Suffolk County Legislator Arrested for Allegedly Offering to Illegally Supply a Prostitute with Narcotics in Exchange for a Sex Act to surrender his passport and any firearms in his possession. He is due back in court on Feb. 26. If convicted of the top count, Spencer faces a maximum sentence of up to nine years in prison.

The DEA’s Long Island Heroin Task Force comprises law enforcement agents from the DEA, New York State Police, Suffolk County Police Department, Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office, Nassau County Police Department and Nassau County Sheriff’s Office.

Sini and the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (“DEA”) announced the arrest of a Suffolk County Legislator for allegedly offering to illegally supply narcotics to a prostitute in exchange for a sex act.

Dr. William “Doc” Spencer, 53, of Centerport, is charged with Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance in the Third Degree, a class B felony, and Criminal Sale of a Controlled Substance in the Third Degree, a class B felony.

“The message here is that the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office will continue to work in partnership with all of the law enforcement agencies operating here on Long Island, including the DEA and members of the Long Island Heroin Task Force, to hold criminals accountable no matter who they are or what their walk of life is,” District Attorney Sini said.

“This investigation is very much ongoing, and justice will be served in this case.”

“Our investigations take us down diverse paths but always end up at the same conclusion-identifying and arresting drug traffickers,” said DEA Special Agent in Charge Ray Donovan. “Opioid abuse is on the rise again and law enforcement is hard at work tracking down those who fuel drug addiction through distribution. I applaud our law enforcement partners on their diligent work throughout this investigation.”

Spencer has served as a Suffolk County Legislator since January 2012 and represents Suffolk County’s 18th Legislative District.

He is also a physician who currently serves as the Chief of Otolaryngology at Huntington Hospital and has his own private medical practice located at 25 East Carver Street in Huntington.

Pursuant to an investigation by the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office and the DEA’s Long Island Heroin Task Force, Spencer was contacted by an undercover police officer posing as a prostitute on Oct. 20. Spencer allegedly agreed via text message to unlawfully provide the undercover police officer with oxycodone pills.

Spencer was arrested at the arranged meeting location in his County-issued vehicle and was found in possession of two oxycodone pills.

Spencer was arraigned by Acting Suffolk County Court Judge Pierce Cohalan and was released on his own recognizance. He was ordered

Suffolk Voters to Consider Propositions I & II

When Suffolk residents go to the polls on November 3, in addition to casting votes in high stakes, contentious federal and state races, they will need to remember to flip their ballots and consider how they will vote for two propositions. Residents who vote by absentee ballot must also check the backs of their ballots if they want their voices heard on the two issues at hand.

Proposition I, (sponsored by Democrat Legislator Samuel Gonzalez), if approved, would extend the terms of the Suffolk County Legislature from two years to four years. Under current law, legislators may serve a maximum of six 2-year terms, bringing the length of their tenure to 12 years. If the measure is approved, term limits would remain in effect, with lawmakers

who are re-elected serving out three 4-year terms. The clock on extended terms, if approved, would start ticking January 2022.

A similar proposal put before voters in 2002, overwhelmingly failed to garner the approval of the

majority of the voting electorate.

Proponents for term increases assert running for election every four years, in contrast to running in two year cycles, will give elected officials more time to concentrate on seeing projects through to fruition in

their legislative districts. Suffolk County Presiding Officer Rob Calarco said four year terms would give lawmakers “more time” to govern. “Right now, you do a year of government, then you have to start campaigning to raise money, so a lot of time is spent campaigning, and not as much time is spent focusing on long term planning for Suffolk County,” Calarco said.

“And in instances where you have close races,” Calarco pointed out, “you’re spending between $100,000 and $150,000, and it’s harder to be a grassroots candidate.”

Conversely, opponents of the measure say two year terms hold elected officials “more accountable” to their constituents who, if not satisfied with their representatives’ performance after two years, have an opportunity to vote the incumbents out of office. But Continued on page 4

COUNTY Calarco noted, “We’ve done a good job with transparency and accountability.” A similar measure passed in the Town of Brookhaven last year where voters approved the length of councilmembers’ terms to be increased from two years to four years.

Proposition II, if approved, would authorize the Suffolk County Legislature to not repay $154 million in revenues it borrowed from Assessment Stabilization Reserve Fund, (ASRF), designed to stabilize sewer district taxes under the Drinking Water Protection Program. County lawmakers initially borrowed over $29 million in 2011 under former County Executive Steve Levy’s administration to fill budget holes. Subsequently, lawmakers under the Bellone administration borrowed

$171.3 million from the ASRF to help fill budget gaps for the fiscally strapped county. “This year,” Calarco explained, “Suffolk County has to pay $29.4 million back to the ASRF which we are doing as ordered by a judge in a lawsuit we lost against the Long Island Pine Barrens Society.”

Calarco said the legislature would then take $44.4 million out of the ASRF which would include the $29.4 million it put into the ASRF to satisfy the lawsuit, and lawmakers are asking voters to “forgive” the county to pay back the $154 million which will come due in 2029.

“In the year 2019, Suffolk County was ending in a surplus, then the COVID pandemic hit,” Calarco said, noting that the county relies heavily on sales tax

revenues to fund portions of the budget. “We were starting to make headway towards good financial standing, then the pandemic struck,” Calarco said, to the tune of $400 million in shortfall revenues and sales tax revenues falling short another $200 million from what the county expected to generate. Meanwhile, Calarco said the ASRF has “plenty of money to help subsidize the installation of alternative wastewater systems (cesspool replacements).

“We’re going to the voters with full disclosure and transparency and we’re asking them to vote on the propositions,” Calarco said.

“At the end of the day, I have faith in the voting electorate, and they will make the decisions.”

New York State Health Facilities Association Statement on New Visitation Guidelines for Nursing Homes Stephen Hanse, President and CEO of the New York State Health Facilities Association and the New York State Center for Assisted Living (NYSHFA/ NYSCAL), a statewide association representing over 425 long-term care facilities issued the following statement following NYSHFAs delivery of the attached letter to Governor Cuomo and Commissioner Zucker concerning the State’s nursing home visitation and staff testing policies.

“It has been since early March of this year that many nursing home residents throughout New York have been unable to receive visitors in person because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

During this time, nursing home residents have been

isolated from their loved ones and have suffered dearly as a result of being unable to see the people who mean the most to them.”

“While New York has reduced the number of days a nursing home is prohibited from allowing visitation from 28 days to 14 days following a positive test, the State’s one-size fits all restriction on visitation is negatively impacting the health and well being of residents and their families and loved ones.”

“Specifically, NYSHFA is requesting the State to reevaluate its current testing and visitation rules and align them with those required by CMS by implementing the following two initiatives: 1. Require nursing home visitors to present a negative

COVID-19 test only in counties with Medium (5% - 10%) or High (greater than 10%) COVID-19 positivity rates as encouraged by CMS; and 2. Require nursing home staff to be tested monthly in counties with Low (less than 5%) COVID-19 positivity rates and more frequently in counties with Medium or High COVID- 19 positivity rates.”

“These two initiatives safeguard the health and well-being of nursing home residents and will provide clarity, eliminate confusion and dispose of unnecessary impediments that currently prevent residents from seeing their relatives and loved ones.”

Vote No on Suffolk County Ballot Propositions

There are two countywide propositions on this November’s ballot in Suffolk County. I’ll be voting against both.

There is also a town wide proposition in the town of Riverhead to extend the term of the supervisor from two to four years. I recommend Riverhead voters approve it.

PROPOSITION NO. 1

The first countywide proposal is a charter law to change the legislative term of office for a county legislator for two years to four years. This warrants a No vote. The best type of government is that which is closest to the people.

The two-year term for a legislative body provides accountability to the voters.

A four-year term makes sense for an executive who must staff an entire government with department heads and employees. Continuity is important in that sense.

But legislators play a role of deliberating upon the budgets that are submitted by the executive. There’s no major upheaval of staff when an individual legislator leaves office.

Is your legislator more likely to pay attention to you with a two-year term, or if they have four years before you can have your say at the polling booth? That’s why our Constitution provides for a two-year term for our representatives.

PROPOSITION NO. 2

The second resolution would allow the county to renege on its previous promise to return money to the county sewer

As county executive, I passed a law in 2011 that would have allowed some of the excess money in the sewer stabilization fund to be used for new sewers and cesspools throughout the county. So, if you were forced to put a new cesspool in your home, a pot of money would be available to help. Also, our downtowns and areas with poor water quality would have the ability to get sewers. Newsday mischaracterized my law as being a borrowing for the general fund that had to be paid back. Actually, the law called for about 2/3 of the surplus in the fund to go toward environmental purposes.

Now, lawmakers want to go back on that promise.

Passing this resolution will leave dry the account that otherwise would be available to help you, your family, or our businesses, pay for new sewers or for relief for cesspool enhancements. Vote No.

A Suffolk County Legislature task force made up of local teenagers has released a set of recommendations for stopping bullying in schools just as Bullying Prevention Month kicks off in October.

The Suffolk County Youth Anti-Bullying Task Force, made up of residents between the ages of 16 and 18, has worked over the past year to build a comprehensive list of steps that can be taken at the state, county, and school district levels to help prevent bullying and cyberbullying in schools.

In their report presented to the Suffolk County Legislature on Sept. 22, the task force members recommend changing state laws, creating an anti-bullying mobile app that allows students to report bullying and access resources, and encouraging schools to promote student-led anti-bullying clubs.

The task force members also suggest that “push-in” programs and workshops, where speakers on bullying address one or two classes at a time, would be more effective than large presentations and assemblies.

The Suffolk County Legislature has been a leader in working to end bullying. In 2010, lawmakers criminalized cyberbullying of minors, and in 2011 they established October as “Bullying Prevention Awareness Month” in Suffolk County. In 2014, Legislator Sarah Anker spurred the creation of Suffolk County’s bullying awareness website, www.SuffolkStopBullying.org, which provides anti-bullying resources for students, teachers and parents to prevent bullying in schools.

Legislator Tom Cilmi, the Minority Leader of the legislature, stated, “We know that addressing this ages-old issue is complicated, but it cannot be ignored. As someone who was verbally and physically bullied as a child, I have often spoken publicly about this issue. Sadly, bullying today can be much more persistent and pervasive; as we have seen, it all too often leads to tragic consequences. That’s why I was happy to support the creation of the Youth Anti-Bullying Task Force, and why I pledge my support as together we all work to educate, to protect, and ultimately to eradicate bullying altogether.

I commend the members of this task force and thank them for their contribution to this vitally important effort.”

Thousands of Brookhaven Residents Participate in Early Voting

Saturday, October 24th marked the first day of early voting in New York State.

Over 9,000 Voters in Suffolk County waited on lines at early voting sites for over three hours to cast their vote in this years Presidential, federal and state election.

Voters will also have the opportunity to elect numerous judges as well as a County Legislative seat in Brookhaven.

This year Suffolk County voters also have the opportunity to consider 2 countywide ballot propositions.

Early voting was authorized this year to help process tens of thousands of extra voters

because of the presidential election and to help allow for social distancing during the Covid-19 pandemic. Early voting will continue through November 1st.

Pursuant to Executive Order No. 202.17, you are required to wear a mask/face covering and maintain 6 feet of distance when entering any Board of Elections facility or voting poll site.

By all accounts everything in Suffolk County ran very smoothly.

The Suffolk County Board of Elections has established numerous early voting sites throughout Suffolk County. The sites will be open on specific dates and times. Please review chart on page 4.

Bay Area Civic Hosts Meet the Candidates Repealing the dangerous new bail laws and supporting law enforcement were some of the major topics that came up during the Bay Area Civic Association’s meet the candidates forum on Thursday.

Speaking before a crowd of over 30 at the K of C James V. Kavanaugh Council headquarters in Mastic were Assemblyman Joe DeStefano and Alexis Weik, the Islip Town receiver of taxes who is running for the state senate to represent the area. The event was the first by the civic association which was newly reorganized by residents looking to focus government attention to local community issues.

“Making our neighborhoods safer is one of the key issues

in the November 3 election,” Assemblyman DeStefano, a Republican, said in highlighting the failure of the new bail laws supported by the Democrats.

“You can’t let repeat offenders go free and expect crime to go down.”

DeStefano pointed to a recent murder-suicide in Bellport where the suspect had numerous incarcerations and five criminal charges pending. “This man should never have been let out of jail,” DeStefano said. He also pointed to the death of Jonathan Armand Flores-Maldonado in an accident on William Floyd Parkway involving a drunk driver with a history of operating motor vehicles while intoxicated.

Assemblyman Joe DeStefano addressed key issues in the November 3 election including public safety and renewing the Star rebate checks.

Weik noted that both her husband and son are police officers and spoke out against the defund the police movement. “Suffolk police officers are accredited,” Weik told the crowd. “This means that they have to undergo constant training and continually improve their skills. The last thing we should do is to take money away from the departments and make our communities less safe.”

Both candidates pledged to restore the Star tax rebates that were eliminated by the Democrats immediately upon taking control of the state senate after the 2018 election. “The loss of the rebates hit the working-class homeowners of our area particularly hard,” Weik said. “We pay among the highest taxes in the country

thanks to a government that is controlled by New York City interests. We need the rebates.”

The two candidates emphasized the fact that the suburbs have to send representatives to Albany who are not beholden to the city Democrats.

Responding to a question from the audience, the officials said they would never stand for the tearing down of statues of historical figures such as William Floyd, the signer of the Declaration of Independence who is featured in a park at the corner of Montauk Highway and the parkway that bears his name. “Our area has an historical connection to the founding of this country,” DeStefano said. “We are not about to let that be eliminated.”

DeStefano and Weik said a focal point of their tenure will be the passage of a Constitutional amendment that will target corruption and the pay-to-play culture in Albany once and for all. “The state’s ethics commission is controlled by the governor and has no teeth,” DeStefano said. “A Constitutional amendment will create an independent body with independent power that will go after corruption at all levels, including the governor’s office and the legislature where we have seen many arrests and jail sentences in recent years.”

DeStefano pointed out that he was a co-sponsor of legislation supported by the Suffolk district attorney that made illegal dumping

a felony. “The new law stems from illegal dumping schemes that brought tons of hazardous debris from New York City construction projects into our communities,” he said, adding that he will work with Weik as a senator to stiffen environmental laws even further.

We need to fight back by continually electing Republican-Conservatives and not Democrats who are controlled by the city politicians.”

BY KARL GROSSMAN That’s the title of a proposed law now before the Suffolk County Legislature.

Suffolk is not alone in this area in enacting such a law.

The county legislature in neighboring Nassau County voted unanimously last year for a measure involving “reckless riding” of bicycles and also e-scooters and skateboards.

The office of Legislator John Ferretti, Jr., author of the Nassau measure, spoke of it addressing “a new trend that is occurring throughout Long Island where children are riding bikes and scooters recklessly, terrorizing drivers while doing wheelies and playing ‘chicken’ against traffic.”

It allows for impounding of bicycles and a misdemeanor charge.

Complaining about the Nassau bill, the organization Long Island Streets which on its website, longislandstreets. org, says its mission is “advocating for safer streets for all people,” declared that the Nassau law is “not the answer to any problems.”

And in Suffolk County, the Village of Babylon, also last year, enacted a law permitting its code enforcement officers to confiscate bicycles from youths riding recklessly.

of about a dozen youths on bicycles blocking traffic, and riding head-on against traffic. She said that when she spoke to riders, they were rude, that they cursed at people who approached them. “This isn’t kids being kids,” she said, “this is risky behavior…They are children running head-on into a car.”

The proposed Suffolk law is sponsored by Legislator Rudy Sunderman of Shirley, and was originally prepared by Legislator Tom Muratore of Selden. Sunderman took it over after Mr. Muratore passed away recently.

“This legislature finds that some people operating bicycles in Suffolk County are doing so in a manner that is dangerous to cars, pedestrians and the bicyclists themselves,” it declares. It continues saying “reckless bicycling has become a problem in Suffolk County which puts the safety of everyone on county roadways at risk.” It goes on that

There is a set of New York State rules covering bicycling. These include some of what’s in the Long Island measures and also regulations beyond them. The state rules ban bicyclists “clinging to vehicles” to move along. They say, “No person operating a bicycle shall carry any package, bundle, or article which prevents the driver from keeping at least one hand upon the handlebars.”

They say no bicyclist shall “ride with his feet removed from the pedals.”

They go on: “Every bicycle when in use during the period from one-half hour after sunset to one-half hour before sunrise shall be equipped with a lamp on the front which shall emit a white light visible during hours of darkness from a distance of at least five hundred feet.”

Bicycling is regulated in New York State, and soon that could be more so in Suffolk.

As the temperatures continue to drop, we need to focus now on skippering in heavy weather – because it is coming. This column is about that.

Heavy Water

Why is heavy weather more dangerous as we move into the Fall? Well, putting hurricanes aside which are in their own class, heavy weather in the colder months has its own set of challenges. First, hypothermia is but a small slip away. Second, as the water chills, it gets denser per cubic foot. Denser means more “oomph” behind those chops. Third, it gets darker sooner.

What used to be an all daylight trip out to a favorite fishing spot is now a return under the cover of night.

Believe me, once one thing goes wrong, the chances of something else going wrong before you can focus on and fix the first problem just went up. Now you have a

spiraling and accelerating danger curve on your hands. So, what to do if caught in heavy weather…?

Put Your Life Jackets On – Right away, the skipper has to direct everyone to don their life jackets. On my vessel, I have a heavy weather/type-1 life jacket on the back of my helm seat. Across the back, where the crew can read it, it says, “If you see the captain put this on, try to find one for yourself.”

Take Waves at an angle – Those waves that you are trying to muscle through pack tremendous power within them. Did you know that 1 out of every 20 boats that sink at sea does so when the hull comes apart under the force of pounding seas? If that statistic was adjusted for heavy weather sinkings, it would go up dramatically, I’m sure.

Cross the waves at a 45-degree angle - and “tack” across the storm like a sail boat moving to windward.

FROM A TO Z

BY ROBERT CHARTUK As Hurricane Teddy churned miles offshore, he sent his calling card of large surf to our shores. We had been following the storm since it formed off Africa days earlier and many of us gave our fingers a good workout clicking on the National Hurricane Center website to see where the thing was headed. Thankfully, the cone of probability had it sparing the coast, but its track across the Atlantic put it right in our wheelhouse. I’ve always said if you can draw a straight line from an ocean storm to Long island, we’re going to get waves. Teddy did not disappoint.

Cupsogue Beach had beautiful sandbars throughout the spring and the waves were great during what we called the COVID Sessions. They didn’t hold up to Teddy’s onslaught, however, as the waves exploded onto the beach like big, white bombs.

We headed over to Jetty Four and it wasn’t holding up very well there either. A small group had assembled to watch the huge breakers. One guy was just back from Montauk and said the Ranch, just off the lighthouse, was good in the morning. A couple of surfers who I had never met before,

Don’t Be Bashful – If things start to get dicey, get on the radio and call the USCG. Tell them where you are, where you are heading and why you are concerned about the situation. Most likely, the watch stander will take that information and ask you to check in with him or her every 15 minutes. Don’t be late in checking in or you may find a red-and-white helicopter hovering over you. But if you are in trouble, the USCG will know where you were just 15 minutes prior. You started the “rescue starts now” clock the last time you communicated your position.

Any Port in a Storm – OK, you told your spouse you’d be back by 4pm and it is now 6pm and you are struggling against the nor’easter

that is keeping you from operating at speed to get in. Don’t bet your life on a perceived deadline. Your spouse would rather you survive.

Head to the nearest harbor you can safely make, even if that means turning and putting the storm on your stern. Arriving safely in New Jersey is better than not arriving at all.

Surf – If you find the sea is going where you are, consider getting on the back of one of those growlers and staying there, all the way home.

It takes considerable seamanship and helmsmanship to ride the back of a wave but consider this. If you have an outboard engine with a transom cut-out, your “free board” is only that little distance between the water line and the lowest part of that cut-out. Probably 6”-10”. If you have a following sea and one of those growlers catches up with you, he will swamp you from astern.

Stay ahead and he can’t…

Create a Ditch Bag – If things really get dicey, don’t leave the boat until it sinks out from under you.

But have a “ditch bag” ready – cell phone, handheld radio, fresh water, dry clothes, medical kit, flash light, flares, etc come immediately to mind.

I spent 5 days at sea in Hurricane Alberta nearly 40 years ago. I have a healthy respect for the sea and how fast things can go from bad to absolutely awful. Don’t be a statistic. Be the skipper who can say, “I always bring my crew back.”

The cliffs of Montauk afford you a spectacular view of the lighthouse and three famous surf breaks: Turtles Cove, the Ranch, and Radars, which is named for a huge 1960s tower built to keep an eye out for incoming Russians. The cliffs were buzzing with tourists and surfers contemplating the huge waves that were rolling in. Out in front of the lighthouse was the most crowded with about a dozen surfers and both Radars and the Ranch had nice peaks with less of a crowd. If you had a fishing permit, you could drive down a dirt road toward Camp Hero where the tower was located. I didn’t have one; didn’t care. The path brings you to sea level and we found ourselves eye-to-eye with the beasts we were seeing from up high. Though they were large, we considered the waves makeable and sprinted back to the Jeep to suit up…to be continued

Hospital Discharge Planning

Will Medicare pay for my care at home after being discharged from a hospital?

The answer will depend on whether you need long-term or short-term care

medical equipment. Medicare Part A will also cover the cost of hospice care with a terminal diagnosis of less than 6 months.

at home, you will not qualify for Medicare services. Instead, you must either pay privately or apply for Medicaid coverage.

The Medicare program is administered jointly by the state and federal government. Medicare is available to adults 65 years of age and older, or to anyone under the age of 65 who is entitled to Social Security Disability. Medicare provides varying levels of medical coverage, depending on the plan you have. Medicare Part A and Part B, two of the more basic plans, provide coverage for hospitalization stays, rehabilitation, physical therapy, routine doctor visits, and

Medicare Part B is the plan that provides for outpatient services such as short-term homecare. In order to receive Medicare homecare, the care must be ordered by a physician; the patient must be home bound and require intermittent skilled nursing or therapies; and a Medicare certified home health agency must administer the care.

Medicare will provide a maximum of 28 hours of care per week, 35 with additional approval, for a limited period of time. Should you require extensive or full-time care

Similar to Medicare, Medicaid is an insurance program that is funded by the state. Medicaid covers the cost of long-term care so long as you meet the eligibility requirements.

To qualify for Medicaid, you can have up to $15,750 in assets.

Exempt assets include tax deferred retirement accounts and your primary residence valued at less than $893,000 (or a spouse, minor, or disabled child is living in the home). Until recently, Medicaid applicants were able to transfer their excess resources to a third

Recently, New York implemented a 2.5-year lookback on all transfers made to qualify for homecare Medicaid coverage. The change is set to go into effect on April 1, 2021, with a look back for all transfers occurring on or after October 1, 2020. This means that an individual applying for homecare Medicaid post-January 1, 2021, will have to submit 30 months’ worth of financial statements for eligibility purposes. To the extent there are uncompensated transfers or gifting that occurred on or after October 1, 2021, the applicant will be penalized

Some of the more common are listed below: HOPE - that things will be “the way they used to be.” BPD mood swings may have conditioned you to think that, after a bad period, things will get better. If you recognize such a clear cycle, be aware they may also get worse again! The emotional abuse can likely escalate to physical abuse.

UNCLEAR THINKING - Folks in an abusive relationship may be under not only stress but also shock, preventing you from thinking clearly. You may find yourself confused over the way your BPD partner alternates between rages and then normal, loving behavior.

Keep in contact with friends, or

a family member and heed their comments, as they, more then likely will have a clearer perception of the relationship.

EXHAUSTION dealing daily with the fear of a rage, or constantly being on guard against other strange behaviors, will leave you exhausted to the point you may not want to do ANYTHING, let alone leave the relationship! Don’t indulge in substance abuse to “cope.”

LONELINESS - Some folks fear that all they have is their partner.

Out of their fears of abandonment, BPD partner may have been pushing away from you, and you may have been giving too much attention to the relationship as a way of avoiding conflict. Keep in contact with friends and family.

What’s Keeping You from Leaving Your Borderline Personality Partner? your BPD partner cannot get better until he/she wants to. Getting help is their decision. If you want your partner in therapy, then lead by example - go to therapy yourself.

KEEP IN MIND - You are a trigger of the disorder. That is

the nature of BPD! Your presence may inadvertently be making the partner with BPD worse, as folks with BPD tend to relive earlier traumas through their significant others, alternating between feelings of extreme emotional suffocation,

and extreme isolation. You may also find that your BPD partner may leave you suddenly, and for no apparent reason, due to the stress of struggling between “being too close,” and fear of abandonment.

FEAR - that your BPD partner might commit suicide if you leave.

You are not responsible for another person’s behaviors. Some people with BPD use the threat of suicide to prevent their biggest fear abandonment. Your partner may hurt himself in other ways - “selfmutilation,” is a common trait in BPD, wherein the distressed person cuts or otherwise mutilates his/her body in an effort to escape inner pain.

Even if it takes many attempts to leave, always have an exit plan.

2020 General Election

ENDORSEMENTS Many have called this year’s election the most important in our lifetime. The South Shore Press agrees. For the suburban taxpayer here on Long Island, the issues could not be more critical and the positions of the candidates more apart.

The Year 2020 was tumultuous from day one. January ushered in a viral plague from China that afflicted the entire world.

President Trump halted all travel from the Communist country and then from Europe as infected travelers poured into our country. His opponent, Joe Biden, called him xenophobic and criticized the move.

Members of his party such as House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and New York Mayor Bill DeBlasio urged people to ignore the threat and come visit Chinatown and other places where the virus was easily spread.

While the President took unprecedented actions to stave off the pandemic, his opponents, which include the mainstream media and the entire Washington establishment, took potshots at him at every turn. Rather than work together to save human lives, they set out to use the COVID virus to their political advantage and that is a disgrace.

Joe Biden and his party are on the wrong side of these issues and have fanned the flames to make matters worse. On these two issues alone, he does not deserve to be president of the United States. But there’s more: As the election unfolds, details of how Biden and his family cashed in on his position as senator and vice president are emerging. Wherever Joe Biden was involved, it seems, his family made millions of dollars. Despite the efforts of his party and the mainstream media to sweep this selling of his public office under the rug, we have learned that Biden’s brother received

Now, a laptop appears with grotesque pictures of Hunter Biden and emails that apparently tie the Vice President to the global money shakedown scheme and instead of

investigating, the major media outlets call it “Russian Disinformation.”

Libertarian candidate Jo Jorgensen is also on the presidential ballot in New York State.

It’s obvious that the Washington swamp will do anything to assume power. And it’s quite obvious that we can’t let that happen. To keep America from falling into the hands of the power elite and leftists trying to take over our government, The South Shore Press endorses Donald J. Trump for reelection as President of the United States.

NY STATE SENATE DISTRICT 1

Anthony Palumbo

Senator Ken LaValle has been an icon in state government for more than 40 years and has retired. We need to elect a worthy successor. Tony Palumbo has served admirably in the state assembly and has earned the endorsement of LaValle himself. True to his roots as a prosecutor in the Suffolk District Attorney’s office, Palumbo has fought to repeal the new bail laws and rails against the defund the police lunacy.

Congressman Lee Zeldin is seeking his fourth term as our representative in Washington. He stood with the President in stopping international flights to stem the spread of the Coronavirus and has been a loud voice in making sure our government does everything possible to keep us safe.

He rejects defund the police and is in favor of a strong border to not only stop illegal aliens from flooding into our country, but also the movement of drugs, human traffickers and even the virus itself from crossing the border.

As a supporter of the President, Zeldin was able win $2 billion for a new Ion Collider at Brookhaven National Lab. This is an unprecedented shot in the arm for our local economy and most likely would not have happened if we had a Trump-bashing Democrat in the seat instead of Lee Zeldin. The Congressman delivered money to protect the mainland from flooding by restoring the Outer Beach and has been a Godsend to our veterans in delivering services since he is a veteran himself.

His opponent’s party did not support

Trump’s reform of the VA hospitals or any of his initiatives to help the middle class and boost our economy.

Zeldin’s opponent, a scientist at Stony Brook University, is running on her party’s criticism of Trump’s COVID response and accusing the congressman, who has a wife and twin daughters, of being against women.

Nancy Goroff will toe her party’s line, which has been a disaster for Long Island and our suburban lifestyle. We endorse Congressman Lee Zeldin for reelection to his fourth term.

Coming from the agricultural East End, Palumbo will continue LaValle’s legacy of protecting our environment and keeping the local economy alive. He has spoken out on cutting local businesses a break during the COVID crisis and will use his law enforcement background to target Albany corruption.

Again, the mayors and governors of these cities—all aligned with Joe Biden—refused to intervene and even supported a bizarre movement to “Defund the Police.”

NY CONGRESSIONAL DISTRICT 1

In May, the nation was horrified when they watched the video of George Floyd being killed by a police officer in Minneapolis. His death renewed the debate over racism in America and touched off protests and riots in many major cities. People who were locked down in their homes with an economy put on ice by their elected leaders, watched those same politicians look the other way while anarchists and looters burned businesses

Unfortunately, Ahearn will be part of the Democrat powerbase that is dominated by the New York City interests. We need someone who will stand up to the powers that take advantage of the suburbs, and endorse Tony Palumbo for the state senate.

The Second Senatorial District is represented by former Suffolk Legislator Monica Martinez who was part of a Democrat surge in 2018 that took over the upper house. While having a member of the majority representing the area is a plus, Martinez still toes her party’s line which, in state government, favors New York City interests over the suburbs. This was apparent with the elimination of the Star rebate checks and changes to the bail laws that caused an uptick in crime across the state. Running to

With both her son and husband serving as police officers, Weik supports law enforcement and rejects the defund the police movement, something Martinez is reluctant to do. She is campaigning on reestablishing the Star rebates and is more in tune with our suburban issues.

She speaks out against the hypocrisy of locking down state residents and destroying the economy while allowing rioter and looters to run free.

Both houses of the legislature and every statewide office is held by the Democrats and their priority is the city voters who keep them in power. At least one branch of state government should be held by the opposing party if Long Island is to have a proper place at the table. Alexis Weik is part of an effort to take back the senate and has already shown herself as a capable elected official with our local interests at heart.

NY STATE ASSEMBLY DISTRICT 1

Assemblyman Fred Thiele has been a fixture in his East End District since serving as Southampton Town attorney in 1982, along with terms as town supervisor and Suffolk legislator.

He’s been an assemblyman since 1995 and caucuses with the Democrats as an independent, which is to say that it

doesn’t matter what party he runs with, he will win. Fred knows his South Fork district better than anyone and has the respect of his constituents and his fellow elected leaders. His opponent is the unknown Heather Collins.

Realizing the race against the popular incumbent is futile, Collins runs as a

perennial candidate having opposed Thiele in 2014 and 2016. She’s not actively campaigning and it’s difficult to find much information about her. Fred Thiele has been a constant and tireless advocate for the people of his district and we endorse him for reelection.

NY STATE ASSEMBLY DISTRICT 2

Jodi Giglio

Everyone knows that if you have an issue, you can “Go to Joe.” Assemblyman DeStefano has had a stellar career as a public servant, many years of which has been as a volunteer.

He’s served in Medford’s fire and ambulance companies for 40 years and is a department commissioner.

He worked in the Suffolk Sheriff’s office for 27 years and we know we can count on him to reject the liberal policies that threaten our safety.

He is at the forefront of the campaign for a Constitutional Amendment to help weed out Albany corruption and the pay-to-play culture of state politics. He is well known for his office’s constituent services, especially during the Coronavirus pandemic.

Libertarian candidate Adam Martin is also running for this assembly seat.

DeStefano’s opponents’ records do not come close to Joe’s decadeslong record of community service and concern for his neighbors. While he means well, Steve Polgar doesn’t have anywhere near the knowledge of this district and commitment to serve as Joe. He will be just another vote for the state Democrats. Therefore, we endorse Joe DeStefano for reelection to his second term in the state assembly.

The race to succeed Assemblyman Tony Palumbo as he runs for the state senate pits two Riverhead Town Board veterans against each other. Town Councilwoman Jodi Giglio is running a spirited campaign to hold off former town supervisor Laura Jens-Smith.

While both are intelligent, hardworking candidates, Giglio came out hard to save local businesses from

the COVID closure, especially those on the East End that rely on tourism.

She’s campaigning to reinstate the Star Rebate checks and repeal the new bail laws. She rejects defund the police.

Jens-Smith’s biggest drawback is her association with a Democrat Party that stands firmly against all of this.

While she may be inclined to buck her party on some issues, she won’t make a dent in a state political hierarchy that does not have the local interests of this North Fork district at heart. Steve Englebright has been another long-running assembly member and it would be hard to think about replacing him. On the faculty of Stony Brook University, Englebright has an esteemed record of environmental preservation and was a driving force in

protecting the Pine Barrens and Long Island’s underground drinking water supply. His opponent, attorney Michael Ross, is laying pretty low, and although we wouldn’t mind one less Democrat in the Assembly, it shouldn’t be at the expense of Steve Englebright, who we

The death of Tom Muratore created a vacancy in the Suffolk Legislature that will be decided in a special election November 3rd. Tom was a devoted advocate of the people of the 4th District and it will be tough for anyone to follow as successfully in his footsteps. Someone we expect will rise to the occasion is Nick Caracappa, who’s mother, Rose Caracappa was a Conservative legend in the seat.

A Suffolk Water Authority maintenance worker for 34 years, Nick was president of Local 393 Utility Workers Union of America and served on the Middle Country school board for seven years. He is focused on increasing revenue streams rather than cutting county services such as law enforcement or raising taxes. With his familiarity with the water authority, he’s devoted to protecting our drinking

water supply. Nick’s opponent, Joseph Turdik, has worked at the Suffolk Board of Elections for the last 10 years. He’s run for the seat twice already and is not expected to make much of a race of it.

Nick Caracappa will uphold the legacy of Tom Muratore, his mother and his brother, Joe Caracappa, who has also held the seat. We endorse Nick.
