huntington they have regained control of the legislature and ultimately the Presiding Officers position in January 2022.

Mastic Beach Teen Killed

Suffolk County Police Homicide Squad detectives are investigating a shooting that killed a man in Mastic Beach last week.

Police officers responded to 244 Bayview Drive after a 911 caller reported a man had been shot at approximately 9:10 p.m.

When police arrived, they found Marcel Arrington lying in front of the residence with a gunshot

wound.

Arrington, 18, of Mastic Beach, was transported to Long Island Community Hospital in East Patchogue, where he was pronounced dead.

Detectives are asking anyone with information on the shooting to call the Homicide Squad at 631-852-6392 or Crime Stoppers at 800-220-TIPS.

Tony-Winning Musical A Gentleman’s Guide to Love & Murder Opens at The Gateway November 17 and Will Run Through December 4, 2021 with Original Broadway Creative Team Members.

The Tony Award-winning Best Musical A Gentleman’s Guide to Love & Murder begins performances at The Gateway in Bellport on November 17 and will run through December 4.

A Gentleman's Guide to Love & Murder is the knock-'em-dead, uproarious hit and the most nominated show of the 2014 season. With ten Tony nominations and four wins, including Best Musical, Book, Direction, and Costumes; it also earned seven Drama Desk Awards (including Best Musical), four Outer Critics Circle Awards (including Best Musical), and one Drama League Award (Best Musical).

When the low-born Monty Navarro finds out that he's eighth in line for an earldom in the lofty D'Ysquith family, he figures his chances of outliving his predecessors are slight and sets off down a far more ghoulish path. Can he knock off his unsuspecting relatives without being caught and become the ninth Earl

Brookhaven Town Accepts $1.25 Million Check from Winters Bros. as Residential Recycling is Expanded In May 2021, the Town of Brookhaven expanded its residential recycling program to include polypropylene #5 plastics. At that time, the Town’s Material Recycling Facility (MRF) in Yaphank was upgraded with a new sorting line to allow for the recovery of the #5 plastic from curbside recycling. Brookhaven residents responded with a significant boost in their recycling efforts which translated into an increase in the sale of recycling commodities. Uniting Students Through Gaming A new gaming team at Bellport High School, Bellport eSports, is providing students who wouldn’t normally participate in sports, drama or music with a platform to be a part of a unified team.

“These students can get a taste of competition, be a part of a team and compete for scholarship money,” said club adviser William Langhan.

Supervisor Ed Romaine said, “Brookhaven residents have stepped up and increased their recycling in a big way and this check for $1.25 million is the result of their efforts.

Councilman Loguercio said, "Recycling is such an integral part of protecting the environment along with the entire waste management process. Thank you to Winters Brothers and all those residents in the Town of Brookhaven for doing their part to help keep our town beautiful and safe for our future generations."

Three days a week after school, the team members vie against schools from around the country in games such as Rocket League and Valorant. Already, the team boasts 20 students who are participating in the gaming contests on a rotating basis using gaming computers donated by the South Country Public Library.

The idea for the team was developed a few months prior to the COVID-19 school shutdown through a collaboration between Langhan and Bellport Middle School Assistant Principal Reinaldo Latorre. The pair, who are gamers themselves, worked to evolve their gaming team idea into an opportunity for interested students to use their gaming skills in a competition setting.

“I encourage all high schools to get involved in this,” said Langhan. “It provides so much positive energy to students who want to be a part of their school.”

Langhan plans on expanding the team to include additional gaming options and would like to ultimately build a gaming lab at the high school.

BY KARL GROSSMAN U.S. Postmaster General Louis DeJoy, who has roots in Suffolk County—in Melville—is under intense fire as he directs the U.S. Postal Service to slow delivery times and at the same time raise its prices.

“U.S. Postmaster General Louis DeJoy Under Pressure to Resign,” began the headline of an Associated Press article in June. “As he approaches his first anniversary at the U.S. Postal Service’s helm, DeJoy is under mounting pressure to resign,” it said.

“He’s been criticized by lawmakers from both parties for changes to the agency that have resulted in service slowdowns. Democrats are particularly worried that he’s purposely undermining the post office…”

The piece continued that “the scrutiny” of Mr. DeJoy “has intensified as the Justice Department investigates him over political fundraising at the North Carolina-based company he ran prior to his work at the post office.”

Before moving to North Carolina, Mr. DeJoy had run a trucking business based in Suffolk County, New Breed Logistics, which he took over from

his father, Dominick DeJoy, also of Melville, who died in 2001.

The attack on Louis DeJoy has been going on for some time.

As the Boston Globe in an editorial last August headed, “Louis DeJoy Must Resign. Now,” stated: “The postmaster general has proved himself unfit to serve as the Postal Service chief and has undermined American democracy in the process….Since DeJoy has taken over the post office, the agency has curtailed overtime pay, removed over 600 mail sorting machines, and either locked up or taken out letter collection boxes. These supposedly cost-saving measures have resulted in slowing down mail delivery, potentially disenfranchising voters at a massive scale come November if their mail-in ballots are not processed or delivered on time.”

“The Postal Service,” said the Boston Globe,” is an agency that should remain nonpartisan — a standard that is difficult to uphold under DeJoy, a major donor to Donald Trump and the GOP. Before joining the post office, DeJoy was a finance

Jim Hightower, editor of of The Hightower Lowdown, declared earlier this year: “Once Trump megadonor Louis DeJoy—who has no postal experience whatsoever—was sworn in as Postmaster General last June, he abruptly set about slashing overtime, taking crucial equipment out of service, and rewriting work rules—moves he admitted would result in delays and worse service. You don’t have to be in Who’s Who to know what’s what….

DeJoy’s monkeywrenching was just one more step…by corporate interests to destroy our public post office.”

Nevertheless, Mr. DeJoy told critics in Congress in June: “Get used to me.” Appearing before the House of Representatives Oversight and Reform Committees at a hearing on “Legislative Proposals to Put the Postal Service on Sustainable Financial Footing,” Mr. DeJoy testified: “I’m not a political appointee. I was selected by a bipartisan board of governors and I’d really appreciate if you’d get that straight.”

The Postmaster General can only be removed by the Postal Service governing board which has nine voting members. President Biden has appointed three new members of the board but, by law, no more than five can be from the same party. Two existing Democratic members have publicly supported Mr. DeJoy and his “Delivering for America” plan.

Meanwhile, as Newsday in an article in October, headlined “What to know about slow mail, higher prices,” related, “starting” last month what the Postal Service labels “new service standards… are going into effect. That means it will take longer for certain kinds of mail—about 40% of first class and 7% of periodicals” to get delivered. The piece

BY TOM BARTON The New York fanbase has been used to winning for as long as sports has been around it seems. The Yankees have the most championships in the sports world, and carried the 90's and early 2000's like no team in recent memory. The Mets captivated the 80's and made a World Series just 6 years ago. The New York football Giants won championships in the 80's, 90's, 2000's and 2010's. So, New York fans have a penchant for expecting their teams to win. But alas, we are in some dark days of New York sports. The Yankees (3rd best odds to win the World Series) were ousted yet again, and their fanbase is calling for the managers, and GM's head. The Mets have a new owner and they want him to spend, but the team who were the favorites to win the NL East, made terrible decisions and the future looks bleak. The Giants have the worst record in the NFL since 2017, and

the Jets ... well they are the Jets, which is to say a perennial disappointment.

But, that is where the sadness ends. It might be a different look for New York fans, but if we switch sports, we see plenty of potential for a championship ahead. The Brooklyn Nets are the overwhelming favorites to win a title this season at 2 to 1. The Nets have star power in Durant and Harden, they have a good, and well respected bench, and by all accounts are hands down the team to beat in the NBA. Ok, maybe the new, forced together, superstar laden Nets aren't your cup of tea (or for New Yorkers caw-fee). Can I interest you in the New York Knicks? The Knicks are building something that is becoming seriously interesting. After beating all expectations last season they are expected to grow yet again in this year. New York has established

The Kansas City Chiefs roll into their matchup in Week 8 against the NY Giants coming off of Pat Mahomes’ worst start in the last 3 seasons. A lot of people saw this player as incapable of having a bad game and then he ran into Tom Brady in last year’s Super Bowl and he wasn’t the best QB on the field that day. In an NFL season where there is no shortage of teams having disappointing seasons, the 3-4 start that the Chiefs have gotten off to might be one of the most surprising.

The San Francisco 49’ers, Miami Dolphins, Seattle Seahawks and the Washington Football Team were expected to be playoff contenders in the eyes of many prognosticators in the preseason. None can possibly be considered a favorite to make the playoffs right now and the Seattle defense has been as big a disappointment as any in the league. The Miami Dolphins got off to a 1-6 start. They had rapidly changed their course after bottoming out several years ago and were on a good rebuilding path. They have stumbled.

For followers of the ESPN’s Football Power Index (FPI) the pre-season indicators have not held true for any of these 5 teams. It’s too easy to blame

With Anders Lee back the Isles are looking up at only 6 teams for the best odds to win the cup this year. A championship is well within reach. Across town, or actually over a bridge, (59th street still doesn't charge a toll, hint, hint) the Rangers are a young, exciting team of their own.

But the Kansas City Chiefs bear a special look at from a fantasy football perspective because of what looks like a crisis of confidence from Pat Mahomes.

The loss to Tom Brady in the Super Bowl did see Mahomes outshone in a game that had been his just the year prior. At 3rd place in the AFC West and with a 3-4 record and the Las Vegas Raiders leading the division at 5-2 it is easy to not panic. It would be easy to point to the controversy over Jon Gruden this season and his abrupt firing and call the division wide open.

But the Chiefs problems run a little deeper than some see as the problem.

Some would argue that Hardman’s speed is not properly exploited in their offensive game plan, but it is still a nightmare matchup to go against them. Mahomes still fetches an $8,400 price tag on Fan Duel games this week, with Kyler Murray fetching $8,500 and Josh Allen fetching $8,800. All of that looks right to me. He is only $100 more expensive than Tom Brady this week. I see the upside in going against the Giants this week as compared to Brady’s matchup with New Orleans. I still very much like Mahomes’ chances and I am not deterred by the near concussion the week prior. If the Chiefs fail to make the playoffs it will be the ordinary speed they have on defense, and that unit’s lackluster performance which will be to blame. Pat Mahomes will still deliver his share of 400 yard pushing days the rest of the way here in 2021.

Heavy Weather Skippering

ON THE SEA

As the temperatures continue to drop, we need to focus now on skippering in heavy weather – because it is coming. This column is about that.

on the back of my helm seat. Across the back, where the crew can read it, it says, “If you see the captain put this on, try to find one for yourself.”

Heavy Water

Take Waves at an angle – Those waves that you are trying to muscle through pack tremendous power within them. Did you know that 1 out of every 20 boats that sink at sea does so when the hull comes apart under the force of pounding seas? If that statistic was adjusted for heavy weather sinkings, it would go up dramatically, I’m sure. Cross the waves at a 45-degree angle and “tack” across the storm like a sail boat moving to windward. And slow down! Your 20 knots and 5 knots of wave speed multiply the force of the pounding. Slow down and the forces.

Why is heavy weather more dangerous as we move into the Fall?

Well, putting hurricanes aside which are in their own class, heavy weather in the colder months has its own set of challenges. First, hypothermia is but a small slip away. Second, as the water chills, it gets denser per cubic foot.

Denser means more “oomph” behind those chops. Third, it gets darker sooner. What used to be an all daylight trip out to a favorite fishing spot is now a return under the cover of night.

Believe me, once one thing goes wrong, the chances of something else going wrong before you can focus on and fix the first problem just went up. Now you have a spiraling and accelerating danger curve on your hands. So, what to do if caught in heavy weather…?

Put Your Life Jackets On – Right away, the skipper has to direct everyone to don their life jackets. On my vessel, I have a heavy weather/type-1 life jacket

Don’t Be Bashful – If things start to get dicey, get on the radio and call the USCG. Tell them where you are, where you are heading and why you are concerned about the situation.

Most likely, the watch stander will take that information and ask you to check in with him or her every 15 minutes.

Don’t be late in checking in or you may find a red-and-white helicopter hovering over you. But if you are in

outboard engine with a transom cutout, your “free board” is only that little distance between the water line and the lowest part of that cut-out. Probably 6”10”. If you have a following sea and one of those growlers catches up with you, he will swamp you from astern. Stay ahead and he can’t…

Alcohol Abuse in Veterans

BY REV. FREDERICK MILLER. PH.D. There are currently 2.2 million active duty service members and 23.4 million veterans throughout the United States. Many veterans and active duty service members are facing physical and emotional challenges that put them at risk for developing drug or alcohol problems. Alcohol is the top of the list of substances abused by veterans. According to the National Institute of Drug Abuse, military service members drink alcohol at higher rates than civilians. Veterans who suffer from alcoholism may have begun abusing alcohol while still in active duty as a way to cope with problems like stress, isolation, or homesickness.

In 2008, almost half of active

duty service members reported binge drinking alcohol. Service members who had experienced more combat exposure reported binge drinking at a greater rate. Reports show established rituals around drinking and that alcohol use was a common coping mechanism in the service. Binge drinking after work and during deployment has shown to be a cultural tradition by service members.

Many of those suffering from an alcoholic abuse problem suffer from a co-occurring disorder that also needs help.

One of the common reasons the service members and veterans turn to the use of alcohol, is for self-medication for distressing thoughts or feelings that

arise from having PTSD or depression or the experience of a stressful life event. Many are afraid to seek medical help for fear of being labeled with a mental disorder. Unfortunately,

the term Post Traumatic Stress Disorder uses the term “Disorder” which is the cause of that fear.

Alcohol is not the solution for any problem the service member or veteran has. In fact, the feeling they are trying to get away from may come back even stronger. When alcohol enters the body, it lowers the serotonin and norepinephrine levels. Serotonin is a chemical that affects mood, appetite, sleep and memory. Norepinephrine is a stress hormone that controls how the body reacts to different situations and events. Low levels of both have been linked to depression.

In veterans who suffer from mental health conditions, excessive drinking

can make the situation seem worse than they are. This can lead to an increase risk of selfharm or suicide.

In addition, excessive alcohol use can cause a number of problems in many areas of life, such as, a negative affecting relationship with families and friends. In many cases alcohol abuse has lead to a divorce resulting in the veteran becoming homeless and suicidal.

If you have a drinking problem the Veteran Hospital can help solve the problem and also help if the drinking problem is the result of a co-occurring they can help with treating both. They can keep you treatment records safe on federal hospital records only.

They are solely concerned with manifestation of pure grace within Creation, and concentrate their energies upon God. They do not interact with humankind in the direct way that Archangels and other angels do.

Thrones are the last order of this upper echelon. Their primary purpose is to serve as the bearers of the throne of God, but they

also serve as the first line of many angelic realms who concern themselves with celestial law

and justice. Thrones are known to be humble creatures, allowing them to maintain their objectivity and neutrality when dispensing justice. Thrones are basically intangible orbs or wheels covered in reflective eyes and glowing with a magnificent glowing of shimmering, iridescent light.

This is how they were described when they served as God’s chariot, Merkabah, when He came down to Earth in the Book of Isaiah: “The four wheels had rims and they had spokes, and their rims were full of eyes roundabout.” The Thrones are often referred to as “the manyeyed ones,” and it is known that no act in Heaven or on Earth can escape their view. They exist in a transitional state between the physical and celestial worlds, which is why their countenance seems so odd compared to the rest of the Heavenly Host.
