Legislator Nick Caracappa’s “Freedom Rally” a Huge Success

This past weekend, Suffolk County Legislator Nick Caracappa hosted a “Rally for Freedom” event in Selden to support the essential workers in healthcare, education and other professions who are at risk of losing their jobs for choosing not to be vaccinated against COVID-19. Over 250

people were in attendance, and testimony was given by teachers, nurses, first responders, elected officials including NYS Senator Mario Mattera, NYS Assembly members Doug Smith, Jodi Giglio and Joe DeStefano, along with those who lost loved ones from COVID-19.

The goal was to implore Governor Hochul to listen to our communities and try to find some middle ground so that people don’t lose their jobs as a result of these restrictive mandates.

“New Yorkers, particularly those in Suffolk County and within my district, have worked hard to keep us safe during COVID by risking their lives and putting their families second for those who needed them,” explained Legislator Caracappa. “Now, they feel deserted and desperate to have a voice. I want them to know that I am here to listen and stand with them against these irresponsible, unjustified and

Suffolk Legislator Leslie Kennedy Running for Re-Election

By Barbara LaMonica Suffolk County 12th District Legislator Leslie Kennedy is seeking re-election next month, and will appear on the Republican and Conservative lines of the ballot. Kennedy's Democrat opponent, Michael Siderakis, a 28-year retired New York State Trooper, is not running an active campaign, according to party officials.

Kennedy was first elected to the County Legislature during a special election in March 2015 with a wealth of experience on her resume. Prior to winning her inaugural election in 2015, Kennedy had racked up 13 years of experience as a Legislative Aide, first to former Legislator Donald Blydenburgh, then subsequently to her husband,

former Legislator John Kennedy, until he was elected Suffolk County Comptroller.

Following her March 2015 win, Leslie Kennedy ran for re-election eight months later in the November election, and has since been winning consecutive terms.

On the docket for Kennedy's next term if she wins re-election is protecting the taxpayers, preserving Long Island's environment, responsibly maintaining County finances and the budget, and keeping her constituent base and residents throughout Suffolk County safe. "I'm going to continue doing exactly what we have been doing," Kennedy said. "I'm going to continue reaching across party lines for the overall betterment of our

constituents."

The awards Kennedy has received for her record of constituent service are, perhaps, a testament to her service on the Legislature.

She has been recognized by the Suffolk County Police Department Hispanic Society for her work with law enforcement. Kennedy was named a Woman of Distinction by New York State Senate Majority Leader John Flanagan for her work with constituents, and the Great

South Bay Republican Club named Kennedy their Woman of the Year acknowledging her work with civic organizations.

She is further decorated by the Suffolk County Women's Club in recognition of her work on women's issues and with Parents for Megan's Law. "Advocating for people is what I'm best at," Kennedy said.

Asked if she is confident she will win re-election, Kennedy said, "I'm never really confident because I don't take anything for granted, but I think the people know and see what I do for them; I'm a seven day a week worker and I'm more than a full time worker," Kennedy said.

"I'm blessed to be able to serve the people of Suffolk County every single day."

Forging Ahead with Construction of the Forge River Watershed Sewer District

Suffolk County Legislator Jim Mazzarella recently announced that Suffolk County has received approval from the Office of the State Comptroller to establish the long-awaited Forge River Watershed Sewer District, with construction to begin this fall.

The historic project will connect roughly 1,889 homes to a state-ofthe-art sewage treatment facility, eliminating thousands of outdated cesspools and septic systems which contribute to the nitrogen pollution in the Forge River and the Narrows Bay. Approximately 150 business properties will also be able to connect to the sewer system.

William Floyd High School Freshman Places Second in Eastern States Championship Race Country Championship, the Suffolk County Class A Girls Cross Country Championship and earned the Suffolk County Female Runner of the Year honors. She was also named one of the “Top 25” cross country runners for the fall of 2021 by Newsday. In September, she won -- for the second time -- the annual Smith Point Bridge 5K Run for Literacy race. Macchia also continues to excel in her academics and is involved in various extracurricular activities involving math, science, art

Zariel Macchia Zariel Macchia, a ninth grader at William Floyd High School, is at it again – accomplishing great feats in the high school running world. This past weekend, against a talented field of nationally-ranked athletes including two Olympic Trial qualifiers, Zariel placed second in the Eastern States Championship Race at the Manhattan College High School Invitational with a time of 14:33.6 in the 2.5-mile

finals held at the fabled Van Cortlandt Park, perhaps the most famous cross country course in the world.

“Words cannot describe how incredible her performance was,” said head coach John Ryan. “She is truly one of a kind.”

Macchia continues to rack up the accolades. As an eighth grader in the spring 2021 season, she won the Suffolk County Division I Girls’ Cross

and photography.

Along with her teammates, Macchia is now gearing up for the Division Championship race on October 26, the State Qualifiers on November 5 and the State Championships on November 13.

On Wednesday, October 13, 2021, Colonial Community Volunteer Corps (CCVC), a program under the Colonial

Youth & Family Services agency, hosted an award ceremony for its avid, dedicated, devoted volunteers at the Knights of Columbus in Mastic. This event is the program’s way of showing

Town Dedicates Shirley Lane in Gordon Heights in Honor of Pastor Fannie and Bishop Silas Coleman On October 8, Supervisor Ed Romaine and Councilman Michael Loguercio were on hand to dedicate Shirley Lane in Gordon Heights in honor of Pastor Fannie and Bishop Silas Coleman. The street dedication recognizes their longtime affiliation with several local churches and their many years of service to the Gordon Heights community.

Pastor Fannie and Bishop Silas Coleman were well-known throughout the communities of Gordon Heights, Coram, and Medford. In Gordon Heights, the Colemans would often hold Sunday morning prayer meetings

at the “Old Gordon Heights Park” with their congregation. Every Sunday, Pastor Fannie would go to the Woodhaven Nursing Home to volunteer. She sang to the residents, played instruments and read scripture to the staff.

Pastor Fannie would also visit the Yaphank and Riverhead correctional facilities to speak to those incarcerated and pray for them and their families.

Supervisor Romaine said, “Pastor Fannie and Bishop Silas Coleman were a source of strength and inspiration in the community for many years. By renaming this street in their honor, we provide

a lasting memorial to the the love and spirituality that they shared with the residents of Gordon Heights.”

Councilman Loguercio said, "When reading the history and community sentiments about Pastor Fannie and Bishop Silas, I was moved by their extensive dedication to their faith, as well as to their communities. For decades they dedicated their lives to volunteer and missionary work, while offering prayer and guidance to all those they spoke with. As one of her family members said to me, she didn't just raise a family, she raised a community."

SUFFOLK CLOSEUP

BY KARL GROSSMAN The contest for district attorney is the leading race in Suffolk County this year.

In a county with a long record of governmental corruption and with such major criminal issues as illegal drug dealing and in recent years the murderous activities of the MS-13 gang, the position of DA is highly important—indeed, some in Suffolk politics have termed it the most important position in all of county government.

This year running on the Democratic ticket for DA is the incumbent, Timothy Sini of Babylon, who was elected DA in 2017 and took office in 2018. He is opposed

by Raymond Tierney who is running on the Republican and Conservative lines.

Mr. Tierney has engaged in a highly aggressive challenge to Mr. Sini.

“DA Tim Sini Has Devoted His Career to Protecting the Safety of Suffolk County,” declares a flier for Mr. Sini, previously the commissioner of the Suffolk County Police Department. “Tim has a track record of fearless prosecutions & historic accomplishments.”

Not true, Mr. Tierney holds. His campaign literature describes Mr. Sini as “soft on crime, weak on corruption.”

Mr. Tierney for 13 years was an assistant Suffolk DA, then a prosecutor in the U.S.

said the Suffolk DA’s office was part of an investigation that utilized “200 wiretaps” and led to 96 arrests in Suffolk in 2019.

Mr. Tierney has lambasted Mr. Sini for being more about appearance than being a hard-hitting prosecutor. He has accused the incumbent of being more concerned with “press releases and splashy press conferences” with “no follow-up,” as he stated in a webinar last month organized

by Long Island Metro Business Action (LIMBA).

In the webinar, he specifically claimed Mr. Sini was a “complete failure” in the case of Justin Smith of Smithtown charged with selling fentanyl-laced drugs resulting in overdose deaths on the East End in August. Mr. Tierney said Mr. Sini had opportunities to indict Mr. Smith earlier on drug charges but didn’t. He made a similar allegation of lack of early prosecution regarding Darren Mansfield of Bay Shore later to allegedly murder a 22-year-old Dix Hills woman.

Mr. Sini in his appearance in a LIMBA webinar, two weeks later, said: “He’s just lying about these cases.”

In his presentation, Mr. Sini said “crime is going down” in Suffolk County, spoke of his office having “invested

His campaign biography says: “Much of his career was devoted to the trial and conviction of numerous members of the MS-13 street gang for the commission of murders and other violent crimes on Long Island. He drafted and applied for search and arrest warrants, presented evidence to grand juries…and conducted jury trials and sentencing hearings putting hundreds of dangerous MS-13 members behind bars.”

Also, it says, he “met with Department of Justice officials regarding long-term international criminal prosecutions, and briefed the Attorney General and President on the status of MS-13 prosecutions both nationwide and in New York.”

In the webinar, Mr. Tierney related that he “grew up” in Commack and now lives with his family “in the Town of Brookhaven.” When I asked for this column about which community in Brookhaven Town, Mr. Tierney said he didn’t want to identify it “because of threats.”

BY TOM BARTON The New York Islanders have something this season that they haven't had in a while here on the Island ... expectations.

The Isles opened up the season with odds of 19 to 1, which is good for 7th shortest odds in the entire league. They also opened up as +275 favorites to win the Metropolitan Division and minus 350 to make the playoffs is the 5th shortest odds for any team to make it to the postseason.

Vegas and sports books around the country have labeled the Isles a true contender and it's easy to see why. This team

took the eventual champions (Tampa Bay) to a Game 7 in the semifinals last year and lost by a single goal, they also played without their captain Anders Lee for their playoff run and have a good core coming back.

You have to be excited about this coach and goaltender, and while the entire league seems to be playing a fast paced, high scoring style, New York plays methodical and direct, which is playoff style hockey.

So can this young core handle success? That seems to be the prevailing question this season.

In this still young fantasy football season a number of disappointments have become noticeable. How in the world is a Pete Carroll coached team dead last in the league in allowing yards?

The Seattle Seahawks have allowed an unbelievable 450.8 yards per game this year. Though this was not expected to be a top defensive unit before the season started, it stands out that they have allowed the most yardage this year.

The Los Angeles Rams were expected to be a top unit this year. They are 23rd in the league in allowing yardage.

The Washington football team was expected to be a top unit this season yet they find themselves ranked as the 27th unit in regards to allowing yardage.

Washington’s Chase Young has 1 sack through 5 weeks of the season. Yikes!!

This guy was supposed to be one of the highest impact defenders by this point in his career. This was one of the highest drafted IDP’s in one of my fantasy leagues.

It would appear that the Philadelphia Eagles are throwing in the towel in this still young season. In the middle of Week #6, the Arizona Cardinals added TE Zach Ertz in a trade between Philadelphia and Arizona. Arizona’s offense likes to attack in the middle

How Far the (Saints) Isles Have Come everyone, and the underdog is an entirely different feel than when you have the bullseye on your back. Lee is back and should help stabilize the young team, but this will all be about their coaching and leadership. Believing in what Barry Trotz is selling will be the difference between another deep playoff run, or failing to meet expectations.

Islanders fans have every reason to be optimistic this season and it seems that odds makers across the country agree.

A big disappointment after an outstanding first week has been TET.J. Hockenson who has quieted down after 97 receiving yards in the first week of the season. He came out hot, becoming the first Lions tight end to record eight receptions in consecutive contests. However, since then, he hasn't caught more than four receptions in any game. Hockenson does not lack focus and is supremely confident in his ability. He wants to be in there as a 3-down tight end and I would play him here in Week #6. He should get back to catching 8 passes per game real soon. I added him in a few DFS contests this week.

The Russell Wilson injury is extremely disappointing not just to the teams that drafted him to be their quarterback, but DK Metcalf and Tyler

Lockett owners are equally dismayed.

Backup QB Geno Smith is arguably one of the more capable backup QB’s in football, but Russell Wilson is one of the best deep passers in the league and is deadly accurate. There is no way that Geno Smith can hope to replace Wilson. This will impact both Metcalf and Lockett. I would avoid them in my DFS lineups unless I see a weak pass defense against them in a given week.

The Jon Gruden resignation is sad and regretful from a human being standpoint as Gruden has probably ended his career as a head coach in the NFL and probably no colleges will touch him either. It would also seem improbable for him to find work as an analyst as well, but QB Derek Carr was already in a slide backwards. The change of play caller will also have an impact and in Week 6 he is suiting

Dalvin Cook has been a huge disappointment in fantasy as well as DFS this season. At a price tag of $8,800 on Fan Duel every week it is very difficult to play him as he seems richly priced while hobbled with a bad ankle and did not play in Week 5 and was also sat for Week 3. (2) missed games in most leagues that compile total rushing yards is just about the limit that teams can comfortably push so Cook is at his limit. He did put in a full practice on the Thursday before his Week 6 game, but at $8,800 that is a high risk and could cost you in any contests you enter him in.

One quick word about the playoffs in baseball. Gavin Lux is really shining with the spotlight on him and is having a fantastic post season. He may have finally turned the corner and begun to live up to his press clippings as Baseball America’s 2019 Minor League Player of the Year.

Veterans and service members who are not near a base may feel isolated and need greater local

Pray for veterans, service members and the military chaplains who minister to them on bases at home and abroad.

7. Draw a 10- to 15- mile circle

around your House of Worship and locate the veterans and members of the military that love them and can help.

When a service member is deployed, send letters and care

As was stated in the previous article most of those, both military and veterans that are suicidal suffer from moral injury. It is extremely important to realize that moral injury is not a medical problem, but as spiritual problem that can be best treated by the clergy. Thus our military and veterans living here need our help.

Veterans can be of great help to the Houses of Worship by joining the meetings and helping the other veterans that are there for help.

ENDORSEMENTS SUFFOLK COUNTY DISTRICT ATTORNEY

Tim Sini

Both the incumbent, Timothy D. Sini, and the challenger, Ray Tierney, have remarkable resumes and records. Sini was elected to the District Attorney’s Office in November 2017. Tierney is currently employed

by Suffolk County off-Track Betting where he was appointed to serve as its chief council for compliance and enforcement.

Since taking office January 1, 2018, Sini conducted a comprehensive review and overhaul of the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office in an effort to restore integrity to the Office of the District Attorney and to create a culture of excellence, compliance and ethical conduct in its day-to-day operations. Sini proceeded to recruit top talent, and fired employees when necessary.

In his bid for re-election, Sini vows to continue his work to address the drug epidemic, eradicate violent street gangs, and combat environment crimes which he says pose a threat to the environment and Long Island's sole source aquifer.

Prior to his election to the office of Suffolk County District Attorney, Sini was a federal prosecutor and served as Suffolk County's 13th Police Commissioner. As a federal prosecutor,

Sini prosecuted drug dealers, gang members and murderers. As Suffolk County Police Commissioner, Sini worked to keep the streets of Suffolk County safer by combating MS-13 gang members, human traffickers, and held drug dealers accountable.

Tierney is conducting an active campaign in his plight to win the District Attorney’s race, and also has an impressive resume. Tierney is running his campaign based on his wealth of experience and says he wants to bring ethics and accountability to the District Attorney’s Office.

Tierney asserts he has a zero tolerance for bail and parole violators, and like District Attorney Sini, will work to repeal New York State's failed bail reform.

Tierney was a prosecutor who has dedicated his career to fighting for victims and protecting citizens.

He worked to put MS-13 gang members behind bars, and prosecuted Colombian drug cartel cases, as well as MS-13 racketeering cases. In his pursuit for District Attorney, Tierney says he wants to reestablish the District Attorney’s Gang Unit and Suffolk County's Gang Task Force. His plans, if elected, are to expand the DA's White Collar Crimes Bureau to combat

identity theft and cyber-crime abuse.

Tierney is a former Assistant District Attorney where he served under former District Attorney James Catterson before leaving to enter a private law practice. Tierney would later return as an Assistant District Attorney and than exist the DA's office for a second time for an 11-year tenure as an ADA in the US Attorney’s Office in the Eastern District of New York.

Although running on the Republican and Conservative lines, Tierney is not affiliated with a party.

On November 2, and in early voting, the residents of Suffolk County will be asked to make their choice for Suffolk County District Attorney.

It is important that every qualified voter exercise his or her right to vote and have their voices heard. Clearly changes by Democrat controlled Albany with issues like bail reform have given criminals an unprecedented control of our communities. Repeat offenders are often let go and continue to perpetrate crimes. These Democrat policies jeopardize public safety and must be changed.

It is because of the need for change and his history of being removed from politics that The South Shore Press endorses Ray Tierney.

Dr. Errol Toulon, Jr. is seeking re-election to serve a second fouryear term as Suffolk County's highest ranking law enforcement official.

South Shore Press is proud to endorse the incumbent for Suffolk County Sheriff. Republican Challenger William Amato could not be reached for an interview.

Toulon's credentials are as impressive as they are impeccable. He comes armed with over 30 years of criminal justice and law enforcement experience, and was elected at a point when there was no time for a learning curve. Prior to his election as Suffolk County Sheriff, Toulon worked for 25 years on Rikers Island, 22 of those years serving as Deputy Commissioner of Operations. Toulon is certified through the Department of Homeland Security in Emergency Planning, Radiological Emergency Management, Incident Response in Terrorist bombing, and State Disaster Management.

Since his inaugural election victory in 2017 and officially taking the helm in January 2018, Toulon went right to work initiating a restructuring of the department in the areas of the Intelligence Bureau, and implemented strategies to stem the tide of gang violence, human trafficking, violent crimes and battling the opioid epidemic.

Toulon is visible within communities throughout Suffolk County from visiting schools as a role model for our youth, to working with the District Attorney’s Office, Suffolk County Police and virtually all arms of law enforcement, civic organizations and community groups in an effort to create a safer Suffolk County. Toulon acknowledges the men and women who comprise the Sheriff's Department, and admirably so. South Shore Press gives a respectful nod to these individuals AND to Sheriff Toulon for the work they do each and every day, 24 hours

a day, seven days a week, noting there are no holidays where everyone in this department can take the day to celebrate in the comfort of their homes with their families. Case in point, Toulon's office created the Sheriff's Transition and Reentry Team (START), to assist inmates and the formerly incarcerated with transitioning into the community.

The results? Since Toulon took office in 2018, the number of inmates in the Suffolk County Jail has decreased from 1,350 to an estimated 750. This is a round-the-clock effort.

As he looks ahead to serving the people of Suffolk County for four more years, Toulon is focused on making communities safer for all Suffolk residents, and working in a bipartisan manner with law enforcement for the overall betterment of the County.

Krupski's record, which reflects his tireless efforts to ensure a continuous quality of life for residents throughout the County, his environmental knowledge and firsthand farming experience, his

high prioritization of environmental preservation, and budgetary experience, has earned him the endorsement of South Shore Press. Krupski's environmental record spans every corner of the County 's largest LD from farmlands to the delicate coastline and wetlands. It is the position to South Shore Press that the residents and business owners of the environmentally sensitive North Fork and Suffolk County as a whole, deserve two more years of

the level of governmental tenacity and experience that Krupski has proven he can continue to deliver.

Unfortunately, Bell did not return attempts to reach him for an interview, which raises the serious question of whether he is running a sincere campaign.

This is an important year for qualified residents to turn out to exercise their right to vote.

When residents in Suffolk County's 2nd Legislative District head to the polls November 2, or to cast their ballots in early voting in October, they will be asked to choose between Democrat incumbent Legislator Bridget Fleming and Republican challenger, Robert J. Carpenter III, to represent them as their voice in Suffolk County government.

Kara Hahn

Suffolk County Democrat Legislator and Deputy Presiding Officer Kara Hahn is asking constituents of the 5th Legislative District to return her for another two year term. Also running for the seat is Republican challenger Salvatore S. B. Isabella. South Shore Press endorses Hahn for reelection.

Unfortunately, Isabella did not respond to several attempts for an interview with South Shore Press that would have given constituents an opportunity to learn more about his candidacy.

Suffolk County Legislature, Hahn has either supported or taken the lead on numerous initiatives spanning public health, the economy, environmental issues, veterans, and most recently, the county's battle to put a lid on the opioid epidemic while in the middle of a pandemic. Ensuring revenues which the County was awarded from lawsuits against pharmaceuticals are appropriately directed towards education and rehabilitation for individuals who have fallen victim to opioid and substance abuse is paramount on Hahn's agenda of

priorities. Hahn is committed and dedicated to combating this crisis because, as she stated, losing just one victim to an opioid overdose is one death too many.

While Hahn has her immediate sights set on winning the November 2021 County election, this endorsement would be disingenuous if South Shore Press did not acknowledge her pursuit for election to the First Congressional District in November 2022.

He supports the concept of, and will push hard to pass, legislation that would give preference for the County to employ local labor and small businesses in order to sustain local communities. Caracappa says the County awards millions of dollars in contracts to out of state businesses, and that issuing contracts to local labor will create jobs, increase employment and

bolster Suffolk's economy.

While Sharrock says she will focus on union jobs and growing apprenticeships as among her priorities, Caracappa possesses that experience necessary at a critical junction when there is no time for a learning curve as we try to navigate out of this devastating pandemic. It is admirable that Sharrock is serving her second term on the Middle Country School Board and chairs its Legislative Committee, however, Caracappa is a proven leader who is passionate and committed to continuing to serve the people and businesses of Brookhaven.

Lent's Administration has, indeed, turned operations in the office green, and as the incumbent so transparently acknowledges, there's more work to be done. As we know, conversions from paper record-keeping to a digitally-based system not only costs money, but it requires expertise to ensure organization moving forward, and that is precisely what the Office of the Town Clerk is accomplishing under the Lent Administration.

BY DOMINICK FORTE The existence of the devil is acknowledged in the majority of the world’s religions. In modern biblical translations the devil is the adversary of God and God’s people. The Old Testament book of Isaiah says “How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! How art thou cut down to the ground which did weaken the nations.”

Lucifer was the most beautiful, most luminous, most intelligent, and mightiest of all the Archangels. The name Satan has become the most common name attributed to him. In Hebrew, the term “satan” translates into “adversary” which is the way in which Lucifer is presented in Biblical literature.

In the Old Testament, in Biblical literature, and in

theological lore Lucifer is portrayed as a tempter and seducer. In the New Testament and works relating to it Jesus identifies him as the devil numerous times.

Biblical scholars look to chapter 12 of the Book of Revelation and agree that Lucifer led a revolt of 1/3 of all the angels against God. Here he is depicted as a huge red dragon with seven heads and ten horns. The reasons given for his treason focus on his pride overtaking his reason and his demand to be revered as an equal to God. Lucifer, also known as The Prince of Darkness, gathered his contingency of fallen angels and confronted God demanding to be set above the other archangels and to receive

to supplant God but to have Him recognize his superiority over his brother archangels.

But God sent his loyal angels into battle against the rebellious insurgent and the war ended in Michael and his bother archangels casting Satan and his followers down into hell. When Lucifer was cast out of heaven, the iron gates of the nine layers of the abyss were opened and waiting for the fallen Satan and those he duped into following him.

In the Old Testament Satan is only mentioned in a handful of instances. In his first and most important appearance to humankind he encounters Eve in the Garden of Eden. Here Lucifer either transformed himself into a serpent or gained control over one to tempt her

to disobey God and partake of the fruit of the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil.

(By the way the word “apple” is never mentioned.) The temptation was successful and began the tragedy of the fall of humankind and his sinful existence on earth.

Lucifer’s attempts to sway those from God’s will are thwarted by humankind’s faith, prayers, and the devotion to God and his saints. Lucifer has an axe to grind with God over his expulsion from heaven. He is obsessed with leading God’s faithful into temptation. His greatest strength is his ability to deceive and present evil in a pleasurable light. Humankind’s greatest weakness is not being able to recognize him in his deceit.

Barbara and Scott had five children Scott (Denise) of Bellport, New York, James (Julie) of Islandia, New York , Margaret Jeffrey-Deos (Tony) of Manorville, New York , Janine Jeffrey-Towle (Fred) of Shirley, New York and Donald – her favorite son lol…(Pam) of Port Richey , Florida.

Barbara Ann Jeffrey (L’Hommedieu), 90, of Shirley passed away on September 12, 2021 at Long Island Community Hospital in Patchogue, New York after a battle with Alzheimer’s. She was born May 26, 1931 in Huntington, New York to Robert and Elsie L’Hommedieu. She had three siblings who all predeceased her: Elizabeth Johannesen, David L’Hommedieu and Bruce L’Hommedieu.

Barbara also, had eighteen great-grandchildren who were the joy of her life: Madison, Mackenzie, Morgan, Dylan, Cameron, Ashley, James, Chase, Bella, Eila, Owen, Maeve, Payton, Libby, Addison, Scarlett, Hunter and Brielle.

She was also Aunt to John, Cindy, Bobby, Jeff, Bruce, Michael, Danny, Pattyann, Michelle and Bruce Jr..

She married Oliver “Scott” William Jeffrey on February 14, 1955 who predeceased her in 2001.

siblings because her mother died when she was 12 years old and her brothers, being 7 and 5 years of age, she helped her father raise them. She worked as a telephone operator for the New York Telephone Company until 1956 when she had her first son Scott. A year and 21 days later she had her son James and then a year and three months later she had her daughter Margaret. Seven years later she had her daughter Janine and then five years later had her son Donald.

She loved cooking for her family. You could always count on a great breakfast, home cooked dinners and dessert afterwards. She was known for her great roasted chicken and roast beef dinners, grilled cheese sandwiches, cheese omelets, casserole, apple turnovers, brownies and Christmas cookies.

She loved sharing her recipes with her family and showing them how to prepare the dishes. Of course it seemed to never taste like hers but we always tried. Barbara favorite holiday was Christmas she loved decorating the house and cooking and baking for everyone. She enjoyed cooking, reading, gardening, doing puzzles and most of all being with her family. Barbara loved to get her hair done and nails done with her daughter Janine. She loved going shopping and traveling with Janine and her family. When she was in Florida she enjoyed going to Disney and Cape Canaveral Space Center with Donald and his family. She loved being outside and going for walks. Barbara especially loved to go see her grandson Matthew to watch him play baseball.

She also enjoyed telling him stories of the past and enjoyed the times he would have grandma days and take her to lunch. She would iron everything in sight and even for special occasions family

members would drop off things for her to iron their clothes for them. She loved every minute of it.

She also enjoyed when she would watch her great grandchildren Madison, Mackanzie and Morgan.

We still don’t know who was watching who lol… but most of all, she loved being with her family.

Family and friends gathered together to mourn her loss at Alexander Rothwell in Wading River on September 16, and she was buried on September 17, at Mount Pleasant Cemetery in Center Moriches, New York.

She will be greatly missed by everyone that knew her. She always had a great smile and enjoyed serving who ever entered the house. She was a great mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She is now fitted with the biggest and fanciest angel wings and of course they will have diamonds all over them. She is now in heaven looking down watching over her family and those who loved her, holding Scott’s hand and saying “Look at what we created.” The large family we always wanted and now we must watch them each build their own families adding on to ours.

Mom & Dad you are loved and will be in our hearts forever. You live within all of us. Thank you for your love, guidance and for always being there to listen and pick us up when we needed it. Most of all letting us know we were loved. Your legacies will live on within your children, grandchildren and great- grandchildren and so on.

Mount Pleasant Cemetery, a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit, located on the north side of Montauk Highway, just west of Kalers Pond (Mill Pond) in Center Moriches, New York, has been serving the community for 140 years. This cemetery offers a full range of services, including graveside military services and options including cremations, burial plots, an onsite chapel and viewing room, a varied selection of niches in one of the columbarium. Mount Pleasant Cemetery has received the world wide honorable mention ACE Award for its beauty and ability to look into the future, make significant positive changes and have an active role in the community.

The cemetery was created in 1879 when a small group of community members held a meeting at the Ketcham Hotel.

The Mount Pleasant Cemetery Association was established, with Mr. John Scudder Haven elected as the first president of the board of trustees. In the weeks that followed a parcel of land (8 acres) owned by Mr. J.S. Kaler was purchased. Then two years later, in 1881 Mount Pleasant Cemetery acquired the adjacent Presbyterian Cemetery. Through the years, Mount Pleasant was able to acquire other neighboring properties that makeup the beautiful, 37 acre park like setting of today.

Mount Pleasant Cemetery has grown in size and has undergone a thorough restoration and modernization. The landscape is in continual upkeep to create the seasons of beauty. The record keeping and office procedures have all been computerized. A beautiful chapel, a new workshop and large storage area have been added. Recently, several beautiful granite columbarium have been erected that contain glass niches inside and granite niches outside to hold your love one’s urn. New equipment and tools have been purchased for the maintenance and security of the grounds and upkeep of the crematory. The crematory has a unique, patented, cremation tool called, ‘Clean Sweep’ that uses air for sweeping in the cremation process.

This tool enables the staff to take extra care in collecting the cremated remains of your loved one. This tool and the process was invented by the staff at Mount Pleasant Cemetery and it is now being used across the country by other crematoriums.

Mount Pleasant Cemetery has an outreach relationship with the community. The staff and equipment has been used to help other neighboring cemeteries. The Wading River Cemetery needed help up righting over 40 headstones and over 50 headstones in the Brookfield Cemetery in Manorville. During the community project on Arbor Day the cemetery staff helped to plant over 100 trees along Montauk Highway. In a more recent event, cemetery staff helped in the recovery effort of TWA flight 800. The cemetery’s geographic location lent itself to the installation of a beautiful memorial for TWA Flight 800, two of the passengers from the flight are buried at the cemetery.

The other memorials located in this cemetery are dedicated to The VFW Victory Post 414 and the Center Moriches Fire Department. Whether through financial donations or hands on support the cemetery staff is also involved with the Chamber of Commerce, The Ketchum Inn, The Moriches Historical Society, the Rotary, and Independent Group Home Living.

The cemetery also supports other organizations like New Beginnings Community Care in Medford where patients who have suffered traumatic brain injuries are cared for and helped.

The Boy Scout Troop 414 and the VFW Victory Post 414 pay tribute to the Veterans every year by the placing of American flags on graves for Memorial Day and Veterans Day. At Mount Pleasant Cemetery, the involvement with the Boy Scouts, paved the way for a young man to make Eagle Scout by installing a brick patio and bench at the Veterans Memorial. Every year the Center Moriches Memorial Day parade travels down Main Street and the parade ends in the Mount Pleasant Cemetery for a ceremony sponsored by the VFW Victory Post 414.

An old cemetery, like Mt. Pleasant, is the final resting place for those who settled our area fought for our freedom and those who continued the work that has made the wonderful

community we know today. The cemetery provides opportunities to discover local history. Cemeteries document a person’s existence with birth and death dates. With the digitalization of documents becoming available today, a more detailed history of a person’s life can be found. A perfect example is the “Find A Grave” website which identifies some of the graves at Mount Pleasant with the names, dates and gravestone pictures.

One of the stories that have been discovered using information, including the digitalization of his military pension, is about Henry Ross (Rouse) (1758-1847) who enlisted as a drummer boy in the Revolutionary War. Drummers were used to communicate signals to the army. Henry served in the Massachusetts Militia stationed in Vermont and was shot in the leg during the Battle of Bennington. He was released from duty in 1783, at the end of the war. Henry has about six generations of his family buried at Mount Pleasant Cemetery.

Henry Ross’ military file shows that many relatives have applied to be a Son or Daughter of the Revolution through him. The story about the young drummer boy is only one of the hundreds of stories about the people who have been laid to rest at the Mount Pleasant Cemetery. This community cemetery has been the choice for a final resting place for its beauty, the services that are available and most of all because the cemetery staff are so helpful and compassionate.
