“While safes and safety deposit boxes are among the best places to store your most sensitive documents, I want to assure all Suffolk County residents that a permanent copy of all documents recorded in our Office, i.e. deeds, mortgages, powers of attorney, etc., are readily available, should an unfortunate disaster strike,” commented Pascale. By digitally scanning and retaining land records, digital surrogates are utilized in place of the actual hard copies to preserve land transactions while also providing for an efficient and effective safeguard of the land records of Suffolk County. “Although traditional paper mediums are increasingly susceptible to disaster, we utilize state-of-the-art computer storage systems to hold digital images of these paper mediums to provide an added layer of security in the protection of the public record,” concluded Pascale.

South Country Ambulance and SCPD Officers Reunite with Mother and Baby they Helped Save

Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone and Suffolk County Police Acting Commissioner Stuart Cameron joined South Country Ambulance personnel and two Fifth Precinct officers during a press conference on September 30 at 11:30 a.m. as they reunited with a Bellport mother and the baby they helped deliver. Officers Ryan Quarte and Jaime Tagliamonte responded to a Bellport home on August 19 at 7:30 a.m. for a woman in labor. When they arrived, they located Heather Warren on her kitchen floor in active labor.

The officers assisted South Country Ambulance Chief of Department Greg Miglino, Assistant Chief of Operations Joseph Craig, Paramedic Luis Salinas and EMTs Danielle Hanley and Anna Lasorsa in delivering the baby. The baby boy was born with the umbilical cord wrapped around his neck and once it was removed, he showed signs of distress and required additional medical attention at the scene. Thanks to the efforts of the first responders, both Warren and her baby named Kendall are healthy.

Starting a Business in Suffolk County assumed business name. These are usually referred to as DBA's. DBA certificates must contain specific information. A Business Certificate form for filing can be obtained by visiting the County Clerk’s website at www. suffolkcountyny.gov/Clerk and clicking on online forms. At this time all new business filings are required to be sent in via mail to: County Clerk’s Office, 310 Center Drive, Riverhead, NY 11901.

State law provides that the County Clerk's Office files certificates for persons conducting business under an

There are three basic DBA filings: Original; Amendments; Discontinuances.

Original DBA

Prior to filing an original DBA, the filer should review business names already assigned to ensure that the desired name is available.

A list of current DBA's is available for public review on the County Clerk website. All business names must consist of words that are used in the English language or it will be presumed to be a surname which can only be used by the person whose surname it is. Using a dictionary is advised to determine if the name you seek to use is acceptable. After checking on available names, and choosing a name that is available, a completed DBA form is filed in the Clerk's Office with a fee of $35.00. The fee of $35.00 covers the filing, a certified copy for the filer's record and a certified copy for a business bank account.

Amending a DBA

A DBA can be amended by

filing a copy of the appropriate amendment form at the Clerk's Office. The form can be obtained from various stationery stores, or by visiting the County Clerk’s website. Amendments can only be filed to change the business name, the business address, or to add or remove partners. Amendments and discontinuances require a reference to the original or most recent filing. The filing fee for an amended DBA is $35.00.

Discontinuing a DBA

A DBA can be discontinued when the individual or partners cease to conduct business. Like amendments, discontinuance requires reference to the original filing and amendments. Again, the

form can be obtained from various stationery stores, or by visiting the County Clerk’s website. There is no fee for filing discontinuance.

Other Business Types

In addition to a DBA and Partnership, there are other types of business that can be started in New York such as Limited Liability Companies and Corporations. Both of these business types and others are created with the New York Secretary of State. Additional information can be obtained at www.dos.ny.gov. Upon creating a new business it is always advisable to discuss with an attorney and tax professional which business type suites your goals and needs.

Tierney Challenges Sini for Suffolk District Attorney Seat By Barbara LaMonica

Brookhaven Town resident, Ray Tierney, is making his first bid for public office as he looks to challenge Suffolk County incumbent District, Attorney Timothy D. Sini, (D), for the seat. Tierney is a registered blank, and he will appear on the Republican and Conservative lines of the ballot. "I am not a registered Republican, I'm not a registered Conservative, and I've never run for public office, " Tierney said. Tierney, who left the Kings County District Attorney’s Office in March of 2021, is now employed in the title of Chief Council of Compliance and Enforcement for Suffolk County OTB. Touting his "zero tolerance for bail and parole violators," Tierney said he will work to repeal New York’s "failed bail reform." Tierney's platform for election includes "bringing integrity" to

As a result of severe flooding from Hurricane Ida on September 1, 2021, Suffolk AME members from Suffolk County Fire Rescue and Emergency Services and Suffolk County Police Communications--both populations now recognized as first responders under S7121/A7366 signed into State law on 9/11/2021--fielded nearly 5,000 911 calls between 6 p.m. Wednesday evening and 9 a.m. Thursday morning, many of which reported emergencies in the NYC area and required relay.

the District Attorney’s Office. "I'm running because I want to bring my experience and integrity to the District Attorney’s office that has been plagued by politically motivated prosecutors, which has been missing for decades," Tierney said, criticizing the incumbent DA of "holding press conferences on arrests and arraignment, not sentencings." Tierney, who says he's a proven prosecutor with a record of success, fairness and integrity, stated, "I want to turn the office around, and I'm not beholden to any one political party." As part of his overhaul plan, Tierney reported he also wants to re-establish the District Attorney’s Gang Unit, and Suffolk County Gang Task Force. He underscored that he also wants to implement "expansion of the District Attorney’s White Collar Crimes Bureau to combat identity theft and cyber crimes."

"We've suffered from corruption in the DA's office which did nothing for the last 16 months when Jimmy Burke resigned," Tierney stated, referring to the case on former DA Spota's corruption charges. "Tim

stated. "Not so!" countered DA Sini. "Spota was arrested weeks before I took over, and since taking office," Sini said, "we fired a number of employees." Tierney said he is confident he will win the November election. "I'm extremely confident. What we're seeing in the local and state and federal levels, we're seeing in our DA with incompetence and inaction, which is going to lead to disastrous consequences for taxpayers," Tierney said. But Sini, who made no accusations against Tierney in his interview, countered his opponent's accusations when asked to respond, stating, "My opponent is running a race entirely based on lies. The party bosses just gave him a patronage job working at OTB. Based on our record," Sini emphasized, "we will be successful." Tierney began his law career under Suffolk County District Attorney James Catterson, (R),

for 14 years, then subsequently worked in a private law firm. Tierney returned to the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office in 2002 under Tom Spota where he remained for six years. He left the Suffolk DA's office in 2008 to work in the US Attorney’s Office in the Eastern District of New York as an Assistant District Attorney for 11 years. While in Brooklyn, Tierney oversaw violent street gang investigations, prosecuting MS13 cases leading to incarceration of high profile gang members. He also prosecuted defendants in cases involving Colombian drug cartel, and white collar crimes. Tierney was also part of the team that prosecuted former Nassau County District Attorney Ed Mangano on corruption charges. Tierney is an alumnus of Brown University and St. John's University School of Law. He is married with four children.

Suffolk AME Members in Emergency Telecommunications Roles Honored at Union Headquarters On Monday, September 27, 2021, Suffolk AME gathered with members from FRES, FRES Office of Emergency Management, and Suffolk County Police Communications, who were on shift the night of September 1st, in order to recognize their efforts during the storm as well as their unwavering dedication to the people of Suffolk County and the greater New York community. Suffolk AME President Daniel C. Levler discussed the importance of the work performed by our members

in Emergency Telecommunications roles, saying: “Our FRES and Public Safety Emergency Telecommunicators are the link between an emergency and life-saving response. They are the calm voice on the other end of an emergency call, taking down and relaying important data and dispensing critical advice, all while operating multiple monitors and complicated systems. The work our brothers and sisters do is not easy. We are proud to see them get the first responder recognition they deserve, and we are ready to continue advocacy on their behalf to ensure they have all of the resources they need to help keep Suffolk County safe.” Deputy Presiding Officer Kara Hahn shared her appreciation for our members in a statement, reading: "While Hurricane Ida raged through our region, our County employees showed up to field emergency calls from residents across Suffolk County...The emergency dispatchers and operators are there

for callers when they are in some of the most harrowing situations of their lives...The Departments' ability to handle three times the normal call volume generated the evening Hurricane Ida came barreling through is a testament to the hard work and dedication of our County employees." Members were honored with Proclamations from Suffolk AME, Presiding Officer Rob Calarco, and

Deputy Presiding Officer Kara Hahn. While they were unable to attend the event due to a last-minute scheduling conflict, AME President Daniel C. Levler expressed appreciation of Suffolk County Presiding Officer Rob Calarco, Deputy Presiding Officer Kara Hahn, and Public Safety Chair Legislator Tom Donnelly for their continued support and advocacy on behalf of the dedicated first responders of Suffolk AME.

Suffolk County Legislator Steven J. Flotteron helped bring awareness to the issues Veterans face such as PTSD, mental illness, homelessness and recovery. In collaboration with the Islip Arts Council (IAC), they hosted an art exhibit titled "Their Story", curated by Veterans Sean Fitzthum and Dave Rogers at the IAC satellite location at Westfield Mall featuring the work of local Veteran artists. This project included resources for the Veterans through the combination of art, the movie "Walk With Frank", which will be shown in the Westfield Mall parking lot on a 52-foot screen on the rain date Thursday, October 21 at 7:30pm. Tickets can be purchased at movielotdrivein. com and a resource center. The resource

center displayed in the courtyard area in the Mall featured the services of Good Samaritan Hospital and local Veteran community organizations such as Walk With Frank Foundation, Warrior Ranch Foundation, United Veteran's Beacon House, Inc., Project9line and Cooking for Long Island Veterans, Amvets and Great South Bay Coalition. “I was honored to see so many community members and Veterans at tonight’s overwhelmingly successful Veterans Awareness Project. I am proud to have been able to sponsor tonight’s event along with Good Samaritan Hospital, Islip Arts Council, Kerzner Contracting Corp., Bay Shore Lions, Francis Beringer, Legislator Cilmi and Ken Nevor”, said Legislator Flotteron.

& Engineering Study. This plan will be a crucial first step towards solving the unique challenges facing Fire Island’s wastewater management needs. Fire Island has only one small sewage treatment plant in the Village of Ocean Beach, therefore most residents and numerous tourists rely on antiquated septic and cesspool systems. These aging systems contribute to water quality impairments, harmful

algal blooms, and loss of fisheries in the surrounding waterways, including Great South Bay and Shinnecock Bay. “Now we can take the first step towards understanding the extent of the Fire Island nitrogen pollution problem and finding solutions that protect our waterways, fisheries, community, and our tourism industry,” said Legislator Flotteron.

Grand Marshal Selected for Veterans Day Parade Suffolk County Legislator Jimmy Mazzerella is joined by chamber officials, family and friends in congratulating Jean Littman who was recently selected as the 2021 Grand Marshal of the East Moriches Veterans Day Parade. She is a Korean war veteran. The Parade is Sunday, November 7, @ 2:00PM. Jean Littman served in the Marines from 1952-1955, during the Korean War, and she served in multiple positions. At first she was part of the motor pool, where she worked as a driver for two years at El Toro, Santa Anna, California. She was also assigned to re-enlistment and recruiting and spent many days supporting the airfield. After El Toro, she was stationed at Henderson Hall in D.C., where she worked at the Marine Corps Institute. During the Korean War, she earned her National Defense Medal and her Good Conduct Medal. She served her three-year enlistment and had planned to re-enlist when she met

Senator Weik Introduces Legislation to Make Employees Terminated for Choosing Not to Receive the Coronavirus Vaccine Eligible for Unemployment Insurance

On September 27, 2021, the State of New York mandated that certain employees, including all healthcare facility workers, receive the coronavirus vaccine or be fired. Unlike most of the workforce with similar vaccine mandates, these employees do not have the option of receiving regular COVID testing in lieu of the vaccine. Virtually all of the impacted employees have been on the front line of the pandemic, bravely protecting and caring for the sick, vulnerable, and elderly. “The decision to get vaccinated

OPINION

should be an individual’s choice. No employee should have to choose between making a personal healthcare decision and their careers. A choice between the two is no choice at all,” said Senator Weik. In light of this mandate from the State, Senator Weik has introduced legislation that would permit employees who lose their job solely for choosing not receive the coronavirus vaccine and who do not have the option of receiving regular COVID testing instead, to be eligible

for unemployment insurance. A copy of the legislation can be found HERE. “The individuals that are losing their jobs are the same ones who have bravely risked their lives to protect us throughout the pandemic. Over the past year a half we have rightly provided unemployment benefits to any individual that suffered a hardship or lost their job due to the pandemic—we must extend the same benefits to these heroes,” said Senator Weik.

Amendments Threaten Voting Integrity in New York

By Rick Hinshaw When we vote on Election Day, corruption in Albany and election integrity will be on the ballot. The New York State Legislature has quietly passed, and placed on the November ballot, three proposed state constitutional amendments-all of which would undermine the integrity of our elections, and further corrupt our state government by enshrining permanent one-party rule in Albany. As former Congressman and state Assembly minority leader John Faso explained in a recent op ed piece in Newsday, the three amendments would enact universal access to absentee ballots, regardless of need; allow Election Day voter registration; and undermine the Independent Redistricting Commission adopted by voters just seven years ago to end partisan redrawing of state and Congressional legislative districts. Ballot Proposition 1 would undermine the 2014 constitutional amendment

designed to safeguard bipartisanship in redistricting. This would empower the Democratic majority in both houses of the legislature to control redistricting to its partisan advantage--thereby strengthening its oneparty stranglehold on state government. We have already seen the consequences of such one-party rule in recent years: higher taxes and out-of-control spending that are devastating our state economy and hurting families; corruption at the highest levels of state government; undermining of parental rights in the education of our children; and enactment of a radical proabortion law that goes beyond even the extremes of Roe v. Wade. Ballot Proposition 3 would amend the state Constitution to allow Election Day registration, with no adequate time for verifying the eligibility of new registrants before they cast a vote. And new, sameday registrants will vote by machine, rather than paper ballot--so there will be no way to disqualify their votes if it

is later determined that their registration is invalid. This is an open invitation to fraud. Moreover, it will only encourage the kind of last-minute negative smear campaigns, often based on half-truths or outright falsehoods, that so poison our political system.

from home on Election Day-to be eligible to vote by absentee ballot. Allowing universal absentee voting will-as we saw last year, when such voting was allowed due to the Covid pandemic--result in extraordinary delays in tallying election results. Worse,

Ballot Proposition 4 will amend the state Constitution to allow “no-excuses” absentee voting. Currently, New Yorkers must have a reason--illness, disability, scheduled absence

it is an open invitation to vote harvesting and outright fraud. In 2005, a bipartisan commission chaired by former President Jimmy Carter and

former Reagan and Bush White House Chief of Staff James Baker warned that “Absentee ballots remain the largest source for potential voter fraud,” through such practices as interception of ballots in the mail; pressure or intimidation applied to voters “at home, in nursing homes, at the workplace, or in church”; and outright “vote buying schemes.” They recommended extensive safeguards against such practices--none of which are included in this proposed amendment. For the integrity of our elections, the protection of our freedoms, and an end to rampant corruption in state government, it is up to us to defeat Ballot Propositions One, Three, and Four on Election Day. Please vote “No” on each of them. Rick Hinshaw, who served for three years as public information officer for the late Nassau County District Attorney Denis Dillon, is a former editor of The Long Island Catholic, and a former Conservative Party candidate for the New York State Assembly.

SUFFOLK CLOSEUP BY KARL GROSSMAN A key to dealing with the affordable housing crisis in Suffolk County is having a variety of housing: such as accessory dwelling units, multifamily housing, shared housing, duplexes, small and medium apartment communities. But an obstacle in having diversity in housing types are zoning rules that heavily favor single-family homes. Suffolk is largely zoned for singlefamily homes, notes Michael Daly, founder and leader of East End YIMBY—for Yes In My Backyard—the group working for affordable housing. Zoning in some areas of Suffolk, “especially on the East End, is limited nearly exclusively to singlefamily homes and is one of the biggest contributing factors to the high cost of a house here and the availability of affordable housing,” he says. “Zoning Rules Strangling Long Island,” was the title of a 2019 essay by Professor Michael Lewyn, associate director of the Institute on Land Use and Sustainable Development at the Touro Law Center. “Why isn’t Long Island building more housing? As in many other places, local zoning codes treat housing as a scary thing that must be strictly limited.” The issue has been bubbling here for years. “Why Is It So Hard to Build Multifamily

Housing on Long Island?” was the title of a 2016 essay by Nancy Rauch Douzinas, president of the Rauch Foundation. “Long Island—world-renown for singlefamily homes—has fewer multifamily housing options than other suburbs near New York City,” she wrote. She cited a foundation-commissioned study which found that “land zoned for apartments is vanishingly scarce on Long Island.” She said “enlightened leadership” is necessary to “enable our children and grandchildren, once grown, to live nearby” and also to “attract younger workers if we want the businesses that we need to locate here. The key is to develop multifamily housing that young people can afford.” The situation isn’t limited to Long Island. “The Zombie That Is Single-Family Zoning—Destroy It Before It Destroys Us,” was an essay by Atticus LeBlanc in August on www.forbes.com He wrote that “we’re in a situation where we need much more housing supply. We’ve needed it for a long time, and we still need the ability to create more housing much faster. Single-family zoning remains the biggest obstacle standing in the way.” He said “affordable housing advocates” have sought a change for years “knowing full well that systemic racism runs deep in local housing ordinances, and that more multi-family

desperate homelessness problem and a deepening housing affordability crisis, according to a broad collection of economists and housing experts.” Earlier that week the California Legislature “took a big step” toward “advancing a bill that would allow two-unit buildings on lots that for generations have been reserved exclusively for single-family homes.”

Consider California where decades ago housing prices hit the roof nationally—and where large numbers of people are now living in tents along streets in many areas.

In September, California Governor Gavin Newsom signed a package of housing legislation. “California’s New Housing Laws: Here’s What to Know” was the headline of a follow-up New York Times story. Reporting that the “state’s median home price has crept above $800,000,” it said California’s “housing crisis has a seemingly simple

It quoted Mr. Newsom saying: “The housing affordability crisis is undermining the California Dream for families across the state, and threatens our long-term growth and prosperity.” In Suffolk, Jim Morgo knows a lot about housing—he’s former deputy county executive for housing. For many years his family lived in a single-family home in Bayport. Now, he and his wife reside in a 40-unit condominium, in Bayport, too. Although on five acres, “it doesn’t seem overly dense or overcrowded,” says Mr. Morgo. That’s because “density is not a number, it’s design: the placement of buildings, landscaping, building in harmony with nature.” In contrast, a megamansion on several acres can be “hideous.” Of condominium life for his wife and him, Mr. Morgo said last week: “It’s wonderful.”

THE BETTOR ANGLE

Zach Wilson is Just Like the Rest

TM

BY TOM BARTON "The New York Jets select QB Zach Wilson". Those were the words spoken in April and Jets fans had mixed reactions. Sure, Wilson could become the franchise quarterback that this organization has yearned for for years, but Wilson also came with question marks. Those question marks began with the field generals who went after Wilson's name was called. Trey Lance, Justin Fields, and Mac Jones all were selected after Wilson. Kyle Trask, Kellen Mond and Davis Mills all went in the first 3 rounds, some were thought to be a value selection. The Jets naysayers believed that Wilson was too small, too raw and New York could have waited and picked a QB later in the draft. At this point, after 3 games, it's fair to say that Wilson is actually having a 'not so bad' start to his NFL career. I know that all the Gang Green fans reading this might shake their head at

that comment but it's been a struggle for all of the new gun slingers to begin 2021. Wilson's struggles have been right in line with what this rough group has endured. Let's take a look at his QB class and how they are fairing thus far. Trey Lance has one completion and was a healthy scratch in their second game of the year. Bears fans believed that Justin Fields was the chosen one, only to watch him go out there in his first start, complete just 6 passes and throw for a horrid 68 yards. Mac Jones? Well Jones is a game manager in every aspect of the word. He's been the starter since opening day but has only thrown 2 TD passes in 3 games and has more picks than scores. They aren't asking him to do too much. Davis Mills is now getting starts because of an injury but Mills also only has 2 TD passes in two games and hasn't thrown for more than 168 yards. Mond and Trask are buried

on the bench. Which brings us to Wilson. Zach Wilson isn't winning games and he has made a ton of mistakes (7 INTs) but he also is a 3 game starter at this point and he is throwing quite a bit for a rookie, which gives him development. Wilson already has 105 attempts and while his completion percentage isn't where you want it, he has completed 19 or more passes every game. Mac Jones might have better numbers, but the Jets offense runs through Wilson, for better or worse. Wilson's early season struggles can give Jets fans headaches, but when you look at his QB class you can take some solace in knowing that they are all having their issues. And since we are talking about young QB issues, what about the man who was drafted in front of Wilson? Trevor Lawrence, the can't miss uber prospect, well he,

New York Jets QB Zach Wilson

like Wilson has 7 picks in 3 games and like the rest of this group is having a mountain of growing pains. So when you are trying to evaluate

Zach Wilson do so with an eye on the future, and maybe look away for 2021, because things are ugly early on.

“On the Hard” or In The Water

Clearly, there are some basic steps to decommissioning and one of them is to get the boat safely “onto the hard”, as the old-timers call dry-dock. Storing your winterized boat in the water can only be done in a very controlled environment with, generally, professional and near-constant attention. Even with signs of global-heating all around us, (I think “global warming” sounds too benign), the creeks and coves of “Out East” freeze up for much of the winter. Even Moriches Bay itself has frozen across over the years and I am talking about recent years. The only upside to storing your winterized boat in the water is that you

don’t have to pay to haul the boat and return it to the water in the Spring. I still believe that that can be penny-wise and poundfoolish if this watery winter berth isn’t a very controlled environment… Recall that 80% of boats that do sink do so at the dock. So, let’s focus this column on spending the winter “on the hard”…

Making a List and Checking It Twice

If you are going to hand the boat over to the dock master and say, “see you in the Spring”, do so with a written check list, especially if you intend to do some of the work yourself. As you’ll see, the advice below is not 100% extensive. I’d need most of the newspaper to give you a check list that could be used by every boat. (BTW, if you want a copy of the Boat-US/Seaworthy article on winterization, email me below and I will email a copy to you.) So, work with your dock master in signing off on what will be done by the yard and, if you desire to be involved, by you. Some ideas/ categories: • Change the oil and oil filters • Change the lubricant in engine transmission or the outboard lower unit • Apply fogging manufacturer

Usually, as soon as I write a column on de-commissioning the boat for the winter season, Indian Summer arrives to bathe us in the last warmth of the year. As of this writing, it hasn’t happened so I’m writing it for information – and in the hope Indian Summer will get here! This weather is windy, wet and cold – but a reminder that many months of kindly weather are behind us and many months of dark, cold and dreary weather are ahead of us. So, here we go – Indian Summer or not! Even if you hand off your boat to your dock master and say, “see you in the Spring”, there are some tips in here that you will want to be aware of. This column is about that.

VETERANS WAY BY REV. FREDERICK MILLER. PH.D. Suicide is the 10th leasing cause of death in the United States. Suicide is death caused by oneself with the intent to die. Suicides are caused by many different factors no matter the race or age of the person; how rich or poor they are. It is true that most people who die by suicide have a mental or emotional disorder. The most common underlying disorder is depression or bipolar disorder. Other causes include terminal illness, severe pain, loss of a loved one, family problems, bullying or sexual violence. It is the second leading cause of death for people 10-34, the fourth leading cause among people 34- 54, and the fifth leading cause among people ages 45-54. Prior to the COVID 19 virus infection, the VA reported that 20 to 22 veterans committed suicide every day. Those suicide figures have been reported back before 2012. Unfortunately the suicide rate given to us does not include reports from at least two states and those who died in motorcycle or car accidents done on purpose. The COVID virus forced many to remain home, unable to go to work due to the lock down used to try to stop the spread of the virus. This caused the Veteran suicide rate to rise up to over 30 Veterans per day. Back in 2012 when the Suffolk County American Legion formed the Post Traumatic Stress (PTS) committee to help our veterans, we asked doctors to help us. The main problem the doctors could not understand was why veterans that were never deployed suffered from PTSD. Working with our veterans we discovered in 2015 that those veterans never deployed did not suffer from PTSD, but suffered from Moral Injury (MI). Moral codes are

shaped and evolve throughout our lives and provide the scheme or the compass from which we make decisions and actions on what is good or bad. When our moral compass in violated, a Moral Injury can occur. Moral Injury is the bio-psycho-socialspiritual distress that occurs following a violated and/or betrayal of one’s moral compass. Active duty can expose a veteran to a number of traumas and experiences that civilians can’t understand and relate to. Veterans are often faced with experiences that can leave them feeling isolated and stigmatized.

moral disorientation, resulting in negative psychological and emotional consequences that can heighten the risk of suicide. The diagnosis is Moral Injury which is not considered a mental illness, yet it does affect mental health. We need to point out that treatments traditionally used to target PTSD symptoms may be counterproductive for those with MI, particularly exposure therapies which can worsen shame-based symptoms. Moral Injury has been shown to increase the risk of suicide in veterans post service. However,

alcohol or drugs. Unfortunately the alcohol or drugs lead to a stronger isolation and anger that can end up in a divorce. The only next step they see is to escape it all by committing suicide. Not only is their life lost, but the family suffers greatly from the veteran ending their life by suicide. If they love their family they need to seek the help that is nearby. Since Moral Injury is not a mental illness, but a spiritual distress it can be best helped by clergy, rather than doctors. Not only can the clergy help

Those experiences of those that have not been deployed, such as training, behaviors undertaken in military service can incite deep feelings of distrust, anger, shame and guilt. Those deployed face even more moral problems such as shooting or killing the enemy, and more so in the Vietnam and the current war where the enemy is dressed in civilian clothes and were often females and children. This can lead to a threat to the integrity of one’s moral schema, or a

when they first get out of the service their time is filled trying to adjust to civilian life, find a job and raise a family. Later when they are near retirement and the home nest empties, their military memories return with the guilt and shame of their moral injury. This causes chronic sadness and an intense emotional distress. They are afraid to seek medical help for fear of being labeled with a mental illness, so they usually try to treat themselves with

treat moral injury, but they will not report the treatment to anyone. They understand the problems of moral injury and can really be of great help. The Northport VA hospital has well trained chaplains that can be very helpful for those suffering. Their telephone number is (631) 261-4400. The Suffolk County American Legion sponsored a program where they invited a chaplain from the National VA Chaplain Foundation to train

about 50 clergy to help veterans with moral injury. If you cannot find a clergy to help you contact us we can supply the name of a local clergy that can help. (Drfred72@Gmail.com) The best treatment for Moral Injury is by the support of other veterans, either one on one or in a group. Listening is important. If possible have the veteran tell his story, or write his story. As stated before the cause of the Moral Injury is the killing of the enemy or witnessing an act against their moral beliefs. At that point you can explain some Scriptures to him. First and most important is explaining the Commandment “You shall not kill.” However, the Commandment is “You shall not Murder.” (Exodus 20:13 and Deuteronomy 5:17) The Hebrew language employs several words to express the idea, to kill. The verb used here can only mean murder. Murder is a crime, while killing is done with some form of justification, such as being directed to do so in war, or to save you or someone else’s life. Ecclesiastes 3:3 states “a time to kill and a time to heal” and in Verse 8 “a time for war ad a time for peace.” Let me stress that they are afraid to seek medical help because of the stigma. Therefore, they will not talk to a doctor or any other official about their problem. However, they will talk to a fellow veteran. Thus the peer to peer or veteran to veteran program in your church can help these and other veterans with other problems. If you can prevent one suicide the program is more than worth the effort. But be assured you will be helping your veterans who were willing to endanger their lives to insure your freedom.

Help is available to you by calling the local VA hospital in Northport, (631) 261-4400 or Veterans Crisis Line 1-800-273-8255, press 1 to talk to a veteran or have a confidential chat at VeteransCrisisLine.net or text to 838255. If you have any question relating to veteran problems please do not hesitate to contact us and we will do our best to answer it. Contact us at Drfred72@Gmail.com

OF MEN & ANGELS

The Archangel Ariel

BY DOMINICK FORTE The Coptic Orthodox Church of Alexandria is an Oriental Orthodox Christian Church based in Egypt, servicing Africa and the Middle East. The Archangel Ariel has appeared in Coptic writings as well as apocryphal and mystical Judeo-Christian writings. He is both an overseer of nature and the regulator of the underworld. In the latter role, Ariel takes on the fierce presence of punishing those who transgress into darkness. The association of Ariel with the spirit of nature is immortalized by Shakespeare, who portrayed this archangel as a tree sprite in The Tempest. In this play Ariel gains secret knowledge on behalf of the magician Prospero. In the Old Testament book of Isaiah, chapter 29: 1-8, there is a reference to a Holy Land city named Ariel, which theologians believe is symbolic of Jerusalem since it is said that King David lived there.

Ariel has appeared in artwork as a small female fairy to illustrate Shakespeare’s The Tempest and as a delicate young angel in one of the Sopo Archangel paintings from 1600s Columbia. The Sopo painting is entitled “Ariel: Command of God,” although it doesn’t convey any fierceness. The gender of this archangel is controversial. Ultimately, it’s not an important point compared to the vast resources Ariel offers us. Besides which, as all angels Ariel doesn’t have a physical body, and so is essentially genderless or androgynous. However, her specialties and energy exude femininity to many who have connected to Ariel as a feminine Archangel. Ariel is a healing angel who works closely with the Archangel Raphael, especially when it comes to helping birds, fish, and other animals in the wild. He also can help heal domesticated mammals,

the proper treatment of people and animals as part of her mission. She works to ensure that there’s enough healthful food, clean water, proper shelter, and other necessary supplies.

birds, and fish. The Archangel Ariel is believed to be a leader of the Virtues choir of angels in the angelic hierarchy. This is the group of angels who govern the order of the physical universe, watching over the sun, moon, stars, and the Earth and all of the planets.

For this reason, Ariel is intimately involved in environmentalism. Ariel is an ideal patron for one who feels called upon to work in fields protective of the Earth’s ecology, oceans, air quality, or animals. As the angel of our planet’s natural resources, Ariel ensures

The Archangel Ariel will also introduce us to the non-physical side of nature when called upon. Anyone who wants to connect with the fairies and other elementals seek out Ariel as a guide. She’ll help us navigate through the naturespirit realm to meet the benevolent beings who populate gardens, parks, flowers, trees, and bodies of water. With her connection to nature and environmentalism she plays an important role in ensuring the health and well-being of our planet. The literal meaning of Ariel’s name is “Lion (or Lioness) of God” which would attest to his or her dominion over all the Earth, its creatures, and nature.

Love and Sex Addiction

ASK MICHELLE “Your Family Therapist”

BY MICHELLE CAVALERI, LCSW-R

Wedding Officiant & NYS Divorce Mediator

Love and sex addicts are caught in a painful paradox. The normal need for an intimate relationship collides with a terror of closeness. When your body internalizes that human connection is traumatic, the search for love collides with fear and you repeatedly find yourself spiraling between periods of intense pleasure and unbearable isolation in your romantic relationships. Like drugs, sex and love addiction medicate painful feelings. You may find the mind-altering effects of romance necessary to feel happy. Without a relationship - or the pursuit of one – life seems empty and void of pleasure. Over time, this pattern creates extreme fatigue and despair. You feel like you’re drowning. Unwanted moods and habits plague you – procrastination, ambivalence, confusion, irritability, and boredom. The addiction allows you to feel in control of yourself or others but leaves behind a shame filled residue of darkness. Sex and love become commodities to alter reality and ultimately, the addiction becomes a form of self-abuse.

CONTROL, FEAR, AND SHAME

understand you enough. As a result, the following patterns may emerge:

Surprisingly, sex and love addiction are not about either love or sex. It’s a desperate search for connection, belonging, and love that gets distorted into control, fear, and shame. You constantly work to control someone else’s behavior or ideas about you in an effort to secure love. To avoid abandonment, love gets twisted into emotional quicksand. You fight back using control, fear, and shame.

• Increased fear or hopelessness during periods of separation from the relationship. • A lack of trust that your partner is faithful or can handle your needs. • Craving more sex or shutting down sexually. • Changes in eating and/or spending patterns.

CONTROL

You may attempt to control the situation by getting plastic surgery, moving away, changing careers, having more children, or choosing not the have children. Efforts to control your partner may range from constantly needing to know where he or she is, withholding finances, affection, and sex, or making all the decisions about the future of the relationship.

FEAR

Fear prevents you from being emotionally accessible to another person. You learn to hide your authentic feelings in order to protect yourself from

• Increased use of alcohol or other addictive substances. • Nightmares that leave you feeling insecure and panicked. being hurt. On the outside, you may seem strong and confident, but inside, you feel like a child who is terrified of being abandoned, hurt, and rejected.

personality. You do this to separate parts of yourself that others don’t like. Compartmentalization creates more disconnect, which produces shame.

SHAME

As with any drug, sex and love will eventually stop providing the “high” necessary to feel normal. Relationships become empty, dark, and void of anything rewarding to feel normal. You may feel your partner doesn’t know you enough, want you enough, and

The shame from cultural beliefs and childhood wounds prevents you from knowing your worth. Growing up lonely and frightened, teaches you that you aren’t lovable. You learn how to compartmentalize your

• Times of extreme anxiety or panic when pursuing ambitions. • Isolation from friends and hobbies that once brought you pleasure. • Dampened desire for life that may manifest as depression. Without a break in the cycle, the addictive system will gain power and momentum. Intervention is necessary to free yourself from the negative consequences!
