On Tuesday, August 30th, Robert Miller, a longtime resident of the Village of Mastic Beach presented petitions to the Village Clerk containing over 1,600 signatures calling on the Village of Mastic Beach to schedule an election to allow residents to keep or dissolve the village. The vllage will now review the petitions to determine their validity.

The Mastic Beach Property Owners Association held its annual Blue Claw Crab Festival on Sunday in Mastic Beach at Marina 1. Fresh blue claw crabs, crab cakes, clams and shrimp were the main attraction with other popular and favorite food vendors like hamburgers, zeppoles, ice cream and more. A lot of preparation and cooking went into the day by volunteers from the association in the days prior to the event.

Everything from face painting, clothing, jewelry, toys, dinnerware, games, live entertainment, and services were offered by the participating vendors.

Community Events and Happenings “Workers Without Wheels” Event is a Success in Mastic Beach This past July, 18 year old Jonah Santos, a senior at William Floyd High School, and his father David Santos, launched a new bike shop business called "Fixed Gears Bike Shop" in Mastic Beach. Their mission is more than just selling and repairing bikes. They want to give back to the community and help improve the lives of their fellow residents. They share their vision with Pastor Patrick “PJ” Balzer, who formed Kings Kids Christian Outreach in Mastic Beach to help residents and families in need. The two partnered this past Saturday, August 20 to offer adult bicycles, as well as some kids bikes, to people without cars or easy access to mass transportation. The event resulted in 45 bicycles being given out to local residents that rely on bikes every day. Legislator Kate Browning (WF-Shirley) and Legislator Kate Browning, PJ Balzer and his wife Catherine Gutierrez, David her Chief of Staff Josh Slaughter attended the event to and Jonah Santos, and Chief of Staff Josh Slaughter in front of Fixed Gear Bike present organizations with certificates of appreciation Shop in Mastic Beach. for their efforts.

Throughout the morning a steady stream of families attended the bike giveaway event. The event featured "good condition and repairable bikes" offered on a "first come, while supply lasts" basis to anyone that needed transportation to work, school or care programs. The day was made possible by donations of bikes, bike parts and/or funding for the purchase of parts that were needed. They offered the bikes under the banner of "Workers Without Wheels". “Workers Without Wheels” is a program founded in 2011 by Pastor Dwight Wolter of the Congregational church in Patchogue. To date, the program has given away well over 200 bicycles.

“We take for granted every day the privilege of owning a car to get to and from work,” said Legislator Browning.

“Unfortunately, there are fellow neighbors that have fallen on hard times who don’t have the luxury of owning a vehicle or being able to purchase a bike. I applaud Fixed Gear Bike Shop and Kings Kids Christian Outreach for filling this need for our residents who must rely on bikes to survive. They are doing great work and I was happy to recognize them for their efforts.”

All About Diabetes Diabetes is a disease in which the body does not produce or properly use insulin. Insulin is a hormone that is needed to convert sugar, starches and other food into energy needed for daily life. The cause of diabetes continues to be a mystery, although both genetics and environmental factors such as obesity and lack of exercise appear to play roles.

There are 23.6 million children and adults in the United States, or 7.8% of the population, who have diabetes. While an estimated 17.9 million have been diagnosed with diabetes, unfortunately, 5.7 million people (or nearly one quarter) are unaware that they have the disease.

In order to determine whether or not a patient has pre-diabetes or diabetes, health care providers conduct a Fasting Plasma Glucose Test (FPG) or an Oral Glucose Tolerance Test (OGTT). Either test can be used to diagnose pre-diabetes or diabetes. The American Diabetes Association recommends the FPG because it is easier, faster, and less expensive to perform.

With the FPG test, a fasting blood glucose level between 100 and 125 mg/dl signals prediabetes. A person with a fasting blood glucose level of 126 mg/dl or higher has diabetes.

In the OGTT test, a person's blood glucose level is measured after a fast and two hours after drinking a glucose-rich beverage. If the two-hour blood glucose level is between 140 and 199 mg/dl, the person tested has pre-diabetes. If the two-hour blood glucose level is at 200 mg/dl or higher, the person tested has diabetes.

Major Types of Diabetes Type 1 diabetes Results from the body's failure to produce insulin, the hormone that "unlocks" the cells of the body, allowing glucose to enter and fuel them. It is estimated that 5-10% of Americans who are diagnosed with diabetes have type 1 diabetes.

Type 2 diabetes Results from insulin resistance (a condition in which the body fails to properly use insulin), combined with relative insulin deficiency. Most Americans who are diagnosed with diabetes have type 2 diabetes.

Gestational diabetes Immediately after pregnancy, 5% to 10% of women with gestational diabetes are found to have diabetes, usually, type 2.

Pre-diabetes Pre-diabetes is a condition that occurs when a person's blood glucose levels are higher than normal but not high enough for a diagnosis of type 2 diabetes. There are 57 million Americans who have pre-diabetes, in addition to the 23.6 million with diabetes.

Supporting Trump Dear Editor: Hillary Clinton has forgotten what it means to be a public servant, if she ever understood public service at all.

E-mails show that while Hillary Clinton served as Secretary of State, the Clinton Foundation accepted large payments from overseas corporations and wealthy foreigners.

Then, those same donors, who had significant business before the State Department, received favorable treatment from Crooked Hillary in her role as Secretary of State.

In response, Donald Trump has called for an independent Special Prosecutor to investigate this corruption because, as it turns out, the Department of Justice has also acted unethically. In particular, Attorney General Loretta Lynch's lengthy meeting with Former President Bill Clinton on a private plane just prior to the DOJ's decision not to prosecute his wife for her crimes was a "courtesy" that never would have been extended to the average citizen.

This blatant favoritism showed the American public that justice is not blind!

Fox News: Is a special prosecutor needed to investigate Clinton Foundation?

An honest and forthright Special Prosecutor will conclude the following: • Crooked Hillary's actions corrupted and disgraced one of the most important Departments of government, indeed one of only four established by the United States Constitution itself.

• The Clintons made the State Department into the same kind of Pay-to-Play operations as the Arkansas Government was: pay the Clinton Foundation huge sums of money and throw in some big speaking fees for Bill Clinton and you got to play with the State Department.

• The amounts involved, the favors done and the significant numbers of times it was done require an expedited investigation by a Special Prosecutor. After the Obama Administration's Department of Justice whitewashed of the Clinton email crimes, they certainly cannot be trusted to quickly or impartially investigate Hillary Clinton's crimes.

The Justice Department must appoint an independent Special Prosecutor because it has proven itself to be a political arm of the White House!

Here is one example of Clinton Corruption: As Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton signed off on a deal allowing Russians to take an increased stake in a company called Uranium One, giving up control of about 20 percent of America's uranium supply to the Russians. Clinton's approval of the deal netted the owners of the uranium company millions of dollars. In exchange for signing off on the deal, some of the former owners of Uranium One gave the Clinton Foundation millions of dollars in donations. In addition, Bill Clinton received $500,000 for a speech to a Kremlin-backed investment firm that was a beneficiary of the deal.

A Trump Administration will end the government corruption. No one will be above the law and we will have one set of rules for everyone. In 77 days, only the American voters can help make that happen. I hope you are ready!

I have lived here for 86 years and am very sorry to see what has happened to our once wonderful town since village took over. The businesses are closing one after the other because of the village high taxes they charged the business along with the other restrictions they have put upon them.

Also look at the way the village has wrecked our town and waterfront they took over 6 1/2 miles of waterfront and mariners from the MBPOA and neglected to take full charge after they sued the M B P O A and forced them out of waterfront land and mariners. Thank God the M B O P A still got the section 1 marina and it still looks good. Look at section 5 marina and the rest of the waterfront it is a

junk heap. The people with the signs that say yes to the village should look back at what a mess the village has created.

Many more houses are now abandoned and boarded up streets are dirtier now than ever from lack of them cleaning them. All they can do is to collect and also do as little as they can. I could go on forever about how the villege is doing less for us but the South Shore Press has little space for me to go on and on. Just think what you are doing with your signs just to please a few people that are in charge of the village. A GOOD DEAL RIGHT NOW IS TO DISOLVE THE VILLAGE and go back to the good way we had it before the village came to being. Let’s get rid of the village and all the money grabbers that ruin the once was a good town.

Sincerely, Jerry Riebe Mastic Beach Mastic Beach Village Dear Editor: Five and a half years ago, a group of concerned citizens came together because of a fervent belief that local control is vitally important to the future of Mastic Beach and that faith in controlling our own destiny will lead to a brighter future. This is what drove us to want to break away from the TOB, a place the size of the state of Rhode Island.

Mastic Beach, this jewel by the bay, should not be allowed to be used as a dumping ground by uncaring absentee landlords, content on collecting their rent without much concern for their neighbors or the overall community. Negligent landlords should be held accountable because the blight they cause affects everyone's property values and their daily quality of life. The Village has been successful in this fight, evidenced by the more than $120,000 in fines and fees collected this past year.

The ability to have a say in how government spending should be used, indeed that we have gotten any of it at all, is because we are a village. Those in favor of seeking dissolution are suggesting that we return to the indifference we endured for so many years and Brookhaven knows better about what is good for us than we know ourselves.

I am glad to be the squeaky wheel who has the ear of government officials in my role as a civic leader and citizen. Our association's members care deeply about quality of life issues, the future of waterfront and land use policy affecting our community, replenishing the dunes, having a say in storm resiliency plans and fighting for our fair share of government funding from NYS' NY Rising and federal plans for the Montauk to Fire Island Inlet storm resiliency project are just a few of the government agendas that we are involved in and committed to. Additionally, nearly 2,000 feral cats have been spayed or neutered by our O Cat committee members and volunteers in collaboration with ARF and Brookhaven's Animal Shelter. I am very proud of the volunteers who worked very hard to produce this year's Ninth Annual Harvest Festival to be held on Saturday, Sept. 17 on Neighborhood Road.

The most vocal person in favor of the dissolution of the Village lives in a private, gated community, not in the real world where I and others fight for a better life for family and friends and the future potential of our village.This mayor's past administration and control of the votes on the board brought excessive legal fees, audits, investigations, excesses in salaries and malfeasance with a $400,000 budget mistake which led to a deficit. Mayor Spery wanted to fix it by increasing taxes 125% and keeping her people employed. Not one dollar for QOL issues such as the demolition of seriously blighted houses. I and many of my neighbors would be glad to pay more taxes to improve our QOL! Don't allow the Town of Brookhaven to decide our future. Get the facts before you allow that to happen. Our coming together as a village is our only chance of achieving our potential.

EUGENE PERRY, JR. OF SHIRLEY ELECTED AS DIRECTOR OF STATE FIREMEN’S ASSOCIATION Eugene J. Perry, Jr., a 35-year veteran of the fire service, has been elected to his first fiveyear term as a Director of the Firemen’s Association of the State of New York (FASNY), at its 144th Annual Convention in Albany, NY this month.

Perry has been a member and delegate of FASNY since 1995 and has served on FASNY’s Membership Committee for eight years, including serving as Committee Chairman. He has been instrumental in increasing FASNY’s membership and benefits to the levels that they are today. He served diligently as a committee member of the 1999 and 2010 FASNY Conventions held in Suffolk County, for which he was Chairman of the opening ceremonies.

He previously served as the Assistant Sergeant-at-Arms for FASNY. He currently serves as Liaison to FASNY’s Ways and Means Committee, as well as to FASNY’s Youth in the Fire Service Committee. He also serves on FASNY’s committee for the 125th Anniversary of the FASNY Firemen’s Home in Hudson, NY. He is a dedicated member of the Van Guard Hose Company #1 of the Patchogue Fire Department. He has served as the company’s financial secretary for 17 years and is currently

serving as Trustee of the Van Guard Hose Company #1 benevolent fund.

Perry is also currently serving as 1st Vice President of the Brookhaven Town Volunteer Firemen’s Association. He is an active member and Past President of the Suffolk County Volunteer Firemen’s Association. In addition, he is a Past President and current Director of the Southern New York Volunteer Firemen’s Association, as well as an active member of the Suffolk County Drill Officials Association.

He has worked for the Village of Patchogue for the past 31 years as an Emergency Services Dispatcher, which dispatches the Patchogue FD, Patchogue Ambulance and Patchogue Village Code Enforcement.

Perry and his wife of 26 years, Kathy, have two children, Patrick, 24, and Christopher, 20, who are both members of the Brookhaven Fire Department.

by SUFFOLK COUNTY CLERK JUDY PASCALE BECOMING A NOTARY PUBLIC IN SUFFOLK COUNTY Suffolk County Clerk Judith Pascale is encouraging anyone who has considered becoming a Notary Public to visit www.SuffolkCountyNY.gov/clerk to learn more about the process.

A Notary Public is a state-appointed official who administers oaths and serves as an impartial witness when important documents are signed. A Notary Public most commonly administers oaths and affirmations but can also certify acknowledgements on documents such as deeds, mortgages or powers of attorneys. A Notary Public is commissioned to serve for four years.

"If you are eighteen years old, a citizen of the United States and either live or have an office in New York State, you are eligible to serve as a Notary Public," stated Suffolk County Clerk Judith A. Pascale. "Because you will need to pass an examination in order to serve, you should visit our office so that we can provide you with a copy of the Notary Public License Law study guide," continued Pascale.

The Notary Public Exam is a walk-in exam given regularly throughout New York State. In Suffolk County, the exam is administered by New York State Department of State in Hauppauge at the New York State Office Building located on Veteran's Highway. An appointment is not necessary; examinations are conducted on a "walk-in" basis. The Notary Public License Law can also be obtained from the New York Secretary of State’s website at www.dos.ny.gov/licensing/notary/notary.html.

The fee to take the exam is $15.00, due on the date of the exam, payable by check or money order to the "Department of State". Cash is not accepted.

The Office of the Suffolk County Clerk maintains records of all notaries public commissioned in Suffolk County and provides authentications of Notary Public signatures. In addition, Notary Public renewals are administered by our notary department. The public can visit the notary department located at 310 Center Drive in Riverhead between the hours of 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, excluding legal holidays.

I was alerted about this by a friend. Criminals are becoming more creative in finding a way to rob you. BE ALERT while you are driving your vehicle if someone throws an egg at your windshield. DO NOT use your wipers and do not use the wiper cleaner, it will make the egg milky, therefore, making you to have to pull over which makes you be a prime target for criminal’s misdeeds!

Be aware of your surroundings and drive safely.

Summer vacation sure went by fast. In the blink of an eye, school starts Tuesday, September 6th, which is the first day back to school for most kids.

Some parents will be teary-eyed while sending their little ones off to school after summer break or it may be their very first day of school entering kindergarten or first grade.

A message to those motorists who have to drive through a school zone: Please obey the posted school zone speed limit.

The Suffolk County Legislature held a hearing last year on speed light cameras and then, passed a resolution to seek approval from the state to install these devices outside local schools. The same legislation was approved in the Nassau County Legislature unanimously requesting state permission to install up to 56 of these cameras in school zones. Granted, this will bring in revenue to both counties, but what really is needed, is more police patrol within the school zones to curb drivers speeding in school zones with posted speed limits.

The Suffolk County Police Department will be placing out speed monitoring systems in the coming weeks in strategic areas to catch speeders. If you are pulled over for speeding in a school zone, I believe that is not only a fine you will have to pay, but it will be points on your driver’s license.

Please also be alert when a school bus displays their flashing lights, this is to alert a motorist to stop in both directions and wait for the discharge of children.

Chili Lime Shrimp Cups You Will Need: 24 wonton wrappers 2 tablespoons olive oil 24 medium shrimp, peeled and deveined 1/2 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon chile powder 2 limes 1/2 cup arugula 3 tablespoons sour cream Directions Preheat oven to 3500 degrees F. Prepare wonton shells. Lightly brush wontons with one tablespoon of olive oil. Arrange in 24 mini muffin/cupcake cups.

Toss shrimp with 1 tablespoon of olive oil, salt, two teaspoons of lime zest and chile powder. Bake five - eight minutes until shrimp are opaque throughout. To assemble, fill each baked wonton cup with a few leaves of arugula, a small dollop of sour cream, one shrimp then top with a spritz of lime juice.

Bake five - seven minutes until golden brown and crisp.

OBITUARIES Patricia Carroll, age 65, of Shirley, passed away peacefully on August 21, 2016. She is survived by her beloved husband James, her loving children; son James, and daughters Danielle Chadwick and Christine Carroll, her brother Joseph Hansman, and her sisters, Cathy Gusso, Eileen Yanatos, Mary Scipione, and Laurie DiPalma.

She also leaves behind eight grandchildren. Visitation was held at Sinnickson's Moriches Funeral Home. A funeral Mass was held at St. Jude RC Church in Mastic Beach and interment followed to Calverton National Cemetery.

Louis W. Cordeiro, age 65, of Center Moriches, passed away on August 22, 2016. He is survived by his beloved wife Kathleen, his loving daughters, Heather Reed, Nicole Kelly and Jaime Cordeiro, and his brother, Manuel Cordeiro. He also leaves behind his grandchildre, Isabella and Noah Reed, Kaitlin and Sean Kelly, and Teagan MacDonough.Visitation was held at Sinnickson's Moriches Funeral Home. Ronald John Jones, age 81, of Shirley, died after a valiant battle with his illness.

Ronald was born in Newark, New Jersey and proudly served in the United States Marine Corps from 1954 to 1962. He worked for many years in King Kullen. A true fishing enthusiast, he loved to go to the beach, and be outdoors. He was a life time member of the Mastic Beach Fire Department, the Marine Corps League and the St. Jude Shrine Knights of Columbus. He was predeceased by his cherished daughter Stephanie. is survived by his beloved wife of forty-four years Barbara and his loving daughter Cynthia. Family and friends were received at Roma Funeral Home in Shirley. Fr. Ron Richardson of St. Jude’s RC Church conducted wake services and a Mass was offered. Interment with military honors took place at Calverton National Cemetery.

Rosemarie Lasky, age 61, of Center Moriches, passed away on August 23, 2016. She is survived by her mother Marina Cruz, her sister Marina Ridley and her beloved niece. The family received loved ones and friends at Sinnickson's Moriches Funeral Home. Father Felix from St. John's RC Church officiated a prayer service at the funeral home. Interment was private.

Terry Opitz, age 63, of Center Moriches, passed away on August 16, 2016. A retired nutrition supervisor at Brookhaven Memorial hospital leaves his beloved son Jason Opitz of Georgia. Mr. Opitz was cremated under the supervision of Wesche Funeral Home Inc., Center Moriches.

A TRUE MARINE

A driving personality, unwavering courage and unshakeable patriotism, seem to be the hallmark traits of a US Marine. If only one word were required to define a Marine, it would be “dedicated”. Dedicated to the pursuit of freedom, the protection of liberty and unfailing honor. These are the men and women who are first on the ground in any conflict. Their specialized training makes them stronger, tougher and more disciplined than other groups.

Ronald John Jones, 1934 ~ 2016, was a true United States Marine. He lived by the Marine code of conduct. He was a man of integrity, with great devotion to God, family and country. A family man who cherished his wife Barbara for the past forty-four years.

He was the proud and loving father to his two adoring girls, Stephanie and Cynthia.

Ronnie and Barbara suffered a devastating blow when their beloved Stephanie died, but they held strong to their belief in the Lord and their love for each other.

A hard worker, Ronnie retired for the King Kullen Supermarket chain after many years. He was a simple man who enjoyed the gifts of the sea and nature. An avid fisherman, Ronnie, loved going to Smith’s Point and being at the beach.

Men like Ronnie Jones want and need to help others. He decided early on that he wanted to give back to his community. He promptly joined the Mastic Beach Fire Department and has been an active and steadfast member, having achieved the honorable status of life time member. It was there, with his brother firemen, that Ronnie found his second home.

Ronnie and his family have been devoted members of St. Jude’s Parish. He joined the Shrine Knights of Columbus and was always willing to help with the cause.

If there was one word to define Ronald John Jones it would be “Dedicated”. A true Marine to the end.

His family is asking that donations in his memory be made to the St. Jude’s Shrine Capital Campaign.

PLAZA MAC “DOWN ON THE FARM”

The Plaza Cinema & Media Arts Center held its first, very successful, outdoor screening of Buster Keaton and Charlie Chaplin silent films at the sprawling farm of Isabella Rossellini.

The beautiful Ms. Rossellini graciously took guests for a walk around and presentation of her farm’s varied programs which included sheep herding and the farms’ rare breeds of chickens. Afterwards everyone settled in to watch the outdoor presentation of the silent films.

The splendidly restored classic silent movies were accompanied by pianist Donald Sosin and performer Joanna Seaton, who lead everyone in a sing-a-long. Both Sosin and Seaton are among a select few who create and perform live music for classic silent films.

Hurricane Prep, Part II – The Boat

PICA, II COMMODORE FIRST DISTRICT, SOUTHERN REGION (D1SR) - UNITED STATES COAST GUARD AUXILIARY We’ve written a few times about what you should do to prepare for hurricanes, “hurry-canes” (as I call these squalls that blow through at 40-60mph and are gone in a ‘hurry’) and just good stiff blows… They were largely about what you and your family should do (like never stay on the boat nor drive through running water.) What about the boat? Tis the season of heavy weather.

This column is about that.

Let Me Say It Again…

Never stay on the boat. I know.

There are old timers that swear by it.

“I’ve saved my boat every time when others were lost.” With absolute certainty, it is simply because the winds – and seas – never exceeded the operational capacity of the engines. But when they do, you will be lost with the boat.

The boat is just money. You are someone. If you care about the people who care about you, read on – and leave the boat behind while you take your loved ones to high ground.

The Spider Web of Lines If you can’t get the boat out of the water and on to “the hard”, then you are compelled to protect her in her natural element – the water. But the sea presents forces magnified beyond the speed of the wind – it is the momentum of the wind-driven seas and the tidal surge.

The storm tide is added to the astronomical tides. And when those waves hit something solid, they generate force

dozens of times more powerful than wind of the same speed. Sandy generated a storm surge of 14 feet. Andrew generated a storm tide of 17 feet.

Camille in 1969? 24 feet.

While nothing will save the boat from that, the vast majority of storm-driven tidal surges are significant but really fractions of that. So, with a “spider web of lines”, you can create a fighting chance that your beauty will ride out the storm.

What is common to all these configurations is lots of lines and long expanses of them. In three of them, you can also see that multiple anchors are used as well. The longer lines are there to address the tidal surge. The additional lines are there for back-up. Losing one line to stress doesn’t completely undo everything you’ve done.

Chafe Guards Without doubt, you will need chafe guards of some kind since the storm will put extreme stresses on the lines where

they are wrapped around the cleats and chocks. Your ground tackle too will need additional chafe protection. Think of the storm as putting a summer’s worth of stress on your lines – for every hour of ‘blow.’ If you go through a set of lines every two summers, they will never withstand a half-day of a serious ‘blow.’ And that is assuming that they are new.

What to use? The universal winnertake-all is old garden hose. Lay the line through a length of hose and lay that through the chock or along the toe rail where your line crosses the gunwale on its way to a cleat on the dock. In a pinch, duct tape (a TON of it) works really well. And it is more pliable than garden hose. For the aficionados, they will hate it because it looks like hell – but it works.

BTW, while you can (now!), be sure that the cleats on the boat and on the dock are through-bolted with a backing plate.

If not, they will become high-speed guided missiles as they fly out of their bedding under strain. And the boat will be free… No garden hose? Improvise.

Leather straps. Rags. Anything helps, just some things help more than others.

Cut Your Windage Do whatever you can to lower the boat’s profile to the wind. Take down the bimini cover and lash it. If you can’t, open the windows. Take down the antennas. Even that little bit of additional windage can tip the balance. A sailboat?

I know I don’t need to say that you must stow all the sails, even the furled ones, below or ashore. If the boat has dorades or cowls, seal them. Wind – or wind-driven water – getting below at high speed can’t be good. Duct tape… And take in all the electronics and seal the boat’s electrical leads with tape.

Fenders and Fender Boards Yes. As many as possible, put them out. I always suggest that they be secured to the boat, rather than the dock.

If the boat does break free, at least she is taking some of her protection with her.

SUFFOLK CLOSEUP

Andrea Kalkstein Lieberman was driving east on the Long Island Expressway, approaching Manorville on Sunday, August 21, in the left-hand lane, when “three cars cut in front of me, zoomed around me so fast—and sped off weaving around cars. ” She gauged their speed at 90 miles per hour.

She said the three cars seemed to be playing “cat and mouse together.”

“A few minutes later,” Ms. Lieberman related, “traffic slowed down and I saw a huge cloud of dust ahead.” Then she passed the scene of the horrific event in which one of the eastbound cars had flown into the LIE’s westbound lane. Six persons died.

“They could have killed me,” said Ms. Lieberman, a businesswoman from Water Mill, and a friend. She called the Suffolk Police Department three times to provide an account of what she had witnessed.

The crash was a terrible tragedy. Among those killed were Scott Martella, communications director for the Suffolk County executive and previously a staffer for Governor Andrew Cuomo, and Isadore and Helen Adelson of Westhampton, who were on their way to a wedding. Also killed was Carmelo Pinales of Hicksville, driver of what police say was a speeding car that went out of control, careened across a grass median and went airborne and struck the autos that Mr. Martella and the Adelsons were in. Dead, too: Mr. Pinales’s son and a sister. Others were injured.

What Suffolk Police say was the cause—a speeding driver—is reflected in what I see regularly on the LIE. I drive 50 miles each way on the LIE, in Suffolk and Nassau Counties, heading to and returning from SUNY College at Old Westbury, where I teach.

I’ve been driving a Toyota Prius in recent years and thus can make use of the HOV lane that covers most of the stretch—and like the lane not only for its lighter volume but because it provides somewhat of a separation from the scene in the regular lanes.

On the average, every other day I see one, two or three maniacal drivers racing at 80 miles an hour and more, weaving through traffic in those lanes.

To them it seems, the LIE is a racetrack despite it often being congested. And they endanger the lives of so many people as they zoom in and out, cutting in front of cars and trucks and rocketing ahead in wild zig-zags.

It’s reckless driving at its worst.

Some of these drivers are caught. But in my experience, it isn’t so often that I see one of these dangerous road-racers having been pulled off to the side of the LIE by police.

Among recent articles on these characters—at least those who have been caught—was one in July about an 18-year-old Deer Park woman charged with speeding on the LIE at over 110 miles per hour and making “multiple unsafe lane changes without signaling,” according to the police report.

In June, a 23-year-old Bronx man was arrested for racing his car at more than 100 miles per hour on the LIE. He was caught because a video was posted on YouTube and Facebook by another one of the drivers

The ‘TOAST’ of Patchogue

doing high-speed cat-and-mouse with him on the LIE. “Police said they believe at least three drivers were racing as they headed to a car show,” stated the story on the WCBS/2-TV website. The video proudly presented the cars weaving through LIE traffic at high speed.

Startling was the paragraph in the article in which Nassau County Police Commissioner Thomas Krumpter (a SUNY Old Westbury graduate) said only misdemeanor charges could be brought “because state lawmakers have been unable to agree on measures upgrading reckless speeding as a felony.”

After the Manorville tragedy, I used Google to explore whether New York State—with its governmental dysfunction—was alone in not coming down hard on this madness.

It is not. Reckless driving is just a misdemeanor in states throughout the U.S. The penalty can be up to a year in jail—the maximum for misdemeanors nationally—but in many states it is far less: as little as five days, 30 days, 90 days, and so on. In New York State it is 30 days for the first offense. There are also fines and driver’s license suspension or revocation.

But for these characters on our highways, the penalties should be much, much tougher.

In their hands, motor vehicles constitute instruments of murder.

Moreover, policing must be much stronger on the LIE. Governments have budget constraints. But, surely, a major push to apprehend those who make the LIE so dangerous to drive on—especially by providing unmarked police cars regarded by those in law enforcement as so important to catch reckless speeders—is a top priority.

As one person commented on the News 12 Long Island website about the June videotaped road race on the LIE: “The insensitivity and ignorance of these drivers is criminal. The death toll on our Long Island highways has reached epidemic proportions.”

How To Choose The Right Dance Shoes You have taken a few ballroom dance lessons and are starting to get more serious about dancing. It's time to look into purchasing some dance shoes! A pair of quality dance shoes, with its special construction and materials, will help you learn better and dance longer. Below are 5 important things to consider when choosing the right dance shoes.

1. MAKE SURE IT FITS LIKE A GLOVE When you first try on a pair of dance shoes, make sure they fit snugly without excessive pressure. This will give you the most control of your shoes even after they are broken in. I usually go a half or full size down for my dance shoes.

2. OPEN TOE VS. CLOSED TOE Generally, open toe shoes are designed for Latin and rhythm dances, such as Salsa, Rumba and swing, which require more pointing of the toes and articulation of the feet. The opening in the shoes allows you to point your toes easier and execute footwork more precisely.

Closed toe shoes are designed for smooth/standard dances, such as Foxtrot and Waltz, as these dances require a more traditional classic look. Unless you are focusing on a particular dance style, beginning dancers can pretty much choose any style you'd like. Though, when you first learn to dance, it's almost inevitable to get stepped on once in a while, so you may consider getting closed toe shoes as they provide some protection for your pedicured toes :) 3. HEEL HEIGHTS The heel height for Latin and ballroom dance shoes ranges from 1.5" to 3". For

beginning dancers, you should choose a heel height that gives you the most comfort. If you are not accustomed to wearing heels, you may want to start with shoes that have a lower heel to start with. Also, there are different shapes of heel, such as slim and flared. A flared heel is a popular choice as it gives you more stability.

For men's dance shoes, a 1" heel is designed for ballroom dance styles while a 1.5" Cuban heel is designed for Latin dance styles. Unless you are participating in dance competitions, a 1" heel is generally sufficient for both ballroom and Latin dancing.

4. SUEDE SOLE SHOES It is recommended to have a suede sole for your dance shoes. The suede sole gives you the right amount of slip and traction so that you can feel more balanced and have more control when turning and moving around the dance floor.

Every once in a while, you need to brush the suede sole with a wire dance shoe brush to maintain its roughness.

5. BUYING DANCE SHOES ONLINE VS. IN STORE Whether you order shoes online or purchase them in a store, I suggest you first go to a dance supply store to try on some shoes. Since sizing can vary from brand to brand, it is best to try and compare various brands, sizes and models to ensure you find the right fit.

Elite Dancers, Elite Family, Elite Friends The 2016-2017 dance season marks the 25th Anniversary of Elite Dancers. Originally owned and operated by Camille and Dottie Fortier for 21 years, the studio is entering its 4th season under the ownership of Katie and Donna Smith. Katie grew up in the William Floyd School District and takes great pride in owning a business in the community she grew up in and being able to give back to that community. Having the support of family and the community allows Katie to continue to share her love of dance with every dancer who enters our doors.

Elite Dancers continues to be a safe and familyoriented place for dancers of all ages to come and learn to express themselves through dance and movement. We offer Pre-School and Primary Tap/Ballet Combos for children ages 3years – 7years. These dancers perform both genres in the recital because it is our belief that even the youngest dancers should take pride in all they’ve learned for that dance year. In addition, we offer Ballet, Tap, Jazz, Lyrical, Hip Hop and Musical Theatre for ages 7years and older as well as Contemporary for 11years and older. We also have a Regional and National Award Winning Competition Team that takes great pride in everything they accomplish through their hard work and determination.

It is because of Elite Dancers family-oriented atmosphere of love and respect that we are fortunate to have a teaching staff that is “homegrown”. Our award winning staff, Katie Smith, Donald Aversa, Kayla Tauby, Ashley Czarnecki, Amanda Delvecchio and Samantha Favia all grew up in this community and have spent most of their lives dancing at Elite Dancers as well as now teaching there.

Our hard working and dedicated staff is devoted to bringing the best dance education possible to your dancer but more importantly they strive to teach your child strength, confidence and pride in themselves and what they’ve accomplished. In this very

The unsung heroes of Elite Dancers include the office staff. Donna Smith, the office manager, Teresa Echeverria and Mary Ann Roach work diligently to make sure families feel welcome. They take pride in answering questions, addressing any parent concerns and being very knowledgeable. The office staff work together with the teaching staff on student placement to make sure all dancers are comfortable in their classes.

It is a privilege to teach our dancers not only dance technique but also to instill some life lessons

along the way. In class our dancers learn dance technique, but we also try to teach how to share, communicate, be patient and problem solve if needed.

Above all we make this a fun and rewarding experience for each child.

Studio East Dance Center Studio East officially opened its doors in 2012 and has had overwhelming success since its first curtain rise.

Known as a dance studio that truly feels like home, the studio welcomes dancers ages 1 ½ through Adults, and offers all students professional and diverse instruction from accomplished teachers. This past year at Nationals nearly every group dance competed and scored a perfect 5 Stars, making it into the top ten overall highest scored dances in their respective categories. These dance competitions not only highlight the dedication and hard work of all students, but showcase how the teams work together to motivate and support each other, walking away with pride no matter which trophy is in hand.

The Studio East experience extends outside the studio and into the community. Dancers participate in local parades such as the Riverhead Holiday Parade and Westhampton St. Patty’s Day parade, where they rely on teamwork to build award-winning floats (1st place in 2015)!

They’ve had the honor of performing at the grand opening of a car dealership in Riverhead, and the owner, Erin Judd, is always seeking out community events to which dancers can bring their spirit. Students also indulge in the art of

dance by visiting the city via field trips at least twice a year where they take workshops by professional choreographers and see Broadway shows that inspire and entertain. These events all serve to broaden the dance experience, developing not only one’s technical skills as a ballerina or tapdancer but serving to develop social skills, tapping into culture and community-service, and building confidence - ultimately cultivating a well-rounded personality that carries on into adulthood.

Not only are the teachers top notch, the dance programs’ rigorous yet fun, but the studio space itself is designed to bring out the best in each student. The fully operational dance studio is 1200 square feet - the size of an actual stage so that each dancer has enough space to express themselves. I am in my sixties and have an estate worth approximately $800,000.00. My current Last Will and Testament disinherits my estranged son. Is a Revocable Trust something I should consider?

Answer: A Revocable Living Trust is a trust that you create during your lifetime and is great tool for those who wish to avoid the probate process. A Revocable Trust is designed to give you, as the grantor (creator) great flexibility. With a Revocable Trust, you may act as your own trustee. This allows you to maintain complete control over your assets during your lifetime.

With a Revocable trust, assets can be freely transferred in and out of the trust. You can also change or revoke the trust at any time and make all decisions regarding the Trust. Assets commonly transferred into these trusts include residences and investments such as bank accounts, certificates of deposit, stocks and bonds.

In the event of your incapacity, a Revocable Trust can provide for a seamless transition for the management of your affairs. The person(s) you have selected as successor or co-trustee would simply take over the management of those assets titled in the name of the trust, possibly avoiding the need for a Property Management Guardian.

Even though the initial cost to create a Revocable Trust may be more than the cost of executing a Last Will and Testament, spending the money to do a trust now may save your family money in the long run since trusts avoid the probate process.

Probate is the process wherein a Last Will and Testament is admitted to Surrogate’s Court. Like any court process, it costs money and can delay the process if an heir is being disinherited. Should probate be required in order to administer your estate, even though you have chosen to disinherit him, your son will be given notice of the proceeding and an opportunity to challenge your will. Although your wishes may still be upheld, navigating through the process can be costly and time consuming, resulting in a smaller inheritance and delay for your intended beneficiaries. With a trust, unlike a probate proceeding, there is no notification required when a trust is administered. Your trustee can simply distribute the assets as you have set forth in the trust agreement.

When considering your estate planning, it is important to note that, a Revocable Living Trust does not protect your assets for purposes of Medicaid eligibility. How to best structure your individual estate plan is an important and personal decision, which you should discuss with your estate planning attorney before making any final decisions.
