Citizens Revolt Against Tyranny and Government Overreach

Bristling against Gov. Cuomo’s new restrictions on local businesses and forbidding more than 10 people at Thanksgiving celebrations due to COVID virus concerns, hundreds of citizens and elected officials turned out Saturday for a Freedom Rally in Hauppauge.

“Cuomo’s Gotta Go” was the theme as protestors railed against the “tyranny and overreach” of the governor with local business owners looking to stave off bankruptcy due to a new round of shutdown rules and citizens wanting government out of their lives.

“Governor Cuomo’s New York has the highest death rate per million residents in the nation,” said Jennifer Harrison, a victim’s rights advocate, at the weekend event.

“He forced a directive for nursing homes to accept COVID positive patients knowing they did not have the proper equipment and staff killing 11,000 people who fought for and built this country, including my Step Grandmother and her sister. And now we should abide by his tyrannical rule as if he has our best interest at heart?”

Also speaking at the rally, which was promoted by the Suffolk County PBA, was Assemblyman

Joe DeStefano, who said Cuomo’s new closure rules could be the “final nail in the coffin” for businesses owners trying to stay alive. “We have reached the point where the supposed cure is worse than the disease and we are suffering the consequences of an overreaching government making decisions based not on science, but politics,” DeStefano said. “What’s the difference between a restaurant closing at 10 p.m. or midnight? Or a gym closing two hours later? Will the virus go on recess or is this just a case of the governor showing off his power and trying to make himself look decisive?”

Holding signs that said “Arrest Killer Cuomo” and “Cuomo Killed My Parents,” the protestors said the last straw was the governor’s book praising himself for his virus response and his order limiting people to having no more than 10 people in their homes for Thanksgiving.

Suffolk businessman David Zere, who hosts the show Breaking Point on America’s Voice News, stated, “We don’t live in a communist country, yet. All of the Blue State governors are acting like fascist dictators. These people have zero credibility and should be ignored.

I have not seen in my life such a vindictive, angry, mean-spirited person as Governor Cuomo with his contempt for business owners and their families. It’s truly despicable.”

Shirley Man Indicted for Allegedly Killing Woman, Injuring Three Children in DWI Motor Vehicle Crash

Suffolk County District Attorney Timothy D. Sini today announced the indictment of a Shirley man for allegedly driving while intoxicated and killing a woman and injuring her three children in a motor vehicle crash.

Chris D. Montpetit, 36, is charged with two counts of Aggravated Vehicular Homicide, a B felony; Manslaughter in the Second Degree, a C felony; four counts of Aggravated Vehicular Assault, a C felony; Vehicular Manslaughter in the Second Degree, a D felony; three counts of Assault in the Second Degree, a D felony; and three counts of Vehicular Assault in the Second Degree, an E felony. He is also charged with Aggravated DWI, two counts of DWI, and Reckless Driving, which are all unclassified misdemeanors.

“Driving drunk is completely inexcusable, especially in this day and age where you can hail a ride home with the push of a button,” District Attorney Sini said. “Three young girls are now without a mother because of the reckless, senseless actions of this defendant.

We will do everything in our power to hold him accountable and to seek justice in this case.”

At approximately 5:06 p.m. on Sept. 25, Montpetit was driving a 2018 Jeep Cherokee northbound on County Route 83 in Farmingville when he struck the rear of a 2015 Honda Civic, which had become disabled in the right lane and had its hazard lights engaged.

The occupants of the Honda, Erika Bautista, 31, of Farmingville, and her three daughters were

transported to Stony Brook University Hospital for treatment of serious physical injuries.

Erika Bautista succumbed to her injuries on Oct. 11.

Following the crash, Montpetit was arrested by Suffolk County Police officers and transported to the Sixth Precinct, where he refused to submit to a chemical test of his blood.

The District Attorney’s Office secured a warrant for a chemical test of Montpetit’s blood that revealed a blood alcohol content of 0.28 percent.

Montpetit was arraigned on the indictment today in front of Suffolk County Supreme Court Justice William Condon and posted bond in the amount of $500,000 He is due back in court on Jan. 6, 2021,

If convicted of the top count, Montpetit faces a maximum sentence of eight and one-third to 25 years in prison.

Legislator Sunderman Establishes Task Force to Address Zombie Home Crisis The Suffolk County Legislature recently approved legislation sponsored by Legislator Rudy Sunderman to take an in-depth look at the zombie home crisis and develop a strategy to counteract this problem. Introductory Resolution 1693-2020, establishing a Task Force to address the Zombie Home Crisis in Suffolk County, was approved unanimously at the legislature’s November 16 meeting.

Over the past 15 years, the number of zombie homes in Suffolk County has increased exponentially due to the financial crisis of 2008 and Hurricanes Irene and Sandy in 2011 and 2012. These zombie properties are a burden on the town and county, leading to increased costs associated with repair or remediation, and can bring down the property values of other homes in the surrounding area. Zombie

Legislator Sunderman’s resolution, which received bipartisan co-sponsorship by 10 other legislators, establishes a task force to be composed of 25 members including Suffolk County department heads, representatives from the 10 townships within Suffolk, representatives from the banking industry, realtors, veterans service agencies, and many more.

The task force will meet regularly to discuss this issue and will hold two public hearings to allow residents an opportunity to offer their input and ideas.

This task force will be charged with examining and evaluating the zombie home crisis in Suffolk County, identifying communities with large proportions of zombie homes, and developing recommendations and strategies to reduce the number of zombie homes, promote homeownership, and increase community revitalization.

Recommendations may include changes to state, county, or local laws and policies to decrease the number of zombie homes in Suffolk County. At the conclusion, the task force will issue a written report containing its findings and recommendations. The report shall also contain recommendations on how Suffolk County can increase community revitalization efforts and promote homeownership in areas that have been blighted by the zombie home crisis.

“This task force is the first step in working to resolve the zombie home crisis in Suffolk County,” said Legislator Sunderman. “If we can make a positive impact that helps to benefit communities struggling with zombie homes, we can help to improve the overall quality of life for everyone in Suffolk County.”

Long Island Community Hospital Heroes Week Long Island Community Hospital recently celebrated Heroes Week recognizing all of their healthcare heroes who stood strong against COVID-19, for the protection of our community.

As part of the week-long celebration, gift bags including a commemorative medal and a long sleeve T-Shirt were distributed to the entire staff. The shirts were emblazoned with an original “Courageous Hearts” design, created especially for the hospital by a local designer.

The original graphic depicts two caped heroes facing the challenges of the pandemic with purpose, commitment and care. Both were proudly worn by the staff throughout the hospital on Friday in a display of unity and team spirit.

Local Country Singer Honors our Veterans Amanda Lee is shown performing the National Anthem at a Veterans Day Ceremony held earlier this month at Calverton National Cemetery.

BY KARL GROSSMAN It would be the biggest offshore wind farm in New York State— more than 100 wind turbines starting 30 miles east of Montauk Point. It’s being called Sunrise Wind.

A “cable bundle” containing two electric cables would be buried under the seabed and extend west from the turbines for 100 miles making landfall in the parking lot at Smith Point County Park in Shirley, and buried underground there. The cabling would then run for 17 miles, all underground, along William Floyd Parkway and, remaining underground, along other roads including Mastic Boulevard, Montauk Highway, Yaphank Avenue and Horseblock Road and then the Long Island Expressway, running to the Long Island Power Authority substation just north of the LIE in Holtsville.

Sunrise Wind would generate 880 megawatts of electricity and feed into the Long Island electric grid at Holtsville. The 880 megawatts would provide for 500,000 homes, nearly half of

LIPA’s 1.1 million customer base.

A “virtual open house” was held on the project last week.

Presentations were made and questions were answered by representatives of the owners of the Sunrise Wind project, Denmarkbased Orsted, the world’s largest developer of offshore wind farms, and Eversource, a product of a merger of New England utility companies that included Northeast Utilities.

Orsted, since acquiring Deepwater Wind, owns the Block Island Wind Farm, consisting of five turbines off Block Island—the first U.S. offshore wind farm, that went operational in 2016. Orsted and Eversource together own the proposed South Fork Wind Farm which is to have 15 wind turbines placed also in the Atlantic east of Montauk Point.

The number of wind turbines in the Sunrise Wind project would depend on the size of the turbines used. If eight megawatt turbines— common in new offshore wind farms—are used, the total would

BY REV. FREDERICK MILLER. PH.D. We can all agree that it is very hard to break a habit. It can be more difficult to change a lifestyle.

One of the difficult problems is returning back to civilian life when discharged from military service.

To understand the problem and learn how to change it we need to review the whole process of entering to service, our duties in the service and our return to civilian life. Vietnam veterans may have been drafted or enlisted in the service. Those entering after 1973 all enlisted from civilian life.

In that civilian life we were free in many ways. We could skip a day’s work or school, or be late or quit either one. No one tells us what to wear.

When we entered the service all that freedom ended and we were faced with a big change of lifestyle.

When we arrived at the basic

training base we were greeted by a non-commissioned officer who is assigned to train us for our period of basic training. The military provides structure and has a clear chain of command. In the military, things are not only provided, but there is little choice. You eat at determined times and in a certain place. What you wear is inspected to insure it is worn properly to the extent that the buttons are all closed. You do not leave until the mission is complete. If you miss a day or quit in the service you could end up in jail. This change of lifestyle was easier going into it because you were not alone, there were twenty of more personnel starting and going through this transformation with you.

Then after living this different lifestyle for two or more years we are discharged from the military

In the online “virtual open house,” representatives said the Sunrise Wind project would be a “catalyst” for clean energy.” Here are some of the other points made by the representatives: It would be a key to the “transition to clean energy” in New York State and the goal of Governor Andrew Cuomo and the state to have “100 percent clean energy by 2040.”

The turbines would be “barely visible” from any shore. There would be “no harmful emissions” and Sunrise Wind would “displace 2.1 million metric tons of carbon pollution” every year. The “cost to the average ratepayer” on Long Island would be “less than $1 per

month” extra on her or his electric bill. “Construction work could begin as early as 2023”—after all necessary permits are obtained— and completed in 2024. There’d be a “host community benefit agreement” through which Orsted and Eversource would provide funds. Suffolk County Community College would become the “training center in Suffolk County” for offshore wind technology. It would be the “academic arm of the initiative.” Port Jefferson would become a “hub” for activities.

Workers on the Sunrise Wind project would live in two-week shifts on a “service operational vessel.”

Orsted “brings unparalleled expertise” to the project with its 26 “successful offshore wind farms” and “1,500 turbines worldwide.”

Cables would be buried “the entire length of the route.” All the “construction areas” would be “fully restored.” There would be “minimal environmental impact.”

Orsted and Eversource welcome “stakeholder suggestions.”

As to why the South Fork Wind Farm and the Sunrise Wind project would have different landing points, the explanation was that the South Fork project would be sending DC electricity to Long Island and Sunrise sending AC. Also, there would be a difference in the voltage sent.

Offshore wind farms are able to harvest more wind power than onshore wind projects, said the representatives. Wind isn’t blocked and turbines can be larger, it was explained.

They said Sunrise Wind would be a “game-changer,” the “first of many” similar “large-scale” U.S. offshore wind projects. Also, offshore wind is an excellent “complement” to the other major source of clean electricity—solar power.

Perfection Can Pay Off

BY TOM BARTON The Pittsburgh Steeler and New York Jets still have a zero next to their records. Perfection is still in reach for both teams, even if one team doesn’t want that perfection.

The Steelers cruised to another win against the Jaguars to bring their record to 10-0 while the Jets were torched by rookie Justin Herbert and the Chargers to go 0-10. I’m not sure anyone saw this sort of production or futility coming, but if you did it might pay off huge.

The odds for a team to go 16-0 or 0-16 in the pre season both had more than a 10 to 1 payoff. After week 4 when the Jets played the Chiefs the odds were Kansas City, and not Pittsburgh would go 16-0

and were at 11 to 1 odds. The Jets were already down to just 10 to 1 with people buying into how terrible they could be. As we stare ahead to week 12 of the season the new odds for the Steelers are down to 8 to 1 to go 16-0 but in an interesting twist the odds to win the Super Bowl, thus going 19-0, are at a massive 16 to 1 odds.

Then again wouldn’t it be just like the Jets to pull out a win somewhere and lose the #1 overall pick?

Happy Trails While Trailering – Part I

Now that the season has wound down, we must start thinking about getting the boat home and up on the hard. Back in March, we wrote about commissioning (making ready) the boat for the summer months.

And you may recall that we started with making sure that the trailer was capable of safely transporting your boat from the driveway to the boat ramp. This column expands considerably on that. Since this is a topic that can take up lots of space just due to safety precautions, this is part I of a two-part series.

Stresses from over-the-road travel can be more punishing than normal operation. A boat is designed to sit in water, along her waterline. While the manufacturer may even put some markings along the waterline that say “trailer strap goes here”, nothing “extra” is there – it is simply a mathematical recommendation about the weight displacement of the boat. And that is before you added all that gear. So, trailering is, by its nature, more stressful on the boat than riding at anchor.

Safety First!

So, start with making sure that what the boat sits on isn’t adding to the stress. You don’t want your rollers or bunkers stressing, scratching or gouging the hull. Make sure that the tie-downs (and engine support) do not permit the boat to bounce on the trailer. How can you be sure?

Well, you aren’t going to be able to lift the boat up to see – too heavy by far. Unfortunately, the only way to be sure is by testing. Have someone follow you over a course and watch the boat. Speed limit only! If any air shows, stop and adjust the straps.

I had an uncle that drove his boat pretty hard – WOT (Wide Open Throttle) and dead-stop are his two favorite speeds. As you might expect, the boat wore out around him from stress and strain. When he used to complain to me about it, I said, “If you constantly drove your brand-new car at full speed over a bumpy road, would you be surprised that it might start to shake loose?” He said, “hmm.”

Well, that started me thinking about trailering - when you are driving your boat over many types of road (how about those winter-created

marks or apply some tell-tales so you can consistently have the boat sit snuggly on her trailer.

Neither is going to be good for you…

But first - be sure she is sitting properly in the first place! What does that mean? No more than 7%10% of the total weight of the boat should be on the trailer “tongue” – the part that attaches the ball and coupler together. This means that a 3,000 pound boat, including engine, cooler, etc, can have no more than 210lbs to 300lbs on the tongue. Well, how do you tell that!? You’ll need a couple of bathroom scales and a strong friend.

Each of you stand on the scale(s) while lifting the tongue together.

Note the combined weight. Step off, weigh yourselves and subtract… if that comes to more than 300 lbs, the boat is too far forward. If it is less than that, it is too far aft. Why is that important? Well, too much weight at the back (too light at the front), will tend to pry your car’s rear tires up. Less traction than designed by the manufacturer! Too much weight on the tongue (too heavy at the front), will tend to pry your car’s front tires up. Less steering control than designed by the manufacturer!

The tow ball and coupler must be the same size, exactly. The boat may be properly secured to the trailer, but the trailer has to be properly secured to your car or you may see her pass you on the highway.

The safety chains are attached and crisscrossed under the coupler to the frame of the tow vehicle. If the ball and coupler were to break apart, the trailer would fall into the chains, which now are a safety net.

Underway, Making Way

Now you’re ready to go. Before going too far, be sure that the lights on the trailer function properly.

Remember, each time you come up

Check tires (including spare) and wheel bearings for proper inflation – and remember that the trailer tires are likely to be far smaller than the car or truck tires. This means that they will be spinning faster just to stay in place. Faster equals more stress on the bearings. And don’t forget that the aft-most set of tires have been in salt water at least twice a day when you go boating!

Well, that will get you thinking.

Community Medicaid and Where You Can Get it

I need to get long term care for my mother who is currently residing in her apartment. I want to apply for Medicaid, but I am concerned we will need to move her in the future. What happens if she moves in with me or to an assisted living facility? Does she lose her Medicaid benefits?

C om mu n it y Medicaid, also known as homecare Medicaid, is not limited to care in one’s current home.

A person is eligible for Community Medicaid so long as they reside in New York, do not require a skilled nursing facility, and meet the financial eligibility requirements.

your mother meets the eligibility requirements, she can apply for Medicaid in the county where she resides. Should your mother move in with you in the future, you will want to put Medicaid on notice that her address has changed and provide them with supporting documentation, such as a letter from you stating she now resides with you.

An applicant applying for Community Medicaid can have up to $15,750 in their name, own their primary residence with an equity value of less than $898,000 (if single), and continue to maintain all tax deferred retirement accounts so long as they are in payout status.

Any additional assets must be transferred out of the applicant’s name, either to a spouse, third party, or asset protection trust. So long as

Instead, she must notify the original county of her change in residency and provide them with any substantial changes in circumstance that may affect eligibility. The county must continue coverage through the month following notice.

After that, the new county will pick up coverage. It is up to the counties to settle any disputes as they relate

to the fiscal responsibility of the care, without having to involve the recipient. However, if the current home care agency does not operate in the new county, you will need to choose a new one that services that area.

Assisted living facilities, unlike nursing home facilities, still fall within the guidelines of Community Medicaid. In most assisted living facilities, your mother will be responsible for the cost of room and board, but she can receive personal long-term care paid for by Medicaid.

The county in which she previously resided is the county that will cover the cost of her care, even if the facility is in a different county. There are also Medicaid Assisted Living Programs, which provide housing and long-term care services covered

by Medicaid to those who would otherwise qualify for a nursing home, but whose needs can be met in a less restrictive manner.

It is important to note that we are currently in a transition period where the transfer of assets to qualify one for Medicaid services could create a penalty period during which Medicaid will not cover the cost of care. New York has implemented a 2.5-year lookback for all transfers made on or after October 1, 2020. The change is set to go into effect April 1, 2021. This means that an individual applying for Medicaid post-April 1, 2021, will have to submit 30 months’ worth of financial statements for eligibility purposes. To the extent there are uncompensated transfers or gifting that occurred on or after October 1, 2021, the applicant will

be penalized and cannot be enrolled in homecare Medicaid during the penalty period. The hope, however, is that those needing Medicaid before April 1, 2021, will still be able to apply for homecare Medicaid without being subject to a lookback. Transfers to spouses are considered exempt transfers and are not subject to the lookback period.

Due to the complex nature of Medicaid and the current transition period, it is important to seek an Elder Law attorney with the expertise to help guide you through the system and get your mother the care that she needs. Moreover, because of the change in law, you should consult an attorney as soon as possible if you are contemplating Medicaid planning.

BY ROBERT CHARTUK The Great American Smoke Out started this month and I am begging everyone to kick the habit. My sister started in her teens and is horribly addicted. She is dying and needs a lung transplant. She’s tethered to an oxygen tank and can barely walk from her bed to a chair. After 50 years of smoking, my mother quit during the smoke out 35 years ago and would have been long gone if she didn’t like her two sisters who died from it.

Even though she quit, the smoking caught up to my mother and she’s on oxygen too.

It is harrowing to watch someone dying from cigarettes. You feel helpless and hate the fact that the suffering was self-inflicted. The drug is so powerful that even though you know it’s going to kill you, the addiction continues and many people take it to the bitter end.

The good news is you don’t have to go it alone. Join the great smoke out and resolve yourself to quit.

My mother threw her last pack out halfway through and stopped cold turkey while my sister tried many times but couldn’t do it until it was too late.

The American Cancer Society has a website dedicated to help you at www.cancer.org. If you’re a smoker, go there as you first step toward breathing free. For the people you know and love who need help quitting, be part of their cure.

According to the cancer society, the positive effects of quitting start almost immediately. In 20 minutes, your heart rate and blood pressure drop and after a few days, the carbon monoxide level in your body drops to normal. In about a month, your circulation improves and your lung

November is National Smoke Out Month so pick a day now. Make

a strong, personal commitment to quit on your day. Let others know of your plan so they can support and encourage you. There are many tools to help you quit including nicotine replacement therapy (gum, the patch), prescription drugs, and counseling. At the end of the day however, it boils down to your own willpower and a promise to yourself that you will never smoke again.

I have surfer friends who smoke which seems insane to me. After having a beautiful day at the beach doing a healthy activity where you actually need good lung power and then intentionally breathe in toxic chemicals that you know can kill you just seems so bizarre. Sure, maybe you’ll live to a hundred, but I doubt it if you keep smoking. This I can promise: Your last years won’t be pretty. I realize the power of addiction and have seen its stranglehold on people that I love, so I make this plea: My friends and dear readers, fight back with everything you have. Get nicotine out of your life once and for all. Fight like your life depends on it, because it does.

Consistent with the modified plan for service, the annual user fee will increase each year for a total of five years, and for a one family home will increase to $228 in fiscal year 2023, and $345 in fiscal year 2024. The funds collected through the user fee will be used for the expenses necessary for the continual operation and maintenance costs of the Sewer District’s facilities.

The total cost to the typical property located within the Sewer District, including both the amount assessed on an ad valorem basis and the user charge, for fiscal year 2022, is estimated to be $207 for a one family home.

Brainfuse Adult Learning Center provides information on preparing your resume. Once you have completed your rough draft, you can upload it and have it critiqued. The next step would be to discuss it with an instructor.



Career Cruising covers the following resume categories: Content and Presentation, Major Sections, Effective Bullet Points, Types of Resumes, Proofreading, Electronic Resumes, and Sample Resumes.



Choices Planner for Adults features a resume template. Complete the appropriate headings and you will have a formatted resume.


