Suffolk County Clerk Judith A. Pascale has issued the following document safety tips for this hurricane season.

“The devastation wrought by recent hurricane seasons serves as a strong reminder that hurricane preparedness needs to be pushed to the forefront of everyone’s agenda. Experts agree that storing key documents in safe locations provides the maximum level of security and convenience in the aftermath of a catastrophe like a major hurricane,” commented Suffolk County Clerk Judith A. Pascale.

Safety deposit boxes, which are available for rent from many banks, can provide piece of mind. For on-site home storage, consider a fireproof lockable box. Storing key documents in a compact location will allow instant access to the basic information one needs to begin recovering from a disaster.

These boxes can be purchased from household goods and office supply stores in a variety of sizes.

“While safes and safety deposit boxes are among the best places to store your most sensitive documents, I want to assure all Suffolk County residents that a permanent copy of all documents recorded in our Office, i.e. deeds, mortgages, powers of attorney, etc., are readily available, should an unfortunate disaster strike,” commented Pascale.

By digitally scanning and retaining land records, digital surrogates are utilized in place of the actual hard copies to preserve land transactions while also providing for an efficient and effective safeguard of the land records of Suffolk County.

“Although traditional paper mediums are increasingly susceptible to disaster, we utilize state-of-the-art computer storage systems to hold digital images of these paper mediums to provide an added layer of security in the protection of the public record,” concluded Pascale.

Chamber Election Rigged

In a campaign that resembled the election of a dictatorship in a third world country, Beth Wahl was re-elected to another one year term as President of the Chamber of Commerce of the Mastics and Shirley on Monday, November 8, 2021.

After ten plus years as President of the Chamber of Commerce, Wahl, a non-business owner was finally challenged by local business owner, Joseph Funari, the owner of a large local cleaning company.

Mr. Funari is a longtime chamber member and currently serves as the chamber’s Sgt. at Arms. He was nominated from the floor last month to challenge Wahl.

Funari, who is currently a Trustee at the Mastics-Moriches-Shirley Community Library, and a member of the Knights of Columbus was selected by Wahl last year as the “2020 Chamber Member of the Year.”

“At first everything was fine. Joe was nominated and received a lot of positive comments from old and new chamber members who were looking for change,” said Fred Towle, who is the representative of The South Shore

“Then all hell broke loose. From Friday, November 5, 2021 to Sunday November 8, 2021, Wahl and her gang of puppets registered 38 plus new members electronically to the chamber.”

A total of 84 members voted in the election on November 8th. The list is included below.

“38 of these business owners included friends and family members of Wahl, Vice President Tony Liberti, Efrain Santos, Frank Montanez Jr. and former Mastic Beach Village Mayor Maura Spery,” Towle pointed out.

“These people should not have been allowed to vote. They never attended a single chamber meeting; most of these people never attended a chamber event; these people haven’t been chamber members for more than 72 hours and they were deciding who was going to run our group.

This isn’t right. This is how she was able to hijack the election and the Presidency,” noted Ken Olivo, who represents the Knights of Columbus.

The most common documents recorded in the Clerk’s Office are deeds, mortgages, satisfactions and assignments of mortgage, which are routinely recorded.

There may be some very rare instances, however, when a document may be recorded in error. This new service will send an email notification to enrolled participants when any new documents are recorded.

“Whenever a homeowner participating in this program refinances their mortgage, pays off their mortgage, or adds a family member to the deed to their home, this service will send them an email alerting them to the new recording.

Just as important, in the event a document is unexpectedly recorded against the property, the homeowner

can contact my office to investigate,” said Pascale.

Suffolk homeowners can join the Homeowners Watch List Program by visiting the Suffolk County Clerk’s website at Suffolkcountyny. gov/clerk. Interested homeowners must pre-register on-line. A letter will then be mailed to the physical address of the property to allow us to verify ownership. The letter will contain a unique PIN number, which is required to register in the program.

All subsequent notifications will be sent via e-mail. Therefore, a valid e-mail address is required.

“I’m pleased to offer this service to Suffolk’s property owners by providing greater access and transparency into the records filed in the Suffolk County Clerk’s Office.

Our homes are typically our largest material asset. This program is yet another way for Suffolk’s property owners to receive updates and notifications to protect these assets,” concluded Pascale.

Kevin Meyer Appointed to William Floyd School Board Will Fill Vacancy by Robert Vecchio

By Barbara LaMonica The William Floyd Board of Education has appointed Mr. Kevin Meyer to the school board to fill the seat of President Robert Vecchio, who has accepted the position as Nassau-Suffolk School Boards Association's next executive director. Meyer's appointment to the William Floyd Board will become effective on January 1, 2022.

Meyer was selected after the board conducted a series of interviews of interested members of the William Floyd School community. He will serve until the next school board election on May 17th, 2022.

Meyer, who received the second highest number of votes in the May 2021 elections, will have to run for election to fill the balance of Vecchio's term, which expires

June 30th, 2024. Other school board trustees whose terms are up for re-election in May 2022 include April Coppola, Robert Guerriero and Lorraine Mentz.

In a prepared statement provided by the school district, Meyer commented, "As a member of the Board of Education, it will be my goal to work with the administration and my fellow Board members in continuing to provide opportunities for our students while maintaining affordability for our residents." Meyer added, "Our students have the opportunity to be a part of an amazing school community, and I look forward to supporting these opportunities for all of our students for years to come."

Retired from the FDNY as a firefighter with Engine 320 in Queens, Meyer previously

served as a middle school teacher in the Eastport South Manor School District, and taught science and math at Robert H.

Locally, Meyer has as an extensive resume of community involvement closer to home in such capacities as coach for

Meyer earned his associates degree in liberal arts from Suffolk County Community College, a bachelor of science in professional and liberal studies with a minor in elementary education, and earned a masters of science in special education from Dowling College. He received his school building leader and school district leader certifications from the College of St. Rose.

Meyer is a 19-year resident of Mastic Beach, Meyer and his wife, Amy, an alumna of William Floyd High School, have eight children, six of whom attend William Floyd Schools.

SBAA is an eclectic organization the gives its members an opportunity to cultivate and display their art. Recently the association celebrated its 65th Anniversary. On November 11th, 1956 a group of artists joined together to create an art group in Bellport Long Island to advance the appreciation of the arts. Since then the group has grown to become a prestigious organization that provides opportunities for artists.

On November 7th South Bay Arts association hosted a pot luck dinner at the Knights of Columbus Hall in Patchogue. The theme as 1950’s attire and members looked fabulous. Highlights of 2021 coming out of the pandemic was a productive year with monthly membership exhibitions at the Cheese Patch on Main Street in Patchogue and many other events throughout the year.

Long Island Abate’s St Mary’s Run 2021 It was a cold morning on November 7th, there was frost on the ground as we prepared for our Annual Food and Fund Raiser Ride for St Mary’s Church in Hampton Bays. We arrived at the Riverhead Elks Lodge as the temperature started to rise, we began setting up for the event. Slowly the parking lot began to fill. Attendance was low due to the low temperature. As the temperature rose the bikes slowly rolled in. It wasn’t looking promising for a large attendance. As the time passed and the temperature continued to rise the parking lot filled and before you knew it the lot was almost full with over 200 Motorcycles and Riders who came to give to the cause be it food or cash donations.

I would like to thank Riverhead Town Supervisor Yvette Aguiar, who stopped by to show support. Before we saddled up, we said the Pledge of Allegiance and Pastor Gerry said a prayer for us.

At 11am we left the Elks Lodge and headed to St Mary’s Church with an escort provided by the Suffolk County Sheriff's department. The run went smooth.

We arrived at the church and they greeted us with open arms and welcome signs. The church provided food and beverages for all. After all was said and done, we raised over $6500 in funds and food. For that I would like to thank the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Department for the great job they did keeping us safe and everyone who came out, helped and attended this event to make it happen.

William Floyd Colonials Advance to Suffolk County Championship Game

The Nancy Kerrigan Foundation has raised significant funds for the vision impaired in honor of her legally blind mother and she has been recognized for her excellence on and off the ice (US Figure Skating Hall of Fame, Mother’s Day Foundation Mother of the Year, New England Sports Hall of Fame, Fight for Sight Lifetime Achievement).

Most recently, Kerrigan has focused on her family (three children age 13, 16 and 24) and her choreography

(Halloween on Ice, Skate Niagara, Bryant Park Holiday Show), while also appearing on Dancing With the Stars in Season 24. Nancy is currently executive producing the upcoming documentary “Why Don’t You Lose 5 lbs” which will examine the silent epidemic of eating disorders in sports and was on the Advisory Board for the Aurora Games which is an international platform for women in sports and entertainment. Bonner Celebrates Unveiling of Horseshoe Crab Mural at Rocketship Park in Rocky Point

The three-time defending Suffolk County champion William Floyd Colonials are headed back to the county title game! On Saturday afternoon, before the wild weather hit, the No. 2 Colonials defeated No. 3 Commack 31-16 to set up a showdown with No. 1 Walt Whitman at Stony Brook University’s Kenneth P. LaValle Stadium on Friday, November 19 at 7 pm. This game is a rematch from last season’s 28-21 thrilling overtime victory for the Colonials, which secured them their third consecutive county title and 13th overall.

The formula for William Floyd on Saturday was straightforward and effective – run the football. Star running back Dylan Harris added to his great season with 128 rushing yards and three touchdowns on 18 carries.

Dual-threat quarterback LaDuke Harris also had 120 rushing yards and a touchdown. Sonny Mayo added 41 yards on the ground.

Recently, Councilwoman Jane Bonner was on-hand for the unveiling of the “Horseshoe Crab” mural painted on the handball court wall at Robert Miner/Rocketship Park in Rocky Point. The large-sized artwork was created by Rocky Point resident Steven Soltysik. The Rocky Point Rotary Club donated the funds to provide the artist with paint and materials needed to complete the mural. Rocketship Park is located on

Hallock Landing Road, just north of Mark Drive in Rocky Point.

Councilwoman Bonner said, “This mural is a beautiful piece of art and a great addition to Rocketship Park.

Horseshoe crabs are a very familiar sight on our north shore beaches, so it is a fitting subject for the handball wall mural. I thank the Rocky Point Rotary Club for sponsoring the mural and Steven Soltysik for sharing his artwork with the community.”

Longtime William Floyd School Board Trustee and President, Robert Vecchio, is assuming the duties of deputy executive director of NassauSuffolk School Boards Association, (N-SSBA). Vecchio will retire from school board service in the William Floyd School District on December 31, 2021. He was elected by the community to serve on the board of education for six election cycles for a total of 18 consecutive years, the last 15 years of which he was elected by the board to serve as its president. Vecchio, who was appointed to his new position at the June 18, 2021 meeting of the Executive Committee of the NassauSuffolk School Boards Association, will take the helm of Association as its executive director on June 30, 2022 where his educational duties and responsibilities will broaden in their representation. "A truly unique opportunity has been presented to me to become the next executive director of the Nassau-Suffolk School Boards Association," Vecchio said.

"So while I am leaving the William Floyd Board of Education," he noted, "I will now be representing William Floyd and more than 100 other school districts in advocating for educational policy both on a federal and state level, while also being a resource and support for board trustees across Long Island."

In a recent letter to the William Floyd school community, Vecchio acknowledged the residents for their confidence in electing him to continue serving on the school board for 18 years. He also addressed the

inequities that continue to plague William Floyd and educational communities across Long Island. "I have always been proud to represent the William Floyd community and fight for our kids," Vecchio said, "whether it be the battle against unfunded mandates, the erosion of local control and decisionmaking, and the fight to ensure our community and students get the funding that is deserved."

When discussing highlighting his extensive resume of school board service, however, Vecchio was quick to deflect the accolades and volley the spotlight back onto the William Floyd school community. During

Between 2007 and 2021, the high school graduation rate increased from 67% to 91%. From a fiscal standpoint, William Floyd experienced increases in bond ratings by Moody's Investor Services, indicative of financial stability.

In addition to the District's "topnotch and firstclass" career and technical education program, which has prepared increasing numbers of students for college and career paths, Vecchio cited William Floyd's "competitive" athletic teams and exemplary academic initiatives. "Our business academy has been cited numerous times as the best in the state, our Youth and Government program has had a dynasty of domination for as long as I have been on the Board, and our mock trial teams continue to achieve great things," Vecchio stated. "Our elementary schools are the foundations of systematic success that our student achievement is built upon and play a vital role in getting to where we are now with a 91% graduation rate," he pointed out, adding that the District's two middle schools increased standards by bringing in high school Regents courses to all eighth grade students, and more effectively preparing sixth through eighth grade students for high school. Vecchio also cited implementation of the Floyd Academy and William Floyd Learning Center as initiatives that have been instrumental in ensuring no student "falls between the cracks."

Students enrolled in these programs, Vecchio said, "are succeeding and doing so in their home district with

their peers." Vecchio attributes the District's successes, by and large, to a supportive community and team of employees. "None of this would be possible without the entire team at William Floyd," Vecchio said, citing superintendents of schools with whom he has served, District and building administrators, faculty, and the entire support staff, as well as school board members with whom he has worked alongside. While Vecchio wholeheartedly acknowledges a supportive community and District staff with the District's scholastic and athletic successes, he noted his family's "shared sacrifices" which gave him the ability to serve the William Floyd school community, for which he thanked his wife, daughter and son-in-law, and son and daughter-in-law.

Vecchio will succeed Lorraine Deller as Executive Director of N-SSBA. The Association cites Vecchio's "long-term financial background" coupled with his "school board experience," as characteristics that make him "a very solid choice for his role with N-SSBA." The Association's immediate Past President John Verdone said, "Bob Vecchio's in-depth knowledge of state financing, and a keen ability to breakdown legislative items either on a federal or state level will serve our association well for many years."

LIPA Hearings Monday on a "Solar Tax"

BY KARL GROSSMAN The Long Island Power Authority will hold public hearings this coming Monday, November 29th, on what is being called a “solar tax” by solar power advocates.

LIPA is following up on a plan by the New York State Public Service Commission (PSC) to require solar energy customers to pay what the PSC has named a “Customer Benefit Contribution.” LIPA says in a “Customer Benefit Contribution Fact Sheet” it has posted online that “LIPA’s staff supports the PSC’s approach and has proposed to adopt the new CBC in our service territory.”

LIPA adds: “Customers with preexisting onsite [solar] generation will be unaffected by the new charge.”

But those who install solar panels after the start of the new year would face a new monthly charge estimated at between $5 and $10 a month depending on the size of their solar installations.

Governmental leaders in challenging the proposed “solar tax” is State Assemblyman Fred W. Thiele, Jr. of Sag Harbor and State Senator James Gaughran of Northport.

However, Newsday reporter Mark Harrington has just disclosed: “New York State is offering special funding to help solar-power customers offset a new fee on home rooftop installations come Jan. 1, but Long Islanders need not apply.

That’s because the special ‘transition’ program will be available only to upstate solar customers, according to a recent letter from the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority, which administers state green-energy funding.”

The “solar tax” would be “bad policy” and “not in long-term interest of Long Island combating climate change,” he says, and is another reason why “we need greater accountability and transparency of LIPA.” It is a move “to raise a little money without regard to the long-term consequences.”

The Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act was enacted in 2019 and, as New York State government says on its website, “is among the most ambitious climate laws in the world and requires New York to reduce economy-wide greenhouse gas emissions 40 percent by 2030 and no less than 85 percent by 2050 from 1990 levels.” It says “these targets…place New York on a path toward carbon neutrality.”

On its website, LIPA says the two hearings on November 29 will be held in the form of Zoom meetings because of COVID-19. The first is to begin at 10 a.m. and the second at 6 p.m.

LIPA it “is taking steps to minimize the risk of exposure for the public and our employees….Members of the public are encouraged to observe the live stream of the meetings. The meetings will also be recorded and posted to LIPA’s website for later viewing. Members of the public should register…to comment virtually.”

Mr. Thiele says “I think LIPA will run into heavy seas if it proceeds” with the solar surcharge. Already, he says, there’s movement in the State Legislature—led in the State Senate by Senator Gaughran—to “rescind the tax” if it is implemented.

BY TOM BARTON This past week Noah Syndergaard decided he did not want to be a New York Met, and the Mets fans took to social media, and sports talk radio to express their outrage. But, should they be upset? Or relieved?

Thor was a cultural icon. His long flowing hair and dominant fastball captivated the Amazin' faithful for a few years, but let's be honest that fizzled out fast. The idea of Syndergaard is much more impressive and iconic than the actual on the field production. So again the question must be asked: is this a blessing in disguise? Noah Syndergaard turned down the Mets qualifying offer and left for less than 3 million dollars more when he decided to leave for the Angels. That speaks to a man who didn't like the organization, more than someone chasing the money. In fact,

he didn't even come back to one of the richest owners in the sport to match his offer, instead he was on his merry way to La La Land. This could speak to the uncertainty of the Mets organization who were without a GM at the time, and still remain without a manager, but likely it's because he wanted a fresh start.

Mets fans will blame management but this is a player who has massive flaws. Syndergaard has had just 6 big league seasons and will be 30 years old this baseball year. He has exactly 2 innings pitched in his last 2 years and even going back to 2019 his 4.28 ERA isn't impressing anyone. On top of that you almost have to throw away 2017 when he pitched just 30 innings. So Noah Syndergaard has a reputation that reads like this... an often injured

The time honored tradition of watching NFL football over your Thanksgiving dinner is well worn.

Many of our fantasy football leagues have wrapped up their trading deadlines the weekend prior and the Thursday games get us an early start into what is Week 12 of the NFL season. I have to be honest though, I find baseball much more interesting at the moment due to the threat of a labor work stoppage and some very interesting free agent activity which is taking on some urgency prior to December 2nd.

As I wrote about in a previous column, the Collective Bargaining Agreement in baseball expires on December 1st. Negotiations on a new CBA never seriously unfolded. The owners are certain to lock out the players on December 2nd to pressure the players to negotiate a new CBA. This has moved up the deadline for a number of players to get deals signed before the industry goes into a deep freeze. In my humble opinion, these are the players who have compromised bargaining positions that are looking to lock up their money prior to going into a deep freeze winter. The top echelon free agents will get their

It's easy to understand the fandom with keeping Thor in the Big Apple, but it also has to be acknowledged that this money certainly could be spent elsewhere, and more wisely. Mets fans are used to disappointment in the offseason, losing Thor can either be another addition to that history, or this can be an opportunity to spend more wisely, and not roll the dice because the player has a fun nickname and flowing hair. In the end the New York Mets might be a better baseball team with this subtraction. The sportsbooks agree because before he went to the west coast the odds of the Mets winning the World Series were 20 to 1.

Talking Baseball Over This Thanksgiving If he is a comparable talent to Ronald Acuna Jr. there is no way he would EVER be #6 on someone’s scouting report. For validation, I reviewed who the #1 player was on their scouting report. It was Seattle outfielder Julio Rodriguez who was playing this summer for the Dominican Republic Olympic team/ Rodriguez is ranked by Baseball America as the #2 prospect in all of baseball. So now we have some valid reference points with which to assess Suzuki. Not ranked as highly as a player who is the #2 prospect in all of MLB baseball. I am paying attention to the A.J. Pollock comp much more closely.

And there is one special situation which is in need of critical resolution and it involves all of us in fantasy baseball. Japanese outfielder Seiya Suzuki of the Hiroshima Carp is a 27 year old outfielder who is getting some rather lofty write-ups and scouting reports. He is interested in testing himself in Major League Baseball.

He has asked his Hiroshima team to post him as a free agent in MLB. The rules are quite complex, but the basic premise is a simple. His team will get a percentage of whatever contract he can negotiate with a major league team.

But December 2nd is right around the corner, so this is tight. If the Hiroshima team posts him during Thanksgiving week, major league teams need to rush out and sign him to a quick deal.

If his agents are willing to do that, a number of MLB teams might open up the checkbook. I expect this to happen.

The signing of a Japanese free agent does not cost a team draft pick compensation in any form. This is just a purely financial transaction. And the scouting is critical here. Suzuki

was a key star in Japan’s Gold Glove at the summer Olympics in 2021. I don’t believe any of the hype that he is a comparable talent to Ronald Acuna Jr. After all, Acuna is a proven 40 base stealer and has 40 home run power.

More realistic comparisons to an in his prime A.J. Pollock or Ryan Braun may be more accurate. But those were 30 stolen base players, and I can’t find a scouting report that even puts his speed in 20 stolen base territory. We either

have some bored local sports writers or a serious disconnect here. I will always distrust local sports writers. I went back further to the folks at Baseball America who wrote a scouting report on Suzuki just prior to this summer’s Olympic games.

Baseball America wrote an article about the Top 10 Prospects to look for in this summer’s Olympics. Seiya Suzuki was ranked as the #6 prospect to watch this summer. Now that is interesting.

In a draft from scratch fantasy baseball league, I would handicap this is a 4th through 6th round draft pick.

Give that an ADP from 50-75 and that could even be aggressive. For a dynasty league where 20 players are protected however? This could be a 1st round draft pick. Who could be a suitor for him in MLB baseball? I am reading that Texas is interested. But the Yankees or Mets would not be a shock to me at all.

It is kind of crazy to be writing about a Japanese free agent baseball player during Thanksgiving week but a storm is coming.

Rescue, Recovery and Re-warm The Maritime 3 R's

When we were kids, it was all about readin’, ritin’ and ‘rithmatic. On the sea, especially in cold water environments, it is all about rescue, recovery and rewarming. I don’t expect that there are many boaters out there on our bays, creeks and littoral areas of the ocean now. But some are out there. And the waters are cold now and will still be cold once April 1 comes around and the moorings go back in. This column is about that.

But, upon further research conducted by cold-water specialists in Canada (where the water is cold all the time, when it isn’t frozen), exertion – such as thrashing or swimming – can increase that heat-stealing mechanism up to 10x – that’s 250x now!

He Fell In And Can’t Get OutRescue

When Rescue Become Recovery

We’ve written about the new NYS law that requires PFDs on all boaters in boats under 21’ between November 1 and May 1 of the following year and about hypothermia. When I wrote about hypothermia, I suggested that you conduct a little experiment with the kids (or yourself!) to demonstrate the power of water to draw heat out of you - 25x faster than air of the same temperature. To prove it, try this experiment with the kids… get a glass of water to room temperature and drop an ice cube in it; at the same time, lay an ice cube on a napkin next to the glass of water. When the ice cube in the glass

So, if someone falls in, it is critical to get them out ASAP.

By USCG standards, a rescue becomes a recovery when the victim has died from the circumstances. So, if someone just falls in, it is still a rescue, right? Well, hopefully, but there are circumstances when death can come almost unbelievably quickly. As has been pointed out here before, cold water – sudden cold water – can be a killer long before hypothermia gets to you: 1. A splash of cold water in your face can cause you to involuntarily inhale water, which is a killer. Not swallowing it down your throat into your stomach but inhaling it into your lungs. This is

the “gasp reflex.”

2. In some people, the reaction doesn’t get that far into their bodies.

They hit the cold water and, as soon as it touches the back of their throat, it closes up. The spasm stops the water from getting into the body, which is the biological intent, but it also stops air from getting to the lungs. The person bobs back to the surface (their lungs are full of air) and they suffocate in the open water, unable to breathe due to a blocked air passageway. This is what is now called “dry drowning.” There is no water in the lungs. Nor is there any oxygen. I’ve seen a BoatUS report that stated that 15-20% of all drowning are “dry drownings.”

3. When the difference between your body temperature and the water temperature is greater than 30-degrees, the chance of a heart attack from the sudden immersion goes up dramatically.

4. Even something as simple as a racing heart from shock and fear can create hyperventilating on the part of the victim. Dizziness followed by unconsciousness results as the ratio of

oxygen/carbon dioxide changes in the victim’s blood system.

If you are the victim, remember this: an initial deep and sudden gasp followed by hyperventilation that can be as much as 600-1000% greater than normal breathing can be deadly. You must keep your airway clear or run the risk of drowning. Cold Shock will pass in about 1 minute. During that time concentrate on avoiding panic and getting control of your breathing.

Wearing a lifejacket during this phase is critically important to keep you afloat and breathing.

OK- We Have Them In the Boat – Now What? – Re-Warm!

Believe it or not, if you apply heat directly to the arms and legs of a hypothermic person you just pulled from the sea, you can kill them. It is called the “After Drop” – you force cold blood that has pooled in the arms and legs (constricted blood vessels) back toward the heart and brain and that lowers their body temperature. Apply heat (hot water bottle, towels that have been microwaved, heating pads, your warm, dry hands) to the head,

neck, chest and groin. Of course, you need to get them into a warm or at least dry environment as part of the rescue. Lie them on their back or side (not face down.) This person is dying so there is no time to be squeamish or bashful. Lie on top of them and wrap a blanket around you both. There are two schools of thought on getting them out of the wet clothes. Some believe that the little bit of water than you can warm with your body can aid in their recovery. My own experiences lead me to believe that, if the alternative is wet clothes or just a blanket around a naked body, go with the wet clothes and cover them up with blankets and your warm body. If they are conscious, give them warm – not hot – liquids. Add sugar for energy. No alcohol and avoid caffeine if possible.

Bring ‘em back alive, captain.

The Effectiveness of a Life Estate in Medicaid Planning

Q: How does a life estate affect my Medicaid eligibility?

A:

For New Yorkers receiving benefits under the long term care Medicaid program, a life estate is a strategic estate planning tool. Maintaining a life estate can ensure that your home passes to your intended loved ones after your death. A life estate is created through a properly drafted and recorded deed or using an Irrevocable Medicaid Asset Protection Trust. A life estate legally transfers the title of the real property or assets to a designated party. But, the original party retains the absolute and exclusive right to live in the house for the rest of their life and must pay related expenses.

Individuals receiving Medicaid long term care benefits are subject to

estate recovery for all assets passing through their probate estate. When anyone passes away with assets in their sole name, a proceeding is commenced in Surrogate’s Court.

If the decedent received Medicaid long term care, Medicaid may seek to recover money that it paid.

The recovery program allows the State to claim any assets in the Medicaid recipient’s estate, including their house. This means that certain assets are not passed to the Medicaid recipient’s loved ones after death.

With a life estate created in a deed or trust, Medicaid does not have a claim against your estate for monies that it paid for services rendered. The property avoids probate, as it is no longer an estate

asset that passes through the court.

In this scenario, Medicaid will have to seek reimbursement from other probate estate assets or recover nothing at all.

Although, using a life estate

deed to transfer real property is a cost-effective estate planning tool, a trust is the better solution. For one, the real estate may not be the only asset that needs protecting. If a deed with a life estate needed to

be transferred back to the original owner, the designated party may refuse. Additionally, the property could be subject to the designated party’s creditors or divorcing spouses. Contrast that with a transfer to an irrevocable trust, the Grantor would be able to change the trustee and beneficiaries at any time. Another benefit is that if the property is sold during the Grantor’s lifetime, the Grantor would retain the capital gains exemption of $250,000.00. Discuss the advantages and drawbacks of a life estate with an experienced estate planning attorney. A consultation is critical before undertaking any course of action.

“There’s no such thing as bad weather, only bad clothing”. This famous Scandinavian saying has influenced millions of families to take early childhood learning outside and has become the mission statement of the growing outdoor education movement. The Community Library is getting in on the fun with Messy Meetups; an all-weather child-led program for the Pre-K set and their caregivers.

Local residents out walking dogs in Southhaven park must be very curious about the gathering of energetic, muddy toddlers who appear every Wednesday morning.

If they venture too close, they are likely to be splattered with mud, paint or bubbles. Activities vary but each week includes a tub of dirt and a collection of child-size pots, pans, scoops, bowls and shovels for making mud pies and dirt cupcakes. Playing with dinosaurs at the base of an oak tree is a mustdo, and popping giant bubbles as quickly as they appear never gets

boring for children or their adults.

A nature-based art option is offered each week; favorite projects include rock painting and working with mud paint. Tree faces created with homemade playdough and assorted natural materials are always a big hit. The program is “child-led”, meaning that materials and activities are presented and the children decide how and when to participate. Caregivers are encouraged to follow the child’s interests. Sometimes that means dinosaurs end up in the bubble buckets, and that’s just fine.

Library Assistant Cathy Meinhold was inspired to start the program after learning about the trend toward outdoor messy play while caring for her granddaughter.

“I discovered mud kitchens and Forest Preschools, and I wanted to give families a way to test the ideas for themselves, I’m excited to help our families connect in a new way, outdoors.” The importance of children spending unstructured,

Today’s parents recognize the need to go back to the basics and back to nature. The Forest School outdoor education approach reflects that rediscovered philosophy.

Johnny Panessa and his son Easton, 3, of Mastic, have been attending Messy Meetups regularly since last Spring. “He absolutely looks forward to Wednesdays,” Panessa said. “he’s been immersed in every activity totally, I think getting them in touch with nature a bit and finding the creativity in nature, that’s been great.”

Children’s and Parent’s Services Department head Sylvia Maurer is excited about the new outdoor and off-site programming her staff

is creating. “These programs give opportunities to the families in our community to do things that maybe push them out of their comfort zone, in a fun way. They also expose families to the parks and resources we have right here that they may not be familiar with.”

BY REV. FREDERICK MILLER. PH.D. The Department of Veterans Affairs history starts with America’s wars, as their original and primary purpose is the care of the wounded soldiers. In 1776 the Continental Congress encouraged enlistments during the American Revolutionary War by providing pensions for soldiers who were disabled. The actual care of the wounded soldiers was provided by the individual states and communities of the soldiers. The first federal medical facility for veterans was authorized by the federal government in 1811, but not opened until 1834. In the 19th century, the nation’s veteran assistance program was expanded to include benefits and pensions not only for the veterans, but also their widows and dependents.

The United States military casualties of wars are: Revolutionary War (est. 8000), Civil War (218,222),

World War I (53,402), World War II (291,567), Korean War (33,686), Vietnam War (47,424), Iraq War (3,836) War in Afghanistan (1,833).

The Department of Veterans Affairs Act of 1988 changed the former Veterans Administration, an independent government agency established in 1930, into a Cabinetlevel Department of Veterans Affairs. It was signed into law

by President Ronald Reagan on October 25, 1988, however came into effect under the term of George H.W. Bush, on 15 Mach 1989. In 1973 the Veterans Administration assumed major responsibility of the National Cemetery System (except
