This year for the first time in the papers 33 year history, The South Shore Press will be making campaign endorsements. Each County/Town candidate from within Brookhaven was asked via mail to contact our office to schedule their endorsement screening.

We spent two full days interviewing candidates to find out who was best suited for public office. If a candidate failed to contact our office to schedule an appointment, than that candidate was not considered for endorsement.

Unfortunately, it appears that many Democratic candidates chose not to participate in our process and therefore could not be considered for endorsement.

In the end, the choice is yours. So on Election Day, Tuesday November 7, 2017 make sure you get out and vote.

COMMUNITY EVENTS & HAPPENINGS Volunteer Recognition On Wednesday, October 11th, 2017, an award ceremony was held at William Floyd High School for members of Colonials Community Volunteer Corps. Many dignitaries were present to thank the volunteers and present them with certificates. Several volunteers received special recognition for their efforts. Thomas Pirello, Penny Auerbach, Emily Walsh, Nicole McDonald and Isabella Coppola were recognized for giving 100 hours of volunteer time; Thomas Pirello for giving 250 hours. Volunteers are involved in many projects including, Graffiti Removal, Community Clean up, Flowers for Friends and community gardens.

After the formal ceremony, guests were invited to stay for refreshments including a delicious ice cream cake donated by the Ice Cream Cottage.

Storm Update: Guidelines for Yard Waste Pickup

With the exception of trees involving power lines, the Highway Department has cleared a vast majority of trees from Town roads following Sunday's severe weather. Any vegetative debris put to the curb must be done so in accordance with the Department of Recycling and Sustainable Materials Management guidelines for yard waste pick up. Please see the below rules on yard waste or visit the department's website at for more information.

The Town of Brookhaven has 20 curbside yard waste pickup weeks designated each year.

William Floyd NJROTC Celebrates 35th Anniversary The William Floyd High School NJROTC recently celebrated its 35th anniversary being designated as an official Naval Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps unit under the provision of the Reserve Officers’ Training Corps Vitalization Act. The William Floyd unit first began as a satellite of John Glenn High School in September 1982 before getting its own host institution provision in September 1983. Since its inception, student cadets continue to learn the values of citizenship, service to the United States, personal responsibility and a sense of accomplishment, which are instilled into them on a daily basis.

Throughout its 35-year history, it is estimated that approximately 1,500 cadets have gone through the program, with about 10 percent volunteering for military service and about one percent earning appointments to military service academies and ROTC scholarships. The William Floyd High School NJROTC is currently under the leadership of Commander Jay M. Tweed (USN/Retired), senior naval science instructor, and Senior Chief Dwight H. Becherer (USN/Retired), naval science instructor.

The William Floyd High School NJROTC has earned several accolades throughout its history including the

distinction of being named a “Distinguished Unit” two of the past three years. This honor is among the highest designations a unit can receive and is based upon superior performance and outstanding achievement in academics, competitions, cadet involvement and community service during each school year.

Over the past 11 years, the unit has earned nine “streamers” to display for various awards including the two Distinguished Unit Awards (2015 and 2017) and seven Unit Achievement Awards (2006, 2007, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013 and 2016).

William Floyd NJROTC is one of only four units on Long Island and among just 59 in Area 4, which comprises the northeastern part of the United States including New York, Connecticut, Delaware, Massachusetts, Maine, New Hampshire, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island and Vermont, as well as units in Italy and Spain.

COMPETITION IN SUFFOLK’S LEGISLATIVE RACES HEIGHTENS AS ELECTION DAY APPROACHES

Candidates - both incumbents and challengers for Suffolk County Legislative Districts are running competitive campaigns with Election Day, November 7th, 2017 on the horizon.

7th District: Suffolk County Legislator and Deputy Presiding Officer Rob Calarco, who won his inaugural bid for election to the county legislature in 2011, is seeking his fourth two-year term to continue serving constituents in the 7th Legislative District and will appear on the Democrat, Independence, and Working Family party lines. Calarco, a Patchogue Village resident, is endorsed by but not limited to the Suffolk County Police Conference and county law police unions, Association of Municipal Employees, Suffolk County Corrections Officers, Suffolk County Deputy Sheriffs, CSEA, LI Federation of Labor, NY League of Conservation Voters, and NY Association of Nurses. He is being challenged by Christine Rignola.

With the Suffolk County budget coming under frequent fire, Calarco was asked to explain the state of the county’s fiscal picture. “The biggest reason the bond rating agencies are not thrilled is not because of the level of debt – it‘s because we haven’t been willing to raise property taxes to pierce the cap,” Calarco said, “and what’s important to understand is we’re responsible when it comes to not raising the property tax.” Calarco underscored that the county has been recovering from the budget crisis of the last eight years. “We lost $180 million in sales tax revenues then,” Calarco explained, “and it was not until 2014 that we started recouping some of those revenues. That alone is a big hurdle because sales tax is our largest source of revenue.”

Calarco reports the legislature projected “conservative estimates” of sales tax: “This year in 2017 we projected a 2% growth in sales tax and this is very conservative because we will probably end this year with a 4.5% growth which will be surplus.” To put this number in perspective, every percent represents $13 million.

According to statistics cited by Calarco, pension costs have soared from $100 million to $250 million annually over the last three years, and that obligation is expected to spike to $400 million by the end of 2017.

To address some of its fiscal woes, county lawmakers reduced the work force which reflects a 10% reduction since 2011. “We’ve done things like cut child care subsidies and merged the treasurer’s and comptroller’s offices,” Calarco said, “so we’ve done a lot, and this year we will be seeing light at the end of the tunnel.”

Calarco has secured $18.5 million for Suffolk’s sewer infrastructure that improves water quality, passed a bill that keeps the cost of living down by ensuring housing affordability standards, passed five consecutive balanced budgets that froze the general fund property tax, and shut down overcrowded and unsafe homes in the Gordon Heights and East Patchogue communities.

Christine Rignola of East Patchogue is challenging Calarco for the 7th LD seat. She will appear on the Republican, Conservative and Women’s Equality lines of the ballot. Rignola worked in South Country School District, is a licensed real estate broker and has two college degrees in education. She served on

the Patchogue-Medford School Board for five years advocating against Core Curriculum and over-testing students, and to eliminate the Gap Elimination Adjustment which returned revenue back to the school district, and presently co-chairs the Positive Culture and Identity Committee in P-M. “This is a great time to run . . . I’m ready and they need me,” Rignola said in her goal to reduce the county’s debt and deficit. “We’ve got a $2.1 billion debt borrowing to pay county salaries and interest on top of it,” Rignola stated. She calls the red light cameras a “money grab,” adding: “They’re not fair and they’re not safe.” Rignola said she is running a grassroots campaign walking, working hard and getting to know a lot of people. Asked what makes her the better candidate over her opponent, Rignola said “his lack of sincerity with broken promises to clean up Canaan Lake.” Calarco denounced Rignola’s assertion saying that Canaan Lake has been in the process of being drained, scraped and cleaned up - a work that has been in progress over the last several months. Rignola said she will work to seek improvement of quality of life issues and empowerment for all citizens in her legislative district and to enable families to stay together on Long Island. We liked Rignola. If it was a different seat or legislator we may have endorsed her. Calarco receives a strong endorsement from The South Shore Press.

He is extremely effective and responsive.

3rd District: Kate Browning (WFP) is term limited after serving six terms. In the race for the Third LD, lifelong Mastic Beach resident and William Floyd High School alumnus, Rudy Sunderman, 47, will occupy the Republican and Conservative lines of the ballot. Josh Slaughter, 33, who is Browning’s chief of staff, is the Democrat candidate for the seat. Sunderman, is married with four children and has a long record of public service as chief of Mastic Fire Department and District Manager for Centereach Fire District.

Under Sunderman’s tenure as fire commissioner of Mastic Fire District, the GOP candidate said the department’s taxes were reduced by 20 percent. “I’m a lifelong resident, I care about this community, and I am the best person for the job,” Sunderman said. Sunderman, whose resume includes eight years as district manager of CVS Pharmacy, points to his business experience and fiscal responsibility to serve on the legislature. “He adds: I’m a public servant in this community with a proven record of reducing taxes while not cutting services, so what I would do in the county is take a look at intermunicipal agreements and shared services to cut costs.

The county is in a deficit and they’re borrowing money to operate yearly. We have to look at the deficit and how money is being spent,” Sunderman added, “because they’re raising fees in parks for camping and parking, and they’re not putting money back into caring for the parks, and with Smith Point Park being the number one park in Suffolk, this is very concerning to me.”

Sunderman cites his emergency services experiences as a unique perspective he would bring to the county legislature if he is the nominee and wins the election: “As fire chief, I’m always responding to emergencies, so if Suffolk County has an emergency, I’m ready.”

Among Sunderman’s positions on various issues impacting Suffolk County residents, he is not a proponent of red light cameras and does not support cuts in services. He will work to remove zombie homes, create jobs and promote economic development. From budgetary and fiscal standpoints, Sunderman says in order to fill budget holes contracts and requests for proposals should be renegotiated. He opposes cutting 1,000 employees to fill $1 million overtime in payrolls.

“The legislature has to cut wasteful spending and let the comptroller do his job,” Sunderman underscored.

Sunderman said the county must be more proactive in addressing the opioid epidemic: “We need to take back our county from this horrible epidemic before it destroys everything in its path and I have been and will remain committed to do so.” If elected Sunderman said he will “partner with all levels of government and law enforcement to bring resources into the county to help fight the epidemic through a multi layered response including education, treatment and federal law enforcement assistance.” He said the county must “increase addition treatment areas in our county and make sure this treatment is affordable for those struggling with addition.”

Slaughter, the Democratic candidate did not screen.

We strongly endorse Rudy Sunderman for change.

4th District Republican incumbent Tom Muratore first won election to the legislature in November 2009 and currently serves as vice chair of the Department of Public Works, Transportation Committee and he is a member of the Environment, Planning and Energy Committee. As a former Suffolk County Police Officer and Union law enforcement official with over 34 years of service to the community and as a former small business owner, Muratore recognizes the peoples’ need for representation in county government which includes taxes, infrastructure, safety, caring for veterans and seniors, and budget issues. In addressing the county’s finances, Muratore said in a recent interview: “The current majority spends money like crazy.” A proponent for more prudent spending and in order to effectuate change in county government, Muratore asserts: “We need to change the complexion of politics in Suffolk County; 12 years of one party rule is not good.” To accomplish this, Muratore said the current 12-Democrat majority and Republican minority would have to change to a 9-9 board of legislators. On the issue of the controversial red light cameras, Muratore said the county needs to create a moratorium and cease issuing tickets so data can be examined. Some of his past legislative initiatives include but are not limited to the Energy Utility Oversight Task Force which he sponsored, as well as co-sponsoring a bill to secure a 23acre parcel on Boyle Road in Selden where a ball field now exists and which is being developed by the Town of Brookhaven for parkland and walking trails. In 2015 he played an integral role in adopting a bill to monitor the use of drones in county parks and last year sponsored a law to provide parking for veterans at county facilities as well as legislation renaming a portion of County Road continued on next page

Continued from Page 6 16 after a local hero. This year Muratore sponsored legislation for Operation Safe Stop for bus awareness and co-sponsored a local law to increase penalties for illegal dumping in the county.

Running against Muratore is Dom Pascual.

We strongly endorse Tom Muratore for reelection. He has been one of the hardest working members of the legislature and has always delivered for his district. He and his staff perform great constituent services.

6th District: Gary Pollakusky is challenging Democrat Legislator Sarah Anker for this Legislative District. He will appear on the Republican, Conservative and Reform party lines of the ballot. Pollakusky is a private business owner, and is a board member of the Town of Brookhaven’s Industrial Development Agency and Brookhaven Local Development Corporation. He is founder of the North Shore Community Association and received the Long Island Business News Corporate Citizenship of the Year Award. Pollakusky is a proponent for and if elected will work to “cut wasteful government” spending. In an interview during his screening Pollakusky stated: “Ten years ago the county had a Triple A bond rating and now the county is drowning in debt and we’re just above junk status. Fees are taxes that we have on red light cameras, mortgage tax and now cremation – it’s pure fiscal irresponsibility.”

Pollakusky said he will provide tax relief to the citizens of Suffolk County, promote economic growth, implement common sense fiscal policy in the county and provide resources to combat gang violence and the county’s heroin epidemic.

Sixth District Democrat Legislator Sarah Anker did not screen. The South Shore Press makes no endorsement in this race.

District 5th South Setauket resident Ed Flood, an attorney and chief of staff to New York State Assemblyman Dean Murray for the past three years, is challenging Democrat incumbent Legislative Majority Leader Kara Hahn for the 5th Legislative District seat on the Republican line. Flood will appear on the Republican and Conservative lines of the ballot. During a recent screening interview with Flood, he said he would work to rein in what he calls “wasteful government spending,

push back against rising PSEG costs, promote policies for economic growth, combat the county’s heroin and opioid epidemics, and pass balanced budgets without relying on excessive fees, surcharges and backdoor taxes.” Flood said he would like to bring the skills he has honed as Murray’s chief of staff in constituent service, budgeting and “operating in the black” to the Suffolk County Legislature. Flood criticized the county for “an overabundance of patronage jobs,” and questions “how is it that Suffolk County is now above junk status in its bond rating?” Flood said his desire to address the county’s “economically depressed and crime ridden areas” are among other reasons he is running for office.

From a fiscal standpoint he stated: “Suffolk County makes poor financial decisions... Sometimes you have to spend money to make money and we have to equip the county comptroller’s office with more staff.” Calling red light cameras a “money grab where most of the money goes to Zerox Corporation,” Flood said he is “not a fan of red light cameras.” He asserts red light cameras are “unevenly distributed against low income areas.”

Democrat Kara Hahn did not screen and we make no endorsement in this race.

2nd District: Bridget Fleming is running on the Democrat, Independence, Women’s Equality and Working Family Party lines for a second term to serve constituents in the Second Legislative District. In a recent interview Fleming said her priorities for the next legislative session if re-elected include continuing to focus on preservation and protection of natural resources and drinking water, public health issues, the opioid crisis, job creation and economic opportunities.

What Fleming asserts makes her the better candidate to continue serving constituents in the 2nd LD are her background as a criminal prosecutor and her former role as a member of the Southampton Town Board.

“These positions give me the experience to get things done and I’m blessed to have a team of people around me to accomplish this,” Fleming said. “In my first term I have a very good record where we have returned $7 million in capital funding to my district.” Fleming said that while her legislative district does not have red light cameras installed, she is looking forward to results of an analysis by the Suffolk County Department of Public

Works and Nelson, Pope and Voohres. “Traffic safety is a top priority and I recognize the importance of traffic safety measures where we will be taking a hard look at the impact (of the cameras),” she said. Speaking about the budget and a look ahead to 2018, Fleming stated: “I’m pleased we continue to lower the structural deficit. While on the Southampton Town Board we turned around a multimillion dollar deficit on how we use town resources and we are using that same level of discipline on the county budget. I follow Rob Calarco’s lead as deputy presiding officer where we are keeping government lean and efficient while keeping an eye on services Suffolk County citizens count on.”

Fleming lauds her constituent services. “This is one of the best parts of the job and I work with a terrific team in solving hundreds of issues for people.” Fleming’s endorsements include but are not limited to Suffolk County Correction Officers Association, Deputy Sheriffs SCPBA, SCPBA, SCAME, Southampton Town PBA, and Communications Workers of America Local 1108.

8th District: Anthony Piccirillo of Bohemia will appear on the Republican, Conservative and Reform lines. He says Suffolk is in its “worst fiscal condition in history.” Piccirillo said he wants to “reduce the millions the county is in debt by streamlining the budgeting process and by holding each department accountable for waste, fraud and abuse.” He said he “will not accept donations from special interest groups just to stay in office while doing bidding for the highest campaign donors, and will always fight for transparency in government.” If elected, Piccirillo said he will be a full time legislator: “A Suffolk County Legislator is not a part time job and when elected, this will be my only job, Suffolk County has full time problems and we cannot afford a part time legislator.” He is a proponent for line item vetoing. Piccirillo is a member of Sayville Rotary Club, East End Republican Club of Sayville, and Suffolk County Young Republicans Club. Democrat William Lindsey did not screen. We endorse Anthony Piccirillo.

BROOKHAVEN TOWN BOARD SEATS UP FOR ELECTION

When residents in the Town of Brookhaven head to the polls on November 7th, they will be asked to elect a supervisor, one council district representative, town clerk and highway superintendent. The town supervisor and representatives of each of the six town council districts are elected to two-year terms. The offices of the town clerk and highway superintendent are each four-year terms.

Brookhaven Town Supervisor Edward Romaine was first elected to the town board in 2012 after having served in the Suffolk County Legislature. Romaine will appear on the Republican, Conservative and Independence Parties of the ballot. He is being challenged on the Democrat side of the aisle by Jack Harrington, an attorney and an officer

in the U.S. Navy Reserves. Harrington will appear on the Democrat and Working Family Party lines.

Romaine lauds the Brookhaven’s AAA Bond Rating issued by Standard & Poors and the municipality’s ability to hold the line on taxes. While he is proud of this record, Romaine was quick to credit the full town board with advancing balanced budgets and their ability to work cohesively on fiscal and other issues at the forefront of the township’s agenda. “I have a tremendous town board who all have working relationships with each other,” he said.

The 2018 Budget was presented with a zero tax increase and zero cuts in services, according to figures cited by Romaine. While Romaine says the “biggest (fiscal) issue is employee health care,” he emphasized that “there’s still a lot of work to do.”

In an effort to improve the complexion of the town, Romaine’s administration has been taking steps to hold banks accountable to clean up foreclosures that have fallen into disrepair or blight, taking action to demolish zombie structures town-wide, strengthening the town code to increase fines to protect neighbors from slumlords and strengthen house rental laws to crack down on unscrupulous landlords. Over 150 zombie homes have been leveled since Romaine has taken office. Job creation and bolstering the town’s economy by attracting new businesses to Brookhaven remain a priority on the supervisor’s platform. Romaine has supported the increase of enforcement staff to prosecute those who continued on next page

Asked about the landfill’s shelf life and level of financial dependency, Romaine stated: “The landfill has a seven year shelf life after which we are establishing reserve funds which now contain $5 million. The landfill represents $30 million annual gross income.” Romaine noted the town has been and continues to cap the landfill in stages. With little under a $300,000 million town budget, Romaine did not detail from which sources funding would derive for the municipality following closure of the landfill.

On the issue of Mastic Beach Village reverting back to town control, Romaine reported the town has received $1 million from New York State as part of a grant for municipal consolidation of which he said $700,000 was used to lower taxes throughout the town and $300,000 which was applied to Mastic Beach Village. Romaine said the town is aggressively pursuing part of a $20 million grant as the town looks ahead to taking Mastic Beach back into town leadership. The South Shore Press endorses Romaine.

First District Democrat Councilwoman Valerie Cartright did not screen.

She is being challenged by Republican opponent James Canale III. Canale, 26, will appear on the Republican, Conservative and Independence lines of the ballot. He was born and raised in Port Jefferson Station. Canale is presently employed by the Town of Brookhaven as an Office Assistant in the Department of General Services where he is responsible for maintaining the town’s vehicular pool fleet and works part time as a driver/ messenger. He assists Brookhaven residents via telephone and occasionally covers front desk duties at Supervisor Romaine’s office. Canale is also video producer and editor of Circadian Studios where he produces TV commercials and social media promotions for Island-based businesses, music videos for bands and artists and short films. Asked why he is running for town council, Canale stated: “My number one message is to have a real affordable housing initiative. We’re looking to modify and simplify zoning to meet the needs of lower income residents and also, millennials move off Suffolk County to pursue careers elsewhere which leave the tax burden fully on seniors.”

Citing numerous empty storefronts north of the railroad tracks in Port Jefferson, Canale added: “I’d look toward bringing local contractors and builders to see how Brookhaven Town can create real affordable housing.”

Canale said he would work to improve conditions at the town’s animal shelter. “I’m also a huge environmentalist and would work to preserve open space and farmland.”

The South Shore Press makes no endorsement.

Second District Councilwoman Jane Bonner is a registered Conservative and has also received the Republican, Independence and Reform lines on the ballot.

First elected in 2007, Bonner is the longest-serving sitting member on the town board. She is being challenged on the Democrat side of the aisle by lifelong Brookhaven resident Michael Goodman. Goodman is a programmer, tech business owner and computer teacher who is also endorsed by the Working Family Party.

Bonner has worked tirelessly to improve storm water drainage on the North Shore, has enacted ethics reform and accountability through anti-nepotism legislation, and revitalized downtowns by supporting the development of the infrastructure. She has fought

to strike a balance between smart development and the preservation of open space. Bonner, who has supported balanced budgets that have attributed to the town’s AAA Bond Rating, says this will save the town over $7.15 million over the next decade through a major bond refinancing in the form of lower interest costs. She has worked alongside constituents to raise awareness and funding for and to combat heroine and opioid addiction.

Bonner has supported advanced technology enabling the town to institute new systems in the Building and Highway departments which she says translate to a more resident-friendly and cost-efficient way of saving time and money. Bonner was a proponent in the initiative to install GPS in the town’s vehicular fleet, taking away ‘take home cars’ from employees and said she is looking ahead to the next two years to remain proactive in soliciting businesses with the town’s Economic Development team.

“We’ve maintained and improved the quality of life and a healthy respect for investing in our downtowns with development in appropriate areas,” Bonner stated. The South Shore Press endorses Bonner.

Third District Councilman Kevin LaValle was first elected in 2013 and like Cartright, is finishing his second two-year term. He is being cross-endorsed by the Conservative and Independence parties and will appear on those respective lines of the ballot. Running against LaValle is Democrat opponent Alfred (Fred) Lanacci who has been a professional project manager in the architectural millwork and construction industry for 40 years. LaValle prides the level of his constituent service and ability to work with groups and organizations within his district for his ability to accomplish and address issues.

“I have been accessible on every level and make myself accessible during events, social media and street fairs,” LaValle said. He has worked to preserve open space for active park land and athletic fields throughout Selden and Ronkonkoma. “I want to work to bring government back to the people, I host community events, hold citizens’ preparedness training and have knocked on tens of thousands of doors to get the pulse of the community,” LaValle explained. The South Shore Press proudly endorses Councilman LaValle.

Fourth District Councilman Michael Loguercio was elected in 2015. He will appear on the Republican, Conservative and Independence lines. Looking to unseat Loguercio is Democrat candidate Dan Polner, an experienced business professional whose experience includes mentoring and advocacy for startup technology companies at Stony Brook University. He is a volunteer firefighter in his local department. He has received the endorsement of the Working Family Party. Loguercio, a resident of Ridge for 40 years served on the Longwood School Board for 12 years. He credits his first term with bringing down zombie homes, holding the line on taxes and cutting wasteful government spending. He also takes credit for revitalizing parks in his district, creating jobs by attracting new businesses to the town and improving the quality of life for residents. The South Shore Press endorses Loguercio.

Fifth District Republican Councilman Neil Foley was elected in 2014, and is being cross-endorsed by the Conservative and Independence parties. Foley, a Blue Point resident, is being challenged by Democrat Lisa DiSanto who did not screen. Foley touts the state of the town’s finances as a plus, citing the town’s AAA Bond

Rating. Foley says Brookhaven’s fiscal formula for success is due to some simple factors: “We’ve been running in the black the last three years, we’ve been paying down our debt and we don’t borrow money we don’t have.”

Foley heralds his constituent record as the pinnacle of his service. “My platform is that I’m a constituent-first person. I have between 80,000 and 90,000 constituents and there are challenges in the offices and quality of life is a priority,” he said. Asked what makes him the better candidate over his opponent, Foley responded, “My experience, the fact that I’m a hands-on councilman, and I really care about the issues.” The South Shore Press endorses Councilman Foley.

Sixth District Republican Councilman and Deputy Town Supervisor, Dan Panico, was first elected to the town board in 2010 where he has served consecutive terms on the town council. An alumnus of William Floyd High School and law school graduate, Panico, who now resides in Center Moriches, will also appear on the Conservative and Independence lines of the ballot.

Running for Panico’s seat is Democrat Art Turkington, whose business background is in regulatory compliance, labor relations and management development.

During his tenure, Panico authored landmark legislation involving the tax cap, anti-nepotism legislation, and ethics reform. Panico has prioritized cracking down on illegal housing and blighted structures and he has preserved hundreds of acres of farmland and open space.

“I have been working aggressively combating suburban blight and cracking down on illegal and substandard housing and squatters. My next big challenge,” Panico continued, “is taking Mastic Beach back into Brookhaven Town (leadership) which is a very large challenge.” Panico said 50 structures in Mastic Beach are on the docket for being torn down. “This winter is going to be the Game of Thrones (so to speak) for slumlords in Mastic Beach because we’re going to be bringing houses up to code and it’s going to be a big transition,” Panico said. The councilman said he is looking forward to serving the residents of the Sixth Council District and town-wide for another two year term. In 2014, Panico was recognized by the Long Island Business News as a rising star in the “40 Under 40 Annual awards Gala.”

As he concluded his screening interview with emphasis on the 6th Council District waterfront, Panico stated “the Mastic Beach waterfront has never reached its full potential,” then underscored, “Mastic Beach will experience the likes of which the 11951 zip code has never seen, and, there’s going to be an increase in police presence where we will eventually have a 24/7 police building.”

DISTRICT ATTORNEY RACE SUFFOLK COUNTY

In the wake of District Attorney Thomas Spota’s decision to forgo reelection, the race for Suffolk County District Attorney pits longtime law criminal lawyer Ray Perini, Republican, against the current County Police Commissioner Democrat Tim Sini. In office since 2001, Spota made his announcement in May after charges were levied against him of taking part in the promotion of former Suffolk County Police Chief James Burke. In February of 2016 Burke pleaded guilty to civil rights violations and conspiracy to obstruct justice charges. He was accused of taking part in a police cover-up which resulted in a federal investigation.

Tim Sini currently serves as Suffolk County Police Commissioner, a post to which he was appointed in January of last year. Prior to this appointment he served as Suffolk’s Assistant Deputy Executive for Public Safety. The Democratic candidate believes he has keen insights into the needs of the DA’s office and a record of leadership heading up the Suffolk County Police Department giving him the ability and experience to reform and restructure the office of District Attorney.

Commissioner Sini has stated that he is running to restore integrity to the office and make the county a safer place to live, work, and raise a family. He will

do this by reducing crime and improving community relations through the use of advanced technology.

He would address the opioid epidemic by punishing dealers and providing help for the addict. Sini pledges to aggressively fight gang violence.

“As Suffolk County Police Commissioner, I have taken the lead in the war against MS-13 and drug dealers. We have already taken steps to implement a successful multipronged strategy in Suffolk which has resulted in the arrests of more than 300 gang members in just one year.” Sini is pledged to partner with the US Attorney’s Office and create a special division specifically responsible for prosecuting MS13 members.

Sini’s opponent is Ray Perini, a Huntington resident. Perini the former chief and founder of the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Narcotics Bureau.

He is a seasoned criminal attorney and has an active practice in Islandia. He boasts 43 years’ experience in the criminal justice system, 17 of which were in Brooklyn and Suffolk Counties. In 1989 Perini served with Federal and State police agencies, including the County Police, the FBI, and the Drug Enforcement Administration.

Sini scoffs at his opponent’s claim of 43 years’ experience in the criminal justice system. “While

the length of my opponent’s experience may seem impressive, what he fails to acknowledge is that most of those years were spent defending criminals, not prosecuting them. This doesn’t bode well for someone seeking to become the County’s District Attorney. Maybe that’s what he means by calling himself ‘a Professional Prosecutor.’ The voters will chose and they will decide if they want a ‘professional’ or someone with a proven record in law enforcement and public service.”

Perini says there is nothing he hasn’t done in the criminal justice system. “My major focuses if elected will be drug overdoses and gang violence. I believe that working together with the Feds, DEA, FBI and local police we can win the war on drugs. As District Attorney, I can make Suffolk County safe again.” Mr. Perini has been endorsed by New York Veteran Police Association and the Association of Federal Narcotic Agents. He has asserted his promise to take politics out of the DA’s Office and clean up Suffolk’s streets.

However to date Perini has not offered any details on how he would “put the gangs on notice and send the opioid dealers to jail.”

The voters need to decide this election. The South Shore Press thinks we have two great candidates, but we make no endorsement.

SUFFOLK COUNTY RACE FOR SHERIFF

For the first time in twelve years there will be a new Sheriff in Suffolk County. Sheriff Vincent DeMarco, in office since 2005, had opted not to seek reelection in the wake of initiating a corruption investigation of former Conservative Party Chairman Edward Walsh.

DeMarco himself is a Conservative. There are two aspirants for the resulting vacancy. The Republican candidate is Lawrence Zacarese, fresh from his soaring primary victory over Phil Boyle. The Democrats, after some last minute scuffling, have endorsed a newcomer Errol Toulon.

Zacarese has an extensive resume. Currently serving as an Assistant Chief for a large public research University Police Department, Mr. Zacarese has overseen Patrol Operations, Parking Enforcement, Uniformed Security Operations in the Detective Division, the Office of Electronic Physical Security & Access Control and in his present role is serving as the Director of the Office of Emergency Management.

His current experience includes being a Director for the Long Island Infragard FBI Public and Private Partnership. He is on the Board of Advisors for

Campus Safety Magazine and being a FEMA Region II Representative for the International Association of Emergency Managers of University and College Caucus.

When asked about what steps he would take to fight crime Zacarese asserted, “The prime responsibility of the Sheriff is to zero in on high crime areas. I will make sweeping changes in how things are done to reduce crime. There can be no holding back. In places like Mastic Beach, Brentwood, and Manorville, to name a few, the problem of “zombie homes” is a growing catalyst for the breakdown of order in the community.

By shutting down these houses we can reduce crime, drug trafficking, and gang activity. It’s a cycle that has to be smashed.”

He also stated, “The relationship between the District, Attorney, the Police Chief and all state and federal agencies must transcend politics. I will work very hard to make sure there is an open exchange of communication and cooperation between the office of Sheriff and the District Attorney’s Office. We must unite in a concerted fight to preserve the character of our communities. We must embark upon an all-out

war on the spreading cancer of Opioid abuse and MS-13 activity.” Rehabilitation of addicts is a must.

The Democratic candidate in this race is Errol Toulon Jr. Toulon’s career in criminal justice includes 22 years as a uniformed member with the Department of Correction from 1982 to 2004. He left Suffolk County government to return to the NYC Department of Corrections where he accepted a position as 1st Deputy Commissioner.

His record with the department of Corrections in New York City indicates that he served competently.

However not much more information is available regarding his public service. Toulon has never been elected to public office. During this campaign his only contact with the electorate has been to reach out to solicit campaign contributions. Otherwise he has flown under the radar and his name recognition with the voters is weak. Our efforts to contact him were unsuccessful as he did not respond to our calls or e-mails.

Obituaries JOHN M. EGAN, 69,

of Shirley, died peacefully surrounded by his loving family at Good Shepherd Hospice in Port Jefferson on October 27th, 2017. John was born in Queens, NY. He was retired from the Suffolk County Department of Public Works as a highway maintenance supervisor. He was an avid reader, loved watching television, classic rock music and was a great fan of the NY Yankees. John loved his four-legged furry grandchildren, enjoyed traveling to Montauk and Lancaster, Pennsylvania. He is survived by his devoted wife Rosalie to whom he has been married for the past thirty-eight years. He was the proud father to Joseph and Erin, and adored brother to Teddy, Bobby, Maryellen Boyajian, Ruth Ann Epstein, Katie Rush and Patricia Egan. He had great affection for all his nieces and nephews. Family and friends will be received at Roma Funeral Home in Shirley on Thursday and Friday. A Mass will be offered on Saturday (11/4) at St. Jude’s RC Church in Mastic Beach.

Interment will take place at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery in Center Moriches.

ADELE B. PAWLOWSKI, affectionately known as “Babci”, died at Southampton Hospital in the presence of her loving family on October 28th, 2017. She was born in Brooklyn, NY. Adele has been a U.S. Mail Carrier with the Shirley branch for many years. Adele was an animal lover, especially elephants.

She loved to dance the polka, play bingo, travel and crochet blankets for family and friends. She was predeceased by her beloved husband Stanley in 1982, her son Richard and grandson Stephen. She is survived by her loving children Stanley (Margaret) and Robert (Joan); she was the cherished grandmother of twelve and great grandmother of ten. Family and friends were received at Roma Funeral Home in Shirley on Tuesday with a Mass offered at St. Joseph the Worker in Bellport and interment at Calverton National Cemetery on Wednesday.

Two Young Lives

We were called upon to assist two families to help arrange funeral services.

This of course was not unusual, but the circumstances of each call tugged at my heart. You may ask, “How can you be so affected by these situations; after all you have been in funeral service for over forty years?” I will confess that it never gets easier. The plight of each family we assist is unique. Each human being has a story to tell; some stories are uplifting and joyful, while others are sad and tragic. As many of you know, I have always expressed my feelings on the death of children.

The small white casket stood so bright and solitary, its contents filled with the hope and promise of a child still unborn.

The parents, grandparents, family, and friends all devastated when the news came that the babe had died in his mother’s womb. The sorrow, the disappointment, so real, so strong, is impossible to ignore. A child; whose life did not begin and already taken, is hard to accept. An Angel in the purest sense, taken from its loving parents.

Heartbreaking!

The pictures of the strikingly handsome young man that depicted his unfulfilled potential, made his death so difficult to accept. As I looked at the

photos, moments captured in a split second by the lens of a camera, I could not help but wonder “Why?”. Glimpses shared of happier times. The handsome little blonde boy, his curly hair ringing his youthful face, with big eyes round with wonder and an impish smile that could light up the world. Looking back at the young man lying in the casket, so handsome, tall, and well-built, still sporting that impish smile, a vision of health and promise. His life suddenly and tragically brought to conclusion.

Life not born; a life taken. Two tragic ends to the dream for the future.

Two families bearing the pain of loss and the sorrow; each grieving in their own way. The one family cheated that their son had never been given the chance to survive; the other family destroyed by an abbreviated life that was given and so suddenly taken. The anger, frustration and the unanswered “Why?” will be asked for the rest of their lives. Unfortunately, we may never know that answer, but we can take their memories into our hearts, until we meet them again in Paradise.

We pray for the healing of both families and rejoice in the knowledge that both are now in God’s care.

POLNER REFUTES BIAS CHARGE

In the waning days of the election campaign for Brookhaven Town 4th District, a Democratic “Meet the Candidates’ Night” in East Patchogue erupted into an unexpected protest scene for candidate Dan Polner. As a result, a heated confrontation between the candidate and a former co-worker Nicole Christian ensued, whose charges which she admitted she could not substantiate. Polner agreed to sign a disclosure to release workplace records related to disciplinary action taken at Stony Brook SBDC. On Tuesday evening, October 24th, at the Hagerman Fire Department Candidates’ Night, in the face of the pressure from Ms. Christian, Dan Polner acknowlwgded knowing that he was reported to the Stony Brook Office of Diversity and Inclusion for his behavior toward five African American staff members in the workplace after he had been promoted to supervise them.

Polner denied any impropriety or racial discrimination and gender bias. “Three years ago I was given the position of reviewing the work of Nicole Christian and four others, without a promotion or pay increase. This was an appointment I didn’t seek or ask for.

Up until then, our relationship in the office had been pleasant and amiable. After the personnel change, the staff became defensive and uncooperative.”

“There’s no reason for me to relinquish my position on the ballot. I think we’ll have to allow the electorate to decide this ridiculous charge of bias. There are issues in this election which my opponent and I should be addressing.

This is a blatant attempt to cloud those issues and taint my character.” Polner said that the electorate would see this as a desperate lastditch attempt to blur what is really important in this race.

His accuser, Nicole Christian, charges Polner with being an extremely unpleasant

member of the SBDC counseling staff.

“He managed a group of us that reported to him during the Sandy Storm Recovery program. We reported him to EEO for racial discrimination and gender bias. After speaking to him on several occasions with management intervention about his invasive tone and body language, we had no other choice but to report him internally to the Stony Brook University EEO Office. There was a formal investigation on behalf of all five of us. Although the panel could find no wrong doing on Dan’s part, he was put on probation and subsequently forced out of the SBDC altogether...”

“Dan never apologized or acknowledged his responsibility for his insensitive behavior.

He became even more hostile and unpleasant to work with. As a longtime active resident of Gordon Heights, I am saddened and actually shocked that he would choose to represent one of the most diverse council districts in Brookhaven. Regardless of Dan’s qualifications and experience, he does not have the sensitivity to represent the Town of Brookhaven 4th Council District.”

When appraised of Ms. Christian’s remarks, Polner responded that the charges of unpleasantness and insensitivity were not strong enough to influence the investigating committee at Stony Brook University to call him in for an interview. “It’s obvious in today’s age of political correctness,” said the candidate, “that had there been any evidence of racial discrimination or gender bias, Stony Brook would have fired me on the spot. Instead I was transferred to another department and promoted with a raise in salary.”

Polner stated that he believes that to focus attention on something which was alleged to have occurred four years ago and never proven smacks of “politics as usual” and is the Republican Party leadership’s feeble attempt at an “October Surprise.”

EDITORIAL FASNY Reminder to New Yorkers

Change your Clocks, Check your Smoke Detector Batteries As Daylight Savings Time comes to an end on November 5th, the Firemen’s Association of the State of New York (FASNY) urges all citizens to check their smoke and carbon monoxide alarms to ensure their homes are properly prepared for an emergency. Alarms equipped with either removable or sealed-in batteries both need to be tested. Removable batteries should be replaced, and sealed-in batteries should be checked to confirm they are functioning.

Data from the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) states that three of every five home fire deaths occur in homes without working smoke alarms, and the vast majority of smoke alarm failures are due to dead or missing batteries. FASNY recommends cleaning all alarms to remove any debris that might impede their function and to test the batteries, changing them as necessary. Taking these precautionary measures, as well as creating and practicing a home escape plan, are some of the important steps New Yorkers can take to protect their homes and families.

“The end of Daylight Savings Time is the perfect opportunity to check your smoke alarm batteries,” said FASNY President Ken Pienkowski. “We encourage all New Yorkers to use this as a reminder to update your fire safety measures in the home, especially as the cold months approach and heaters start to turn on. Making sure you have taken the right precautionary measures can save lives. FASNY also encourages New Yorkers to install 10-year smoke alarms, which cannot be easily disabled. ” At the end of 2015, Governor Andrew Cuomo signed a bill into law that will require all smoke alarms sold in New York State to be equipped with sealed-in, nonremovable batteries that last for at least 10 years. The new law will take effect in 2019 and marks an important step in improving New York’s fire safety.

FASNY smoke & CO alarm tips: • Test alarms at least once a month by using the test button.

• If you have an alarm with a removable battery, be sure to check the batteries every six months, and change the batteries every year. If a battery is starting to lose its power, the unit will usually chirp to warn you. Do NOT disable the unit.

COMMUNITYViewpoint Supporting Zacarese for Sheriff Dear Editor: With regard to the current race for Sheriff, it is amazing to me that the Democrats, in collusion with the remnants of the Conservative party, are now on their fourth candidate for the office.

It further amazes me that the conservatives, with their traditional tax cutting smaller government policies would agree to back a DeBlasio liberal democrat for their line on the ballot. It begins to look a lot less like good politics and more like a disgraced former party boss reaching out from behind bars to have one last swipe at his political enemies. After all, Mr. Toulon stated in his News 12 debate that he would change the "culture" of the Suffolk County Jails. Which culture would he be looking to change? A successful model of care, custody and control that has existed for many years serving the citizens of Suffolk County well through a myriad of innovative and successful programs and initiatives to that of the environment from which he derives his experience at Riker's Island? One in which there has been nothing but turmoil and travesty in the headlines for the last several years? Officers in Suffolk worry

about their jail morphing into a Riker's through lower starting salaries and decreased benefits in recent contract negotiations, yet the conservatives would be content to promote it further with their candidate. Would that change in culture also include lowering the standards used in hiring officers in Suffolk as well, in order to fill depleting ranks? No thanks! It is important to note that, despite the failure of their union to endorse and support a candidate for Sheriff, the rank and file officers in the Suffolk County Jails overwhelmingly support Larry Zacarese for Sheriff of Suffolk County. Larry is the best candidate to move the Sheriff's Office forward into the future. He is a true, experienced Law Enforcement candidate with no political or party strings attached.

The people of Suffolk deserve an independent and well run Sheriff's Office, and Larry Zacarese deserves your vote on November 7th to be your next Sheriff.
