ELECTION 2021 An Exclusive interview with Jesse Garcia the Chairman of the Suffolk County and Brookhaven Town GOP

Republicans in Suffolk and Nassau counties, and in several races across the country, swept seats in resounding numbers during last week's Election 2021 cycle. Some say the colossal red wave may be a foreboding, or forecasting of the November 2022 midterms, where the GOP could, conceivably, recapture the majority in the House of Representatives.

In Suffolk County alone, the tables were turned in numerous races, including the top seat where, in the hotlycontested race for District Attorney, challenger Raymond Tierney, appearing on the Republican and Conservative lines, ousted one-term Democrat incumbent Timothy D. Sini. But election night played host to one surprise after another, where this year's team of Republican candidates won enough seats to take back not only the majority, but the supermajority in the Suffolk Legislature.

Suffolk GOP and Brookhaven Town Leader, Jesse Garcia, spoke candidly about the 2021 election cycles results. "We're

GOP Sweeps Elections 2021 very proud and humbled that the voters of Suffolk County elected our first Republican District Attorney in 20 years, and ending a 16-year run of Democrat control," Garcia told The South Shore Press in an interview after the election.

"We now truly have a balance of power in the Legislature," Garcia added, referencing the 12-6 supermajority that the Republicans now claim.

Among other election night surprises, Republican Dominick Thorne beat Suffolk County Presiding Officer, Rob Calarco, who was seeking his final term as 7th District Legislator, due to term limits.

This was Thorne's second time up at bat against Calarco after being defeated in the 2019 election. In yet another turn of events, 27-year-old Brendan Sweeney, a Citizen's Advocate for the Town of Brookhaven, defeated Democrat Sarah Anker, who was also vying for her swan song term.

"What this will do is create more transparency in government, protect the citizens in partnership with professional prosecutor we have in Ray Tierney, and ensure our Main Streets, small businesses, and communities have the tools and infrastructure they

will need to thrive, " Garcia said. And while election results raised many eyebrows, Garcia had a different take: "This election was not a surprise to us. We knew we could be very competitive." Garcia said using the DA's race as the "umbrella" for strategic campaigning, committee people or volunteers would campaign in their area for GOP candidates seeking county and town seats. "We did this throughout the County," Garcia said, adding, "We knocked off three Democrat incumbents and captured Democrat seats in LD 18 (which was under Democrat occupation for the past 22 years), and we haven't held the 7th LD since 1975. So," Garcia said, "we have five fresh, new faces."

In forecasting Washington 2022 elections, Garcia commented, "There have been waves and cycles every few years, you prepare and position your campaigns to ride any wave to victory, whether a big wave, a small wave, or a tsunami. But this year was a credit to the voters who put their trust in Republican values, and this came to fruition on election night," Garcia said.

“This was a great way to allow our young men to say thank you to the adults who really inspired them along their journey,” said Assistant Coach Kai Watkins. “It was also a way for the staff to be recognized for some of the outstanding work they have done throughout the years that made a lasting impression.”

Every other Wednesday, members of Bellport High School’s new Multicultural Student Association are volunteering their time to tutor fellow students.

“This is an opportunity for students to see students of color serving as mentors and tutors,” said club adviser Kai Watkins.

In addition to offering tutoring services, the Multicultural Student Association aims to provide a voice to minority students while offering inspiration for the future. Each month, club members meet with former Bellport graduates to learn more about the career paths they selected. The group also participates in student council meetings and plans to visit and learn more about historically Black colleges and universities.

All students are welcome to attend the tutoring sessions, which assist with Algebra I and ELA 9 — two subjects that Watkins said more students have requested help with.

Ray Tierney Wins Suffolk's DA Race

After a long and winding contentious campaign trail in the race for Suffolk County District Attorney, challenger Raymond Tierney won the race over one term Democrat incumbent Timothy D. Sini. Results on election night had Tierney up by a commanding lead of 133,141 to 99,976. While Tierney is an independent candidate, saying throughout his campaign that he has no ties or is beholden to any one political party, he ran on the Republican and Conservative lines of the ballot.

District Attorney-elect Tierney talked about a number of issues, including some of the changes he will be bringing to the office of the District Attorney under his leadership, and why he won his first run for elective office. "Generally, there was dissatisfaction in the leadership on local, state and national levels, as well as an unresponsiveness to concerns of the electorate, especially in law enforcement," Tierney said. "There was

dissatisfaction with bail reform," Tierney continued, "and the DA's office failed to act on numerous incidents that unfortunately resulted in consequences." The "consequences" Tierney was

When 27-year-old Shoreham resident, Brendan Sweeney, tossed his hat into the ring for Suffolk's 6th Legislative District he was challenging long-time Democrat incumbent Sarah Anker.

Many considered him a longshot, while others said he had a good shot at capturing the seat if Republicans could get voters to return to their line. When all was said and done after voters made their voices heard on November 2, Sweeney came out on top at the polls and is the District's new Legislator-elect. Sweeney, who works as a Citizen's Advocate for Brookhaven Town Supervisor Ed Romaine.

Sweeney, who ran and was elected on the Republican line will take over as the new Legislator on January 1, 2022.

Sweeney spoke candidly during an interview with The South Shore Press last week about what he thinks earned him the greater number of votes, and what he has mapped out for his inaugural term as Suffolk Legislator. "I may be on the younger side, but I started in this business out the gate in college, and as somebody who's been in the business a couple of years, I do have knowledge of the issues," Sweeney said.

Sweeney Sets New Legislative Priorities It was "a couple of factors" which Sweeney says attributed to his election night victory. "Term limits in my area was very much a factor, as was bail reform changes, and I stand with and support law enforcement, " Sweeney said.

High on Sweeney's agenda of priorities include closing the loophole to term limits. "I'm also going to meet with departments and union leaders to make departments more efficient, and so we have their support," Sweeney said, "because while they're public servants, they're Suffolk residents too." Sweeney said he's going to work with Republican colleagues to undo certain fee increases, specifically red light cameras, home alarm, and the mortgage taxes." Sweeney said he will work to support law enforcement and give them the tools they need.

From a fiscal perspective, Sweeney commented, "The county executive's budget has so much patronage, and I'd like to see some of that money redirected so we can increase the number of 911 dispatchers where they're needed," Sweeney said.

Asked about how he's going to establish constituent service, Sweeney explained : "The first thing I want to do is make sure will have at least one person who

had experience with County Legislative experience. I worked in Brookhaven Town and in the State Senate, and when I leave Brookhaven Town, I'm bringing my phone list with me," Sweeney continued. "When a constituent calls my office, I won't transfer that person; instead, I'll call the person I know who can help that constituent."

Sweeney said he's looking to relocate his District Office so every resident in the 6th LD has easy access to his office. "Right now the District office is located in Mount Sinai," Sweeney said, "and I don't know what the terms of the existing lease is yet, but wherever my office is, it will be

Commenting on the election, Sweeney gave a nod to his predecessor. "I do thank the Legislator, (Anker), for her years of service," Sweeney said. "We both ran our campaigns based primarily on issues. I may have done certain things differently, but I do give her kudos, and now," Sweeney pointed out, "it's time for the baton to be passed.

county, and sometimes town property taxes based on the type of service they rendered to their country in wartime.

Additionally, a DD-214 is required and must be submitted for other programs including Social Security benefits, Veterans Administration services, Civil Service testing, and replacement medals. The Green Amendment Passes

BY KARL GROSSMAN For Suffolk County (and New York State) among the most important things that happened on Election Day last week was passage of the Green Amendment.

That was Proposal Two on the ballot.

“The proposed amendment to Article 1 of the New York State Constitution would establish the right of each person to clean air and water and a healthful environment,” it said. “Shall the proposed amendment be approved?”

The key nationally for a Green Amendment in all state constitutions and ultimately in the U.S. Constitution is Maya K. van Rossum, the Delaware Riverkeeper for 27 years and author of the important 2017 book, “The Green Amendment, Securing Our Right to a Healthy Environment.”

In Suffolk, the “yes” votes constituted 60% of votes. It received a similar percentage statewide. Thus, after as required by the State Constitution—being passed twice by the State Assembly and the State Senate and approved in a statewide vote—the Green Amendment has become law in New York.

It makes “clean air and water and a healthful environment” Constitutional rights in the state—enabling litigation on Constitutional grounds if they are negatively impacted or threatened.

Assemblyman Steven Englebright of Setauket, chair of the Assembly’s Environmental Conservation Committee and long involved in environmental issues in Suffolk, was the prime sponsor of the Green Amendment in the Assembly.

The Jets had a good week, and even that was cut down to just days, because they had to play on Thursday night in Indianapolis. That game was a nightmare. There were some bettors sweating out the Jets feverish comeback late, but let's be realistic, that game was never in doubt.

After that game the Gang Green faithful had 10 days to sit and think about their season. Could it have been different on Thursday if the new savior Mike White was in there? What if Wilson isn't the

guy? Maybe this coach isn't all he's cracked up to be. Jets fans ... just relax, as the guy who wears a different green jersey once said.

The New York Jets in 2021 were always going to be bad. They were the 3rd to last team the day after the Super Bowl at 120 to 1 odds.

On opening day they were 140 to 1 odds to win it all. They were dead last according to the betting number to win the AFC East, and had the 4th best odds to get the #1 overall pick in April. Nothing has changed. Nothing.

The Derrick Henry injury is devastating for those players of fantasy football who were enjoying his dominant season, and it is likely now over after foot surgery this week. Henry had rumbled to 937 rushing yards in just 8 games before his injury this past week. And there is still a chance he finishes as a Top 10 rusher for the season. A running back by committee approach almost seems certain to be employed by the Titans. Or will it? RB – Jeremy McNichols to me looks like he has a legit opportunity to become the new starting RB1 in Tennessee now. You can’t look at his low usage in 2021 thus far and infer anything from it. He was on the bench behind the best running back in football. And if you think 36 year old Adrian Peterson is credible competition, I am not in agreement with you.

The Titans matchup with the LA Rams in Week 9 is a tall order for any running back, but looking past that matchup, there is a lot to like about McNichols. A 5th round draft pick in 2017 out of Boise State where he ran for 20+ touchdowns in his last 2 seasons in college. If your league allows waiver picks this late in the season, go out and

What you wanted to see was growth of Wilson and some young players develop. Ty Johnson, Carter, and some of the defense look good and improving. The news broke mid- week that Michael Thomas suffered a setback in his return from ankle surgery. Initially projected to miss 7 or 8 weeks of the 2021 season, Thomas will now sit the entire season. Many owners took a flyer on Thomas knowing full well he couldn’t give you a full season worth of production, but the silver lining was always that a fresh pair of legs could be a real shot in the arm for his team down the stretch. Those dreams are now shelved. Many times we can’t help ourselves when we bite on these reclamation projects. Thomas was being taken late in many draft formats so the cost of this high risk/high reward strategy was reasonable.

The news that Aaron Rodgers tested positive during Week 9 also caught many of us off-guard and serves as a stark reminder that the pandemic is still very much a reality. An awful number of Americans still contract COVID on a daily basis in America.

Compounding matters, Rodgers was considered unvaccinated by the NFL, and as such must miss a minimum of 10 days and remain asymptomatic.

People who play DFS on a weekly basis have the ability to select a team defense every week. The $500 or so premium to select the Buffalo Bills team defense is not prohibitive and it doesn’t surprise me when I see people select it in contest after contest. Buffalo allows on average 30 less yards of offense each and every week than the next best defense in the NFL. The next best you ask? The Carolina Panthers.

One of the most improved units over the last 3 years has been the Arizona Cardinals and at an average of 319 yards allowed per game, this team is playoff

bound and the defense is a huge reason why. For a few less dollars, the Arizona team defense is a wise selection.

I had a conversation with a peer who plays Fantasy Baseball in some different formats than me. I asked him how late was it that the teams in his league drafted 1B Frank Schwindel.

I got back a question mark instead.

Who the heck is Frank Schwindel?

Well, I should have known more about Schwindel as an alumnus of St. John’s University. Frank’s story is an inspiring one of never giving up on your dreams.

In 841 minor league games Frank hit for a lifetime .285 batting average.

He had a more than respectable .798 OPS mark. But what he did this summer for the Cubs was amazing.

He hit for a .342 batting average this summer. His on base % was .389 and his slugging percentage was .613.

Heck, his OPS was also in excess of 1.00, a gold plated standard. And nobody really knows who this guy is.

In my mixed league he was added as a waiver pick on September 6th, Labor Day Monday. In my NL-only league he was added on August 10th. He will be drafted in fantasy baseball drafts this next spring. Heck, in my dynasty league someone may even protect him.

Veteran’s Day

BY REV. FREDERICK MILLER. PH.D. In 1921, an unknown World War I American soldier was buried in Arlington National Cemetery. This site became the focal point of reverence for America’s veterans. Similar ceremonies occurred earlier in England and France, where an unknown soldier was buried in each nation’s highest place of honor.

These memorial gestures all took place on November 11, giving universal recognition to the celebration ending World War 1 fighting at 11 a.m., November 11, 1918. The day became known as “Armistice Day.” Actually the war ended June 28, 1919, but the fighting ceased seven months earlier when an armistice, or temporary cessation of hostilities, between the allied nations and Germany went into effect.

In November 1919, President Wilson proclaimed November 11 as the fist commemoration of Armistice Day with the following words: “To us in America, the reflections of Armistice Day will be filled with solemn pride in the heroism of those who died in the

BY DOMINICK FORTE Angels of the Cosmos: Dominions, Virtues, and Powers The Angels of the Cosmos are concerned with maintaining an orderly unification between the spiritual and corporeal universe.

This is the second house of angels in the hierarchy of the nine choirs and consists of the Dominions, the Virtues, and the Powers. Their calling compels them to pass frequently between the spiritual and the corporeal planes of existence.

The Dominions comprise the top tier of the Angels of the Cosmos. Their primary purpose is to maintain the lines of communication between the spiritual and material worlds so that when the Divine Will comes down from the Creator it is clearly and quickly spread through the entire universe. The Dominions are the fourth level in the hierarchal choir and like the Thrones, the third level, they exist in a state of flux between

the two planes of existence and assist in the integration between the heavens and the rest of the universe by maintaining order and balance. They also serve to regulate the duties of the angels below them in the hierarchy.

The Powers are guardians of peace, order, and harmony. They act as celestial enforcers as they maintain God’s order upon Creation. It is known that they keep count of the births and deaths of God’s followers throughout history.

They are the gatherers of truth and keepers of fact and they hold within themselves all the historical knowledge of the world.

One distinguishing trait of the Dominions is that they usually carry a large orb or a massive scepter as a symbol of their authority. These artifacts continually emanate a holy radiance of greens and golds and create a distinct aura around them.

Next are the Virtues whose primary job is to convey the unending supply of spiritual energy from the heavens to the material world where it can be disseminated into the collective human consciousness. These beings of light and grace are charged with the bestowing of heavenly miracles and holy blessings upon the world and its population. The Virtues are most often associated with heroes and those who strive for good and

seek courage in their darkest times.

Biblical lore tells us that Virtues ministered to Jesus during His agony in the garden on the eve of His execution and were present at His Ascension into Heaven after

But, from a personal experience, I had a neighbor’s boat break off its mooring during a nearly monthlong nor’easter we had back in October of 2005 and it set down on my very well maintained 25’ Chris Craft launch. She sank in seconds on her mooring. It took 4 days for the storm to abate enough for my commercial tower to be able to raise her. Q: How much is an executor paid?

A:

An executor is the individual appointed to administer someone’s Last Will and Testament. An executor of a New York estate is not expected to administer a decedent’s estate for free.

Executors receive a set commission, paid out of the estate. Commissions are calculated as a percentage of the value of the "probate estate," less any specific legacies, bequests, and devises. The probate estate is all property held in the decedent's sole name at the time of death. Thus, the probate estate does not include jointly held accounts or real property with rights of survivorship. Likewise, any account naming a beneficiary is paid directly to the beneficiary and not to the estate. This usually means pension plans, life insurance, transfer on death

If the probate estate is more than $300,000, three executors receive full commissions. If there are more than three executors, they must split three full commissions according to the services rendered.

Total: $34,000 If the estate has multiple executors, they may each receive a commission depending on the size of the estate.

If the probate estate is less than

$100,000, the commissions must be split between the executors according to the services rendered by them.

Properly administering an estate and serving as an executor can be complicated. An executor has a fiduciary duty and may face legal liability if they squander assets or don't act in the best interest of the estate. If designated as an executor, you should discuss your duties and commission with an experienced estates attorney.

Compulsive Gamblers

The compulsive gambler can be a well-dressed stockbroker, a blue-collar worker, a minister, a businessperson, or a senior citizen.

And of course, the compulsive gambler can be a female. There are approximately six million pathological or problem gamblers in the US. Compulsive gambling is not a bad habit. It is an emotional illness recognized by the American Psychiatric Association.

Some common characteristics exist among compulsive gamblers.

Male gamblers tend to be competitive, athletic, intelligent, and energetic.

They learned at an early age to avoid adult responsibilities, frustration, and conflict. Most of them say they cannot tolerate boredom and continually crave excitement. Some experts believe this craving for excitement an inborn biological need that may contribute to the development of the illness.

Female compulsive gamblers are typically single, separated, or divorced. Many women reluctantly begin to gamble when invited by well-meaning friends or family for a trip to a gambling venue. Unlike male gamblers, who often get their first high with a big win, many women gamblers never experience the big win. They enjoy the escape – the dissociative state gambling puts them in. in this trans-like state, women are able to forget about overwhelming problems, including grief, abusive relationships, loneliness, and boredom.

The compulsive gambler who hits bottom is typically male, white, married, and in his forties. He is in debt for approximately a year’s salary.

When he hits rock-bottom, he is fifteen times more likely to commit suicide than the general population.

• Most partners see themselves as over-responsible caretakers and feel like martyrs.

RESEARCH SUPPORTED FACTS

• Anyone who gambles compulsively will find they are chronically and progressively unable to resist their impulses to gamble, despite the fact that gambling damages their personal, family,

marital, or vocational pursuits.

• Compulsive gambling can never be cure. It can only be arrested.

• Many compulsive gamblers believe that lack of money is their problem, and the solution is gambling.

• In order to recover, total abstinence is absolutely necessary.

• Action and/or escape is what gambling is all about. It’s like taking a stimulator, or tranquilizer, or a

The loss of a friend is hard. The loss of a friend with whom you have shared a lifetime of memories is even harder. My friend, Matt Gioia, was such a friend. I have known Matt for my whole life and his passing has left a huge void not only in my heart but certainly in the community that he loved and served tirelessly. On October 8, 2021, Matthew Gioia, left this world to take his place in Heaven. A sad day not only for his family and friends but the community he so loved.

For thirty-nine years Matt dedicated his life to the Suffolk County Department of Health until his retirement in 2003. Until his illness would no longer permit him to work, he had worked as a consultant for Stony Brook University and did independent consulting.

Matt Gioia was a true giver. He was a member of the Mastic Beach Fire Department and served with distinction for fifty-one years, was a past Chief, a member of the Exempt Firemen’s Organization, was a member of the Mastic Beach Yacht Club for seventeen years and held the office of Commodore. He was a member of St. Jude’s Council Knights of Columbus and a Little League Coach. He was a devout member of

It is impossible to speak about Matt and not mention Gerri his wife in the same breath. They were married for fifty-one years having met when he was twenty-one and she was nineteen. He was a loving and devoted husband. Gerri told me that he would never fight with her. If they argued, he would leave the room and say “I love you.”

He was the quintessential family man who was loving and compassionate. Shortly after Gerri’s father died Matt invited her mother to come live with them and that lasted from 1978 to her passing in 2001. Matt also took in her brother and he lived with them for ten years. In the middle of all this came the greatest gift of all, their beautiful daughter Jamie. Matt was very involved with her all during her life and when she married Paul, he finally got the son he never had. When his grandchildren Alex and Emily were born, he was the happiest man on earth.

Matt was the adoring brother of Angela (Charles) Torregrossa, brother-in-law to Helen (Frank) DeVito and the best uncle to Frank, James, John, Christopher, Cathy, and Angela.

Matt loved visiting his family vacation home in Gouldsboro, Pennsylvania and soon became the captain for their section of the

MATTHEW GIOIA, 73, of Mastic Beach, lost his long battle with his illness and passed away on October 8, 2021. He was born in Brooklyn and served as Senior Health Sanitarian for the Suffolk County Department of Health for thirty-nine years until his retirement. He was a fifty-two-year member of the Mastic Beach Fire Department, Ex-Chief; a seventeen-year member of the Mastic Beach Yacht Club; member of St. Jude’s Knights of Columbus Council; member of the Exempt Firemen’s Organization and Little League Coach. He was the devoted husband to Geraldine, loving father to Jamie (Paul) and adored grandfather to Alex and Emily, brother of Angela (Charles) Torregrossa and brother-in-law to Helen (Frank) DeVito and cherished uncle to Frank, James, John, Christopher, Cathy, and Angela. Family and friends were received at Roma Funeral Home in Shirley. A Mass was offered at St. Jude’s RC Church in Mastic Beach and interment took place at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, Coram.
