Long, long ago, before my time as editor of this fine publication, some smart minds saw the writing on the wall and knew that Bend was fast becoming a microbrew darling. Boom, our beer column was born. Where we once called the column “Micro,” the proliferation of the term “craft” to signify everything small- and medium-sized in the beer world (along with the explosion of non-beer craft-made beverages) sparked a change to the title “Craft” a few years back. That column is now where we house any manner of drinky goodness—with OG beer coverage populating the space most weeks, and wine and cider and craft cocktails also getting plenty of ink. But in homage to Bend’s roots as a beer town, we also have to roll out a Beer Issue from time to time—including right now, when I for one find an increasing number of reasons to dive into a bath of suds at the end of a long, pandemic-ridden day.

Check out all the news and opinion we have on offer for the week, and then roll right into some coverage of what remains Bend’s favorite beverage. Or, at least, the beverage we still like to talk about most.

Water Use: It’s Time to Think Differently About How Central Oregon Grows and Develops

ne doesn’t need to look far to see the effects the extreme drought is having on our region. With irrigation water scarce, farmers around Madras have this year let their fields go unplanted. The Three Sisters are looking pitifully bald as the glaciers retreat. Fish and wildlife officials across the West— from Idaho to Montana to Oregon—are limiting fishing harvests as they watch rivers warm up due to drought. These issues are affecting livelihoods.

That stands in stark contrast to the efforts of several groups in Bend and Redmond right now, who still believe that pushing for projects that use excess water in the name of more tourism and recreation is a fight worth having. You’ll see it in the efforts of a few unhappy homeowners who are crying “save our golf course!” over at River’s Edge, where the owners of the land announced this year that they’d forego the links and build more much-needed homes instead.

And right now, the Deschutes County Board of Commissioners is wading through a host of public comments regarding the more than decade-long effort to build a new resort community, Thornburgh Resort, which is planned to include several ponds and multiple golf courses. After county commissioners approved the project in 2018, conservation groups appealed, and the Oregon State Land Use Board of Appeals told the County to give the case a second look. The millions of gallons of water that the resort will draw from the aquifer below it will negatively affect the Deschutes River and Whychus Creek, according to Central Oregon LandWatch. The other issue: the resort also needs to prove it has enough “mitigation water” to counter the effects it will

have on fish and wildlife. The resort’s organizers have not been transparent about where that mitigation water is coming from, LandWatch argues, and thus we can’t know whether fish and wildlife are actually going to be protected, and if the water is still available, given the current shortage.

In a time when water issues are becoming ever more critical and we’re seeing continued fish populations threatened, it’s important to consider what the public good is as these projects try to gain approval. With water resources evaporating, individuals or small-group wants cannot be prioritized over the collective good. We are living in a time when each of us is confronted with the choice to prioritize the collective good over our individual “liberty,” and in that, all too many are failing to see the bigger picture. The current pandemic will one day subside—but the issues that will come from raising the temperatures of our rivers and draining our aquifers in the name of tourism will impact our lives for much longer.

The water concerns around the resort near Redmond were an issue when they were raised over a decade ago, and those issues have only grown more acute. The public had the ability to comment on the issue through this week, and right now, Deschutes County commissioners are deciding the resort’s fate. In the interest of those generations in the future who may still want to farm or raise a family here, we hope the commissioners will put the region’s basic needs first. This is not the last time that water use will come up before the people of this region, and it’s up to each of us to preserve and protect our existing resources.

I am writing to you as a mother and an aunt of children within the BendLa Pine school district. I voted for and I support this school board and their goals, and here are two reasons why.

1. The Pandemic. I work in Emergency Medicine. I am not a doctor, but I have the privilege of working with the top physicians and researchers in our country. Some of these doctors are currently working in the hot zones in Florida and Texas. There is not one difference of opinion from these experts on how to keep our children safe. They all agree; masking, social distancing and vaccines.

In fact, all you need to do is look at what has happened to the school districts that have returned to school without these measures. Their COVID numbers have exploded causing their ICUs and ERs to be overwhelmed, and thousands of children are now back at home quarantining. Our own local ER physicians and pediatricians wrote letters expressing the importance of masking, social distancing and vaccines. The newly elected board members ran knowing they would be governing in the middle of a pandemic. They have stated publicly that they would be taking their guidance from public health officials to keep our kids safe and schools healthy. This leadership is why they were voted in, and it is why they have my support.

2.Awareness. When my son was in grade school he was harassed for the color of his skin. To be clear my child is very white, but he has his great grandpa’s olive Armenian complexion. He was harassed to the point where I caught him scrubbing his skin raw one morning before school to “look like his friends.” This bullying stemmed not from the children on the playground, but from the mouths

of their parents at home. My husband’s work hours meant that I was the only face at school, a lot of the parents assumed he was black, and that my child was “mixed.”

(Yes, someone said that to me out loud) When they finally had the opportunity to meet my husband the “that’s his biological dad?” and “where did your son get his complexion?” statements began. Once they realized we were a “white” family, their kids were allowed to play with mine again. We switched schools. The point of this experience is not to say we know what it is like to be discriminated against, because we don’t. My point is to say if my very white child can experience this type of aggression in grade school in today’s time then what are our children of color experiencing within our schools? The Deschutes Historical Society wrote about how our board has not had a person of color on it in over 100 years. It is important for our children of different ethnicities to see leaders in our community who look like them, and it is equally important for my white child to see leaders who do not look like him. Our school board is comprised of highly educated, successful people of all backgrounds who ran on inclusion. I want our children to attend schools where equity, human decency, and kindness are a rule not an exception.

To get there we need more education, and this board has a plan for that.

As American citizens, we are permitted by the 1st Amendment to fly any of those flags, but I would hope our city leaders would vote to condemn their symbolism.

RE POLL QUESTION: SHOULD LOCAL SCHOOL DISTRICTS HAVE CONTROL OF THEIR OWN MASK POLICIES? I do think the mask mandate is important for controlling the pandemic but, each person and each district has different circumstances in their demographics, location or facilities that may necessitate a more individual. We humans are so stubborn, even to the extent of taking care of our own health. A mandate without exceptions causes disgruntlement and even anger.

I hope we can all express love and care to everyone we encounter as we pass through this world.

I absolutely agree that short term rentals in new developments should be at ZERO! At this crisis point, our housing needs to go to residents, not weekenders.

Bend is a desirable place to visit, and the vacation industry cannot be allowed to dominate our local community. Visitors should be staying at one of our many large and welcoming hotels.

COVID’s Fourth Semester What’s new for Central Oregon students

OVID caught schools off guard when it first swept across the country in 2020. A lack of available testing and digital teaching tools resulted in mass quarantines, confusion among parents and students and the enactment of COVID-safe practices like wearing masks, daily surface disinfections and social distancing. Bend-La Pine Schools and Redmond School District will open next week, both adhering to Oregon Health Authority guidelines and both putting what they’ve learned the last 18 months to the test.

Masks Masks are required in all indoor settings for students in both districts unless they’re eating, drinking, playing wind instruments or when doing physical activity.

“If they’re engaged in something like PE—if they were doing wrestling and it could strangle them if they’re playing an instrument, those sorts of things are exceptions to the indoor mask rule,” said Redmond School District Public Information Officer Sheila Miller. “According to the school mask rule,

outdoors masks are still recommended but not required. So, in recess kids are not required to wear masks.”

Students also won’t be required to wear masks while actively playing an extracurricular sport, though players, coaches, officials and resting players will.

If Oregon Gov. Kate Brown’s mask mandate expires or is rescinded and vaccines are approved for children under 12, for at least 60 days indoor masking would be recommended rather than required in BLPS. If it has been fewer than 60 days, students under 12 would still be required to mask indoors and mask use is recommended for students over 12.

“Additionally, upon reinstatement of local control of decision-making, the district would continue to partner with local public health authorities to monitor both community rates of transmission and in-school or in-department transmission activity,” BLPS wrote on its website. “In cases where localized transmission rates elevate in schools, district administrators, partnering with local health,

may institute more restrictive interventions on a case-by-case basis as conditions are warranted.”

If schools fail to meet mask requirements, they may be liable for a fine.

Distancing and Quarantine Students will be placed at least 3 feet apart from others in class and at lunch.

Schools will also make an effort to do more outside when possible.

“Until it gets too cold, or if it’s smoky, we’ll try and do meals outside or sometimes, some teachers may want to teach class outside and that’ll be that that’s just kind of on a school-by-school basis,” Miller said.

Quarantining is less uniform than prior semesters and will be contingent on vaccination status, mask use and proximity.

“If you are fully vaccinated, and you have a close contact with a student or staff member who has tested positive for COVID-19 you do not have to quarantine. Secondly, students who are within 3 feet of another student who tests positive for COVID-19, if they’re both wearing a mask correctly, they do not have to quarantine,” Miller said.

“If they’re not masked, and they’re within 6 feet, they do have to quarantine, and if you are within 6 feet of a staff member who tests positive for COVID, even if you have a mask on, you still have to quarantine.”

Vaccines All health care and child care professionals are required to get vaccinated by Oct. 18 under a statewide executive order.

“We were developing processes, we’ve provided our staff with that information, as well as with the religious exception form and the medical exemption form that the Oregon Health Authority provided us. So, we expect that all of our staff will and most of our staff is already fully vaccinated,” Miller said.

Students will not be required to get vaccinated at either district to continue attending.

“Bend-La Pine Schools recognizes that the best approach to preventing the spread of COVID-19 is a layered defense of protective measures, with the COVID-19 vaccination being the best defense in protecting individuals from contracting COVID-19 and preventing the spread of the virus to others,” BLPS wrote.

Online Learning RSD will offer full-time online learning options, and BLPS can accommodate both full-time school schedules and hybrid models.

“We learned how valuable technology can be and it allowed us to do a lot of stuff that would have been impossible during the year when we were faced with a global pandemic,” Miller said.

Inside Bend's New High School

Bend-La Pine Schools’ Caldera High School on Bend’s south side is the first new high school to open in the district in two decades. Ninth and 10th graders will occupy the school in the first year, with one grade level added in the two subsequent years. The school includes 60 new classrooms and a 600-seat auditorium. Above, center photo, is a bilingual poem, in Spanish and English, adorning a school stairway. Among the student body will be the district’s Dual Immersion students, who learn in both English and Spanish.

Caldera student athletes are dubbed “The Wolfpack.”

Some Caldera teams will compete at only the junior varsity level this year, while others will have varsitylevel athletics in year one. The school’s football team, which will play on the field seen at left, will start at a JV level this academic year.

A New High School Naming Committee selected the name Caldera in March 2020, choosing from a host of names suggested through an online community survey. Caldera Principal Chris Boyd, who was selected for the job in 2019 after serving as principal for Pacific Crest Middle School, is placing a special focus on “purpose” and “belonging” as the school opens its doors.

Career and technical education programs at Caldera include health sciences, construction, entrepreneurship, engineering and design and the arts.

Conservative pundit Raheem Kassam, former Breitbart editor and UKIP candidate, lays out a pro-Trump future in a post-Trump world

Kassam defended Matt Gaetz, the Florida congressman accused of child sex trafficking, saying it’s an example of how the media destroys people’s lives. He shifted the blame of the Jan. 6 riot away from the crowd of Trump supporters.

Kassam, the main draw for the event, has stood on a blurred line between outright conservative politicking and punditry for over a decade.

“I hear you’re a reporter—so you’re very important, so I have to come and talk to you,” Kassam said. “I’m sorry I’ve interrupted your meal, I’m Raheem, I just wanted to make sure we were going to get some fair coverage.

I know it’s a fraught world and I know the way your organization leans but I hope if you have any questions by the end of my talk, come up to me and ask me anything.”

Media skepticism runs deep throughout his speech, and at several points he infers that he’ll be misinterpreted, and challenged reporters to look up context for his more controversial comments.

He asked to be quoted accurately about vaccine hesitancy, calling it an “experimental mRNA pseudo vaccine,” not a

“I don’t even know if it was Antifa, but a lot of people were FBI informants, that’s for sure,” Kassam responded. “For the reporters in the room, again, before you quote me, please look it up.”

This allegation is based on a widely debunked article from conservative website Revolver News that incorrectly assumes people identified as unindicted co-conspirators in charging documents were government agents. Kassam’s request for reporters to research the context of his comments more often than not helped to debunk his claims

rather than vindicate them, at least according to “mainstream” media.

The Oregon Democratic Party condemned the Deschutes GOP’s choice of speakers two days before the event in a press release, calling Kassam and Winters “China-Centric conspiracy theorists.”

“Whether it’s denigrating the heroic work of Capitol Police officers, or his attacks on women and the LGBTQ+ community, Mr. Kassam’s hateful views have no place in Oregon,” said Democratic Party of Oregon Chair Carla “KC” Hanson in a press release.

Kassam claimed his best friends in Washington, D.C., are all liberal reporters, and at times bemoaned the breakdown of communication between the political left and right.

“What does it mean to be partners in a nation together? Does it mean that we strike out at each other at every available opportunity, which is basically what we’re doing now? Or does it mean that we actually cut each other some slack sometimes and go, ‘Hey, here’s different ideas. I think it’s wrong, but he’s not a Nazi. He’s not a Russian agent,’” he told the Source.

His maximalist language doesn’t seem to adhere to that goal. During the speech he called Barack Obama a Marxist, and said that to be a peaceful Muslim you must ignore most of the Quran, and at several points assumed bad faith from reporters in the room. I believe I was the only one.

“There’s no doubt in my mind, that on the back of this, somebody will write

something that is fundamentally untrue about me or fundamentally untrue about Natalie, fundamentally untrue about every single person in this room,” Kassam said.

Having been addressed multiple times in the speech, I had a difficult time writing this in a traditional third-person point of view, so here’s my view of what was true from the event. The majority of attendees believe the election was stolen, that vaccines are nefarious and masks are useless. To that point, Bend Police responded to a call to the address of the Bend Golf Club the night of the event, and confirm that they’re investigating an allegation of harassment. The incident was reportedly over mask-wearing. The incident didn’t involve any of the club’s members, said the club’s general manager, who declined to comment further regarding the “active investigation.”

While giving a speech in a county where Republican voters represent roughly one-third of registered voters— with the other thirds represented by Democratic and non-affiliated voters, Kassam also advocated for tossing out more moderate conservative candidates.

“Look, we have to understand that there was a litmus test for people now.

That litmus test is this, do you believe the election was free and fair or not?

And if any Republican candidate wants to be talking here, and says, ‘yeah, the election was free and fair,’ toss them,” Kassam said to applause.

“I

t’s nice to see someone at these things that doesn’t have gray hair,” a man tells me as I wait in line to enter the Deschutes Republicans’ Aug. 25 fundraiser, headlined by Raheem Kassam and Natalie Winters of the right-wing news website, the National Pulse.

A quick scan of the room affirms what the man said. In the sold-out ballroom of the Bend Golf Club I can only spot one other person who looks under 30. It’s possible I’m the second youngest person in the room, after co-speaker Winters, the 20-year-old investigative reporter.

I amble around until I find a seat at the back of the room. The conversation is polite, largely centered around the audit of the Arizona election, until I’m asked what I do. When I respond that I’m a reporter for the Source Weekly, some of my table’s guards went up, but the conversation remained friendly. Still, I got a sense that people were suspicious of the “liberal media” reporter at their table. Word spread fast and before long the man of the hour came to greet me.

He edited Breitbart’s London bureau, worked for right-leaning think tanks, co-hosts Steve Bannon’s War Room Podcast with the former White House chief strategist under Donald Trump and was highly involved in the United Kingdom Independence Party, where he was a Senior Advisor to UKIP leader Nigel Farange during Brexit. Kassam also made a failed bid for leadership of the party after Farange retired.

If You're New Here: Bend Breweries Despite the Bend Ale Trail, some breweries are still below the radar

ome breweries and certain beers are completely engrained in the Bendite lifestyle. Even if you arrived in town today, you’ve assuredly enjoyed a Deschutes Fresh Squeezed IPA or a Black Butte Porter (which make up a sizeable chunk of the brewery’s roughly quarter-million-barrel annual production. Likewise, its new subsidiary, Boneyard Brewing, enjoys a reputation for RPM IPA well beyond city limits.

But we don’t get to call this place Beervana for having a mere dozen breweries.

Furthermore, local brewers excel at brewing more than just India pale ales, though it pained me to use the word “just” right there. So, for hopheads, malt lovers and those who need their beers to be beyond the ordinary, here are some of the Bend breweries with less-trodden paths leading to their doors or beer gardens.

Porter Brewing How can a brewery that’s literally at the corner of Wall and Oregon be considered underground? Because the brewery, actually based in Redmond, operates The Cellar, a truly subterranean tasting room that’s easy to miss— especially if you’re distracted by the smell of Goody’s Chocolates nearby.

Porter does brew the incredible 1772 Porter, but also a wealth of English styles that tend to get less love from the IPA factories. Every beer is cask-conditioned and served on a hand-pump in the traditional fashion of UK “real ales.” By virtue of being only naturally carbonated and served at comparatively warmer cellar temps (around 55 degrees), beers such

The Ale Apothecary Practically adjacent to GoodLife Brewing—big enough to have its own bocce courts in its massive biergarten— Ale Apothecary offers a respite from hop-forward beers by serving exclusively sour-forward beers. Another brewery that specializes in a singular direction, Ale Apothecary beers are inoculated with wild yeasts and souring microorganisms like lactobaccillus. The resulting beers, like their flagship Sahalie, named after co-owners Paul and Staci’s daughter (and/or the beautiful waterfall), are refreshingly tart and complex.

Bevel Craft Brewing Head southeast and you’ll discover another of our mighty husband-wife operations. World champion disc golfers Nate and Valerie Doss know that no round of disc golf is replete without a cold one in your free hand, so they established Bevel in 2019, making it Bend’s youngest production brewery. The taproom offers guests sunny sippers like Steady Pilsner, but mostly a wide array of hoppier beers from Funday IPA—a rare sub-5-percent

alcohol IPA—to the Citra hop bomb Iron Leaf—an over-8-percent imperial IPA. And for fans of the throwback Cascadian Dark Ale style, a sort of cross between a stout and an IPA, try Black Ace. If you’re feeling peckish, four food carts are part of the 9th Street Village.

Bridge 99 Brewery You’ll also find food trucks on site at Bridge 99, including Bad Boys BBQ (although they are currently closed due to staffing issues). Bridge 99 marks the angler’s paradise on the Metolius River near Sisters and that number is, according to legend, how many bottles of beer are on the wall. You can get cans or crowlers to go, but stick around on the popular patio—pooches welcome—and enjoy some Headwater Hefe or its blood orange-imbued counterpart. For one

of the tastiest dessert-inspired beers in town, there’s fan favorite Tiramisu Porter.

Oblivion Brewing Co. Literally around the corner from Bridge 99, Oblivion may no longer operate the pub on Galveston (now occupied by Sunriver Brewing), but the tasting room is a great spot to hang out while sipping fan fave Backside IPA. The classic West Coast IPA bursts with citrus rind and pine needle notes, while Oblivious Blonde is the portrait of an easy-drinking beer. Show up on Fridays and after you discover which of their beers is your favorite, you can fill your growler to take more home for just five bucks.

The governing body managing booze and buds in Oregon has been busy throughout the pandemic, first by allowing restaurants and bars to do takeaway drinks in a temporary, COVID-era rule, and later by changing its name from the Oregon Liquor Control Commission to the Oregon Liquor and Cannabis Commission—you know, just to be clear about exactly what this commission is controlling, exactly. During its 2021 session, in cooperation with the OLCC, the Oregon legislature passed a law that allows businesses with “full-on-premises” sales licenses to continue to sell cocktails and single servings of wine to go. Those businesses can now also sell sealed takeaway containers of malt beverages, wine and cider, as of early June—a rule that now won’t go away with the end of the pandemic. As with the temporary rule, the drinks have to come with the order of a “substantial

food item,” and there’s a limit of two drinks per food item.

Beer marketing awards are a thing Craft beer makers in and around Bend often get awards for the beer they make—and now they get awards for the marketing that goes along with those beers, too. The organizers of the Craft Beer Marketing Awards announced Aug. 18 that three Bend breweries had taken home awards that recognize the “artwork, design and retail marketing efforts behind craft beer.” The contest is the “first of its kind international global competition,” its organizers said.

10Barrel took home a platinum award for Best Merchandise Design/Sustainable or Innovative category for its t-shirt collaboration with Northwest graphic designer and mountain bike gal, Brooklyn Bell.

And Worthy Brewing won a gold award in the Wild Card/Coolest Taproom category, getting the nod for its “Hopservatory” star observatory, its DrinkUp DreamOn Outdoor stage and its greenhouse and gardens. In total, 14 awards were handed out to Oregon companies in the awards.

Awards for canned cocktails Not quite in the beer realm, but made by the brewing team at 10Barrel are the canned cocktails that just took home a host of awards at the American Distilling Institute’s Spirit Awards. 10 Barrel’s team won a Gold Medal for its Greyhound, a “certified craft blended spirit” that you may have seen floating around Central Oregon from time to time. Winning silver medals were four other 10Barrel craft

blended spirits, including its Bloody Mary, the Classic Margarita, the Lemongrass Lime Vodka Soda and the Moscow Mule. The awards were given out at ADI’s conference in Louisville, Kentucky, on Aug. 24 and 25. These canned cocktails get high marks from the Source Weekly drinking team, too.

Sampling Bend's Best Beers

I tried all of Bend’s top-voted beers. I didn’t realize that trying them all at once is not recommended.

I

n the Source Weekly’s Best Of 2021 edition, Central Oregonians ranked their favorite beers in five categories: Dark, hazy, light, IPA and seasonal. Being relatively new to the area, I decided to try all the winners and runners up I could find to get a better understanding of the local beer scene. Being relatively new to beer reporting, I decided to drink them all in one sitting, writing as I go.

As a news guy the act of reporting on a vice is foreign to me. Writing why a beer is good is, to me, like writing about why puppies are cute. I’ve never had a beer I didn’t like and to date my favorite type of beer is: free. So, without further ado, let’s drink.

Light Beers Sentimental for the Miller Lites I stole from my father as a teenager, I decide to start with the Crux Pilsner, the light beer runner-up. The German-style beer doesn’t disappoint, and reminds me of those Millers had they been thoughtfully brewed by hand and not the cold corporate fist of the Miller Brewing Company.

Next up is Good Life’s Sweet As, a pale ale with fruitier notes than the pilsner, and retaining an easy light beer drinkability. In fact, it’s so drinkable I’m drinking another.

Dark Beers Three beers in and I’m craving something a little darker, so I pop open our Dark Beer runner-up, 10 Barrel’s S1nist0r Black Ale. Being the (now tipsy) grammar guy that I am, I ignore the strange spelling and take a swig; surprisingly the dark beer doesn’t have the liquid bread characteristics of a Guinness.

It tastes a bit like chocolate and it makes you dizzy, that’s a good thing.

My fifth beer is one of Bend’s finest, Deschutes Brewery’s flagship Black Butte Porter. I try to focus on the tastes, aromas and mouthfeel, but five beers deep and I am unable to think about anything besides having a cigarette. I go smoke, temporarily destroying my palate and therefore my ability to judge how delicious it was. Having had this one before, I’ll assume it was great.

IPAs Ahh, the India Pale Ale, the most maligned of all beers. People say IPAs are just for hipsters, but that’s impossible because I like them, too. I start with Sunriver Brewing’s Vicious Mosquito IPA, our runner-up in the IPA category. Earlier I said my favorite beer is free, but I’m changing my mind. Now, my favorite beer is: Sixth.

awards speak for themselves, at least better than I can; my speech is slurred and I’m fergitting I’m supposed to be doing serious beer journalism.

Hazy Hazy’s how I’m feeling and hazy’s what I’m drinking, starting with Good Life Sippy Cup Hazy Pale. Tastes a bit like fruits and beer, and goddamn I’m wasted. 10/10. New favorite Beer: Eight!

Despite the false advertising, the beer’s good, and I’m good and really, I’m OK.

Seasonal It feels like Christmas but it aren’t, and our winners for seasonal are both Winter beers. Deschutes Brewery’s Jubelale and Red Chair eevade me for now, but I’m determined to drink my 10th and 11th beer. To archieve thus, I’m maintaining my current blood alcohol lever until it available.

Little Woody Open to Masked, Vaxed and Negative Gnomes

ver since 2009, The Little Woody has celebrated Central Oregon breweries and, more specifically, the beers aged in wooden casks that they produce. Every year except for last year, of course. But, for those who’ve been vaccinated or can show proof of a negative Coronavirus test result from the previous 48 hours—and aware that masks are mandated while not sipping or noshing—the barrels will be rolled out Friday, Sept. 3 and Saturday, Sept. 4 at the Deschutes Historical Museum. For those who attend Friday but don’t get their share of bourbon-aged stouts or wine-aged ciders or rye whiskey-aged, well, whiskeys, they may return the next day provided they have their wristband and tasting glass intact.

“Imagine eating a raw apple versus baking it in a pie with sugar and seasonings,” says event coordinator Lisa Wood.

(And yes, Wood is her real name.) “It changes the flavor, the aroma, the feel and the appearance.” But not all barrels are the same. Some of this year’s beers are aged in bourbon, while others have been matured in rye or wine casks.

“A charred barrel can add a subtle smokiness,” adds Wood. “An oak barrel can impart flavors of coconut while a bourbon barrel can add caramel undertones. Each brew, cider and spirit we’re bringing to the festival features its own distinct taste.”

Wood bills the festival as a sort-of “last hoorah for summer” (the forecast shows it’ll be hot, though happily not Heat-Dome hot) and that “Little Woody is almost like a mini Bend: the taps are always flowing and the people are always affable. It’s safe to say the stoke level is extremely high across the board (including) for our brewers.”

Speaking of stoke and mini, although all ticketholders receive a tasting glass, attendees are encouraged to come in costume, specifically as the Little Woody mascot, a pointy gnome. Goblet glasses will be awarded to the first 200 “gnomies”

replete with gnome domes (hat), overalls or dirndl with giant belt, and things like a beard for gentle-gnomes. Bring your wooden pipe if you’ve got one. Incomplete costumes get you bupkis.

This year’s lineup features more than 25 makers—19 breweries, two cideries and four distilleries—with the bulk coming from Central Oregon. Bend brewers include Boneyard, Crux, Deschutes, Immersion, Silver Moon, and the only one that already exclusively proffers barrel-aged beers, The Ale Apothecary. Some of the others from around Oregon include Astoria’s Fort George, Eugene’s Gratitude, Hood River’s pFriem, and from Portland, Hopworks. Cider lovers will find Bend Cider Co. and, from Washington, Finn River. Portland’s Westward Whiskey, the whiskey tent sponsor, will pour samples alongside Bend’s Crater Lake Spirits and from Kentucky, Buffalo Trace.

Why would you even age beer or cider in barrels in the first place?

as Deschutes’ Black Butte 33, the 12.2% alcohol-by-volume imperial porter aged in bourbon with vanilla and maple, its 6.5% ABV Amburana Bock—aged in Brazilian Amburana wood, imparting notes of cinnamon and coconut, is much harder to come across. Fans of Wild Ride’s Laughing Face imperial coconut porter from Redmond may want to wear an eye patch in addition to the now-customary mask, because this 9.5% rum-aged pirate’s treasure may shoot your eye out.

For a super fun twist, two of the single-malt whiskeys that Westward will pour went through a secondary maturation; one in stout casks (no doubt received from a brewery that used Westward’s spent barrel to age said stout in the first place), and one in Pinot Noir casks.

A local brewer works the magic on all that barrel-aged goodness.

Speaking of graphics: “Lib Tech Artist and OG Skunk Ape, Quincy Quigg was totally down to do the Keg Froth Art as he has on many iterations of Skunk Ape boards,” says Trevor Philips.

“We really felt like Quincy Quigg’s artwork fit seamlessly in with Boneyard’s graphics,” Lawrence echoed.

One of Boneyard’s hallmarks in the industry (besides RPM IPA) is utilizing eye-catching, detailed classic tattoo style art in its branding and logos—a

aw. Hop-forward. And built for powdays. That’s what compilation wintertime masterpiece Skunk Ape India Red Ale is all about. Locally crafted by hometown hero Boneyard Beer and the Pacific Northwest’s pinnacle of snowboard companies, Lib Tech, out of Washington, the frothy thriller was born in Bend in 2011.

To celebrate Skunk Ape’s 10th anniversary, this is the little-known tale of its namesake, told by the legends that concocted it all.

“This beer stands for everything Boneyard loves: hops, flavor and wicked good snowboards,” explains Boneyard Co-owner and Master Brewer Tony Lawrence. Skunk Ape was conceived when Lawrence, along with Trevor Philips and Kyle Phillips from Lib Tech teamed up to, “bring the craft beer and snowboard worlds together to create a powder-centric beer to quench any shredder’s thirst,” says Lawrence.

After becoming acquainted as brewers in the early days of Deschutes Brewery, Kyle Phillips and Lawrence remained in touch.

“Years later Kyle and I were both working at Lib Tech,” says Trevor Philips, “and were trading Skunk Ape snowboards for Boneyard Beer.” Cue the collab. “We all rode Skunk Apes and so we landed on that name [for the beer].”

Digging a little deeper, Lawrence reveals, “The strange thing is, I’m not

Frontwoman Jessica Dobson talks about craving the stage, "Impossible Weight" and reflects on her career in music

O

n her 11th birthday, Jessica Dobson’s aunt gifted her with an electric guitar. Her life from there was split into a new chapter. Now? She’s one of the most exciting guitar players to watch today—along with being an absolutely brilliant vocalist.

“It’s like there was a time before I played guitar and then a time after. And the after part… it was just with me at all times. I practiced all the time, and would make my parents mad because I wouldn’t shut up. All hours into the night. They weren’t really mad, but they were just like, ‘go to bed!’”

As Dobson continues to tell me from Seattle, while holed up in a coffee shop bathroom for privacy and a connection to an available phone charger, the Deep Sea Diver frontwoman went on to keep playing guitar in bands throughout her teenage years, even doing the “Elliott Smith thing” in coffee shops. She’d then go on to sign with Atlantic Records at the early age of 19, which is a giant step into a new world for a teenager.

“I think you know what you know at that age. And it’s not much. I went into it pretty green and hoping for the best. But being a little crushed by the machine and coming out a smarter and wiser person,” recalls Dobson.

While starting on a major label that young was a bumpy start individually, her early beginnings in music were also able to yield opportunities to tour and play with some of the biggest names in the game—like Beck and The Shins (who she performed with at the Les Schwab Amphitheater in 2012). Dobson describes these moments in her career as “humbling,” as she tried to soak in as much knowledge as she could while around such talented musicians.

Since leaving The Shins in 2013, Dobson has been 100% focused on her band Deep Sea Diver, which she started shortly after she left Atlantic, releasing its first EP in 2009 and its debut album in 2012.

The band currently consists of Dobson, her husband Peter Mansen on drums, Garrett Gue on bass and Elliot Jackson on guitar/synth. The band is now three albums in, with its latest, “Impossible Weight,” releasing this past October.

in her own life. Dobson reflects on learning to take her emotions more seriously while realizing that leaning on others at times isn’t necessarily a burden, and that the act of letting others in can be a positive experience for your mental health.

“I think for most people, including myself, when experiencing a hardship you don’t want to burden other people with that hardship because you know everyone is going through their own stuff. It’s easy to get into a mindset of burying things down or trying to carry things on your own. When in reality, it is so much more healthy to be vulnerable with other people and to let people in,” says Dobson. “Not everyone’s going to get it and you can really tell who your true friends are when you extend that vulnerability. I’ve learned now that people are a lot more kind and giving of their time than I could imagine.”

Due to the pandemic, Deep Sea Diver was never able to properly tour the release of “Impossible Weight,” but this fall they’ll finally be back on the road doing what they love, and will be stopping in Bend with Death Cab For Cutie on Sept. 6.

“I’ve been listening to Death Cab since I was a teenager and it’s always an honor to tour with people you love. I’ve become friends with people in the band over the years just being in the same music community in the Northwest. Obviously things are interesting right now as we’re all getting ready to go on tour with safety protocols, and we just want to get out there and play some sick shows. It’s gonna be a lot of fun,” she says. “Performing is such a deep, intrinsic part of my personality and making, creating, and playing music with others is so giving. Not doing that for a year and a half, it’s going to be incredible.”

We're back for 2021 and at the Deschutes Historical Museum, in beautiful downtown Bend.

The Little Woody Barrel-Aged Beer, Cider & Whiskey Festival is a celebration of the incredible barrel-aged beverages from around the PNW. Come and celebrate the small batch brewing from 25 local and regional brewers.

H e a lt h & S a f e t y I n f o Due to a rapidly changing health environment, there have been updates to the health and safety protocols for this year’s event.

Attendance and participation at the 2021 Little Woody Festival will now require proof of vaccination or a negative COVID test. The test must be taken within 48 hours prior to entry into the festival.

Proof of vaccination or a negative COVID test will be required for all ticket holders, volunteers and staff. Attendees will be required to show proof of vaccination or their negative COVID test upon check-in to the event.

Additionally, we will follow all other local or statewide guidelines or mandates in place at the time of the event.

We’ve got a special goblet and 2 extra drink tokens for the first 200 gnomies that show up in the proper attire—dressed like a gnome! We want to see beards, hats, over-alls—perhaps even a wooden pipe. Your costume has to be COMPLETE, gnomies—a hat alone won’t cut it (even if it’s a really sweet hat).

The only exception to the policy is for children under the age of 12, who are not yet eligible for vaccination. Children under 12 will be required to wear a mask at all times while inside the event venue.

For this dark sour beer, we teamed up with Jasmine Pearl Tea Co. in Portland and cold steeped a barrel aged mixed culture fermentation dark lager with their Black Wolf Tea blend. Matryoshka aged for a year in Kentucky bourbon barrels, stacking layers upon layers of elegant complexity. This Russian Imperial Stout builds with a graceful and delicate intensity, strong enough for the Siberian winter. Matryoshka is the Russian name for nesting dolls. And much like those wooden dolls, the Matryoshka series releases in many variations, each one more intricate than the last.

Encompassing Bend, Redmond, La Pine, Sisters, Terrebonne and Tumalo, the historical museum is an important institution for celebrating the past and protecting the future of Central Oregon. The museum and community center is dedicated to education, research and appreciation for the unique local history of Deschutes County, and to build a living legacy that grows with each new generation.

The Allman Betts Band released "Down to the River" in June of 2019, the debut album represented not only the first time the group had recorded together, but, in fact, the first time the seven-piece ensemble had ever played together. Local venues begin checking vaccination cards, requiring tests, with varying policies

requirement involved passing through a COVID-compliance table before the now-usual bag check table—a process that added a few minutes to the check-in process, and requires more staffing and organization. For some venues, that—and the ongoing presence of the Delta variant in the community—were too much to remain operational. Volcanic Theatre Pub, the indoor venue on Bend’s west side, announced Aug. 24 that it would close for at least two weeks, and until further notice, due to the current spike in COVID cases in Deschutes County.

“For the safety of the community, our staff, and healthcare providers, we absolutely must make this decision do our part to stop the spread of this virus,” Volcanic shared in a press release.

“Refunds have been issued to all shows set to occur during the closure.”

ttending a concert at the Les Schwab Amphitheater already comes with a few more rules than in years past: Bags only of a certain size, and passing through a metal-detecting wand, to name a few. And this week, yet another requirement: showing proof of vaccination against COVID-19 or a negative COVID test. Central Oregon’s largest venue began checking for vaccination status this week, starting with the Modest Mouse show on Aug. 29. In addition, Gov. Kate Brown began requiring mask-wearing in public outdoor settings, including concerts, starting Aug. 27. So far, the new requirements are not slowing down concert-goers’ roles. For some, the new requirements were less of an impediment and more of an assurance of added safety.

Thomas contracted COVID while overseas in February 2020. Having COVID “totally kicked my ass,” Thomas said. “I honestly thought I was gonna die. One good thing came of it. I met my fiancé and she looked after me during this time, selflessly taking me to the hospital where they tried to admit me. I refused and rode it out in a hotel in Manila. And now I am having a baby girl in three weeks! Which has given me a renewed push in the business.”

Another recent challenge, Thomas said: watching Sisters-based Laird Superfoods begin to move in on the pili market share. With a buttery flavor and taste, all Pili Hunters products are grown wild. In the Tagalog Philippines language, pili means “chosen.”

“I always say the pili chose me [smiley face emoji].”

Thomas insists he couldn’t do any of this without all the people who supported him and the pili nut since his company’s inception. “They believed in me, which has kept the company alive and well.”

“We are always trying to make new products to keep our customers stoked,” Thomas said, adding, with a note of pessimism, “I can’t talk too much about our new stuff as it could get copied.”

Beloved bakery and maker of the well-known Ocean Roll, Sparrow Bakery, announced this week that it would close its original location on Scott Street in early September. The business will retain its retail location in Northwest Crossing, its owners announced Aug. 30. They cited personnel issues as a main driver of the closure.

“Hiring and retaining workers, henceforth referred to as ‘labor,’ has been a challenge for us at the bakery even before the pandemic era,” wrote owner Whitney Keatman, who co-owns Sparrow with wife Jessica Keatman. “Since Bend recovered from the recession labor has been in relatively short supply in this town—I know that most if not all of my service industry friends would agree. The pandemic has turned an annual labor struggle into a true crisis for our company.”

The stress and responsibility of keeping 130 workers safe during the pandemic, along with raising small children, supply chain issues and inflation were all factors contributing to the decision, Keatman said. In addition, retaining staff has been difficult.

“We have searched for new workers relentlessly this year: in years past I have interviewed and hired between 30-40 employees annually,” Keatman said. “This past year alone I have made 117 job offers, and of those who accepted the average retention has been less than 120 days.” The Scott Street location requires 20 staffers to operate with full staffing; after Labor Day weekend, it would only have six, the owners said.

Those remaining full-time employees will be offered jobs elsewhere in the company. The last day of operations at the Scott Street location in the Old Ironworks complex, will be Monday, Sept. 6.

Bye, Bye, Birdies Birdies Café, a neighborhood gathering spot on the west side of Bend near Central Oregon Community College, has closed its doors for good. After five years in business, the café’s ownership posted a message on its Facebook page August 26, announcing the closure.

“We will miss all our wonderful customers whom we have gotten to know over the years. We wish you well and hope that the next spot you choose to call home will be made better by your presence,” read the announcement.

“Birdies is closing, but the space that was the café will be something new and exciting. Kelsey and Kent Daniels will be remodeling and opening Flights Wine Bar sometime this fall. We hope that their business continues the Birdies tradition and becomes a new neighborhood gathering spot.”

This is true for how the original pili nut company came to fruition, too.

Jason Thomas, owner and founder of Pili Hunters, the first sprouted pili nut company in the U.S., divulged, “I literally snuck $100 worth of pili nuts back through customs in my backpack and started a company. At the time, the product was unknown in the West.”

This was back in 2014.

Customs missteps aside, Thomas shares, “Our biggest accomplishment has been building the Pili Hunters brand from the ground up without any backers. Just hard work. Literally on my own going to stores and expos, grinding.”

But hard work was nothing new to Thomas, a former Alaskan mountain guide, commercial fisherman, archaeologist’s assistant, a glaciology field hand, kitesurfing instructor, rock climbing bum and construction worker.

“I knew very little about commerce,” notes Thomas. “I learned early how to work hard and my travels around the

"Reminiscence" only reminds us of better movies

by Newton) that lets people go back and relive specific memories or access moments in their mind that they can’t remember anymore.

Enter Ferguson’s femme fatale, Mae, who comes in looking for her…missing keys? This leads Bannister down a rabbit hole of drug addicts, organized crime and the powerful politicians of Miami that will cause him to lose everything while also finding himself.

Or some corny line like that. The story itself is where the problems of the movie really come to the forefront.

I would watch another dozen movies set in the world of “Reminiscence.”

The sunken city of Miami is incredibly well developed and awesome to look at.

That, combined with the idea of helping people gain access to their memories is a great concept because it allows us to see how everyone in this world is basically trapped thinking back to a time when things were better. Looking forward to the future is depressing and hopeless, so people are mostly caught in a loop of trying to remember when things were less terrifying.

But the mystery of Mae (who goes missing 10 minutes into the movie, causing Bannister to become a detective), is a poorly developed one. When all the questions are answered, we see that it’s a very simple and predictable

mystery that was only beguiling because of the structure in which it was told.

There’s nothing here to think about, only to look at.

The sunken world of “Reminiscence” deserved a good story to be told in it. The potential was there for the film to be a classic along the lines of “Inception,” but you need more than good world-building when telling a science fiction tale. So much of “Reminiscence” is built on the spine of a romance we never once care about, leaving everything to feel

weightless and, ultimately, pointless.

If the machine Jackman used to send people into their memories existed, I would go back to before I saw the film, so I could remember it as a very cool idea with exciting prospects, instead of the sadly incomplete mess that was to come.

s there a word for when every element of a movie on its own seems like it should work but, when taken as a whole, the elements make for an experience that is hugely underwhelming and crappy? “Craptacular” is too dismissive and “Ridumbculous” doesn’t really get the point across, so I’m going to go with “Deprexcellent,” something so close to greatness that it’s just sad when it doesn’t get there… at all. Even a little.

That’s how I would describe “Reminiscence,” a movie that should be good, yet left me feeling emptier than Chipotle. With a cast featuring the always excellent Hugh Jackman, the ethereal and intense Rebecca Ferguson and the subtle Thandiwe Newton, that should have almost been enough to carry the film right there. Adding to that, it’s the directorial debut of Lisa Joy, the co-creator of “Westworld” and one of the writers of the all-time classic show, “Pushing Daisies.” Then to top it all off, it’s a futuristic Neo-noir piece that looks like a blend of “Waterworld,” “The Maltese Falcon” and “Inception.”

That’s my sweet spot right there.

But somehow, the nomination of all of these cool aspects doesn’t do anything to make it a memorable film, which is an absolute shame, because “Reminiscence” is gorgeously shot and the actual world-building is astounding. The film is set in the near future when climate change has made the seas rise and Miami is now this mostly flooded city where people live on

ou can’t toss a rock in Central Oregon without landing on a business severely impacted by COVID over the past 18 months. One who knows this story quite well is Chad Sperry, CEO of Breakaway Promotions, a family-run business based in Redmond.

In a typical year, Sperry organizes loads of running and cycling events, including the Bridge of the Gods Half Marathon, the Ochoco Gravel Grinder and the Oregon Trail Gravel Grinder.

Plus, he supports a host of other sporting events such as the Cascades Lake Relay and the Deschutes Dash. But last year most events were canceled, and the rebound hasn’t been much easier.

“Our first event back was a running race, the Willamette Valley Marathon,” Sperry said. “First, we had to reroute due to needing to avoid a homeless camp. And then we had to reroute around nesting bald eagles. And that was all after needing to reduce the numbers of participants because of COVID restrictions.”

Sperry continued, “With the Ochoco Gravel Grinder, we had fires popping up around the region, road closures, extreme heat and our shower truck was rerouted to support firefighters. The limit was when a herd of cows, including two bulls, decided to make aid station two their hangout area. I just kept thinking, ‘what’s next?’”

Sperry’s business is a family affair and wouldn’t be possible without his wife and partner Lori Waters and his two sons Luke and Kaleb. Chad and Lori founded the business in 2002.

We also love working with kids— they get a glimpse of how an event actually works, of all the details that go into making it a great experience, from the aid stations to accurate timing to clear signage. Even helping out with picking up the trash after. We also love that the kids get to work together, building a stronger connection with each other, creating a stronger team.”

Sperry is optimistic about next year.

“I know COVID has really increased the number of people doing sports outside, so I hope people will continue participating in the events. I am really looking forward to next year’s lineup of events. It’s fun to see people participate, to challenge themselves. Especially events like the Ochoco Gravel Grinder where people can camp and participate in a two-day event. I know we will have our challenges next year, too—all big events are based on your ability to pivot. I just hope we have a quieter year—maybe one where the biggest issue is chasing a few cows off the route.”

Patches O’Houlihan’s advice of “If you can dodge a wrench, you can dodge a ball,” doesn’t necessarily jive at the Bend dodgeball tournament, but his five Ds of dodgeball does! “Dodge, duck, dip, dive… and dodge,” expresses all you need to know in order to wreck it at the Drop-In Dodgeball event hosted at The Pavilion in Bend every Wednesday at 6:30pm.

Drop-In Dodgeball made its debut in June, founded by Nick Doulos. Doulos’ inspiration to start the event was to bring the Bend community closer together. “It’s an opportunity to meet a lot of people,” he said.

When it comes to Drop-in Dodgeball there are several ways to get involved. Participants can show up alone, or with a squad and take on opponents in a recess-style drop-in game—or try to take a trophy home in one of the competitive tournaments.

Whether it be for fun or for glory, players will be able to learn the rules and be able to meet other like-minded community members.

“We’re committed to making sure every player has fun, sweats a little, makes some new friends, and can’t wait to come back and play again,” the event’s website says.

Doulos plans to expand the league and tournaments into a more frequent program in the future. But, for now, the event is being hosted until Sept. 29.

The tale of rehabbing a wild cat, and catching hares to do so

By Jim Anderson 41 bobcat prey: jackrabbits (actually that’s a misnomer. Jackrabbits are NOT rabbits, they are hares, which leaves them in the rabbit group, but not a rabbit, as such.) Ed Park, another great old pal, agreed to help me grab some jacks.

It took almost a year for that animal to learn how to kill the rabbits and hares we gave it with just its bare paws by batting them into unconsciousness, but I eventually released it healthy and hardy and able to feed itself near Cougar Mountain in Lake County.

How did we capture the bobcat’s food, you ask? I tied a chair to the front end of my old flatbed Jeep. Park didn’t like this arrangement for catching jackrabbits, but I impressed on him that the Jeep was mine, and he was the helper. He sat in the chair with a quick release seat belt and a salmon net attached to a long pole.

A jackrabbit, when pursued, goes through a series of escape feints that work most of the time. Eagles, coyotes and such will get as close as they can and just about the time they have the jackrabbit in their clutches, it stops in its tracks, makes a very quick right or left turn, or heads off in the opposite direction.

I’d follow the jackrabbit and wait until it got those escape sequences out of its system and then quickly close in on it. Park would reach out with the net, snatch it off the ground, twist the net like he was trapping a butterfly and I’d come to a screeching halt. I’d jump out, grab the jack by the hind legs and drop it into a cage. When the cage was full then we’d head home and call it a night.

One night I was having a difficult time getting close enough to the jacks for Park to net ‘em, so I released Park’s seat belt and said, “I wanna’ try something.”

He gave me a dirty look and said, “You damn well better be careful what you do to me!”

On the next jack I got as close as I could, waiting for Park to raise the net, then jammed on the brakes. He flew off the seat right on top of the jackrabbit and had it rolled up in a ball when I got to him.

When I got out he separated from the netted jackrabbit and had put it in

the holding cage, I was headed for the driver’s seat when he stopped me with a firm grip on my arm and said, “I got new rules, Jim… This time YOU do the netting and I’ll do the driving.” The look on his face convinced me it was going to be that way, and sure enough, as I was reaching out to net the next jack, he hit the brakes and I was launched into thin air at the top of Powell Buttes.

As Park was getting me untangled he said, “You OK, nothing busted?” I said I was OK, and he laughed in delight: “Oh, I love this! You keep netting and I’ll keep driving.”

ay back in the mid-‘50s I was living in the old George A. Jones house in Bend located on Dean and Lily Hollinshead’s place. My great pal and superb helper in punishing raptor killers, Oregon State Police Officer Avon Mayfield, called me and asked if I would go with him to collect a bobcat held illegally in a sporting goods store in Bend.

He never said no to me when I called him about someone killing a hawk, owl or eagle, only, “Wait ‘till I get my uniform on.” So I was more than willing to accompany him, and we went to Franklin Avenue in Bend to pick up the bobcat.

The poor skinny creature was an awful sight, shivering in a cage not much bigger than one to hold a house cat. I immediately noticed someone had removed its claws, and it was not in a healthy state.

Officer Mayfield was always polite, even with the worst wildlife violators, and this time was no different. He patiently informed the store owner why he was there, why the owner was in violation of state law prohibiting the holding of said bobcat, cited the owner and told him we were leaving with the poor animal.

We took the scared creature to my home where Dean Hollinshead helped me build a wood and wire holding cage that was 12 feet long, 4 feet wide and 6 feet high. I placed the bobcat in the pen that was landscaped with some big rocks, grasses and bitterbrush.

ow much cannabis do you use?

Some take mad pride in how much they consume, from “one-hitand-quit-it” lightweights, to “Even-WuTang-said ‘enough’” World Heavyweight canna-champions. The amount consumed for some is irrelevant, for others a source of pride, or a topic poised to start arguments within partnerships (“Do you really need to smoke another joint?” If your Mom is coming over again, yes, at least one.”).

Add the amount smoked, vaped or scarfed, the product(s) being used, and endless flower strains, concentrates in myriad forms, or a literal dizzying array of edibles.

By the end of a session, you may not recall how much was consumed, or of which products, much less a clear assessment if the effects were the same as intended. Legalized medical and adultuse programs have developed more educated cannabis patients and consumers, familiar with THC and CBD content, strains and the value of terpenes to the overall experience.

While there remains a category of “Bro, I just wanna be high,” most cannabis users (Cannatarians?) have varying yet specific goals: cleaning the house, managing pain/anxiety/depression, sleep, or the aforementioned “just wanna be high.”

Sites such as Leafly and Weedmaps, driven by cannabis user reviews and well written in-house produced content, also offer users platforms to find a nearby dispensary to put that newly acquired knowledge to use. A useful concept, but limited for developing a “conscious cannabis consumption” user experience, with a clear set of intended outcomes.

It’s true: cannabis and a razor sharp recall aren’t always found together in the same room, or even zip code. Your newly discovered favorite strain easily becomes “It was green, with red hairs, or maybe purple, and it smelled like... weed” post session.

For those carefully jotting down info in your moleskine notebook during each session, Jah speed, but for the rest of us seeking a more digital and curated form of info gathering, check out a new app called Jointly.

Self-described as helping cannabis users “discover purposeful cannabis consumption,” the free app encourages you to, “enjoy your ideal cannabis experience every time, by tracking the 15 factors that can impact your results.”

(An operating-room degree of sterilized and clean smoking or vaping gear is the unlisted 16th factor. Use 99% rubbing alcohol and some Q Tips, Bobby Bongwater.)

that’s never been done, and start a confidential “user report.” Unlike TPS reports, these won’t drive you to burn the whole place down.

These reports start by asking you to consider and choose your preferred outcomes from cannabis, selecting up to three choices from a menu of 12, including “Replace Drinking,” “Manage Pain,” “Escape,” “Enhance Intimacy,” “Enjoy Social Situations,” “Focus and Create” and “Reduce Stress.”

The next menu asks you to select from nine consumption methods, including vaping, edibles, concentrates and so on, followed by a menu of 12 cannabinoids, both major and minor.

The reports allow the user a detailed record of how well the cannabis did, or did not, provide the desired effects.

Those aforementioned 15 factors include “How Much Did You Take,” “How Long Did You Wait Between Doses,” “How Hydrated” (or full) you are, “Consumption Of Companion Foods,” “Environment/Physical Surroundings,” and even “The People You Are With” (don’t get me started.)

Jointly did not come to play, but like all of us, they do need to get paid, preferably in full. That comes through the app insistently asking you to turn on your GPS, allowing it to provide a specific list of preferred strains, products and cannabinoids that are available at dispensaries in proximity to you.

Detailing a record of what you bought, how you consumed it, and how it felt is not everyone’s idea of a good time, but does provide a valuable record of use, and those 15 factors. The more reports completed unlocks increasingly personalized insights for the user, helping “optimize your cannabis wellness results,” and informing which products to recommend for your next report.

“From now on I’m going to be immoderate—and volatile,” she vows. “I shall enjoy loud music and lurid poetry. I shall be rampant.” Let me be clear, Capricorn: I’m not urging you to be immoderate, volatile, excessive, and rampant every day for the rest of your long life. But I think you will generate health benefi ts and good fortune if you experiment with that approach in the coming weeks. Can you think of relatively sane, sensible ways to give yourself this salubrious luxury?

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): While wading through the internet’s wilder terrain, I found a provocative quote alleged to have been uttered by the ancient Greek philosopher Socrates. He supposedly said, “My ultimate goal is to look totally hot, but not be unapproachable.” I confess that in the past I have sometimes been fooled by fake quotes, and I suspect this is one. Still, it’s amusing to entertain the possibility that such an august personage as Socrates, a major influencer of Western culture, might say something so cute and colloquial. Even if he didn’t actually say it, I like the idea of blending ancient wisdom with modern insights, seriousness with silliness, thoughtful analysis with good fun. In accordance with astrological omens, I recommend

you experiment with comparable hybrids in the coming weeks. (PS: One of your goals should be to look totally hot, but not be unapproachable.)

TAURUS (April 20-May 20): After studying your astrological omens, I’ve decided to offer you inspiration from the ancient Roman poet Catullus.

I hope the extravagant spirit of his words will free you to be greedy for the delights of love and affection. Catullus wrote, “Give me a thousand kisses, then a hundred; then another thousand, then a second hundred; then yet another thousand.” I’ll add the following to Catullus’s appeal: Seek an abundance of endearing words, sweet favors and gifts, caresses and massages, help with your work, and fabulous orgasms. If there’s no one in your life to provide you with such blessings, give them to yourself.

GEMINI (May 21-June 20): Gemini author Elif Batuman writes that the Old Uzbek language was rich in expressions about crying. There were “words for wanting to cry and not being able to, for loudly crying like thunder in the clouds, for crying in gasps, for weeping inwardly or secretly, for crying ceaselessly in a high voice, for crying in hiccups, and for crying while uttering the sound ‘hay hay.’” I recommend all of these to you in the coming days, as well as others you might dream up. Why? It’s prime time to seek the invigorating release and renewal that come from shedding tears generated by deep and mysterious feelings.

CANCER (June 21-July 22): A blogger named MythWoven imagines an “alternate universe where I literally go to school forever (for free) so I can learn about art and literature and history and languages for 100 years. No job skills. No credit requirements. No student loans. Just learning.” I have longings like hers. There’s an eternal student within me that wants to be endlessly surprised with exciting information about interesting subjects. I would love to be continually adding fresh skills and aptitudes to my repertoire. In the coming weeks, I will give free rein to that part of me. I recommend you do the same, my fellow Cancerian.

LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): In 2016, the International Garden Photograph of the Year depicted lush lupine flowers in New Zealand. The sea of tall purple, pink, and blue blooms was praised as “an elegant symphony” and “a joy to behold.” What the judges didn’t mention is that lupine is an invasive species in New Zealand. It forces native plant species out of their habitat, which in turn drives away native animal species, including birds like the wrybill, black stilt, and banded dotterel. Is there a metaphorically comparable phenomenon in your life, Leo? Problematic beauty? Some influence that’s both attractive and prickly? A wonderful thing that can also be troublesome? The coming weeks will be a favorable time to try to heal the predicament.

SCIENCE ADVICE GODDESS I recently met this guy, and we’ve spent the entire past week together.

Unfortunately, he’s moving across the country—tomorrow. He asked whether I’d be open to dating after he moved. I panicked and said no—I’m really not looking for long-distance— but now that he’s leaving, I’m sad, and I’m worried I’ve made a mistake. Help!

—Confused Obstacles to love are like situational steroids. We long for what’s out of reach— and all the more romantic if reaching it takes crossing the desert on a camel or $553 with a layover in Boise.

The perception that something is in short supply or soon will be (say, because it’s about to move across the country) makes it seem more valuable to us. Psychologist Robert Cialdini calls this the “scarcity principle” and explains that the possibility we could lose access to something (or someone) jacks us into a motivational state: Go! Chase it! Don’t let it get away!

The scarcity principle is the psychological scheming behind ads like: “Today only!” and “Only one sofa at this price!”

The looming scarcity (or “scarcity”) shuts down your Department of Reasoning, basically turning you into a dog chasing a couch-shaped squirrel. Only after you buy the thing and get it home (P.S. “no returns!”) do you notice an important fact: It will fit perfectly in your living room... if you take a sledgehammer to part of a wall and—“surprise!”—extend one end into your neighbor’s apartment.

Recognizing how scarcity primes us to see through loss-prevention-colored glasses, do your best to set aside “Eek! He’s leaving!” and objectively assess what you two have. In short, is he (and how you are together) so extraordinary—so near-impossible to find locally—that the thousands of dollars in travel costs and other trade-offs of long-distance might be worth it? If so, just tell him you’d like to try long-distance and see how it goes.

Should you decide your feelings were more about the circumstances than the guy, well, you’re not alone.

Impossible love brings out the drama queeny 14-year-old in many of us.

Imagine if Romeo and Juliet’s parents, instead of forbidding their love, were all, “Hey, you crazy kids… have fun at the movies!” The play would’ve become a hate story for the ages—after things between them inevitably got kinda meh and Juliet walked in on Romeo in bed with her BFF and her lady-in-waiting.

I really appreciate my boyfriend, except for one thing: his constantly posting photos and videos that include me on his Facebook or Instagram. I’m a pretty private person, and I told him I don’t like having my life and our life together posted online.

He grudgingly agreed to stop posting things about me, but he thinks I’m being unreasonable and “paranoid.”

—Discreet “Online privacy” is a quaint fiction. The reality: Any info about you, from your sexts to your Social Security number, is probably stealable by any basement nosepicker with an IQ over 125.

That said, it’s understandable you’d try to retain whatever shreds of yours you can—like by engaging in the “impression management” sociologist Erving Goffman observed we all do face to face: tailoring the “self” we present and revealing more or fewer “regions” of ourselves, depending on the particular audience.

There’s probably no person these days who can’t be “canceled”—out of a job, any ability to keep earning a living, and/or their social world—by some photo, video, or quote from them that’s cast in a bad light by an internet mob.

Take the San Diego Gas & Electric worker photographed driving with his hand hanging out of his truck window in what was claimed on social media to be a “white supremacy” hand signal. (The OK sign is said to make the initials W.P. for “White Power.”) The man—who is Mexican American!—insisted he was doing nothing of the sort, but the utility fired him anyway. “To lose your dream job for playing with your fingers, that’s a hard pill to swallow,” he told NBC 7 San Diego.

Your boyfriend might never agree with your approach to online privacy. However, he might understand it— and gain a deeper understanding into who you are—if you evoke his empathy. Instead of simply telling him you “don’t like” to appear in social media posts, go into detail about your fears and discomfort at allowing an unselect audience a window into your life.

It’s awful enough when we violate our own privacy—like by accidentally sexting Grandma and then rushing over in hopes of deleting it before she remembers where she left her phone.

There’s really no hope of privacy crime scene cleanup when your audience is “everyone on the planet but three Namibian guys whose goats keep chewing through their cable.” yA

Home Pricing Strategies

Setting realistic expectations when selling a home “why,” and the goals needing to be achieved. Sometimes it’s most important that the home sells quickly, or sometimes sellers are willing to wait for the right buyer at the right price. Most sellers are hoping for the highest sale price possible, but pricing a home unrealistically high can deter buyers and create a longer time on market than if the home was priced at market value.

Sales is a numbers game; getting a home in front of as many buyers as possible will get it sold. A home priced slightly under or at market value will draw the most attention, selling quicker. Unless a home is highly exceptional, pricing above market value will result in a longer wait and will most likely need a price drop before selling.

Over the past six months buyers have been trained to think homes are selling fast and at over list price, so right now they might overlook overpriced homes and those that have been on the market a long time. Keep in mind that buyers are shopping online first using set criteria, so consider pricing a home at $499,900 instead of the low $500s, for example, to get in front of more buyers.

The market is still strong and the total number of sales have remained consistent, but the uptick in inventory is forcing sellers to become more realistic with their pricing. It’s still a great time to sell and anyone who has owned a home for a few years has generated considerable equity—however, homes aren’t flying off of the shelves right now and pricing strategy is becoming very important again.

he housing market has been on fire. With the exception of the “COVID speed bump” which slowed sales during the initial quarantine in late March of 2020, momentum picked up the pace again in May of 2020 and is just now showing signs of slowing. At the beginning of 2021, the housing inventory was incredibly low and homebuyer demand was extremely high. This opportunity let sellers price homes outrageously high and multiple buyers were competing, hoping to not lose out again. It was common to have showings lined up over a weekend resulting in sellers having to wade through multiple offers, usually looking for the highest sales price.

However, inventory has increased, in turn offering buyers more options and ability to be selective without too much competition. A clear indicator is reflected with homes accumulating more days on market and numerous price reductions.

Determining current market value is the first step in developing a pricing strategy. While there are many different online price guides and estimators that provide a good ballpark number, they are not usually very accurate. Consult with a realtor who has a strong knowledge of the market, neighborhoods and buyer trends. Most agents will utilize an average of all of the recent home sales currently listed and pending homes, while also taking into account many different factors.
