In about a year’s time, sentiment around data centers has soured both locally and nationally.

La Pine residents seem to be connecting the dots.

I

t’s too soon to tell the fate of the proposed data center in an industrial park in La Pine, but if local action and national sentiment are any indication, approval of the project looks iffy.

According to Source reporting, a company called Boxminer, which “mines” bitcoin, is seeking to build a data center on a 19.5-acre plot. The project proposal says it will bring 100 construction jobs, “up to 200 full time hi tech value” jobs with salaries from $60,000 to $180,000, and about $1.2 million in property tax revenues for the City of La Pine. If the project goes well, project documents show, the company has interest in other sites in the industrial park.

Had this been a few years ago, those figures may have been enough to put stars in the eyes of the people of La Pine. But nowadays, Americans are getting more sophisticated in their knowledge of the promise and problems a data center can present. While there’s no talk of that yet here, these facilities typically angle for subsidies or tax breaks — even while the “good jobs” that continue long-term at a data center are few.

We’ve seen that at the Prineville facilities, where after construction, relatively few jobs remain. Just this week, Meta made cuts in Prineville.

Americans, whose power bills have gone up astronomically in the last several years, are waking up to the fact that data centers that fuel the new demand for artificial intelligence are hogging massive amounts of power — and that the cost is often being passed onto consumers. In La Pine, the Boxminer project proposal states it plans to use 20 megawatts of power, and hopes for more if “future load allocations become available.” Twenty megawatts can power 16,000 homes. La Pine itself had roughly 1,070 households as of the 2020 Census — so the power needs for that 20-acre data center property would be roughly 15 times the current needs of the entire town. According to its website, the electric provider, Midstate Electric Cooperative, serves 21,000 “meters” in the region.)

In Oregon, legislators not long ago set new limits on the rate increases that can be passed onto consumers, and this month, the Oregon Public Utility Commission created new rules that require large data centers to bear more of the costs they create.

That legislation didn’t apply to co-ops.

Midstate states on its website that data centers will pay for their own expansion costs. Then again, in this scenario there’s no guaranteeing they won’t also be forced to raise rates, when demand at the co-op nearly doubles from one customer. Midstate doesn’t currently have any data centers in its profile, and there’s always the risk of unforeseen costs.

In terms of public sentiment, it seems the tide has turned. According to a poll released in March by the Pew Research Center, 43% of those polled believed that “data centers using more energy” was a major reason for the increase in home energy costs over the last few years. Some 39% viewed data centers as “mostly bad” for the environment. (In the same poll, 25% said the centers were “mostly good” for jobs.)

The issue has become so front-andcenter, that it’s bridging the bipartisan divide, with both Republicans and Democrats coming together to fight new data centers in their areas. In a May 1 article in The New York Times, a Wisconsin comedian called data centers “the most bipartisan issue since beer.”

But even beyond that concern around electric rates, we see another potential reason for the vehement opposition to the proposal in La Pine: Gas prices. Many people in La Pine already spend a lot of money driving to work, with a 24.6-minute average commute time. With prices skyrocketing due to the Iran war, any notion of an increase in power rates is going to upset people. La Pine residents are clearly connecting the dots.

The opposition brewing in La Pine introduces a good lesson for local leaders across the region: In the current environment, any whiff of raising fees is not going to go down easy.

Likewise for sea level change. The EPA study used methods that pre-dated the more recent USGS data that now shows that roughly half of sea level rise in the USA was from subsidence. So, the EPA model used inappropriately, and questionable damage assessments led to the single number that the entire “Bend Climate Fee” rests on.

Even at 20% of the EPA model, the CO2 impact on Bend is likely to be less.

Bend doesn’t have an extremely hot climate, is far from the sea, has very little agriculture, and has vast forested land nearby to sequester CO2. If Bend homeowners will be obliged to pay a fee, then they should know exactly how it is calculated. 20% times something that is wrong does not make it correct. If the errors in the cornerstone calculation are not recognized then Bend will be open to criticism and even legal action.

Contact the Council and ask for a public question and answer session and ask why a reward program for residential rooftop solar panels, which will not have grid issues has not been considered.

WHY DO SOME PEOPLE OBJECT TO THE FRANKLIN AVENUE PROJECT

In its March 26th “pee tunnel” opinion piece, the Source asked the above question. Here are why some people object to this project. “Some people” factcheck.

First, this project does not eliminate the “pee tunnel.” Pedestrians and bicyclists will still use the tunnel, and the tunnel will still provide a location for individuals to relieve themselves.

The April 7 open house listed safer walking and biking as the main benefit of the Franklin Avenue project. Bicyclists get “buffered bike lanes,” but the only other design measure is more paint at intersections.

Action Plan which said, “89% of crashes occur within 250 feet of an intersection.” Franklin will end up being a less safe street because adding paint doesn’t offset the bad driving or bad bicycling from increased congestion as the Greenwood Avenue pilot road diet proved. Also, the design fails to address the poor sight distance on both sides of the overpass. Then the designers added on-street parking spaces which increases the number of potential “conflicts points” and violates the Transportation System Plan’s mobility goal #9.

The designers demonstrate “tunnel vision” by focusing on buffered bike lanes when thinking “outside the tunnel” would lead to a safer design. Here is a safer design. This is one of the “just the facts” studies posted on Accountability4Bend.com, an educational website providing data-driven factchecking to the city’s vision-driven agenda.

THE HIGH COST OF GASLIGHTING BEND

The collective meltdown over Bend’s proposed Climate Pollution Fee is as predictable as a July haze over the Cascades. For decades, we’ve allowed developers to hook our future to a fossil fuel respirator while pretending “natural gas” isn’t just a slow-motion arson of the High Desert. The mental gymnastics required to oppose this fee are truly Olympic-grade. Opponents are performing backflips to regurgitate the same tired oil and gas industry propaganda that has been debunked for years.

It takes a staggering amount of cognitive dissonance to claim you care about “affordability” while fighting to keep residents tethered to the fluctuating prices of a dying industry.

Let’s be clear about the actual mechanics here: the goal of this policy is for builders to choose efficient electric construction from the start and avoid the climate fee altogether. It’s an invitation to be part of the climate solution. This isn’t a “shakedown”— it’s a long-overdue invoice for those who refuse to evolve. To the local suits whining about “energy choice,” let’s be real: the only choice they’re defending is the freedom to lock families into a volatile, methane-leaking monopoly while our Ponderosas turn to kindling.

We are living in a powder keg, and this fee is the fire suppressant we need. We should be using that revenue to pull heat pumps out of the dreams of the working class and put them into their living rooms. We aren’t just building houses; we’re building a fortress against a heating planet. If a developer can’t find $2,100 to offset the carbon debt they’re tattooing onto our skyline, perhaps they should just make the right choice in the first place.

The era of noxious, dirty hookups is dead. It’s time we stopped subsidizing the apocalypse and started building a town powered by the sun and the wind.

City Council, stand your ground. Keep the fee, ignore the industry scripts, and let’s get on with the electric revolution.

For over a year, the Bend Council has been working to “...promote welfare and reduce economic cost to Bendites by mitigating the impacts associated with fossil fuel emissions...” Incentives have been proposed to reduce CO2 emissions from gas by electrifying new homes in Bend. Using the EPA’s 2023 “Social Cost of Carbon” ($ of damage per ton of CO2 emissions from burning natural gas) as the cornerstone, the calculated environmental damage of running gas appliances equals (SCC) *(CO2 tons per appliance/ year) * (life of appliance).

Once realizing how expensive the nominal fee would be per house ($9,771), only 20% of that number ($1,954) will be the proposed fee for new homes. An admin. fee of $362,153 /yr is predicted.

But when projected out 10 years, considering initial investment and fuel costs, electric is likely to be more expensive than gas. And currently the majority of incremental electricity in Oregon is still generated by burning gas, so switching to electricity at this point will actually result in MORE CO2 emissions, with less efficiency and further burden a constrained grid. Oregon HB 2021 mandates that Pacific Power increase the percent of their renewable generated electricity from 19% (2024) to 85% by 2030. The whisper is that it can’t be done. And that is the case around the world.

Another problem is that the EPA SCC model is a global cost model and not appropriate for local areas. Under the EPA model, a release of a ton of CO2 in Bend will do damage somewhere in the world. But for many reasons that CO2 may not do the same damage in Bend.

Shortly after the 2023 EPA study release, researchers found that the data in the agricultural impact section that had predicted significant damage was in error. After correction there was no damage to agricultural productivity due to CO2 and even a small improvement.

New Landfill Site Recommended

The Deschutes County Solid Waste Advisory Committee voted 7 to 1 Tuesday, May 19 to recommend a site about 20 miles east of Bend as the next landfill location. It will go before Deschutes County Commissioners in June. Horse Ridge is a partial gravel mine that’s also a federal recreation area and trail system. If approved, the county would have to negotiate with three landowners — Knife River, Oregon Department of Transportation and Horse Ridge Properties. The current Knott Landfill is expected to reach capacity and close in 2031. Deschutes County Solid Waste Director Jeff Merwin told the Source he hopes to begin construction of a new landfill in 2028-29 providing there are no delays in the permitting process. If the timeline does not work out, the county may have to haul garbage to a landfill in another county in the interim.

Red Light Camera Citations Delayed Bend police have delayed issuing citations for violators of the red-light cameras. A post on Facebook states the agency needs more time to test how citations flow between police, Bend Municipal Court and Deschutes County 911. Warnings will continue being sent to drivers who speed or go through red lights where the cameras are located at NE 27th and Neff Road and on SE Third Street at Reed Market and Powers Road. The cameras were turned on April 15. Citations were expected to begin May 15.

Police say between April 23 and May 7, 680 warnings were issued.

After Pushback to La Pine Data Center, Community, Developers Await Next Steps Key details of the proposal remain unclear

fter dozens of people packed La Pine City Hall on May 13 in an uproar against a proposed data center, it’s unclear where City leaders and developers stand on the project.

The public comment period at the meeting took nearly three hours, with most people in opposition, citing fears the facility would guzzle water, push up power costs, hurt wildlife habitat and the overall quality of life in La Pine without providing a substantial economic boost.

The pushback comes as communities across the country voice similar concerns over new data centers — massive computer storage and processing facilities driven by a boom in demand for artificial intelligence.

Other Central Oregon cities, including Prineville, are already home to data centers.

As developers eye land in the La Pine Industrial Park, the City Council has the initial say as to whether to sell it off.

Some commenters at the May 13 meeting were alarmed that they weren’t notified when the City Council directed staff March 25 to “move forward with the purchase and sale process” for 20 acres of land in the industrial park to a data center development company, Boxminer.

According to City Manager Geoff Wullschlager, that “non-binding” decision was far from closing on a sale. Instead, Wullschlager’s task was to study the proposal.

“We’re just doing our due diligence without fear or favor, trying to be benign on this,” Wullschlager told the Source on Monday. “The community having a strong opinion on this certainly makes an impact with the Council.”

The public pushback seems to have made an impact on developers, too.

“I’m not sure there will ever be a data center in La Pine after last night’s meeting and the land sale has not yet been approved by the city, so I think its best to hold off discussing anything specific about La Pine,” Boxminer CEO Jeff Keller wrote in a LinkedIn message to the Source on May 14.

Some details about the proposal remain unclear — even for City officials.

According to Keller, the data center would cool itself with a “closed loop” system, which recirculates cooling liquid instead of consuming and evaporating water. But Wullschlager said the company hasn’t provided specific examples of how

the technology has worked in other facilities. Wullschlager said it’s been difficult to find experts to weigh in on other parts of the proposal.

When asked how large the data center building would be, Keller wrote, “Let’s see if the project gets approved.”

“Here to create jobs” Wullschlager provided the City Council with a summary of Boxminer’s proposal in a March 25 memo. It says the company would purchase the land for $1.5 million — half of which goes to the City, the other half to Deschutes County, which must also sign off on the deal — and site construction would cost $286 million.

The memo states that would generate 100 construction jobs and up to 200 “full time ‘hi tech value’ jobs with salaries ranging from $60K-$180K.” Keller told the Source the facility would generate 50 full-time jobs initially, but “with more power, this could grow significantly,” Keller said.

“We are here to create jobs in the community,” Keller said during public testimony at the May 13 City Council meeting. “A data center is a clean factory with no pollution, very little noise — a lot less noise than the sawmill and the freight train — and a positive effect on the community.”

The promise of jobs and capital investment is a big reason why Sunriver-La Pine Economic Development recommended the project earlier this year, said executive director Patricia Lucas. The group helps find new tenants at the park, a swath of land owned by Deschutes County designated for industrial development before the City was incorporated in 2006.

“If it’s a business that’s eligible

for the industrial park and they’re going to make a positive economic impact, that’s a good part of the basis for a decision and recommendation,” Lucas said.

Wullschlager said Boxminer also hasn’t backed up its claims of new jobs, which can vary significantly based on the type of facility. New data centers do stimulate overall job growth by 4% to 5% over five to six years, according to new research by the Brookings Institute. A recent economic study attributed significant job and wage growth in Prineville to data centers. But a Prineville data center with ties to Meta this month planned to lay off 66 workers, according to KLCC. And more jobs in an expanded facility would depend on more access to power. According to the City, La Pine-based Midstate Electric Cooperative can guarantee at least 20 megawatts of power for the data center. That’s enough to power 16,000 homes, according to Lewis & Clark Law School.

State utility regulators have ordered data centers to pay more for electricity under Oregon legislation passed last year, but that rule doesn’t apply to co-ops, which are customer-owned and purchase power directly from the Bonneville Power Administration.

Midstate did not return voicemails from the Source. A statement on the company’s website says large new power users — including data centers — are responsible for covering the cost of power infrastructure upgrades required to handle new electricity loads.

Since ‘de-Flocking,’ Bend Officials Circle a New Vendor for Surveillance Cameras, With No Plans for Public Input

hen the Bend City Council voted to turn off its four Flock Safety stationary Automated License Plate Readers on Jan. 7, Bend Police Capt. Brian Beekman said the department would look for an alternate vendor that could provide similar technology in fighting crime.

Several months later, the department is eyeing cameras from Axon, the same leading surveillance company that has provided Bend PD with in-vehicle ALPR cameras, body cameras and tasers since the Council approved the five-year contract in 2022. Tacking on the additional service and hardware wouldn’t involve a new contract — only an amendment of the one already in place. The data would seamlessly sync with systems already in use, City Manager Eric King detailed in a May 1 report to the City Council, reviewed by the Source.

Automated License Plate Readers are AI-powered, scanning and cataloging license plate numbers, along with vehicle make, model and color, which help cops track people who are wanted for crimes. Axon and Bend PD will evaluate two demonstration ALPR units and begin a phased installation of ALPR cameras at entry and exit points in Bend in the coming year, King indicated in his report.

What worries privacy advocates, and at least one city councilor, is that the city manager would make a decision about something so divisive without input from the Council nor the public. Addressing privacy concerns, Gov. Tina Kotek signed Senate Bill 1516 into law on March 31. The new law prohibits Oregon law enforcement agencies from sharing resources, such as data, with federal immigration authorities and set standards for data encryption, among other mandates.

Regarding the new cameras, Bend Police Chief Mike Krantz told the Source in a statement on May 18 that “no decisions have been made and no movement forward has taken place at this time.”

As King detailed in his report, the stationary Axon ALPR cameras would replace the four Flock Safety cameras that had been situated at two intersections of Highway 97 for seven months. Reporting by the Source on May 6 illustrated how federal immigration authorities had violated state sanctuary laws by querying Bend PD’s Flock database 279 times in June 2025, due to a Bend PD user error that left the national lookup option in its default on-setting.

Yet a police department’s stated compliance with Oregon sanctuary laws is not a technological safeguard against federal immigration authorities’ overreach, as the Flock situation demonstrated.

King noted in his report that a recent $19,000 grant from the Oregon Criminal Justice Commission would cover some of the costs of re-installing this stationary ALPR technology, with an emphasis on tracking organized retail crime and theft. Yet it’s not clear how much beyond that grant amount the City would pay, nor how extensive the stationary ALPR program would grow to be.

Bend City Councilor Gina Franzosa tells the Source that the City’s decision to deepen its relationship with Axon should be one the Council discusses publicly before voting.

carefully consider our policy around surveillance cameras,” Franzosa said. “If the police department wishes to move forward, we should have a public discussion and give the public a chance to comment.”

According to City code, the city manager, along with certain other officials, may add up to $250,000 to a preexisting contract that has been approved by the Council, such as the five-year $679,500 contract with Axon. More than 70 Bend PD cruisers have rolled with ALPRequipped Fleet 3 Camera systems since July 2023.

Neither King nor Mayor Melanie Kebler responded to our inquiry about whether the matter would be put before the City Council, where both councilors and the public could formally weigh in.

A new tiered water rate structure is one strategy to help curtail summer water use

igh water users in Redmond might pay more in the future as the City looks to incentivize conservation amid declining groundwater levels and rapid population growth.

The Redmond City Council began a discussion Monday about adopting a tiered water rate structure, which would apply increasingly higher rates to each portion of water used beyond a certain threshold.

Those exact thresholds still need to be hashed out by the Redmond City Council. Based on Monday’s discussion, the City Council could adopt the new rate structure this summer, but it likely wouldn’t go into effect until 2027. ke an According to City officials, the tiered rate would likely come into play during the summer months, when the average Redmond household water use jumps by a factor of four, according to the City.

“In the irrigation season, people use a lot of water. That’s where our problem is,” Redmond Mayor Ed Fitch said during Monday’s meeting. “Unless you have some incentive to reduce that volume of use, we’re really not making any headway.”

After tracking steady declines in the rain and snow-fed aquifer below Central Oregon, from which Redmond pumps its groundwater, Oregon water regulators drafted new rules making it unlikely that future requests to increase pumping in the Deschutes Basin will be approved. Redmond officials believe the City has enough water under its current permit to handle growth for the next 15 to 20 years but hope conservation efforts will stretch water even further.

Joshua Wedding, Redmond’s public works operations manager, told the Council the City is on track to

reach a goal to reduce water use by 10% in the next 10 years, all based on voluntary compliance. In the last 10 years, the City has introduced new software allowing residents to closely track water use, offered free showerheads, toilet tank bags, gauges and shower timers to save water. It also offers a rebate program for people who purchase efficient sprinkler heads and irrigation controls.

The University of Oregon did a study on tiered water rates for the City in 2016, according to the City’s 2023 Water Conservation and Management Plan, but the City Council opposed the policy at the time.

None of the councilors spoke in opposition on Monday.

“We need to do it,” Councilor Cat Zwicker said.

Wedding, the public works director, presented an example of how the tiered structure might change bills for customers who use a lot of water, especially through outdoor irrigation. In the example, the water bill for a 5,400-squarefoot lot watering every day would jump from about $122 to around $149 during peak water use in July, and see $10 to $20 increases during other summer months. During the winter, when water use islower, there would be virtually no difference between a tiered rate and the current structure.

The City’s proposed budget for next year also includes a 5% standard water rate increase, or a few dollars a month for many customers.

Wedding told the Source on Tuesday the City plans to sink additional revenue from the tiered water rate structure back into the rebate program for sprinkler heads and irrigation controls.

The Central Oregon community is going to “Come Together” for the fabled and fabulous KPOV radio station and its 21st “Birthday” Beatles Sing-Along on Friday, June 26, from 7-10pm.

“Why Don’t We Do It In the Road?”

Nah! There’s a much better location at The The Commonwealth Pub in Bend. This happening is a fundraiser for community radio station KPOV, 88.9FM, which is volunteer powered and listener supported.

Tickets are for sale on the KPOV website — kpov.org — with early ticket discount until June 1. This popular event, returning for the first time since 2019, will likely sell out, so advance ticket purchase is recommended.

This will be a high-energy, family friendly event featuring a handful of local bands, each playing a set of different Beatles songs, culminating with the PNW’s premiere Beatles cover band, JuJu Eyeball, performing a set. Song lyrics will be displayed on the large TV screens spread throughout The The Commonwealth Pub so that everyone can sing along — ‘60s attire is welcomed, so break out those tie-dyes and bell bottoms!

There will also be fun Beatles trivia, a selection of premium raffle items donated by local businesses and a silent auction of biddable items, including a lodging package valued at $1,100.

“We’re really excited to continue the tradition of hosting this event which brings together supporters of KPOV and Beatles fans alike in an uplifting and positive celebration,” says KPOV Board of Directors President Tim Cotter. “KPOV is sincerely grateful for all of the community support we have received from our

loyal listeners and business partners for the past 21 years.”

KPOV’s first fundraiser Beatles Sing-Along was held in 2009, organized by the late Rick Miller, one of the founders of KPOV. The radio station began broadcasting live as a low-power station from its modest studios at 501 NW Bond St. in downtown Bend on June 26, 2005.

POV stands for Point of View. In 2007, KPOV became the first local radio station to stream all its content online. Today, the station can be streamed on its website and on the free KPOV app.

Along with about 50 locally produced programs, KPOV also broadcasts live local, regional and national music events such as the Bend Roots Revival, the Riverfront Blues Festival from Portland and the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival. There’s a transmitter and antenna atop Pine Mountain, reaching to Redmond, Sisters, Prineville, Terrebonne and rural Central Oregon.

KPOV is a 24-hour, community effort, with a minimal paid staff and dozens of behind-the-scenes volunteers, including DJs, who all donate their time and energy. Locally produced music and talk shows cover local affairs, public health, national and international news, astrology and just about every genre of music.

Several KPOV shows are syndicated nationally, while other shows attract an international following.

orn and raised in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and now based in Fort Collins, Colorado, musician Dominick Antonelli says he is “beyond excited” to venture into the Pacific Northwest for the first time this summer. More specifically, he is excited to perform on Aug. 5 at General Duffy’s Waterhole in Redmond.

Antonelli says he also performs in yoga classes, local gigs around Colorado and workshops in which he incorporates “live music, meditation, group energy healing and writing into one experience.”

Checking in with the Source through email, he says he views himself “not as a guitar player, but an artist who utilizes the guitar and other forms to create an inspiring, healing, and contemplative experience for himself and listeners.” Antonelli has a background in integrative health and is currently studying Music and Recording Arts Technology.

When asked what the Redmond audience might expect from his performance, he says, “Oftentimes it sounds like there are two guitars playing at once. I use alternative tunings which often allow for a very full, encompassing sound with melodic textures over top. People have shared that they enjoy how my music feels organic and intuitive, rather than intellectual and theory driven.

For me, it feels like a journey every time I get on stage and there are usually people in the audience who join in on the journey. People have shed tears, feeling moved and impacted in ways that bring inspiration and hope.

I like to dance and really get into the

performance, as well as tell stories and engage with the audience.”

Antonelli says he began playing guitar when he was 12. He has been writing original music for 15 years.

“Playing guitar has been, and still is a form of therapy for myself. It allows me to enter into a space of timelessness, where I connect to a version of life that I have yet to find anywhere else. I play a mix of instrumental and vocal pieces that have been inspired by my travels, meditation and contemplative moments in my life.”

The worldly musician has also lived in Thailand, Costa Rica, Florida, New Jersey and Michigan. He says his parents introduced him to music when he was very young. “My earliest memories are listening to ‘Black Muddy River,’ ‘Touch of Grey’ and ‘When Push Comes to Shove’ (all Grateful Dead songs) in my dad’s truck going to learn how to ride my bike. My mom took me to James Taylor for my first concert — or America, I can’t quite recall.” He adds, “But I did go through quite a lot of trauma in my early years from 3 to 8-ish with domestic violence, sexual trauma, lots of addiction around me. So the guitar was a way for me to work out a lot of the things I didn’t know how to vocalize and shoved away.”

Judging from the talent on display in his YouTube videos, Antonelli has fashioned music to his advantage in the best possible way.

THE SISTERS FOLK FESTIVAL CONTINUES PUTTING ON A GOOD TIME

he 29th Sisters Folk Festival will feature more than 30 diverse musical groups from all over the world. Organizers say the lineup redefines what folk music really means. “’Folk’ can be a polarizing word,” Communication Manager Erin Pihl says. “I think people still tend to think of the genre of folk music as old-timey... At SFF we try to break that mold and showcase artists that represents the full array of roots music.”

The event, Sept. 25-27, will be held in the heart of Sisters at seven venues including Sisters Art Works, Village Green, Oliver Lemon’s, The Belfry, Sisters Depot, Open Door and Sisters Saloon. The smallest venue has a capacity of 200, while the largest is 1,400.

Some of the highlights this year include Grammy Award winning Tommy Emmanuel from Australia who’s been dubbed one of the best acoustic guitarists in the world.

Inspired by his mentor Chet Atkins, he set out as a solo artist in 1979 touring with greats like Eric Clapton and John Denver. Singer/songwriter Brandy Clark made the New York Times list of “30 Greatest American Songwriters.” Ozomatli will bring Latin, hip-hop and funk to Sisters. Performing for more than 30 years, the band continues creating new music that celebrates unity,

resilience and joy. Thunderstorm Artis is a singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist who was a finalist on Season 18 of “The Voice” and has played alongside Jack Johnson, Train and The Zac Brown Band.

The Paperboys have been called the Los Lobos of Canada. Forming in 1992, the sextet has performed at an estimated 4,300 shows. Scottish Fish is a Boston-based Celtic quintet with high energy. Gadan is a strings-only mashup of traditional Irish music and bluegrass.

They started when three Italian folk musicians joined forces with Enda Scahill, a tenor banjo legend and added Eric Long, a songwriter/clawhammer banjo player from Pennsylvania.

“Our lineup always features a diverse group of artists celebrating music that can be defined as folk — of the people, for the people — but it never fits into one box or one genre.

In a single year we’ll have everything from rockabilly blues and protest anthems to country-folk and Neosoul to Irish trad and West African rock music,” Pihl says.

he whooshing racers. The unmistakable tung-tung-tung of shifting drivetrains, reverberating through state-of-the art, carbon fiber road bikes. The electric jitters, the contagious joy of a racer’s win.

In what’s become a summer tradition going back decades, the Cascade Cycling Classic Criterium, presented by the Horner Cycling Foundation, returns to downtown Bend on June 21.

The criterium traces the same clockwise course it has for years: an L-shape along NW Wall Street, Oregon Avenue, Bond Street, Minnesota Avenue, Lava Road and Franklin Avenue. At nearly a mile per lap, the course is technical yet fast — a dynamic that pits powerhouse sprinters against the peloton’s nimblest bike handlers.

Last year, about 155 racers competed, ranging in age and ability from 9-year-old kiddos to seasoned professionals. This year’s prize purse is more than $20,000, which will get divvied up any number of ways according to race category; purse amounts are equal across gender according to category. There is also a non-binary 4/5 category.

“We have such a nice big prize purse,” says Cogswell-Kelley. Podium finishers of the Pro ½ racers earn $3,000, $1,800 and $1,000, respectively. Each Pro ½ purse totals $8,550.

The race will function much as it did last year. The only tweak, Cogswell-Kelley says, is that the neutral support pit, made possible by Sagebrush Cycles, Shimano and Modus Sports, is closer to the start-finish line on NW Wall Street — not tucked along NW Franklin Avenue. Veteran race announcer and cycling historian Dave Campbell will resume his master of ceremony duties.

New this year is the Battle of the Bikes that, while contentious by name, is an all-bikes-welcome, 20-minute race that lets race-curious cyclists speed along the closed-course (no e-bikes allowed). Runners can also compete in the Bend Classic Mile Run along the CCC Criterium course.

The CCC Criterium is the largest fundraiser for the Horner Cycling Foundation, which offers free cycling development training to Central Oregon kids.

“The Cascade Cycling Classic Criterium gives local kids the opportunity to race on the big stage,” Cogswell-Kelley said, adding that with 43 members, the foundation is the largest junior road racing team in Oregon.

Here’s how criteriums work: Racers on road bikes lap a closed course as many times as they can in a time determined by their category, ranging from 20 minutes (the Kiddie Bike Sprint) to 80 minutes (the Open 1/2 race).

Attacks and counter attacks go back and forth — most fail when the peloton reigns them in. Founded as the five-day stage race in 1980, the Cascade Cycling Classic came back as such after a several-year hiatus in 2019. The CCC has been a single-day event since 2024.

summer program explores the Newberry Volcano, 20 miles south of Bend, the largest volcano by area in the Cascade Range. The two-day event June 25-26 includes contemporary dance inspired by the caldera, an evening of Northern Paiute stories, a geological exhibition and a guided tour of the volcano.

Oregon Origins Project is presenting “Echoes of Eruption.” The arts and culture nonprofit explores the origins of the state through creative expression. This is the first program the group has done in Central Oregon.

On Thursday, June 25, Wilson Wewa, the Northern Paiute tribe’s spiritual leader and an enrolled member of the Confederated Tribes of Warm Springs, will share oral histories, accounts of war and events related to the tribe’s presence on the land. On June 26, a dance, choreographed by Samuel Hobbs, will be performed by his company, push/ FOLD. The work is meant to take the audience into the molten heart of Newberry, layering and folding bodies in a sculptural representation of churning magma with a musical soundscape described as evocative of the Big Obsidian Flow. Both programs, held at the Tower Theatre, will have a Q&A after the event. On

June 27, Discover Your Northwest will offer a guided tour of Newberry for ticket holders of the previous two night’s events. In conjunction, a current exhibit at Scalehouse Collaborative for the Arts Annex Gallery explores geology and transformation through time. “Visual Echoes” will be open through June 26.

Newberry Volcano has an area of 1,200 square miles, including lava flows. From north to south, the volcano is 75-miles long by 27-miles wide. It was named after geologist John Strong Newberry, who surveyed the area for the Pacific Railroad in 1855. Paulina and East Lakes are within the caldera which is four by five miles in diameter. The rock age is about 500,000 years old.

Oregon Origins Project, headquartered in Portland, was founded in 2022 and provides a platform for Indigenous artists and culture bearers to share living traditions and artistic work. The “Echoes of Eruption” is its eighth project.

t’s set to be the ultimate neighborhood block party: Bend’s up and coming Central District is throwing a blowout celebrating the arts on Saturday, June 27. The area has some gems with Somewhere That’s Green, Open Space Event Studios, Funky Fauna Artisan Ales and Dogwood at the Pine Shed bar and food cart lot.

The event will invite visitors to all those spots while NE Second Street will be filled with vendors, entertainers, food and drinks.

Open Space Event Studio on NE Layfayette Avenue is partnering with Family Kitchen for an art gallery pop-up called “Nourish,” with all proceeds supporting Family Kitchen. There will also be Oregon wine vendors. “People can walk around.

It’s kind of like a wine garden inside an art pop-up,” Open Space Director Leah Rutz told the Source. “Then in our garage space…we’re opening that up and doing garage theater. We have about four or five independent theater production companies doing small vignettes.”

The festival’s main stage will be located nearby with local musicians, including students from Cascade School of Music, as well as comedians, theater actors and other performers. Visitors can browse booths along Second Street, participate in hands-on art, watch performers from Lava City Cirque and High Desert Fire, sew something with Fashion for Everyone, a mobile sewing classroom, play games, visit with artisans, enjoy a kids zone, food and drinks.

Over at NE Second and Greenwood Avenue, John Kish, the founder of Somewhere That’s Green, will also showcase artists. “I was thinking of putting an emphasis on the 75+ local ceramicists that we have,

so emphasizing that kind of art form. And as far as the Greenhouse Cabaret goes, trying to keep educating people about what we’re doing…

Probably doing musical theater.”

In addition to showcasing a variety of local talent, Rutz says the goal is to draw folks to the Bend Central District, which she describes as a community of collaboration. The area is an urban renewal district east of the Bend Parkway, south of NE Revere Avenue, west of NE Fourth Street and north of Burnside Avenue.

“Look where we’ve grown as a town that was kind of void of art not too long ago,” Kish says. “I think of the BCD as kind of being the guiding force for that because it’s one of the only affordable areas left for artists who rent spaces and studios in industrial spots. I think it’s a really cool beginning to the long dream I think all of us have had for this district becoming an arts district.”

A new pedestrian/bicycle bridge, Hawthorne Crossing, is in the works which will span from Second Street over the Bend Parkway to NW Hill Street, making the area more accessible and walkable. Construction is estimated to begin in fall 2027.

Organizers hope to make the BCD Block Party an annual event. “To highlight the diverse cultural piece that is the Central District. We are a very different part of town,” Kish says. “We’re going to highlight our unique history but also the future possibility.”

They chose "The Producers" for its intensely comedic script and political relevance, stressing how much we need to laugh in today's world.

“There are people today who are Hitler-like in politics. And people hopefully can see some of the ridiculousness that’s going on …. We need to pay attention,” Thrower explained.

Having a show outdoors puts them at the mercy of the elements.

Mejaski said, “Is it too hot? Is it too smoky? Is there a fire nearby? Is it freezing cold and like last year, will it rain? And all of that’s beyond our control when the show must go on.”

The shared amphitheater is heavily booked throughout the summer so Theater in the Park is limited by Bend Park and Recreation District to two days with two shows, which really impacts dress rehearsals.

Mejaski says the cast, crew and live musicians practice throughout the summer but “hell week,” as Mejaski called it, typical for productions, is compressed into one day. All of the technical work, dress rehearsal, light, sound and costume checks are completed the day before opening night.

or more than a decade theater has been performed in Bend’s Drake Park. In August, Theater in the Park will put on the Tony Award-winning show, “The Producers,” a Mel Brooks Broadway musical comedy.

The show follows two characters: a theater producer and an accountant doubling as an aspiring producer.

The pair realize that it’s more profitable to create a show that completely fails rather than one that prospers, so they conspire to create the worst show possible. The culmination of their creative labor is “Springtime for Hitler,” imagining him as a good person. The play is taken for parody and is a commercial success.

The Source spoke with the co-directors, Desi Thrower and Michelle Mejaski, who each have decades of experience. Mejaski said that choreography — her specialty — is like directing with music.

Thrower discovered Theater in the Park shortly after moving to Bend from San Jose in 2021. She reached out and ended up meeting Mejaski. As co-directors, Thrower and Mejaski share overlapping responsibilities; costuming, set design and prop work, but Thrower is ultimately in charge. Mejaski jokingly called her the “top dog,” but still acts as her right-hand, giving suggestions as needed. Thrower affectionately said Mejaski can turn anyone into a dancer. The two work together well. “(If) she has a better idea than me, I’m like, ‘Desi, bam. Awesome.

Change it to that, yes.’ And if I have an idea, she’s like, ‘Yeah, brilliant, I didn’t think of that’... We’re partners

Genre bending rock band on PNW Tour

hat happens when you give some kids from Northwest Indiana instruments and degrees in jazz?

You get stop.drop.rewind, the self-proclaimed prog-punk power trio that is setting out on a Pacific Northwest tour with a stop at Bend’s Silver Moon Brewing. We had a chance to touch base with the trio from the road to hear more about what shaped their sound. the Source: How did you all meet?

Kris Lohn: DJ Crenson and I met in sixth grade when they were either too ugly or too weird (you can decide) for other kids to want to hang out with them. Eventually DJ, who owned a drum set, met someone with a guitar and started a band; Kris was quickly recruited to play bass (once he figured out what a bass was). They jumped into the music world headlong — they have now been writing and playing music together continuously since 2000, in almost any formal and informal situation you can think of: punk bands, orchestras, church band, ska club, singer/ songwriter groups, school band, and of course, their prog-punk band stop.drop.rewind. SDR started in 2008, and after a variety of lineup changes, Andy Sutton joined on drums and finalized the lineup in 2015. tS: What inspired you to start playing together?

KL: No one else in middle school would hang out with DJ and I. tS: What has changed the most over the last 10 years?

KL: Since 2016, we’ve released three albums, three EPs - including our first ever live EP this May - and a bunch of singles. One of the benefits of having the same lineup for a decade is we can see changes on the writing and process side: we aren’t constantly integrating new members or “changing direction” as people come and go. This has allowed us to attack our sound

from every possible angle, try new things in the studio, really explore what it means to be our band specifically. Of course, we’ve played almost 1,000 shows in that time, too, so hopefully we are a little bit better than we were then! tS: Your songs are full of complex layers, what does the song writing process look like?

KL: We try to be open to any ideas and inspiration for songs. For example, Kris will write on bass, guitar, keys or just walking around outside brainstorming and humming to himself; none of these ideas will end up sounding like the initial demo. But there is always a clear path back to the beginning. In general, we try to present an idea when it has a complementary section or idea (most often Kris & DJ generate an initial idea, but Andy can be a sleeper Idea Man).

So, it’s not just “here’s a riff.” Each idea is presented with a direction — a place or suggestion for the energy to go - and a similar or contrasting color/angle/vibe.

We find this is the best way to write on “what the song wants/is asking for” and keeps us from cramming as many ideas as we can in to one song (this would be ego-based writing I guess). tS: What is the music scene like in Indiana?

KL: We have a ton of friends who we love to play shows with or run into at jam nights in NW Indiana!

Unfortunately, with our road schedule, we only end up playing “at home” once or twice a year. tS: What is one of your most memorable stories from the road?

KL: We got flashed by a grandma at a biker bar in Tulsa, Oklahoma. U.S. Border Patrol individually searched our snacks (picked through grapes, bags of pretzels, etc.) looking for god knows what. Spoiler alert: they found grapes and pretzels. A bar owner in central Illinois paid us $70 to stop playing and leave because people were threatening the bouncer about us. In retrospect, the promoter should not have put us in a bar that only has rappers. We did our first tour in a minivan with a roof rack and could only afford the soft vinyl one. We packed everything in the top super tight and in plastic bags to guard against water; we never once had a leak, but the interior of the van did get filled with newly hatched mayflies in St Louis. tS: You are playing Silver Moon Brewing in Bend May 29, is this your first time in Bend? What would you like folks to know about stop.drop.rewind ahead of time?

KL: This is our first time in Bend and we are stoked! Come out for an extremely fun time, to hear some top-quality musicianship (see “we’ve been playing together since 2000”), and to find out what happens when emo kids grow up and get jazz degrees.

Three Finger Jack is a ranch-inspired tavern for those who crave comfort food, no-nonsense drinks and a side of attitude.

T

hree Finger Jack Tavern leans fully into its ranch town identity with a grin, a stiff drink and a plate of food that seems designed to make you loosen your belt one notch before dessert even arrives. Their tagline says it all. “Steak. Seafood. Firewater. Friends.” No tiny portions. No tweezer food. No apologies.

Founded in 2025 by brothers Jason and Mitch Eisenbeis, Three Finger Jack calls itself a “Tavern with Grit,” and honestly, that tracks. The brothers grew up with deep family roots in Sisters. Their parents met at Indian Ford Ranch back in the 1960s. The tavern’s name nods both to the nearby mountain and to the old frontier legend of a mysterious three-fingered trapper who reportedly lost a few digits defending his wife from a charging bear. Whether every detail of that story is true hardly matters. It fits the vibe perfectly.

The space itself feels lived in already, which is harder to pull off than it sounds. Walk through the front door and you’ll find a small bar area with a few tall tables before the room opens into booths and dining tables off to the left. Old westerns flicker across the televisions. The décor lands somewhere between ranch bunkhouse and neighborhood watering hole, but with enough humor that it never slips into cosplay territory. It feels warm. Welcoming. A little rowdy in spirit without actually being loud.

And then there’s the food. The appetizer menu wastes no time establishing its personality. You can start reasonably with sirloin Saddle Bites or Brandin’ Iron Shrimp. Or you can fully commit to the bit and order the Gator Spurs, which are chunks of alligator, breaded and fried, served with dipping sauce and a side of “sure, why not?”

But the reason my dining partner and I ended up here in the first place was meatloaf. Now, I am not generally a person who orders meatloaf at restaurants. Meatloaf belongs to moms and weeknights and childhood kitchens. Mine especially belongs to my mother, who topped hers with ketchup and never once tried to elevate it.

But Three Finger Jack’s Mountaintop Meatloaf might be the best meatloaf I’ve had since hers.

Wrapped in bacon and glazed with a whiskey kissed ketchup brown sugar sauce, it somehow managed to taste both nostalgic and indulgent at the same time.

Rich without being heavy. Smoky. Sweet. Comforting in the way all truly great tavern food should be.

Meanwhile, I spent an embarrassing amount of time debating between the wild-caught salmon and the bone-in pork chop before finally landing on the pork.

Good choice.

The chop comes from Sisters Meat and Smokehouse and arrives with a generous spoonful of Grandma Harriet’s applesauce, which sounds simple until you actually taste it. The applesauce had this subtle extra note underneath the cinnamon and fruit. Warm and almost floral.

I became mildly obsessed with figuring it out and finally asked our server, who guessed there might be almond in the secret family recipe. Or maybe not. Apparently Grandma Harriet isn’t telling.

Whatever was in it, the pairing absolutely worked.

The pork chop itself was beautifully cooked with that perfect balance of char and tenderness, and the applesauce cut through the richness in a way that made each bite better than the last.

Entrees come with your choice of mashed or baked potato, plus grilled green beans. You can also substitute a small salad or cup of soup if you’re feeling responsible. We went full comfort food with mashed potatoes and green beans across the board.

The green beans were surprisingly excellent. Perfectly al dente with enough snap that you could practically eat them like fries. The mashed potatoes were solid too.

Creamy and buttery without crossing into gluey territory. If I had one tiny note, I would not have minded a little pan sauce or light gravy to spoon over the top.

Nothing heavy. Just enough to push them from very good into unforgettable.

Before our entrees arrived, we ordered the Louie L’Amour salad with sautéed shrimp. Crisp lettuce, classic Louie fixings, tender shrimp, and a Southern style remoulade with just enough heat to keep things interesting. I’ve also heard the tavern’s soups and bisques are worth exploring, though I was too distracted by pork chop destiny to investigate further this visit.

The menu also includes sandwiches and burgers that seem tailor made for post-hike appetites. There’s the smokehouse burger on a Sisters Bakery brioche bun, Tequila shrimp tacos packed with charred shrimp,

lime, garlic and tequila, plus a smoked turkey sandwich called The Taj Mahal that pays tribute to the beloved Seasons Cafe, formerly housed in the same building. There’s also a shrimp po’ boy and an aggressively tempting grilled cheese you can upgrade with blue crab. Families are covered, too, with a straightforward kids menu featuring chicken tenders, sliders, grilled cheese and hot dogs.

Then came dessert. The menu offered Cheesecake & Strawberries, a Glacier Brownie à la mode and something called Granny Rhonda’s Got a Gun. There was never really a choice. Granny Rhonda’s dessert turned out to be a bubbling apple crisp spiked with Bulleit bourbon and topped with vanilla ice cream. The apples were soft and deeply cinnamony beneath a buttery crumble topping that somehow stayed crisp even under melting ice cream. It was absolutely enough for two people. Possibly three. We finished all of it anyway.

Cocktails here follow the motto, “Wild Pours for Wild Souls,” which mostly translates into strong classics and playful western leaning twists. I loved the Crooked River cocktail, made with Cazadores Blanco, lime and salt served Cadillac style. There are local beers, wines and a few nonalcoholic drinks, too, including a strawberry Prairie Lemonade and a root beer-based Sarsaparilla Fizz.

By the end of the evening, what stood out most about Three Finger Jack Tavern was not just the quality of the food, though the food was genuinely excellent. It was the feeling of the place. Nothing felt fussy.

Nothing felt manufactured. The service was top notch and genuinely warm. The atmosphere invited you to settle in and stay awhile.

In a town built on both tourism and tradition, Three Finger Jack Tavern manages to feel like it belongs to Sisters already. And judging by the packed tables and happy diners around us, Sisters seems pretty happy to claim it.

A longtime Bend food truck is closing at the end of the year. In a post on Facebook, the owner of Big Ski’s Pierogis announced that after 12 years, it’s time to go onto his next adventure. Big Ski’s, which is located at The Podski on NW Arizona Avenue, serves polish pierogis filled with a variety of flavors including serrano-habanero, bacon-onion, chicken-pesto, pepperoni and more. Rich Winiarski grew up in Connecticut, honoring polish traditions like the Christmas eve supper called the Wigilia, which featured pierogis. When he moved to Bend and shared the meal with friends, he decided to infuse the local cuisine with his comfort food. Wigilia plans to keep Big Ski’s open through the end of the year.

new artist co-working space called Centrally Oregon is opening in Sunriver. “I want to have artists and professionals feel like they have a community, a place to get work done with everything they need close at hand.

It will be a place that you will want to spend time,” explains founder Stephanie Gregory. She’s worked remotely for the past four years and understands the desire of having a place to go outside of the home and be part of community.

“There isn’t anything like that in southern Deschutes County,” she says.

Centrally Oregon, which is in Sunriver plaza near the Century Commons Taps & Trucks, will be a membership-based organization with a monthly fee. The space will be open weekdays during business hours, but Gregory says members will have key cards so they can access the space after hours.

In the evenings and on weekends, she plans to host events, like open mic nights, classes or lectures, which will be open to the public.

“We will also facilitate a space for artists to display and sell their work, be it books, paintings, whatever!” Gregory earned a Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing from OSU-Cascades.

“During my time at OSU-Cascades, there was such a focus on building a

community of artists, workshopping, inspiring each other, being in a supportive environment. I hosted a spoken word open mic where writers of all kinds came to share their work. It was such an amazing space, I wanted to continue that work,” she says. “I was looking for a place that would be dedicated to artists of all genres and when I found there was no space that fit what I was looking for, I decided to create one!”

She’s currently putting the finishing touches on the space. “One thing that is important to me personally is sustainability, and I am bringing that spirit to Centrally Oregon by furnishing the space with really wonderful secondhand pieces.” She’s accepting donations of books, magazines and art supplies.

Gregory is planning a grand opening celebration on June 13 with live music, snacks and beverages that will be open to the public, giving folks a chance to stop by and see what the space is all about.

Up and Scare Me SCREEN Shut "Obsession" and the modern golden age of horror

don’t think this is a very controversial statement, but we are absolutely living in the golden age of horror movies. We exist in a time where a grimy, bluesy vampire movie like “Sinners” can become the most Oscar-nominated film in history and a bonkers, singular vision like “Weapons” can nab Amy Madigan her first Best Supporting Actress at 75 years old. With the recent release of Curry Barker’s horror masterpiece, “Obsession,” fans are experiencing a genre renaissance unlike anything we’ve seen since the dawn of modern horror in the early ‘80s.

Contemporary filmmakers are treating horror for what it really is: a limitless playground for developing ideas built around what scares us about being alive.

From “Hereditary’s” disturbing deconstruction of the limitations of grief to the trans metaphor of “I Saw the TV Glow” to the treatment of demonic possession as a drug addiction in “Talk to Me,” there isn’t a single concept that can’t be explored through a scary lens.

First, I would love to put a moratorium on the term “elevated horror.” While all horror movies are most certainly not created equal, acting like “The Witch” elevates the genre because it treats its subject more “seriously” than something like “The Toxic Avenger” completely misses the point. It’s a label invented by people who are secretly ashamed of loving genre films—acting as a security blanket for cinephiles who need to pretend a movie is a grief metaphor just to justify enjoying a good scare. Horror didn’t suddenly become respectable because A24 applied a muted color palette to it.

Still, when a film like “Obsession” comes along, it’s easy to see why people reach for that vocabulary.

It takes a trope-heavy subgenre—the supernatural wish gone wrong—and updates it into a devastatingly sharp relationship allegory. Yet, even with all of its intellectual bona fides, the film remains a rollercoaster of disturbing moments, belly laughs and pulse-pounding intensity. It goes a long way toward proving horror doesn’t need to be glacially paced and dour to be important.

by Michael Johnston), a music shop employee hopelessly stuck in the friend zone with his co-worker and best friend, Nikki (a truly, profoundly astonishing Inde Navarrette).

Desperate to change their dynamic, Bear buys a cheap novelty trinket called a “One Wish Willow” from a local hippie shop. In a moment of frustration, he snaps it and wishes that Nikki would love him more than anyone else in the world.

He gets exactly what he asked for and it’s far more disturbing than the basic “Monkey’s Paw” setup suggests. Nikki immediately becomes obsessed with Bear, turning unhinged and unable to be apart from him for even just a few moments. Working as a pointed critique of toxic co-dependency and the hidden lie of the “nice guy” trope, “Obsession” has a ton to say about modern relationships and hook-up culture. It left such a layer of grime on me that when the film ended, I felt genuinely uncomfortable for an hour after the credits rolled.

What positions “Obsession” at the absolute peak of contemporary genre filmmaking is its shifting perspective on who the real monster is. Barker’s script is far too smart to leave it at a simple “crazy girlfriend” cliche. As Nikki’s behavior spirals into terrifying physical and psychological territory, the camera turns its gaze back onto Bear himself. We watch a man trapped in a prison he constructed, yet he remains deeply complicit. Even as Nikki’s mind and body visibly curdle under the weight of the spell, Bear’s entitlement and need for validation keep him from breaking it. That quiet complicity becomes just as chilling as Nikki’s manic “love.”

The film works beautifully thematically, but it functions even better as a jaw-dropping, wildly unpredictable body horror. Inde Navarrette delivers a powerhouse performance that deserves same

I’m not exaggerating when I say this is one of the most transcendent horror movie performances in history and Navarrette deserves to be on the Mount Rushmore of Horror Heroines alongside Collette, Isabelle Adjani in “Possession” and Florence Pugh in “Midsommar.” She shifts effortlessly from a facsimile of the perfect millennial girlfriend to a twitching, bone-grinding entity, hungrily watching Bear sleep from the shadows. This is an instantly, unequivocally iconic performance and I will not be taking questions at this time.

Barker, who also edited the film, proves he has an immaculate eye for slow-burn dread. He relies heavily on practical effects and deeply unsettling lighting to make Nikki look entirely inhuman without detaching her from reality. Aside from a few slightly weird story beats, Curry Barker, at 26, has made a near-perfect film and inspired me to finish writing the horror script gathering cobwebs in my head. I have a feeling there is no upper limit to what Barker can do.

Bent Alley Cat Races Are Back

The Bent Alley Cat Race Series, now back in its second season, attracts a mish-mash of cyclists each Thursday through October, beginning May 21.

T

he fledging “competitive bicycle group ride” that mewled to life last summer returns bright-eyed, bushy-tailed and ready for meow-r.

Now entering its second season, The Bent Alley Cat Races — yup, “bent” as in “outta shape,” for example — will resume its fun and slightly chaotic checkpoint-structured competition on May 21.

The Bent Alley Cat series is an ode to the bicycle messenger races popularized in urban places like San Francisco, New York City and beyond.

Competitors receive a manifest shortly before the race-start that lists required checkpoints, and racers must route themselves in the most efficient way possible. Often, winners aren’t necessarily the strongest but the savviest navigators. An alley cat simulates a typical day of messenger work.

Event organizer Shean Taylor, a former bicycle messenger and fixedgear bicycle afficionado, began the Bent Alley Cat Races last August to “create a third place” for alternative cyclists — those who don’t wear spandex nor necessarily follow professional cycling, like himself. Bikes of all varieties — velodrome-ready fixed-gears, road bikes and mountain bikes — are welcome. Helmets and front and back lights, however, are non-negotiables — you must bring those.

Folks who heard about the race through friends or read about it in the Source showed up each week last season, like kittens to a dinner chime.

Running weekly each Thursday evening, The Bent Alley Cat events grew from about a half dozen riders in its first week, culminating in about 30 folks who took part in a late-season, toy-drive-centered race that benefited

the KIDS Center, raising about $700 in gifts, Taylor said.

“If 50 people show up for any alley cat this season, then I’m going to tattoo a black cat on my body,” Taylor said with a chuckle. “I don’t trust myself enough to tattoo anybody else.”

This season, Taylor intends to add more structure and some new requirements; that teams can only compete in pairs, for example. Once a month, competitors will have an optional buyin to vie for a fattened prize purse.

Local sponsors also contribute prizes for first-place finishers, such as Second Wind Sports Bend, which kicked down a tandem bicycle.

Last year, checkpoints were often landmarks, such as public art or city park signage; riders would snap selfies to prove they’d been there. This year, Taylor says the races’ popularity has inspired volunteers to work these checkpoints, signing race manifests and cheering riders on their way.

Taylor, 39, said he’s still hammering out the details on some themed races, yet he hints at a river-themed one during the hottest parts of summer.

“We’re going to have checkpoints in the river,” he said with a chuckle.

“You’re going to have to get in the water to pass through the checkpoint.”

R

emember when you’d sit around with friends pondering questions about life or contemplating some scientific curiosity? How long has it been since an abstract question was just kicked around, stimulating boisterous conversation and spirited debate amongst family or friends? It has become all too easy to reach for the phone and throw the inquiry into some AI search platform. In fact, we are no longer just leaning into this technology to answer questions, but also to write emails, papers, even books.

Exploring abstract concepts and synthesizing oceans of esoteric thought is now possible with these systems. As an admitted slow adopter of new technology, even I am using AI tools to help solve clinical puzzles and expedite progress notes for medical records. The real time benefits are obvious, but there is a shadowy underbelly that raises real questions about bigger impacts on the human experience, and the potential for harm on our overall vitality and well-being.

So concerning has the unfolding of AI in our society become, that big names like Elon Musk, Prince Harry and Apple’s co-founder Steve Wozniak among thousands of other thought leaders have signed an open-letter calling for a pause on AI development. They worry that without deeper understanding of societal implications and without more robust regulation, these systems could get out of control, causing more harm than good.

Issues influenced on social and economic systems by AI are too vast for this discussion, but the more interpersonal and downstream mental and emotional implications are really interesting.

As mentioned, the experience of contemplation and reflection with others is sadly less common than it once was.

If the most valuable part of our experience is simply information and details, one might argue — who really cares? If we can generate pages of facts and figures in seconds, why bother with the interpersonal exploration? It could be argued that the depth of human experience is so much more than the answer to a problem or a question. One could argue that the very process of engaging with others is as enriching, if not more so, than simply arriving at an answer.

Engaging with others in the way we have for thousands of years taps us into

aspects of ourselves that go far beyond the much-revered search for knowledge.

We are hard-wired to be social and emotional creatures, and perhaps in our endless quest for greater efficiency and instant access to data, we’ve begun to undervalue just how important these aspects are. Even before the dawn of AI, we have come to understand that the isolation caused by “screen-time” and the toxic environments inherent in social media, have created an all-time high in depression and anxiety.

Social media and now AI tools have made it that much easier to continue to look “out there” for answers, searching in seconds amongst the trillions of available data points. Arguably this dynamic has only further obscured our ability (or motivation) to look “in here” to deepen our self-awareness, and cultivate our own emotional intelligence, and to explore and contemplate life’s complexities with others close to us.

Herein lies the medicine, in this humble author’s opinion. While one cannot argue the value and excitement that exists in our growing ability to be so efficient with information, it does not seem to be creating a society that is happier, more self-contented or in good relations with another. Perhaps the remedy for such high levels of anxiety, depression and loneliness is to just slow down a bit. Perhaps we have overvalued mankind’s endless pursuit of knowledge and efficiency at the expense of connection with ourselves and one another.

So here I issue a challenge to myself and to you, dear reader. Catch yourself when the overwhelm and anxiety begins to rise. Remember the medicine in nature, and grounding that occurs when time is spent quietly there, reveling in its mystery and beauty. Make time to be there with yourself and listen. Look within and be curious. Resist the temptation to reach for the phone when a puzzling question comes up.

Take the time to be unsure and revel in the uncertainty. Allow new ideas to arise on their own. Be human with one another. This may just be the intelligence we are actually seeking.

ummer is the perfect time to make your home feel lighter, brighter and more relaxed without spending a lot of money. The best seasonal updates are simple ones: they clear visual clutter, bring in fresh color and make everyday spaces feel easier to enjoy. Current decorating trends point toward mismatched vintage finds, layered natural textures, soft blues, energetic green-yellow accents, gallery walls and playful patterns. Fortunately, each of these ideas can be used in affordable, practical ways.

First, start with a quick declutter.

Put away extra blankets, dark accessories and anything that makes a room feel crowded. Open surfaces instantly make a home feel cooler and calmer. Next, wash windows, mirrors, and glass doors.

More natural light is one of the easiest ways to make a room look refreshed.

Third, switch out heavy fabrics.
