For a lot of people, happy hour couldn’t come around soon enough. But whether that happy hour starts at noon, when the work day is done or any other time, life is too precious to spend it drinking less-than-stellar drinks.

For the summer 2018 edition of the Source Weekly’s Happy Hour Guide, we asked local bartenders to weigh in on the drinks people tend to order time and time again—and what those people should be drinking at each bartender’s respective bar instead. THE LAST STRAW Local restaurants and bars opt to stop using plastic straws

Drinkers, it’s time to stop sucking.

People use more than 500 million plastic straws in the U.S. every day—enough to fill 127 school buses, according to Strawfree.org According to the Ellen MacArthur Foundation, if the overall use of plastic remains the same, by 2050, the oceans are expected to contain more plastics than fish (by weight), and the entire plastics industry will consume 20 percent of total oil production and 15 percent of the annual carbon budget.

This is a huge amount of waste that can be easily avoided. Across the globe people are taking initiatives to reduce the amount of plastic waste.

The Instagram handle The Lonely Whale launched an initiative to #stopsucking. With 116,000 followers, they have a goal of a straw-free ocean.

This July, Seattle will become the largest metropolitan city to ban the single-use plastic straw.

It’s not just happening in the United States. Scotland plans to be rid of plastic straws by 2019, and Taiwan is banning single-use plastic items, including straws, cups and shopping bags, by 2030.
